Alright, there's a lot of talk about how to improve battery, and which ROMS will do that. After trying different ROMS, Kernels, and mods, I have finally found what *I* think is brilliant.
For the ROM, flash vipers 1.3 located here.
Once the ROM is flashed, go to the terminal app, type "su" , followed by "vc". That will get you to vipers control script(s). Get familiar with it. Now go install launcherpro from the market, or adw.launcher, whatever launcher you prefer. Once that launcher is *set as default* go back to terminal. Once you type su and vc, press 3. Then continue to press 1-4, I kept the lockscreen . That will free up *tons* of RAM. Beforehand I had around ~200, now I am consistently at ~350.
With that and the oc daemon, you phone should run smooth and pretty good battery. Now were going to flash a differnet kernel. Some will disagree with me, saying that flashing a SBC kernel is dangerous. Yes, it was on the Evo 4g. But how it works on the 3D is different from the 4g. *For some odd reason, the SBC thread seems to have gone missing. I'm guessing it was moved to another section. So, here is the direct download link to the best copy at the moment, here. If you don't want to flash a SBC kernel, go ahead and stick with Stock, OC does not do to much with a monster phone like this.
With that combo, I have had my phone on for 4.5 Hours with reddit, web, texting, and 2 calls. The battery? 91%.
This can obviously be improved by the community. What do you guys think we should add?

Might be a good reason for me to root. Thanks
I just followed your guide, and now after I rebooted my phone thinks it is charging when its not.
EDIT: Nevermind flashed the new beta, back to test 5 all is good
adam: Myn say he's making a 3vo rom? I rocked warm2.2 on my OG forever...now my wife has it =-).
I've wanted to root just because im a mod junkie but hadnt seen much to really kick me in the boot to get going yet. I have pretty solid battery life and performance on stock, but I do miss my Ti BU and SetCPU (more less just to have fun on benchmarks).

give this a try
Has anyone tried Zeam Launcher on the EVO 3D? I keep trying it when I try other roms, but no matter what it is extremely laggy on the app screen.

So you you used reddit, texed, web and 2 calls in 10 minutes time and the rest standby? I can understand.
Ive noticed when I flashed the synergy rom it was very lag and the 3D was annoying and I could not turn it off.
As well the font of the apps looked very blurry like.

Synergy uses Ziggy's kernel. Lately, his kernels have been plagued with lag and other issues, in my opinion. Chingy's ROMs use the same kernel and had the same issues. I couldn't make the lag go away except for using the performance governor, which I don't consider a viable solution to any performance problem. Whatever he does to screw up the governors also makes them impossible to modify. I switched to Imoseyon's, then DreamKernel. Both performed better than Ziggy's as far as lag, and both registered better benchmarks; between 200 to 400 better on Quadrant using the same ROM and nearly identical clock speeds. Ditch Ziggy's and try Imoseyon's kernel. I think you'll see much quicker response.

FrankenROM... I mean Synergy, isn't for me either. If you're looking for an excellent Sense experience, BAMF is at the top of that game as far as features and performance goes. Th3ory ROMs aren't bad, and neither are Chingy's Gingeritis ROMs once you get that POS Ziggy kernel out of there.
BAMF Forever has been the best ROM I have used to this day. Smooth, very functional, and visually pleasing. Plus the Batman Easter egg is pretty sweet.
I have a question though if anybody cares to give a suggestion. I was thinking about trying a custom kernel with Forever, but I'm not sure which one to try: Lean or Dream. I'm also wondering if I would be better off leaving well enough alone. Anyone?

I've used both Imoseyon's and Dream with Forever. Both perform very nicely. I'm not sure I could even say one is better than another with any certainty. I haven't tried Lean with the smartassV2 yet. I haven't had any real issues that weren't related to radios. For some reason, depending on the radio, the screen doesn't come back on every now and then. Maybe it is the kernel, but I haven't seen anyone else talk about that issue.
Yes! I thought it was just me - I liked everything about Synergy except how it ran. I experienced the lag too and it was just really glitchy for me. But I loved how it looked - maybe I should give it another try with a different kernel.....

No but you can google it
All right, so I just my Thunderbolt a couple days ago, rooted it, first time truly rooting a phone, used Revolutionary. Now for my noob questions.
Will saving apps to my SD card keep them on the phone after installing a new ROM?
I tried installing a BAMF ROM with Sense 3.0, it was laggy and I couldn't access the market, said I needed background data. ROM said it required a MR2 or above radio, I don't know if I have that or not, I'm guessing not since I couldn't access the market. Is there a way to check which radio I'm using?
I'm using the free version of juiceDefender, are there any noticable perks to upgrading to a paid version?
One last question, is there a good calendar app that will have a useful agenda widget (similar to BlackBerry's today feature)?
I'd like to learn what I can as fast as I can and stop being a noob ha ha. I ask about the paid apps 'cause I'd want to buy setCPU and really ramp up my speed. I'm using a free app right now and getting 1.2GHz, but I want 1.4GHz speed.
Okay, I lied, this is the final question, can someone link me to a good easy to understand noob rooting thread that can really help me understand more perks and good to do things with rooted phones?
Thanks in advance, any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Background data error should only be happening because you don't have wifi or 4g/3g on,so turn on either. Then go to market it would ask you to enable background data if it off
As for checking the radio not sure.
But on the benefits of root, in my experience is unlimited I have also just go a tbolt couple weeks ago and I have been switching roms and kernels left and right to find the right one to fit my needs. And it's really better because you can customize your phone to something you like.
My tip is to read the sticky threads in the general section and q&a.

Radio
Settings>About Phone>Software Information>More>Baseband Version
Compare to the radios here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048128&highlight=radio
If its not a radio in the Gingerbread section, download BOTH radios, rename one to PG05IMG.ZIP and place on the root of the sd card, boot into hboot and let it update. After its updated and booted, delete that file from the root, rename the other and place on the root. Boot into hboot and update that radio. Doesn't matter the order. You can find a zip with both radios in one, i'm just lazy and did a quick search to find you that one.
As far as overclocking, look into custom kernals that support higher overclocking and the speedtweak.sh script is nice. I use IMO's kernals, then go into any terminal emulator on the phone (download from market), type su, hit enter, then speedtweak.sh, hit enter. Gives you some options. Also nandroid your phone before messing with overclocking speeds incase you set to a speed you're phone can't use. You can screw your phone up overclocking, be careful.
Custom kernels can be found in a sticky on the development page. If you started with the latest GB update, then you have the latest radios. For apps, use titanium backup from the market. It saves all apps and their data for you.

Good luck. Post back results or if you have any problems. And always always always back up current ROM and do a full wipe when flashing anything new (mod,ROM, kernel, radio) to your phone.

Don't not do a full wipe when flashing a kernel you are going to confuse him, if anything needs to be wiped just dalvik cache.
No wipe needed to flash a radio just do it.
Depending on the mod and what it changes just dalvik and clearing normal cache never hurts.

Okay, so I did notice one thing, I installed the Eternity Nightly theme, which I love, but I had to restore back to stock because when I used Titanium Backup to restore apps+data, it reset all my settings back to stock anyway and I really want to use the theme that comes stock with Eternity Nightly. Did I do something wrong?
when you do the restore on Ti, select only the apps you need, not all. Sounds like you restored some system files too that reset your theme.
I was attemting to try again, but there was an issue backing up the boot image. Is there a way to fix that?
Where are you backing up? I'm assuming through CWM? If it failed to back up, boot your phone up, download rom manager if you don't have it, and have it flash CWM recovery again. Then try to back it up again.
Yes, CWM, I have ROM Manager, I tried flashing recovery and attempting again twice, same issue, can't backup the boot image.
Figured it out, there wasn't enough space on my SD card for the backup, I found out when I tried to record a voice note and it said I didn't have enough space to record. I was using an 8GB card, but I think I'll have to switch to the 32GB. I was using sav ming the 32GB for a new mp3 player but a rooted phone could use it better I think.
So, I know what a sense ROM is, but what are the differences between and sense ROM and an ASOP ROM?
And what are the advantages of flashing different kernels?

AOSP = Android open source project. So Sense ROMs are based soley on HTC phones. AOSP is a more general Android OS. If you're running a Sense based ROM, you use a kernel for that specific style. Generally, using a kernel for one ROM on the other style ROM will most likely cause problems...

Hey id thought I just throw a couple questions in here since a new thread isnt necessarily needed.
I Just Picked up this phone, root is done, just wondering if anyone can tell me the best radio/kernel setup that works great with MIUI & 4G is stable?
HTC thunderbolt
I thought I would stick with sense roms for a while, but I've had it a month, and I'm already using launchers to change the look and feel.
Anyways, I wanna try an aosp rom like cm7 or thunderbread.
Right now I'm running gingeritis 3d (sense), and I used the kernel that was recommended.
My question is, and I know this is a lot about preference but, what is the best aosp rom out there right now that's stable and fast? And what kernel should I use? battery life isn't a huge deal for me since I'm near a plug most of the day, but I'd like at least 6-7 hrs from it.
if anyone has any info and suggestions, I'd appreciate it

There is no best. there is all personal preference. The asop/asop type roms I can think of off the top of my head is OMFGB, MIUI, and CM7. All being at a stable point in development. So look at them and figure out which one you would like best
I'll just make this simple.
I'm looking for a
Kernel that works with cm 7.
It needs to be fast stable, and everything working.
What have you used?
Which ones did you have a good experience with?
I'm wanting to flash today and could use a prod in the right direction for my first aosp experience.
Thanks
(and if you have links, that'd be awesome)

I'm on taptalk right now so searching is a real pain. Look up imoseyn kernels. He has sense and asop roms. Go to the development section. Plenty of info there for you. Whatever you do do not rush into flashing something just because you want to. Read, research, read some more, then make sure you understand what your doing before you do, so if you have an issue you can possibly save yourself lots of headache.

I've done a ton of reading, researching and everything. I'm not a tech noob at all. I actually own a pc repair business. and I've successfully flashed phones before.
Like I said, I did the first flash a day or so after getting it (to Gingeritis 3D) and everything went fine. (after getting the correct radio that is)
Anyways, I choose CM7 and downloaded Zoom kernel, which is Here
The CM7 file i downloaded is: update-cm-7.1.1-Thunderbolt-signed.zip
Which I thought was the correct one.
I also downloaded a MR2.5 radio. Although I'm not 100% its the BEST one, but I know it works with CM7. and I did get a signal with it.
but even after wiping everything, and doing it over and over, I can't get past the white htc splash screen.
Do you have any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Solution Found!!
I had been doing everything right, but it seems Clockwork Mod Recovery was corrupt or something.
What I did:
I restored back to my last backup.
Opened Rom Manager
Click "Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery" (the top one, even if it says your up to date)
after it flashes CWM successfully, either download and flash a rom from Rom Manager, or do it manually as I did.
And after the flash, I rebooted, and it went right to the CM7 boot animation, and loaded perfectly.
If you were like me and searched google, and found lots of posts with the same issue, but no solutions. So I hope this helps others.
Thanks for all the help guys!
(goes to show sometimes you just gotta try anything and everything)

i've used many sense & aosp roms myself and will say that aside from sticking with an actual cyanogen rom directly, the latest "SHIFTAO5P" that's been re-worked by dhacker, 2.8 is really nice & stable(and the location/gps actually works).
I agree with you on the sense though, I could never stand the actual sense launcher and always just used Launcher Pro.
Also if you use aosp you will run into issues with the flash player. I know when I was on CM7 it happened. I tried out MUIU and I had problems with flash and I had to do that flash player trick (look it up) to get it to work. I never tried OMFGB but I have tried CM7 and MIUI and they're both sweet. My favorite one is Liquid Smooth. but its up to you. They're all great

Im a noob to this, but I was having some trouble with Smokin1337's Sick Sense vX.1 rom on my EVO 3D. My trouble was the battery was draining 1% a minute (while using the device) and camera stopped working all of the sudden. I click into either camera or camcorder app or use the camera button shortcut and it just gives a blank (black) screen.
Unfortunately as a noob I cannot post in the Sick Sense thread so I have to refer to Q & A for help. Originally the superuser app I had installed, after installing Sick Sense, did not work properly. It kept force closing so I updated it via the market suggested by another user...forgot his name...too lazy to check...but it was my first post. Now my force closes of superuser have stopped but I still have some more problems.
For one, my phone reboots randomly while using this rom. As mentioned above, the camera does not function anymore. It used to work and now all of the sudden it stopped working and just gives me blank screen. Also, the battery drains quickly while in use literally 1% a minute and I'm not even using 4G. I just browse the web, I don't run any crazy programs that tax the battery or processor.
Originally I was just looking for a Sense Rom that is better than the Stock Sprint Rom. I just wanted a faster rom with no bloat and an excellent battery life seeing as on the commute to my university I take the subway and my phone switches between roaming and no signal. Also, the buildings at my university seem to be cell phone signal resistant. Sprint signal is scarce and data is slow and usually I'm roaming. The same happened with T-Mobile except there was no signal at all. Verizon and AT&T seem to be the kings of signal at my university because they work the best. Anyways, before I continue to ramble on is there any other ROM you guys at XDA would know that would best suit my needs. I've restored from my backup and phone is running good on Stock Sprint Rom for now.
Thanks For Your Time!
P.S. I've looked into some ROMS but seeing that I'm a noob I'm skeptical of nightly releases fearing that my phone would constantly restart or I would brick it. I'm somewhat interested in WTSB Hydro v2.4 but I'll take a Fast Sense ROM, but I don't really want to overclock because I'm not a power user. Currently, my Evo 3D has Hboot 1.5 because it was replacement unit from Asurion for a lost phone so its updated to the latest and greatest (lol we all know that sometimes isn't the best thing...)
Sounds like clean rom is for you.
I agree...clean rom is the absolute best sense rom out their. Sick bat life, and fast as heck. I would also say miui if you like aosp...it has better bat life and is faster without sense, unless you like sense lol...but scott is a wonderful coder.
Thanks for suggesting the clean ROMs. Anybody know if I can turn off camera sound in the rom??? Seeing as I'm a noob with less than 10 posts I can't post in the ROM forum so I have to seek out help in Q & A.
Go with one by virus fast and no problems then once you get hooked you can go to nightlys

Trying to figure out how to install a certain ROM. Don't remember the devs name...something along the lines of theAndroidosX anyways its the Olympus Trinity XE ROM with beats for the EVO 3D.
Since I got HBOOT 1.5 it says follow a certain method to root your phone/flash kernel or ROM. I can't do that method seeing as I already have Revolutionary. Seeing as I have revolutionary do I just follow flashing instructions of the ROM or do I have to use an alternative method because of HBOOT 1.5?
Any help would be appreciated!!!
Steel rom is by far the best and most stable sense rom out there.

Thanks for suggestions guys. I went ahead with Olympus though. Seems to be running insanely smooth. I'll try it out and if not I'll try what you guys reccommend...
