So...
I have been noticing that when I drag my finger side to side very slowly, the screen initially does not move and then catches up. So it looks like it's lagging a bit. Once it catches up though it's fine..
Maybe I am being a paranoid.. but the screen does not move side to side smoothly.
I am not sure if it's been doing that before I've done anything to it (root, mod, etc).
Is this normal? Any thoughts?
Try getting it to mess up after a fresh reboot and making sure as many programs as possible are *not* running.
If your phone is the I777 and you already have a kernel that allow you to overclock (entropy's) try turning the processor down low and see if it's worse and compare it to the speed turned up high.
If it's the same and definitely lagging there may be some system tweaks needed.
If it's not the I777, well I'm genuinely sorry.

My phone is the I777 and it is running entropy's kernel
I went back to the state where it had been only rooted and tried and I've experienced the same thing...
I am not sure what the problem might be...
So I guess there is a problem? and this is not supposed to lag like this?
Also, this is only when I drag it very slowly. It is barely noticeable when I do it as I would normally.
Thanks for your reply
Not sure what could be causing that. I just tried using tw launcher and couldn't seem to get mine to mess up.
Are you talking sliding left and right on your home screen or app drawer?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
I may see what you're talking about. I think it's ok.
The phone has to figure out if you're pressing to select something on the screen or going to slide back and forth, thus the slight stutter from your finger going slow.
Since it's not noticeable at normal scrolling speeds you should be fine, otherwise you should be able to see it more so there.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
Cool. I will try not to be so paranoid about this haha.
Thanks for your input!
Additional Question.
I may be wrong, but this may have been after I modified twlauncher with a mod.
Could this be the cause? If so, can it be fixed?
Depends. What did you do to mod it?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
Here's the link to the mod
[MOD][11/5]Modified AT&T TouchWiz 4|5 icon dock|5 columns in app drawer
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1333684
Well you asked for the right thing on that thread to revert. Each of the files that mod replaced will have to be put back.
You can wait and hope someone comes up with a cwm package to revert. Or use a program like root explorer to replace the files one by one from a stock rom.
I usually just go for flashing my entire phone when I'm looking at what you're doing. It's easy and it's quick.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
oh. so that WAS the problem.
Every time I look into the phone and I notice this first. It's very annoying me
Well I have an access to stock TwLauncher.
Can I just replace the whole TwLauncher? Just copy and paste TwLauncher.apk file into the phone? I think that will be the simplest way rather than looking for what it replaced. Or I might just request a flashable twlauncher and someone might be generous enough to upload it for me..
You could always try reflashing the mod. It may correct the issue. If more people were reporting the problem it wouldn't be as likely.
Sometimes flashes don't 'stick', and nobody is really sure why.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
I have reflashed the mod several times just to make sure.
It did not seem to help.
I just requested a stock TwLauncher.apk
Hopefully someone will be generous enough to help me out..
Thanks gr8hairy1 for replies and helps!
Please update if you get it fixed. I'll be busy the next couple days. When I get a chance I'll pull everything you need.
Though just flashing back to stock will save you a bit of time. But it's always good to learn new things.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
so I flashed the stock twlauncher, but still not fixed.
I am thinking of going back to stock and see if that fixes it
back to bonestock.
Still experiencing the same problem. At this point, I am not sure what the problem is..
It seems like this is only for TwLauncher. GoLauncher seems to work better.

Is there any reason for me to install this? I've read numerous times that CM7 alone is good enough but I've become addicted to messing with my phone and if this improves something I would like to try it. Guess I'm just asking for opinions.

I ran it for a few days and then flashed back to stock build prop. I felt I did not need it Imho.
Thanks for the quick response! I have no reason to mess with things other than to mess with them. I will leave as is.

Lol I know I was used to flashing and changing things on the roms to try to improve them but CM7 was one that I found ran best when you just leave it alone. I did see the supersu app fixed the super user issues for me when I was still using CM7.
What is the super user error that occurs?
All my apps and market work only mod I have is the mash up.
As far as I know mashup is suppose to improve Signal and lowers battery consumption
Sent from my MB870 using Tapatalk
There is times when you go to use a rooted app it will freeze. You have to foreclose the app and then re open it. With the supersu app that stopped happening.
I'm running the mash up on cm7. And I like it. Videos definitely load faster and battery life improved somewhat! Haven't noticed as many 3g drops either.
I went back to gb. That leak was real bad. Lots of freezing and little issues. Don't say its my device, because i have 2 and both had a lot of the same little issues. The only thing i miss is mms pics being zoomable.

I can 3rd this. Its running with zero problems on my device, both A1 and A2 of DaGr8's ROM. It could have been the method you used to flash the ROM, or some of the programs you possibly backed up, but for me i have had zero reboots, only one FC on Touchwiz which i don't use anymore, and no other glitches.
i switched back to GB too, ICS was almost perfect, only Navigon and tether not working (unless paying $50 to ATT).
I miss ICS, fell much smoother than GB, will switch back when we have more steady ROM.
I'm using Alpha II on both mine and my wife's - no issues. As for the keyboard, I'm using the latest Swiftkey 3 Tablet beta.
Out of the number of already active threads on the subject you needed your own?

I notice the occasional hitch for a few minutes after a restart of the phone but after that everything is fine, though i cant seem to get samsung apps working and lost compatibility with a few apps that don't work even when sideloaded. Gonna stick it out till the final build is ready though.

i used the self installing exe rom. The original leak, not a custom rom. I dont want a custom rom either.
I didnt install any backups. I have all the apk's and use appmonster to install them all.
in mms the send and attach buttons where switched and my wife *****ed cause she kept hitting the attach button when she was trying to send.
I dont want a custom rom. If the self installing exe leak rom might be the problem, what other way can it be flashed? Only other thing i did was flash recovery and install SU
If you're having problems most people would say install fresh and DO NOT use a program to restore apps, download them one by one thru the app store.

yeah no kidding. I just said i install all my apps from apk's. Appmoster only starts the apk install one after another. it doesnt install them for you and its not backups.... its apk's
Another thing was the appliction monitor was always turning red just from having something as simple as web browser openned. The memory management seemed to be horable.
Im trying to locate another way to install, maybe odin or something.
It's too bad your against trying any custom roms. For one they get rid of all that at&t stuff you possibly never use; By doing that extra memory is freed up in the process. I didn't have that many issues when I flashed the self installing leak, but I decided to go with DAGR8's Alpha 2, it's faster than the stock leak was. Every time I re-flash a phone, I re-install everything from market, I don't backup anything. It doesn't take that long to type in my user / password and have everything synced back from the market anyway.

I'm running the CM9 beta and while I really like the interface and smoothness of ICS, I get loads of random lockups and restarts. Is this typical? Is there any way around it? It seems as if some people are running this ROM without much trouble which makes me wonder why I'd be subject to a different experience.
any thoughts or suggestions? is there anything I can do increase stability?
thanks
If you're running a lot of media on it, say: pics, movies, web browsing with many pics or gifs to load they it can give it some trouble. Play around with it for a bit and see what it likes and what it doesn't. CM9 is really nice.

Fixed Permissions and that didn't seem to help anything. My phone could just be sitting on my desk and it will suddenly restart. only real widget I'm running is Beautiful Widgets weather/clock combo. Had been running Go Launcher, but disabled it to no effect. I'm somewhat at a loss as to what I can even try at this point.
I seemed to have more problems with it when I tried to supercharge. But when I was first trying to do it, it wasnt 100% supercharged. I figured out the right way of getting it fully supercharged and it ran smoother than ever. Still some lockups and reboots now and then but thats expected. Our ICS ROMs aren't perfect. I also found that flashing the ROM without wiping data sometimes made things worse. Now that I figured out how to do things right, every ICS ROM we have runs smooth. Other than the random reboots every now and then. Those wont go away.

Just wanted to update this for others having some stability issues.
I wanted to flash the bluesleep fix. So I copied it to my phone, made a nandroid, and flashed it. While in the BSR I decided to flash the mashups.
reboot, major problems as you'd guess. read up on it, reflash CM9, things are ok, but I revert back to my nandroid just to be safe. then I flash the bluesleep fix.
now...super stable. a couple of random reboots but no where near as many. what fixed it, the bluesleep fix? just mucking with it? no idea. moral of the story may be to apply the blue sleep fix, or take a nandroid and then restore it. I have no idea, but now I'm really loving my CM9.
Paranoid android has the blue sleep fix and mash up as part of the rom

Just got the s4 yesterday. I'm experiencing some lag issues with the gallery and mostly the text message app and sometimes other areas of the phone. When I click the text app it opens then if I click to open up one of the convos that's when I notice a big delay. It's like a 1 second delay. This is basically instant on my note 2. Is this a software problem that will hopefully be fixed soon or a hardware problem? Anyone else notice this? That text delay when you open up a convo.. Also SwiftKey seems to lag sometimes.

Try Handcent SMS or Handcent Pro Beta for texting. Much faster. If you use any 3rd party texting program remember to go to your installed applications and click on All and then disable Messaging which is the default messaging application. This way you don't get double notifications. Then drag the icon to your bottom bar and lock screen if applicable.
Ok I got chomp sms. It seems to be the fastest. Why do you think weather bug radar runs better on my note 2 than my s4? The s4 is so much more powerful it seems like everything should be faster and smoother.

no matter what, you can always rearrange your home screen again to make it look how you want...
follow the steps listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290798
that will root the phone. make sure you install a custom recovery like twrp or cwm, and make a backup. then, download titanium backup pro (it is like $6.99), and go in and freeze the apps you don't feel you need. make sure you do your research first as to what apps you are freezing, there are lists of bloatware posted all over the site. that will debloat your phone for the most part. after that, you can start to flash custom rom's with different tweaks built in. cleanrom is really nice, as is hyperdrive.

Perfect timing then. As everyone says, you've got to clean the bloat but it has to be loosened first so heat up a kettle of water and let the water vapor soak into the phone. Once that's done the real clean begins. Just as any bacteria or virus it's got to be nuked to kill it, so stick it in the microwave on high (not "hi") for 2 minutes. if you smell somethiny funky that means all is well and an extra minue or two wont hurt.
Lastly, the dead bloatware has to be extricated from the phone so use a small screwdriver to lift a corner of the glass and then shake out the dead bloatware.. Now its time to root so get a shovel and Miraclegrow ready.

The 1x transition from the camera bug is well known but I'm not sure if they pushed an update to fix that or not. I have heard that they did push an update to fix the security notification bug, so if you still have it I would try to do the 4.3 update again to fix it (you will lose root and have to do that again though). Touchwiz is by nature pretty laggy but what you're describing is not normal... I would do a factory reset and see if that helps. On mine I have bloat frozen, greenify, etc and it runs fairly smooth. Not buttery, but smoother than what you're saying.
Yeah i've done factory resets and used the verizon repair tool which unroots and puts all bloat back a few time to.. still the same lag.. I did all the exact same thing on my old s3 and my s4 is just way slower.. and I'm sorry I couldn't find anything on the 1x camera thing so thanks for helping.. I do still wonder if the 1x thing is on all carries and models or just on random ones?

Well, that's a consequense of another problem with this device, lack of enough memory for everything samsung decided to put in. This "new" problem is probably one of the most debated subjects around these foruns. If you read enough you'll eventually find the anwser but it boils down to:
- for the easy, safest but slightly better than original solution, replace your launcher for a lighter one that has some sort of lock in memory option. I use Nova launcher. Those not always work but may improve what you have.
- to better solve your problem you'll need to replace your rom. Or at least your kernel. There are plenty out there. For a samsung feel i'd recommend archidroid's samsung based. It's severily optimized to use the least possible without compromising anything you might want from samsung but most of all, if used correctly, is already set up to use zram that will compensate for that lack of memory (i'm using boeffla's kernel with nova launcher, not sure about the other options). This has solved my redrawing/multitasking problems for the most part. You might be able to get away with just the kernel change since that's where zram is set up but having a rom that autoloads less stuff is also helpful.
- the best experience i've had with the lack of memory issues was, by far, when i used an AOSP rom. Wasn't even using zram or swap mechanics, multitasking was simply awesome. There are disadvantages to aosp roms on the S3 but if that's even an issue to you, it's a whole different subject (to many people it's not).
Thank you for your advice! But i want to ask if the same thing happened to you? Not the redraws but with the shadow under icons reappearing.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Hum, cant say it did. But multitasking is a big thing to me so I didnt stay with stock for too long, so Im not sure what's happening there, but that's most likely a launcher issue. Id replace it to see if that problem goes away. Its easily done with nothing loss.

Well i did a factory reset and as of now, it works ok. I figured out it might have been some games to which i made backup with an app and then restore the app data, i wish it would be a easier way to backup app data without root. Hopefuly kit kat will solve some of the issues.
