CM9 Instability Question - Motorola Droid X2

I'm running the CM9 beta and while I really like the interface and smoothness of ICS, I get loads of random lockups and restarts. Is this typical? Is there any way around it? It seems as if some people are running this ROM without much trouble which makes me wonder why I'd be subject to a different experience.
any thoughts or suggestions? is there anything I can do increase stability?
thanks

If you're running a lot of media on it, say: pics, movies, web browsing with many pics or gifs to load they it can give it some trouble. Play around with it for a bit and see what it likes and what it doesn't. CM9 is really nice.

I have a thread addressing this issue. You may want to check it out.

Fixed Permissions and that didn't seem to help anything. My phone could just be sitting on my desk and it will suddenly restart. only real widget I'm running is Beautiful Widgets weather/clock combo. Had been running Go Launcher, but disabled it to no effect. I'm somewhat at a loss as to what I can even try at this point.

I seemed to have more problems with it when I tried to supercharge. But when I was first trying to do it, it wasnt 100% supercharged. I figured out the right way of getting it fully supercharged and it ran smoother than ever. Still some lockups and reboots now and then but thats expected. Our ICS ROMs aren't perfect. I also found that flashing the ROM without wiping data sometimes made things worse. Now that I figured out how to do things right, every ICS ROM we have runs smooth. Other than the random reboots every now and then. Those wont go away.

I been running paranoid android for 2 days now. Not one reset or real issue yet. I use fast reboot pro from play store though

Another suggestion is to use system tuner to disable apps from starting up that do not need to be running. That's seems to have helped quite a bit.

Just wanted to update this for others having some stability issues.
I wanted to flash the bluesleep fix. So I copied it to my phone, made a nandroid, and flashed it. While in the BSR I decided to flash the mashups.
reboot, major problems as you'd guess. read up on it, reflash CM9, things are ok, but I revert back to my nandroid just to be safe. then I flash the bluesleep fix.
now...super stable. a couple of random reboots but no where near as many. what fixed it, the bluesleep fix? just mucking with it? no idea. moral of the story may be to apply the blue sleep fix, or take a nandroid and then restore it. I have no idea, but now I'm really loving my CM9.

Paranoid android has the blue sleep fix and mash up as part of the rom

CM7 mash up

Is there any reason for me to install this? I've read numerous times that CM7 alone is good enough but I've become addicted to messing with my phone and if this improves something I would like to try it. Guess I'm just asking for opinions.

I ran it for a few days and then flashed back to stock build prop. I felt I did not need it Imho.
Thanks for the quick response! I have no reason to mess with things other than to mess with them. I will leave as is.

Lol I know I was used to flashing and changing things on the roms to try to improve them but CM7 was one that I found ran best when you just leave it alone. I did see the supersu app fixed the super user issues for me when I was still using CM7.
What is the super user error that occurs?
All my apps and market work only mod I have is the mash up.
As far as I know mashup is suppose to improve Signal and lowers battery consumption
Sent from my MB870 using Tapatalk
There is times when you go to use a rooted app it will freeze. You have to foreclose the app and then re open it. With the supersu app that stopped happening.
I'm running the mash up on cm7. And I like it. Videos definitely load faster and battery life improved somewhat! Haven't noticed as many 3g drops either.

ICS bugs seem to be device specific

I noticed something interesting with the latest ICS leak. I have a black/blue note and I flashed the DAG alpha rom and the phone works great. It reboots properly, SMS always works...in general its great.
My girlfriends white note, i followed the same procedure, same rom and hers is actually showing all the bugs everyones reporting. Her sms stops working, sometimes camera FCs, cant reboot using the menu and in general seems buggy.
It is definately interesting how the rom acts completely different on my girlfriends phone.

I generally find that restoring backups of apps and data leads to a lot of issues arising after a new flash, especially between a major version.
For the record I don't do backups, and haven't experienced any of the issues mentioned in other threads apart from poor signal. This was the same with the i9220 ICS leak on the N7000 - ran perfectly fine for me, but everyone had random FCs and whatnot, and found it unstable.
It may take longer to re-install all your apps from the Market one-by-one, but you generally reap the rewards in stability after a fresh flash, especially jumping between Android versions.
Of course everyone's mileage may vary, and I know a lot of people swear by their backups
I have a white one and have had absolutely no issues. I would definitely have her re flash it.

I have the Black Note from Rogers and I have not seen any issues other than TWLauncher Force Closing a few times. I run Nova Launcher Now and it stopped.

2x this, only takes me 15 mins to reinstall apps. Paid/tried TB, don't care for it.
I flashed ics 4 times, every which way and still have the annoying TW crash. Tried other launcher and they are laggy, although, Nova seems to be the smoothest but still laggy.
I ended up just flashing back to stock GB. Hopefully, official ICS will be released soon.

I'm running a white model, with the 'official' ICS leak and Nova Launcher Prime.
For those of you experiencing the 'Unfortunately, TwLauncher has stopped' crash, try a factory data reset (not a re-flash). You will always ALWAYS get a crash on the first Tw launch after a fresh flash, however I got numerous crashes so affected a factory reset and cache wipe through CWM. This fixed it for me and I haven't had one (I'm back and forth between TW and Nova).
For those experiencing lag, especially in third-party Launchers, there is a thread in the Development section called 'build.prop tweaks'. Get yourself a root-enabled editor (Root Explorer works fine), and edit the build.prop file to include all the mentioned tweaks (the Dalvik VM heap-size ones already appear, so you can just edit them - add the others in manually to the end of the build.prop file, you can use a # on lines that you don't want the machine to read for comments).
As an aside, you may or may not see an improvement in battery life with the 'power collapse' settings. For those with poor battery life now, try it out for certain. For those with good battery life currently (mine's better than GB by a long shot), when I tried this I lost power considerably quicker. You can easily edit those two lines out if need be.
These have improved overall zip for me measurably, and especially in Nova. Also, changing the scroll animations in Nova will have a marked impact on the overall performance for you.

Haptic feedback issues?
Hey ive got a white Note and i seem to have an issue (albeit small) where the vibration for the home soft key is delayed. Not a show stopper, but is pretty annoying. So could this be some sort of discrepancy between the internation Note's ICS build theyre also working on? (international has a hard home button, so i presume it wouldnt vibrate when pressed)
Anyway i was just wondering if anyone else had this problem?
I have that vibration thing too...but it doesn't annoy me. It kinda turns me on.

I have a black note on Rogers. I tried both the collective and alpha 1 roms and had a weird phantom vibration thing happening randomly. I had restored apps but not data using Titanium Backup. I flashed alpha 2 but this time installed all apps straight from the market, no TB, and I haven't had any issues or force closes at all, not even the TW launcher.

3x this. I've never done backups for any of my rooted, rom'ed Android tabs and phones. Have yet to see any issues aside from the general bugs everyone has with the ICS leak.
Google does basically everything I need in the cloud.
My Notes performance became unbearable. But I reinstalled the ICS leak and this time reinstalling my apps on an as needed basis. The result has been no lagging or fcs.
So that leads me to believe my issues have been application related. I will eventually find out which one but I have my suspicions.

I went back to gb. That leak was real bad. Lots of freezing and little issues. Don't say its my device, because i have 2 and both had a lot of the same little issues. The only thing i miss is mms pics being zoomable.

I can 3rd this. Its running with zero problems on my device, both A1 and A2 of DaGr8's ROM. It could have been the method you used to flash the ROM, or some of the programs you possibly backed up, but for me i have had zero reboots, only one FC on Touchwiz which i don't use anymore, and no other glitches.
i switched back to GB too, ICS was almost perfect, only Navigon and tether not working (unless paying $50 to ATT).
I miss ICS, fell much smoother than GB, will switch back when we have more steady ROM.
I'm using Alpha II on both mine and my wife's - no issues. As for the keyboard, I'm using the latest Swiftkey 3 Tablet beta.
Out of the number of already active threads on the subject you needed your own?

I didnt install any backups. I have all the apk's and use appmonster to install them all.
in mms the send and attach buttons where switched and my wife *****ed cause she kept hitting the attach button when she was trying to send.
I dont want a custom rom. If the self installing exe leak rom might be the problem, what other way can it be flashed? Only other thing i did was flash recovery and install SU
If you're having problems most people would say install fresh and DO NOT use a program to restore apps, download them one by one thru the app store.

yeah no kidding. I just said i install all my apps from apk's. Appmoster only starts the apk install one after another. it doesnt install them for you and its not backups.... its apk's
Another thing was the appliction monitor was always turning red just from having something as simple as web browser openned. The memory management seemed to be horable.
Im trying to locate another way to install, maybe odin or something.
It's too bad your against trying any custom roms. For one they get rid of all that at&t stuff you possibly never use; By doing that extra memory is freed up in the process. I didn't have that many issues when I flashed the self installing leak, but I decided to go with DAGR8's Alpha 2, it's faster than the stock leak was. Every time I re-flash a phone, I re-install everything from market, I don't backup anything. It doesn't take that long to type in my user / password and have everything synced back from the market anyway.

that must be it. Like i said, ics leak is crap. its only good if you take and screw and tweak it.
its gonna be real sad when att pushes ota ics update. the phone is going to become a joke in the eyes of regular people who dont mess with these things
I'm running the leak as is, with no mods or root or anything, and it is ****in' fabulous. Aside from the known issue of the TW launcher initially crashing once or twice, it has been pretty much flawless.

CM7 vs. Eclipse 2.2

Help a noob out? I have a virgin DX2 - never rooted - freshly updated to 2.3.5 (was in the soak) - and I'm finally ready to root it and try out a ROM. I've been lurking here for a week or so reading & trying to learn all I can about the process - and I think I'm ready to give it a shot.
Obviously Step 1 is to SBF back to 2.3.4 so I can get rooted, but after that is where I'm running into some indecision. I can't decide if I want to go straight to CM7 from there - or follow the instructions to keep root, SBF back to 2.3.5 and install Eclipse 2.2.
I know both ROMs have their loyal followers and I'm sure either would be a big improvement over stock Blur... and I know it's easy enough to try BOTH of them once I get the hang of all this... but I'd still appreciate some advice about which to try first.
For those of you who've tried both, which do you prefer? What are the pros & cons of each?
Thanks!

I'm guessing you've seen this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1632111
Seems to center around Eclipse and CM7 mostly. Eclipse can be a bit more polished in my estimation, mostly due to HDMI, FM radio, less buggy, you know, all the bells and whistles working. For the most part, either way you go you'll be fine.
Currently I have myself and my wife on CM7, we both like it. No real issues to speak of.
I personally perfer CM7RC1 its a solid daily driver very minor issues and I never get bored with it. Here's my overview of both ROMs.
CM7RC1
Pros:
Extremely Smooth.
Lots Of Mods/Tweaks.
Endless Customization.
Gingerbread 2.37
Theme Engine.
Wifi Tethering
Fully AOSP.
Toggles.
Cons:
HDMI Mirroring Is Unsupported.
FM Radio Is Unsupported.
Bugs:
Data Triangle. (Fixed By Reboot, *228)
Battery Exclamation. (Fixed By Reboot)
Some Experience Wifi Connecting Issues. (Fixed By Manual Connect)
Eclipse 2.2
Very Smooth.
Few Mods/Tweaks.
Limited Customization.
Gingerbread 2.35.
Flashable Themes.
AOSP/BLUR Hybrid.
Toggles.
Cons:
Lack Of Customization.
Is Only Gingerbread 2.35.
No Tethering.
Bugs:
Some Experience Wifi Resetting. (No Fix ATM)

I have tried out every x2 rom under the sun and as of right now I think your best bet is cm7. I would recommend running the cm7 mash up script, along with the dual core script, because with both of these the res is flawless.
but of course, I think you should try both of them out because it is personal preference. And if we get cm9 here soon then we will all be happy little cracked out, flashed up, ics'd whores with everything we can dream of for the x2, with some extra feta cheese.

This is a fair evaluation of both ROMs but really it all boils down to personal preference and things like if you need HDMI and stuff like that...I personally never use HDMI or the FM radio...but still liked eclipse and that's what I have on my wife's phone albeit its 2.1...I am sure when CM9 comes out she will like to try it...in short flash them both run them for a week or so and see which one you like and go from there

Just a caution on CM7; I haven't tried the latest release but on the first release the camcorder continuous auto-focus didn't function. It seemed to focus once when you press the shutter button and remain fixed, and sometimes that focus was in error itself. Not a lot of people seem to care about that but my phone has the heavy responsibility of archiving my sons' most important memories for them to look back on when they are older, so I just went back to stock rom. Other than that, CM7 seemed great.
I use CM7RC1 Dual Core Script, Build Prop Mashup, 8 Touch Point Mod, Cron Scheduler, Beats Audio, 3 CDMA Mods. My phone is blazing fast!
Sent from my MB870 using xda premium
In my experience the beats audio hack ruined my sound quality. Also the dual core script......Our 2nd core boots up automatically when there's a demand for more memory. Dragonzkiller even stated this is the dual core script thread. Keeping both on at all times pretty much only drains your battery faster. Only difference I noticed with it was the home screen animations were a little snappier. Wasn't enough change in performance for the lack of battery IMHO. Just a few things if you go the CM7 route. Never tried Eclipse so I can't help you there.

Why do these keep popping up...the search bar is definitely not be used...
Anyways...Eclipse is literally a hair slower than cm7 but it is worlds more stable. Wifi on Eclipse far better than cm7's. Cm7 has some SU issues but they can be fixed by installing Super SU from the market and getting rid of the normal SU app.
Tethering is easier on cm7 is strong -- heat is something you'll have to worry about. I've tethered on Eclipse through the use of a Market app so a little more work must be done there.
Downside to Eclipse is that you must go to 2.3.5 to use it whereas Cm7 is 2.3.4. Battery life on Eclipse is better for me. I've had serious computer trouble this past month and have had to do some research for papers on my phone! With the brightness on full, Gmusic/Pandora/power amp going and internet on my battery would last ~6-9 hours.
I should also mention that I have the Second Core Script going and my battery life took a very small. Not backbreaking but noticeable.
Not going to lie ; your phone will heat up slightly more regardless of the rom you're on when you use the script
Personally I enjoy Eclipse much more than cm7. Blue is my favorite color
Come over to the dark side...
Hmm haven't ran into any sound issues yet. As far as the dual core script I understand the core will activate on demand. The thing is this only happens when the CPU becomes so over tasked by processes it create a short lag before kicking in. This script makes that laggy transition disappear. I would only recommend this script for people with the extended battery like me tho.

Obviously, lol... no "lag" or time needed to boot because its already always on...
Did you use the script editor in ROM toolbox to apply it, sealedfate? If so do you check apply on boot, or do you only use it when you see fit?

If you have a X2 now I would say you have to try them both. Run one for a couple of weeks do a nano back up and then try the other for a couple of weeks. Then you can decide which you like better. Or you can do like I did and just keep going back and forth every few weeks because you love them both
I have the script in system/ect/init.d so it applies on boot. Helps a hell of a lot with 3D games.

Actually, like I said in my first post, I'm been doing nothing but searching and reading on here for the past week or so. Eclipse 2.2 just dropped a week ago, so I was looking for fresh opinions from people who had tried CM7 and that version specifically.
I appreciate all the helpful comments from everyone though. I think I'll do like a few of you suggested and try them both eventually... starting with CM7.
Hopefully we can all add CM9 to the list of ROMs to try very soon!

Yep! I've been following his Twitter feed and the "CM9DX2 anticipation" thread on here. Can't wait to see how it goes. Sounds like he's REAL close!
Success! Following Moon Shadow's instructions to the letter, I successfully SBF'd back to 2.3.4, rooted, and installed CM7 without any problems whatsoever. CM7 is up and running! Just need to get my apps reinstalled and I'll be good to go. Man... you guys weren't kidding. The phone is SOOOO much faster/smoother now, it's not even funny. Should have done this a long time ago.
Thanks everyone!
OK, it appears that I spoke too soon. I realized soon after that the Google apps did not get loaded on my phone (Gmail, Maps, Nav, YouTube, etc.), but some of the other apps in that same ZIP file DID get installed (Talk). Also, my old background pic was still on the phone.
I was able to download/install the missing Google apps without any problem and they all work perfectly (including Nav from the car dock) - and everything else has been running flawlessly. The phone is very fast & smooth... no bugs... not a single force close or reboot yet after fairly heavy use for the last couple of days.
So... obviously something didn't go perfectly with my install, but as far as I can tell, everything is fine with the phone. How can I tell if I'm missing anything else? Should I just keep what I have or SBF back to 2.3.4 and start over again? I'm perfectly happy with it right now - but maybe I don't know what I'm missing.

Not sure how anyone might be able to tell you what you might be missing on your phone. It is pretty basic what you get, not a lot of bells and whistles put in by default.
Not aware of a comprehensive list of what you should have exactly.

Jelly Bean Talk

So as we all know, we now have Jelly Bean. And to not flood dragonzkillers thread with general talk about it, I thought I'd start a thread for people to come and say what they like, what they dont like, and tips and tricks they might have, cool settings in the ROM, etc. Any issues should still be posted in the other thread.
But let me go ahead and start by saying I am so amazed at how smooth and fast jelly bean is on our phone. I never thought it would run better than ICS. The built in quick reply for messaging is awesome. I actually find a lot of things I used to use getting replaced with the stock apps. The default browser is nice. I have also found that if you use Nova launcher, though, and set the animation speed and scrolling speed to a faster setting, it makes the phone feel even smother.
Anyway, I'm not gonna make this post too long. So thats all I have right now. What does everyone else think?
I can't wait to flash this on my room mates phone, he's been *****ing about CM9 not working that well. I was just about to revert him back to Eclipse when I noticed DzK once again did his magic!!

He'll definitely like CM10 more. A lot more stable. Do you do all his flashing for him? Meaning he's not very tech savvy? If so, there may be things he runs into that you might need to help him with. lol. SD storage is all different and some apps wont install from the play store. He might just have new things to ***** about. lol

After a few days running this ROM I can happily say that it feels like this was made for our phone...as in, it's a perfect fit and feels natural. No random reboots. A couple app freezes but they correct themselves. I've found workarounds to get the apps I needed on the phone.. the Facebook crapp....err, app is glitchy like usual but there's always friendcaster. Love the screen transition animation. Its just amazing all around.
Made a video of my first boot of cm10 for anyone who's hesitant to flash and wants to see how it is.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVDTB4uwM3w&feature=youtube_gdata_player

I'm amazed how well it run. The only issues I have really had is the Facebook app and the Email app (for my work Exchange email) tend to be a little crashy (FB is worse than any others), but I can deal with that to have a phone I can actually use. This is my first ROM on this phone (had many on my OG Droid), but the process isn't as bad as I had anticipated.
Can't wait for him to release Alpha 2 to fix the camera and SD issues.
flashed this and i was amazed at the number of custom options as well as how smooth it actually was. however, i was plagued with having to reSBF, reroot and reflash almost everytime i reboot and i needed my phone today so i sbf'd back to 2.3.5 and restored eclipse.
hopefully alpha 2 is even more stable.
Something didn't install right if you can't reboot.... did you install the hijackboot.zip? I'm still loving this ROM.

So far I love CM10. I was frequently getting frustrated with how slow my phone felt. I was last running 2.3.4 using Eclipse ROM and my phone would hang everywhere, especially waiting for the keyboard to pop up. Now everything is nice and quick. My only real complaints is that when I try to change the battery state LED options, the field to change the frequency of them is greyed out, and they are all on "always on" and the field is greyed out and I can't change them. I hate having a LED on when I'm sleeping so I had to just turn the whole setting off so now I have no LEDs for battery states.
My other complaint is how fast CM10 sucks down my battery. Under the same conditions that Eclipse on 2.3.4 would get me from morning until 9pm until depleted, my phone keeps dying at 5pm.

you should SBF to 2.3.5, root and try eclipse 2.3 and then supercharge it. makes for an amazing daily. it's what i'm doing now with holo launcher recently added.
Random thought/question. Cm7 was gingerbread.... Cm9 was ICS and 10 is JB... what happened to 8? Meant for HC?

Yeah. CM8 was honeycomb. Not many devices had that though.
Yep, mostly designed for tablets

While team battery life isn't bad, it is definitely worse than eclipse. To be expected I suppose since we have a jb rom running on a gb kernel. My question Houghton, is does Google Now drain team battery? I think it's cool but I would take the longer battery.... Thanks

Really loving JB for the last 4 days. Only 1 problem with it so far... nothing can find my SD card. Well, almost nothing. I can find it in file explorer. Anyone else notice this?

I use Root Explorer. You'll see a folder called "storage", a within it youll find sdcard0 and sdcard1. That's how I access them.

tried a2 cm10 then reverted back to my cm7.2 nandroid
I like how this is going. I used it for about 2 hours then realized Netflix was still a no go and my Andygraph Ti82 calc app wouldn't load the Rom and my saved programs. That was a deal breaker. I might give alpha 3 or beta 1 another shot. Loved it for a short time. The voice call dropping needs to be fixed as well before I can use it as a daily. Reloaded my nandroid of cm 7.2. Everything still works there.
