I went backwards ;-) ics leak no good - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I went back to gb. That leak was real bad. Lots of freezing and little issues. Don't say its my device, because i have 2 and both had a lot of the same little issues. The only thing i miss is mms pics being zoomable.
I hated the keyboard and some other Stuff
To me it felt more like a screwed up no good custom Rom by a rookie

It wasn't your device. It was both of them. It runs like a dream on my phone, not one freeze or any little issues at all.

I second this. mine runs flawlessly on DAGr8 alpha 1 version, not even 2.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium

I can 3rd this. Its running with zero problems on my device, both A1 and A2 of DaGr8's ROM. It could have been the method you used to flash the ROM, or some of the programs you possibly backed up, but for me i have had zero reboots, only one FC on Touchwiz which i don't use anymore, and no other glitches.

i switched back to GB too, ICS was almost perfect, only Navigon and tether not working (unless paying $50 to ATT).
I miss ICS, fell much smoother than GB, will switch back when we have more steady ROM.

I'm using Alpha II on both mine and my wife's - no issues. As for the keyboard, I'm using the latest Swiftkey 3 Tablet beta.

Out of the number of already active threads on the subject you needed your own?
Thur u arrrrrrgh

I notice the occasional hitch for a few minutes after a restart of the phone but after that everything is fine, though i cant seem to get samsung apps working and lost compatibility with a few apps that don't work even when sideloaded. Gonna stick it out till the final build is ready though.

i used the self installing exe rom. The original leak, not a custom rom. I dont want a custom rom either.
I didnt install any backups. I have all the apk's and use appmonster to install them all.
in mms the send and attach buttons where switched and my wife *****ed cause she kept hitting the attach button when she was trying to send.
I dont want a custom rom. If the self installing exe leak rom might be the problem, what other way can it be flashed? Only other thing i did was flash recovery and install SU

If you're having problems most people would say install fresh and DO NOT use a program to restore apps, download them one by one thru the app store.

yeah no kidding. I just said i install all my apps from apk's. Appmoster only starts the apk install one after another. it doesnt install them for you and its not backups.... its apk's
Another thing was the appliction monitor was always turning red just from having something as simple as web browser openned. The memory management seemed to be horable.
Im trying to locate another way to install, maybe odin or something.

It's too bad your against trying any custom roms. For one they get rid of all that at&t stuff you possibly never use; By doing that extra memory is freed up in the process. I didn't have that many issues when I flashed the self installing leak, but I decided to go with DAGR8's Alpha 2, it's faster than the stock leak was. Every time I re-flash a phone, I re-install everything from market, I don't backup anything. It doesn't take that long to type in my user / password and have everything synced back from the market anyway.

so everyone happy with the ics must be running deodexex roms??????
that must be it. Like i said, ics leak is crap. its only good if you take and screw and tweak it.
its gonna be real sad when att pushes ota ics update. the phone is going to become a joke in the eyes of regular people who dont mess with these things

I'm running the leak as is, with no mods or root or anything, and it is ****in' fabulous. Aside from the known issue of the TW launcher initially crashing once or twice, it has been pretty much flawless.

ICS Leak--how do you guys like it?

With the i717 ICS leak yesterday, I figured someone would have already posted this question.
I am on the fence on if I should apply it on my stock phone. Is it faster/smoother/stable?
If you have the AT&T leak from yesterday, if you wouldn't mind sharing your opinion on your device. I read someone was going back to GB and was trying to figure out why you would do that at all.
its not a terrible release at all. its mostly stable. there are some quirks in it but nothing earth shattering. if you have a stock note then id say go with ics.
i myself am planning on going back to GB. i want to wait until theres more development with ICS before i reflash again. i miss saurom.

I'm using the leaked stock ICS leak & it's awesome. I did have to remove all the AT&T bloatware with TiBU or settings > apps to un-install. I get a little lag when trying to scroll fast in settings > apps & in TiBu but besides that, it has been very stable for me. The only issue I had was with VVM but figured it out with the help of a forum poster.
You could always use DAG (creator of Saurom) modified stock ICS leak version. I'm using this as a daily driver & left GB behind in the past.
Its fun but...
Some apps keep crashing...right now I can't get google play to even load
Edit-Fixed problem by restoring backed up version of play store....just switched from iOS and still learning to problem solve I guess.
Thanks all.
So it appears to be pretty good if you treat it like a fresh install and not an upgrade. My gut tells me that the over the air update from AT&T is going to likely be the same for all intents and purposes.
So I did it yesterday and found out that you have no choice BUT to wipe the phone clean. I didn't know applying the update would annihilate everything. Oh well...it's cool and most things are in the cloud (with the exception of saved games).

I did a total wipe, but all of my pics were still there when the dust settled. I find this odd because when I returned my first Note to AT&T the Factory Data Reset didn't wipe them either.
But, I am not going back to GingerBread until the official ICS is released.

Why would you go back to Gingerbread?
Also, yeah--I noticed that it doesn't touch the SD card at all (so all my documents and pictures were still on the SD card when my phone was running GB). This time around, I just backed up the contents of the SD card onto the external one.

I would go back to GingBread to get the official AT&T Rom via OTA. Unless I happen to find a Rom that offers a truer ICS experience.

You mean with no Touch Wiz? I wouldn't mind that either, but I have to say Touch Wiz is WAY better on ICS than it is on GB.

Yeah, I would like as close to stock ICS as possible. I don't mind touchwiz at all really.
DAGr8's rom is super smooth for me.
Been using Apex Launcher and I like the look and options paired up with ICS but the launcher lag when returning to the home screen after a few minutes is annoying.
I'm liking it a lot. GB worked fine, but I prefer the ICS interface, it's a lot cleaner.
As some have mentioned, using 3rd party launchers have created a little lag, but if you go that route, a minor minor delay shouldn't stop you from using the launcher.
having said that, this is an alpha build. the bugs are surprisingly minimal and that makes me happy. can't wait for overclocking
i want to be able to drag an app on to an app to make a folder. can't do that on TW even though it is a feature of ICS...
in the facebook app you have to press an hold the + for a solid second or two before it will give you the option to like a post. not sure if this is FB on ICS or ICS on the Note or what.

I think the leaked version from RootWiki is pretty much stable and Im going to stay with it. There are some lags and weird things that happen from time to time but I can live with it. my main worry was that I would not have 4G. Well after hours of figuring out why I kept getting errors when flashing the radio i finally got it and now i have 4G. so this will be my daily driver. Now its time to experiment. cheers.

I used saurom with the ICS style theme, and while I was able to over clock it and get everything looking perfect.. this stock ICS runs smoother than the overclocked GB rom.
I'm very pleased and won't be going back. Hopefully a pure ICS rom comes soon enough, but until then I'm happy with this ICS leak.

Need Testers - Hopefully Better Multitasking (Flashable Zip Inside)

first thing, this wont brick your device (0% chance)
what i have done is patched the services.jar to allow more apps to stay in memory (up to 8 i think)
ive been using it and so far my browser have not reloaded once, only when i load up over 8 apps at the same time
this means your phone will have less available memory, but its being put to good use, since its not being used anyway lol
the main change ive noticed so far is improvement in the browser, way less reloads.
i need a couple people to flash this and report your findings
it also makes your phone UI a bit faster as well. lemme know. maybe its a placebo for me, which i hope im wrong

Another note is Mikey mentioned he fixed MeanROM on the previous base to have a higher OOM priority (lower number) for the browser, gapps, and other stuff so they wouldn't get killed so easily.
Any thoughts on doing the same thing also? I have no idea if Auto Memory Manager works on ICS, that allows you to modify the OOM priority for specific apps.

just can't get a reliable Rom

please, somebody please help me get a useable phone again. I'm not sure if it's how I'm flashing, the roms I'm using, or if it's just what I have to deal with. things have sucked ever since the first jb Rom I've tried.
I've had the awful non-responsive home button issue across all roms. constant random reboots, and fcs constantly. messaging, email, system ui.. everything. battery barely gets me through work. a phone should not work like this, and this stuff didn't used to happen with ics.

Jellybean or ICS?
Sent from one bad ass, highly modified, Samsung Galaxy Note running Novena A3 using the BEST in mobile apps, XDA-Developers!
I've run several very good, stable ROMs. ICS: BlackStarVII, VIII, IX and X.
JB: Eclipse 2.0 and currently running CM10 Stable.
All of these run flawlessly for me. I flashed all with CMW.
There are plenty of stable roms out there. BlackStarX Is very stable. It is stock with the ability to tweak and customize. you would need to give more details of how your installing
swyped on my huge phone
For the home button issue, if you flash one of the "alternate" kernel's, it fix's the home button issue (or at least, it did for me).
As for a rom, I use FJ's JethroBubba w/o issue, have had 200hrs~ uptime on my phone and would have had longer if I wasnt such a flash-o-hollic and flashed the updates for it nearly the next day...
Its not for everyone, but its solid as a rock for me.

I am so ****ing fed up with this phone. please someone help me out... after loving it for months I'm so close to selling it. just problem after problem on any Rom I try. right now I can't even use my phone to make calls. it rings on the other end but there is silence on my end. I tried clearing phone data in apps, tried fixing permissions, rebooting several times. I've had this issue on each Rom on and off. right now on cm10.. forget the exact nightly but I think the one after stable.
I just don't understand. it has to be something I'm doing or not doing since everyone else is having luck getting reliability. could using cwm instead of twrp somehow make for a more reliable flash? what else could I possibly try? maybe someone could list exact steps of how they're flashing, and what they're using to do so. I would be so grateful.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
are you flashing them correctly?
Wipe data/cache/dalvik
using twrp2.. I factory reset, wipe data/cash, and dalvik. flash Rom. flash gapps. fix permissions. boot. it seems sometimes the Rom auto restores my apps. if not I restore apps with tibu.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
Your not restoring the data for apps on tibu are up? And jellybean for the note is a wip we do not have an official kernel source so its gonna be wonky sometimes. Some ROMs are better than others but they all fail every now and then jellybean ones anyways. Have u tried novena? Its a very nice and fast ICS ROM.
Family alliance
maybe I'll try going back to ics. disappointing since jb had some nice features. I've tried restoring just apps and apps plus data. but I've also flashed roms where I didn't need tibu and still same issues. but so many people are claiming reliability on these jb roms. not sure if mine is different or they just have lower expectations
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
Deep Breath....then pause, and think about this for a minute...
It is "VERY" likely that your problems are user related...(not to sound mean or insulting, because I do "NOT" intend to be..) But...
Roms coming to us are for the most part...clean. A factory build with mild tweaks, and certainly stable for every day use.
The problems come when users dont "clean" the device properly on a fresh flash, or they restore bits of previous rom data from non-compatible builds.
Now I make screw up's too, after nearly 10 years of android hacking. I'll forget a wipe function, or restore an app with TIBU that should "NOT" get put back without a clean app install.
Long story short, the roms here are solid in the ICS realm, and are very good in the JB side too....
I suggest Blackstar as a top pick, also the UCLF6 ICS build #5 from flappjaxxx....
Both are rock solid, and if you exhibit any problems beyond the normal android hickups, then it is likely a user/device issue, and not the rom itself....g
To follow Sarge, try a clean install of all apps from the market. Its a pain to reenter data, etc. but it sounds like you're already in pain.
Its really not that difficult. I will agree that some roms are more stable than others. Most of the JB roms do have some random issues. Here is the thing though. When you start flashing custom roms, you need to accept that you might encounter minor issues. If you are not willing to live with those issues or find work arounds, then you need to flash back to stock and be happy.
Keep in mind that devs have source code to work with ICS roms. Since Samsung hasn't dropped JellyBean source for this device, the current builds are all based on the google opensource code, without many of the device specific drivers.
Others have mentioned and I agree 100%, reinstall all of your user apps out of the play store. I don't trust any of the app backups from TiBU or any other tool. I also do a complete wipe and format everything between roms. You have to have some level of patience to dabble in the custom rom world, and it sounds like you might be missing that. See what you got after an initial install, don't overclock or change any performance settings...Install just the basic apps, from the play store and see how things work for a day or so. If things seem smooth, then add some more apps. Many people try and do too much at one time, which make isolating the problem nearly impossible.
ok, right now I'm on novena... I really hate ics after using jb, but it appears to be quite good so far at least. been on it for a few days and not really any issues. this time I also installed using cwm instead of twrp. apps were restored automatically with play store. sometimes that doesn't happen.. is there any way to install through play store if it doesn't do it automatically?

YES!!!!! If you are not going to root and install a custom ROM, the ICS build has way better battery life and 80% less bloat. It should run smoother than the original FRYO build.
My recommendation tho would be to root it and install the debloated stock or a custon build by Santod once he finishes them up.
Good luck with your Bolt.

I have heard of some people having really bad lag and others for whom it worked really well. It may be an issue that actually effects each Bolt differently. However, I have noticed that many smartphone users, especially enthusiasts who frequent this forum and others, expect everything on their phones to happen instantly, quickly, the very second they click on it. Anything that takes a moment longer than that is considered "lag."
I ran the stock, unrooted ICS for several days and it ran really well. If you don't want to root her phone, or she doesn't want that, I would go ahead and take the upgrade because it is leaps and bounds ahead of froyo, GB, and Sense 2.1. Any actual lag won't even really be noticeable and the signal and battery life will improve. One thing I learned from rearing posts from early stock upgraders is that you should delete her texts before upgrading. For some reason, having lots of texts in there prior to upgrading created serious lag when opening the SMS app.

I've noticed the lag also. I'm pretty sure it's a sense issue. Installed nova launcher and have no lag issues with lag when I use it.
Also, remember that people perceived "lag" differently. So to some the stock ICS rom is laggy while to others its smooth. Unfortunately without rooting her device she won't be able to experience the difference and to decide if its worth it.

Downloaded Nova launcher, HUGE difference... Running much better now!
I never understood why people think that a different launcher on top of sense makes it run better?
Please explain it to me because the way I understood it was that sense was still all there and running in the background and you just added nova/whatever on top of it.
If thats the case another launcher can not reduce lag but if anything only add more.....
Again please inform me if I am misunderstanding this.

Please explain it to me because the way I understood it was that sense was still all there and running in the background and you just added nova/whatever on top of it.
If thats the case another launcher can not reduce lag but if anything only add more.....
Again please inform me if I am misunderstanding this.

I can't really argue that it doesn't make much sense, however using the stock launcher their would be huge lag when unlocking the phone or opening apps or the app drawer. After installing Nova Launcher the is no lag at all now. When I switch back to sense, the lag magically reappears.
No need to point out whether it seems to make sense or not. It’s the results that matter.
When you set your default launcher to Nova and the phone boots without launching the sense launcher which is technically just an app in the eyes of the phone, and the fact that Nova is better coded to be more efficient on memory/cpu/graphics I don't understand anyone's confusion on why using the launcher, or going back home from another app you would see speed increases/less lag. Not only is it much quicker, but it redraws a lot less, and I find that other apps run better with Nova running in the background as opposed to rosie.

My front camera, the one on the screen side, doesn't work in either camera or camcorder mode. Has anyone else noticed this? When I try to choose this camera, it just freezes and then goes back to the home screen.

Menu buttons
Hi
After the Verizon ICS upgrade, the lower menu buttons (home, menu, back and search) don't always light up. They seem to function ok but they are impossible to read in the dark. It seems to only happen now and then. I have not seen a pattern. Phone is not rooted. I did not notice this bad behaviour until after the ICS upgrade. It may just be a hardware issue on a 2.5 year old phone.
Anyone else notice this after ICS?
Thanks
John
No lighting problems but little things like that have me using a replacement launcher, messaging app, and locker.

My girlfriend's thunderbolt is still running good on stock unrooted FROYO. We have great LTE coverage. I never wanted to risk a bad update. I'm not going to root her phone. Is it worth the upgrade?

My two bits: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Your girlfriend has been happy this long on the FroYo stock unrooted phone? Why risk ruining that? No one wants an unhappy girlfiend (sic). If you're not going to root it, then there's no way to go back if you decide the upgrade is not so much "up". The exception may be if she's already planning on upgrading to a new phone: go ahead and go to ICS and see how it is, then if she doesn't like it she can at least move to a new phone with an extra few days experience with ICS, (her new phone won't likely have FroYo... )

[Q] any tips on how to speed up my note 2?

Hey there, I am looking for some instructions on how to speed up my phone. Ever since the latest update for Android it has been getting choppy/hanging and it is becoming frustrating especially when I am trying to get a girl's phone number how do I go about doing this? I suspect I had too many pictures and videos so I packed them all up but did not see any improvement in speed. Any fast ways to uninstall many programs quickly instead of having to do each one at a time? I know that I have tons of apps installed that I don't use anymore. Thank you for any help.

You can use a program like ROM ToolBox by JRummy to do batch operations like that. I'm sure there are countless others, I just happen to use that suite

A phone so hardware rich shouldn't give you those sort of issues. Is your device completely stock?

yes it is completely stock, never got into loading things like Cyanogen mod because I don't have any need to do so and also afraid of bricking. Thanks kil4thril ill check it out.
You'll have to be rooted to use rom toolbox.
even when you free up your RAM your phone still runs slow?

I'm stock as well and agree since the 4.3 update my phone has noticeably slowed down....very annoying.
Try removing your SD card if you have one installed. If you see improvement provide the brand and model of SD card.
I Can tell you I switched to Illusions ROM way before the official 4.3 ad it was so freakin fast. Now on CM11 and it is still freakin fast. Much faster than any TW rom.
But ya, you may need to at least root to use some tools to figure it out. I have been using Startup Manager to clean up whats loaded during startup. Its amazing how many apps set themselves to auto start at boot. And almost all are unnecessary.
