Consumer Reports rates SGS2 #1 smart phone - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Fellow Galaxy S-2 fans,
This month's Consumer Reports lists new ratings for cell phones. In the smart phone catagory, tied for first place are the Samsung Galaxy S-2 (AT&T) and the Samsung Infuse 4G, each with a score of 80. Third place among AT&T phones is the LG Thrill. Not until you get to forth place do you see a non-Android phone - the iPhone 4S. Not that we needed to be told, but it's nice to have some outside acknowledgment.
How cool is that?

While it's nice that we're supposedly #1, CR has lost a lot of credibility over the years, and unfortunately these results confirm that...
For the Thrill to beat any iPhone means they have no idea how poor that device is. The Thrill had awful battery drain issues.
Not saying that I don't think the I777 deserves #1, however, there's no way in hell the Thrill is ranked over an iDevice in any real ranking due to its battery issues.

I'd never buy one but the thrill is underrated. If you look past the 3d, which is just a "bonus" I guess, the device is powerful. For the normal consumer that is... Which is what consumer report is for. Maybe not the thinnest phone, or best developer following, but it holds its own. Again, if never buy one.

I used a Thrill for quite some time and I really liked the device. I had good battery life with it and had very little problems with it.

Looks like Apple finally didn't pony up enough money to buy off their reviews. Or Samsung just paid more.

Maybe apple should threaten them with a bogus patent lawsuit?

Agree completely. The thrill has serious issues. As much as i love android I would get an iPhone 4 over it. Had more than one friend go down the dual channel memory trail and all came back pissed. The 3d is whatever, but the device as a whole is a battery killing lag fest. Typical LG in other words. I hate to sound so negative but that's just how I see it. Hell I have a wp7 focus I prefer over the thrill.

Looks like the iPhone isn't as secure as they thought.

Was this from all phones or just the AT&T variety

Too bad Sprint screwed us customers out of our yearly upgrades. Dicks!

Ironically the iPhones are experiencing awful battery drain issues as well since updating to iOS 5, and no, 5.0.1 did not fix the issue for most.

[Q] USA vs international: Battery & CPU/GPU any info?

I have been waiting for the note to come to AT&T so I don't have the cost and risk of importing the international version. (I'm going to be with AT&T anyway so they may as well subsidise my costs).
My concern though is the commentary about how bad the snapdragon setup is vs the Sammy Ex CPU. Combine this with the extra drain on the battery from LTE and it's starting to look like a very gimped proposition in comparison to the international handset.
So my question is what is the real world difference between these handsets when it comes to CPU/GPU performance and battery life?
While I'd like to get this phone subsidized through AT&T I don't want to settle for a grossly inferior version of this excellent product.
Is this a half price Ferrari with a Fiat engine???
Extensive benchmarks and discussion are provided in the hands-on review in this very forum, re: CPU/GPU performance. Battery life is relatively under-discussed, however.

After all the ces coverage it got, I failed to notice any dicsernable difference in performance from the att version. The snapdragon processor is quite capable. If you have doubts, it should only be that 'some' devs will refuse to build roms for it because they feel that it is identical to the Skyrocket. And they apparently had so many problems deving for that. The device itself seems to run just fine for a high-spec superphone. As usual most people, maybe even you will probably consider running a different launcher to speed up performance even more. Such as Zeam- which is disgustingly smooth on nearly any android device. The battery life, from what ive heard, happens to be a standout feature on the device.
And in the end, if your market is getting lte this year, wont you want that 15ish mb data speed? Makes sense to me. rather than to go through the trouble of having to setup apns and such. Dont write it off just yet till you go into a store and test one out.

Skyrocket HD hasn't been released yet. No wonder they have so many problems deving for a phone that doesn't exist
they didn't necessarily have problems deving for it. They chose a device they were more comfortable with and impressed by. It also helped that the US version of the Orig gs2 came so late. All the real work was already done

Honestly they're simply on par with each other. The international wins in some benchmarks, and ours wins in others. Our battery life will be just as amazing as the international unless you're doing lots of downloading with LTE

I meant to say the skyrocket. Symantics aside, what I say is true. The only thing ive been seeing in the Infuse forum was people bashing the device for not being an Exynos-based phone. Which is just dumb, considering the fact that I, along with a lot of other people WANT lte. And I dont really think their will be any kind of noticeable difference in performance between the two processors. Besides, not many people can shell out 5-700 bucks for an international version. So the att subsidy is the only way to get one. Ide gladly have a few less roms, if i can save 2-300 bucks on the cost of the thing.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
Battery is/was/will be my main conern. While LTE would be nice, I really wouldn't use it that much as I have WiFi at work and home, so the concern was that LTE would just nuke my battery in 6hrs when I don't really care about it. On the flip side I have a grandfathered true unlimited plan for $30 so at least I can make full use of LTE should I need/want to.
On the processor front, I am coming from 4 years of iPhone ownership so I know I am going to have an expectation of smooth non-laggy performance in every aspect of the phone's use. I'm no Apple fan boi, but Ihave to acknowledge the quality of the UI experience on that phone and don't want to have to make excuses for less than premium performance on an Android 'Super Phone'.
I feel confident that the international version delivers on all these fronts judging from the stellar reviews it has received from so many sources, I just hope the AT&T version can continue to deliver the standards it's International cousin has set.

From what we've seen from the Korean version, and the AT&T version at CES and a couple lucky people that have had early hands on, it's just as fast and smooth as the Exynos version. Just with LTE baked in.

This, and on top of that, the LTE radio doesnt constantly search for signal. If you dont have it, then it wont be used. Likewise, If your not downloading anything, then setup a toggle on the homescreen to turn on/off data completely. Your problem is solved. I do this all the time with my infuse. When data is off all i can do is make calls and texts, all while saving a ton of battery life.
If your expectations are truly too high though, and youve never even touched an Android phone---there is absolutely no reason for you to try to make any comparisons at all between this and iOS. They are 100% different in so many aspects, and 0% the same in just as many. I came from an iPhone 3g after almost 2 yrs. The infuse was my first android phone, and I have to say-I wasnt expecting all the cool things that I experienced. At first its like the Iron curtain was lifted, and it became sooooooooo much easier to do everything I actually always wanted to do with a phone.
As far as Att's involvement in the phone is concerned. You CAN expect the usual bloat. But on phones these days, its easy enough to ignore. put them in a folder at the end of your apps list, done. Its like they were never there. once we have root on the device as well, its open season man. Youll be able to get all the apps you need to control every aspect of the phone that you can think of. Which is a godsend to any smartphone user. Especially if battery life is concerned.
In the end, you will NEVER stop learning, and finding out cool new things about any android phone. And I doubt you will ever look at apple products the same. This is coming from a self-proclaimed ex-Apple fanboy.
^ never owned an apple product but you hit the nail on the head with Android...there is always something new and exciting to try...
but if you think inside the ibox...best stay with it.
Android definitely has a learning curve, and is never ending fun if you think outside

Atrix vs i777

Hello!
I have an opportunity to trade my Atrix in for free for a brand new SGS i777.
Would you suggest I pull the trigger? Or stick with my current bad boy?
Thanks!!
I currently have both Atrix and I777. IMHO there is no clear winner and that is the reason, I keep switching back and forth between these two. Atrix has FingerScanner which I really find useful. I777 has NFC but no support. As I said, for me there is no winner. Others here might disagree and say I777 is better.
Lol, no clear winner? Come on man. I wouldn't wait another second to pull the trigger if I was you. You are basically robbing the poor sucker who is willing to trade with you, unless there is something seriously wrong with the i777.

Actually, my company is a corporate account with Att and we are a pretty large organization (s-oney) ... and, recently I was on an international business trip and my phone was not working well at all. Well, of course Att wants to protect their existing customer base (especially the larger accounts) and offered me a brand new replacement which is the i777 to keep me happy.. they said I don't need to upgrade my account or pay anything... Its just cause I said I will complain to our administration department who is responsible for the corporate accounts if they don't make me smile.. so this is their offer.
so, I think its a functional unit and has nothing wrong with it
Atrix vs i777
i777 has:
-A better screen
-A more powerful CPU and GPU
-Better community support
-Better cameras
-Touchwiz (an improvement to Android
Atrix has:
-Webtop
-Finder reader
-More games without rooting
-Blur (a detriment to Android)
Let's not forget Motorola's stance towards developers is even more awful than Samsung's.
Locked bootloaders for the lose.
I have had both, my Atrix was stolen so I got the SGS2 as a replacement, and I wouldn't even think of going back. It's a superior phone, period.
Okay, thanks for the input guys.. I just placed my order for a full free replacement kit. I also get free overnight shipping because "I always get subpar customer service from att"....
LOL
Thanks for all the help! My name is Alex, and I am excited to be a part of the new community.

So, you had a chance to use both, you know how Atrix is like and now have sample (through your work) using i777. Do you like i777 better or Atrix.
When I got mine I was researching between i777 and Atrix. I end up with i777 because it was the best choice for me. As stated in the earlier post Atrix has Blur (I hate Blur), so my choice was clear to get i777.

Guess you beat me to the punch. Glad that you decided to join us.
I was a previous owner of a Motorola Atrix and after switching to this phone I am really happy I did. There is a huge difference between the Atrix and Galaxy S II forum community. There are way to many trolls and rude people on the Atrix board and the development was fairly slow in comparison to how it is over here. As a phone the GSII is quite a bit better as well. I would definitively take the GSII over the Atrix any day.
I have an Atrix. I loved it, screen broke, got a SGSII.
I work next to a Radioshack. They are always giving their employees free AT&T phones. They always come to me to put new ROMS on them.
Did not enjoy blur whatsoever, nor the bootloaders. Could not make that phone anywhere as snappy as SGSII. Not even on the same level if you ask me. Now they have SGSII's next door, and boy are they happy with the stuff I do to their phones.
They still don't know **** about them... Always doing wifi speed tests against iPhones like that is some sort of benchmark. I lol a little everytime I flash a new kernel for them and they say their wifi speeds went up a little.
We have got to have one of the easiest phones to root/rom.
I also have both. I loved the Atrix but after dealing with the Sleep Of Death issue, and not getting cooperation from ATT to replace it since I bought it used. I used my wife's upgrade in December and picked up the SGS2. I dug my Atrix out the other day to flash CM9 on it for kicks and its a HUGE step back as far as display and build of device. Definitely a good choice to switch to the I777.
I'm surprised that this is a discussion. I found the Atrix to be atrocious.
Sgs2 over Atrix.

Just in case future readers care...(since the OP already made his decision)...
Came from 3gs months ago...got i777...thought I had screen burn so exchanged for Atrix 2...had it for less than a week and went back to get another i777. just liked it that much better...couldn't stay away.
Motorola advantages
Clearer small text with qHD display
Slightly louder in call volume
Nice grippy back cover (felt no desire to get a cover for it)
Samsung advantages - all else
More vivid display
Slightly quicker overall
Very much liked TouchWiz UI over others
Like I said, pretty much all else went to i777

I currently have both the i777 and the Atrix 2. If you actually use your phone as a phone and GPS navigation aid, Atrix 2 is hands down the better device. Call quality, data speeds, gps lock and accuracy, overall excellent build quality, as well as a better screen (I know you AMOLED fanboys hate that one) make the Atrix 2 the winner. Yes, the A2 locked bootloader is a drawback but...
I use the Atrix 2.
I play with the i777.
I returned the Galaxy Nexus.

I actually had the unbearable misfortune of being stuck on my dad's Atrix for a few days last week. The difference was ridiculous. Compared to the i777 the Atrix is laggy, tiny, buggy (stock Atrix, UnNamed i777), and overall worse.
Make the trade before they take the offer away.

Had the Atrix and the i777 and honestly the only thing that impressed me about the i777 was the screen.
As far as the Atrix goes, I didn't give two ****s for a finger print sensor or the useless laptop dock. Good idea but poor execution. Blur is absolute garbage and I got rid of that **** the day I bought the phone.
GS2i777 no complaints except the battery doesn't last as long. Atrix battery is slightly superior. Touchwiz although highly improved and refined versus Blur, I got rid of it too and used CM7 with ADW Ex on both phones and they both kicked major ass. Battery life on both phones was exceptional.
Performance wise, I don't know what you guys are doing with your phones like trying to power a goddamn nuclear fusion reactor or something but after highly modifying them to no end, I find them equal as far as performance goes. I don't care for any high intensity graphic and visually stunning games. I use both phones for work, email, occasional words with friends, a ton of assorted games and apps and mainly checking the web, sports, news, stocks, facebook every now and again.
I'm not talking about silly pointless benchmarks, I'm talking about real world performance, GPS was equal for both. The only reason I bought the i777 was for the screen. When I let someone mess around with my phone, every single one of them had the "awwww damn this screen is amazing" look on their faces.
I'm not starting a war with anyone, they're both badass phones. Everyone has their own opinions obviously so if you don't agree with mine then please flush it down the toilet.
Sold my i777 for the i9100 now my phone rapes all. :-D

Switch to incredible 4g from iPhone 4s

I'm thinking about doing it. Anyone else make the plunge? What do you think of the incredible vs the 4s?
I haven't but I guess it just depends on what you like or dislike about your operating system and the phone looks.
I've never owned an apple anything much less an Iphone. I will say this though, I do have friends that have Iphones and I watch them power it up, zip right to an app or go right to the phone and start dialing away, seems pretty fast to me. My Dinc is somewhat laggy compared to their speeds of hitting buttons, like waiting for my dialer to come up or say the market to load or other stuff.
Now I realize I got apps I've downloaded etc, but so have they. I'm not pitching a sales for Iphone because I am not an Apple fan however, I personally think the Iphone is a hell of a lot sexier than most any other makers phones available. That aluminum housing is just badass looking.
Also realize this is just my thoughts compared to an OG Dinc, I would imagine the Inc 4g should be a crapload faster than my Dinc....
My gf just got this phone from the iPhone 4 yesterday. She loves it so far and is absolutely amazed how much you can customize. She was a little overwhelmed from everything but that's just because the iPhone had literally nothing to customize. Screen is soo crisp, an phone is fast.

Yes. This phone is a world of difference from the original Incredible. I loved the original Incredible but there was never any question that the iPhone was smoother--just completely impossible to customize without jailbreaking. With the Incredible 4G and Ice Cream Sandwich optimizations, the difference is negligible. So now it's really just a question of whether you want customizability or not, and which UI design you prefer. I think Sense 4 is much more beautiful than iOS, but that's a matter of taste.

Polarimetric, that's good to hear, and what I was hoping to hear myself. One question though, I know I've heard of jailbreaking, and my interpretation of this was the same thing as rooting? If that's the case wouldn't the Iphone peeps have the same level as customizing their Iphones as we do our Androids?
I had a 4s prior. Yes pretty customizable if jailbroken, had nice themes. However I find myself preferring android, because of more options, connectivity, and 4G service, of course on Verizon.

Theoretically, yes. Jailbreaking and rooting are pretty much the same thing (they're both just essentially using an exploit to remove the restrictions placed on the phone by the carrier/manufacturer/OS developer), so iPhones and Android phones in theory should be customizable to the same degree. However, one of the reasons the Android dev community is so much more robust (and thus Android phones are considerably more customizable) is the difference between Google's attitude toward the dev community and Apple's attitude. While Google has largely taken a look-the-other-way approach (the only way in which they've really ever put their foot down is disallowing Google-branded apps from being distributed with custom ROMs, but they've never done anything about the Gapps packages that float around the internet), Apple has devoted hours upon hours of development toward addling or completely getting rid of the iPhone dev community. Although they've been unsuccessful and jailbreaking still exists, Apple's adamant anti-development, closed-source policy has turned many developers toward Android. While almost all Android phones are customizable all the way down to the system level (installing a custom ROM can completely change the user experience), iPhones are mostly just tweakable. An iPhone is always going to be an iPhone. If you like iPhones, that may not be a problem for you, but if you like being part of a community that pretty much guarantees choice, Android will always be the way to go.
im on the verge of switching from my 4s to the inc 4g lte due to the fact that i miss android. this is my 3rd time switching from the iphone to android due to the fact that i miss lte and the community :silly:
My dad just traded in 2 old iphones and got the inc4
i think he will like the switch from crapple to android.
esp once i steal and root his phone,
IMO the only thing this phone needs is an Amoled screen and it would be absolutely perfect. Battery life is excellent even in low signal areas like my home. I really don't have anything to complain about with this phone...and I'm pretty picky. I'm just not a fan of the larger screen phones...battery life suffers tremendously. My wife was playing with it all weekend, she has the iphone 4s and wants the Inc 4G immediately. And she is a die-hard iphone junky. Let's see how she feels when the iphone 5 comes out...hehe.

I don't see how that can be said. I went from a DINC 1 to the iPhone 4S and was amazed with how smooth it is. I miss Android and flashing stuff some, so I'm looking back into it a bit. Just don't understand the statements like this. The thing is stupid fast, takes some amazing pictures, and the battery life has been killer.
Not a fanboy at all, just can respect things. If the DINC 4G LTE came out before the 28th, I'd have snagged one and kept my unlimited. Now I think I'll have to buy phones outright. :crying:
If you have been sticking with iPhone or at least iPod or iPad, I strongly recommend you to move over to Android world. I had iPhone 4S before (although it's not my previous phone), it's dramatic but more fun to discover. iPhone was just too bring for me, and I didn't like jailbreaking because the system got unstable. If you like customizing stuff, I'm pretty sure you would like the phone!

Not a fanboy at all, just can respect things. If the DINC 4G LTE came out before the 28th, I'd have snagged one and kept my unlimited. Now I think I'll have to buy phones outright. :crying:

While I agree his statement was childish...
You went from the dinc 1 to the iPhone 4s... That's like going from a tube tv to a 1080 Samsung flat screen. I owned the dinc 1 before but that was like 10 tech years ago...
Comparing the latest incredible 4g to the iphone 4s would be more fair. I am stunned how far android has evolved and HTC Sense becoming an actual benefit rather than a burden.
So far the incredible has a great camera, killer OS, and is smooth as butter. I just wish manufactures really did spend more time coming out with quality 4 inchers.
HTC is the maker. Cmon google! Give them the nexus.

According to the rumor mill, Google is giving everyone the Nexus. http://www.redmondpie.com/google-wi...h-november-to-commemorate-5-years-of-android/
So HTC getting the Nexus? How is that going to work?

If I read that right it says, "Google looks to be going all-out in an attempt to appease consumers in both software and hardware, the latter of which will likely be all provided by Samsung."
I really hope those 5 devices aren't Samsung!

Ooh. Should have read the specific article I linked to before I linked you to it.
That article seems to theorize they'll all be Samsung, but most other articles I've read have said that the 5 incoming Nexus devices will come from all different manufacturers, bringing more diversity to the Nexus phone brand. Here's a better article on the same subject that lines up better with what I wanted to say: http://androidandme.com/2012/05/new...from-different-manufacturers-by-thanksgiving/
So, essentially, if the rumor is true, the major manufacturers (presumably HTC and Samsung, obviously the Google-owned Motorola; the other two depend on who they can get--I'd bet Asus will be one of them) would all contribute a phone to the Nexus brand, making Google's Nexus store kind of like a carrier of its own.
I am down for that!
Considering I'm stuck buying phones at retail I'm in for sure. Very exciting news.

Note 2 coming to Sprint: Photon owners, would you upgrade?

http://phandroid.com/2012/09/07/sprint-galaxy-note-2-confirmed/
Leaked from XDA itself, hope its true.
I wanted at least a 4.7" or 4.8" for my next device; was also thinking of trying WP8 (after 2 years and numerous Android devices).
But this 5.5" beast is way too tempting.
If it indeed comes to Sprint then it gives me a reason to stay with Sprint (& Android).
Yahoo!!
Here's the thread.
What say you, Photon owners?
Is this the device that would tempt you to upgrade?

Just hop that post right over to the Note forum! Am happy for you.
Just not in the Photon forum.
Honestly, feel you took 2 right turns, when maybe you should've took 1 left turn?
Post in the correct forum please.
MD
Well, I am a current Photon owner & user; so my thinking was along the lines of starting a discussion/feedback with/from other Photon owners who might be in a similar boat. Since the Note is not on Sprint, I figured I'd post here rather than on the AT&T Note forums.
I guess since my OP doesn't mention anything about current Photon users and/or Sprint customers, its a bit lacking.
Anyway, no big deal, we can move this or let it die out.
Thanks!
OP had everything right to post in this section. DGBH. As a current member of the MoPho community it is fine to post about other phones in the general area. I see other people do it too.

Thanks for the info. I currently have a Photon and have been hoping Sprint might get the note.
Unless we see a Motorola nexus device, and the rumor is true, the note 2 will be my next device.
I hate Samsung devices with passion. Mostly for all its constant problems carrying over device after device.

I'm in the exact same boat as OP. I was strongly considering getting a WP8 device, though afaik none have been announced for Sprint. But, the Note 2 specs sure are compelling.
Sadly, Sprint has committed itself to sell the iPhone for the next few years and won't take a shot at a fledgling OS like WP.
Even though WP8 is creating excitement among a lot of users, Sprint doesn't seem to think it will sell as many devices as the iPhone. They have a 'wait & watch' approach with regards to WP8.
And as much as I don't like it, I can't argue with the logic. The iPhone has proven to be Sprint's fastest selling device (or something to that effect).
Oh well, as long as they get the Note 2, I will be happy.
The specs are compelling especially the quad-core CPU and the 2GB ram. It makes it future-proof, well as far as it can go nowadays.
On a different 'note'; XDA has created a separate forum for the 'Note 2'.
Quad core, with old cortex A-9 cores. Looks like the number of cores is selling itself again. Not newer, power saving technology with better performance.

Well, true.
Before the release there were some rumors about the dual-core 5512 (I may not have the right number) powering the Note 2. I guess Samsung wants to keep it for the next year.
I guess Samsung's strategy is to have the same internals for their flagship Galaxy S series and the Galaxy Note series. If they release a device within a few months, and with better internal hardware than its 'main' flagship, its sales will suffer, come next year. By using the same internals, it probably also cuts down on their development time.
Since the Note has sold as much or more than flagship devices from other Android vendors, it has become Samsung's secondary flagship (so to speak). I see them carrying on this tradition of offering two phones with the same chassis (CPU/RAM) but with different bodies (4.8"/5.5").
Going with better internals on the Note would pi$$ off their GS buyers (even if they have no intention of considering a 5.5" device).
I understand their strategy, but I don't understand people, why are they donating companies with so much money for similar hardware, they already have, just slightly improved. What is better on Note 2, comparing to Note? Doubled cores (almost the same) and doubled memory. Or S2 comparing to S3? Only number of cores.
Not much real performance upgrade for everyday usage, but high price again.
But I cannot wait for comparison of performance and price of LG Optimus G with S3 or Note2.

I am sure you really hurt Sprints feelings. I have a two upgrades coming up, I will be getting a new Android and the new iPhone.
How many Photon owners would like to see similar features in the Note 2?
[1] Global SIM
[2] Kickstand
[3] Camera button
Personally I would want the Camera button the most, followed by the global SIM slot.

I really like the note 2 but my next phone will probably be the s3.
I'm trying to talk my wife into upgrading from her evo shift to the note 2 so I can play with it.
I like the photon but the video I saw made me consider buying one outright instead of waiting till next August for my upgrade. The pen is cool but being able to watch a movie and browse the net or whatever at the same time would be awesome.
I owned a Photon and because Sprint did not have good data service in my area I have decided to switch to ATT and got the Galaxy Note 1. I can tell you this, the phone is big at first but if you tell me to go back to the smaller size.... I will say forget it. This phone is good and function as a tablet itself. Performance wise, everything is good but compare to Photon's reception, and GPS performance, I would said Motorola is better. It does not mean the Note is bad... Note works well but not as good as Photon in some indoor areas. My next upgrade will be Nokia WP8, I am waiting for the next Lumia and skip the up coming one. By the end of next year the OS should get more mature, Nokia will come with new hardware, probably get edge to edge screen and better camera.

[Q] Why aren't more people buying this phone?

I get that it's not a Nexus 4 and it's around $100 more off contract. I also get that the GS3 has more brand awareness, but this is a really awesome phone. I actually think the LG skin is good and adds a lot of functionality over stock Android.
I have a GS3, Note II, iPhone 5, and Lumia 920. This is my favorite phone out of all of them. The screen, feel in the hand, speed, and software touches make it almost a perfect device. Battery life has been good and my only real complaint is that the camera could have been better.
So what's holding it back? Marketing? I know LG has stumbled in the past, but this is not one of those times. I honestly probably wouldn't have even thought to buy the phone if not for the article about Consumer Reports rating it above the iPhone 5 and GS3 in customer satisfaction. I had to see what it was about and fell in love with it right away in the store.
As it stands, I couldn't recommend this phone more highly to people on AT&T who want an Android phone. I would definitely recommend it over the GS3, and that's saying a lot. The lack of activity in these forums, along with the sparse development tells me that it's definitely not getting into enough hands, and that's unfortunate.
LG's has a rather tarnished reputation as far as smartphone is concerned, they've had long lines of disappointing and mediocre mid-tier releases over the years plus poor record of software updates. Even with a phone like OG, it's going to take awhile to reboot their image.

I've not been a great fan of LG until this phone. I briefly considered that 3d camera phone from 2011 on AT&T that LG made, but ultimately chose the SII (and I made the right choice; I was one more f-ed up phone from buying an iphone). This phone impressed me in reviews and in stores (the demos blew me away). I chose it against the SIII and the One X and other flagship phones due to it matching what I wanted. I loved most of the SIII, but I hated that it had a physical home button. The one x seemed nice, but I didn't like non expandable storage and an unremovable battery. The only thing I had against the LGOG was the battery being built in; however, everything else about it sold me. I feel that LG has finally made a phone worth it (2 phones counting the Nexus), and have the potential to beat Samsung. However, this is an uphill battle for LG. I personally have known people to pick the SIII just because Samsung is the most widely known. LG will have to fight against that in order to be purchased. Plus, people are more impressed by expensive phones, and sometimes buy the expensive ones because they assume those are the best. I really think that that, oddly enough, is also contributing to the LGOG having slightly lower sales numbers.
Tl;dr
LG has a fight with Samsung due to name recognition, and price drops may have had a negative effect. Many customers don't research phones thoroughly, and buy from a certain brand, or the expensive ones (because you get what you pay for).

I'm happy for getting the phone for only $49, but I can't grasp the reason behind the price drop. OG is their only qualified flagship in years yet they are on sale at the price point of low-end giveaways. Granted it's probably just weekend promo but still, I find it odd to lower the price to this range in a non-holiday season.

I think the reasoning behind the price drop is building for the future, if you get your best phone in as many hands possible, the people who by it recommend the brand to others and are more likely to buy lg in the future when its time to upgrade.

I know if any of my friends are looking into a new phone I will put in a good word for the OG. And that is funny because when it came out I originally looked at it and then went "Nah, I still want the One X."
By the time I was able to upgrade, the One X+ was out, at double the price of the OG and I didn't want an outdated phone. Now I'm not saying the One X isn't good, it had just already been replaced by a refresher phone.
I am soo happy with this phone.

Half of the reason I made this decision.
I had a Sony Xperia X10 with an ancient 1Ghz snapdragon and then got an Asus Transformer with a Tegra 2...
So I was impressed more by Nvidia/Tegra at the time than Qualcomm/Snapdragon (I know, completely unfair).
But I had been reading everywhere that the S4 Pro was a beast and much better than Tegra 3s.
I don't like Sense anyways and I would have had a custom ROM, so the multitasking wasn't a big deal.
We have an extra gig of RAM to play with too. :highfive:

Doubt it. If the price stays low in states, doesn't bode well with G launch in Europe, unless LG do a dual tier launch of G & G Pro at the same time, but that's a remote possibility given G is set for March release in EU region.

There's always something else around the corner. The Pro is likely months from hitting the U. S. on any carrier.
In all honesty, I'd still choose the G. I prefer the size and the 200mhz overclock would hardly be noticeable.

Speaking critically of the android community for a brief second..
As much as people criticize Apple fans for putting too much value in brand name, a lot of Android fans are really overly zealous Samsung fanboys.
I won't say it's a bad brand or that the phones they make aren't nice.. But, taking a stroll to the Android subreddit you will find a lot of rabid Samsung fanboyism.
We hear less criticism of Samsung these days because they are just that popular.. still I remember as though it were yesterday people wouldn't shut up about how cheap the phones felt, how horrible various aspects of touchwiz were..
And sadly a lot of people won't even consider the LG OG because it's not Samsung.. but, if Samsung were to incorporate some of the LGOG features people would rave over it. I can see it now... slipping the LGOG specs and skin into a Samsung shell and hearing people brag and brag and act as though it Samsung were curing cancer.
Outside of that, honestly at $350 the N4 makes a hell of a deal. Even if you had a contract but, would like to keep your service without signing up for another 2 years would be a nice option.
Besides all of that? Well your average customer is told what to buy really. Speaking as a salesman I can tell you, if you don't know what you are buying, I'll be happy to tell you. (Granted I no longer work in sales but, it was a lesson learned.)
Edit: one final thought. I don't care because I'm honestly just that happy with it..... but, we still don't have an official cm10 port and that hurts us big time.
