Wifi drains much less battery when on - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I have noticed that my when my wifi is on, phone drains much less battery. Does that just simply implies that my phone service provider sucks with bad signal quality? Or anyone have any insights on this problem?
Thanks

Not at all, and attributing wifi being on as "improving" your battery life may be a faulty assumption... your drain looks fairly good? its just the awake time that is draining it, would likely have little to no difference on if your on WiFi or not. Looks really good to me LOL I wouldn't be able to get 20 hours on a single charge the way I use mine!

Well, I beg to differ. I am on 2.3.5 and for me also the drain is significantly less if I leave the phone on wifi. I think its because when you are on the network, there is a periodic ping to the tower and also as the signal quality keeps changing depending on the load on the tower you are hooked to, it keeps downgrading/upgrading between H+ and EDGE. I may be completely wrong but I think you always save on wifi so long as we have pethatic network operators.
Thanks,
Vishal

[HELP] Random battery drain, serious problem

I've been really happy with the battery life of the s2, however every now and again the phone randomly reboots and I lose as much as 10%+ battery instantaneously.
In one instance I lost about 80% or so as soon as I took it off charge!! I'm not sure what is causing this but would be grateful if anyone knows a solution or is having the same problem.
There's a few screen shots below to highlight the problem.

I am having the same problem.
that looks bad..
have you tried something like...completely draining the batt, then while keeping the phone off, charge it back up to 100%?
Multiple battery posts on here read them .
One such is here and plenty more .

Thank-you people. I have tried a full drain once, but I may well try that again. It seems to be ok lately but I will keep an eye on it.

[Q] Quick question about my battery graph

Just curious, do the blue bars beneath the graph correlate with the time axis above it?
Would I be right in thinking that my battery life plummeted as soon as I turned off wifi?

Yes. Probably more likely to be related to screen on, and possibly mobile data. Depending on the brightness, it seems like 4-6 hours of screen on will eat the battery.
Yes it does correlate.
The thing is you just had WiFi on for some period, but you didn't do much in that specific time, it was just on. But just after you had turned it off some apps or processes kept running and you also used the device.
That graph looks pretty fine to me.
Regards.

Click to collapse
That's not true screen by itself will not eat battery so fast , review site did media playback test of SD material and battery lasted little over 9 hours.
Only combination of radio+CPU+display will get you 4 hour mark, that's worst case scenario.
Cool, thanks for the replies. Makes sense now

Funny, I always did get decent battery and never understood all the complaints. If you shut down 90% of the crap (BT, WiFi, GPS, News twice a day, weather twice a day.........) I could in theory leave the house and make it home.
My problems is I listen to radio at work!
Nice find, will give a try.
It looks like you did not use the phone much that day.
I can probably get two days or more from my Photon if I am not using it
Bu even when I am using it a lot, I get home at the end of a day (around 7:00 PM) with 60-70 percent battery life remaining. I think one of the keys is to used Sep CPU to low power when the screen is off.
good info i'll try

Possible solution for horrible battery life w/mod use (<4hrs)

I was having HORRIBLE battery life over the past 3 weeks and went through everything from running different kernels, roms, etc before just giving in. When I say horrible, I mean if i had my phone in airplane mode while listening to music at the gym (not using the display), my battery would go from 100-25 in only an hour. All the while, the phone became incredibly hot.
My solution: I finally gave in and called Verizon. I explained my phone had been overheating with light/moderate use and the lady offered me a warranty exchange. That east.
After I received my new phone I then installed 3.14 w/ s-off & CleanRom DE 1.4 (same setup I ran with the last phone) and now my battery life is MUCH better. I used it at the gym today with Pandora for about 45 min (screen off) and it only drained about 15% of the battery.
I understand the phone isnt ALWAYS the issue but if you are getting crazy heat from only running music... your phone is probably messed up.

Wakelocks (?) on Wifi

Hello everyone,
I've had my GS3 for over a month now and I can say I am quite happy with it. Battery life is rather consistent (I come from an Apple IP4).
There is something that is bugging me though. Every time I am connected to a wifi network, battery drains faster than usual. Whenever I check the battery usage, I can see that the phone wakes up for short periods of time repeatedly, mainly when I am using wifi. Here's a screenshot of it.

I am on 4.1.1. No custom ROM and/or rooted.
Hope you can help me.
Something's waking your phone regularly... not WiFi. Use BBS to monitor what is doing it.
It is likely to be an app using a network connection for data retrieval.
My guess is that an app is set to sync\download\upload when you are on WIFI only, and stuck in a loop. Install Better Battery Stats, charge your phone fully, put it on WIFI and then leave it for an hour. Then check and\or post your BBS log.
Happy hunting.
Is there a free app that i can do that with???
Thanks a lot.
Probably wlan_rx_wake wakelock
There are custom kernels for that
You know, as i said, I've only had the phone for over a month. More info on that would be greatly appreciated.
