[Q] How to backup and restore the kernel only? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an unlocked and rooted Samsung Galaxy S2. I installed MIUI and am now experimenting with different kernels.
Is there a way to backup and restore the kernel only, rather than doing a full nandroid backup and restore? I searched all over the web and all I could find was this advice to:
"just grab the boot.img and contents of /system/lib/modules from your rom zip and make your own update.zip."
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1059412.html
But I found no comment confirming it actually does work. There is a kernel flasher app that's supposed to backup and restore kernels, but it only works on the Galaxy S (not the S2).
Thoughts?
Thanks!

[Q] Restore Stock ROM (and data) with root capabilities

Hi all,
Thanks to everyone for the helpful posts. I was able to successfully run the Revolutionary tool and flash a couple ROMs, but I realized I missed some old data from my stock ROM (primarily some locked text messages). Is there a way to either 1) run a rooted ROM (i.e. Cyanogenmod) and load my backed up texts or 2) run the stock ROM as is, but with root capabilities (such as removing the Sprint bloatware)?
I am able to restore my nandroid backup with the stock ROM, and all my data is there, but I don't have the ability to remove the bloatware.
Thanks for your help!
After restoring your backup of the stock rom, download and flash Superuser from recovery. I'm not sure if different versions are for different devices. If you're unsure, the Revolutionary site has a link to the correct one. You can find all versions here: http://goo-inside.me/superuser
Once you've flashed Superuser, you can either backup your apps and data to restore on another rom with Titanium Backup (use SMS Backup and Restore for texts) or modify the stock rom to your liking.
Revolutionary gives you s-off, which allows you to flash unofficial zips (such as a custom rom with root) but does not give your stock rom root - flashing Superuser does that. This is why you don't have root access on your backup.

Thank you plainjane, this worked great for me! Thanks again!

Before I flash a custom ROM...

Is there anything I need to bear in mind? Any emmc bugs or anything which the galaxy note has?
Thanks
Just make sure:
1. Nandroid backup immediately after flashing CWM recovery
2. EFS folder backup. A few guides floating about, EFS Backup Pro will help sort it
3. Search, read instructions/faq's and follow the guides.
Some custom ROMs & kernels will back this up (and save to internal storage/sdcard) when flashed. But still suggest to do this befrore flashing anthing apart from root or CWM recovery
++ Important to keep multiple copies about, and also on your PC for safe keeping.

How to backup data and apps with stock 4.0.4 ?

Dear community,
actually I am not quite sure if i should change from stock ROM Android 4.0.4 to a custom ROM like KA10.2 Xperia [4.0.4]SSpeed or [4.0.4]MooDeD ICS 90.6. I recently updated from stock 2.3.7 to stock 4.0.4 and luckily all my apps, userdata, configuration etc. were restored perfectly (nice). I know this wont work for a custom ROM (because unlocking bootloader needs to wipe data).
Without root I am not able to use Titanium Backup and I am not sure if MyBackup is able to backup the data for all Apps? At the moment I have 152 Apps installed and for me its very important to save the gameprogress from Dead Space, Modern Combat 3, GTA III Uncut and so on.
What can I do to backup everything like in Titanium backup? I also want to backup all data from "face unlock" because I optimized it so much (with beard, without beard, with cap and without, differnt hairstyles etc.), how can I do that ?
I think your only option is adb backup then. But it's not too stable...
I just did this the other day.
I used the stock Backup & restore app. It creates .smec-fullbackup in your sdcard and can save all your apks, texts, contacts, browser, etc. The only issue I had going to KA10.2 was that it did not have the Backup & restore app. I was able to pull it from my nandroid of stock ICS. I believe it was called Backup-wizard.apk.
edit: I am unsure about the face unlock stuff. I was able to backup some apks and restore them with my save data.

OK at the moment I am sure the ROM I will chose is [4.0.4]MooDeD ICS 90.6. I created a backup with the integrated backup tool. Does anyone know if stock backup app is integrated in this ROM? Otherwise, krazyazy can you upload this .apk anyway ?^^
You can stay with stock ROM and root if you want. Flash ICS Advanced Kernel using fastboot, turn on, wait, turn off, Flash original ROM Kernel with fastboot (if you extract the kernel) or with flashtool and voilá! Root on stock!
I use stock ROM and Advanced ICS Kernel Its nice!

I think the actual issue is with unlocking the device, because the op states that they don't have root and mentions that unlocking will wipe data.

Downgrading cm9 to cm7

Hi all,
I recently upgraded my Galaxy S II from CM7.2 to CM9. However, I'm not too pleased with the performance, due to wakelocks draining the battery and inability to get a GPS fix, among other things. As such, I'd like to go back to CM7.2 and wait for CM10. I did make a backup using ClockworkMod recovery before upgrading to CM9. Looking at other threads on the topic, it would seem that I should just wipe the phone, choose the backup to restore, and restore it. However, what worries me is that when I flashed CM9, ClockworkMod itself was upgraded from 4.0.1.5 to 6.0.1.1. I seem to be able to access my backup through "restore from internal sdcard" rather than the regular "restore" menu option, but I'm worried that the backup was created with ClockworkMod 4 and I won't be able to restore it with ClockworkMod 6. Do I have reason to worry, or will restoring my backup work fine? I just don't want to brick my device.
Out of curiosity, if I restore the backup, will ClockworkMod also be downgraded to 4.0.1.5? Also, as I understand it, ClockworkMod's backup is like making a disk image that includes all your apps, preferences, and the like from when you made the backup. Is this correct?
Thanks!

Restore your nandroid backup, it will also replace your CWM recovery once you reboot.
CWM recovery is attached to your kernel
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII

(Rooted and CM11) Have I got everything ready in case I ever screw my phone up?

Hi guys,
Only recently did I recover my phone from a soft brick and since then; learning and living everything XDA and Android I decided to flash CyanogenMod on my phone. Loving it! Aside from the terrible Trebuchet launcher. I since downloaded all my apps and the like, flashed Philz recovery. Anyway, the following is everything I have backed up on my computer and all the files I have. Have I forgotten anything?
I am asking if you can actually read this and make sense of what I'm asking, do I have everything in case I end up screwing my phone I have everything needed? The user Darke5tShad0w was extremely helpful and he drilled it in my to backup the efs file for my S3 but I am unsure if I actually have backed that up, however there is an actual efs backup on my phone's internal memory in a folder named clockwork mod, I'm unsure though if I do in fact have a backup of the efs.

Sorry, I know it's difficult to read but I've tried to get all the information across and attempted to make it readible. Italics are folders while bold is like the root folder containing what I need.
Reason for all the stock files is in ever the case I need to restore to my last rendition of TouchWhiz, install Touchwhizz and reinstall the stock recovery.
Would it be worth doing a nandroid backup of my current CyanogenMod settings and what have you? Would the process be the same? In case I ever softbrick, wouldn't just using the Installer be enough.

Hello again.
If you did it all through philz like was said in the other thread and it didn't fail when you did it you should be sorted.
If you want to make doubly sure another app like ktool to create another efs backup.
Remember to keep a copy on your computer or somewhere else.
And yes it would be a good idea to do a nandroid backup now you have cm up and running.
