Im really on the verge of jumping ship to another phone say sensation or the sensation xe ,the reason is not that I don't like this evo 3d gsm,but there hasn't been an s-off or as much roms as the cdma version....I must admit I love this phone ,but without root and yes I ain't gonna do a HTC method (not willing to loose warrenty.),I can't enjoy to It's full potential.... So please fellow xda members, tell me what are the chances of the gsm evo 3d gonna get s- off ? If so will the gsm have as much roms as the cdma? Please give me Ur input whether I should jump ship or pray and wait ? But I really need cold hard facts or probability if i were to stay as the same ...

Wouldn't hold your breathe on alpharevex/unrevoked releasing s-off in place of the htc unlock method. I do associate with alpharevx/unrevoked on occasion and they are all very skilled and knowledgable.
Reasons why I don't see them releasing an s-off method to overwrite htc's unlock method:
1) HTC patched previously used exploits in their latest software version rending previously used exploits, at least for initial root access, useless
2) Requires a great deal of time and energy to exploit, reverse engineer, package together and release a new method of unlocking the device.
3) The differences between s-off and htc unlock s-on are minor. No kernel write access in standard recovery mode.
Alpharevx/unrevoked also collect your serial number and do have the ability to send this information to HTC, if they so chose. Never heard anything about them actually doing this, I'm just pointing out the obvious, both groups collect serial numbers.
4) Unrevoked was passionate their main goal was for all devices to grant the user root access if the user so wants. HTC has essentially accomplished this for this device, EVO 3D. Sure, the method is not 100% perfect, but is is incredibly better than their previously held position against.
Regarding the unlocking methods, how does the sensation differ? I'm not as familar with this device. Although the user base does seem to be quite large and their development community is not burdended with the extra 3D closed source proprietary software which has plagued the 3D community.
Hope that helps provide some information.

Hey ,those facts you stated really has given me a lot of information ...
As to your last question ,the reason I rather go with the sensation is that it has s-off and likewise u said ,a large community thus more Rom development..
Now I need to decide whether to stay as a gsm evo 3s owner or jump ships ...
So if i were to stay ,is it better to wait for the ICS update by HTC then unlock the bootloader or ..might as well do it Asap??as far as i know ,HTC method voids the warrenty..

Technically all methods void the warranty, but only the HTC method is trackable by HTC and leaves either *UNLOCKED* or *RELOCKED* at the top of the bootloader.
Not sure whether or not carriers are able to track the HTC method or how informed/update to date they are. Decision for warranty work with the carrier at their service center is probably left up to the carrier.
Personally speaking, I've never had any hardware issues where I've had to have the device repaired. Returning the device to the carrier or manufacturer has never been an issue for me, although I do try and take extra care of my devices.
HTC announced official ICS updates for the EVO 3D in early 2012 according to the tweet which linked to a fb post on their fb page a week or so ago.
Hope that helps!

As far as I can remember, when I was using a HTC incredible s I got it hanged on the HTC logo ,tried every way to unbrick it ..So I decided to send to HTC for repair ,(note :I had it rooted and with revolutionary s-off),the HTC staff said it was still on warrenty...so after 3days or so ,I received my Inc s with a report saying ,"Engineer replaced the main board " Free of charge because of warrenty...and I believe that changing a main board will cost a lot $$? Am I right ?..the point is I was pretty much surprised by the fact that the device was repaired for free even though is s-off ...
So now Im in a dillema ,not sure to wait for s-off for the evo 3d gsm...I am worried if i were to brick it unintentionally, maybe I might get it repaired FOC...on another hand, going the HTC method will definatly void the warrenty cause there is a record...So ...I really don't know ...
Thx for your tips...

So a couple days ago we found out that the HTC thunderbolt had a locked bootloader which was surprising since HTC has always been very largely supported by the community, a lot of people said it was Verizons douchbaggery. Now it appears the HTC Incredible S, the unlocked handset from HTC released in Europe also has a locked bootloader. This is extremely dissapointing.( like the droidx and atrix from moto, which still have not been cracked). The chances that this new Evo 3ds bootloader are locked, is high and frankly the only thing keeping me with HTC is the community and their support but this is a slap to the face. There hardware cpu, gpu, displays, cameras etc suck compared to Samsung or Motorola only their build quality is great. But if this new Evo is locked down I'm done with HTC!

I think this was discussed in another thread.
Yea:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1006160
Also word on the street was the G2 was supposed to be unrootable also, that didn't last too long.
This really means nothing, because as it has been in the past, so shall it be in the future. Bootloaders are just a door that many dev's are waiting to just kick in, so saying its locked means jack. They are just waiting to break it so their legend can live on.....If this keeps you from buying it, oh well. I know for a fact there will be thousands of others who will buy it, starting with me.

Yup, the shift has the same locked bootloader and signed update images that the Evo, Incredible and every other HTC phone has. On top of that the sd card was locked out from the hboot as well.

CPU gpu? Scorpion chip set over clocks easily to 2.0ghz. Screen? Qhd. Camera? HTC just went with new software programing and new optics for much better pictures. The evo 3d will be far from locked down and its a solid phone. Get the one year old nexus s then lol

Honestly, I don't think it will come as locked down as the TBolt and Inc S...but even if it does, I'm still going to buy it. The TBolt fell to perma root in, what, 4 or 5 days, if that long?
With the devs we have here, even if it does come locked down, it'll be open within a week or so. I hate to see HTC doing the Moto thing, but I'm not concerned about the future of custom ROMs/Kernels on the E3D.
If you are concerned with the current state of bootloaders locked devices, check this out:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dGxKZE14VWNvd0RBbUtNMXpJbzFUZUE6MQ
Hopefully this gains steam here at XDA.
On one hand I can understand why they might do this. I mean people are still riding with their G1s despite the fact that it is beyond outdated tech. But the dev community keeps it alive and well.
Also these companies do have a responsibility to their shareholders to say well we do lock our devices down as best we can to protect the bottom dollar (basically saying we want to force people who keep up with tech to upgrade as much as possible.
On the flipside of it all, you can clearly see how the dev community has helped HTC since their WinMo days. I know we are but a small subset of their user base, but our dollars count nonetheless. And when we let what the devs are doing influence our phone purchasing power
(which I know I do because I chose an Evo over an Epic because I felt what was going on over here was just more multi faceted (sense, AOSP, blur, and other options) than what was going on with the Epic)
But these companies KNOW what we are doing to their phones just as much as these carriers know. They don't want us to remove their bloatware because that is money. But we strive to remove it anyway and they still might not care because we still pay our monthly fees.
So I take locked bootloaders with a grain of salt. Android will ALWAYS be open and there is nothing that these companies can do to stop that. Once these companies notice the miss sales and such, then they will take a less noticable stance to it all. But in the meanwhile, I expect the Evo 3D to be cracked possibly hours after it is released.
It never takes long
(sorry for the long windness, I hardly post much)
im pretty sure the evo 3d will get cracked but my friend has a droid2 and it still hasnt been cracked after this long. its his first android phone and because i cant change the kernel for him, his out of box experience with the droid2 and his first android is a horrible experience and now he wants an iphone instead.
being a tech guy, most of my friends come to me for recommendations and never will i recommend a phone to anyone with a locked bootloader. (unless its been cracked) motorola just lost alot of business, with the release of the atrix, i tell people not to get it either.
just a few days ago, my friend from at&t was going to upgrade his phone. he had the option to choose the atrix or the htc inspire. despite the atrix having much better specs, i had to tell him to go with the inspire simply because the bootloader is not locked.

You're assuming that a JTAG footprint would be available. And sure, in most cases it is. However it's easily possible to make the non-factory CPU's just ignore it.
Besides, you're talking about permanently wiring something akin to a console modchip to the phone, which would be very impractical given how small these phones are.
And even then, they can throw down updates that would cause your phone to shut down or go into some limited use mode if the jtag port is being played with.
The xbox 360 and ps3 were suppose to be un-hackable. Everything is hackable as long as it is popular long enough. I am sure 6 months after it is released it will be rooted.

6 months is a long time for an Android phone. So if something comes along with similar specs that's easy to unlock, you might lose dev support. Also, there's nothing that says it might get unlocked. Look at the Moto phones...

I was just about to buy an Evo until I read about the Evo 3D, and so I have to suffer with my Touch Slow 2 for a little while longer...
Anyway, I don't own a Droid 2, but I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782556
So, even the Droid 2 has fallen to the root. Hopefully, Sprint and HTC won't make it quite so hard and will continue to turn mostly a blind eye a la the Evo, but either way, the Evo 3D just looks too cool to not get.
Dear Adam,
I know how important it is to have the bootloader unlocked on the EVO 3D. Thank you for registering your feedback in regards to HTC’s latest statement on bootloader policy. While the statement notes that locked bootloaders will not be occurring on future devices, the official policy is still being reviewed as it pertains to existing devices. The EVO 3D was already far into production process when this statement was released.

Who cares, HTC doesn't have ONE SINGLE employee working for the "Love of the game" XDA has all the talent!

Well that's good. But wouldn't a locked down bootloader pose many risks? I guess I'll just wait and see. I wish I can sync my wiimote to my phone.
How is this even hopeless? You do realize the statement was made after production started on EVO3d...you also understand a patch can easily reverse this...at ANY point in time???
The only thing hopeless is how you feel, not, exactly how HTC feels about unlocking the bootloader of the EVO 3d.
Just take a wait and see approach. The announcement was just that, the announcement. YMMV but in any case, it's not the end of the EVO3d's story.
There has been no evidence that HTC plans to ever unlock the EVO 3D bootloader. Our money is already in their pocket. They mentioned they would not lock future devices but people have already bought the EVO 3D. I just see them keep with these generic statements.
People act like they care so much but people have stopped posting on their facebook, they have stopped with the petitions, etc... If people decided to continue pestering them about this issue like when it was first announced that the bootloader was locked, HTC would actually listen. People stopped caring about this issue and HTC can see it.
Guy!! Finally they have released the unlocker officially...http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/..but Flyer is not yet supported I guess..

Do you enjoy spreading misinformation? How can you say something so matter of fact, when clearly you just don't know.
This unlocker is currently for Sensation and Evo 3D, however HTC has said this will become available for every device in the future, and I believe devices that were released recently.
The thing is this voids your warranty. I'd rather use unrevoked and not void my warranty.

Yeah it really is in HTC's best interest to unlock bootloaders for the devices that have been successfully rooted. If they do more people will probably try and use their method and then they will have a running tab on who unlocked. Plus with the naive people using HTC unlock they will have an out on fixing devices you messed up yourself.

Hopefully this trickles out to more devices soon, although I prefer that they not know that the bootloader is unlocked as it is possible to go back to s-on and retain your warranty.
I was wondering how sprint made the evo 3D to root, but any other devices not as hard? How come they focused mostly just on the 3D to make it impossible to root?
um it wasnt sprint. it was htc.

HTC's unlock method used on the EVO 3D has been used on all (or at least the majority) of their newer devices. the EVO 3D coincidently was one of the first HTC devices to receive HTC unlock support.
Some other HTC devices using the official unlock method off the top of my head are, Incredible S, Vivid, Rezound and Amaze ... a complete list is available at http://www.htcdev.com/ .
There isn't as large of an aftermarket push to exploit these devices since the majority of functionality exploiting would provide is already being provided officially through the Manufacturer.
Hope that helps make more sense!
Source from China local media. They said ONE S&X have eaten Jellybean and other devices with 1G ram would eat Jellybean as well, but HTC did not confirm when we will receive OTA update. The only thing we can do is waiting.......Just like the days we were waiting for ICS......
Just because we meet the technical requirements to get JB doesn't mean we will. Sprint's EOL'ed our phone, and Virgin Mobile has never cared about updates at all. So why then does HTC have any incentive to give us an update?
http://www.htc.com/www/help/android41faq/
But even if we get official update by that time when it will be released many people will probably have a different phone.
But still i hope it won't take as long as it took from GB to ICS.

Here's a quote from the link you posted:
What devices will not get Android 4.1?
We work hard to ensure each of our products has the optimal user experience and therefore some products will remain at their current version of Android. In general, devices with 512MB RAM or less will not be upgraded to Android 4.1. At present, these devices include the HTC One V and the HTC Desire C. As we identify other devices that will not be upgraded, we'll provide updated information.

There are a lot more HTC phones with 512MB or less, but those are the currently marketed models. Although the FAQ doesn't explicitly say so, I'm sure they are only intending to address phones that are still being sold by the carriers, which does not include the Evo 3D, and I doubt they would include the Evo V either.
They did say they will review their products released in 2011, which includes the Evo 3D, so I guess there is still hope but I think we have a better chance if one our devs ports a Sense 4+ Jelly Bean ROM to the Evo 3D/V.
ramjet73
Ok the Evo 3D will not receive jb, why? For the simple fact that our phones are 3d capable,, HTC will not take the time nor the resources to customize jb for 1 individual phone, it makes no financial sense, HTC is losing money. Why would you wait for HTC anyways when jb is already available for the Evo in a custom rom

Personally I am sick of sense, prefer the clean appearance of cm10 now, but that's what great about android is you can freely change your rom to your personal liking

Agreed. We wont get an official JB. Sprint EOL'D our phone (strike 1) WiMAX and 3D are dead and limited technologies now (Strikes 2 and 3)
I think their statement that 512mb RAM phones won't get it is telling. I've been running Disarmed Toast, and Anthrax'ed JB for about a month now and RAM usage seems about the same as ICS. I think the ram limit is arbitrary and more a "we won't because they are old and EOL." Its easier for folks to accept a "hardware limitation" than "its old, but can totally run it if we didn't feel it was a waste of resources"
With the "some 2011" line, I'm assuming the ones that sold well and didn't have any unique features.

dont hold your breath guy's. << penalty for stating the obvious <me>
I find it amusing how some people go:
its EOL by Sprint.
and?
what about GSM?
Its true that its a lot of effort for HTC to go through, but they could just stick two fingers up to CDMA and still produce a GSM version
Besides - if they did release one it'll probably get defunked by the carrier anyway. a bit like it took awhile to get ICS out through carriers while GSM was living the high life.
it does annoy me that people rave about one particular phone/carrier when there are other options available. I have no problem with it in the CDMA/GSM dev forums but in the general one its a bit annoying that the whole world centers around that one persons carrier/phone combination
Just because they are financially not stable and are losing people that use their products is the reason they should make an update so they can KEEP people that are still at HTC side so a good word can be said about them, for example when a friend of yours is on the market for a new phone you can easily convince them to choose HTC because of their good reputation with updates. So I still have some hope to get official JB update.
