[Q] Touchpad with android as daily? - TouchPad General

Hi guys, i am thinking about to buy me a touchpad and install android on it. Now, my concerns... is it stable enough to use it as a daily driver that way?
Mostly i am watching video and playing games on my tablet right now, and i wonder if the performance with android on touchpad is good enough for my needs?
I also need to know if it has hdmi out?
If there are any big warnings please advert me now, before i make a misstake..if it all right im getting it =)

I'm using my touchpad daily with the CM7 last released alpha build. I use it for videos, games, web browsing, etc. Android runs smooth and I have no issues at all. If you score a touchpad at the right price its an awesome device. If you want to spend more get a galaxy tab or an ipad. As for making a mistake, no one can either encourage or discourage you from that. Good luck with your decision.
Edit: No HDMI out port.

I've installed it and so far I like it... The sound is choppy and I don't know how to fix it.. However, everything else works great!! I have lots of games like plants vs zombies and it works great!! I also installed dolphin browser and works great!! I have the HTC IME mod keyboard and the landscape looks good and covering the whole screen the horizontal is half screen but works good too.. I like the Android better due to more apps and more things to put..
sent from my HTC EVO 3D using XDA Premium!!

Very few issues here as well.
Daily driver, no problem.
I play Contract Killer...and lack of real buttons (home, menu, back, etc.) sometimes gets you locked in the game...however, ending the task gets you back to where you need to be.
I love WebOS, don't get me wrong, but Android has the apps and games I like to play.

I use both CM7 and WebOS. For Flash video and Netflix I boot into WebOS. I use both WebOS and CM7 for music and CM7 for most games, transcoded video, and web blowsing. Love Dolphin HD on CM7, much better than the default browser on WebOS.
You can't go wrong for the price... the harware is very good.

I don't think Netflix works in webOS, but in CM it works great. I got mine not knowing how much I would use it, my wife likes webOS so it was mostly for her. Turns out I use it alot more than I thought I would. I use it to search the web, music, movies and games instead of my laptop most of the time now. It was well worth the purchase.

While it has some minor quirks, its plenty usable as a daily driver. The biggest issue is that the battery life in sleep mode is terrible compared to webOS. It'll get you through a full day of use with moderate usage, so its not a deal breaker.

battery in sleep makes me barf. I wake up friday morning use it a bit, go ona weekend trip and it's dead on Monday.
Meanwhile I wake up on Friday with webOS, leave for the weekend and come back to see my device at like 77%.
Is this just how Android devices are, or is it because the Touchpad still needs some tweaking? And if by tweaking you mean we can get 10-20% better battery life in idle, that's not much. Power consumption needs to be cut in like 1/5th if not 1/10th its current state in idle.

Keep in mind folks that Gingi isn't even officially released. There are a lot of development being done in the shadows. I think it will all work out in the next few months. The source for ICS is released, which does officially support tablets. I would not mind them moving to ICS and skip HC/Gingi all together.
I use Gingerbread on a daily basis. My TP is on the Touchstone 90% of the time, so I don't see the same battery issues as others.

Im looking to see some feedback from regular users who have attempted and are using the second alpha.
How usable is it really?
To be honest, webos, while is wonderful, with the lack of apps its quite not useable. i mean, i enjoy the pad, but it does not pull me to spend a lot of time with it like my smartphone did.
so.. How is android at this develoment stage?
Thanks
a few of the hardware features are better, but i stuck with A1 mainly because of the stability, and most of the problems is has can be corrected yourself using apps and doing some minor tweaks.
i did check it out, but from my own experience, A1 was better.
Currently, I spend more time in webOS because my TP is more of a toy right now. I don't need or use it for work. CM alpha for me has been rather stable, with only a minor WiFi glitch that is solved by turning off the radio, and turning it back on. All my usual apps run fine, with no more instability than on my phone. Hope this helps.
Sent from my very "non-stock" TP.
alpha 2.1 is MORE stable than alpha 1. They fixed some of the sleep issues (but it still has some) but most importantly, alpha 2 charges properly from the touchstone dock. compared to webos, alpha 1 is a tossup. the problem with webos is not the apps. The webos version that came on my touchpad wasterribly buggy alpha level software. The new version that just came out mayhelp that though. Alpha 2 inky opinion has an edge over webos (at least the version i was using) as a few of the most critical bugs are fixed. you WILL have to do some tweaking though to get it working more or less right. If you expect to throw cm7 inane have a perfect experience on first boot, your going to be dissapointed.
I haven't had any 'problems' with A2.1 - sometimes it doesn't want to resume from sleep after a long time but - whatever - it's an alpha build - the speed and usability of it far outweigh any minor problems it may still have
Haven't had to do any tweaking other than personal preferences (I use Launcher Pro instead of ADW) etc.....sync'd Titanium Backup from my phone to Dropbox and then sync'd it to my TouchPad and was able to restore all the apps/games etc from my phone.
Oh and it plays Plants vs Zombies really well too
I use alpha 2.1 as my daily driver for the touchpad. After several days with it, I nook has been given to my wife. I I have had no issues with this build and have had no problems with any apps I have placed on it. I boot into webos seldom as cm7 does everything I want to do. My latest quadrant score was 3561 running at 1.7 GHz with the governor set to performance. I would recommend this alpha to anyone who can find their way around a command line (for instillation). It can only get better from here.

make sure you use alpha 2.1 and not alpha 2a
in my experience it has been running great and has been running on my TP since release.

Do you have any issues rebooting to alpha 2? I have had to restore to alpha 1 twice in order to reboot to cm7 .
Weird thing is since my first time rebooting to web os from cm7, I could not reboot or flash alpha 1 or 2 without a boot loop.
Only thing that has worked is restoring alpha 1 ,which thankfully I had backed up, and then adding alpha 2.
HTC Vision(G2), meXdroidmod Ghost Chili AIO.
Alpha 2.1 has been nothing but stellar for me. For an Alpha build, this is amazing!
Google Docs FCs on me. Oh well! I mainly use my TP for reading books (Kobo reader does an amazing job for .epub files).
Ive not had the sleep of death yet, i just use the wall charger and charges perfectly and my battery is amazing. Nothing to complain about so far.
Alpha 2.1 is superb, a couple of apps force closing but apart from that it is awesome...
It dual boots, so you will still have WebOS, if you dislike Android on your TP - remove it...

I'd say it's very stable as a daily driver. I also get a few force closes here and there but nothing too debilitating.I've themed and downloaded multiple apps and they all breeze through pretty quickly. Emulators, YouTube HQ, Vevo HQ, all work pretty well. Ironically I had never opened my TouchPad until yesterday but the ten minutes I had to use it I hated WebOS. Seems ok but stuck and I hate the little dots when I press. Only thing I couldn't get to work was a 720p MKV on MVideoPlayer but I assume some sort of graphics drivers have yet to be ironed out and I can live without. WiFi works great and I was surprised that even the camera worked for Skype, etc. At $99 this is definitely the deal of the year for me. giving my Nook Color to my daughter.
Try mobo video player from the market. I have had very good results with various formats.BTW, the little dots on the screen in webos can be turned off in advanced settings.
Overall, cm7 a2.1 is stable and very fast. In answer to the question above on rebooting, I have not tried alpha 2. With alpha 2.1, I have never had any trouble switching between webos and cm7. Just remember to set the os you want to boot in the moboot settings when you first start up or boot and hold the volume up key to boot into webos.

Just loaded it last night finally after fighting with Win7 and drivers to get it installed, but so far its great. I am having a charging issue though, so still trying to figure that one out. The only app so far that hasn't worked is WeatherBug which I really miss, but I can live without if needed.
Can anyone tell me if the TP on CM7A2 can handle all the games on the android market? For example games from glusoft like NovaHD2.
Can it play hd videos using flash through the browser without a lot of lag(icefilms and such sites)
Im mostly going to be using it for gaming and video streaming
any help is greatly appreciated thanks.
most of those games require chainfire3D+plugins to run because they arent compatible with the stock drivers
id post the guide thread thats in rootz wiki but apparently its not allowed, but its easy enough to find, its on the 3rd or 4th page of the TP threads, called "Chainfire3D guide" or something like that

[Q] touchpad worth it?

is this device worth <200$? opinions on your device please, and also thoughts on before/after android porting!
i have the option of getting a 16 or a 32 for <200$ and am wondering if this is a piece of junk or worth getting.
or if i should just get something like a kindle fire.
uses: entertainment, ereading, videos, games, actually wtf do people use touchpads for????
ICS source is out so HE** the F*** YES it's worth it!
it was worth it b4, now I'm going to be busy.
lol
I use my touchpad for everything I need to do. The webos side has good apps for work and the cm7 side gives me netflix, games, video, photos, skype, ect... the TP is a very usefull tablet. If you get one for 200 and find you don't like it, PM me and we might be able to work something out, especially if you get the 32GB unit.

I just put CM7 Alpha 2.1 on it this weekend and it is amazing how well an Alpha is running on this thing. If you can get a 32 gig for less than $200 you aren't that far off from the fire sale price.
I have a Nook Color with CM7 as well. I think both size devices have their merits so it depends what you want to use them for.
seems like everyone loves it with the new ports!
can someone comment on how the TP improved from the original OS to the android?
more interested in the before/after thing. im figuring that if you do not mod it at all, it is truly a POS.
I actually like WebOS.
I'm in WebOS most of the time.
that might change once ICS comes over.
webOS, you will use most of the time because it's nice to be in and it's the most useful. You can get to where you need to be quick. Skype call? No problem. Email? Coming right up. And while I'm reading a Wikipedia page and Facebooking at the same time, I can buy a scooter from Amazon. Not to mention reading a magazine and downloading podcasts and listening to music. I can do every single one of those things, all at one time.
That's the point of getting a tablet, right?
That's just it. webOS puts you at the center of all the action. It's a tablet in the way it's supposed to be.
That's something no other tablet can do. Anywhere. It's unmatched. And on top of allllll that, you still have the latest version of Android. Useless?! It's the furthest thing from.
oh didnt know you can have BOTH android and webOS. weird.
why do people have gripes about webOS then?
i already have a samsung galaxy phone, so i dont want the same thing but bigger (unless i can read better on it)
Exactly.
In order to be a good operating system, everything has to come together. You cannot miss one thing. WebOS has an app store, but you won't see many big name companies (the ones that matter) developing apps for it.
The problem with A & I tabletwise is that it doesn't work that different from your phone.
Which means the productivity, is not there.
I'm in Android watching a YouTube video, but as soon as I open another webpage, the video stops.
I'm in iOS and I get an email, or I want to look up how to beat this level of Angry Birds, if I enter the Internet, bye-bye Angry Birds, I have to start all over.
Those are big problems. WebOS saved us from that.
While you can do more in webOS, the ironic thing is, there's less apps, so you can't use that fantastic multitasking on everything you would like to.
So webOS used to be on thin ice, but better apps are coming in.
Still, this is a big problem for any tablet maker. We need a system where you can just push apps to make them compatible with any tablet device, or we are going to be stuck with iOS and Android as the only operating systems there are.

If you don't mod the TouchPad, it's not truly a POS. with the original firmware, yes, it's the most laggy experience ever. But ever since the latest official firmware update, it becomes infinitely more usable.
If you apply the relevant preware patches and overclock on top of that, it becomes pretty darn snappy.
So WebOS is definitely still alive and kicking.
The latest CM Alpha is indeed impressive. But I still have trouble using it as my daily OS primarily due to the faster battery drain. But I'm sure that's just a temporary issue.
At the firesale price of $99 for a 16GB, it's a steal. I would say that it would even be worth it at $200.
But keep in mind that you're within range of getting one of these:
Kindle Fire is $199
Nook Tablet is $249
Personally, I want another one. Currently using my TP as my main computing device. Have CM installed, and barely using it, honestly.

Woth it? Well, if there will be a stable ICS port, and you understand what is a tablet and how you could use it, it's worth it, i guess. Personally, after i bought it i understood that there are quite few tasks that i could use a tablet for, so this thing just lies on my table, collecting dust.
Anyway, if you are going to buy TP NOW, better look in the Nook Tablet direction: for $250 you will have more compact tablet with better CPU/GPU and microsd slot.
I'm sitting at my laptop, but I'm using my TouchPad anyway because it's so fun to use.
I have to agree with Unrealwolf. If you have a purpose for a tablet, it is a good one for the price. It would be nice to have the SD Cord slot but the only reason I filled up my 16GB is because I put on 2GB of music and 20 full length MP4 movies.
At home I seldom use my laptop because I do all my email, social networking, and web browsing (ie. shopping, research, and forum updates) on a tablet (I have both a TP and a Nook Color). Very much worth it to me.
doh the deal got away
should i continue hunting or go for a fire/nook? not sure how well they compare but prices are close
Not too sure yet about the new nook tablet but the fire is getting some less than stellar reviews today. Seems to be a bit laggy. After using my touchpad for a while, I have a hard time going back to my nook color 7 inch screen. I am actually starting to develop apps in enyo for the touchpad. I really like webos as well as cm7. For me, the touchpad gives me the besr of both worlds.

What Are You Using It For?

Hi,
Just got a 32GB HP Touchpad. Had it charged up last night and spent a couple of hours on it. I also have a Motorola Xoom 32GB and Apple iPAD.
My first thought was immediately install CMW 7, but wanted to hold back and use WebOS for a months first.
Wanted to get everyone opinion on what they've used for so far. Are you on WebOS or you went to the immediate route of Android?
If I go end up going to CMW 7 or 9 and decided to revert back to WebOS, what is the procedure / process to bring back to stock?
Thanks,
i just got a 32GB a few days ago as well
i also have a ipad and a transformer... only reason i got the touchpad is to kinda beat on it
(use it in my car audio setup/media player for my 2 18" BTL's )
i installed android (xron cm7.1) right away as i felt webOS is just not well developed yet and the fact that i LOVE the openness of cm7 and android...
it is easy to go back to complete stock... about as hard as rooting a "new" phone (using CMD/ADB)
i recommend staying away from the android builds if you use it as a daily pad due to the bugs and wifi issues right now...
in my experience my wifi sticks and bugs are minimal but like i said... i use it to beat on and dont really care to much if it gets broken
now i plan on selling my ipad and transformer for a transformer prime in a few weeks but i am really starting to like the touch pad for its simplicity
I use it for web browsing in bed and on the couch. I stayed on webOS for a few days before giving android a try. I greatly prefer webOS for my use. CM7 is gingerbread, and I don't feel gingerbread is a good fit for a tablet. All the apps are just phone apps scaled. At least there are a few tablet apps for webOS.
My biggest reason for sticking in webOS is the cards. Its just so intuitive to multi-task, and navigate.
The next reason is the browser. The stock webOS browser is far better than any browser I have found for android. Its not perfect, but its smooth and has native good flash support. I also really like the TouchPad keyboard with the number row.
I think I will change my mind when ICS comes out for the TouchPad. I have an android phone, and love Android, but don't feel a phone OS is a good fit on a 10" screen.
Check out the forums on webosnation, formerly precentral. There is a great guide there for tweaking webOS, using preware. The add-on I use the most us the thumb controls for the browser, it means a swipe from off the left or right edge gives you back, forward, refresh etc, so I can use my TouchPad one handed most of the time.
Edit:
Another note: you don't replace webOS with Android. Its a dual-boot set up. When you power up the device you get a choice (cyboot in pre ware lets you change delay and default) of webOS or Android (or CWM). Right now there is no way to fully remove webOS. The devs have given the following reasons: most devs like webOS, and it gives you a contingency if something goes wrong, you have a stable usable OS to fall back on
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
I am not sure what someone with a Xoom and an Ipad would use the Touchpad for, but I use mine as a laptop replacement for most things. I got mine the first day of the sale so I used WebOS for a few weeks until they got android on to it. I liked webos, but it was quite obvious that it wasn't anywhere near a finished product (touch not sensitive enough, many MANY browser issues [only some of which were taken care of by purchasing advanced browser], waiting for 10+ seconds for any app to open). Still I liked its concept and it did well enough. I didn't like the lack of apps (I took the TP with the HP BT keyboard to school to take notes), but I would just used the web based version of the things I wanted to do (google docs, etc) which kinda sucked since they werent touch optimized but what can you do?
Then, when it was available, I put android on it. I used android to mess around, but still used WebOS 98% of the time since android was incredibly buggy and unusable for my purposes (plus the Gdocs app didn't work - LOL!). Things went like this for about another month and when CM7 a2.1 came out I installed it and things really started to smooth out. There were still bugs (though I never had wifi issues), but then I found the XRON flavor of CM7 and Leo's tweaks seemed to make an enormous difference in usability. I pretty much have not booted into WebOS since this time.
I use the TP for web browsing, taking notes (cant wait until HC or ICS on here so I can use the ASUS supernote app), playing games, controlling my new Onkyo Receiver, watching TED talks... The BT keyboard greatly increases its usability (for me).
Now once again, there is nothing there that you couldn't do with your existing tabs. You may consider making it a bathroom TV, or a part of your car stereo system. There was more I was going to say, but I can't really remember.

You typed ALL of that on the Galaxy S II?! Wow! Lol! You must be a professional Text'er
I think that would be one reason and potentially major reason I would hold off CM due to it being Gingerbread. I might rethink once it get ICS.
Thanks for the feedback from everyone on this.
The minute I got the HP and installed Accurweather. The first thing came to mind for me was to Velcro to the kitchen backsplash and use it as a calendar / To-do/ daily weather & news device
The only thing is trying to properly hide the charge cable.
Wasn't really sure what I would use a tablet for when I got it. We have a netbook, a home theater PC connected to the TV, a netbook for the couch, and both my wife and I have smartphones (my infuse and her iphone). To be honest, I haven't used it as much as I would like. We did take it on vacation last week and it was great on the plane for watching a movie (used mobo player) and finding things in the city. Aside from that I'll poke around on in it while watching TV if the wife is on the netbook and I don't feel like coming back here to the office to use the real PC. I have a feeling I'll be using it quite a bit at work to surf and screw off when I should be doing other things lol
I got it and immediately put CM7 alpha 2 on it. Haven't had any wifi issues, but I do have some charging issues (won't charge in CM7 if it gets below like 20 or 30% battery). I think webOS is very pretty, but it seemed very slow to me and the lack of apps just completely killed it for my use.
Trying to figure out of I want to get at BT keyboard for it still....

Most of my posts are from my Galaxy S II, I've definately typed some diatribes on this soft keyboard. The 4.3" screen is perfect for me for one handed thumb typing. Good auto correct helps.
The Touchstone may help with the kitchen placement. They are $40 shipped on amazon if you can be a little patient (the prices fluctuate daily). They look like a little easel, you set the TouchPad in, and it charges wirelessly. The TouchPad goes into Exhibition mode, to display a clock, pictures, calendar (I think), or other apps. My favorite is LCARS Clock.
It also works in Android. It enters the clock app to display the time and weather.
It will even charge if you have a case on it. You should be able to hide the cable fairly easily. Then when you want to use it, just grab and go. The Touchstone was the first accessory I bought.

This basically sums up my feelings. I've only owned my Touchpad for a week, but I find webOS does basically everything I need it to do. It's my only tablet, and I really enjoy the webOS experience.
I'll add that I was also extremely happy when I found out that Dropbox file opening and editing worked flawlessly right away.
There may be a limited number of apps, but the stock apps work really well in my opinion. Most other things that don't have apps can be found through the browser (at least for what I use). For example, a Netflix app might be nice, but Amazon Prime Instant Video works perfectly through the browser.
If there is ever a decent Android ICS release, I'll give it a shot. Until then, I'll probably stick with webOS. I already have a phone on Gingerbread.
I use mine for web browsing, email and basic document editing. Basically a laptop replacement.
When CM7 came out I was using that primarily, but as of late I've switched back to webOS. Not because I prefer it, but because Android simply cant hold a candle to webOS in terms of battery life. Most of what I do in Android can be accomplished in webOS, so while I dont like the OS as much I cant justify staying in Android for long.
If the battery life ever gets better, I'll switch back to Android. Alternatively, once ICS comes out I'll take another look since from what I've seen of it I like the ICS UI far more than webOS enough that I can overlook the battery issues.

Used WebOS for 1 day and then dual booted with the XRON ROM. I have occasional wifi issues on Android but it is stable enough to use it instead of a laptop for browsing the web, email, FB, LinkedIn, productivity apps etc. and of course games.
WebOS is nice but the selection of apps is minimal...if you don't care about that it is a nice UI. Install Preware to speed things up...

Same!
I used WebOS long enough to hit the shutdown button only. Alpha 3.5 has treated me well. I have the nes, snes, n64, psx, and gameboy emulators paired with two ps3 sixaxis controllers. This tablet runs emulators wonderfully.
Second to games I monitor my alarm system, control my googletv, adjust my home thermostats, and while not being directly used it is a battery backed up home security camera dvr via ipcam.
Thirdly I use it for book reading, netflix, rdp control of a home media server, and web browsing. The a.I.type intelligent keyboard is free on market and has a split keyboard that allows me to type faster than I could with swype.

You won't "wear out the battery" by using it!
You'll end up getting more life out of it if you "work" it all the time.
You may have issues with battery stats as android battery monitoring is very unreliable so make sure you clear them on ever ROM flash while fully charged.
I got mine a few months ago. I tried to play with WebOS and it wasn't bad but compared to Android it did suck. Long boot times aswell as loading apps.
Nice idea but android is more complete.
Currently updating with each Xron ROM and its been fine, apart from the old issue with wifi and FCs.
Currently use it for a alarm clock and browse the internet in bed.
I agree with the using WebOS for a while. It's not a bad OS. I like the cards too, but i can't say wouldn't want more icons on the dock and it would be nice to have widgets to put on the desktop behind the cards. But I'm sure when the source is released we can expect some better flavors of WebOS.
Android is fun to mess with, but it's still buggy and some features don't work well. It's not as fluid and i can't get the camera to work on mine for skype or taking pictures (with FC'ing.)
Currently I only use Android for a couple games, Google Voice SMS, ebuddy to chat, and browsing the net with Skyfire. As for WebOS, I play some WebOS-specific games, video chatting, Kalemsoft video streaming from my SMB share, ereader, and organizational things. Currently WebOS is more useful than Android by far. Other than not having a good chat program. When android isn't so buggy and is more fluid i'll give it a better shot.

About to buy hp touchpad

hi,
i am about 32gb hp touchpad for 300usd.
So my question is
1. can it run gingerbread totally stable as in for daily use.
2. what about the infamous battery drain and dead issue, does it hamper all the touchpad.
Please answer in all honesty,
Thanks
I believe cm7 was pretty darn solid for the time I used it. Although cm7 support has pretty much faded away, the current focus now is cm9 which I'm running right now. With a few wifi hiccups here and there, it runs just as well. I'd go with cm9.
I have not had the battery falter on me since moving to cm9. It used to be that it'd take forever to charge up once dead, then try to boot up and then die again (and loop), but not anymore. Battery life for me is around 8-9 hours of FULL time use, I'm talkin screen on the entire time and the whole 9 yards.

Ok, so, gingerbread isn't 100% stable, but it works just well. However, if you will download flash player on it and watch youtube through web browser, you'll get blocky videos.
If I were you, I would install ice cream sandwich (android 4.0) on it because it is much more usable in terms of browsing, watching movies and you get a real tablet experience on it.
With gingerbread you seem like you are holding a huge phone, which has no 3g...
So to be honest I would pick ice cream sandwich instead of gingerbread.
So is cm9 stable enough, i mean like for daily use. And yeah i don't want to haggle everyday searching for something which broke??
If you want something 'stable for daily use', buy something else.
You could always wait until Q2 when all these new super tablets come out.

Its an alpha so expect bugs, the biggest one for me is wifi can be buggy. But the nice thing about the Touchpad is it dual boots so you can always use WebOS.

Also, $300 seems pricey. I snagged a 16GB with case and charging dock for $220 locally. You can get 32 gb's used on eBay for under $250. Loving CM9...very, very usable for a daily driver.
CM9 Alpha 2 has been my daily driver since it was released and I haven't had any major problems.
Go with ICS. I got mine about a month ago and loaded CM7, thinking it was more stable. After the Alpha 2 release last week I decided to go to ICS/CM9, and it has been great. It really is less buggy, and as someone else said... before I felt like it was just a big phone, now it feels like a real tablet. I haven't had any issues in 3 days running ICS, and I did have some general lag/force close errors regularly with CM7.
Plus, you get WebOS too! WebOS doesn't have much in the way of apps, but the OS is beauty, it has great e-mail, web browsing is fine, the best Facebook app there is... and multi-tasking!
I just moved from CM7 A3.5 to CM9 A2 and after tinkering have almost all of the "bugs" worked out that affected me. Having said that, like the others have said, this is an Alpha build and does have some issues, but if you want a TP w/Android, I'd go the CM9 (ICS 4.0.x) route. My TP seems like a new device under CM9 and that makes me willing to work through the bugs and future updates. For the price of a TP, I think it's worth living w/the growing pains.
I have been running CM9 as a daily driver since the first (0.5) alpha. It was immediately buttery smooth, stable, and functional except hardware decoded video (HD YouTube and Netflix). Alpha 2 fixes that. The only thing left I know of is the camera doesn't work. But that's a non-issue to me.
As far as wifi. Those answers will vary. I had nothing but issues with wifi on CM7. But haven't had a single wifi issue with CM9. Literally not a single one. I think its router based more than anything else. If you get issues I think changing the wifi channel on your router will fix it. But, I'm not sure as I've never had the problem.
Like others said CM7 is just like a blown up phone. I found it unusable. I used webOS instead. webOS isn't all bad. Its intuitive, elegant, smooth and stable. Its only lacking on the app support.
It depends on your use. CM9 is definately stable enough for a daily driver for me, but when my sister asked what <$200 tablet to buy I told her to get a Kindle Fire, even though TouchPads run locally less than that for a 16 GB. Its not perfect, and the development is fast paced. I would predict anyone that knows enough to find this website would be comfortable with it on a daily basis. For the last 2-3 weeks the only time I power cycle my touchpad is to flash a new ROM. I also easily get 8ish hours of screen on, streaming movie battery life. Days and days of standby.

Well for three hundred you could just get a Tegra 2 tablet. A200, or a A500 go around two fifty

For 300$ I would spend a little more for the Acer A200 that just arrived last month. My friend bought one last week for 330$(16gb with expandable sd memory)and it has been updated to ICS. It is great for web browsing and video . No headaches with constant tweaking and updating.
BUT if you like to tweak and customize your device than I would recommend the Touchpad, since it has two operating systems and recieving lots of support from developers.
I would shop around, $300 is robbery. I am in Canada and so far this month, for family and friends, I have bought a 32gb with Touchstone, case and wireless keyboard for $250, a 32gb with Touchstone and case for $200 and a 16gb for $180.
dude bad thing is in India everything is 100 dollars more than other countries. Shame on the government for this price hikes
i would go with ICS CM9 as well. running A2 since day one of its release. no problems as daily use. surfing the web, reading, online media. all good. pretty decent battery. i charge it every 2-3 days with about 2-4 hours of use everyday. good luck on your find
Running CM7 now and want to try ICS but see several threads, which do you all recommend?
I've been running CM9 for about a week and it's been great so far. I haven't noticed any real bugs at all so far. I highly recommend it

Please help me decide...

Hey guys, so I can land an excellent condition 16gb Touchpad for $160 today if I decide to. My question is, should I?
Just some quick background, my girlfriend has the original iPad which I have access to. I have a HTC Rezound phone that I have rooted. I would most definitely be buying this to root and just have a device that is bigger than my phone when I want to watch YouTube videos, surf the net while on the couch, play some games, etc.
I see that CM7 and CM9 is compatible with the Touchpad. I also see that CM9 renders the device not fully functional (mic, camera). I honestly would rarely use the mic or camera, so it's no biggie there. My question however is how the device other than those things functions with CM9? Is it a smooth experience? Does everything else pretty much work? Will CM9 get to a point where everything works great?
I just want to see if I should buy this or another budget tablet like the Fire or any upcoming ones.
Any advice would be great, thanks!
I recommend going for it if you want a tablet. I just got mine a week ago and I dont even pick up my phone anymore. Both webOS and CM9 on the Touchpad are super smooth. Yes, the mic and camera dont work but, like you, I dont need those. Android on the Touchpad is fairly new and with all the popularity its been getting lately, the CyanogenMod team has made it official on their site so the development for it wont be done anytime soon.
As far as webOS, I love that OS as well. Its just a shame there isnt as much development for it as of right now. But the OS is going open source so hopefully that will get some development going on it. Its really nice to dual boot both operating systems though and have a choice.
I dont think you would regret it though. I bought the 32GB version though since I knew I was going to install android on it. You might want to see if others say 16GB is enough for putting Android on it.

Thanks a lot for the response! Yeah, I think I am going to pull the trigger on it.
Hmm, I didn't really think about if Android would fit on the 16gb, but I would find it hard to believe if it didn't. But you're right, can anyone else chime in about that?
Thanks!

It will for sure fit. But that leaves less room for other stuff you put on it. I currently am down to 20 gigs left out of 32. But I have game roms and game data on there too.

Go for it! You'll have a dual boot tablet. You'll find that webos is a great os. Battery life is great and you can always switch to android when needed. Even though android is Alpha now, it works great. You won't regret it.
I think 16 is plenty for my use. Like you I generally web browse, YouTube, etc. I really don't store any content on my device. I have all the apps I could want, on Android and webOS. Here is a screenshot of the storage menu - 820 MB of 1.46 GB left for apps, 7.79GB left of 10.75GB for storage. The device is partitioned when you install Android, so you do lose about 3 GB. But when do you even really get the amount advertised?

This just posted about an hour before your thread.
But edit...never mind.
Hey fellow rezounder. I had the touchpad since the firesale. Never used it really. I recently had a slow weekend so I threw cm9 on that beast. Now I use it every day. Webos is great but there just aren't any apps.
Cm9 is awesome. Everything you need is working. I even usesd titanium backup to restore all my apps from my rezound to the touchpad. I just bought the touchstone charging dock last night. I'm addicted to the touchpad again!

I'm currently running CM9 on my 16 gb Touchpad and haven't run into a shortage. Even with quite a bit of media content (Several movies, a TV series) I still have room to spare.
For your lighter usage I think you will have no problems with the 16gb version.
Get it... You get a good dual core and 1 gb ram tablet for a very cheap price. I use it more often than my brand new laptop for games, surfing, youtube, schools pdfs etc. 16 gb is big enough for tons of apps and stuff.

I concur. Heck, I torrent and then drop my stuff on my WII; right from my touchpad. Our computer (with 5 hard drives) barely gets turned on anymore.
it's a beat and does everything I want and more.

I have a 16GB touchpad, and pairing it with a bluetooth keyboard its replaced my laptop as my go-to machine while out of the house. I take all my class notes and write drafts of papers using it, and its been very solid in terms of reliability. It does sometimes reboot by itself, but I've noticed it only happens after idling for a while and never while actually using it.
Storage isnt a big issue for me, after installing Android the SD card has about 10.5GB free which is plenty as long as you dont put a lot of music or video on it.
I'd say go for it. Its an absolutely amazing tablet for the price and with a dev community that's only going to grow as CM9 gets out of alpha.
Thanks so much for all of the responses guys! I ended up pulling the trigger on a 16gb one last night for $160 from a local Craigslist deal. It came in the original box with all of the original cables and paperwork. Everything is in brand new, mint condition! I was stoked.
The guy had no clue that you could even install Android on it. He said he was getting rid of it because it didn't have "all of the good iPad apps". LOL.
Anyways, his loss, my gain. I threw CM9 on it with ease last night and let me tell you, I am super happy with the purchase! This tablet is a steal for the price I paid.
Just a quick question, on webOS can you place shortcuts and such on the homescreen? I couldn't figure out how to do it.
Thanks!

You can drag icons from the drawer to the dock. That's it, there's no "desktop" in webOS.
I like a clean desktop and getting to my apps in webos is not a problem. I do have ICS installed and like the dual boot option but WebOs is so smooth that I really prefer it.
