[Q] htc thunderbolt 4g speeds - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm running the latest version of liquid smooth on my thunderbolt and I've notice in 4g areas data speeds are really slow. I downloaded speed test and I've gotten no more than 3mbps in full coverage areas. Does anyone know why this might be happening?

which radio are you using? most people say they have the best luck with the old MR2 radio or the newest .906 radio. depending on which radio you use can affect speeds.
i personally use the .906. the 'speed test' app isn't the most accurate way to test your speed though.. i usually base it off of whatever i'm actually downloading. normally if i'm doing an HTTP based download it averages around 100Kb/s(0.8M bps) - 500Kb/s(4Mbps).... whereas if i do wired tethering to my PC it averages 700Kb/s(5.6Mbps)

Rev A or not Rev A

VZW xv6800
Loader: 2.40
Radio: 3.39.10
ROM: DCD 3.1.2
I see lots of discussion concerning GPS and Bluetooth (BTW the 3.39.10 GPS aq. speed is awesome) but not so much about Data Connection. Maybe I’m just not looking in the right place or using the right search terms.
Not sure if I’m putting this in the right forum, but this seems to be upgrade related, and quite honestly, the caliber of posts here seems a bit higher than in the general Titan forum.
Since upgrade my Data Conn speed is a whopping 150Kb/sec. Ugh. I have tried it tethered, Bluetooth, PDANet, PAN, indoors and out. Even tested IE Mobile to http://text.dslreports.com/mspeed . Never got much above 150Kb/sec. I typically got ~600Kb/sec before I upgraded my radio.
Maybe I’m having a bad air week and pushing a low DRC, I’ll continue to test, but my question is this;
For the purposes of troubleshooting/testing, how can I tell if I’m getting an EVDO Rev A connection (I know it is available here)? Is there a way to turn off Rev A and force a 1X connection or vice-versa?
Anyone else having problems with Data Conn. Speed? I use this fairly frequently and while I am just euphoric over the GPS, I may run into a serious dilemma when professional stress demands a faster connection.
You have rev A. As for the data speeds hmm- is you phone possibly set to 1X only? To check go the the phone settings menu and under the 2nd tab it says Mode of Operation, click that
Was set to hybrid.
I tried with EVDO only. 177Kb/sec
1X gave 121Kb/sec.
Have set it back to Hybrid, icon shows 'Ev', but still not sure if it is Rev A.
Signal is strong, would hate to have to roll back to stock just to test if the problem is with the Radio. What speeds are others getting with Radio 3.39.10?
Edit- What I am thinking is that I am getting a Rev A signal and maybe it is more sensitive to SNR and dropping my rate. Thus I want to turn off Rev A to test. Then again, maybe I just don't know what I am talking about.
check your EPST settings. if RevA is ENABLED, change it to DISABLED. its a misnomer.
No such entry in EPST.
Also,

Been there, done that.
Thanks for trying.
Tried both with same speeds
Just tried both settings and the speed tests had the same results.
I'm using Radio 3.39.10 and Rom3.39.10(Sprint), have the option to enable/disable Rev-A but my speed is still 419.40 kbps. no matter which settings I choose.
what location are you in?
are u sure its one of the locations that has reva?
what radio did you have before you updated to 3.39? did you let customizations run?
I upgraded for the first time about a week ago. I initially went to Radio 3.37 and ROM DCD 3.1.2 and the VZW CAB using the SD card method. Customizations ran after the DCD ROM flash. Everything works seemingly well, other than the slow Data Connection. Yesterday I flashed to the 3.39 Radio. GPS Acquisition went from 60+ sec to < 10 sec. No change on the Data Conn.
With Stock Radio I typically received at 600Kb. Now it is 150-170Kb.
I’m in the SFO bay area, but beginning to think that Rev A is a red herring. Don’t really know much about how Rev A works, but after reading a great deal about it, connecting to a Rev A equipped station should with or without a Rev A equipped mobile should not affect the connection speed adversely. One either has a strong and clear enough signal for the higher speeds or one does not. I am connecting via EVDO, just getting really slow speed for no apparent reason.
Tigueraje reports speeds of 419.40kbps with Ev or 1x. Wish I could get even that. BTW, 1x should not go that high, so was probably connecting to Ev both times. If you truly want to check your 1x speed, try a soft reset, or at least stop and start the data conn after changing.

Thanks, I'll look into that. Hope this is safe to do on a VZW phone. My PRI Version is 1.35_002 and my GPS is rockin', but I will proceed carefully.

i cant say that its safe on vzw. that post on ppcgeeks was a telus user...
sorry if i was misleading in my last post, i thought the OP was telus.
I haven’t done anything yet. After a rush to upgrade the Titan when I first got it, and many problems afterward, I have been proceeding very cautiously. I’m not confident that the PRI update will address my issue.
I just talked to a co-worker on VZW with a Treo 700wx. He is also having problems with Data Conn speed in my area. So, I think this is just coincidental to my upgrade. I will keep tabs on it, and if I can get down to Campbell this week (a verified strong Rev A area) I will test there.
Still curious about what speeds others are seeing with the 3.39 Radio. Anyone confirm Rev A (anything over 1024Kb/sec)? On VZW?
Alltel user here, just flashed to Radio 3.39 and have gotten two different download speeds of 1045.
Thanks for the info.
Just tested in San Jose, Ca (about 15 miles from Home) and got 927Kbps. Problem must be with the tower near home and coincidental to my upgrade.
927 0.204s (1024k) myvzw.com Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.11) 320x320; VZW; UTStar-XV6800; Window Mobile 6.1 Professional;
To clarify REV-0 VS REV-A
The download speeds you see when looking at EVDO will not be majorly different, it is the upload speeds that REV-A is most meant to address. REV-0 theoritical download speed is 2.4 mbps, and upload is 153.6kbps and this is shared bandwidth. REV-A is 3.5 down and 1.8mbps up. A DOM module will take from 1 to 4 T1s in and at the moment most VZW sites are running only 1 and some are running 2, so with a max BW of 1.54 mbps on a T1, you will not ever see the max download speeds of REV-A until 3 T1s or more are at the site, and like I said it is the upload that will be most different.

[Q] 3g/HSDPA

I've just got a sim only contract for my hd2 with "unlimited" internet access, and the first thing i did was check the internet speeds on winmo using :http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1 (Down: 0.119mb/s)
Then tested it using the ookla speedtest app on android (Hyperdroid, Bangsters, SuperHD2, mattc froyosense) all of them the newest build, and the highest I could get was 0.219mb/s, with a downlink of 0.19
I checked the 3g coverage in my area using the virgin media website and I've been told it's "VERY GOOD"...
Is this the speeds I'm meant to be getting? If so, it seems that I was expecting too much from my hd2 + virgin mobile combination.
Oh, one last thing, my brother with a 5800 Xpressmusic told me that he got speeds of 2.89mb/s, we're on the same virgin mobile network.
I know with Tmo I get around 2+mbs down. Just depends on your area and several other factors like network usuage in your area and so on and so on.

:O Must be the phone then, cos brother was trying it just 5 feet away from me, anyone with artemis rom in the same boat as me?
Update: Just went back to shubcraft build, and getting 0.5mb/s+ ... so, twice as much as bfr.
Oh, and forgot to mention, moved to the 2.14 radio ... Will try the other builds and see if its a build issue or a radio one.
How is that radio working for you with Shui's build?? Any probs with sound on incoming/outgoing calls?? You using PPP or RMNET?? PPP with that build I was getting high mid 2-3mbps.On this WinMo Rom I'm getting about 2mbps.

[Q] Phoenix Area 4G Problems -- 5/17

Anyone else in the Phoenix area experience major 4G issues today? I've been getting "Webpage not available" and "Unable to connect to the server" (Sync) errors all morning. Tried restarting my phone a few times, but no luck. Phone shows that it has a 4G signal, but only the Up arrow is lighting up. Just curious if anyone else is having similar problems.
*EDIT* Have also tried turning off mobile network and then back on, but still no luck.
**EDIT #2** Now switched over to 3G and 3G is working ... cant re-capture 4G signal anymore. Looks like another outage.
I only used 4g once this morning to do a speedtest and it went smooth. Other than that I'm leaving it on 3g since I don't receive 4g well in the building I work at.

When you step out to lunch, please try your 4G connection and let me know if you have any luck. I'd appreciate it.
4g is working fine for me. I can access the internet and just ran a speed test.
I'm back up and running on 4G now as well. No idea what the issue was, just glad it got resolved quickly.
What are your 4G speeds usually like? I've been running Speedtest a few times a week and I tend to hit 18Mbps for my down speed, up is usually crap and around 2.3Mbps.
What rom are running? I'm trying the new gingerbread leak but the 4g is slow as all hell...2.5 down only compared to 10-12 running on a froyo radio

Running Das BAMF Remix 1.6.3 with Adryn's 4.4.7 Kernel. I've been switching off between 4.4.7 and Imoseyon's latest kernels as well, but I tend to get a better Linpack score with 4.4.7.
4G speeds seem to be consistent on both ... havent tried the new Gingerbread leaked Radio yet.
I'm stock right now getting around 8.5 mbps down and 2.5 up

3G Speed Assistance/Hack?

Do any of the 3G Speed increase hacks (I read one that you have to add something to build.prop work for hte X2? My 3G speed honestly stinks, and i have full signal! It even stinks when im at work, which has Verizon Towers on the Building! At home i get about .33 Meg Down, .16 Meg up? Most i have seen is about 1.5 Down 2x since i had the phone.
I did this on my Nexus One and Nexus S, both on Tmobile, and It does work like a charm but I do beleive it is only for GSM devices......god i hate Verizon
I'm curious about this as well, but it seems like most of the people running 3G speed tweaks are on T-Mobile or other networks?
Also, I ran across a tutorial for pointing your 3G connection to OpenDNS servers. Has anybody here done this?

[Q] What are normal ping, down and up speeds?

I just got around to downloading the speed test app to see how fast me x2 is and after the first test here is what I got:
Ping:19ms
Down:4989kbps
Up:703kbps
Now I dont know much but something tells me that up speed is a little low.
Im on cm7 with the Mash up script and wifi on.
Will the numbers be different if Im on 3G? Are these numbers even remotely good?
Many thanks to all!!
Apps aren't always accurate. I'm not sure what you meant will it be different if I'm on 3G? Wifi and 3G will always differ, wifi is much faster depending on your provider, where 3g can lag at times
On 3g I usually hit 3d and 1 up
Where wifi I'm like 25 down 8 up out there about.
SMILE It's Not Illegal Yet
Your ping time and up/down speeds can vary even when connected to the same tower or wifi network depending the congestion at any given time on the bandwidth provider's network, among other factors.
Your seemingly low upload speed could be attributed to other devices on the wifi network using the upload bandwidth allotted by the isp at the time you performed the speed test. It may also be the case the connection supplying the wifi network is 6Mbps down/1Mbps up. Your upload and download speeds while on wifi can only be as good as the connection from the isp regardless of the settings on your device or how many other devices are on the network.
For what it's worth, I have a Verizon 3G Network Extender plugged into my wireless router, meaning that both my WiFi and the Network Extender can only supply a connection that at best is only as fast as my cable modem's connection to Comcast. Eliminating all conflicting variables (e.g. no other devices on the network when running tests), my Droid X2's 3G upload and download speeds are consistently slower than when I'm on wifi.
19ms is a pretty good ping time, btw.
Lots of useful info. Thanks guys!

I have also been curious and suspicious of my 3g data speeds. When I was stock and rooted with 2.3.4 I would get on average 20-30 kilobytes/sec in my house with a poorer signnal of -87dbm this is using speed test and checking the down up speeds with the mobile network app that puts the speeds up on the notification bar. I used that to monitor downloads and web browsing speeds which agreed well with speed test. In a good coverage area -67dbm I achieved pretty consistently 130-230 kilobytes/sec. I am now running eclipse 2.0.4 with CMDA build.prop edit to increase 3g speeds. I ve only noticed a doubling of speed when in -87dbma area nut otherwise I cannot achieve anyhigher than 300 kilobytes/sec. I wonder could my radio be weak or bad? I thought 3g speeds would but up to ~500 or greater in really good coverage areas.

I never considered radio quality when I looked at my speeds. Exactly how one would go about checking ones radio quality is far beyond me. Its definitely something worth exploring (in my opinion)
Right I would also need to test other 3g speeds on a different phone on the same networko in the same area to rule out network end probs. Plus I got my DROID x2 used so that might be it there. Also if the radio heats up from persistent use that might reduce efficiency and lower speeds.
Those are fairly decent speeds. For a mobile device, that's about what I would expect. Your ping, 19ms, means that it takes .019 second to reach from your device to the Verizon servers, then to the servers of the sites you are accessing, and then finally back to your phone. Anything less than 80ms is considered good, so you have an excellent ping.
And to clarify, your upload speed will never be as high as your download speed. It's a throttling mechanism used by all (and I do mean all) internet providers of any kind to prevent things like hogging their bandwidth with torrents and the like. It's essentially an industry standard.
