Hey guys,
Now before everyone chimes in with "Barnacle", "Wireless Tether from Google Code" or "just add a custom APN"... I have tried all of these methods including using Root Explorer and SQL Lite to edit the APNs and none of them will enable me to tether over wifi. I'm on the latest version of Ginger Blur and using the Atrix in Australia on the Telstra Next G network.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks
Krisbo
Under the .db file, ensure that where it says default, add tether after it (default, tether) make sure its the telstra line though. Thats all i did to mine from memory. Also ensure airplane mode is on

I use the WIRED tether from google code, works like a dream. Wired tether doesn't eat your battery and helps with heat since you wont be using wifi too.

No real need for wired tether as I'm wanting to tether with my iPad.

Tried this, didn't work. This is probably going to be a deal breaker for me .
Bump?
Looks like I'll be going back to the Inspire, I need to be able to tether for my iPad 2.
I am trying to tether my Droid X2's 3G to my new Galaxy Player 5.0, I have tried Barnacle and a couple other tethering apps from the market but the GP is not reading my network.
I tried searching for this but found nothing so I figured I would get the communities opinion on what the best way to do this is.
Thanks in advance!

Edit: I have noticed that Barnacle works better for me through the Droid X2, I don't know what everyone else is using, but this is what has worked the best for me.
I too am trying to tether my x2 running eclipse rom to my player with barnacle. I tried open garden bluetooth and it wouldn't work. Can you explain how to replace the thing with barnacle? Thanks!
It found my Optimus-V hotspot in a few seconds, just using the hotspot widget in Widgetsoid2. I've onlyhad the need/desire to tether once since I have wifi at home and work. Not supposed to tether with VM anyway
Ditto to the above, what works for me is using wireless hotspot app. I have my Epic 4g running a custom ROM called CleanGB http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344074 and it includes a 'custom' WireLess Hotspot that I leave running so my wife's Galaxy Player 5 can jump on my 3G/4G via WiFi. (don't get me going though on the slug and almost non-existent Sprint 4G)
Find it interesting (and frustrating) that Barnacle calls itself a ' WiFi tether' but is actually a wireless hotspot. Tether in cell phone speak has always implied a wired connection between your phone and another device. Hope those lines don't start blurring.
Best tethering (phone to computer via USB cable) IMHO is hands down PDANet from a company called June Fabrics. It works seemlessly in Windows XP and Windows 7. Even if your provider charges you to use tethering via their Android or Blackberry app, PDANet can hide the data connection.... They also make one for the Mac OSx environment I believe.

Try PDA Net for tethering. Works always! Best tether I have used, much better than the standard samsung one for me

Flash CM7 and the tethering patch. Works perfect for my DX2

OK... After sacrificing my ability to tether by moving from CM7 xronified to ICS, I have tried all kinds of combinations to tether my Epic 4G Touch to my TP on ICS (currently running CM9 alpha 2).
I came across the app foxfi in the market and it WORKS. I am still on cloud 9 at the moment, but has anyone heard anything bad about this app? It doesn't behave like open garden or wifi tether, but its freaking working. I am posting from the tethered connection right now.

What tethering app are you using?
I must be missing something, how is it possible that what version of Android your TouchPad is running effects your phones ability to be a wifi hotspot?
I have never had an issue with using the built in wifi portable hotspot in Android to tether my TouchPad. If you enabled that on your phone when you were running CM7 on your TP, how would ICS affect that.
What am I missing?

Touchpad doesn't play so nicely with all tethers. Consider yourself lucky. Alot of people dumped their TPs because they couldn't get tethering to work. It is very buggy. All 3 of my TPs don't tether at will. In the past, there have been different protocols to get each to work. My hotspot could be seen by every other device I own, but my TPs couldn't see it. There are tons of bug threads relating to wifi, but nothing really talking about tethering. I saw a few other threads in forums for phones addressing touch pad, but why not have a place in the touch pad forum to bring it all to one spot?
Now Foxfi works with all three TPs and no ceremonial switches and reboots are required to get it to go.
Mine tethers from my Atrix perfectly with the built in setting. didn't know people were dumping their tp cuz of tether.

Dumb ?
Read what was here, but question:
Do I need to root my phone? I have the HTC Incredible 2, and am not trying to root that and just trying to connect my Touchpad (wifi-only) to my phone and be able to use internet, market, etc.
What apps and instructions would I need?
I thinking only people on Sprint (or Verizon?) have that issue....I tether my tp with my Samsung captivate on ATT all the time...so does my Sister from HTC sensation on Tmobile....
@Salvation27/: u csn try this app Clockworkmode tether

As far as I know, without rooting, you will have to pay for the hotspot service by your provider in order to tether. I would say try PDAnet, but I haven't heard of anyone successfully tethering via BT.

That could be the issue too. I will test it with some of my friends phones and report back (might be a day or two). I didn't think about a possible conflict with carrier specific phones.

According to the info on the Market, Foxfi does not require rooting. But you will need to check to see if it is compatible with your phone.
I have a rooted Bionic, works really sweet with it.

I use freetether on my pre2 to tether-via-wifi with my touchpad, works great.
You're right about the bluetooth. The option is there, and I can get everything to link up, but it still doesn't seem to be actually sharing the internet connection. I thought it'd be brilliant to get bluetooth tethering going (it should use a bit less energy to tether, giving me better battery life), but it doesn't seem to work in all the testing and fiddling I've done...

I have a T-Mobile Galaxy S III running the latest CM10 nightlies. I'd like to use the hotspot to tether to my PS3 WITHOUT having to run it through a computer first. As some of you may know, this hasn't worked so well in the past. Has anybody found a way to make it work, just between the phone and the PS3?

I have rooted my Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3, mainly so I can tether. However, upon installing Wifi Tether (I tried regular as well as TrevE Mod), and entering the usual settings, I found that it does not work with this phone. Does anyone know of a way to use wifi tethering on this phone? Is TrevE going to update his app to work with the Note 3? Developers, if you are seeing this, such an app would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Wife Tether Router is working for me after rooting my note 3. Had to play around with the settings at first. Ad hoc mode works, but none of the other modes would work.

Confirmed. Wifi Tether Router works for me too. $1.95 on the Google Play store. Configure as Method 3 Ad-Hoc.
Do I have to be rooted to use this? I know it's a silly question with a yes answer but I have seen a few post with people saying they have been boot looping like crazy after a successful root with no way to fix it?

I used Chainfire's easy root method the day I got the phone and it works with no problem. Wifi Tether Router does require root, but it is confirmed working where the Trevemod that most people use does not currently work until the dev updates support.

They seem to suspect that TWRP is causing the boot loop (I haven't installed recovery yet) but I'm rooted using chainfire method and haven't had any issues with booting. But yes, rooting would be required to get around sprint's official wireless tether.

Configure according to Dev's 4.3 instructions with the following settings:
Interface - wlan0
Method 3 - HostApd (AD-HOC)

It's the fact that you have to use adhoc and not infrastructure ..... have to wait until they fix it

I bought Wifi Tether Router, and it works, but there are a few things I cannot stand about it. A security passcode cannot be set on an ad-hoc connection, so anyone can connect. Also, even after I tap disable, the ad-hoc connection is still active! New devices can still see the hotspot until I turn on my wifi and connect to a network.
Does this work with 4g as well?

Look like I'll be holding off until there's a secure connection. Can't stand open network.
It may not be wifi hotspot, but for a good workaround for now I'm using Pdanet+ on my Note 3 and Bluetooth tethering to my tablets using Pdanet Tablet. This creates a secure VPN connection to the tablet and all my streaming apps work fine on it. Haven't tested it with LTE yet but going to try that tomorrow.

Barnacle
I'm using Barnacle as well It seems to work well in ad hoc however, plugged in, it works on tether and leaves no vacant Wifi network. Seems to be a good workaround until the encrypted app is available.
I'm Sorry, I take it back. I unplugged and the whole world can still see my Business. LOL

The native hot spot works now also.
Would seem the best option to me.
The only real caveat at the moment seems to be there is no odex version so must be running a deodex rom.
Which is simple enough and an odex version should be along shortly
