Would a firmware update cause reception issues? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Had no issues from in certain parts of my house with stock Bell firmware. Flashed 2.3.5 version and now i consistently get no service several times throughout the day. I'm going to flash back, and see if it fixes itself. I'm coming from an HTC device. Do these samsungs have different radios included in the firmware if thats even possible lol?

Try flashing a different modem.

[Q] Best modem for AT&T?

Just wondering what the best modem is for ATT and some other question about modems.
Right now im running wanam lite kj1 5.6 with ICS domination theme. I have KI4 modem flashed because i was on villanrom which i might go back to because it has better battery life.
Does the modem affect the ROM in anyway? just wondering because most roms have a modem prefix to them on the development forum. or is there a certain modem better in every senario?
Thanks for your help!
I too would like to know the best modem for at&t. My current one (Current official uk unbranded) seems to completely lose signal after a phone call or just randomly, it quickly reestablishes connection but still annoying.

Have you tried Odin to push the uckj4 leak modem for the i777? All the 9100 modems I e used on my i777 turn the radio off when a voice call occurs then reconnects after call fails.

Maybe i9100 modems just dont work on i777 and vice versa. Hopefully someone could correct me but i guess its worth a try. Is it better to flash modems via odin then CMW? and another question whats the difference between a modem and a kernel? I know on some level the kernel has something to do with the firmware and the modem has to do with the baseband, but im still unsure about the difference.
Thanks again!
Also have the same problem. The 3g lost the signal randomly. my baseband is "UNKNOWN" . Any idea?

I'm assuming these guys are running real I9100s on AT&T (otherwise they're in the wrong forum) - pushing an I777 modem will likely completely break them.

I'm on baseband XXKI3, running my I9100 on AT&T... don't have any issues. No call drops, no signal drops after calls are done, etc. Works fine.

Funny - I have XXKI3 as well on AT&T and periodically I get drops and it's almost always just as syncing is initiated.
@robsw
I noticed you are located in Chicago. the problem could just be that AT&T sucks horribly in the downtown area. specifically anywhere near River North or the loop. I have tried just about every available modem and I still have data connection issues in those areas. Even friends with iPhones comain about poor data in those areas.
I use the ki1 modem on my I9100 on at&t in louisiana. Ive found this modem gives me the best signal in my area. I did use ki4 for a while but i kept getting dropped calls inside my house. Now with ki1 no more dropped calls

I live in Champaign,IL. Data drop/hang issue always there on KG2, KI3, KI4 modem. I had data issues even I have full bar of signal. But I do realize that data drop issue is location related. Every time I go to the same place, I got slow or data drop problem. Ha! maybe something isn't configure nicely between the tower and our S2.
yea, I was in Chicago this weekend, kept turning on Airplane mode and back on..
at&t is making me pretty mad.
GT-i9100
4.0.3
Baseband version
I9100XXLPH
XXLPH Kernel as well.
I am in Colorado and my service is great. I dont have much experience with the GB radios because as soon as I got the phone Iw ent to ICS and never went back
It may be worth checking the sticker under the battery to confirm the phones version. In Australia, New Zealand, Israel and some other countries they also sell the I9100T which is just the same as the international version but works better on a T model modem. There are plenty of them linked in the Aussie thread in general.

I'm in the North suburbs. This most often occurs when I'm driving. The call will drop and more often than not, when I glance down at the phone, data will be syncing.

Any Telus or Bell users?

I just received and unlocked/rooted a Virgin Mobile S2. I am wondering what modem would be best for the Telus / Bell network.
I'm used to modding Android phones but have not come across this many radios/modems for a phone before.
On Bell here. In my experience it sometimes depends on the ROM itself; sometimes a non-stock modem works better than what is packaged. Currently I'm running the latest ICS leak KPB. Perhaps experiment a little starting with one of the newer modems and determine which is better for your device, geographics, etc.

When I was on Gingerbread ROMs KI3 was the best performer by far. It's a popular choice among Bell/Virgin users who try something different.
Bell/Virgin thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193695
To be honest in my experience every modem I've used has had roughly the same speeds and signal. I'm usually on whatever comes with the ROM.

Use packet data turns off

I'm on stock Bell Canada ICS. Ever since the upgrade I have to keep turning on the Use packet Data setting once or twice a day. It just turns off and I can't access data without going into setting and manually turning it back on.
Anyone know how to get it to stay on?
Did you upgrade through kies? I've seen users have many different issues when upgrading that way.

No, it came in over the air.
RE-update again using Kies ?
It may not hurt......
It seems folks have different issues regardless of the method....and i think a re-do may solve a few using the secondary method...IMHO
Or if you have CWM just flash the Bell modem. If not, push it using Odin3.
Can I re-update without first downgrading to 2.3? If so, how would I go about down grading?
No CWM, do I need to be rooted to use ODIN? I've used it on my old phone, but not this one.
Root not needed to push modems with Odin3.
Bell CWM zip:
http://d-h.st/clP
To use with Odin3 download zip and unzip it. Use the modem.bin or the mdm.bin in the phone slot in Odin3. Nothing else should have checks in the boxes.
I too have noticed this issue since the ICS update (which sucks btw)
It seems that switching from LTE to 4g to HSPA+ is the problem, can't really say that this is the actual problem but I have noticed that every time I'm in an undecided zone, I lose all signal.
My updated from GB to ICS on the release date.
My GN was reset to original factory GB, then updated to ICS via OTA and I still get this problem, so I'm not so sure its a modem issue.
BTW, my GN was not rooted, until last night...let's see what will happen next

I'm on cm9 with the bell modem and the phone loses signal whenever it switches from hspa to lte. It also takes a couple minutes for the phone to find a lte signal. When I was on UCLE2 it found the lte signal right away and never had any hiccups so I'm guessing its the issue with the modem itself.

In my opinion, any way you look at it, its a modem issue. The new modem with the ICS update could be no improvement over the modem with the stock Gingerbread.
But now that you are rooted, maybe you will flash other roms and see if there is any improvement for you. The at&t LF6 rom and modem is very stable and most of the custom roms are built on them. Enjoy the experiment.

Samsung S3 on Three

Hello,
Anyone one got one from three.co.uk? I'm finding the software is clunky out of the box. Is that because the three ROM is rubbish?
Thanks
What part do you find clunky?

When answering a call the screen transition lags, the animation when closing and opening apps stutters.
Have you tried upgrading the firmware?
The newer ones are significantly smoother than the original stock.
If you want more "smoothness" then I'd recommend a custom aftermarket rom such as Wanamlite or Omega

When I connected it to the wireless internet for the first time it said there was a software update. But when I clicked on the update it said there wasn't one? Where do I get the update from? I've currently got 4.0.4 (API 15)

Via Kies
Samsung.com support software .

Hi,
I'm also on Three UK. Currently using Omega 9.1 (Firmware:XXBLG1, Modem:XXLFB, CSC:H3GALE4).
It functioned better than the original stock but I bought the phone 2 days after it was released in the UK so I never tried any of the stock firmware upgrades via Kies. I'd be interested to hear how you get on of you go this way. What version on you on?
Aside from using it as a phone I primarilly bought it to act as my home broadband provider on the "All-you-can-eat" data package as my landline internet connection is appalling (I live in rural Cornwall!).
So I'd also be interested if you ever experiment with different ROM/MODEMS & CSCs and what works best for you. Three in the UK are unique in that the transmit using UMTS protocol on 2100MHz frequency so I wonder if the Three specific modem which for me was originally NELE4 works better - I am thinking of re-flashing that modem but at the moment I am offshore so there's little point.

[Q] What Are My Options? - i717R stock 4.0.4 Rooted/Unlocked WindMobile

Before I get in to details about my conundrum, let me explain that I have experience with flashing all sorts of stuff with HTC phones, so lay it on me.
Now for what im running.
Rogers i717r, with rogers 4.0.4 on Wind Mobile. Voice/data works...ish
I purchased the phone from a shoddy cellphone liquidator (i know, i know, but I NEEDED a phone)
I poked around in the phone for a bit, the flash counter was at 6, and ICS blaze.zip was on the sd card.
The Baseband is Unknown.
I Have rooted it.
always shows 4 bars and wont let calls go through sometimes in 3g mode.
ive searched though this forum for a week, i see alot of back and forth.
Can i install a ICS modem on jb?
does the flash counter have a limit?
should i just stick with ICS stock and try modems?
get me running in tiptop shape, and i shall donate.

I am not on Rogers, but I think there are many that have great success with Blaze running a JB rom. Trying different modems will have no ill effects, it will either work or it wont. There are many on Rogers that carry a pocket full of modems with them and swap them out depending on the area.
As for the flash limit, if there was one, im sure I broke it long ago.

Im not on rogers either, i need this phone to function on AWS.(wind mobile)
I fiddled around with the APN, and put as one setting instead of separating Internet and mms, it tends to wake up the "4g" faster.
so yeah, i should be fine flashing cyanogen 10.0 with the blazeICS modem? to be connected to a aws network.
