can this update be captured and the signature be pulled - Sony Tablet S

I was reading in one of the threads about rooting that maybe an update that was put out could have the signature "taken" out so that a custom recovery could be loaded on the device to facilitate rooting. Any thoughts, I havent downloaded the update yet, it says once its applied it cant be removed.
Thanks

I believe that is one of the ways to exploit the system, but afaik we don't have that many devs on board the tab :/

Accidently Downloaded OTA Update

Hey everyone, new Atrix owner here.
When I saw the OTA update I got excited and downloaded it via system updates.
It has not been installed yet. Still completely original stock/locked
From what I can tell from reading posts I do not want to install this now and it keeps alerting me to install it.
How can I disable/delete this?
Also,
Can anyone direct me to the post that explains how to unlock and load it myself from a custom rom (and a recommendation for custom rom to use)?
I just read for about an hour trying to figure it out to no avail so sorry for my newb skills.
Thanks in advance.
Hi,
If you have root explorer or know adb go to /cache and delete the update files from there.
Cheers!
Completely stock at the moment. I have not done any modifications to this phone. Just bought it about a week ago.
So just trying to make sure I do this right the first time.
Tried to read the posts and made it through a 21 page forum and just got more confused haha. Way too many acronyms...
Anyways, if I just update myself from the leaked version i can go back and delete this later?
Which leak should I use is there one that is considered more stable?
There seems to be a million different ways to do 10 different things at the moment ugh..

[DEV][UPDATED] ota update.zip with root and 'rescue-backroor' builtin! [not-released]

Hi guys
Treat it as a small curiosity. Nothing special (I think? )
First custom update.zip done with Sony Tablet S
Its useless for now. We still need a lot of work.
But remember - a small step forward, small progress,
and the target will be achieved

Hi again,
Today I show you capabilities which will be easy to get,
when we will get disable-signature-check in recovery.
We can't do that for now. Method I use is 'little' more
complicated, not easy. Let's wait for ICS release,
then I'm gonna make custom update zip with root incl

I LOVE YOU FOR THIS )) Keep up the good work. Fingers crossed.

Nicely done!
Was it my PM that motivated you lol. Good stuff Condi!
Nice work!
Well done...
Don't need a complete custom ROM for now, I think that a one line script with set_perm_recursive to 777 on /system should make all the poor #10 kernel build owners very happy!
Keep, the good work thanks
This is incredible news! Bravo!
Hi my friend,
that sounds really good ... what would be the next steps?
Could you explain how you did reach this goal?
It looks very promising ...
Please keep us informed ...

Since we now have a SIGNED flashable update.zip, here is a little something I made to install busybox, su, symlinks, etc to root the unrootable kernels. The problem I am running into is signing it so it will pass the signature verification. I attached it for all to use and attempt to get it signed and runable. I only ask that you don't change anything in the flashing script untill you contact me. Thanks...

We dont have signed update.zip. Who said that its signed zip?
The script is nothing new, i had few updaters with root install,
I've got already my newest ota with root included.
Your script has bad syntax, it will not work.
If i could sign zips with sonys private key, then i would already release root tool,
And also a lot more..
As I wrote in first post, there is a lot of work to do.
Hi Condi,
could you explain a little bit more what and how you did to avoid misunderstandings?
On a first glimpse it looks like a 'faked update.zip' who gives you/us the opportunity to install additional stuff via recovery. If this would be possible, it gives us a lot of possibilities.

For now its not useful for 'end-user'. This can't be done without root already.
Everything what can be done via updater-script, can also be done in normal booted device - rooted device.
Until we could manage to modify/decrypt system.img, hidden.img - all the blocks, then its not useful.
I will wait till ICS will be released, this could be our kind of 'OTA-RootKeeper' for ICS
Then I think that I could add this future, as automatic tool in ALLinONE tool.

The zip you flashed is called update-signed.zip, leaving the illusion it's a custom signed zip...
We need to find a way to modify the recovery to bypass the signature verification. After that, no encryption necessary. As for the
syntax error, i will look at it tonight after work...

Nobody - in any forum, in any device I know - has bypassed Recovery Mode signature verification. Devs just made custom recoveries (CWM), but the default recovery needs always signed update.zips
We need a custom kernel to include custom recovery.
But to make a kernel we need SOURCES, which we do not have.
Maybe Sony will release ICS souces.
With Honeycomb there were some restrictions...and even Google haven't released sources for Honeycomb, but I hope it will be different for ICS...
@sebarkh
Some hints.
Here you can see that the stock 3e recovery can be modded to disable the sign check.

That's exactly it. There have been devices that have bypassed the signature verification using 3e recovery without using cwm... Which was the base for the custom recovery i was working on till i got locked out because of kennel 10. I'm not a noob here guys...
With the sgs4g, we had the same issue with sources, kernel, recovery, signature verification, etc. but we had more dev's which made things move along faster.
We need the recovery binary (which i have), root, and the true location of the stock recovery (tried bypassing and using the typical directory) and it will be done. (Hell, I've already got it somewhat working.) Then we can create a zip based cwm that you keep on your sdcard.

you wrote you have the recovery binary.
have you dumped somehow from the tablet or it is from other device?

I meant Original recovery... You are linking to MODIFIED recovery...
With original recovery you will never be able to install anything without a key to sign it.
THX for links!!!
So .. if we have sources maybe somebody who "knows how" could build a kernel? Are there some problems with it? Or maybe nobody knows how

[Q] OTA after unlock???

i read this:
Once you unlocked the prime and installed CWM, do NOT try to install a super blob from ASUS
BUT Can i do update (OTA) with new software from asus with unlocked bootloader?Does that bricks asus?

NOOOOOOOOOO! Don't install an OTA or try to manually update with a blob - you will DEFINITELY hard brick your Prime. If you want to keep the OTAs don't unlock. Having said that the devs are all very quick at updating their roms when a new OTA comes out. I currently am on Virtuous Prime and it was updated to .21 within 24 hours of Asus releasing it. Same deal with .15.

I am only rooted now, not unlocked.
I know that with root i can do OTA, i want to know this.
Thanks for quick answer.
just backup before modifying/deleting/uninstalling anything else, and restore before running update process, or OTA will fail.

How did we establish that the blob method will brick your prime after unlocking? I ask because I have done it multiple times with no adverse effects so far. And from a Linux stand point....it makes no sense why there would be any risk.....

This is purely a guess but I think people believe that installing a stock blob will tamper with the bootloader or cause the bootloader to "check" for custom firmware.

Unfortunately, this has been found out the hard way. This forum is littered with examples who have tried to install an Asus update and have hard bricked their TFP. My understanding (which might be wrong ) is that the unlock program installs an token on the bootloader. The token is wiped when the Asus update is applied, which screws the bootloader if you have CWM installed. See post #193 onwards for a discussion by people who actually know what they are talking about:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514088&page=20
That really did not offer much after reading through it - I actually got hung up and had to reference that thread couple days ago and it saved me
Once you have a custom recovery (CWM) do not try the SD Card update method that Asus outlines on their website. Just a heads up. You will continually boot into CWM and be stuck there. I had to dd zeros into the staging partition before I could boot properly.
Now as for the talk about the bootloader being touched by the blob method....I call BS....the bootloader is the equivalent of the BIOS on a PC, and the blob is only flashing stuff higher level than that (boot/kernel, and system partitions afaik)
If someone has good information contrary to what I am saying I am all ears and willing to learn but so far I am seeing stuff that is absolutely wrong per my own experiences thus far.

So you are telling us that you are unlocked and you have flashed an Asus blob without problems? If so, great news - I suggest you report it on the unbricking thread. If not, why don't you give it a whirl and tell us all how it goes

I have. I have flashed a blob over stock recovery and over CWM, survived everything so far.....of course - why Asus made this tablet so retarded in the bootloader department is beyond me, I really love how HTC does it with HBOOT. I have also flashed blob, then CWM, then done stuff, then blobbed and also ok

help with ota after root
I used sparky's root method and everything seemed fine, until I got the ota update notice. from then on i couldn't download or update any app from the market. figured the update was blocking it so tried the update, but it failed, saying kernel image was damaged, and user reset was required, So i rebooted and did the reset. After the reset I tried the ota update again, no go. also still can't download anything from market. I then tried to do recovery and it failed. Please help!!! I'm on ICS .15

Can I install CMW or root .21 by using Blob Tools (Unpack/Repack)?

Have anyone tried to install the CMW or root the Transformer Prime by using Blob Tools?
Here are the steps that may be used:
1/ Download the latest build from Asus like WW_epaduser9_4_2_21_updatelauncher.zip
2/ Extract zip file to get the blob then using the tools from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068548 to unpack it.
3/ Replace the blob.SOS (recovery.img) with the ClockWorkMod recovery v5.8.1.8.img or ClockWorkMod recovery v5.8.2.0.img
4/ Repack the blob then flash SKU and Update version of SOP manually.
Please share your experience if you have tried this way.
If possible I think we are able to put su into the Blob.APP (System.img) to root the .21.
I am no expert in this, but must the update not be right signed with locked bootloader?
If it isnt the Prime refuses to update.
Cause some people have tried to flash kernel this way and the Prime refused to update.
Dont get me wrong.
I dont say that it isnt possibel somehow, but as I said befor. " I am no expert in this. "

I agree, this would most likely fail the validation check done by the tablet and not allow it to update. The only way this would be possible would be for somebody to leak the key that is used to encrypt the updates by ASUS and we would then be able to sign anything we wanted (including other ROMS) and have it update successfully without unlocking the device.
If this was possible, it would have been easy enough to just modify a value in one of the files and use the same root method that I created for the first ICS release.

Thanks guys. I am still working to find away for rooting .21.

Would really like to know how to root my Samsung Galaxy Appeal SGH-i827.
The following guide does not work

Nor does Universal Gingerbread Root & Unroot 2.3.3 -> 2.3.7+
I have tried several other that require command inputs via the command prompt on my PC which for some reason do not work either.
This is driving my absolutely nuts.
Any help would be appreciated
P.S bare in mind i have downloaded and tried nearly 20 root packages and all returned this error

I stopped at that point.... sounds like a scam.
If you're desperate you might leave a secondary email (that you set up for spam) and see if there's anything there.
Please report back any progress.
