Internal storage - Motorola Photon 4G

I'm just curious. Picked up the Photon today which is advertised as having 16gb of internal storage, but mine reads 8.92gb internal. Am I missing something???

Yeah it does have 16gb internal. 8 partitioned for phone/rom and the rest for whatever (pics, downloads, videos etc)

Partition map (ignore the 14.9 for my sd card)

With the proper recovery, I believe you can repartition the internal storage, but I am waiting on a proper unlocked bootloader.
I for one would like to get rid of the webtop and add that the space to the internal sd card partition.

Me too. Hopefully one comes out soon. I remember for my rooted nook coloe they were able to reparation the memory.

I have a maybe noobish question for you guys, how do guys move your apps and data and such to the sdcard-ext cause my internal sdcard is full and phone memory is pretty close to full but my 32gb sdcard barely has anything on it. In the settings you only have the choice to put it to phone or media area...

I worked on getting firerats mods going, and it's possible to do but we need a custom bootimg made to accept a few extra parameters to read a text file for the new partition layout. I don't have a 64 bit capable box so no buildz for me

this was an extremely stupid response...not only was it ignorant,it WASNT even "being a smartass" as this is the Q&A section.

The internal memory you're speaking of is the internal storage, of which we have about 14gigs to play with in total. This memory is formatted with the FAT32 filesystem, a filesystem which is often prone to allocation table corruption. This can lead to a filesystem reporting it's free space incorrectly.
The solution would be to backup any data on the internal storage to a known safe source (say to your PC temporarily) and then format the internal storage, which can easily be done from the phone's settings menu. Afterwards, copy all of the saved data back.
If the problem persists after this, then you will have to go on an errant file hunt, because files can also become corrupted individually and misreport their size. Such a file if found should be deleted.
Hope that was clear. Best of luck!
Just a thought....how many nandroid back ups have you saved and still have on your internal sd?

Are sure it's not the phone memory where the apps are stored. Because some people who use a lag fix like oclf don't realize it could take up to half of phone internal storage.

Thx For the input...I just did a factory reset through the dialer. Quick and painless.
Construction thumbs and swype don't mix!
only 2 gigs of space is dedicated to apps. remember our phones have a 16 gig internal sd card. and 2 gigs of rom if im not mistaken. since its an internal sd card that means apps are installed to the phones memory, not the internal sd card.

[Q] Galaxy S II Storage Partitions: Can They Be Changed?

My GS2 came with 1.97GB of "System Storage" and 11.5 GB of "USB Storage"
I don't know if that's how everyone's has been set up, but I find that 1.97 GB to be a little too small, and would love to merge it and the rest of the USB Storage so that I just have two storage areas. The 1.97, at the moment, is where all applications are default installed, and the 11.5GB is where music and videos that I copy over through Kies goes.
Is there anyway to merge the two so I'm not so limited with the 1.97?
Thanks!
1.97 GB is way more than anyone should need for internal. My Evo has ~320MB left and that's about as good as it gets, with my 8GB SD card for music and whatnot.
But yes there should also be a way to change the partition sizes. Or just use A2SD to move all the apps you need to your SD card and that could help, but also sacrifices speed of the apps.

Oh, I didn't know this was the wrong forum to post in, I just had a question, so I went to the Q and A forum. Sorry if it should have been somewhere else. I'm just looking for a way to merge the two internal storages.
If you'll let me know where I should ask this question, I'll ask it there instead.
Thanks

Storage memory issues.

I recently brought an s2 without knowing about the 2gig internal mem and 11 gig usb storage which is a disappointing thing as most of the apps or games get installed on 2gig phone mem and cannot be moved. This makes the other 11gig useless except for storing other data. I also have 16gig external sd card which i purchased separately but it is also useless except that the cam pics location can be changed to it.
Is there anyway to resolve this and make sure that the apps or games get installed on either external sd card or the usbstorage..over a period of time i guess that the 2gig phone memory will be full and the phone becomes slow...can anyone pls suggest me..

Move your apps to the sd card. No other phones can help you. You purchased the best one imo.

I do move the apps to the SD card, But whats the use of the 11 gig internal usb storage memory? Assume that i don't have an SD card then how? Down the lane after i install the apps or games my phone or device memory(2Gig) on to which the apps get installed by default will be full and might run in to some issues? Isn't there anyway to make the apps get installed on to SD card or internal usb storage memory(11 Gig) while installing itself?
Internal storage = 2 gb = it`s the default install path for apps
Sdcard = 11 gb = it` s the internal built in "external" sd card. If You use app2sd that's the external sd card for android.
External_sdcard = 2nd external sd card (up to 32gb) = ONLY GOOD FOR MASS STORAGE (vids, pics, docs etc)
Thats it. You cant change this fact since android is not made to handle a 2nd ext sd as system drive......

There is a way to set the sd as default install. I read it somewhere. It is involves some programs and basic commands in windows. But save yourself the trouble and get app2sd App.

Hey troed,
Thanks for the brief explanation, even i know that the 2nd external SD cannot be used as the system drive, I store all my Docs, Pics, Vids and stuff on it....
But is there any way to make the apps installed on Sdcard = 11 gb = it` s the internal built in "external" sd card?
when we download the apps they by default gets installed on to Internal storage = 2 gb = it`s the default install path for apps.
Is there any way to make the sd card the default one for installation of apps?
Also we will not be able to move all apps to the external sdcard, only few of them give the option of moving them to sdcard even if we use apps2sd...
All i'm trying to figure out is that is there any way to leave the internal storage as it is and install or move the apps to sdcard or external sdcard because over a period of time i fear that the my phone internal 2gig memory might get full and i may run in to problems like phone hanging and out of memory issues for most of the operations....
Applications/games with large amount of data usually stores the majority of their data on the SD-card (the 11GB partition in SGS2), this includes e g Gameloft games, and navigation systems, so it is not easy to fill up 2GB even without use of apps2SD or similar solutions.
I have a lot of apps and games on my SGS2, and I have used 650MB so far, so it is still 2/3 left, if I reach 2GB then I really need to clean up anyway...
HTC desire had about 100MB left for apps, that was a huge problem, but on SGS2 with 20 times more space I don't think you should be too worried.

SD ext necesary?

HI all ! I just got my new phone and I used to have the SD-ext partition in my HTC desire. I want to know if there is any kind of similar setup for this phone or if its necessary...
Thanks in advance !
Anyone?
Well are you going to use the multiple gigs they give you for apps? The reason for sd-ext on other phones was because they didn't provide enough space for apps I think.

Necessary?
No.
Awesome bonus though.
My sprint sgs3 has 16G internal storage (phone calls this the sdcard)
I have a 32G sandisk micro and the phone paths this as /mnt/extSdCard
I have 7 episodes from Google TV (movies) and 87 albums from Google music on the external and space to spare.
The best part is the internal memory of the phone (system and sdcard) have PLENTY of space available to download anything I want and what I plan to keep long term, I move to my external.

[Q] How to get benefit of external storage?

Rezound running NilsP ROM (Sense 3.6) and 16G external card.
Phone has a lot of internal space taken up by some backup files, pics and videos (in dcim folder). External card only had about 2.5-3Gb space taken.
Went you a street festival and took some videos. Got to a point where phone indicated storage was full. Tried moving some files to external but phone still seems to think max storage is limited to 10Gb.
Seems the phone thinks whatever is on ext-sd is part of storage limit and is limited to 10Gb.
Am I missing something? What's the value of having a 16 or 32Gb external card if the limit restricts the actual usable storage?

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I did a complete power down. I also thought that might help the OS recognize the file moves. No go.
It seems to me the system is including the symlink, or however ext-sd is mapped to sdcard, in what the system thinks it's limited to with no external card.
Is this a side-effect of the direction Android is going (without external cards as part of native support, a la Nexus)?

I think it is something funky with your phone. Mine uses all the memory. I currently have 9 gig filled on each internal and external.
Two questions:
Are you saying your internal has 9 gig and your external (ext-sd) card has 9 gig of other files? Not saying I don't believe you, just wanting to confirm I'm reading your response correctly.
Other question - are you using NilsP's ICS ROM? If you're not, I'd be interested in what you are using, stock or otherwise, and if it's ICS or GB.
Thanks again for your replies.

Check for a folder called .Trash1000 or something similar to that. If its there, delete it and it should clear up a lot of space on your SD.

Yes, using about 9 gig on each.
Currently running Ineff Dues, but I've also used NilsP's ICS and had no problem.
Try what Obat suggested above. That folder is a hidden folder and may not show up in all file explorers.
I've seen the .Trash folders before on some SD cards (wife has a Mac laptop).
I'm using several file managers and have never seen that on my phone's micro-SDs.
Appreciate the replies, guys. At this point, I think I'll wipe and install again.
I'll post again after that with my results/experience.
Thanks.

Probably way late on this, but I only see it when I'm using Linux and I choose to show hidden files.
You sure you actually moved the files from internal to external or did you copy them and leave a copy on both the internal and external...
Make sure you actually deleted the files after the move so you don't have two copies. I use es file explorer and you have to go in the settings and change it to show hidden files (files with a . in front of them) to see the .trash folder.

Just a follow-up as I promised:
I was using a 16gig card for almost a year, had a 32gig available and wanted to do a few things to update my phone (ICS 3.x to ICS 4.x; NilsP's Sense 3.6 to his Sense 4.0 ROM; cleanup the memory card space, etc.).
My suspicion is that the external card had some corruption (or perhaps it was system-related).
Since I made several changes, I'm not sure at the moment what the culprit was, but things seem to be operating properly and (best I can tell) I have access to ~10gig for internal SD (SDCARD) and ~32gig for the external micro-SD (SDCARD2).
Appreciate everyone's concern and suggestions for help.
