I know the new device is still very new. Although, I'm disappointed with lack of rooting now, I'm still in favor of this over Kindle Fire for a tablet in this price range. Another disappointment is no doubt the internal storage lock, forcing users to sideload only 1GB without additional SD card. Here's a few questions for those of you that have the device and been playing with it.
1) has anyone sideload VTC's stream app? I like to be able to stream video and music to tablet
2) where is this rumor PagePerfect [improved stock] pdf reader? I was at the store briefly on Thur and I can't find this app installed??? is this a vaporware BN hasn't push out? I prefer reading pdf over epub, i can't stand reflowable text that kills design.
3) anyone think we can hope NT can run latest Android v4, if rooted [a big if right now]?
Wait for NookTab to get root then buy. Nook Color took a while before magic happen. NookTab just came out today. Give it a couple weeks top. There are plenty of smart people here.

I second this. As is it's a great tablet, but wait a few weeks for root. I think it'll happen before that though. No evidence to back this up. Just opinion.

I returned mine and picked up a tab 7.0 plus. I have another nook tablet in the house so I will check in to see how development is going, but if you can swing it, the Samsung is worth the extra cost IMO

I was planing to return my NT too. I just ordered the tab 7 plus but my daughter thinks she will keep the Nook. I suggested that she look at the old tab 7 as it is a full hardware featured and rooted tab for under 300.

I am literally sitting at my computer, trying to decide whether to take back my NT and maybe get a Tab 7, or even hold on to my DS7 until a good AND affordable 7" tablet comes out. But the NT is sitting on the table, looking at me, tempting me to open it.
Here's what I'm thinking...
1. The Tab 7 is still too expensive at this point. I've seen some online for around $300 but most are still in the $400 range. Yes, I could get it cheaper by getting it from one of the phone carriers but I don't like being locked into a 2 yr. plan, especially the way tech is changing so fast. Since I don't use stuff like cameras and GPS on my current DS7, I'm not sure the $150 difference is worth it.
2. I'm thinking about just staying with my current DS7 but there is no comparison between screens and battery life with the NT, which I found out are major considerations when it comes to tablets. The NT is (somewhat) lacking in apps compared to my full-blown DS7 tablet, but it's all about the important hardware, in my case, screen and battery life.
3. I've been playing with my wife's NT this weekend and once I found I was able to sideload apks from various Android sites, I've got hers pretty much set up the way she likes. One of the biggest problems with the NT is the lack of B&N apps. With Go Launcher and downloading apps from Onlyandroid.com, which has pretty much everything I've previously downloaded from Android Market, it's as useful as the DS7. All this and it's only been out a few days so you can only imagine what the techies are going to be able to do with the NT in a few months.
I took the bait and bought a NT earlier. I started to sideload some apps and to my surprise, I'm liking it. The only annoyance is the default interface, and once this is rooted [keeping fingers crossed], the sky is the limit I think.
IMHO, the hardware upgrade from NC makes NT much more usable.

It's $150 more and at a point where quad core, higher res 7-8" tabs are just around the corner. If I'm going to spend $400, I'd rather wait 2 months for a killer one at the start of a new generation.
If the Nook Tablet gets root and a stable ICS ROM, then it's a warranted, no question impluse buy. With this HW, it'd run ICS perfectly and the lack of physical buttons would work perfectly.

True quad cores are right around the corner, but I bet you it will be at least 6-8 months before a 7" quad-core is even ANNOUNCED, yet alone released. Most people buying the NT want a smaller device anyways, so if they really want a fully functional 7" the galaxy tab is probably the best out there, and will be for a while (at least until the 7.7)
FYI, best buy is allowing returns until January 24th because of the holidays, so you can try a tab 7 plus for two months, and if you like it keep it, or sell it if something better comes out (out the NT gets rooted)

And another thing worth noting, because of the extended return policy, consider it a price guarantee too. If the Tab 7+ drops in price in the next 2 months, just go complain and I'm sure BB will give you the difference, or you could just return it and rebuy it.

I 100% agree. I tried the NC and didn't like it because it was too slow and the speaker was horrible. Like you, the more I'm using it, the more I'm liking it.

Unfortunately quad cores only has marketing valie at the moment. most apps are still single threaded and taking advantage of multiple cores is not an easy programming task

You didn't say what bothered you about the Kindle Fire, or that's what I'd suggest. If you spend more then you're getting into devices that were intended to be tablets in the first place, and the whole set of arguments changes.

This is untrue.
For holiday 2010, BestBuy's Holiday Return Policy didn't cover computers and tablets.

Anyone considering exchanging the Gtab for the Asus TF due to its getting 3.2 already? I have 9 days left in buyers remorse and am considering doing just that. I have tried the Gtab and the TF side by side and the TF seemed to be a bit faster and smoother. The Gtab drew me in with its screen and thinness. I also speculated that the update to come out on 8/3/11 would be 3.2 but find out it is not and with Samsungs past history of not supporting its devices (I own a Vibrant and know first hand how they operate)I am concerned that the device would be stuck on 3.1 for months and months and months and months. Not knocking the Gtab it is a fantastic device just seems that Asus has proved they are dedicated to getting the latest updates out to their devices. Anyone else having any of these thoughts?

the galaxy tab will get these features. I suppose the question to ask yourself is: Is the need for these features greater than the need for the better screen and slimness?
I just traded in my Transformer, and I'll say this. The Transformer has an issue handling flash in browser. I would crash as soon as an in video ad would pop the browser would just stop running flash. It would require a reboot to get it back to good.
Also, the tab has a tendency to slow over time I would have to reboot the tab about once every couple hours because it would gradually start to slow to the point where it was unusable.
Again, I liked my Transformer, but the build quality and stability of the Gtab is quite nice.

Good points!! I guess I am just reacting to some of the posts I have read in the TF forum. The majority seem to be declaring that everything is just smoother and faster. Browser no longer has any white spaces while scrolling. Course that could be the placebo effect. I am going to wait until 8/3 and see what samsung comes out with.
Nope. Simply because of built quality and handling of some of the files. Eventually SGT will get the 3.2 update sooner or later. If not then we consumer will definitely teach them a lesson in future.

Also, keep in mind that Samsung has only been lagging a few weeks behind others on Android OS updates despite having released the tablet MONTHS after others.
I think Google is pushing update latency limits down to the Honeycomb vendors.
Or 3.2 could be the beginning of the end - Huawei being allowed to release a Honeycomb device despite their HORRIFIC software track record is a bad sign. If you think Samsung is bad/slow you have never owned a Huawei Android device... The S7 was a bugridden Eclair deployment and the Froyo update that USA customers never officially saw was also buggy (significantly less so, but still bad). Same with their S7 Slim.
I have both the Tab 10.1 and the TF. The TF is a great machine and Asus is very good about getting updates out quickly. It is a tough decision.

I had them both also and took them both back and then saw 100.00 coupon from Staples and bought the Gtab again I really liked the ASus and it is a very difficult decision for me. If I thought that Samsung could be trusted to push 3.2 update in the very near future I would stay with the Gtab. I still have a Vibrant and the memory is still fresh how they lied and delayed and did virtually nothing to push out updates.Asus seems to be dedicated to pushing out the updates as soon as they come out. Of course that could change too.lol

I just did the update to 3.2 today on the TF. So far Samsung hasn't had any updates. I love the available ports and the memory card on the TF.
I couldn't find a Tab in stock to use the $100 off coupon. That coupon really sent the sales through the roof for all of the android tablets. I called all of the Staples within a 3 hour drive of me and none had any android tablets in stock.

Samsung is not the one to blame for the most part on updates coming out for devices, your version of the Galaxy S phone is restricted by carrier on updates (as I experience from ATT with the Captivate). But if you look at the Galaxy S (and Galaxy S II), the Euro version (no carrier restrictions) seems to get updates every other week once they release the first firmware build for that phone.
The Tab will have 3.2 eventually, they just need to get TW released first before 3.2 comes. IMO, I wouldn't let that be a deciding factor on returning...
I also have both devices. I plan to keep my TF only because I have the dock for it. The Samsung just seems to "feel good in the hands" We will just have to see what Sammy does with updates on this. I have a feeling that they will be quite sluggish due to TW being on top if HC.

I had just the opposite experience. I went to Staples two days after the $100 off coupon was announced, and when I went to the store they said they had gotten the SGT in three days ago and I was the first one to buy one. They said their tablets (all brands) were selling slowly, and, in fact, people were returning them because they mistakenly thought they operated just like their laptops -- minus the keyboards.
Anyway, I am very happy with my SGT, and feel it is the best Android tablet made. My friend who owns a Xoom acts a little jealous when I bring my SGT into his office. Yeah, he may have a micro SD card slot, but I just bought a USB adapter which will serve me fine. When I get Touchwiz, I will watch my friend turn green with envy.

Updates are just like Christmas. Once you realize its coming, you look at your device as outdated. You star thinking, i need that update because my device is inferior until it gets it. Other devices are getting it and im still here without it. Maybe I made the wrong choice? I should have gotten that other device?
Well, im here to tell you its not all about updates. Especilly with tablets as most are plain jane Honeycomb 3.1. I went through 4 Asus Tablets before I decided it was enough of a notice to try something else. So I got one Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and i am still using that same Galaxy Tab. That gpes along way in assuring i have the right tablet. I only hear about SGT users returning because of update envy or that they feel its too thin and therefore breakable.
I returned by TF #1 and #2 because of random reboots and bad screen bleeds. The screen bleed went deep enough into the screen it affected video playback. #3 got stuck on boot screen because of fat fingers on power/up volume. I would have issues getting it to turn on. I would short press, long press, quick press, repeat press, and so on. But it ended up in a mode where it would not go past the Asus screen, nor would it stay powered off. It would just keep rebooting. #4 out of the box would not lock and read the SD card.
I was told in the Best Buy store they have not had issues with the Asus. But they didnt get it in the stores until very recently. I heard the June production had a low QA and July was much better. Unfortunately birth dates arent something retailers track. Lol Plus they or the consumer should not have to buy or exchange 4 devices to get 1 good one. So moral of the story fast updates wont make up for 4 exchanges in my book. The updates are for software fixes, which one can normally live with or attribute to the OS itself. An issue even found in the industey leader iPAD2.
Lastly, i love how those who get new updates and post how, after 20 minutes of use, is "faster and smoother. " um, you just rebooted a device have only had a hand full of apps. Of coarse your device is faster, for now! Lol not that updates dont improve certain tasks and apps. But everyone always takes that as a bummer when they dont get the update. They start focusing on ANY lag or defect they see instead of just using it for what they bought it for.
Touchwiz is going to bring so many finishing touches to the GT, iPAD users are going to be a little jealous. 3.2 will be a non event to us because of all the workflow filler functions we get from the TW update. Hold on to your Tab. Try the update first and see what you think. If you can swing it buy a TF and try the 3.2 update. See what you think. Or simply try a display model that has been updated. But i would not get worked up over other manufacturers getting updates. Given you are on a wifi only model, there isnt a telecom having to test and update their apps and radios. So its just the manufacturer and the wifi radio.

Very well said. I will also add this, if anyone looking for to get the update as soon as its released, then most of them are wasting time and money on this tab or TF. They should instead get themselves xoom.

I'm looking to upgrade from my original Galaxy Tab within the next few weeks. I have narrowed my search down to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Sony Tablet S. There obviously isn't a Tablet S forum to ask this question yet, but I was wondering what the Tab owner's opinion would be.
Should I get the already-established Tab 10.1, or spring for the brand new Tablet S?
i took the plunge and bought the 32gb 10.1 at the weekend and am loving it so far. Couple of work arounds like using USB adaptor to actually put stuff on it from my mac as try as I might, WIFI transfer and joke that is Kies wouldn't work with my mac.
Like I said, have a work around and haven't encountered any issues yet. The HDMI adaptor is also working a treat...have to have it plugged into the power supply but great picture and sound through the TV.
I thought about the S1 too, but I think with the note book design, it'll be too thick. The 10.1 just feels right in the hand. Nearly waited for the smaller Galaxy Tab 8.9 , but the 10.1 with wide screen it a great size for travel and watching on my TV at home which is the main reason for me to get it.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Tab but Tegra2 is not all that great and with the next wave of tablets like the Galaxy Tab 7.7, the Toshiba A200 and the widely-rumoured Amazon tablet(s) all featuring far superior CPUs, if you can hold off it'll be worth it.
Unless your in the U.S. The tab 7.7 doesn't look like it's coming to the U.S. due to it's ability to be a phone no service provider will work with it. And if you live outside the U.S. the Amazon Kindle Tablet will have only the Amazon app store installed on it and only 8gb. Not too mention no Google support.
Since your in a forum now I am guessing your ready to buy now and not wait. I researched forever when I purchased my Tab 10.1 back in June. Absolutely love it! It's so light, the screen is amazing, touchwiz is OK and after Installing Adw ex from the market it is so smooth. My co-workers awe struck when using it. Two of whom have dropped over a grand on ipad 1 and 2 now want to switch to Android because of its customization. With Ice Cream Sandwich coming everything is moving into the cloud for storage making USB or SD cards non important for tablets.

The original 7" Galaxy Tab had the ability to function as a phone and, unless I'm mistaken, every major US network carried it - they just disabled that function.

If it's Android, people will find a way to put the Google apps onto it.
I'm just going by what I have read, which is the 7.7 is not coming to the u.s. (we haven't even sniffed the 8.9 yet) And this I do not know of, but can other countries access the amazon app store?

No-one's had the 8.9 yet, so that doesn't really mean anything.
And whilst I appreciate that you're only repeating what's been said elsewhere, the problem with that is that it's a matter of days since the Tab 7.7 was unveiled, nothing will have been decided yet...

Not without tricking your phone into thinking it's in the US, I don't think.
I'm actually surprised about the number of responses! The original Tab's forums are slow.
I have the T-mobile version of the Galaxy Tab and I am in the US, so I'm stuck deciding either to have voice calls, or use 3g. This only effects the T-mobile tabs too, guh.
Since I am in the US, I'm not going to see the Tab 7.7, and after having a 7 inch tab for a while, I can say that there are a few reasons why I don't want to have another. Portability was great, but I have a Captivate, which essentially does everything my Galaxy Tab does, only on a smaller screen.
Amazon's tablets are going to lack Google support, which is a very important thing to have, so I'm going to pass those up.
You guys are talking me out of the Tablet S with all this praising of the Tab 10.1. Are there any cons I should be worried about?

I can't help but imagine that quite quickly after release, someone will work out how to get the proper Android market up and running on the Amazon Tabs.
But it's understandable that you wouldn't want to take the risk, not to mention the first one to be released is likely to be a 7" model, unless I'm mistaken...

The lack of a memory card slot on the wi-fi model is criminal but other than that, not really.
Just don't use TouchWiz and you'll be fine.
I definitely would say 10.1... However, I do like Touchwiz

Seeing as the Tablet S is more or less preloaded with those apps, and I'll be able to get most of them elsewhere, all except the universal remote, I'll pick up the Tab 10.1. Especially reading that the Tablet S has some issues with getting scratched easily on the screen and the cheap feeling casing.
Now my next question will be what accessories would be worth investing and where should I get them? Obviously, I'd like a case, and the USB adapter would be a worthwhile investment. Is the docking station/HDMI connector and/or keyboard dock worth getting at all?
Now, I hear a bunch of mixed results for Touchwiz. I'm quite familiar with using TouchWiz on my original Tab and my Captivate, so that has essentially been the whole Android experience for me. At least I think. I normally don't use the default launcher, I've stuck it out with ADW for as long as I can remember, so what will I be missing out by using TouchWiz vs the AOSP ROMs?
Speaking of ROMs, which one should I flash over first?
And the final question is, white or grey?
No down about Tab 10.1 thump up...
Touchwiz stabilizes many of the bugs I was running into on stock honeycomb (browser crash, keyboard lag)
I also love the version of Swype that came with it.
I wouldn't go back to stock at this point, even though I prefer the stcok look. It's easy enough to get a different launcher, though. In any case, you can always go back to stock.
As the owner of a Vibrant, I can say the Tab's version of TW seems quite a bit less intrusive than tw 3.0 on your captivate. Honestly, I never hated it on the Vib either, just the look of it and I put lp on to solve that.
Anyway, I find the tab a joy to use. I barely use my phone (unless it's to tether) or my desktop anymore.

I think the only reason to get a Sony would be if you already have a house full of Sony devices that can benefit from the integration it purportedly can offer. As it is, those features are probably easily supplanted by regular apps from the Market.
Purchasing ANY tegra 2 tablet right now would be the biggest mistake you can make. Especially if you already have a tablet and want to upgrade.
Tegra 2 is a VERY old SoC. I does not run many HD video due to its very slow video accelerator. This is a big problem with tegra 2 units.
Quad core tablets with true HD video hardware acceleration start shipping next month. They will be just as thin as current tablets and have similar battery life. Dont waste your money on Tegra 2. You have been warned. Tegra 2 is for phones not tablets.

What are some quad core tablets I could look into?
The only two companies who are expected to release quad-core tablets soon are Amazon and Asus.
However, last I heard, Amazon had put back their quad-core 10" tablet 'til next year and there was no expected date for Asus' follow-up to the Transformer.
Yap, I agree with step, get an asus, a quad core would be better to perform everythg, including replacing a netbook. Perhaps a quad core is able.to boot a window 8 , lol

That info is good enough for me. I bought the original Tab back in March, and upgraded 6 months later. I plan on having the Tab 10.1 last me closer to a year, and with no expected date for the first gen quad cores, I'm sure I'll be able to nab one in a back to school sale or something like that this time next year.

Maybe next year with ICS and Quad-Core CPU's there will be some reason to upgrade.
I would recommend to you to sit down and enjoy your GT10.1 until a significantly better and more powerful tablet becomes available.
There is no better option today - simple as that!
If you don't like some minor lags and bugs present on Honeycomb, you can try the iPad2. I tried and gave up - I really don't adapt to Apple's limited iOS, I like the freedom to customize and play with the OS - and only Android can give me that.
And looking on other Android tablets, I went for the GT10.1 because of its weight and thickness - which was important to me, because my primary use is for ebook handheld reading.
My sincere advice - enjoy your tablet and wait for mid-2012 - there will be plenty of new options by then!

I'm with you m8, I think most people who post asking when the next os update is coming out or what the next device your going to upgrade to are really missing out. Instead of worrying about all that... Just enjoy.
And in my honest opinion the GT10. 1 is on the top of the heap right now... I had an Xoom for a week, took it back. I have a EVO View 4G that I use for work and my Tab knocks both of them out of the water.

Instead of replacing I like to have more than one. I was tempted by Sony S1 but held myself from buying it. (Just for PSX games. But no HDMI on board.) I had a Transformer for a week. I have a GTAB 7 which I rarely use now. I love 10.1, but I miss the sim, and sd slots there. USB adapter is not the best solution. I really dont care how thin or light it is. My next tablet will not be a Samsung this time. I am really tired of waiting for them to update the firmware. I did manual update for Gtab7. S1 is getting 3.2 update now. Xoom and others too. I think I will wait this time for a quad core.... and I am very tempted for a windows 8 slate, but market and battery issues with W8 is a question mark.
I am in the camp of loving my tab. I don't even think about other tablets. I picked mine up on launch day in the u.s. and in the 3 months that I have had it we received the touchwiz update. With word of ICS coming this fall I see no reason for Samsung to spend any resources on honeycomb 3.2, really what is the point to spending all those development resources on 3.2 when everybody will be moving to ICS?
You also have to wonder just how much improvement the new processors will affect what tablets can do. You will hear people say that newer tablets can do this or that but if you look at how technology evolves, the improvement comes in steps, not giant leaps. I personally am not going to drop $500 plus on a new tablet and accessories every year, although Best Buy would love that. Did you buy a new desktop computer every year? This doesn't just pertain to android either, other than weight and a crappy camera, what does the ipad 2 do that the first can't?
I bet in one year in the transformer 2 or xoom 2 forums there will be a thread that reads, "was upgrading really worth it?" Or "why is there only a handful of apps that utilize the quad core?"
I also understand that there are people who absolutely have to have the newest tech and play around with it. Like a hobby. But then there are also others who just never will be satisfied with what they have.
Personally I think I will wait and upgrade every two years like my phones so that you can see marked improvement and give time for developers to increase the amount of content that is compatible with newer devices. Sure I can want more ports and not just a 30 pin connector but I knew this when I bought the tab, so I can't really complain about it. Long story short- I use my tab every day, getting my moneys worth, see you in two years on another forum.

More seriously, I just dropped several hundred on the Samsung 10.1 a few months ago so why bother with crippling my enjoyment by worrying about obsolescence? There will no doubt be something newer and better soon enough, but I doubt it will be able to do anything more other than this one and feature only incremental improvements.
The Windows 8 Tablets will suck for home use unless they actually relase an ARM version of that OS. I wouldn't want to cuddle up on the couch with a tablet that had a cooling fan.
Lookout for the iPad 3,though. It just might be slick enough to excuse Apple's restrictions.

Sorry, but today I spent hours playing Crash Bandicoot on my 55" Samsung TV. Fpse+ps3 joypad+Samsung hdmi adapter. So I am quite happy with the hdmi out. No flickering. Only I don't have all screen estate. Bars both sides.

If I had the cash to toss around I would seriously be looking at the Toshiba Excite that's about to come out. Don't know too much about specs but it has on board microUSB, USB, and a microSD card slot, on a surprisingly thin body. That would be pretty cool.
xoom2 for me, i've had the xoom but took it back and now i have the sgt 10.1. It has been stated that a quad core ics tablet will be out before christmas so i will probably take back this sgt and wait for that.

B&N had to cut prices, Asus memo will be out very soon. And at $250 for a quad-core, with camera, GPS, and BlueTooth, it will eclipse the Nook Tablet and all bargain tablets.
Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't call this a "bargain". NT cannot recognize more than 2 points on the screen at any time, the wifi is buggy at best, the internal memory is almost not accessible. All in all, it's a good ereader. And that's it. The Kindle Fire is a far superior device. My only grip with the KF is that its memory is limited to 8 gigs and no microSD extension possible.

Well I for one am still very happy with mine. The wifi bug isn't that bad, and I have confidence the devs will get it under control. I have no problem accessing ask the space I need, and the battery life is incredible.
Having great dev support is not something to take lightly. The guys working on the NT are doing a great job. My Samsung Fascinate didn't have a usable CM7 until it had been out for almost a year. I wouldn't put it past them to get better multi-touch support for this device as well.
All in all, it's a great device, and the great dev support makes it even better.

Oh, come on. There's always something "new" in the horizon - better, faster and cheaper (ie, the Quad Core Asus). And if you wait long enough for the Asus, something *even* better will be "just around the corner".
The B&N is, for me, an*incredible* deal. I own a Galaxy SII, a Motorola Atrix (heavily modded) and I got an iPad 2 at the office. I can't believe how much I got when I bought my Nook for $250. I'd definitely do it again. It's *not* only a good eReader - it's a tremendous game machine (I haven't yet found a single game with any sort of lag), a great browser, a perfect multimedia device... the list goes on and on. IMHO, I'd rather have the Nook than my iPad, it's far, far more useful right now (rooted, with GoLaunch EX and minor tweaks). CM7 will only make things better.
Its problems are trivial. No true multitouch? Why would it be a dealbreaker? Wi-Fi bug? I've seen it every once in a while - my HP laptop is far, far worse. What else is there? Nothing. Again, to me, it delivers far more than I ever expected out of it.
I've seen cheaper tablets around - some chinese junk running at 1.5 GHz (LOL). They look cheap and have no warranties whatsoever. For me, the NT and the KF are what tablets are all about, and I'd rather own either one of them than wait for something that may or may not come out soon (the Asus Quad Core).

Well said i think exactly as you do and not because the a new tablet with more specifications with same or better price is round the corner means the quality will be good and the development for it will be fast, so far with the nook tablet devs have done an amazing job far before than what i ever expected. There is always people that do not appreciate the work that is being done and on top of that they ask for more, unfortunately XDA has got many of those, its a shame.
I think the nook tablet is an investment and i feel very happy with it, i will for sure enjoy it for a while and once another good deal like the NT comes out with decent hardware (not Chinese junk as @fjhuerta say) and green lights for development maybe then i would think in upgrade.

1) yes
2) very easy...check put the development forum and you'll see the one click root. In a few days CM7 will be released in greater fashion than previously. In a month or so the nook tablet and its downfalls will be completely absent. The devs have been incredible with this device and it's only getting better and better. I purchased mine on release day and my love for it grows by the day. I've owned the kindle fire as well...but I did return it because it lacked the ram power of the nook tablet, and I could certainly tell(yes I was rooted on it as well).
Trust your gut. In the long run, I think if you choose the nook tablet, you'll be extremely happy.

My advice: don't! Your chances of getting a dud are higher than ever. I've had mine for over 2 yrs. It requires regular (every 6 weeks) wipes due to slow-downs and freezes (used to bootloop, too). It's very likely I'm older than your mom (69, in fact), but Android is a hobby so I just do what has to be done to keep my N9 working. Can she maintain it if it's a dud, too? Although a lot of N9 owners who've posted in these forums never had any issues, many of us have. I don't know if she's Apple-familiar, but the newest iPad is actually a pretty good deal. Otherwise, I can't help. I still keep my N9 because nothing else has come along to entice me. I bought it for the larger display, and that has never disappointed me. It's not only large but very clear and crisp. In the end, I will say that I will NEVER buy another HTC product despite how may "great" devices they may have put on the market. JMO.

I echo the sentiments of the previous posters and their comments.
DO NOT BUY A NEXUS 9 unless you can get one for a ridiculously cheap price AND you're technically capable of dealing with it when things go wrong...
As they sometimes do...
For example, I've just had another (yep, not the first time) hard and spectacular crash on my own Nexus 9, whilst doing something no more taxing on the hardware than performing a simple Google search via the persistant search bar in Nova launcher, and which resulted in a pixellated mess on the screen and a screeching cacophony emanating from the speakers. (See attached photo.)
It required two 'forced' power-downs (long press on the power button) and reboots to get the device up and running again .
I was thinking (after the second failure to boot) I'd have to reflash the thing from scratch. Which is something I've done many times before, but it's a time consuming chore - fortunately the device rebooted without issues the second time I forced powered it down.
The Nexus 9 is OK (not 'great', but 'OK') when it works... A pain-in-the-fundament when it doesn't!

So... I recommend you look elsewhere for a tablet. One of the above posters recommended an iPad. My mum (she's 75) has one and has absolutely no problems with it.

Size? Stock Android could be an issue unless you want something you can root. Samsung has some nice tablets (tab A, for one) that don't cost the entire bank but they do run Samsung software over Android. Amazon fire tablets come in a wide variety of sizes, features, with matching prices. I've never had one so can't speak to the software.

I love it, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone ever though.
Unrooted, stock, came home today and the OS is toast, going to have to re-flash and set up again. This is the second or third time in two years. The thing literally does nothing for me other than run a book reader app and has bombed doing nothing.
It also sometimes decides not to charge. Not a bad connection, not a bad charger, it just decides it's going to run the battery to past dead and then once you unplug and plug it back in - bam, oh hey you wanted to charge? yeah gimme a couple hours before you get anything on the screen.
Meanwhile rocking multiple HTC products (who also manufactured the Nexus 9) and have only once since 2013 had the experiences I've had multiple times with the 9 since 2016.
Plus if you suspect the battery is at fault, well, good luck finding one.

ohh jeez. i just joing this forum cause i purchase one a few hours ago. on facebook ad for $60 could pass the deal for this tablet. so far is running great and looks brand new. but most u are talking long term. in a few week or a month. lets see how that goes. cause my nexus 7 2013 is also working rock solid.

I just bought a Nvidia shield tablet from eBay for $200. It was between the Nexus 9 and the shield tablet... Wish I had bought the shield a few weeks ago when Nvidia was still selling them. Or even a year ago.. its a two year old tablet and still the best.. They are really hard to find now, sold out on swappa and pulled from all storefronts. I checked eBay every few hours for a day and found one in pristine condition... It's still in the mail. All the rest of them on there are priced well over $200... It would have been the perfect tablet for her if you could find one. It's got front facing speakers, same cpu/gpu as the Nexus 9. Better build quality. Nearly stock Android. Sd card slot. Hdmi output to easily plug into tv. The shield K1 literally has it all, only beaten by the pixel c with the x1 cpu.. which is over priced and too big for my tastes, doesn't have a sd card slot and doesn't support adapters to HDMI.
Regardless I'd suggest the Pixel C, it's the best tablet if you don't mind it's price, size/weight and lack of sdcard slot as they only sell the 32gb varient now for $600. It's pure Android and will receive all the latest updates before any non pixel device. Or just take the gamble and get a Nexus 9... They are selling for 290 for the 32gb black varient atm which was tempting to me... But I've read nothing but troubles with that devices hardware that I've decided to stay away.
So far the tablet is wonderfull. Fast and good bild quality. Problems are only the backlight (im use to amoled gs8 plus). And the sound is good but i heard it was much better before the last few update which is the question i want to ask.
We probably wont get anymore update since it is official this table is not getting 7.1.2. Should i root? It says installing a new kernel fix the audio problem.
Other than that. Best $60 i have ever spend. Dont go spending $200. U can find it so low on craiglist, offerup, facebook ad. I had 3 guy say yes to $70. And this one i got was $60 but he was a few miles from my house.

using mini bowser instead of chrome
this tablet is amazing. fast. does not heat up, getting around 10 hour SOT. gaming even underclock perform incrediable. rigtide 2 runs at 60fps max resoultion. no hicup just like my ipad pro.
my only concern right now is not even the ram. is only having 4gb left storage. 16gb model is just not enough. 64gb would have been sweet.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Nexus 7 (2013)!!
If your mother doesn't mind a smaller 7" tablet, it's the perfect choice!
Same amount of RAM as N9, it's rock solid, still gets support in XDA (You could set it up for your mother, and check up on it once a month or something.)
I had a great N9, owned it for nearly 2 years...not one glitch.
Then it was stolen
Now my GF bought me a new one last xmas, and it just isn't the same...very slow and laggy.
So I can confirm what people have said, some units aren't up to standard.
