Verizon Razr Vs GSM Razr - Motorola Droid RAZR

Is it just me or should there be a different forum for just the GSM Razr Developments. So far it looks like there are roots for just one or the other but not a all in one solution for both versions. Correct me if wrong but if this is going end up the case that Roms, and rooting instructions won't work on all versions then since this is the DROID RAZR forum topic then thats what needs to be posted here.
So far some call it GSM Razr some call them by the 2 or 3 different Razr models, and some just say Razr. What models are being talked about in all the Dev topics really should have a uniform way of dealing with each version or else there is going to be problems.
Like I said if I am wrong then ignore this, but I look at the topics and it gets confusing at times what models are really being talked about or what models are supported by a certain root method. I reiterate, if it doesn't work for the Verizon DROID RAZR then should it actually be posted in this forum at all?
Admins have any take on this? This forum section does state it is for the DROID RAZR.

With such a new device, any development is good development. Other devices get by with topics flagged as [GSM] or [CDMA], I don't really see any point in creating a second forum until there's actually enough discussion to merit it. Both currently have locked bootloaders, and aside from Verizon bloatware, the same software setup (The GSM version's software even contains references to Verizon). There may be reason to open a GSM RAZR forum soon, but now - so soon after launch - isn't really it.
People just need to a) Flag threads they start better, and b) Read threads they didn't start properly.

It has been already taken into consideration. For starters a good forum management and thread title is required.
BTW, this is in the wrong froum, this is development forum
Moving this to General.

It would be nice to have them separated like all of the other devices. This forum is going to grow and alot of noobs are going to flash wrong roms and fixes. Then developers are going to have a harder time trying to figure out why things are not working. Yes people are supose to read everything but they don't and then a simple thread turns into a hundred pages of trolling and pissed off developers. I am one who does read everything and trust me I came from the Thunderbolt and that forum sucks and it lost alot of good developers do to people that don't read everything. Even the general section, people are asking question and listing problem but not saying what device they have.

Exactly! This is exactly what I was talking about. I don't want to flash the wrong ROM just because some one didn't label correctly.

Since it was about ROMS and how DEVS list their roms and root methods I felt that it was the correct forum.

I need a clarification on the bootloader part. As far as it was announced, the Int'l version of the RAZR is supposed to have an unlocked bootloader whereas the US-only version (AKA Droid Razr) will have a locked boot-loader.
Can anybody confirm this for a fact? Coz I'm in India and I want to buy this but if its got a locked boot-loader here as well, I'll have to re-think.

Now that there is a thread about this, I would like to ask if there is a difference in the total memory allotted to the device. I mean, the Internal and external
memory...I am from India, so will I get a mem card as opposed to a US version?
Thanx! (didn't want to make a thread for this one question...so am asking here.)

You wouldn't get external memory card in Asia version as far as I known. You need to buy it yourself(slot support up to 32GB). Yes, Internal memory is 16GB but you can only use 8GB. The rest 8GB is for application storage (3GB around), system and Webtop...

Impossible... system storage & applications storage are already in 16GB. For webtop partition, it is possible to access if someone hack it..

I understand this, but there are about 4 or 5 names they are calling the Razr. And they are not always clear what phone people are talking about.
Razr
Moto Razr
Droid Razr
Razr (CDMA)
Razr (GSM)
When some people use the top 3 of this list interchangeably then that is where problems come up. I'm sorry to be that guy, but when I end up rooting my phone I don't want to brick it due to someone using the wrong name for the phone they made the Root/ROM for. Since I am not the only one that has shown that this could in fact become a problem, then maybe it should be looked into a bit further in the next few weeks as ROMS and other root methods come available.

AFAIK, the international version ships with an unlockABLE bootloader. The lock/unlock decision is left up to the carrier, and Verizon has elected to shut down the ability to unlock the bootloader on their devices.

Regarding the two sections... I've already said that to our moderator, but it seems that for now we have to write GSM or CDMA.
I'm sure anyway that when GSM and CDMA RAZR community will grow the admins will give us separate android development sections

[Q] Sub forum for Razr?

Has anyone ever talked about or put it as a request to the Mods to split the Razr forum into sub-forums, like have a Razr GSM forum and a Razr CDMA forum? It gets very hard to read every single thread to tell if it is about gsm or cdma. If I may I would like to put this to the mods to help simplify this forum a little. Please.
Mods please, if possible this would help so much.
I too agree with this, as a new member. Separating the GSM phone from the CDMA version will stop issues like flashing the wrong rom, resulting in less threads started asking how to recover from a boot loop or other issues.
This would be a godsend, please make this happen, if CDMA and GSM seemd to tacky then name them Motorola DROID RAZR and Motorola RAZR

It's nice to see someone using the correct names.
Just use the codename, Motorola Spyder. Then Subforum for each variant.
Motorola sure will reused Razr name in future device.
But reality is... with more sub-forum, it will create more fragmentations.
Android fragmentation is already bad. Now you all want to split this phone into sections.
The essential part of this phone is almost same, all run the same Application Processor(AP).
You suggestion is already taken into consideration. This is our suggestion in the mean time....

i have been using the droid x2 for about two years. it has a locked bootloader, and very limited abilities as far as flashing roms goes. kernels will be a new thing to me. i have noticed that in most rom install instructions, there are no specifications on what version to be on. lol not something i am used to.
could someone point me in the right direction for some reading material on the subject? this phone specifically? i understand a fair amount about being rooted and performing various things within recovery and android in general. i just want to make sure that before i go messing around with my s3, i know exactly what im doing. thanks in advance.
also, i have read a decent amount already, and it seems like this phone is fairly easy to brick,? also not something i am used to. the droid x2 with its locked bootloader was next to impossible to brick.
cant wait to join the ranks.! thanks again.

Good choice, mate!
Which S3 is it? I see you're in the USofA. There are several variants of S3 in the world. American/Canadian S3's are the Snapdragon variant, not the International variety, which is what this forum is for. If it is not the GT-I9300, anything you flash from here will definitely brick your phone.

thank you sir. ! i guess i would be getting the non international version. :highfive:
international version has many developers than the other variants. once you start flashing custom roms or kernels or mods, there is no guarantee that your phone will not brick. flashing without damage to the phone depends on how you do that. goodluck.

Yeah Make sure you're in the right forum for your phone. Follow that chart for your carrier.
Also if you happen to be getting T-Mobile,there is a new variant that has the LTE radio T999L which is a hardware difference and not a simple software upgrade. So if you did happen to get T-Mobile, hopefully you have the LTE variant.

Click on your phone info.
Write down the last 3 digits if your build version.
If it is MJ7 enjoy your Samsung iphone or take the risk of Chinese infiltration with vroot.
If its anything else, type go to GOOGLE.COM and type in those 3 letters followed by the word "Root".
Good luck!
Doesn't get much simpler than that.. :sly:

Is it unlockable through the ROM/software here on XDA or any other reliable ROM/sofware?
Please can you guys list the instructions or a link that tells me A to Z what to do. Thanks!

You can't root using a reliable technique, and even if you root you can't install custom ROMs at the moment. Safestrap may eventually become possible.

The I545 is not simlocked, which means that you can run any carrier's SIM. There are SEVERAL threads here that explain what you need to do to run an I545 on T-Mobile. Unfortunately, the search function is broken yet again, but there is NO excuse for starting another thread on a topic that has been covered several times before.
I know, you can't tell, but this is a very frequently asked and answered question.

I love this website, but I still haven't used it once because I search through threads always find answers like this. Its truly amazing how the website owners have sections for different versions and different hardware. But constant trolling by veteran users is common.
This(android) is an open source project but that doesnt mean every one here knows what people are talking about. I get discouraged posts like the one above^^. I have been using android since it came out on G1 and still havent rooted any of my devices YET. This time I actually thought I would but you know what **** this.
Anyways last attempt? Can my device be RELIABLY(trusted) carrier unlocked so I can use it on Tmobile. Thanks.
Also is there a thread where I can lookup jargon/lingo/acronyms specific to this site/genre? Link please.

Non-Verizon SIMs work for me, but I'm not using a SIM from some other US carrier.

Sorry if you thinking this is "trolling by a veteran user".
First, you need to understand: the i545 is not SIM locked. Any SIM will work.
However, there's some question as to whether or not that SIM will allow other US carriers to work. Mine works with a SIM that gives me AT&T data. (It's from a European carrier.)
Here's how you can answer your question. First, look at the top of this window.
There's a box on the top reading "Search this forum".
I entered "tmobile" there, then got the following threads:

Basic steps are to get a sim.
Then go and see if it picked ip the APN settings. If not you should be able to create a new APN and put in the values manually. Search on xda for the values
Finally. Theres a thread in xda that explains how to download a phone info app. Which will allow you to set the phone radio to LTE/GSM.
last thing you want to check is that you can do wifi, sms, mms, voice mail, etc.

A lot of people do make things for themselves, I run my own crappy builds all the time as I'm learning. Of course the more experienced developers release stable work for the public. Regardless, the purpose of the site isn't to release software for the "everyday android user".
It's about the journey not the end result.
I really can't explain the purpose of this site any better than this post by Kyphur:
"I think what a lot of people forget is that this is not a "make my phone neat & kewl" place.
As implied by the name this is technically a Developers forum/community.
Now what does that mean? Well first off it means that there is an expectation that if you are here then you want to customize your device but rather than just installing something that someone packaged you want to understand how it works and maybe even enhance it yourself.
When I first came here with a Blue Angel it was a different environment. PDA Phones were not embraced by the general public because of the expense and complexity (I paid over $400 for my BA). A $400 phone 4 years ago was expensive, today the Tilt is $300 after rebates but with inflation & the rise in the cost of other devices and the fact that there are other sources out there giving them away for $150 our neat bit of kit has become popular with mainstream users.
Now we have a flood of new users who are asking not "How can I do this myself" but more like "Give me the quick fix" without caring to understand the process. See if you read the threads then you get to experience the learning process, you see how the issues were investigated and confirmed. Then you get to watch the different attempts at resolution and learn why some failed while others worked. That is called Development.
The NooB backlash is coming from users who have walked in the development shoes and is directed mainly at those who don't care for the journey but just want the end result or destination.
As a Development Forum we are just as much (if not more) about the journey. I've read so many comments like "I don't have time to read all of the threads" or "I don't care how it works, just that it does". These very statements are contrary to the heart & soul of XDA-Devs and that is why the backlash is so strong.
Let me be very clear on this: IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE JOURNEY THEN YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
XDA-Devs is about developers & hackers helping each other and working together to get the most out of our devices by understanding them better than most.
XDA-Devs is not about helping everyone who wants a "Kewl bit of kit" make their phone better than the guy next to him.
Now do we go kicking users off who never contribute anything, NO. We tolerate it to an extent. Where the toleration ends is when these users start diluting the usefulness of the forum by repeating the same questions over and over again.
You ask us to understand your position. Well if you want to benefit from our experience and time then I think it is only fair that you understand our position."

As for developer part you guys are programmers and hackers and its your hobby and its pretty cool you do this stuff on daily basis, but for me that is too far ahead.

We were all newbs here, I'm no programmer I just like learning code because I like learning how all of this stuff works. I'm glad you want to start learning to. All I did in the beginning was google search "rooting" and a bunch of write-ups & video's came up that taught me a lot.
I think this all falls under off topic this is really not the place for senior members to try b!+ch slap junior members, staying on topic is how this site operates

[Q] Variant based forums

Being a Member of XDA for a while now I recall in the past on different models that XDA use to create sub-forums for Carrier Variants. I.E. Verizon, Sprint, GSM based. This was helpful for the noobs and Rom creators in making sure that Noobs didn't flash the incorrect Rom or Recovery.
Looking at the HTC One Max forums there occasionally is this confusion as members will post a general variant specific issues and a novice not knowing the difference would unintentionally use it thinking it applied to their device. Some Devs don't identify there Roms or indicate a variant which contributes to the issue.
I think it would be very beneficial for development on this device to have Variant based sub forums. Additionally having variant based sub-forums will help identify Underdeveloped devices.
Just my 2 cents.

I'm sure when we get way more than 3 threads in original and 3 in development they will look at dividing the Max forum. Until then we need anyone that posts anything to ensure they identify what model it will work on. I believe most of the development done for us thus far does not identify which model it works for because it works across all (in one form or another).
To be honest most if not all of the issues people have had thus far is because they are not searching and reading to understand something before they do it. I guarantee a dev or someone with knowledge will try to help the best they can. BUT no one wants to help someone that doesn't try to help themselves by understanding what they are doing first.
If anyone notices that some development is device specific and it is not labeled as such then ping the dev and ask that they identify it appropriately. And if anyone feels strongly enough that something is not labeled or mislabeled that could end up causing issues with someone's device then AFTER ASKING THE OP to update feel free to contact one of our mods to correct or close the thread until it is adjusted. Many hands make light work...
i can see both points here

I can see the point as well. But it will be a while before the forums are divided if at all. I said "until then" because we all need to work together now to police the threads to make sure things are made clear if they are not.

yeah i know what you mean. we clearly need more roms and development before anything gets split up

I know coming from the Motorola Droid HD forums that the impact of not separating them is lots of "Learning Experiences". I am quite learned in the rooting/bootlocker experience and even I was confused by the variants in that forum. I got it sorted out but it took longer then is should have.
I am in the process of learning java and android development and I plan on properly labeling my threads and apps. Oh and Blender for Custom Boot Animations. I have a Plan for A Doctor Who based Animation.
Plus I like tidiness and organization. Makes things more efficient.
How do I tell which version of the One Max I have?
It's one of the 32 gig versions, it's gsm and works on United states ATT. baseband version is 4T,27.3218.14_10.33C.1718.01L Software number says 3.15.1540.1 I think it might be the Hong Kong or British one, but it's been quite confusing trying to figure out which is which. I bought it off Amazon, so I know there's a chance that the software has been "improved' a bit.
Thanks for any help-I did try to search on it, but wasn't finding anything with useful info for me, or possibly I just don't know where to look. It's been some few years since I had an HTC..I bought the original G1 on opening day
Any help, or even just a point in the right direction would be most appreciated. I'd like to get this sucker rooted and get rid of the crapware as soon as possible

[Q] Most root-friendly Verizon phone

My how things have changed. After having fun with many iterations of droids (Eris, D2G, Bionic), I had a rude awakening with my recent Razr M purchase. It was already on an OTA which apparently won't allow for the bootloader to be unlocked. I WAS rooted and doing alright with that, but I took the KK update and just like that, no more root. I was mislead into thinking I could root after the OTA, but that was apparently wrong.
I am bound and determined to keep my unlimited data with VZW, but also want a phone that can be rooted and preferably allow for custom ROMs as I have enjoyed in the past. I would like to stay in the mid-2012 and forward range. Does anyone have recommendations on a phone that is conducive to root/bootloader unlock? Apparently VZW has been keeping up with the exploits found by the dev community (thus my razr m frustrations) and fixing them with OTA updates. Does have any recommendations?
I have done my own research and not found a ton. I've been looking for dev edition phones but they are spares and/or expensive. I have heard the HTC One is still quite open, any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
Also, if this is not the most appropriate forum for this post, please advise with my apologies.
Sorry for the reply on own post. Is this the wrong board for this post? If so can someone direct me to the proper board?
