Picture quality and resolution - HTC Amaze 4G

I've noticed that the pictures in lower-than-normal light look a bit grainy. I've noticed that even at 8mp (3264x1840), the file size is about 1 mb. On every other camera I've used, 8mp resolution was about 4-6 mb. Is there any way to reduce the amount of compression applied to images? Can't imagine they would lock us into such a high compression rate without the ability to adjust it.

Try flashing xboarders amazing quick sense or ARHD custom roms. I'm not sure but I think most custom sense roms have zero compression in the camera app.

You may want to try ProCapture. Im taking photos with this app and it gives much nicer ones than either my stock telus camera or quiksense 1.4.1 camera.

I used Root Explorer (Market) and altered the "media_profiles.xml" file to "100" for all compression levels for the camera. I also set the ImageDecoding Memcap to 80000000 instead of 20000000. Now my shots are all 5mb and above. HOWEVER...the problem appears to be the bit depth which is 8 and the ppi resolution is only 72. This is extremely poor for any camera. Unless the ppi resolution can be changed within the camera, I am of the opinion that there is no hope! It is a very tiny sensor compared to even a point and shoot camera so perhaps that is the best we can expect. I compared before and after picture quality and even at 5mb and up compared to 1-2mb, the exact same pictures still look the same!

Interesting. I did compare shots and the larger files didnt seem noticeably different.
I dont know enough about camera but that bit depth is poor for anything. Im assuming this was a tricky way to get the zero shutter lag going ?
Maybe a dev can take a gander and share his/her thoughts.

Yes the bit depth is horrendous! It is usually created by the hardware engine for the sensor so if that is all HTC put into it, I doubt any dev can make it better with a software patch if it truly is in the hardware. I tried my settings on all camera modes and I get around 5-7mpx for everything except the Clear Shot HDR. That locks the camera app up! I've been using Pro HDR camera anyway because it allows you to save up to an 8mpx image at full resolution. I have it in the same folder as the camera and camcorder (I love folders!) so I just select that when I want to shoot an HDR. I use my Panasonic G2 for normal shots and video anyway. The phone camera is just in case I don't have my big camera with me. I don't think HTC should even try to brag about how great this camera is. At 8mpx and 72ppi, it is a joke!

I'll be adding "Sony Bravia Engine" in my next ROM which increase's photo and video quality and i will be adding
ro.media.dec.jpeg.memcap=8000000
ro.media.enc.hprof.vid.bps=8000000
ro.media.enc.jpeg.quality=90 or 100

A different take on this: Compression applied after capturing a low-light image probably isn't what is causing the low image quality & smaller filesize you're seeing. Image quality in all digital cameras drops when light levels fall below the sensor+lens ability to capture enough light for a good picture, and you get the equivalent of using high-ISO film: a grainy image with less detail to write to the file. The Amaze is still better than most phone cams, but will still not do as well as a larger point & shoot camera in low light -- regardless of compression.
That said . . . nope, I haven't 'gone deep' into how well compression itself works on the Amaze.

Holy crap you waited for two years before posting THIS!!!!
lol j.k
Personally its not about having PnS quality as lens size simply wont allow it. But if picture quality can be better...then I want to know. Particularly what the trade off is and why.
I remain curious as to how PQ compares to iPhone4 and GalaxyNexus. Such a pain to find comparison pics.

tried some shots with free version
photos, usually it hase lower is and faster timings, both with or without flash (sometimes razr uses so high isos with flash... 800+, camera ics uses 100 200, with no lighting difference)
some photos have a little better details in indoor, but also have a little more jpeg noise reduction... so usually better...
for videos..
couldn't set more than 1280, and 16fps, and no audio regolations (this is a huge pro for razr camera...)
probably isn't so worth, also cause i have camera zoom fx. camera advance, cameramx, camera360, if i want to shot better photos, with a lot more controls...

Camera mod

Does the camera mod listed in the developers section work on scotts cleanrom standard
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA
Yes, I am currently using the High Quality camera mod and CR4.5 standard. My pics are now 3-5MB in size.
But the camera is an 8 megapixel camera and there are settings for you to set up at other resolutions in the stock app. Can to setup for 8 megapixel in this mod or am I misunderstanding your reply. I am wondering about the overall picture quality noise, etc. In addition to the size factors of course

It doesn't change anything with the actual user-control of the app, it's all background changes. Kinda like changing the build.prop file. It essentially just keeps photos from being compressed, and improves the video recording. I know it does much more than just that, but that's just the gist of it, the camera app itself doesn't change. And the pictures come out a little bit nicer, you won't notice it really until you zoom, and there is better detail.

definitely check it out
I flashed it a couple of weeks ago and my pics are definitely better.
Best mod I've flashed
It definitely helps, but a couple things a lot of people don't know is to uncheck both the auto-enhance and the widescreen boxes.
Both can/will degrade image quality. The auto-enhance can always be added to an image after the fact in the gallery, if the box is not checked (sometimes it helps, other times it makes the pic worse), but it can't be undone if it's checked when the pic is taken.

Xpera S photo quality

Hi there,
i have a Xperia S with Stock Android 4.0 installed.
The phone has a good camera, but the photos are very highly compressed.
e.g. a photo with 4912x1080px is only 282KB in size.
Sony knows about the problem, but it does not look as if it will be fixed sonn.
My question:
Is there a photo app for Android with all the cool ICS-features (Sweep-Panorama and so on...)
in which i can set the JPEG compression quality by myself?
282 KB that seems a bit small, I'm getting between 2-3 MB
Sent from my Xperia S using xda premium
other examples
normal shots:
4000x3000 shot at broad daylight: 1,74MB
4000x3000 at night: 2,05MB
4000x2250 daylight: 2,29MB
sweep panorama:
4912x1080: 376KB
4912x1080: 244KB
the normal shot qualitiy is ok, but not good.
The quality could be so much better, if i can set the jpeg quality higher / manually.
Use PROCAPTURE, its noise reducing mode is good enough, but a bit difficult to use...

My panorama's are around 480kb, normal 12mp pics are 2-3mb like others which is indeed over / aggressively compressed it's quite a dynamic rate in terms of whats in the pic determines its size.
I have tried the camera ics+ app which has quality settings but it doesn't seem to compress any less even on 'ultra' mode which suggests the compression is done early on in the software loops
is there anyway to lose the compression, maybe sony can do it if they want..the 12mp snapper is not up to the performance when in low lights and the flash (camera flash) is really weak, some workaround for the flash ?? maybe?? i am really happy using UCAM , as the Stock camera app is really buggy and 3 out of 5 shots comes out blurred , but still the flash is really weak and causes red eye problems in low light conditons

Weak camera, how to make it better?

Hi Guys,
Ever since ICS and now JellyBean roms the camera quality has worsened...virtually unusable in poor lighting, night pictures impossible and very bad focusing even in good lighting, no detail in pictures and zooming in is just a blur....cheapest no-name camphones from china shoot better pictures than this
The Amaze camera from Gingerbread roms was the best.
How can I get decent pictures again with my EVO 3D...? this is supposed to be a shooteroo

For night time, you just have to put on the torch before you capture the image.
As far as the rest, it is what it is.
A torch is ok when your subject is 4 feet away but doesnt fix the camera...Gingerbread Amaze camera was far better and even had a night shot modus
Have you tried taking a night shot in the street for example? You only see the few lights and everything else is pitch black...
Yeah. Because of the low light and this cameras weird autofocus parameters, I've always had to use the finger technique.
If only they added the manual switch for us. But nope, they had to be scrubs.
The zoom-in blur is due to the fact that it's not a hardware zoom, it's a software zoom, so it blows up the picture, and then cuts out the edges. The quality would be terrible anyways. But, the camera quality should be OK. Look into Pimp My ROM, I changed my cam quality and it has been pretty noticeable for me, due to ROMs having really bad camera configurations, lol.
I meant zoom in into normal pictures...
For example a picture of several people huddled together, when I enlarge (zoom in) everybody is out of focus
which pimp my rom, is it an app?

Yup, it's an application available for free in the Play Store, it's basically an AIO app for tweaking your phone if you have root access. And are you talking about how, if you take a picture, it looks completely fine zoomed out, but if you try to blow it up (double-tap zoom), it looks low quality? If you are, that's also in the Pimp my ROM app, I personally don't know how to make this better by hand, I do know that PMR has it. But it has to do with it being JPEG, which is highly compressed image type, hence low quality.
Thanks, I was thinking more along the lines of a new camera app than a complete rom pimping app...
If you remember Amaze camera from Gingerbread used to be very good.....
I asked in the Yoda thread if it was possible to install that in ICS but its not---

I've honestly never used the Amaze camera, the camera on my ROM seems to be working completely fine to me, then again I always resize my images for size issues, which tends to fix up the blurs in the process.

8MP Camera not 8MP?

Sorry, I seem to bombard you guys with questions (and seem to answer them myself ), but that's not the problem. The problem is with my HTC One X+ not taking 8MP camera (and apps not recognizing the camera as 8MP)... including the main stock HTC One X+ camera app... or so it seems. I've tried Camera Zoom FX which recognizes up to 8MP and it went up to 5.1MP for my camera... a different app went up to 6MP, but mostly it's 5MP (as the best quality for my camera).
All my pictures that I take are very noisy and not clear (file size anywhere between .6 - 1.2MB)... that is not good. Resolution is 3264x1840 (or vise versa if it's vertical).
I don't know what the deal might be... is the camera failing on me (Camera on my previous Samsung Galaxy S3 failed completely... wouldn't open at all)... don't know how the cameras seem to die on me... I do take a lot of pictures, but most of the pictures I've taken are bad quality and very noisy... really really really disappointing since I value the camera a lot... I chose this phone for the 8MP (was afraid of the 4 UltraPixels of One so I went with regular 8MP)... now I regret, seen I'm getting a terrible quality 5MP pictures. (I've seen 5MP phone cameras take MUCH better photos then my "8MP" camera).

What rom are you on?
Also the noisy pictures thing may be caused by the fact that the back cover of the camera has a coating that gets scratched really easy and you should remove it, search in the Q&A forum on how to.
The "8MP camera bug" is one of many annoying bugs introduced in the only HOX+ update. The problem is that HTC messed one file in which there are available photo size options. That way NO external camera app will use full 8 MP. Only 5, 5.1 or 6 (square) MP. However, the stock camera should take full 8MP pictures, I can prove it. Check camera options.
This bug can be fixed if you have root access. I found a tutorial about this here at XDA, but after many, many google searches and I have no idea where it is now.
Install zero compression mod, lyaporta camera mod, 8mp photos are in 4:3, pretty sure widescreen or 16:9 option is only 6mp, as it crops the top and bottom instead of making the sides wider.

Sorry, I can't seem to find the lyaporta camera mod anywhere on XDA... I found a few posts that refers to it, but can't find anything else.
Is this the zero compression mod? If so, how do I flash it? Just put it on my sdcard and install it VIA TWRP? Also, how could I make a back-up of the current camera library? (I use sense 5 and the stock one that they offer there is for sense 4... or does it not matter and I can update it back to be compatible with sense 5?)
Thanks for your awesome help so far!!! I'm pretty new at this.

Well, I tried that zero compression mod thing that I linked above and it does make the file size larger (also changed crop to regular and resolution to 4:3) and the image seems to be a little bit better but if you zoom in it's so noisy, it's just bad...

Flash the zero compression driver that disables the noise reduction rubbish that HTC implements (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2339226). Camera Mod is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2221815, it`s in the modpack , you can install without other mods, it improves image quality by a good deal. How old is the phone, my phone started developing hazy, blurry photos that had a ridiculous amount of bloom in any lit area, I noticed how scratched the lens was, the fix, simply put a small dab of tooth paste and a drop of water on a microfibre cloth and rub the lens in a circular motion for about 5 mins, don`t use too much water cause it can get under the lens, now my lens is as good as new and the camera takes some darn nice photos.

The lyaporta camera mod breaks my phone... it's just stuck in the start-up HTC One logo screen and that's it... I restored to the backup I did before installing the mod, but it doesn't seem to work... maybe I just have to wait a little longer... I waited for like 1 minute on the logo screen before going back to the backup...
