[Q] Charging issue - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My SGSII has developed an issue over night.
When I unplugged the charger this morning it stayed as being on charge and the Battery 100% symbol. It randomly flashed up as charging 3 times in a couple of seconds. It can be fine for anywhere between 5minutes and a few hours and then states on charge again.
I have taken the handset appart and can see no liquid damage and the solder on the micro usb port are all good (no dry joints etc) I gave it all a good clean down with IPA.
Since this morning it has done it several times but seems after the battery drops below 90% it no longer does it.
Any ideas on what to check next? known charging issue? possible battery issue?

Please clean your usb port on the phone using canned air or a dry brush. It's mostly a problem with the contacts short-circuiting!

Tried, also used IPA to make sure no residue is on the contacts.
It's strange it hasn't done it after the battery dropped below 90%. If it was a short it'd be doing it all the time.

Battery Disconnected when you plug phone in to charge

got this tonight,
let the battery get down to ~10%
plug it into the OEM USB wall charge and cable, "battery disconnected"
plugged it into my PC with standard micro USB cable " battery disconnected"
pulled out the battery, and now it seems to be taking a charge, is this something others have seen? is a brand new phone on the first battery charge
Charge over four hours to 100%.
Still a problem return it to the seller .

If it says 'battery disconnected' it probably means that your battery is not touching the pins properly.
I had the same problem and i put a small wad of folded paper behind the battery and then slid it in its place. The battery is now pushed firmly against the pins and voila! the connection is proper and no more 'battery disconnected' !
Hope this solves the prob, if it hasn't already been solved
Same situation here, used some contact spray and problem is soled so far.

Replace USB board/port. Search for KeithRoss39's guide (it isn't stickied, do a search for 'replace USB charger board' or similar). This is quick/cheap (US$10-$15)/easy to do, Keith's thread has all the info you need.
Dont worry
Hey, This is not a big issue. If you get a message as battery disconnected, then it probably means that you have to turn off your phone and take off your batter and put it back. Simple.
If you see same result again, then just simply buy a new batter. I have faced with this issue but now is ok after just taking off and putting it back.
All the best
Check blogowebgo.com for more tips

Took a Q-tip dipped in 91% alcohol and rubbed it to the contacts on both the battery and the phone. No more error. Battery appears to be charging, no problem.

Thanks alot
none of the above worked. looked closely at the contacts and realized there was a thin plastic strip on top of the contacts to protect them. a bit hard to remove the plastic strip, but then the battery was no longer "disconnected" of course

try not to force much the contacts of the usb port or you will be without MTP connection (as happened to me, you can only charge the phone)

[Q] SGS2 strange bug

Hey all,
After being fine for almost 12 months, my phone has suddenly developed a bug. Nothing has changed over the last 24hrs, so I am not sure where it has come from.
It started with a notification saying 'activating USB will turn bluetooth off. Continue?'
There was nothing plugged in to the USB at the time, so I'm not sure why it came up.
I clicked 'NO' but it kept happening constantly until I reset the phone. Then when I turned the phone back on, the battery overheat sign came up. It clearly wasn't running hot, but it only went away after I removed the battery.
Then this morning after I unplugged my phone from the charger it said it was still on charge and the 'battery full' notification wouldn't go away. So I reset my phone, and again the overheat sign comes on. Take battery out.....etc.
Now it is telling me that it is on charge (it isn't) and that USB device notification.
Phone is running 2.3.6. Any ideas?
Possible USB port malfunction. Maybe try cleaning it.

Second that.Clean the port with a cotton bud and cleaning alcohol.
Is Metho ok to use?
I might look up how to take the phone apart and give the insides a proper clean, rather than just poking around the port.
I'll await an answer about the metho before I give it a crack.
Thanks for the replies.
You dont have to take the phone apart
Quite a few people have had problems with dirt in the USB port its caused problems similar to and exactly like yours. All they have done is gone to the chemist,or pharmasy or however its spelt and for a few bucks you can buy cleaning alcohol. It must be this kind because of its high alcohol level it drys quickly and doesnt leave moisture inside when done.A few gentle wipes and thats all it needs.Dont take the phone apart cos the port is closed and it will be of no use.Meth is heavy and will leave alot behind drowning the port again.

[Q] S2 thinks it is charging all the time

I had a minor incident the other night, whereby the (USB) end of my power charger got water on it. I dried it off instantly as best as I could. The phone itself has not come into contact with any water.
It still charged the phone fine... however after removing the charger at 100% the phone continued to say charging. I turned it off and removed the battery for some time. Upon putting the battery back in, the display showed the charging animation again even though it wasn't plugged in. At this point it wouldn't even turn on.
After multiple attempts I managed to get it switched on. But even now, 2 days later after a couple more charges, it still says it is charging when it isn't. The battery % is also depleting a lot quicker than normal.
I tried a factory reset, wiping and installing a new version of the AOKP ROM I use which fixed the issue temporarily... but as soon as I try charging it again, the charging animation won't go away. This happens even with a different charger all together or a USB cable.
Any ideas on fixing this, or is it time to claim on my insurance? Thanks!
may b the enternal is still not dried , actually wen wet its best to dry it in rice bag for a day or atleast 16,20 hrs then clean an use a sylte warm or cold blow so the moist drys out...so first open the back cover, battery ,sim,sd card an let the phone dry properly..cheeeerz
Thanks but as I say, the phone itself never got wet. Literally a minor amount got on the charger... not sure it is worth drying out a phone that never got wet?
but the end of the usb port is wet right so dont do the charging thing jus use a blow dryer let the thing dry out ,i had dropd my phone in luke warm water of bucket ,i removed it an took out battry, cover and kept in rice bag water was all inside cause wen i checked by shaking it ,i could see water coming then i used a blow dryer an dried it but i had kept it rice for hmmm i think only 2,3 hrs ...but i dint on it for 6hrs like tht....then the next day i powered it an all was fine ..accept the speaker at the back but i used a app tht was supposed to clean speaker, well i don kno weater it got well on its own or the app....well thts my story...m8
be careful with the hairdryer though i know people who have melted plastic drying with a hairdryer xD
did you actually found a way to fix it? i have this problem. and i havent been able to fix it.
Also my PC wont recognize the phone.
Try to clean the usbport. If it doesnt work it needs to be replaced. Its fairly easy and cheap.
Theres guides on youtube.
Well i didnt follow a guide on youtube i just opened it used a toothbrush and alcohol and after with a bottle of suter and it kinda worked, the computer recognizes it but the charging thing is still on.
Im gonna check out the youtube videos.
Thanks!

[Q] Battery not charging.

So, to start this off my rezound fell into a pool with me. Rushed and did the usual steps for drying it out and all that. The battery was the only thing that took water damage according to the sensor. So I bought a new one and it won't charge the battery. The one time I got the phone on it read 0% charged after sitting for 6 hours. Now it's either blinking orange or staying orange for around 5 seconds. Is there anything I can do?

Sounds like your phone is damaged, the old battery was probably fine, the water indicator is there to let Verizon know the phone had water damage when people try to warranty them...
I'd throw it in a bag of rice a little longer, see if there's any more moisture stuck in it, otherwise it's time for a new phone...
I had a similar situation, minus the water, but you might try pulling the battery out and charging it manually with a power supply set to supply 5 V and current limited to 1 A. Let it charge like that for 20 min and try putting it in the phone again. If it still will not work, then it could be that the leads on the phone that connect to the battery are corroded and need to be cleaned.

I take that to mean you don't have access to a variable voltage power supply. Not a problem, but it would help if you at least have access to a voltmeter or multimeter. You would need to plug in your charger with cable and test each of the leads to see which two have 5 V across them. Then attach wires to both and the other end of each wire to the positive and negative leads on the battery itself. I would use a different cable (not micro-usb) so that the leads are larger and easier to access. If you cannot do this, then you could use a stand-alone battery charger like this:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/...peId=12852&accessoryId=48042&initialPhoneId=0
But that would require you to buy one, which may be a waste if the phone is actually the problem. But if you do buy it and it turns out the phone is the problem, you could keep the receipt and get a refund.
As far as clean the leads on the phone, you could try mixing baking soda and water (little water) into a thick paste and scrubbing with a tooth brush. The paste will need to sit on the metal leads for some time (30 mins to 2 hours depending). Then use isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) on tissue to clean any remaining garbage/residue. Then you will need to let it dry again, ideally in a sealed container with silica or rice. I would probably leave it in there for at least 24 hours.
If both of these don't fix the problem, then you probably have either shorted some internal circuitry or have some other corrosion inside the phone somewhere.
Well I really can't try that suggestion broke college student and all. Thanks though.
You can get this external charger cheap. I have it, works fine:

Here's a battery to go with it:

Note to self check amazon before ebay. This one should work too right?: http://www.ebay.com/itm/400429190799?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

recharge issue

While my tablet S3 battery was at 30%, I plugged it to its recharger. But I didn't noticed it wasn't recharging.
At 15% of battery the usual message notified to put it in charge.
So I discovered to have no way to recharge it. Checked the the plug, changed charger, wires, but no way to recharge it.
Tried also a soft reset entering the safe mode, but no charge started.
So it seems hard reset is my last chance.
Any suggestion?
Thanks in advance.
Update, neither hard reset fixed it.
Same thing happened to me today.
Its not registering any USB-C connections, including charging. However it does charge very slowly. If the tab is on its just enough to keep it alive. If I turn it off and charge it does like 5% per hour and the charging icon and vibration goes on every 10-15 seconds.
Tried to clean the USB port with a toothpick and got a little bit of yellow stuff out, looked like rust or glue. Tried different chargers and cables, all behave the same.
Ive been very careful with it and I cant imagine what might have caused this.
Yesterday the simcard was disconnecting, maybe related maybe not. Been working fine before that.
