[Q] Unlocked Bootloader w/ Google Acquisition - Motorola Droid X2

So has anyone heard if Google will pass along the necessary materials so that we can finally unlock these Droid x2's bootloaders?
I'm tired of the MotoFail crapware.

Nothin yet

Nothing is going to happen, Motorola is still Motorola. When bungie was bought out by Microsoft they didn't start making operating systems.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App

Verizon requested the device be locked. Google would have to void that contract to release any bootloader keys. Doubt we will ever see an unlocked bootloader on DX/DX2.

The only thing that was really purchased were patents. Google could care less about policies and procedures. They'll still leave that up to Motorola who will also still adhere to their service contracts with Verizon.
There's alot more bureaucracy and players on the field that people might realize on the surface. I wouldn't ever expect to see a bootloader that has been previously locked to be unlocked for any other reason than a mistake of some sort.

Yea What He Said

unlock will ONLY happen if we find it. I.e. a leak
unless someone wants to sit down and spend countless hours trying to decrypt it.

[Q] Is there any chance at all that the bootloader will be locked again?

I upgraded and got an Infuse a little less than a month ago. I was thinking about getting an Atrix but I ended up not because I didn't want a phone with a locked bootloader.
Now that the Atrix is unlocked, I'm thinking about switching since I'm still within my 30 days where I can, but is there any chance at all Motorola will become douches again and lock it? Is it even possible for them to do that, or do you guys have enough to make it so that even if they wanted to they couldn't unlock it?
I'm thinking of switching, but if their is a chance of Motorola saying "F You" and locking it again, I probably won't.
No, even if they do it doesn't matter once you unlock a device it can not be locked again

[Q]How will Google's acquisition of Motorola affect MoPho users and future devices?

How will the ownership of Motorola by Google affect us users?
I love my Photon, Google may have direct access to make things different for future Motorola Android Devices and Updates...
-----
My Motorola Mobile Android experience from Droid ×¹ to the HTC Evo to Photon:
Comming from a Droid X on Verizon, I have experienced most of the features of my MoPho with the latest gingy update. This hasn't been challenging and I love the features of the "axed" motoblur, (Edit: Motorola Applications Platform, not Motorola Desktop Interface), but I love my MoPho.
I previously had an Evo 4G, and I liked the UI, but hated the phone, with its unbearable internal storage, I got rid of it, and got my MoPho.
(I had my Droid X, Evo 4G, then Photon)

Well, back to my topic, , what do you all think this will do to us?
Is this a positive, negative, post your comments below...
Quick Question: Has anyone came from the Droid X, or Droid X², and what do you think?

If you look at the Nexus phones, they have easily unlockable bootloaders. True, they are developer phones. Google will be running the company separately, not taking over whole operations if i read correctly. I think a push toward unlocked bootloaders and sooner updates. I think a slow death to Blur, probably around when Ice Cream Sandwich comes. Flagship phone perhaps?

From the standpoint of rooting, google doesn't care about that, if they did would they let apps for root users in market ? I don'T think so. So you better forget that idea.
Now being a motorola/google phone owner, we should be much more optimistic than others about software. I personally think that google will take more care of us. Looking forward to see a Chrome OS instead of Weptop on our devices. officialy or unofficialy, i believe it will happen.

Root is at a software level while the bootloader is closer to a hardware level and requires access to the phone. Just clarifying that for people..

Yes, you are correct about the takeover, it will be ran as a separate company, as I have read, I will edit my post.
I wouln't say a slow death of blur, for our Photons, but that is quite possible for newer Motorola Android devices, but at the same time, Motorola may work with Google's android developers to make a better blur-esque UI. Who knows?
Remember, if all goes as reportedly planned, then Google has the Blur patent...

That would all depend on the cable provider as well, however most (if not all) cable companies offer just a cable card that I'm sure future Motorola cable boxes will accept, if you purchase the box from an official retailer. Though you'll of course at least have to have the tv service through satellite/cable provider.
The acquisition, though, makes me wonder if I should get the Photon, or keep using my X10 Mini Pro for a while to see what comes next

You would be absoutly correct, Google and Larry Page could care less about Motorola or a cell phone. What they do care about is the 6000 (or is it 16,000?) patents that Motorola owns! Right now, Apple is sueing everyone for infringements, thats getting read to change real fast!!!
I dont know if you guys know this, Motorola was around L-O-N-G before Sammy, HTC, Apple, Noika, all of them. They held all these patents but never really enforced them for whatever reason. If you remember, Apple went after Motorola with its Lawyer Goons with this Paten crap. I guess Motorola did not have the balls to fight, but Larry Page has bigger Goons! F**k, motorola has patent on the old bag phone of the late 80's! So if they every come back........
Correct - this is all about now owning patents.
Means little or nothing about current phones.

Lol you can put the photon on pretty much any carrier now. Atm I have my photon on page plus (verizon). I'm pretty sure boost is on the sprint network so 3g or 4g might work (as long as your boot loader is locked). To get on another cdma carrier all you got to do for the most part is flash alother prl.

I hope I'm wrong but I really doubt this will affect prior devices like the Photon, Atrix, etc.
I can imagine future devices having prompt updates, perhaps vanilla android, but seems unlikely they'd suddenly decide to move the ICS Q4 update to sooner out of the bottom of their hearts.
Guys, here is the most informative article I have read on the subject from AndroidPolice. This guy is a Law Student in California and explains the good and the bad of the marriage. Enjoy!

Expecting ICS sooner is unrealistic. Expecting unlocked bootloaders for existing phones so we can do it ourselves is another matter entirely.
As far as carrier approval goes, remember that there's a fundamental difference culturally between Motorola and Google. Motorola wouldn't even contemplate releasing an unlocker unless the carriers demanded and paid for it. Google will have its lawyers read the sales & maintenance contract it has with the carriers, and do it anyway as long as there's no clause in that contract explicitly prohibiting them from doing it.
In practical terms, that probably means Sprint and T-Mobile will have official unlockers within weeks, and AT&T & Verizon will never get them. However, I'll bet there will be some VERY interesting tidbits of info in the Sprint unlockers that might prove useful to someone at XDA trying to write one for a Verizon phone... ;-)

Petition: Starting 1/26/2013 Unlocking Your Phone Will Be Illegal

This should be pinned to every general section in this on this site.
Sign this petition to keep unlocking legal. https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/make-unlocking-cell-phones-legal/1g9KhZG7
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2414699,00.asp
Starting Saturday, it will be illegal for you to unlock your phone without permission from your wireless carrier.
The rule change dates back to an October decision from the Library of Congress's Copyright Office, which gave consumers a 90-day window to unlock their phones without carrier permission. That 90-day period, however, ends this weekend.
The Copyright Office reviews the rules on unlocking (and jailbreaking) every three years, as required by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). This time around, regulators found that "there are ample alternatives to circumvention. That is, the marketplace has evolved such that there is now a wide array of unlocked phone options available to consumers."
Some groups, however, had requested an exemption that would allow people to unlock their phones at will "because some devices sold by carriers are permanently locked and because unlocking policies contain restrictions and may not apply to all of a carrier's devices."
The Copyright Office, however, determined that "with respect to newly purchased phones, proponents had not satisfied their burden of showing adverse effects related to a technological protection measure."
That's likely because there are currently a variety of options when it comes to unlocking your phone. Verizon CDMA phones, for example, have unlocked SIM card slots. The 4G LTE Verizon iPhone 5 also includes an unlocked SIM. Last year, AT&T started allowing non-contract iPhone users to unlock their devices for use on other GSM networks. You can also opt to buy unlocked phones for a higher price.
Still, the Copyright Office recognized that it's not as easy to unlock an older phone as it is a newer one - "in part because an older or expired contract might not require the carrier to cooperate."
As a result, regulators gave consumers that 90-day window, starting Oct. 28, to unlock their phone without carrier permission. The move "is both warranted and unlikely to harm the market," the office concluded.
The unlocking issue differs from jailbreaking. In its same October ruling, regulators upheld rules that allow for jailbreaking, which allows you to run unapproved applications. Jailbreaking is most often mentioned in conjunction with the iPhone because Apple has strict control over which apps it allows into its App Store. If you jailbreak your device, you could run an app not available in the App Store on your iPhone, but the very act of jailbreaking voids your warranty, so you better know what you're doing.
The Copyright Office, however, declined to extend its jailbreaking rules to tablets because it found that the proposed definition of the device was too broad.
Wow. What has this world come to. That's a communist way of looking at electronics. I wish we knew more about what will happen if you have your carriers permission to unlock.
On a second reading, it looks like this only applies to unlocking the sim. It doesn't say bootloader...
Maybe we'll still be able to dev for these amazing devices

They are the government as they don't know a parsec is a measurement in distance and not time lol.
I really thought they would go for the ideal of building a death star. I mean come on it wastes money like the government seems to love to do. Plus all Americans could move in to it and then they could blow the earth up and take care of that pesky illegal immigration problem in one shot. Then we could be the ultimate power in the universe lol.

So, I've been doing some research on this, and there are a lot of misconceptions about this that need to be cleared up.
First, this seems to only apply to new phones sold after the effective date. Second, this by itself does not make unlocking a phone illegal. This decision simply states that the DMCA doesn't grant an automatic exemption to unlocking according to the interpretation of the Library of Congress, not that it's illegal. That means that the carriers can sue people for unlocking if they choose to do so, and it would then be up to the court to decide whether or not it's legal.
What would happen if it did go to court? The EFF would likely step forward to help the defense of the first defendant. Possibly other groups as well. The carriers and their industry groups would fund the prosecution. In the current legal landscape, it would likely be decided favor of the carriers, however, despite what you're reading, that hasn't actually been decided yet.

Why is fragmentation even a thing?

I'm sure there is some logical answer to this that someone can explain, but it is something that has been on my mind lately. Why do we even have fragmentation of Android on our devices? 4.4 just came out, and despite the rumors the chances we will ever go beyond 4.1.1 on our DNA without the use of ROMs is slim. This is because we have to wait for HTC to make the update, then Verizon to push it out.
But why don't we cut out Verizon? How about HTC, Samsung, Sony, etc push the updates directly to the device without Verizon? Maybe HTC has something like a HTC Device Manager that lets you select your device and OS, and shows you your version along with the latest with the option to update. It shouldn't be too hard... Apple does it. Even though I dislike iPhones, their updating structure is superior. Updating should be in the hands of the manufacture, not the carrier. That way only HTC is to blame.
It shouldn't be too hard for manufacturers to make updates for their devices since they should have people being paid to do such. Here on XDA we have a great community of people that seem to do more in their free time and it quicker than anyone employed by the manufacturer.
Last thing, Google can help with fragmentation by putting more features into the Playstore. A great example is the the Google Keyboard. Beforehand the only way to get it was on something like a Nexus, but now anyone can get it. Why can't Google put the new KitKat launcher and Dialer into the Playstore?
The reason Verizon pushes the update out of because they have contracts with the manufacturers. Verizon wants to make sure all its bloatware is in the rom and make sure everything is functional on the network. If HTC broke the contract Verizon would simply no longer carry the phone.

Exactly this. The Apple thing is moot. Apple is the only company who releases iOS, so Apple has the choice if they want their phone on that carrier. Android manufacturers are a dime a dozen, so they have to sign contracts and follow what the carrier wants to keep their devices on that carrier.
What is more devastating? No Samsung phones on a certain carrier, or no iOS? The carrier has a handful of android devices to choose from if one manufacturer drops. If Apple drops, there will be no more iOS on that carrier.
Sent from my dlx using xda app-developers app
If all phones that are able to run the latest version did get the upgraded version of android, you'd have less of an incentive to buy the latest phone coming out. Are the newest phones really THAT much better than the DNA? Verizon wants you to get a new phone.
As a rooted user and prefer aosp to sense, I'm pretty confident I'll have the latest version of android way past official updates. On my droid x, I had ICS shortly after gingerbread was officially released for it.

Getting the newest version of Android is the reason I root and load custom roms on my phone. When I buy a phone I know Verizon won't support it for long. I just wish Verizon would pick up a Nexus phone...

Verizon did pick up a nexus phone. The Galaxy Nexus, and it was just as bad about updates.

According to Google, the reason for no CDMA nexus devices has to do with CDMA requiring proprietary binaries. However, I wonder if it's more than that because as far as I know the Google Play Edition GS4 and HTC One aren't coming to Verizon either.

The Nexus 5 has CDMA support, but only on Sprint. It doesn't have support for Verizon's bands.

Hmmm... Didn't know that. Even more reason for me to believe there's something more to it. I think it may have something to do with Verizon's effort to keep the bootloaders on all its devices locked down like a chastity belt, whereas Google wants the devices to be for unlockable.

Why would it be illegal your not taking any paid apps or anything or breaking the law by doing what you want with your device.

You are thinking of the law about unlocking the Sim lock. Not unlocking the bootloader. Our DNA's are sim unlocked out of the box.
