There is a special version of Android Wifi Tether that now works on our phones. Check out this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19844251#post19844251

What's the difference between the built-in wifi hotspot app that Sprint gave me vs. rooting and installing the wifi tether program I found?
Pete
They gave you??
You normally have to pay per month for the Sprint hotspot. Wireless tether is free if rooted.
The app is on my phone. I tested it, and there was no warning about any potential cost, so it's free, no?

I wouldn't think so but who knows. Better check with Sprint first before taking the chance of racking up a huge bill. I think it is normally around $30/month for that feature.

OK, thanks. That make sense - otherwise, I could see no benefit to wifi tether.
I'll confirm it did not cost me anything to test and complain if it did!
has anyone confirmed this???
Mine does turn on and the only warning it gives is about battery. As soon as I turn it off though I get a mobile ip registration error on the phone.

I've been told that the built in WiFi hotspot is a monthly charge so if you don't want to pay for it you should definitely root your phone and use WiFi Tether. I would post a link but I'm not allowed so just Google "WiFi Tether beta" and go to the second result. Good luck!

You can root it and use barnacle, or use the hotspot feature under the "wireless and network settings" if AT&T hasn't disabled it. I was planning on getting one earlier today, but wasn't able to get to the store before work.
Check the settings and see if "Tethering & portable hotspot" feature is there. If it is it will just use your regular data plan.
Ok thanks im going to just wait for a root to come out.

When I picked up my phone at AT&T they asked me if I wanted the family (?) tether plan for $45/mo. I said no. When I checked the phone at home, the tether option was there, so is it cool to tether the phone without getting a nasty gram?

The moment you turn that on and start using it you will get a notice that you will need to change to that tether plan. Unless you get PDAnet or root the phone and use one of those apps.
I rooted , used Titanium Backup and froze tethering manager app, wifi tethering now works fine with my android tablet.

EDIT: Question answered while typing.

Any link to rooting the AT&T version? Want to root and use the built in tether. As of now, when you try to use the tether it will say you need to have the tether option. Don't want to pay the extra for using it a few times a month.

Yep, you're right. I just tried it.
I guess I root.
You need to root the phone and unintall the Tethering Manager in order to use the built-in tethering features without paying for it.
Just remember that a lot of people have been getting nastygrams from AT&T even without interference from tethering manager. There has been a lot of speculation as to the cause, but naive tethering is detectable in a number of ways, so don't be surprised if they suddenly decide to up your bill by $20.
Has anyone actually used Barnacle with this phone?
I rooted and installed Barnacle, which has to be downloaded from their site because it is blocked in Market. I start Barnacle and it has SU privilege, but no device can see the hotspot it creates. Even when I create the WiFi network there is no connection.
I'm having the same problem as far as my phone telling me I need a tethering plan. So I called At&t & they said I'd have to basically lose my grandfathered in plan of Unlimited just so I can surf the net for an extra $45 a mnth!! WTF!! I Didn't have this problem with my Cappy.. Wut to friggin do?? Can't root without Internet?? Someone please help a brother out!!

If you want to tether without paying for it, you have to root and freeze/remove tethering manager, or use a third-party app. Plus, you still risk AT&T slapping you with the overpriced tethering plan if they catch you. Not really sure there is anything you can do.
I figured as much. I never had a problem up til today when I got my new Gs2. I don't tether much at all to be honest with you. But at&t screwed me cause now I'm without Internet so I can't root even if I wanted to. I think I have no choice but to get a wireless Internet card til I root & find a decent ROM. Thanks a bunch for the advice though.. Much appreciated!!

Cappy users are getting nailed right and left, same for Infuse users.
I've been OK, but so far I've only tethered Android tablets (Galaxy Tab 10.1) in the past month or two.

Earlier this year I used the hotspot on my Dell Streak to tether my laptop for an entire week. Never heard anything from AT&T. It has a stock ROM from another region and is rooted. I haven't unloaded any stock apps on it.

You don't necessarily have to download it from their site. If you have a wifi connection you should be able to put the phone in airplane mode, turn on wifi, and connect that way. Either that or remove the sim card and get on wifi. As long as the sim is either removed or disabled and you are on wifi the market will not be filtered.
Maybe you're trying to connect devices to it that can either only see an infrastructure mode access point or are set to only connect to those. My laptop didn't see mine at first, but then I changed the setting in the wireless to show all types of connections (ad-hoc and infrastructure) and it worked. I had to actually modify the wifi_supplicant file on my moto Xoom for it to see ad-hoc connections.

This one worked perfectly for me and I didn't need to use SuperOneClick after loading it as it was already rooted. Go here.
I never had any issues or nasty-grams from AT&T for wifi tether, but I only used it when I needed too which honestly, wasn't too often.
Just wondering, has anybody been caught tethering using ATT and Barnacle wifi tether? I only use a couple hundred MB per month as is (on the unlimited plan), I'm just going on a short trip over the weekend and hoping I can tether to make things a little easier.
Thanks!
I hate to say this but everyone with Att is going to get caught for tethering if you do it. Its just a matter of time. Like I just got caught a week or two ago. I was doing it for almost 2 years.

Stop fear mongering! You yourself are not "everybody" so please speak for yourself and not everybody, you got caught (prob from APN or abuse). Not sure what method you were using but if it was custom APN of course your gonna get caught. With "WiFi Tether" app method the only way att is going to THINK you are tethering is if you continually have EXTREME data usage, and even then they have no proof and you can tell them to shove it. With "WiFi Tether" att cannot prove your tethering and they cannot remove the app from your phone. I use (and tether) between 1GB and 3GB data per month.

I used barnacle for around 2 years and I got caught. And I m not trying to scare people. Jeeez. I am only telling people facts. I have been keeping up with the you getting served thread. And that's where I got the answer. I even use the same data usage as you.

Found a tether that works great tethering from my non rooted SGII to the TFP
Its in the market for free called FoxFi
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.foxfi&hl=en
Enjoy
Awesome find, wish someone would have found this before when ICS first broke wifi tether, that being said this is the easiest way around that problem so far THANKS!
agree.. even for rooted phones it gets around the adhoc issue.. good find.. tested and connected with no issues.
damn, I've got an HTC Rezound.. guess we'll see how the bluetooth tethering works..
My TFP is unable to obtain a IP address using this on my Samsung Galaxy S.
And I can get it to tether with blutooth but I can't get online?
FoxFi updated today and allows blue tooth tethering now

Uninstalled and reinstalled and I am now surfing the net tethered to my ATT Samsung galaxy s. This is going to make the wife happy when we go on vacation, she will be able to surf the net on the 14 hr car ride. Wish I could do this with my iPhone.. I'm glad I kept my old Android phone.. Thanks for the post..
Do you think At&t can tell that I'm tethered? I still have all their bloatware on my phone.
Works great but I get redirected to Verizon's website to sign up for tethering. I was excited there for a bit.

Do you have a link to that thread? The app works on my E4GT but it also starts up the Sprint tethering service as well which worries me a little bit. Bluetooth tether also works but it is incredibly slow.

Whoa!
So yep, works 100% on an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 . NICE, since i just got the SG2, and was not quite ready to root yet (My HTC Inspire 4G WAS rooted, and I was trying to figure out a way around rooting yet, after just moving to the GS2)
This is great. By the way, AT&T usually won't notice (or call you out, in any event)using a Prime over tether as it's another Android device. Just keep the data to a reasonable level and you are good.
How long before this app gets taken down by pressure from the carriers, do you think? I would DL it RIGHT away, in any event, LOL!
Nice find OP. Thanks!

This is the app I've been using. All other apps that use wifi redirect verizon users to the verizon website (you know... so you can pay twice for your data).
Works GREAT for me, Galaxy S, At&t, Transformer Prime. Damn fine app, thanks Op !
Didn't work with my Droid X thru verizon..sucks though because i pay them enough money! Tethering should be included free with a 3 or maybe 5gb cap!!
