Transformer Prime Audio Quality Discussion - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hey guys,
Like many others, I’m very excited for the release of the TF2, and have been scouring the Net since it’s announcement some time back. A search didn’t show an existing thread for this topic of discussion, so I’ve started one (please move if needed, Mods )
For those that (eventually) get the TF2, I would like to ask/discuss – what is the audio quality when listening to music through ear/headphones? Is the DAC able to drive high quality cans? The reviews online so far (Engadget, Verve, etc) only touches on sound through the speaker, which doesn’t answer my question.
The TF1 has the amazing Wolfson DAC, of which supercurio managed to "unlock" with his Voodoo kernel. I know the TF2 has a different DAC (a Realtek I think) so things are uncertain at the moment.
Please share your thoughts/opinions within this thread
Thanks!

Can some of a lucky TFP owners play a couple of lossless tunes using a good quality cans and give us a verdict on SQ please?

I can definitely do this in a bit. I have some sennheiser RS160s that I really enjoy the audio quality of...they arent super audiophile material, but...
Lil money for nothing in FLAC coming up!

cant comment on losseless audio, only have 256kbs mp3s and i have to say that i am impressed with the sound quality im getting with my ipod earbuds....i actually think that it actually sounds better than my ipod with the same earbuds.
So hopefully, your going to be pleased with your music

So i just plugged my cans in for the first time.
First, and don't let this scare you, but there is TERRIBLE hiss and static when the prime has no audio output. I don't know why. When the prime kicks off any sound, notification, music, youtube, anything, you can almost hear a "click" and the hiss goes completely silent right before the output starts.
EDIT: this may be feedback from my cans not having any audio input.
I've listened to some FLAC samples and some 320kbps mp3s that were converted from FLAC for my phone. So far i'm pretty impressed.
Dire Straits - Money for Nothing - FLAC
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms - 320kbps MP3 from FLAC
Nickelback - Good times Gone (320kbps MP3)
Disturbed - Meaning of Life - 320kbps mp3 from FLAC
Loreena McKennit - Incantation - FLAC
I can't detect any flaws in the output. Dynamic range and detail i find to be at least on par with the capability of my RS160s...perhaps a slight "flatness" to mid-vocals, noticeable only with the loreena mckennitt track, upper range vocals are very crisp. Unfortunately i don't have any of my floorstanders wired up at the moment so that's about all the testing i can do.
I'll be curious to hear some impressions from someone with a better trained ear than myself.

Thanks. I was worried a little about the change because I heard Realtec sound chips several times and I have Realtec in my laptop and they sound really horrible (and I mean REALLY HORRIBLE, like an old radio) even if they state 100dB SNR in specification. I'll probably try connecting my USB sound card to transformer soon (just for fun), but it probably won't work.

Thanks a lot for your comments!
RS160s are wireless, right?
So that might explain the static!

It's actually Teg2 that had the Wolfson DAC. You might try looking for info on Teg3 to see if Nvidia's still using it. Or contact them and ask what DAC they're using in Teg3.

Using some Shure SE530 freebies from work. So far the audio quality has been good as long as the source material is up to par. Audio from streaming sources (google music) has been hit or miss.

I hear a very very slight hiss. Nothing unexpected though. And hiss does not follow volume level so I wouldn't worry about it.

Is the audio low in most YouTube videos on this tablet? I can barely hear most of the videos that I am streaming. Music plays nice and loud but videos don't.

With headphones or on the speaker? Using the built in speaker it can be a bit low depending on the video.
With headphones I can turn it up above my listening threshold.

I am no audiophile.
But, the external speaker on the prime is very loud and clear. It is not tinny unlike other tablets. The sound quality sounds really good with earbuds. I do not get a hiss at all. I tried plugging in the buds, turning volume to full, and played no audio and I do not hear a thing. I tried two different ear buds (Apple's ****, and some ****ty ones my dad gave me). I do not have the dock yet, but on my old TF101, I plugged my Turtle beaches in to listen to some FLAC audio files and they sounded good. I do not know if there will be a hiss with USB powered headphones.

Sounds pretty good to me.
Sounds quite neutral, it also seems to be a better analog interconnect. I got noticible hiss and crackles out of my tf101.
That being said , I wish there was a way to get LOD out of this.

Is your amp connected to the headphone socket of the prime?
Is it noisy while playing music? Or just when idle?
Does this noise depend on the volume level of the prime?

Hey all,
Thanks for the responses so far! I’m yet to get my hands on the Prime (Australia might only be getting stock in next week) so that’s a bummer.

Ah, I didn’t know that. The Prime teardown I found last month revealed the Realtek when I was looking around before. A google search today gives me this:

Wow really? has anyone else with a Prime have this problem?

The audio from headphones is nothing amazing but it doesnt suck either... It does have a hiss sound when no audio is playing which is rather lame..
Also if you have a usb hooked up to your computer you can hear your computers HDD clicking about in your headphones which is also kinda lame.

[Q] Speaker Sound Quality Issue?

Disclaimer: I did search in the forum and did not see this question asked or answered.
First off I LOVE my prime. I thought my only issue was really just a small amount of light bleed in one spot and I could live with that. So I synced my iTune music to my prime and cranked up a tune. To my surprise I noticed a rattling in the speaker that I had not noticed when playing games or watching movies. Thinking it was just a bad song I picked out one that I knew I purchased through iTunes that played great on an iPhone and other devices. Turned it on and though it is mostly ok you can hear distortion in the speaker even when the volume is turned up only 75%. Next I placed the Prime in the dock and the sound became somewhat hollow and the distortion was even more noticeable. It is interesting how the sound changes when placed in the dock. I removed the Prime from the dock and plugged it into the charging cable and the sound did not change as it did when docked. Just to be sure it was not my iTunes music I downloaded a free song from the Market and it performed the same as my iTune music with some distortion. With a headset, however, the music is great.
I have read where others compliment the sound from the speaker and say the dock makes it deeper and better in some ways. I don't expect this to be a high fidelity audio system but I didn't expect to hear the speaker have tones that rattled somewhat like a paper speaker with a small tear.
Just curious if anyone else has experienced this and it is normal or if I am the unlucky guy with a defective speaker. I am undecided on whether to: 1) exchange with Best Buy 2) RMA with Asus or just ignore it as I will normally use headphones if listening to music and alerts and games sound decent so far.
All input welcome.
I listen to alot of music on my prime and have never heard the speakers cracking...
I am also using an app to enhance the speakers (volume +) makes it a lot louder and less tin can like sounding.
Sorry to hear about your speakers crackling, does not sound normal. I don't have a dock so i cannot test what your talking about.

You are correct. I inadvertently posted this in the wrong place. I was bouncing between different forums trying to research. Is there a way to have a mod move it ? My apologies.
Well I am not sure what kind of audio you'd expect from mobile devices, but I would call myself kinda audiophil with a rather large home cinema system at home and the Prime is the first mobile device I own and the first I've seen (heard),
where I actually want to listen to music with it.
My Prime has outstanding speakers for that size. I totally love it. So maybe you got a broken speaker (it has actually stereo speakers, so maybe one is broken?)
Ah and I use Volume+ too raise the Volume.

Yea, start a great action film, put the prime next to a solid wall/thing/whatever, max out the volume and enjoy the brachial sound
Can't stress often enough how impressed I am by the sound Makes me sound like a super fanboy
Unfortunately, regardless the song at full volume my speaker sound over driven the way it is. When in the dock it also sound hollow. Definitely sound different in and out of the dock. Funny thing is I really don't hear the distortion with games or movies only songs.
I called Best Buy and they show them unavailable on their system and I didn't really want to return it to them anyway since it is otherwise great so I will test more and decide if I want to have Asus take a look at it at some point. If so I have a small spot of light bleed they can take care of. Either way I LOVE this device and truth be told I use earbuds or headset 80% of the time anyway. Just the fact that I want it right.
Thank you for the comments.

Legitimate Audio Upgrade of the S2

First off I take ZERO credit for this but after stumbling upon this on XDA today in another thread I searched high and dry and couldn't find a post about it specifically so I figured I'd post it here.
I know everyone is going bananas over the Beats thing recently and while it seems to be more an EQ than anything else I can tell you supercurio (who deserves the credit) made a nice gem for us.
For those in the know, Samsung screwed us S2 guys dropping the Wolfson chip for the Yamaha chip and it seems now Voodoo is available for the S2
I'm big into home audio (esp. headphones). I've tested so far on my ear buds (Denon AH-C560R) but most importantly my higher caliber headphones (Sennheiser HD600 and Denon AH-D7000) and this upgrade to the entire driver not only gives the headphones a higher volume output but also adds some "oomph"
It certainly has limitations as a phone compared to my other sources but it's a substantial improvement in not only sound quality but also volume.
There's NO distortion or clipping that I've noticed yet. I'm playing notorious culprit type tracks for that (hard trance/rap). Everything is a joy with this.
Once again kudos to supercurio for this and everyone else enjoy. Lastly, you NEED TO BE ROOT for this to work.
I'm running it on a custom ROM no problem (UnNamed)

EDIT: Author states $1.35 but you'd see it right in the app when you go to use it.

It's better than Volume+ in that you don't get distortion or clipping at high volume levels. That's the beauty of this program. I've been playing with a lot of higher-end headphone as I've mentioned above and there is a difference when switching to this audio driver.
It's certainly no high-end source (the S2) but it makes it more tolerable of a device than without it.
Just bought it, and it sounds great!

Cool but the description of this app is clear... no sound improvements just more db's.
Equalizer makes my music way way louder already and sound better too for free. I can't imagine it even louder.
As far as sound quality at high volumes, I have sennheiser ie7's and it sounds perfect, no distortion or clipping. Maybe equalizer app helps idk

Ah bummer. Although the sound through the dock isn't that bad
Purchased and tested- doesn't improve quality of sound, just overall decibels. Great for headphones, not necessary if you're using an amplifier.
Great find, could even help the hard of hearing...
just downloaded it, I like the added volume but I wasn't able to use the +6db (due to a bit of bass distortion) with my powerbeats listening to Drake. The +4db sounds amazing though, will definitely like the added volume while in the gym. Good recommendation!

I use it along with Player Pro and it sounds great.
yep, it did make a legitimate increase in volume. makes me love me S4 Reference's even more
Sounds fantastickness! Thank you very much for this find. Purchased and exploited.

Couldn't hear movies on airplane

I tried to watch a movie on the Prime the other day while on an airplane. I could not get the volume loud enough to hear the movie over the engine noise. What do y'all use to overcome this - noise cancelling headphones, headphone amplifier, or ?? I saw this amplifier on Amazon, would it do the job?
http://www.amazon.com/Fiio-E6-Headp...WWW8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332447629&sr=8-1
I had the same issue a couple of weeks ago. I could not hear on the plane even with my noise cancelling headphones. The volume simply was not loud enough to hear movies or play games. So I downloaded a volume booster off the market and it worked much better.
Were you using a pair of headphones? It can be hard for me to hear people talking at all when sitting that close to a running jet engine. I use a pair of etymotic ear buds (great noise isolation) when I want to watch a movie in a noisy environment.
I was using the ear buds that came with my Samsung android phone. They seal pretty well and have been fine for every other environment.
Just recently went flying with my prime for the first time. Using my Sennheiser over the ear headphones, which has excellent passive noise cancellation, max volume was just 'ok' for watching movies. Next time I fly I may try an app such as Volume+ to increase the volume further. For a reference, I normally have trouble listening to music/watching movies (while on a plane) with typical ear buds.
I had a similar issue when I flew with my Prime. There was just too much engine drone that it was difficult to hear the Prime. I has a couple of pairs of noise blocking earphones with me and my Apple in-ear earbuds (don't hit me) were the only ones that allowed me to hear my movies well.
I don't think this is a flaw with the Prime though.
I mean they wouldn't want to manufacture a device that output sound to known dangerous noise levels. Apple got into some trouble with that issue with their earlier model iPods which is why they now come with a built-in sound limiter.

I'm not sure this post is necessarily even Prime specific vs. listening to audio sources in general on an airplane, but the best for me is to use smaller earbud type active noise cancelling headphones (because I don't want to lug around massive Bose headphones while on a plane with a tiny carry-on). My Sennheiser CX300 earbuds, while they blocked some of the engine noise, were not good enough compared to the Audio Technica noise canceling ones I got.
Active noise canceling is ideal in environments where you have consistent ambient noise, like jet engine noise. It will actually analyze the background noise, and emit an inverse of the noise which cancels it out. It's not 100%, but based on my experience, it works better than any other headphones I've tried that are portable enough for airplane use.
Getting an amplifier is seriously going to annoy the passengers around you
Volume+ works great my friend. My speakers BLAST!

I had a similar problem travelling. Tried new ear buds - still bad. A friend suggested a FiiO amplifier. It is rechargeable, volume, equaliser. Unfortunately I had not tried Volume + so I'm not sure if I was just buying an expensive (~$30) solution.

Is it the same one I linked to in the OP? Did it work?
Instead of noise cancellation, look into noise isolation earbuds like Etymotics ER6i's. Been using these on various devices for over 5 years now, with fantastic success. I commute daily via train, thus enduring similar noise issues, and I actually turn my volume DOWN.
volume+ is the way to go. check the thread out in themes and apps section. its a true volume booster/amplifier. not some gloried equalizer like most on the market. just make sure to follow the apps built in instructions and follow tips from the thread. it allows you to boost external speaker, headphones, and BT headphones or speakers. I've been using for a couple months now. now my prime is so loud, I have to be asked to then it down. louder than the t.v. lmfao. plus clarity is excellent. not all muffled and you can increase the bass also.
I should have read the other thread more carefully first. After buying the app in the market, I saw you can get the full app free off the developers website.

I use an amp on planes with my prime and a500. I mainly use it I use a splitter so me and my girl can hear it. But it also serves as a good volume booster.
But if you use one get ready to have cords everywhere. Lol

Oh I know. I didn't come from a touchpad but remember I do have a N7.. Tegra DAC = Muddy uninspired dull crap.. The only time I use it for audio is in the car when I can run it through my head units EQ. The Wolfson DAC in the N10 is worth the price of admission alone. I was spoiled by it in the Nexus S for over two years. I just don't feel the audio needs any help and leave the EQs and magic elixirs at the door and let the music playback naturally.
So weird there is a similar thread on the N7 forum about the audio and the best thing to use for audio. I posted a similar post there..

You are right the default speaker output is flat. I don't use onboard speakers often but I'll look into it just to have ready for the times I do though. I've generally been weary of EQ and such with small speakers.. Always afraid even the smallest amount of bass will blow them

Yeah it makes weird sounds when you boost the 250 band too much, I left it way below the weird sound level as that scared me too, it can't play the lower frequencies at all so I doubt those will affect it though.

Poor sound quality

Using N6P for the last few days, N6P sound output from the headphone jack is poor, it gets loud but quality is lacking, N6P doesn’t even have the power to drive high efficiency headphones (high sensitivity (dbl/mW or dbl/W) and low impedance (ohms)), I listen on my Triple Fi 10 headphones (Input Sensitivity - 117dB/mW; Impedance - 32 ohms) and the sound quality is disappointing.
I am coming from N6, N6 has very good sound quality from the headphone jack, N6 has the power to drive my Triple Fi 10 and doesn’t need an Amp.
PhoneArena measured the N6 at .98 volts and the 6P is .34 volts, for comparison IP6+ is 1.014 volts
See below comments from Head-fi forum about the poor sound quality:
“The 6P's sound is extremely forward and punchy, but has a real digital grittiness to it. Almost like running through a preamp with the gain wound up too far, with a weird high mid resonance that eventually becomes fatiguing. The weird grit sort of reminds me of my motherboard's onboard Realtek sound, from circa mid-2000s. It feels like the frequency response is not flat at all, I'm expecting tests to show a big peak around high mids to low treble. It's kind of like listening on cheap earbuds.”
http://www.head-fi.org/t/785067/nexus-5x-and-6p-sound-quality/30
I hate to return N6P as I love the phone otherwise, but sound quality is very important to me as I listen to music a lot.
The 6p has so many strong points, wouldn't it be worth using a headphone amp instead of returning the entire thing? Obviously that won't solve audio quality, but investing in an iPod or a walkman isn't too bad when your then able to use IMO the best android phone of 2015...

I couldn't tell you the last time I plugged in headphones... No to wires!

Only use them on airplanes!
im very happy with my Nexus 6P and headphone jack sound quality with my vmoda headphones. I use poweramp to listen to music and used one of the apps preset equalizers, sound quality is great to me, I've also used it during phones calls and it sounds just fine.

Bluetooth is not there yet in terms of music quality, I have tried and returned 10 -12 bluetooth headphones in the last year including Jay bird x, they are no match to the good quality wired headsets like my Triple Fi 10, you won’t get any sound stage on Bluetooth headphones.
Sony’s new high resolution Bluetooth headphones are promising but it needs LDAC codec support on the phone, also these headphones are expensive at $399.
I wonder if someday we will see a pair of cans sporting USB-C with an inline Digital to Analog converter. There would be many benefits to this really. I could see a trackpad that supports gestures or scrobbling, etc.
I understand that as for high end audiophile one can spend thousands in the pursuit of audio bliss. But as for my common daily use my 6P with Viper and my JayBird X and Bose sounds is just fine:good::good::good:
Get poweramp and apply these settings.
People still use those headphone jacks? Hmmm... Interesting

Thanks for the suggestion, but software enhancements mostly ruins music experience, I prefer to listen the music the way musician intended to..
I used poweramp but prefer Neutron - the best music player on Android..

Real music you say? Lol so those with discerning ears don't use Bluetooth? #snobbery
If you wish to listen to music "as musicians intended" then you can only get inside their collective heads to hear it. Everything else is influenced and changed by acoustics, recording, engineering and production.

agree that 6p has many strong points, but amp defeats the portability, a premium phone ($700 - 128gb with tax) in 2015 should give a decent sound quality, what's the point of 128gb storage if it can't output decent sound.

the way you described is not possible, that's why you want to buy a device with better DAC and use good quality headphones and you can be as close as possible to the musicians intent..

you are not so bright, are you?
Why Bluetooth Audio Used To (and Still Largely) Sucks:
The problem with Bluetooth audio has always been digital compression: in order to send your audio to your headphones, you were forced to sacrifice quality. Traditionally, especially on older devices and with older Bluetooth versions, this meant the sound was so badly compressed that the result sounded robotic, buzzy, noisy, and all around awful. Listening to podcasts and spoken word through them wasn't a big deal, but when it came to music, they were just the worst. You got none of the richness or warmth of sound that a pair of wired headphones offers.
if you're the type who really enjoys listening—and I mean actively listening—to music on high-quality headphones, and you use terms like "soundstage" and "frequency response" to judge one pair of headphones over another, you may be disappointed, especially when you compare your wireless listening experience to a wired one.

My comment was not a flame. The difference is that I see all this as impossible for the very reasons I gave. Perhaps Steve Albini can make this clearer: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep05/articles/albini.htm
