If I power down it boots, starts loading, then reboots. not sure if that counts as a soft brick or not, but I've discovered a work around, if I re-root it using roloracer's instructions, and let it boot a few more times while plugged in, I can get it back, then I dare not cycle power. It's almost like a tethered jailbreak on the old iphone.
Anyway, I've been unsuccessful in finding anyone else mentioning this type of issue, so obviously it's never happened to anyone on the face of the planet before.
Does anyone have any links, search terms i may know have thought of, solutions?
I rooted a couple of weeks ago. Nothing is frozen, what I did freeze was on the list of thinks that were ok, and i un-froze it with TB.
Sorry, this is the AT&T Galaxy Note i717.
Thanks.
Do u have cwm? ? If so get into recovery and wipe cache see if that works post back ill help as much.as i can

I haven't installed cwm, nor anything beyond the rooting. I presume I should, then wipe the cache?
Install and flash clockwork mod recovery and then do a wipe BUT PLEASE make sure u have a back up before u do any wipes and changing Roms and such

yes. I've now installed CWM and did a backup there, a rather lengthy one, as far as time goes.
I wiped the cache, with no positive effect. I ultimately wiped the dalvik cache, and now i simply get the AT&T boot screen. So I am now restoring my cwm backup, hoping at least I'll be back where I was.
As it stands now, or before I wiped the dalvik cache, which you did not mention so that may well be my error, I was in a loop. unable to connect via USB for any length of time. BUT I additionally have everything backed up, as far as apps, settings and my data seperately of the cwm backup.
I am considering trying the odin unroot process.
later that day:
I had to get some sleep I was falling asleep at my laptop. I reinstalled cwm, using the touch one here earlier this morning, I again wiped the cache, it still looped, I did another backup in cwm, then went to bed with it plugged in beside me after about 30 minutes I saw it was done, and I rebooted it, and left it, it rebooted once maybe more, but when I got up later it was up.
I'd intended to do all this today, but I accidentally had the power button resting on my finger and that began this early morning session. I have a phone back, but will wait before I intentionally cycle power again. I do have a number of flashes counted today that weren't there yesterday. i'll see about zeroing those out later.
In download mode it doesn't boot loop, so I do not think it's a hardware issue. But at least now it's up long enough to back it all up to my PC.
Thanks very much
that is cool
Man, being over 50 I can barely make out those image verifications!
So no one else has run across this with mashi/roloracer root? I did it exactly as it said to to a stock i717.
I'm going to wait to cycle power again, to test if it's fixed, when I know I will have a few hours to dedicate to trying to get it all back. I'd rather have it rooted and when an ICS ROM is out try that. Like I said I'm a complete android noob, but not to Unix/AIX/Linux, PC's or Macs. I had to do macs because no one else wanted to back in the `90's when apple was failing.
So is this a "soft brick" this boot looping?
Thanks again.

Well, it's still acting kind of like a tethered boot. It takes a few hours of it cycling power, plugging in/ unplugging and suddenly it 'decides' to stay up. No one else has reported this issue that I have found. I've uninstalled several apps I suspected, like 'The Weather Channel', and anything else I can find that runs in the background by itself, that I don't need... It does it everytime I power down... so I never let it get below 5% before I run to plug it in... Battery life is kind of sucky anyway.
My PC healed itself regarding seeing the phone MTP style.
I wipe the cache, re-root it ala mashi/roloracer then it'll start to settle down some. Curious about UNrooting it, but not real clear on how that's done, as most instructions are in shorthand leaving out (to me) an obvious step here and there.
I'd rather have it rooted, I've bought titanium backup, and use a few others utils that require root.
If I installed a different ROM that might help... or might not... I'm fairly certain it's not the phone, at least not a 'short' type thing where it reboots on it's own... I SAY reboot, it's actually not rebooting since it doesn't show the samsung and at&t logo, it just reloads the UI.
Point me anywhere and thanks again. I clicked the 'thanky' button.

I know someone will eventually tell me to do a search, but I have and can't make any sense of most of the so called guides. What I have been finding is for the international version, or some generic crap that don't really help me. My phone is stuck on the Samsung logo when you try and power it on. I really need to fix this!!! I did SIM unlock it, rooted it, and installed OnlyOne ICS because I got tired of waiting for slow a$$ ATT to get the ICS update out. Anyhow, the phone worked great for 2 months and now this morning it kept saying, blah blah has crashed, etc. So I rebooted the phone and lord behold, the stupid thing won't work anymore. The only thing I can do with it is hold the power button and down volume button to get to the "Odin Mode". Other then that, the phone is useless. I would love to find some guide that is more specific on fixing this problem? Maybe I over looked one, but I am at work and don't have the time to search thru hundreds of threads, etc. I will when I get home, but really need to fix the phone ASAP since I use it for work too. Any info would be awesome.
I think your talking about Download mode.

If you can get into download mode (odin mode) just flash the attstock Rom to unroot.
Go to rootgalaxynote.com and click the upper right hand corner where it says uroot and follow the directions. Works great for me used it multiple times.

I do appreciate the quick responses, but I'm about to head out and will try to re-flash it later. I am just concerned about the data / pictures, etc I have on the phone itself. I know I can pull the 16gb sd card I have and it will be safe, but if I use the ODIN way to re-flash to stock, will it erase all my content I have? I thank god I have a MyTouch 4g as a backup, but all my work related stuff is on my Note, so I am really up a creek right now without it.

If you unroot all of the data stays on your note. No worries. Good luck
Just one thing, when you unroot and it is finished the att logo will come up with the "rethink possible" after that just go into Samsung recovery and reboot from there.
It doesn't say that on the website.

I was on beta 4 but I also got into clockwork mod and fixed permissions & cleared cache. Then went and flashed the new rom, hoping my data and installed apps would still work. Well my phone is working great again. Thanks for the info and keep up the good work!

And quite happy for your success.
So... I have FJ Mod on my note. Things have been running great for a long time. Then a few days a go, out of the blue, google voice was constantly crashing. Then the gapps process. Then it got ridiculous and everything would crash. Then I noticed that when I restart, it saves nothing that I had done. For instance, my call log, text messages, moved icons on my homepage.
I did a wipe in CWM, and everything came back the exact same. Still the same problem, icons still in the wrong place... no idea whats going on.
Has anyone got any advice for me? I was going to try and put a new ROM on later if worse comes to worse, but as is, this is very frustrating. I often have to restart my phone just to use the browser, or message, or anything really. I am just hoping that my internal SD isn't screwed some how and now allowing me to write to it. I haven't done any changes. I don't even believe I have downloaded any apps since a week or so prior to this issue.
Flashing with ODIN did not good either. I tried to revert back to stock. It uploaded with no issues apparently, and then when it rebooted I was back in ICS with everything as it was... argh.
Find one of the the ics leaka one click Odin packages and run that. Should wipe everything, and then you just have to flash cwm and root again.

Well, I tried something similar with a rogers stock rom. Booted up Odin, connected to issues. Uploaded/transferred no issues. Figured I'd be on stock Gingerbread upon bootup, but it was ICS! I've done this and similar on multiple phones, not sure whats happening. I will try again with a different rom as you suggested tonight.

I had the EXACT problem, out of the blue as well. I didn't have the other stated problems in your OP but I did have the one quoted above. First voice , then a few google apps(gmail, drive, etc). The apps would hang for a few 1-2 minutes (felt like hours) and the phone including capacitive buttons became unresponsive and couldn't do anything with the phone. The "wait" or "ok" buttons on the force close popup were not clickable.. It sorted itself out in a few days and boy did it drive me NUTS. I was afraid to post up here in fear people would think I was nuts and did something myself to make things go so awry. I was convinced I myself was nuts.. im by no means daft when it comes to android dev/tinkering lol. Very strange

Well I was impatient and tried 2 different roms right away. Neither worked. Odin showed "pass", no errors. Then it does its auto-restart and bam, back where I was. Not having the best of luck with this right now.
Any other ideas would be appreciated!

LOL I actually waited a few days before posting here too. I was hoping that maybe uninstalling and reinstalling some, or updated, or clearing cache and all that would help. As you can see, it did nothing. Heck, after I restart my updates didnt even stick and Google Play is trying to download them again!
Well... still no luck.
Here is another thing I noticed. When I hook up the note to my PC, and look at it, I cannot access my external SD. Furthermore, I had a file on my internal SD that I deleted. When I restarted my phone the file was back. Yet in windows it removed without error. I have no idea what is happening at all.
And now its reading it again........ Ive literally been sitting here trying a bunch of different ways to fix this. Playing around in CWM, trying ODIN including a couple 1 click solutions. The one starts writing to NAND, then stops and gives me an error.
Try taking out your sd card and running it for a while. First note i got was acting that way from the get go. Took it back and got a new one. It started doing the same thing. Finally took out sd card and ran great. Card was going bad. I had replaced the 8 gb stock card with the 16 gb one i had in another phone and apparently the mote didn't like it.

Did you, by any chance, install a custom kernal? IIRC, one of them messed with the mount points. By far, the only way to fix your issue immediately will involve restoring to stock through ODIN, then rerooting and reflashing CWM. This will 100% mark your Note as either defective, or prove that it's a problem in another area. However, I don't believe your problem is with your SD Card, unless you've been using an app like apps2sd.
If you're weary about doing this, try to reflash CWM, or TWRP to figure out if it's something going on with the recovery partition and/or settings. I'm no expert, but the only thing I'm aware of that sticks around through a wipe, and multiple flashes are our recovery, our internal SD files (possible), and sometimes the modem. Also, the one click leaks include a not loader, which could prevent you from restoring a GB Nandroid.
By flashing CWM, then TWRP, then CWM again, or sticking with TWRP, you at least knock out one variable...and by reformatting your internal SD, you ensure no resources are sticking around.
Edit:are you using TiBu to backup and restore/migrate after a flash? Verify your backups under the batch lost.
What could be happening, is you're restoring data in CWM, or TiBu, or w/e ap you're using, and then the Google account sync restore is restoring your settings, and replacing the desired ones, or vice versa.
Edit again: Which launcher are you using? Which utilities do you use? What are your main root apps?
The backup verify is a must...but some launchers will scoot icons out of the way. If you're having a touch screen issue, or an S Pen issue, you could be draggn items around when you're not aware of it.
I'll see this through. You've caught my interest.

Also, tap USB utilities in settings, by the other FJ mods, and tap the selection there, then check to see if you can find your SD card through your PC.
In addition to the above, you can also enter the "Tools" section of FJmods, and disable ad blocking, remove touchwiz UI, s voice, etcetera, and return ALL settings too default, and remove all extras. You can reflash recovery there too.
How are you trying to reformat your SD card?

I had installed a custom kernel on Gingerbread before, but obviously that was replaced with the one I used with FJmod. It had been operating fine for over a month.
Also, I removed my SD Card, and tried everything without it. I have tried restoring gingerbread stock and ICS stock through both ODIN and CWM. Even formatting through CWM does nothing as when I restart I am back to normal.
As for root, I only had 2-3 programs with access. ES File Manager/Task manager, and I tried one called Lucky Patcher (I will verify this evening). All of these had been on for at least a week prior to all this beginning.
I havent been using TiBu for anything at all actually.
The launcher I am using at the moment is Nova.
Other than that, I am going to try a few of your suggestions once I am done work. I will post my results tonight!
Thanks for the suggestions and info, greatly appreciated.
EDIT: Just to be clear. I am formatting then restarting and all my apps, icon placements and wallpaper return. Even my call history is stuck up to the 13th and erases recent calls. I am also trying to revert to stock ICS and Gingerbread through both ODIN and CWM. After it is done installing through ODIN and reboots, I return to the way my phone was before. Same with CWM. After flashing through CWM I return right back to the way it was. I am not doing any restoring or anything. I have done this plenty of times in the past before. The only thing I can possibly imagine at this point is that my SD is somehow stuck on read only. Yet it is weird because again, I can delete files and apps (and even windows shows them as gone), but after a restart they are all back! I can remove apps, but they are still in the app menu too.... I can even run them lol (even after deleting their folder). The phone is stuck in stasis.
All of this just happened one day out of the blue. No new apps (for at least a week) too.
I have a GTab that had the EXACT same symptoms.. turns out it's internal flash memory was bad, not the microSD. going for broke I opened it up and desoldered the flash memory IC and it uses the microSD now as its primary storage. If even after a stock reflash you have problems I hope you have warranty.

Great... lol! I have a warranty, but no one will work with it due to the fact I have a custom rom. Am I maybe contacting the wrong people? I contacted Rogers and they said they couldn't help me. No sir. I tried stock gingerbread and ics. I've tried custom roms. I've tried just erasing it too! Tried Odin and CWM. I am going to try and change recovery today again too.

Well its currently stuck on FJ Mod (which I think is a great rom), and then it just started acting up. I cannot restore Gingerbread stock, or ICS stock, or anything else. ODIN and CWM both show completed on my attempts, but upon reboot my device is back exactly where it left off on the 13th.
I picked up the S3 and I like it, but I miss my note badly
Hi Everyone,
This is my wife's phone, so i'm not very familar with it. She handed it to me today saying to won't boot. If connected to a charger, the screen would come on saying "RDS protocol starting..." and "Battery too low to flash".
After doing a little research her, I asked her if it had asked to do an update. She said yes, but that she's been hitting "no". So i guess it's been asking her for a while. I'm assuming she either hit yes, or it went ahead and did a force install anyway.
I took it to Sprint and they told me there was nothing they could do but replace it, which they have ordered the replacement, but that they cannot recovery anything from the internal memory (pictures, contacts, etc). So all I need to do is get the phone working enough to get data off of it, if at all possible.
The phone has NEVER been rooted. The bootloader is NOT unlocked. She's never let me touch it before.
I have no idea what version it was on (think it was 2.3.4) nor what version the OTA was trying to install.
I recharged the battery a little using a usb cable with the end cutoff and attached the red/black wires to the +/- pins. (about 30 mins or so). The "Battery too low to flash' message is gone and the phone is recognized in RDS Lite (good sign I hope).
Can I just flash "1FF-sunfire-user-2.3.4-4.5.1A-1_SUN-154_5-CM-release-keys-signed-Sprint-US.zip" to it using RDS Lite? Or should I use a later version like 198_7? I downloaded the 154_5 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20331570&postcount=3)
I eagerly await a helping hand.
Thanks,
EB

Thanks.. looking forward to hearing from you. All I really need is to be able to get pictures and contacts off of it.. and perhaps SMS history. I don't care if any of the services work, since Sprint is sending us a replacement phone.

Contacts are synced to googles servers, so that's not a problem. As far as pictures, were they on the sd card or internal phone storage? If on sdcard, just put the card in a card reader on a laptop or pc. Or you may be able to install bootstrap recovery and mount either internal or sdcard. Or, if you were on 2.3.4, flashing any of those sbfs will work.
You can block the update by changing a line in the buildprop. But that would require being rooted. Id sbf then do the update immediately after since she obviously doesn't care about root or unlock.
Thanks.. I'm sure the pictures are on the internal sdcard. It's the pictures taken by the camera over the past few months. I already have older ones copied to my PC.
peetr_ sent me a custom sbf for an unlocked bootloader + twrp. I'll try that when I get home to see if i can get into that way. (Thanks peetr_)
I'll keep everyone posted.
What line in the build.prop file do I change?

Can't remember ill try to find out for ya.
HUGE thanks to peetr_ for all the help he gave me. I managed to get it booted into Electrify and saved everything I needed. *whew*
I now believe the whole issue was not a failed update, but a sticky volume button that's causing it to go to RSD mode. Whenever I power it down, then backup, it always goes direct to RSD mode. But then I can pull the battery, put it back in.. then hit the non-volume side of the phone against the heel of my hand (fairly hard) 5 or 6 times, then power it on, and it boots normally. Then while it's running, I'll see the volumne adjust up and down randomly.
Then if i reboot it, it's back to the RSD mode.
It doesn't work every time, but I've managed to boot it several times like that.
Hi all,
I have picked up a Fascinate to play around with. I have flashed CM10 onto a Nook Color, love it, and would like to do the same to this Samsung.
If there is an RTFM, please point me to it, and I won't bother you all anymore.
Issue is...I go into recovery in order to do a reset/wipe data. The Samsung logo appears, I get the menu, and then the phone just shuts off. Am I dealing with a hardware issue, or did the person I got it from mess up a flash?
How can I tell if this phone can work again? Any help appreciated. I could start the downloads and see if I can just flash away, but I was hoping someone could save me the effort by verifying that this is a hardware issue, rather than a screwed up OS.
Thanks in advance...Eric

Sounds like a messed up phone. Shouldn't you be able to wipe data from Android though?

The closest I got was scrolling down to that option, selecting it, then getting confirmation, pressing volume up, and then the phone shut off. It seems like every time I pull the battery out and try again, it lasts for a different time. It's never at the same exact time. I'm going to rip it open and clean it up.
Thanks for the reply.
Thought about returning to stock through odin and manually flashing cwm? I'll have the necessary files and programs if you want to go that route.
