So I have a wifi flyer from bb.
I have not rooted, but I probably will in the future.
Should I root before upgrading to honeycomb or after?
Obviously rooting before will be done by globotron's method.
Is there even an established method for rooting if already upgraded to honeycomb?
no root before globatrons method but you would have to s off
there is no dirrect s off as of yet for honeycomb hboot so root would not be possible with OTA until s off is available or HTC DEV has it supproted with unlock
Gotcha I think...
So if I want to guarantee s-off and thus root, I should use globotron's method right?
If you want root and s off now, yes. Globatrons method is stock release with root an s off
If updating by Globatron's method, will future, periodic updates still be received from HTC? Is it possible for HTC to detect s-off/rooted devices and ignore or blacklist them?
I would not attempt an ota while s off. All updates would come from xda threads

So, I got my HTC Thunderbolt, rooted it, then unrooted it.
Would I be able to install the official MR2 OTA update from "Settings" then reroot my phone? I heard once installing this OTA update, rooting wasn't possible.
Or would I have to go an alternate route of rooting, then flashing an MR2 based ROM?
I'm completely lost, as I'm coming from a Droid X.
Also, what is this MR2.5 I'm hearing about? Is this just a leaked future OTA update?
Thanks in advance!
You could upgrade then root using the current method, but there's no point as it will downgrade you. If you want the OTA and root just root you phone, then flash the radio through hboot and a rooted version of the OTA ROM through recovery.
That's the MR2.5 update. hm, since it's a leak, it might not be 100% stable, correct?
Also, how often is that rooted version of the OTA ROM updated? It's not updated very frequently, is it? Is it just updated when a new OTA update comes out?
No, that's the "Official OTA MR2 Radio". Meaning the one that was pushed out via official over the air update, I've been running it since it dropped, not a single reboot (everyone's experience it different). You are correct on the ROM, only updated when HTC/VZW drop and update.
So, I just rooted my phone. Now I flash the MR2 update, and then the rooted version of the OTA ROM and I'll be good to go?
Why do I even need the rooted version of the OTA ROM? Is that so it'll be able to support the MR2 update?
No, there are many ROMs that support the MR2 radio. Check out the developement section, it will usually say in the OP what radio works with a given ROM. You mentioned updating then rooting so I assumed you wanted to use the OTA. You know what happens when you assume.
So the ROM you directed me to is pretty much stock? Nothing removed, nothing added?
It is debloated and has superuser and busybox (for root access). This one only has superuser and busybox (no bloat removed).
I know this might be stupid... I am sure I am already answering my own question but I want to be safe . Basically, I just bought a 3D it's completely rooted. I rooted it while it was Hboot verion 1.30. Basically I want to know is it okay to update the Hboot? Do I have to find it through forums or can I update it through the phone updates? I have had plenty of experience with other Android devices. (Here's the stupid part) But, I am just curious if it will wipe my root if I update my Hboot to the latest version? I am just curious if the 3D is any different compared to some of the other Android devices I have previously owned.
Thanks in advance!

Updating *only* the hboot image will not remove the su binary loaded on the /system partition to provide root. Updating the hboot to the latest version, right now, will mean you can *only* remove the internal memory write protection through htc's unlock tool as revolutionary hasn't released support for the latest hboot.
My personal opinion, I don't think it is worth updating the hboot at this point.
Hope that answers your question!
I imagine this has been posted, but I can't seem to find it when using search on the main forum.
I just received my GB View today and rooted it via Revolutionary. My question is, can I just go ahead and update to HC or will it break root?
Question 2 is: Can I OTA or do I need to install it through CWM if so?
Thank you in advance to anyone who replies.
Don't ever install an OTA on any rooted Android device. You will lose root or get stuck in a bootloop.
Use globatron's method.

Hi.
I got my prime a few days ago and would like it rooted so that I can use more of my favourite apps.
I've read lots of posts on the topic but they are written by members who have been following the development of unlocking/rooting methods and they reference too many conditions/methods/techniques that I'm not sure about because I'm a noob to the prime and ICS scene.
I am aware that I can unlock my prime's bootloader but I had my fingers burned doing this with my Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc; it left me unable to use OTA updates and I could have rooted without it (which was all I wanted).
So, can I root my Prime without unlocking the bootloader?
And just to complicate things a little more I'm using ICS 9.4.2.21...
If there is already a detailed guide to this then my apologies, I couldn't find it so please point me that way. If there isn't one maybe someone would be kind enough to fill me in on the basics and bring me up to speed on the current state of play?
Thanks for any help in advance
Yes, you are correct. Unlocking the Prime WOULD VOID THE WARRENTY, and you would also not be able to use the OTA updates.
Rooting WILL BE possible (hopefully). We used to be able to root the older versions, but ASUS "plugged" the exploit. We have to wait till they find a new exploit and then we will be able to root the prime....If it works like the earlier mods, you will need to use Voodo Rootkeeper after rooting, because the next update will probably get rid of the root and will need that app to re-establlish the root.
You will be able to use Ota updates after rooting, as long as you don't change any of the "delivered" files...If you change some, you will need to restore the originals before updating.....or the update will fail.

Yes. It is possible to root a Prime without unlocking it's bootloader, if it's running any version other than the .21 (The one you have).
I rooted my Prime when I got it (Honeycomb came preinstalled), and now I'm running ICS .21 version, bootloader locked and I'm rooted.
But sadly, for your situation, there isn't any way to achieve root without unlocking the bootloader.
If you unlock your bootloader, you can't take OTA's (As far as I've heard, as it results in hardbricks and failures).
If you want to have root at the moment, you will have to unlock your bootloader using ASUS's official tool, and then flash CWM, and flash a ROM that is pre-rooted, which will then also give you root.

Bugger! But thanks guys, I guess I'll just have to be patient. One of the main reasons I root is to use ad blocking apps. Does anyone know of an add blocker that doesn't need root access?

As root blocking apps access the hosts file within the root directory it's nigh impossible to block ads without access, For website ad blocking you can use chrome or firefox addons
I understand that a root exploit for the xs is not available without having a unlocked bootloader. And that people don't want to work on or create because with the release of ics coming soon it will be patched. But what I was wondering if it was even possible to have for 2.3.7 or if anyone has attempted to figure it out. Even if one was released now wouldn't a new way would have to be released anyways for ics. The whole is it possible to root a locked bootloader question has been asked over and over without a definitive reason why it can't not be done and I just think it would be a good thread of an explanation why so this question is asked 100 more times or even discussing progress of an exploit attempt.
