Simple enough:
1:: download the .zip
2:: rename it (using ES File Explorer or Astro or any ROOT EXPLORER that will allow you to MOUNT SYSTEM AS WRITABLE) by simply cutting out the description so that it is just bootanimation.zip
3:: copy or cut the bootanimation.zip and paste it in the system/media folder or data/local
4:: you will be warned that the merge will overwrite the existing file and that the world will end (not really, just accept the merge)

Looks awesome. Will be trying later today. Thanks!

thanks, enjoy!

To anyone who wants to save their current animation in case they wanna go back. Just use something like root explorer to make a copy of the bootanimation.zip that u already had in system/media
And paste the copy on ir sdcard for safekeeping
Ill be checking this one(and all the others I see in ur sig...wow lol)) later ....thanks

you can also just drop this in the data/local folder and your current boot animation will remain untouched in system/media

Yup ..that too
I was speaking more for the system media folder
I had noticed it worked that way when I had changed it b4 using root tools...

You can also change the ending to .bak instead of .zip and it can stay in the media folder.

Yea
When I tried that when.using root tools tho it deleted my stock animation ...
Copying the zip is fool proof

For some reason it only plays once instead of repeating until the phone boots. Is that normal?

I was just going to ask that I went into the boot animation desc.txt file but none of my edits will save I have my root enabled as well as write permissions so I can change things in es files explorer any info on how to make it continue to loop would be great.

The file is already written to loop. Not sure why it isn't...does it just go through once then go black?

out of curiosity, for those who aren't getting the loop, did you put the zip in system/media or data/local? I rechecked the files and the loop is scripted. Haven't had any issues with anybody running it on Bionic...

Removed the rotation on the Atrix 4G logo. Added some starglow with some shimmer. Reduced file size by half for faster, less choppy playback.
Made it in AE. 20 FPS.
Just overwrite the one in your /system/media directory. Set permissions to match original.

WOW!!! NICE!
Thanks, hopefully I can get the file size down without killing the quality.
And make the text 3D.
I am trying to get this on my phone but it says cannot paste here because the file system is a read-only. And I cant rename the current bootanimation.zip. Can I use CWM recovery to install this or will this be available as an option later?

If youre using root explorer than you will need to make the directory youre pasting to read/write. there is a button on the top of root explorer that toggle r/w and r/o. once in r/w you can paste and change permissions.

It may be because of that 3rd party app, not sure how it works and it may conflict with these. If you haven't uninstalled that app I would do so then try this again.

link
The link appears to be broken, does anyone else have the .zip?
Edit: works, awesome thx
this is by far my favorite boot animation, thanks so much for this
i have two questions though, one a lot of times when booting up the animation can lag slightly, is there any tweaks i can do to improve the performance or is this generally how it goes for everyone?
my other question is more of a request actually, I would like the version that you had mentioned that did not have the spinning 3d letters, is that still available somewhere? i didn't see a link
I assume it's because it's loading stuff in the background.
Edit: I just installed it, and yeah, it is noticeable. You can clearly tell where the AT&T Logo is supposed to display because it gets real smooth.
But if you look at the original loader, its noticeable that its also laggy. It's just less because there isn't much to look at. It's like if the Windows 7 boot animation lagged, you can't really notice since there is almost no noticeable difference between frames.
OMG I LOEV YOU NOTACH!! you've answered my prayers! now to dl and try this out
edit: wow looks beautiful man good job!!! still a bit laggy initially i wonder if there are some tweaks i can do
edit2: second and third boots were much faster, but still a bit choppy

Boot animation: [Might not work]

Hey everyone, I'm posting this so you all can see if Bootanimations work on the nook tablet *aside from that abysmal stock animation* so let's move on, shall we?
Instructions:
What you need to do is just download, rename to bootanimation.zip and push to /data/local/
you can do this by either using adb
Code:
adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local/
or by using a file explorer.
Bootanimation
There are 2 choices.
Code:
Thundercats
Transformers (decepticon)
[size=5] Download: [/size]

[URL="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15069134/bootanimations/thundercatsbootanimation.zip"]Thundercats[/URL]
Added a second bootanimation to the thread.
I tried, but no luck. A couple things i noticed. One, my bootanimation file lives in /system/bin, second, i'm not sure how to match the permissions. The original file's permissions are rwxr-xr-x, third(ly) i also tried dropping the .zip extension as it's not on the original file.
Let me know what i'm doing wrong, or anything else you'd like me to try. Thanks indirect, for all your work!

WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT TOUCH THE bootanimation Binary File in /system/bin!!! This is the Executable that RUNS a boot animation.... copy over that file and boot animations will cease to function until it is restored to the original file.
Yeah, i realized what it was after some experimenting. So i restored it, and tried indirect's instructions exactly, but no luck.

You know on my phone, the location of the bootanimation.zip is in the /system/media folder. Maybe try dropping it there?
Yeah, try pushing it to system/media
We might need to put it in the framework-res if this doesnt work. :/

Put it in system/media and i got NO starting animation at all (which gave me a bit of a scare for a moment until the unlock screen came on) . But by having NO animation, that means its doing SOMETHING.

Hi, is there a way to turn off boot animation...I it takes about 5 minutes for my nook tablet to load...kind of annoying when you need to do something quickly.
Thanks so much!

I have the ROM toolbox app which has the ability to automatically change the boot animation, but I am not sure if I can use the application without messing up the tablet.

The 5 minute bootup is not affected by the bootanimation at all. The boot animation actually completes fairly early, and becomes a static image until the end of the bootup.
Also, the Nook Tablet uses a special /system/bin/bootanimation which, while recognizing custom bootanimations, fails to actually draw them to the screen. Thus, you end up with a black screen for those ~5 minutes while the boot process is going. It took me a long time to realize that I hadn't bricked my nook to figure that out.
The only bootanimation that works is stored in the /system/framework/framework-res.apk file, which can be tricky to modify, and update correctly. The snowball-mod root that I wrote has a custom bootanimation, but that's just more a side effect of fixing the white-on-white problem, (if you've already hacked one PNG in the file, hacking a few more isn't particularly hard.)
Oh ok thank you for the info. I appreciate it

Was anyone able to get their boot animation changed from stock at this time. It would be nice to have something that doesn't promote BN. This thread just kind of fell to the wayside.
Thanks...
Gave it a try. It did something. Went from the Read Forever screen to black untill it finished booting. I think its a start. Tried the Thunder Cats file.

anyone try using 7-ZIP to drag/drop/replace similar-sized images into the original bootanimatoon.zip? I had some luck doing that on my intercept. I guess it preserves the original sig/align or something.
You have to change the animation in framework-res.apk since that's where B&N use theirs. The normal android way won't work here.

Okay, so I've done lots of reading and tried lots of different things but cant seem to customize my bootanimation. I was trying to get the android piss on apple one, so I downloaded the zip file, put it on my sd card, then moved it to system/media and renamed it bootanimation.zip. This did not work, from everything I read it says this is what to do. I also tried to put it in data/local and it didnt work. I am running the newest version of eclipse rom does this make a difference? Now my phone is not playing any boot animation since i wrote over the eclipse one. any help is appreciated! THANKS!

hmm, still not working, do this just to the zip file? Maybe I have a bad download? I tried a couple other boot animations and none of them are working though. I think I deleted something else in that folder that said boot animation (something) it wasnt a zip file i forgot what kind it was. can an app or something block it from happening?
In the stock /system/media you should see two items, /audio and bootanimation.zip. you need to take your new boot animation and move it to your /system/media. Rename the old animation "bootanimation.zip.bak" and rename the new one "bootanimation.zip" set permissions and reboot.

Could someone please post a zip file of the stock boot animation. Would really appreciate it. Cheers

Here. This recovery flashable zip can be used for multi purpose. In this instance It's packaged with the Droid DNA boot animations including the HTC bootdown. If you want to remove the HTC bootdown then you can simply "open" the zip I have provided (open not extract) by using 7zip which is free to download while you're inside the zip, navigate to system/customize/resource and you will see both animations in there. Delete downanimation.zip if all you want is the Droid bootanimation.
From here if you do get bored of the Droid animation then you could put any other compatible bootanimation.zip and it will change it as long as you don't change the spelling. It has to be bootanimation.zip you can also add any apk file (apps) you have by navigating to system/app placing the apk file in this loacation. Saves a lot of time if you don't want to stuff around with a root explorer. Close the zip after you're done and there you have it.

I think it's going to depend on which ROM you're running as to what sound file is needed. For Viper ROM it is the system/customize/resource/htc_boot.mp3. I would suggest looking at the Permissions of the mp3 file. start out setting them to rw- r-- r--.
Let me know if this works out for you. I've thought about doing some boot ani's with sound, but haven't had time to try yet.

Actually it looks like it may have more to do with the naming of the folders within the boot animation. I'm downloading Virtuous ROM now to take a look at how their boot animation is setup.
If you have an XML Editor you can look in /system/customize/CID/default.xml. about 3/4 of the way through the file there is a section that lists which files are used for boot up and boot down.
For instance here is what it says in the default.xml from the stock rooted dna rom:
-<BootConfiguration><BootAnimation audiostart="vzw" audio="/system/customize/resource/Droid_DLX_Eye_Animation_Sound_Design_9.21.12.mp3" animation="/system/customize/resource/vzw_bootup.zip"/></BootConfiguration>-<ShutdownConfiguration><ShutdownAnimation fps="10" image="" image_png="/system/customize/resource/hTC_downanimation.zip"/></ShutdownConfiguration>
Notice the audiostart="vzw". If you look in the desc.txt file within the stock boot animation file it looks like this:
1080 1920 30
p 1 15 android
p 1 30 vzw
Here is a quick description of each row in the desc.txt file:
1080 1920 30 >> 1080x1920 Resolution, 30 Frames p/Sec as Default
p 1 15 android >> 1st part uses the images in the android folder and repeats them 1 time, then pauses for 15 seconds
p 1 30 vzw >> 2nd part uses the images in the vzw folder and repeats them 1 time, then pauses for 30 seconds. The folder vzw also triggers the boot animation sound as noted in the default.xml snippet above.
I hope this helps.

In Viper ROM it lists the audio file, but there is no audiostart tag, so I wonder if it just starts playing audio when the boot animation begins
Here is the default.xml snippet from Viper ROM:
-<BootConfiguration><BootAnimation audio="/system/customize/resource/htc_boot.mp3" animation="/system/customize/resource/bootanimation.zip"/></BootConfiguration>-<ShutdownConfiguration><ShutdownAnimation fps="10" image="" image_png="/system/customize/resource/downanimation.zip"/></ShutdownConfiguration>

Actually it looks like it may have more to do with the naming of the folders within the boot animation. I'm downloading Virtuous ROM now to take a look at how their boot animation is setup.
If you have an XML Editor you can look in /system/customize/CID/default.xml. about 3/4 of the way through the file there is a section that lists which files are used for boot up and boot down.
For instance here is what it says in the default.xml from the stock rooted dna rom:
-<BootConfiguration><BootAnimation audiostart="vzw" audio="/system/customize/resource/Droid_DLX_Eye_Animation_Sound_Design_9.21.12.mp3" animation="/system/customize/resource/vzw_bootup.zip"/></BootConfiguration>-<ShutdownConfiguration><ShutdownAnimation fps="10" image="" image_png="/system/customize/resource/hTC_downanimation.zip"/></ShutdownConfiguration>
Notice the audiostart="vzw". If you look in the desc.txt file within the stock boot animation file it looks like this:
1080 1920 30
p 1 15 android
p 1 30 vzw
Here is a quick description of each row in the desc.txt file:
1080 1920 30 >> 1080x1920 Resolution, 30 Frames p/Sec as Default
p 1 15 android >> 1st part uses the images in the android folder and repeats them 1 time, then pauses for 15 seconds

I hope this helps.

Nice eye bro, it works now like I mentioned but now this gives me more to work with when I go and play with 'Boot Animation Factory' and who knows I might come up with some good animations myself? lol:thumbup:
