Is it possible to install liberty3 from rom tool box? I changed the boot animation through the tool box and it worked just fine. not sure about the whole rom tho??????? If possible any help is appreciated. DX2 running the latest version 2.3.4 . Never installed a rom before this seems to be the easiest way to do it

Whoah, calm down. The X2 forums are far from the most populated. Be patient and a reply will come.
ROM Toolbox can do all the stuff, but ultimately it is just an added step to doing it the old fashioned was through the Sys Recovery menu. that is by far the simplest and easiest.
Bootstrap recovery is the best way to flash a rom just don't forget to wipe data/factory restore, cache partition and also dalvec cache under advanced mode. I woild not reccomend using rom toolbox since our phone is not fully supported by rom toolbox.
Cool thx guys for ur response. I will give it a shot.....
If you go to the development page and the first thread by booked you can get the download for bootstrap recovery and also the liberty3 zip. Also if you want tbe SD card flip flop and battery jump fix I would reccomend flashing those as well.
Eclipse 1.3 already has the SD card flip flop. Just flash those zips after the rom zip is complete. Everything you need is in that thread It is awesome he keeps that up for our benefit!

Sorry one last thing unless its to late. Before you flash anything do a backup in the bootstrap recovery. That way you can always restore back if things go bad.

You can't install ROMs via ROM Toolbox since the Droid X2 boots into a different recovery than ClockworkMod. As far as I know, the best way to install a ROM is by install the SystemRecovery apk and booting into recovery that way. Then wipe data and flash. There are more thorough directions in the Development forum.
Basically, yes I is 'technically' possible, but like sdube said... because the DX2 uses a different recovery it won't work. If you tried it all you would see is it download, then attempt to install and afterwards, asking your to restart. It would just turn off and on and nothing would most likely happen.
Best way to do it is with SystemRecovery; which is also easy to do.

I recently rooted my phone and flashed the TWRP recovery for it as it was recommended on IRC. One of my favorite apps when I had my rooted 4G was Rom Manager. It allowed me to easily backup and flash roms whenever I pleased.
Is there something similar to that for TWRP? Rom Manager requires having Clockwork Mod recovery to use. Also what are the advantages / disadvantages if any to either recovery?
Sent from my Evo 3D using XDA Premium App
I like doing everything manually from recovery myself. The advantages of TWRP of CWM is the ease of access of certain options in the menus. I love having the wipe cache and dalvik cache as an option in the install zip menu. You can also change the theme easily. I like the backup options in the Nandroid menu and the fact that it backs up your wimax partition. There are many advantages in TWRP over CWM imo. It is designed for the Evo 3D natively and CWM is a port, so it's options are not designed for the Evo 3D. TWRP is just laid out better and you don't have to scroll through the work no 8 times just to wipe cache. Rom Manager is nice, but even when I did use CWM on my NS4G, I never, ever used the app because I just feel safer doing things manually.
All this is a matter of opinion, so it ultimately is up to you. Maybe the ultimate and best reason to shoose TWRP over CWM is because when you go into the Wipe Menu there is a roll of toilet paper in the background.
There working on something similar to rom manager
Instead of making a new thread ill go ahead and ask here. I'm currently doing a Titanium Backup of my apps / data. I'm also going to do a nandroid backup using TWRP since I've decided to dive into a rom. Are there any other recommended steps I should take before I flash? I hear talk of kernals but know nothing about them.
*Edit
To be more de specific this is the rom I plan on using.
[ROM][8-21-11][2.3.4] gbsense-e3d-deck [0.5]
I read in his thread there was only 2 kernals for 2.3.4, stock and another custom that's floating around.
Sent from my Evo 3D using XDA Premium App
If you are going to a 2.3.4 Rom I would stick with the stock kernel that comes with the Rom for now. Until HTC releases the source for the 2.3.4 kernel we won't have any custom kernels to flash. I would suggest searching here and on Google what is a Linux kernel and what benefits a custom kernel can give you in Android.
Also, if you flash an incompatible kernel it will at least break things like wifi, sms, mms and other functions of the phone and at most completely make your phone unbootable and you will have to nandroid restore.

So in other words i can just flash this Rom and i'm good to go.
Yep. The Rom's always include a kernel. If you want a custom kernel, that is a separate flash. Some Rom's include a custom kernel and some include stock kernels. I will say that I am using a Rom based off the HTC 2.3.4 update and has the stock kernel and it is actually very smooth and runs fast. I really am not sure overclocking is necessary on this phone, especially after all of the Sprint and HTC bloat are taken out. Though I can understand why people want and do overclock, but seriously benchmarks don't mean shiz to me. How the phone runs in real time use and how the battery performs are my greatest concerns.
I had the same question as the OP. It looks like i won't be using rom manager. Can you point me to a step-by-step on rom flashing using TWRP? Thanks. All google searches seem to return flashing "how to's" using CWM Rec.

curious about this too, i've searched here and googled with no luck. everything i find only explains step by step with rom manager/clockwork
i'm assuming you just enter recovery, select install zip -> choose zip to flash -> select your custom rom.zip from the list and then let it do it's thing.
just want to be sure so hopefully someone can confirm or post proper steps.

Assuming you already have S-OFF you just need this file http://www.techerrata.com/android/twrp/PG86IMG-twrp-shooter-1.0.3.zip
*Download flashable zip from the OP and rename it "PG86IMG.zip" (without the quotes)
*Place in the root of the sdcard
*Power off phone (make sure you turn off hot boot or pull the battery when it's off)
*Power on the phone holding power and volume down
*Follow the prompts to flash it
*Delete .zip (PG86IMG.zip) after booting
*Enjoy

Hi All,
Just got my S2 last week. Planning to move to CM7 this weekend. I have rooted the device and am on the Codeworkx kernel. I had a few questions:
1. Is there a problem while flashing via Odin if Debugging is not enabled (I think it is more of a OS feature which we haven't entered when in download mode, so shouldn't matter according to me.) ? I tried to disable debugging, and then went to download mode and Odin did detect the phone, but I did not try to flash anything so if anyone has tried that, your input is more than welcome.
2. The reason for above question is: What if I completely brick my phone (with debugging disabled) and no ROM .zip in the sd storage, how do I get the phone up and running ? I understand that I can flash kernels via Odin, but is it true for ROMs as well ?
3. What's the issue with ROM manager ? Is it recommended to stay away from it for S2 ? I have tried to do a Nandroid backup and it always takes me to the Android robot with a exclamation mark screen. Then I have to reboot and the backup magically restarts and completes successfully. Most people have suggested to use CWM recovery directly, so not sure if I should get rid of the ROM manager altogether.
That should be all for now. I have a jig ready by the way, so am not that worried about the process and plan to do a fair bit of reading before proceeding, however, the answers to above queries would be really great !
Thanks in advance,
Ish
I can answer some of your doubts.
I don't know if you can flash via odin in case you don't have the usb debuggin enabled so I'm not going to say anything about it.
Anyway if something happens to your phone and you dont have any ROM on your sd card but you have CWM recovery installed (which is almost everytime the case) then in CWM there is a mount usb stoage option. With it you can easily transfer .zip ROM files to flash, or even a nandroid backup you saved in your PC.
ABout ROM manager, this is what I suggest you. The first time you flash CM7 don't use ROM Manager (I even tried using it with the codeworkx kernel with no luck). Now, once you are in CM7 it works perfectly and it's really helpful to flash nightlies withouth wiping data (I flash half the nightlies as they are realeased). So the first time you flash CM7 wipe everything (do a nandroid backup first), even wipe /system, /data, cache partition, dalvik cache, so you don't have any problems. THen install zip from sd card and when it finish install the zip file again (just two installs in a row no wiping in beween, trust me, the first time I tried I didn't do that and couldn't boot the phone).
Hope it helps.
EDIT: You can flash stock ROM via odin, there is a thread by infratech were this is explained and you have a list of downloable stock ROMS you can flash with Odin, these are region and carrier specific and you probably will get the one for your carrier. I found the stock ROM for my carrier and I'm from chile, you shouldn't have any problems with that. Well, good luck, CM7 is by far the best ROM I've flashed.
Oh another thing, go for the latest nightly since the battery life is incredibly improved over the RC (or was it stable?) version.
Thanks !

Awesome ! This is exactly what I was looking for. I haven't dived into all the options of the CWM, so didn't know that this feature existed.
Also, many thanks for explaining most of the things in a single concise post, it was very helpful. I'll have to check the ROM flash with Odin, so I will search for that thread and have a go through it later today.
Once I get a hang of CM7, I'll go in for the nightlies as well. And yes, I did read about the CM7 guys revert the status to an RC because of the bugs reported, so will give it a try once I definitely know what I'm getting into .
Thanks again,
Ish.

Hi, I am looking around for a ROM to install on a friends device and I noticed that the only tutorial I found for this phone is with the BootManager. Does that mean that is the only way to flash a new ROM?
Can I just install CWM through fastboot and install a ROM through recovery?
Do I need to unlock the bootloader on this device?
Thanks in advance. Sorry for the stupid questions but I have never had a Motorola device and am not familiar with the procedures.

The bootloader on the Motorola RAZR is not unlockable.
I've flashed custom ROMs using both SafeStrap and BootMenu (my favourite is BootMenu, here's a link for more info on it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720351)
The neat thing about the RAZR is that it can be dual-booted using either of these recoveries. I am running both Eclipse ICS and stock Blur.
The most well known ROM for RAZR is probably Eclipse. If you have the GSM model, you'll need a patch or ported version. There are also ported alphas of CM9, 10 and AOKP.
Let me know if you have more questions or want some more links

Thanks for the response.
So, is SafeStrap and BootMenu a custom recovery, or do I still install CWM or TWRP?
Do you have any experience with the CM10 or AOKP ports? If so, are they at all stable?

SafeStrap and BootMenu are both CWM-based recoveries; they're all you need to flash. I prefer BootMenu, though it was a bit more complex to set up (Eclipse wasn't flashing in SafeStrap for some reason so that's when I started trying BootMenu). BootMenu lets you select which ROM to boot upon powering on the device (stock or the second one you flashed, alternatively you can flash your new ROM on top of the stock system but I don't see why you would), or boot into recovery. If you're really used to basic CWM I'd go for SafeStrap unless otherwise needed though.
I've tried both CM10 and the AOKP JB ROM (these flashed perfectly fine in SafeStrap). The camera doesn't work and apparently deep sleep doesn't either. It wasn't friendly on battery in my experience. I had trouble with data, too (this may have been my APN settings... But at the time I hadn't even tried playing with those because I didn't figure that was my problem). Wiping the cache partition and dalvik cache allowed data every so often on the next boot, but then apps started acting up (likely because of the dalvik wipe) until another reboot... which killed the data again :silly: The general consensus is that data works though. But overall, I wouldn't try it just yet unless you make sure it's installed on your second system and not flashed over your stock one.

I can't say enough good things about Eclipse. Try that if you want. Incredibly stable and all main features are working - fantastic modified AOSP look too. It's my daily driver
Original Eclipse CDMA page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1795493
GSM patches in case that applies to you (the FULL Eclipse port is towards the bottom, ready to flash without patching): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1805380
Oh, and finally, SafeStrap recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847599
Just make sure you enable Safe System in recovery and you can go flash-happy without any worry! Disabling Safe System puts you right back to stock (you can re-enable Safe System to go back into the ROM you have installed on there).
So yeah, that's about it! Check out the links; everything you need to know should be in them, and I'll try to help more if you need! Have fun
Edit: CM10 port entered beta today (AOKP port disappeared from the page?). Camera is working as well as other little features; still no deep sleep.
Kind of hard to navigate for an answer right now because the last few times I've tried the search tool on here it's said it's not working right now so I figured this would be the best way to get an answer. It seems a lot of the guides I've seen cover older builds, but I haven't seen any with details for the new Aroma Installer. Currently I'm using a deblurred GB ROM with CWM-based Recovery v5.0.2.3-photon2.
I'm assuming first (after backups of course) I need Jokers recovery, but I'm not seeing downloads anywhere now since Jokers site is down.
Then I'm assuming I just need to use install zip from sdcard to run full-wipe, aroma_prep, aroma-2.56.
Then I use Aroma to install the ROM with the options file?
After the ROM has installed and started I assume I'll have to reset the APNs like on GB so I can get MMS back.
Is there any other things I need to do or am I wrong about installation method?
JB builds are being maintained by t3hbill and he isn't using aroma. Also, no need to full wipe. Just dalvik/cache, flash over current and fix permissions. I used twrp 2.2.0 and haven't had any issues. Then again, remember to backup in recovery just in case anything goes wrong.

you're using the wrong recovery. that one is well outdated and doesn't work. check out my site for download links to the recoveries (use the mirror links for jokers). all versions available are posted. TWRP, photon3 and both of jokers V3 and V4. i use the classic photon3 recovery. works perfectly. http://www.motosunfire.com/clockworkmod-recovery/
to install the rom. find the rom. flash it. flash gapps. reboot. add your apn's. (always wipe cache, data, system when changing roms to ensure a good clean install)
I've only entered my APNs once. I get MMS. And doesn't Joker's v4 recovery have a problem flashing Gapps? (Personally I use TWRP. Love it.)
I don't recommend keeping \data from GB to JB. When I did that going from GB to CM9, it boot looped. Had to start fresh.
Starting fresh isn't as bad as it sounds. Get on WiFi and put the time in to get it set how you like it. Personally, I'm a little lazy -- if I set something up one way, and later it bothers me, I'm not always up for going in and changing it. But if I start fresh? It's gonna be done how I most currently like it. Also keep up with the latest and greatest apps on blogs like Android and Me, Android Police, whatever you like, replace apps you've been using, maybe with something better. I've been using FBReader loyally for about 2 years. I just switched to Fabrik (the one that uses Dropbox to sync your place in the book). The interface could use work, but the app is literally days old. For that it's good. With all this flashing I do it's the only way I can see keeping a place in a book, and it's free. I'm not trying to plug it, it's just an example. Also switched from QuickOffice to Kingsoft Office (latter is totally free). Again, fresh start, fresh perspective. And fresh perspective, you enjoy your device more. Feels newer.
Hi,
I am trying to root a second T959 phone, my wife's, but am not having much luck. It is currently running Froyo 2.2 w/ KB5.
I tried using AIO Toolbox to root, but that did not work. The first problem I encountered is that it complained that 'verification failed' when I tried to reinstall package.
I searched through the forums, and found that I have recovery 3e. Noticed that on the recovery menu too. So I did what this thread indicated:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423&highlight=root+3e
Ran the install.bat, and it did its work. I was still not able to apply the update.zip, but I was able to run 'SuperOneClick' to root the phone, or I thought. SuperOneClick reports that I have rooted the phone, but none of the apps think so. So right now, I am still stuck, with a phone that I cannot root.
I found this other thread talking about using ODIN to flash in a CWM instead of using recovery. I am a bit hesitant about this, as I am worried about flashing anything at this point without a backup.
I realize that I could ODIN to stock and I would be able to root and upgrade ROMs without problems, but I would really like to backup using Titanium before doing so.
Maybe I missed something somewhere, but is there a way that I can root this phone on the current fw?
Solved
Ok, found this thread with further searching, and it solved my problem.
Phone rooted and upgraded to JB! Woohoo!

You don't need a computer to flash a ROM. Find a ROM you like, I recommend a JB ROM as they are supported, anything prior will not be. Download the ROM zip and gapps zip if required. Use a root file app, I use root browser, and move the zips from
sdcard/download to sdcard. Boot to recovery, wipe cache, advanced>wipe dalvik cache, wipe data/factory reset, install zip from SD, install ROM then install gapps, reboot and profit!
*you might have to flash the ROM more than once as it has to update recoveries and partitions.
