how about also shrinking it to size of athena and when bac in use makes it same size. would make it pocketable though
i dont know if any one is fammiliar with the company called incase...
they have great cases for iphone.. hard rubber silicon. I hope they can come out with something like that for athena....
or most phones.
My family own a plastic manufacturing company in middle east. i might have to check with them to see about manufacturing some accessories....

Or do what the rest of us Athena Owners have done, get yourself a
"Tuff as Nuts" case.. Much better build quality.

HOW MUCH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First, there has got to be a slick docking station similar the one for OQO 2. Lan port, 3 usb, optical drive, vga out, PCMIA slot, and throw in a big ass battery to charge the Shift from when the onboard goes dry. Long trips you can bring the docking/charing station. A shoulder bag for this would be great as well, 7" screen isn;t going to fit in the pocket so nicely, but a minimal stylish shoulder bag could work pretty well.
Of course, accessories won't matter if nonbody buys it cause the GPS and voice are disabled Really, without GPS, voice, and the ability for both OS's to access all the storage resources you are going to have to carry a phone anyway so why would you buy this and not a cheap mini-laptop for half as much?
For in-car use
a car charger
a car cradle
case
how bout a hard case with a flat bottom and holes for vents and ports on sides so its usuable on lap, and solar panel not so much to get it 12volts id have to cover the whole screen and even then id tske hours to chage like 6 or 7 so id basically be usuless in less u sit outside in bright sun all day and dont want to see anything in less it flipped up that might work then i block sun out too to cut black glare,
a bigger internal battery
i would love..
a battery around 4000 ma even with a bigger cover.
...maybe an official upgrade of wm side, by paying the full licence but with a good implementation of qualcom grafic drivers
finaly.. if ppctechs could provide a 256 ram update , plus a micro sd slot . they can do it
I believe HTC Shift will have probably a short life cycle... As this is their first "rather mature" product of this kind. They are surveying the market, know the design flaws and specification mitakes. The next one should be now specified at 80% already.
I'm confident we will see lot of improvements on the device itself (but this is not the topic of this thread). Let's focus on accessories as this is also a weak area when comes to HTC Shift offer. From HTC, I just see the following:
- Extended Battery (for heavy user and because... this is a great margin generator. ).
- Docking Station (more USB ports, VGA output, Ethernet).
Third party manufacturers can take care of the rest (Car Craddle/Charger, Cases, ...) but they will do it only if the next product has good sales or benefits from strong HTC support. Due to short HTC SHift life cycle, I dont think HTC is pushing hard for having partners making accessories.
We know, we know. Better wifi/gps. But what else?
On my list would be:
Battery/energy performance improvements - When I watched the tegra 3 videos for months before it came out I expected a steep increase in battery life performance over my tf101. Although the processor is faster - the battery life is about the same as my tf101, if not slightly worse. 28nm tegra 4 SoC's may improve this - but when I say improvements I want real improvements, not just what apple did with the ipad 3, improve the tablet but not the battery, just put a bigger battery in instead.
GPU improvements over display improvements - This is sort of related to the first improvement. I still fail to see the need for a 1080p+ screen on such a small device. It's a battery killer and 720p is sufficient, maybe a little more would be nice, but what's more important is the gpu. I see the need for a faster gpu, gaming is still in the ps2 / xbox phase - we need to jump up to current day graphics. I can live happily with a 720p display with more battery life and better graphics capabilities.
Less bezel. Self explanatory.
Ability to add folder shortcuts to the homescreen in the stock file manager. This is an essential feature.
More RAM. Even the crappiest netbooks on the market are upgradeable to 4gb, a little more wouldn't hurt.
USB on tablet. An edge the tfp has over the ipad is memory expansion. There is cloud software available - but weening mobile users off of usb isn't going to happen any time soon.
And most importantly...
Production. Asus won't let themselves succeed, they always second guess their products and then on release they are impossible to obtain. Preorders on both the tf101 and prime were backed up for weeks if not months. Asus, manufacturer more than enough to meet the demands of consumers because it's embarrassing when apple can move 3m ipads in 3 days but you can't make a hundred thousand in 3 months. If you can't meet demand - your sales won't increase.
I'm hoping next generation of Asus tablets after infinity pad will have Tegra4 in it. that will be even greater battery life and a dramatic boost in CPU and GPU performance. ill be holding on to my prime till then. nothing I've seen out from the competition makes me want to get rid of the Prime or seem more powerful than it. but honestly I get great battery life on my prime considering how much I use it and the kind of games and emulators I'm running on it. I easily get 10hrs. + battery life. Some may think this battery life not good enough but its the best Android has right now. Prime has the longest lasting battery of any tablet out now. according to Asus own specs, prime will still have better battery life than the Infinity pad or the new 300. the 300 actually has the shortest battery life, I believe. I could be wrong. but I know prime has the longest lasting battery life of all Asus tablets out now or coming out! that's been announced
Quality test the mess out of their next device, if any problem is spotted via web browsing, opening apps, connecting it to a larger TV monitor. Then they need to hold off until releasing it until they get it resolved.
The Transformer Prime should have shipped with all issues ironed out. So the consumer don't have to deal with these issues. Apple does this for it's iphone and iPad, ASUS should have done this or the Transformer Prime.
Default file manager is not perfect. Would love to see improvements aka incorporate what ES and Astro have been doing for a long time.
Better Inputs. The microSD card sticking out is stupid. Just make it more recessed. Same for the Audio jack, only half of it is in, the rest is exposed. Some times I drop audio in one ear, not sure, but I bet its due to this.
Better default features for lockscreen.
Speaker placement, maybe we need two speakers? The location is not great.
Keyboard keys on dock feel cheap. they are light, but when the battery already weighs what it weighs, just give me nicer keys.
WTF. How could ASUS let those chargers out of the factory. If they are plugged in one way, and you hold your tablet, it gives you a fuzzy jolt!
The tilting mechanism of the tablet on the dock kinda makes the tablet fall backwards when open. all the weight of the device is right at the back... it falls backwards all the time for me.
The build quality of the dock. If you pick it up from the side where the tablet docks, the underside metal bows & will make a clicking sound for me. The four rubber circles on the bottom of the dock aren't even! If i set my docked tablet on the table, it will still slide around cuz only 2 rubbers are on the counter.
I would always be happier with more RAM
I would like a better ASUS manager, which CRASHES all the time.
The screen bulging is annoying.
Its bad, the list can go on and on.

Yeap, the tf300/infinity have less battery life from the slide I saw a while back. I don't know why it's that way for the tf300, it should be on par with the tf101 and prime. The tf700 is more obvious, and is one of the reasons I think the 1080p+ screens are a step backwards for mobile devices. But the 4g is also to blame, for shorter battery life. I can't blame asus for that - carriers won't touch the wifi only prime, so with mobile data plans available to the tf700 it will help revenue. At least they won't have to market crappy galaxy tabs or xooms anymore.
The best option in my opinion is a 4g hotspot from clearwire, unlimited data for $45 a month, doesn't drain your tablet battery, you can charge it off the dock in your bag while you use your tablet separately, and it works for more than one device.
Tegra 4 isn't going to impact tablets as much as it will impact netbooks. The 8 core batman version of wayne will be for ultrabooks/netbooks and the robin version will be for tablets & phones. If you've paid any attention to netbooks lately - they're still lacking in the cpu and graphics department, and amd/intel are the big contenders in that department - which is why nvidia has alot to gain by offering an energy efficient 8 core ARM SoC for windows 8 netbooks.
Nvidia is moving forward from taking AMD on in the graphics department and hitting them where it will hurt in the cpu market. And everyone knows intel atom processors are complete ****, so x86/x32 on ultrabooks/netbooks may become a thing of the past if Nvidia can pull this off.

I forgot to mention the microsd card in OP, glad you posted that.
Completely agree on the headphone jack, when I plug my headphones in and put my tablet in my bookbag the headphone connector shimmys it's way out and the audio cuts. It's only been doing this recently though. My fix was to just put the tablet in my bag with the jack facing down so the weight of the tablet keeps it in, not worried about my cables because they are Kevlar reinforced with a slanted jack.
I think speakers on mobile devices are a lost cause to be honest. Laptop speakers have sucked for years and they've had far more room to work with than tablets do. I won't ever be pleased with the speakers on a phone/tablet/laptop until I can hear the subbass frequencies that only my 12 inch sub or pricey beyerdynamic headphones can provide. Which is why my inner audiophile will say it's better just to go out and buy a nice set of headphones if audio quality is a concern.
Chiclet keys are a bit on the annoying side, but they're still usable. I just wish the tablet wasn't so much thicker than the dock, I wish they were even, perhaps cram some extra batteries or speakers in there.
Two words above all else;
Quality Control
Do not release buggy products, test the features you plan to advertise well in advance of the actual product release.
After that?
More RAM. 2 GB minimum. 4 would be better. And worth paying for.
Next up, 16/32 is a fine size to choose from for ROM (on board storage). I bought a 64 GB Prime and have used 8GB. I download apps extensively and never uninstall or delete anything. Maybe I'm missing something here, I don't do much video or take a lot of pics, or have a lot of audio files on my tablet. OTOH, I have a 32gb micro SD card in the dock (with adapter), and would be perfectly content putting pics, movies, short vids, etc, on there.
To the OP, the current bezel is fine. If you never take it out of the dock I could see wanting a smaller bezel, but part of the appeal of the Transformer series is that you CAN take it out of the dock. And when you do remove it, the current size of bezel means you can handle it easily (even with my large hands) without pressing the screen and opening/closing all sorts of apps.
The one physical layout of the Prime that I would change is that there is a button or control or cable plugin on each of the 4 sides.
This means that you have no where to rest if it is charging and you have an audio cable plugged in while you hold it to do something like play a game. I would put the audio plug, volume controls, HDMI plug, and power button all on one side. Leave the USB/Charging port where it is for convenience of keyboard docking. This means you have a short side and a long side that you can choose to rest on the table while playing a game, and you don't have to fight the cables or be concerned about setting the tablet on the power or volume buttons (and either messing up your volume or, worse yet, turning the power off) while doing so.
Edit:
I also forgot about the MicroSD slot. Leaving the (expensive) card half way out to be pressed by random objects and fired across the room by the ejection spring is a very, very poor design decision. If you insist on keeping the curve of the tablet shell put a "half moon" indentation in the shell to allow pressing the fully recessed MicroSD card in for release.

You think iPhone's and iPad's don't have issues of there own? Nothing is perfect. iPhone 4s even with the new antennae design it still has the death grip issue. The new iPad, Yellow-ish tinted screens, overheating, poor wifi.
Lots of things could be added i mean instead of a spring loaded microsd why not a microsim like tray for the microsd?
Some Quality control would be nice, wouldn't scared off some potential customers and retailers.
The Bezel is fine to be honest how else would you hold and rest your thumbs on the screen? While yes they could develop more into the software and have it reject the thumb, Its just not reasonable.
Also a full sized usb you said? How else can they make the device so thin? Maybe a micro usb, but i don't think it can transfer enough data/power while docked.
Display? Well Asus TFP Infinity self-explanatory for the media junkies such as I.
2Gb Ram, better for the multi-tasking android supports and features.
Speakers on the side, eg Galaxy Tab 10.1 first gen.
Metal or more high quality Chiclets keys on the keyboard.
I just hope somehow someway they will get to use a better GPU on the infinity because tegra 3 is great cpu wise, while it does lack a lot in the gpu department. I mean it has to power a 1080p display and it already lags abit on the prime in some games.

I don't believe usb port would add to the thickness of a device, the dock is thinner than the tablet and can fit a usb port with room to spare.
There is a need for a bezel, just a smaller one would be nice. I have average sized hands and the bezel is still rather wide for my thumbs, about 70% of the current size would be acceptable.

I didn't say Apple products don't have issues. You're missing the point and that's that ASUS did very little quality testing on the TFP with ICS to the point that most of us can't even do basic things like utilizing the web browser, or launching and switching between native apps without the system going bugard with problems.
If one can pick up a competitor product and start surfing the web without experiencing the load stall, wait close response, or abrupt-reboot when switching or launching other default installed apps then that points to a serious problem with the quality control at ASUS and Google.
As I said in another thread, Android 4.0 is a major let down in user experience. To me it makes the most ridiculed Microsoft operating systems of the past (Windows Vista, Windows Millennium) look good.
>You're missing the point and that's that ASUS did very little quality testing on the TFP
There is QC. You're it.
>The best option in my opinion is a 4g hotspot from clearwire, unlimited data for $45 a month
lolwut.. I don't think that's good at all...only paying me $45 to use unlimited data. $90 sounds much better.
>The 8 core batman version of wayne will be for ultrabooks/netbooks and the robin version will be for tablets & phones
Pee-wee version for $199 tablet.
>micro-SD slot
Asus should do the same as GPS...take it out! MicroSD? We don't need no stinkin' micro sd..
What's the one thing that all best-selling tablets have in common?
Ya got it! No micro-SD!
Conclusion: MicroSD slot is holding Prime back from greatness!
Allow unlock with out voiding hardware defect aspect of warranty. I can put a cold air intake on my car and if the power windows stop working I still have a warranty, just saying.
Also,
Now this is a HUGE one.
PUT ANOTHER SOC IN THE DOCK!! With Nvidias SLI technology that would be awesome! Even if it is just the GPU aspect of the tablet. With these SOCs costing about $20, have a "premium" dock priced at $200.
I would buy one in a heartbeat!

That's different, look at all those Smarties posting in general and q & a asking really smart questions if Asus didn't void the warranty, they would just RMA because they screwed up their own tablet. As a business that's not very smart idea.
Better? Well, jam in an extra processor or ten, a few(10) gigs of ram, up the battery and up the display to qhd(quad hd).
Can it be easily rooted on the latest firmware? Has the audio lag, touchscreen and lag issues been resolved? When was the last time the uk model has had a firmware update?
Is it true the micro sd card is read only on this tablet? Can file browsers like astro file browser acess the micro sd card ok?
Does the speaker placement cause any issues? Especially if you are going the be holding the tablet there most of the time.
How long does it take to charge the tablet?
Sorry for the long questions but i need to be sure that this is the right tablet for me, Samsung don't offer 32gb model in the uk so I'm really interested in the Z2 because of this.

I've not seen any audio lag. The touchscreen isn't the most responsive I've ever used, but is fine with fingers. Stylii are a different issue - I've not found one that works well. I've not seen any lag whilst using the tablet (except for the odd microstutter when Google play decides to update everything at once). I updated to the latest firmware as soon as I got it, so I don't know what these were like before.

All KitKat devices restrict apps writing to the SD (Astro for example would only be able to read the SD). By default you can only write to the SD by plugging into a computer and copying files across. However, if you're rooted, you can just install SD Fix (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix) and get the pre-KitKat behaviour.

They're a little low, but the tablet is so light that you're not likely to be gripping it hard enough to distort the sound. Personally I tend to hold it one handed in landscape like I would a book, with my thumb on the front of bottom edge and my fingers splayed out on the back. This way the speakers are completely unobstructed.

I've not charged from empty, but using the charger it comes with seems pretty quick. I can put it on charge, go make a cup of coffee, get back and it will have gone up by a percent or two. I bought the magnetic dock, and just leave it there when I'm not using it. The battery easily gets me through a day of heavy use, and when I'm at home it just sits on the dock.

I had exactly the same thoughts (also in the UK). 32GB is the way to go. I've had mine about a month now. I've installed pretty much every app/game I'm going to need, and the internal memory is about 80% full.
Some more thoughts:
Pros
This thing is so thin and light that I forget I'm carrying it in my bag. For me, that's a huge bonus over other tablets, and more than makes up for its flaws. It's noticeably easier to hold than an iPad Air over long periods.
Sony's interface is very close to stock Android, and most bloatware (of which there is very little) can be uninstalled.
Waterproofing is nice to have. I thought it was a gimmick at first (does anyone actually use these in the bath?), but I use mine to display recipes whilst cooking, and it's nice to not have to worry about splashes and spills.
Vibration - it lets me know that I've turned it on. I wouldn't miss this if it were missing, but it's nice to have.
NFC. I love NFC. I have a tag on the bottom of my universal remote; I use the remote to turn on my Hi-Fi, swipe the tag across the tablet, and the tablet connects over Apt-X Bluetooth and starts Spotify. Magic!
Dual-shock compatibility. It just works (you need an OTG cable for the initial pairing, after that it's Bluetooth), and is very slick.
Cons
Screen resolution isn't as nice as other tablets. This isn't noticeable when used normally, though if it's closer to your face (e.g. you're lying down using it in bed), you can see the pixels.
The waterproof flaps on the SD and USB connectors feel a bit flimsy. I'd highly recommend the magnetic doc, or a connector adapter such as the Magnector-X for charging, so that you don't have to open the port covers.
It's a fingerprint magnet (but you can just wash it clean, because it's waterproof).
The IR blaster seems to have a very narrow "beam" so is a bit tricky to use. There is also a ~1 second delay between pressing the onscreen button and the IR signal being sent. I've given up on using it, but I'm not sure how much use I'd have gotten from it anyway.
I'd go to a store and have a play if I were you. Try and find one that's not got a huge security lock on it; I've seen this on display in some stores with a metal cage around it, or a huge self retracting security cable, which makes it hard to get a feel for how it would be to hold.
i know about the screen resolution, it's not as great compared samsung note 2014 but the Z2 has the advantage of more memory space, i think that is a good trade off imo.
i tend to hold my tablet in portrait mode so the speaker placement is a issue for me, i like that it's light so i can sit down comfortably with it for long periods, i have the galaxy note 10.1 2012 model and it's quite heavy compared to current models out there now, especially for long periods of use.
that is a bonus that the tablet supports the dual shock 3 out of the box, on other devices you have to root to use the controller wirelessly.
the waterproof flaps you say are a issue, so if you are using it in a water environment wouldn't that cause problems?
the galaxy note 10.1 2012 is just as bad when it comes to finger prints but it can be easily cleaned.
i didn't know it has vibration feedback, no website lists this feature, so thanks for telling me that.
samsung is king of bloat, that is good that there is minimal it saves me having to remove it all when i set it up lol.
battery life sounds good, maybe even better than the galaxy note 2012, quite frequently i'm charging the device during the day while using it. it could be because the device is getting old though.
i use my stylus a lot on my galaxy tablet, can you offer me some feedback if you have used one on this tablet? that is good to hear that it's easily rooted.
and thanks a lot for the reply.
I am very happy with my Z2 tablet.
I've not had any issues with the waterproof flaps. One covers the microsd (and sim) slot and the other covers the usb port. If you get a wireless charger, you won't find yourself opening the flaps often. They stay in place and have not opened by themselves. I don't think you'll have problems with waterproofness.
I personally find that the screen keeps quite clean. It's a MAJOR improvement in this respect compared to my previous generation Xperia Tablet Z.
I've tried using the Z2 Tablet with a stylus (Lynktec Rechargeable Apex Fine Point Active Stylus). It's been disappointing. Writing is nowhere as precise as with the in-built stylus on my Samsung Galaxy Note 3. If using a stylus with my tablet were important to me, I would have gone with a Galaxy Note tablet.

i know about the screen resolution, it's not as great compared samsung note 2014 but the Z2 has the advantage of more memory space, i think that is a good trade off imo.
i tend to hold my tablet in portrait mode so the speaker placement is a issue for me, i like that it's light so i can sit down comfortably with it for long periods, i have the galaxy note 10.1 2012 model and it's quite heavy compared to current models out there now, especially for long periods of use.
that is a bonus that the tablet supports the dual shock 3 out of the box, on other devices you have to root to use the controller wirelessly.
the waterproof flaps you say are a issue, so if you are using it in a water environment wouldn't that cause problems?
the galaxy note 10.1 2012 is just as bad when it comes to finger prints but it can be easily cleaned.
i didn't know it has vibration feedback, no website lists this feature, so thanks for telling me that.
samsung is king of bloat, that is good that there is minimal it saves me having to remove it all when i set it up lol.
battery life sounds good, maybe even better than the galaxy note 2012, quite frequently i'm charging the device during the day while using it. it could be because the device is getting old though.
i use my stylus a lot on my galaxy tablet, can you offer me some feedback if you have used one on this tablet? that is good to hear that it's easily rooted.
and thanks a lot for the reply.

I don't think you'll have any problems then. The top and bottom bezels (as viewed in landscape) are large enough that if held in portrait mode you're very unlikely to ever cover the speakers. Assuming you're right handed and holding the tablet with your left (this is how I read newspapers and magazines on mine), one speaker will be about an inch diagonally down and to the right of the base of your thumb, and the other will be well out of the way at what is now the top of the tablet.
It also worth pointing out that the tablet allows screen rotation in all directions (is this true of all tablets? My phone doesn't do this by default), so if you do ever find that the speaker placement is an issue, you can just rotate it 180°.

Agreed. I should have been clearer when I listed the flaps as a con in my post above. I've got no concerns about their waterproofness. My concern is that if I was opening the USB cover daily to charge the tablet it might become weakened or damaged, which is why I bought the magnetic chargers. The port covers feel quite delicate when opened, but very secure when closed.

Same here. I've tried a DAGi 701 stylus (which is passive). Sketching is doable, but the display doesn't seem sensitive enough for writing. I hope that this is a software thing, though even if it were fixed, the extra features of the Note series such as the hover and palm detection would make it much more suited to note taking. I see the Z2 as more of a media consumption, rather than creation, device.
ok, thanks for the feedback guys, ill take all your replies in consideration when deciding, i use the black rubber end stylus, the one you mentioned is similar to the stylus that is included with the note 10.1, but it seems that no matter what stylus i will use i think i'll get the same results which is a shame really.
really torn between these two devices ,
am talking about AOSP or CM on z5c , is AOSP working well on it ?
the 5x display is not that great , is the z5c display any better ?
any suggestion is appreciated .
I have just been evaluating the two side my side for the past fortnight trying to decide which to keep.
Hightlights of the z5c have been its size, speaker quality, and overall build quality. Micro SD slot is handy and waterproofness is nice to have. However I have found the camera to be very disappointing and slow to use and the results average. Also the smaller screen size can make operating Xperia keyboard and text input frustrating at times.. I dont htink the screen is as good as the one the Nexus but maybe thats just me. Excellent battery life. I have only tried Sony factory ROM and was not aware that others such as CM are available yet?
Highights of the Nexus 5x have been the crisp clean Marshmallow interface, good screen and excellent point and shoot camera. Screen is not as repsonsive as x5c when it needs to dim in a dark environment. It has a Terrific keyboard that is really accurate and easy to use. along with best fingerprint reader I have used. Downsides to it are its plasticy design with protruding lens which makes me reluctant to put it down on its back on a desk. even though I know the lens will not contact the desk. A Google Adopted TPU case fixed this though. But as soon as you encase it no-one will have any idea it is a google phone. Speaker is crappy and poor sound quality compered to z5c. USB C power cables are orphans and mean you cannot use existing A cables existing devices most people have. Couple this with a mediocre battery life can be problematic. Biggest downside for me though is its size. Too big too put into from jeans pocket and protrudes an inch or so out the top of shirt pocket.
So I ended up selling my 5x and keeping the z5c. My hope is that Sony will do something in the marshmallow update to improve the point and shoot usabilty of the camera. Hope this helps.

thanks a lot , very helpful ,
and yes there is an AOSP 5.1.1 rom available for the z5c , no CM yet ( can't imagine it will be long before a release , given sony has released the binaries ) ,
here you go :
http://fxpblog.co/aosp/aosp-5-1/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-compact/orig-development/aosp-builds-z5c-t3226266
I haven't tested the 5x yet, but have the z5c for about two weeks now and in my opinion there are two main issues with the z5c:
First the display colors really seem to be washed out, the black is more a really dark grey than a black (I don't know if this is due to a defect screen or if this is the case for all z5c's), also the display resolution of 720p isn't really enough for me as I clearly can see the edges of round app icons for example even when I'm farther away from the screen.
Also the increase of the phone temperature during prolonged use really bothers me, but that's a known issue of the Snapdragon 810. The camera is just okay, I honestly expected more, especially in low light conditions. But as far as is understand this is rather a post-processing issue than an hardware issue, I hope this improves with Marshmallow.
Two plus points are good battery live (maybe also due to the relatively low res screen) and the overall speed of the phone, which really has improved since the last firmware update.
I had both phones at the same time. Here are my thoughts:
Z5 Compact
+ I prefer the phone size much better
+ I play ingress, so prefer the better battery life and single handed use
+ I have a couple of external battery packs, which quick charge the Z5C
+ Waterproof
+ Really like that Sony went with regular micro-USB connector unlike the Z3C
+ Expandable memory. This can become expanded internal memory in Marshmallow
+ I love Tap to Wake
+ It is a sexy looking device
- Thicker than the N5X
- Not thrilled that the volume rocker is below the power button
- Surely majority of folks don't use the wrist strap feature?! It's a dust collector for me.
- Typing an issue on a smaller keyboard
- Voice recognition is iffy
- I hate that I don't have the option to turn off the notification light at when charging at night (always have to remember to place the phone facedown)
- Run hot under heavy use, but I use a case to avoid the slipper glass on the back anyway
Nexus 5X
+ Clean UI
+ Fast updates
+ Better fingerprint sensor
+ Thin and light
+ Better typing experience
+ Ambient display
- Too large for single-handed use
- Camera pops out like a nipple - could be seen as a positive
- USB-C means new expense on cables and charger (consider the added expenses here)
- My external chargers will work with N5X, but will not charge as quick as a licensed Qualcomm Quickcharge phone
- The vibration motor is a lot harsher than the Z5C. Not a fan.
- The mono speaker seems to be facing the back, but there is no opening on the back, so sound is kinda muffled.
- What's the deal with the giant bezel?!
- No expanded memory support
- The internal specs are lower (808 vs 810 in Z5C, and Adreno 418 vs 430 in Z5C). The Z5C guts are actually in the Nexus 6P, but with 3GB RAM.
I ended up returning the Nexus 5X primarily because of the size and having to make sure I have a USB-C cable handy in case I run through the battery. Even when I had the phone charging while I was playing ingress, the phone battery was discharging faster than recharging.
The Z5C is very comfortable to use. I do have an itch for a completely bloat free UI, with Marshmallow. Once unlock and root processes eventually get released/cleaned-up, the Z5C will be take a bigger bite into the Nexus 5X's main selling point.
N5X advantages:
- Camera (for photos) is in another league, look at the camera samples, the photos are very sharp compared to all Sony Z cameras.
- Fast updates.
- Stock clean Android (only Google apps that can be disabled) / Camera2 API / probably…not sure: Google Now Always ON / etc
Z5C adv:
- Battery life (If N5X battery life is less than 50% better than N5 battery, then it still really sux).
- Size (subjective)
- SoC 810 is much better.
- Long battery life when gaming.
- Some General hardware~ (mic quality / screen quality / etc).
Sent from my E5823
Finally i bought the 5x due to no AOSP roms available yet on z5c ,
thanks everyone .
So, I had nexus 5x for 1.5 month, got 5x after beloved Sony z5c international with fingerprint reader and wrist strap due to switching to verizon from ATT and it was cheapest of the semi-decent phones. I regret both.
1. While its compatible, and verizon sim works, i barely get signal 3G LTE to none while my other friends right next to me with iphones and samsung phones get high speed full bars 4g lte, so must be poor antenna or not fully compatible with verizon as claimed. And mind you its after hours on the phone with verizon i got it to even work. When i try send emails most times it flashes message every 1-2 seconds "no connection" "retry" then "connected", that creates multiple drafts when im trying to send email, nuisance to say the least. Or messages I thought were sent stuck in limbo, shown sent on device, but when login to email account from pc it isnt sent or even in drafts, so its on a device stuck, not sent even when connected while shown as sent on device.
2. giant phone not one handed. And no wrist strap hook!
3. Poor photo quality, no depth, poor resolution, only way to focus camera is to take 1 shot only then it tries to focus, any other way it would normally work on z5c with green to red focus window is not available. I tweaked it a bit using camera MX but even so, mediocre original software & hardware.
3. Pricy and no expansion memory, i got 32gb, and OS + apps already took over 20gb, and mind you i only have very few brain games and productivity apps like docsToGo that do not take much space, rest is android os itself upfront.
4. Not waterproof or resistant. Even when water droplet hits center of screen it acts out thinking its my finger, z5c did not react same way to water at all, it ignored it mostly, only responding to finger.
5. google keyboard is horrible, not even arrows to move coursor right or left within text, and gokeyboard became commercialized with adds so.. i didnt find better alternative, and you have to be precise getting it into right spot to insert extra words in between especially at the beginning of paragraph.
6. New Android version lost too many good features gaining none. Like little menu on the bottom right to close all open apps at once, gone! Now you have to manually close each app. specific to z5c mini apps like calculator, browser that can be used simultaneously with other apps window in window, shown both at once of course not included, and nothing similar available.
7. Battery life poor. I had about 5hours browsing no video out of it before it hits 20% mark from 100%, with video even faster. While usb c helps charge faster, true, but it doesnt help battery life , and no wireless charging, adapters just came to market, i do not think ill keep phone long enough to try if it works.
8. Back to memory expansion, so forget microsd, but even usb wont work. I have samsung duo usb3 to micro usb, so attempt 1 was to use anker adapter with my samsung usbduo drive and it didnt even register the drive. So i went ahead and bought an app to register usb c drive, didnt work. attempt 2 after shelling out for the nexus 5x compatible app, bought usb c flash drive guess what, only registers with that app, and even then cant just browse folders and files, open, work with file, save, ..no. you would have to copy to phone then work with file, save to phone only, and only then copy or move back to usb c drive. Really! So i scrapped that plan, went cloud, and got rid of usb c drive.
9. When plug in to pc have to manually each time select transfer files or it will only charge by default, havent found way to change that either.
10. Camera and fingerprint reader so close, guess where your fingerprint lands most times? Yup, keep wiping the camera lense.
11. Cherry on top, doesnt come with usb c to usb 2.0 or usb 3.0 cable, google store omitted that just saying charger and usb c cable, so as you discover that fact and jumping to look for a cable thats never seems available in google store site, your return time slot is closing down on you ..14 days..and you cant even test it with pc plugged in..
So, good stuff..fingerprint scanner works, usb c charge faster by 2x time.. that is about it.
Contacted google store and since its over 14 days = nonrefundable.
Conclusion, I am going back to AT&T and my beloved z5c! Yes, it doesnt have usb c and older (better version of android).. but guess what small, waterproof, has wriststrap to phone not just case, faster, better camera, better photos album layout, keyboard, LTE 4G without hangs and drops, same fingerprint scanner, and if i left out anything else, its there, on that sweet small device.
Perhaps someone else might find 5x mediocre good enough and cheap enough but for me I am ok going back to proven to be better for same price!
Edit: I didn't read the dates or the whole tread. I need sleep.
Hello,
I'm facing the same thing for a few days now; I'm hesitating between picking up a Nexus 5X or a Z5C, the first one has the advantage of frequent updates and clean Android experience but a relatively big screen while the second one has an ideal screen but I've heard about lots of overheating problems related to it.
So since it's 2016 and both phones are running Marshmallow, can you guys give me a quick update on your experiences now ? Thanks

The Sony ui is still full of bugs but marshmallow performs at a decent level. Still nothing to compete with it in its size class.

The z5c is a great phone, its just the battery life isn't the best in my opinion......you ever consider thinking of the Z3C? Im sure its a no since its been 2 years passed.
Thanks a lot for your feedback, As you said: the thing is that the Z5C has nothing to compete against in the small flagship category, if the battery lasts for a day on average use then I'm fine also the phone doesn't overheat from normal use as I've been reading all over the internet.
Regarding the Z3C, I think I can consider it if it's not too far from the Z5C performance, any feedback on that could be helpful!

Z3c edges out slightly better in performance and dev support. BUT it has side charging port and flaps, not the most practical. It's all about your price range really.
Thanks a lot! Actually I have a bit of money on the side so I can get the Z5C, and in Europe the difference between the Z5C and the Z3C is like 60 dollars, the nexus 5x is the cheapest of all three phones

Just like guy from above said, its all about your price/how much you can afford, ppl mainly go for nexus 5x for fast updates (pretty much it). If you not picky on the year, Z3C is your best bet if you want performance and best battery life and plus theres a unique developer at the Z3C forum that has been making the Z3C a perfect phone for anyone. The reason I got the Z5C is because I had screen issues on the Z3C and plus i was still in love of the compact series of the xperia. Z5C is doing fine for me

Your welcome, be sure to go to the Z3C forum if you have additional questions, its really a good phone. I recommend flashing this rom to make your phone very unique but before doing that, you need root and recovery, thank God its easier to do it without unlocking the boot loader, just zoom in that forum for all of your questions, I wish you the best of luck!

I suggest you cancel the z3c order. The Z3/Z3c is easy to has touch issue after 12~16 months, the touch panel life cycle is short, my friend Z3 got screen problem right after his warranty expired a few days(exactly 12 months passed) and he fuxked up and switched to Iphone, he was a Sony fans with only SE/Sony phones used in his life.
I admit Z3c got better software development, battery and thermal control. However, the camera on Z3c is worse than Z1c/Z5c. But if you only want a cheap compact and don't care buy another one after 1~2 years then Z3c is still a good choice.

Hello and sorry I was on vacation )
Thank you very much though as (un)lucky as I am, I've returned the z3c via amazon but then I'm back looking, maybe I only have the z5c or something like htc m8 to go after.
I really really like that the twindock accessory has been reduced in size, and that those two huge grip, trigger handles have been removed. I've been looking for good shots of this accessory in the previews in articles and on YouTube. Engagdet's article has an embedded video that gives us the best view of this accessory, and is still poorly revealing footage, but at least shows off the back and underside. Gawd, I would have liked to have seen what the device looks like as a closed clamshell. The article itself also shows pictures from the prerelease event where a breakdown was displayed. Very helpful.
If it isn't too big, I'm probably going to carry the phone in the twindock as my EDC. Double, independent screens, both at 120hz, for epic multitasking, a total 10 amp hours of battery, crazy loudspeakers, hopefully full sized SD card support still (I use full sized SD cards a lot). I do wish that the hinge still resembled the original twindock's full length, tighter implementation.
I hope it's pocketable. If not, I might end up dissecting it and trying to build a custom, dual screen phone case out of it, or stepping into the life of a dude that carries a manbag.
I don't know why we haven't seen second-screen bearing cases like this for other phones. If a similar case with an identical screen and battery extension existed for it, I would be all over a Note series device, but as things are, such an accessory doesn't exist for any other device, as far as I know.
I'm not much of a mobile gamer, though I'm sure this will change for me once I own a top-of-the-line gaming phone, but I am definitely a power user, and a second screen accessory like this looks to deliver on the promises made by the failed foldable phone revolution in an even better implementation.
If it were offered in a 5g compatible variant, this would undoubtedly be my next 5+ years phone. My note 4 is ready to retire, and I like being able to buy the best of the best once every half decade and ride it until it's ****e.
Does anybody have a better source for info on the twindock 2? And does this kind of an EDC use case appeal to anyone else? I know, it'll be thick, but just imagine the sheer power.

You can't use the bottom screen on as a keyboard for the top unfortunately :/ They work as entirely separate screens other than in a couple of games.
Maybe a Dev here can help with the keyboard down and an app on top ??
The 5000mah battery doesn't really extend the battery life of the phone. On balanced mode, not powerbank mode, you'll roughly get 7hrs SOT for both the phone and twinview dock, is it due to poor optimization? This is on 60hz and about 50% brightness.
It's it worth buying for everyday multitasking? Not gaming ie messenger and video? $398 Aus is price of cheap laptop
I purchased this device for $399 Aus stupid overpriced ROG.
I do like being able to watch YouTube and surfing web or play COD bottom screen and something on the top. I do wish ASUS could give a full screen two screen mode like the LG does.. multiwindow does not work while in dock mode so only two apps open on seperated screens at a time. I will be disappointed if the ROG 3 isn't backwards compatible.
It's a good device but software developers are not onboard with it with games... Would be good if Asus could run something in gamegenie to map onscreen buttons and keywords to bottomed screen.
Twinview dock 2 is a great device... There are alot of software modifications needed is extend to one screen for Chrome etc I feel $399 Aus is way to expensive for this device... Glad I tried it but there are alot of issues ie some apps do now allow to be used horizontally. I do hope ROG 3 will allow this device to be used with.... Otherwise I will Goto LGs twin screen variant. I had ROG 1 and all accessories and all were a waste of money... I do hope they try and keep there user base with ROG 3 and support this twinview dock with software modifications as stated. If anyone thinking of getting one do not it's not worth the money
does anyone else that owns the twindock have this weird issue ?
every time I connect the phone to it, it doesn't work properly the first time as the screen keeps flickering and switching off and on.
I have to unplug it and the connect again and it works fine on the 2nd try.
I thought it was the connector at first, but tested a couple of more times and the same thing happens every time.
It always works properly on the 2nd try only.
Noticed that this started happening after the phone got an update 2-3 days ago and it also updated something on the dock.
Yes have that issue... I have to undock sometimes.. on and off... Sometime also get pixel distortion... I would stay away from this accessory
---------- Post added at 01:33 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:31 AM ----------
Yes have that issue... I have to undock sometimes.. on and off... Sometime also get pixel distortion... I would stay away from this accessory... Sometimes prompts me for firmware update even though latest... It then fails lol cheap expensive plastic
anyone figure out how to hide the navigation bar on the top screen? (if it's possible)
I too have the flickering issue. I'm not really liking this accessory as it isn't implemented the right way. We should be able to stretch apps across it and such. it's too picky on how a second screen should work optimally to be worth it.
Has anyone had any issues with the dock cooling? Correct me if I'm wrong but this used to extract the hot air when the phone was docked in in Android 9. Now i play and it heats up the screen of the phone more cause it is pushing the air into the phone. Does anyone have this problem too?

So guys, after months using the dock, do you guys recommend to buy it? i want to buy it, found one new very cheap. The same issues keep or they solved with software updates?
