[Q] Defective tablets (Screen) - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

anyone else have any defect issues? Video of defect
Mine now has this ghost image of the home screen on everything else. Especially noticeable when pressing the N button to generate the nook menu. It almost looks like the home screen image is burned in, but I know now this is not true because the ghost image changes as I change what is on the home screen. I even tried unrooting, suspecting it had something to do with root or new script and it occurred when I unrooted too, but not until I sideloaded an app... was very sporadic. I might take some pics for yall to see and then exchange it tomorrow... Dunno.
Updated 12/12/11 After filming the above video I have now come to the conclusion that the ghost image is of anything on the screen that is left there for a few minutes, not just the home screen. It clears after turning off and on and then reappears and gets worse again. I took it back to barnes and noble, they didnt ask if it was rooted and didnt even require me to show them the defect, immediately exchanged with receipt. They have plenty of stock too and selling tons they said.

Have you try hard reset? 8 failed boot method?

could have sworn the unroot method does the same thing...

I would try this if I were you. It fixed some of my screen issues a few weeks ago.

I would love to see some pics of the screen problem you are having. I haven't seen any like it with the NT, actually, I haven't seen any defects at all with the NT.

I had a green stuck pixel that was fixed with a factory reset as well; bizarre. It could have been the rapid shutdown/restart cycle, I guess.

You got VERY lucky. They took mine into the back room for 1/2 an hour when I was complaining of the back making a sticky noise. They handed it back and said I had to do the exchange online (without any explanation).
Turns out they took it back there to look for a rooted device even though it was a hardware issue.
After taking it back a week later, they said I now own the device since they seen it was rooted the first time I took it in - no fix, no exchange and gave me the theft prevention phone number like I was trying to rip them off...
So now I booted the system with OOBE, rooted it, removed all their apps and have a nice little device used to move the community forward without any props to them.
I have seen others report that the battery went down quickly when OOBE'd but once you remove their apps, it holds up very well.
Just a word of warning. The app to remove the root, is quick and easy...

tkramer, yes, that is true and I did have mine unrooted before I took it back, just incase.

Thanks for posting the video, I was able to see the ghosting image well from your video and I can't see any reason that a replacement couldn't be issued on an unrooted device.
@tkramer He was not lucky, he was smart enough to know that you can't try and get a replacement on a rooted device. Rooting a device voids the warranty.
It seems that they tried to give you a chance to return it online because, once the tech sees that it is rooted, he or she can't do anything with it. If that tech were to exchange your device they would have lost their job once the device was known to be rooted. This would have been found out when the tech sends it back to be repaired and inspected if it could be used as a certified pre-owned or used as a demo unit and ultimately traced back to the tech who issued the return.

I returned the first two NTs I got, one had a dead/stuck pixel and the second had a strange clicky noise when squeezing the bottom of the tablet. I returned both before I rooted them becuase I noticed the defects almost right away.
The first return they just opened the box and turned it on to make sure it worked and handed me a new one. The second return the guy didn't even turn the nook on, he just opened the box to make sure it was in there and then gave me a new one.
I guess some stores are less strict about exchanging them.

Problem with screen (8Bit color/bleeding)

Hi
I am having problems with my screen. Looks like the LCD is faulty. Trying to resolve with Samsung Support, but thought I would ask here if this is a known problem or if there is a simple fix.
It looks like the grayscale colors are not right, I installed a screen tester and the grayscale bars have a red tint. all other tests in the appl look ok. however pictures/video's all look like they are 16bit color and icons look like they are bleeding
Here is a picture of the problem
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/836/atab1large.jpg
Any thoughts?
Eric...
Looks like a faulty panel !
Take it back to where you bought it and have them exchange it.
Sent from my Galaxy10.1 TouchWiz/ADWex equipped Starship.
I have exactly the same problem Tablet has been bought in the United States and now I am in Europe. Samsung won't repair/replace it anywhere in Europe. Only US Samsung offered to help me but the tablet needs to be at a United States address. Now I have to send it back to someone I know.. will take months
Well my problem disappeared.... not really sure why/how, but I have been playing with different ROM's etc. and I THINK it might of been when I did a permissions repair, but...
Plus i'm 99.3% sure I had the problem before I rooted/ROM'd
Another reason to stop loading these 3rd party ROMs. I dont understand why people are installing these 3rd party ROMs to begin with. The stock ROM is by FAR the most stable and error free ROM you can use. Most of the issues people are starting threads about would have NEVER occurred if they just stuck with the stock ROM.
I get this too now. I've been pootin' around with different roms for a while, no problems. Then a few days ago while I was running GalaxyTask 8.0 the "bleeding" started slowly. First around the edges of things, but then the entire screen. The colors seem to color-cycle into the end result. I figured it might be the rom so I tried a stock one. And then I tried a complete stock reset with stock recovery and factory reset - the works. No change. It's still like this. And in the bootloader and the recovery too. Sometimes it gets moments of clarity, everything is fine, but only for a few seconds.
Busted tablet? I bought it while in the US this summer, so taking it back will be an issue. Getting a Transformer Prime late next week *fingers crossed* but still. I was hoping to sell this fully functioning :|
Example:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/120921/IMG_20111214_214938.jpg
I had the same issue. Also bought in US while I live in Hungary. I had to send it back to my relatives who took it back to Samsung and they replaced it in warranty. Fortunately, I was travelling there by the time we got the new one and I could take it back home with me. This seems to be a weakness of the tablet. My replacement unit has been working nicely ever since.
I had the same issue with an August build stock tablet from the US.
Thankfully Samsung UK took it in for repair and ended up replacing it as it was apparently unrepairable.
My issue used to show up with 60+ minutes of continued use. I think it was thermal related as the warmer it was the quicker it seemed to develop the fault. putting it on standby for a few minutes used to clear it, but the problem would come back quickly as it was warm.
Anyone know how Samsung handles this issue if the device it out of warranty? Mine is acting up pretty bad and I haven't been able to find anything on here about repairing the issue on your own. It will be clean view for a few minutes and then the color bleeding some background effects kick in making the tablet a large paperweight. I've been looking for and excuse to get the 10.1 Note, but it sure would be nice to get a few bucks for this since it's in perfect condition... besides the screen.
My 10.1 is starting to develop the same issue. Never been rooted, always on a stock rom. I've never dropped it or banged it around. It also seems to start happening afternlonge usage. First imsee a few purple lines across the screen and then the entire scren turns to 8bit colors, etc. Once I turn it off and back on it goes back to normal. Annoying, especially simce I bought it 13 months ago so I'm guessing it's past the warranty period.

I'm with you - mine has never been rooted or tampered with. Other than getting heavy usage, I've taken perfect care of it. I've been unable to find a fix.

If you're out of warranty you're on your own. Samsung won't repair or replace it for free.
At this point I'd just like to know how to fix it and what it would cost, ballpark. I haven't been able to find anyone who's delt with it, bar throwing their tablet.

My 10.1v just went.
Guys, I'm having the same issue today. And here is the fix:
1. Take out the back cover.
2. Look for the black cable that have SET printed on the end.
3. Removes both ends and then reconnect.
4. Push/rub at both ends while the screen is on. You'll notice the tint-colour of the LCD will change. Stop when it looks normal again then put a tape on top to hold the cable in that position
4. Put the cover back and enjoy your Note 10.1 again
Good luck!

[Q] Banging my head on my desk over moral dilemma

I just can't freaking stand it.
Starting about three weeks ago I have been having major problems with my Streak doing spontaneous restarts. I tried everything. Nothing worked.
I went as far as to use the Wiki instructions to install a version one generation old on the phone so that it would do an over the air update to the current release, which it did. Didn't help. Whenever I used the phone for a long call or to play a game or use navigation, anything that kept it actually doing something for several minutes, it would start rebooting. Sometimes it would freeze to where I had to pull the battery. I even bought a disposable phone while on vacation so I could have something I could count on.
So last week I called Dell support and described what is going on. When the tech heard the symptoms and that I had already done a factory reset and fresh loads and more factory resets, he quickly decided to replace the phone.
I have had the phone since April 2011 and in May I dropped it in my living room. It has worked perfectly but does have a crack in the glass that is purely cosmetic and is not why I tried to get it replaced. The phone has worked perfectly until recently.
I'm banging my head on the desk because, wouldn't you know it, the phone has been working perfectly since I called in. We didn't do anything, just talked about the phone, and it has had one restart in the last week. As a test, I used the Navigator for the 30 mile commute home from work. My wife called me, the phone answered, worked flawlessly on speaker, and when she hung up the Navigator came right back up as smooth as you could ask for. The one game I play right now (Grave Defense) has worked flawlessly except for one restart in the middle of a game. I couldn't ask for the phone to be better.
So what do I do when the replacement arrives? I'm not sure if I trust the phone not to start screwing up again, but I'm going to be sending back a phone that is apparently working fine but has a cracked glass. We all know the entirely reasonable conclusion they will come to.
So what should I do?
Maybe you should call Dell and tell them that the screen is cracked. Find out if they will even take it back. They may not, and wind up charging you for the new one. I've not heard of them doing this, mind you, but it sounds possible.
They may just tell you to send in the old one anyway, but you may as well let them know that the screen is cracked, since they are going to find out when they get it. Hopefully since you already have a return authorization, it wont matter...
Has anyone noticed it seems to be easier to get a replacement since they EOL'd the Streak?
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
Maybe they're trying to clear out stock?
I had no problem sending it back with the cracked glass as long as the problem had nothing to do with the glass. Now the damned thing is working, so I have an issue with it.
I really don't understand this phone. I didn't change anything and it is like a different phone.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Oh, I thought the screen cracked after you called them.
Nevermind. As long as you disclosed the cracked screen, don't hesitate to send it back. If it was bad once, no reason to think it wont be again.
There are definitely some flaky ones.
From some posts I've read, it does seem as though they are being unusually friendly about returns lately. Prolly just my imagination...

Oh, I never said I did that. I don't want people to think they are knowingly taking back units with cracked screens. The tech didn't ask if it had ever been dropped and I didn't see the point in volunteering the information as it had nothing to do with the problem I was having. I know that is not exactly taking the high road, but as I said, the screen isn't why I'm exchanging it. I considered swapping my cracked screen and the unbroken one from the replacement and sending my flaky phone back with the good screen, but they would probably notice that the phone had been dismantled and assume that is the source of the problem. I'm between a rock and a hard place here, but it's my own fault. I'm probably going to end up with a bill for the replacement phone, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
I'm mostly just astonished at how freaking strange the behavior of this phone is. It was working fine then lost its mind for about three weeks and then decided that it was going to start working the way it is supposed to again with no interference from me. It was flaky in the morning, I did nothing to it, and that afternoon it started behaving itself.
Well, it froze up good yesterday. Tried everything short of swinging a dead cat over my head in a cemetary at midnight and got it working again, just in time to retire it.
When I got home the replacement was waiting for me. Smooth as silk. I played the hell out of my new favorite time sucking game last night (Stupid Zombies) and not a single hiccup. I'd love to lose some of the extra apps, but I think I am going to leave well enough alone this time. Now I need to find out how much Dell is going to bill me for returning a unit with a cracked screen, but I'll worry about that when it happens.

HTC View Dead

Good morning,
I ordered one of the new HTC View 4g off Ebay. Outside a weird power-on issue on initial boot (buttons lit up but the display would never turn on), it worked fine.
It continued to work flawless for about 2 weeks (well outside 3 random reboots). On 12/25/2011, I was reading a book via Amazon Kindle. I turned off the display and put it in my jacket pocket (as usual) and when I got home it wouldn't turn back on.
Now it doesn't turn on or charge, and there are no lights under either circumstance, which concerns me because it didn't suffer any impact/water damage, no upgrades, etc. and the device was over 50% charged when I put it into "standby" mode.
Any thoughts on how I should proceed? I'm leaning towards returning the device (already got a RMA), but A.) I'm going to miss it, and B.) I'm concerned about my data (since I can't wipe it prior to the return).
Any thoughts, feedback, pity? ;-)
try holding down Vol- and power for about 20-30 seconds, that will force it to reboot, if that dosent work, you shouldnt be worried about your data, as it wont be accessable unless they repair it and go through your data (unlikleey)
Had something like this happen a few days ago to me on the View in stock Gingerbread.
I pressed the power button to time the screen out (on homescreen) and set it aside on a counter. 30 minutes-1 hour later, I went back to turn it on. It was like it turned off on its own, holding power down for 5 seconds didn't turn it on. I had to hold the power button down for 15+ seconds and it booted back normally.
Not sure what exactly happened, but hasn't happened any other times since then in 1.5 weeks of using it.
Update
globatron says it's not upgraded, so I'm still at loss...and you can ignore the statement below
...ignore...
Sooooo...I tried the whole recovery menu again, and this time it worked. I noticed hboot says 6.12.1002. I could have sworn I was at 1.1x, so I suspect that my tablet updated even though I specifically told it not to. /sigh
..............
I think you've got a lemon anyway, I'd honestly recommend you take the RMA, but you might want to go back to stock first.
I think you are probably right. It's too bad because I kinda got attached to the dumb thing and the retailer doesn't have anymore (and I can't find any at the same price), so I'm going to have to do a refund. :-(

Is this one of the units you got off bidallies on ebay?
If it is, that's the same unit I have. I remember my stock HBOOT was 1.09. We should have all been on 1.18.651.1 prior to any updates.
You didn't root it or take an OTA or anything?
Can't say I have had the same exact problems as you though..

Nope, other than the small power down thing I wrote in post #3 and slight screen bleeding (takes complete darkness to see it) right above the proprietary port, that's the only minor gripes I've had with it. I have a few of these units, this is the only one with the 'issues' so far. Sorry that you've got a worse experience.

Very odd google play experiance.

Ok let me start from the beginning. I ordered my nexus 10 on december 5th and by the 14th it still was not processed. On the google play store it was sold out, so I called up Google and asked what was going on. They appologized for the delay and sent one out right away with two day shipping at no extra charge. I received my nexus 10 yeaterday only to find the seals on the box already opened. The seals state that if they are opened do not accept the package, and again I called Google. They reashured me that it was a new unit and they had no idea why the seals were broken and offered to cover my shipping costs. After opening the box everthing looks new, the plastic was one the tablet and the charger, and nothing was missing from the box. The tablet is flawless even though I think they sent me a refurb there is no light leak, the back does not cave in like others have reported, and the screen evenly disturbes the light. I have run into one problem thought and since I got it the tablet has restatred on me three times. So here is my delima: wehter or not the tablet is refurbished I do not care because it is flawless, but on the other hand do you think the random reboots are due to it being a refurbished or bad unit? Is anyone else experianceing random reboots? Next I am going to try to root it to see if that makes a difference. If not I may just call back and complain and demand a new in box unit with unopended seals.

Mine used to reboot once every couple of hours use, maybe once or twice a day? I've not had any issues after installing CM10 though, not one reboot in about a week!

The rebooting happens to alot of people. I doubt yours is a refurb. I read several tips about the reboots by turning off the location services etc and my reboots are down to like 1 a week. I would also say that if you have not issues then you definitely do not want to send it back. This forum is filled with people who sent a minor flawed tablet back only to end up with a much more flawed tablet. And it starts a cycle.

Thanks for the advice I am going to root it when I get home.
Reboots are more often software or firmware related rather than hardware. Installing another ROM and kernel will probably fix your reboots, but if they do not then it is probably best to RMA because it is a more serious issue
I haven't had mine reboot, but I did get it to crash one time. I think I was to blame since I was in a game, switched out to calendar, back to game, chat, then youtube in quick succession.
I did read that people were making sure that Currents had background syncing disabled. I did that as soon as I turned on the device. Couldn't tell you if that was the sole purpose of me having trouble free operation with my unit. Good luck.

Returns

Has anyone had to return their Moto 360 yet? Mine stopped responding to touch on the bottom 1/3 of the screen near the beginning of this week. I had a pattern lock set up and couldn't get past it as the bottom was unresponsive. After a few attempts the factory reset screen came up but the accept button was on the bottom. After a few minutes of tapping it finally recognize one and performed a factory reset. Upon reboot the bottom was still unresponsive.
I called Moto support and they are sending me a new one. They offered to have me send in my current one first and then send me a new one, or put a $99 hold on my credit card and pay $24.99 for shipping. I went for the latter and a new one will be shopping soon.
I'm wondering if anyone else has had screen issues and how wide spread it is. Also has anyone had any issues with returns?
Anyone?
None here... Yet!
I was in a meeting 2 weeks ago and checked the time and my whole screen was unresponsive, just a black screen even with always on mode enabled. I tried for like 20 minutes to get it to respond to touch and nothing. I got home and thought the battery might be dead even though I only had it on for 10 hours so I put it in it's charging craddle and still nothing. I went to get my phone to check bluetooth and it said watch was connected, checked android wear and it said connected too. Went back to get the watch and it was now on and showing 50% battery. This was 2 weeks ago and haven't had the problem re-occur. I paid for the extended warranty plan so not to concerned right now, and as I already scratched the screen I will most likely replace it anyways.

My 360 did get a little sluggish at times and froze a couple of times prior to the final issues I had with the bottom. I also had a message on occasion saying android wear had stopped and would eventually restart. When I had a freeze holding down the power button will eventually do a restart. All of those issues I attributed to buggy software that I hope gets solved in future updates. My final issue involving the bottom portion being unresponsive persisted after a factory reset.

I never had an issue with it before this happened. And holding the button down didn't do anything for for me, it still remained off even after holding it for over a minute. It just came back on all on its own for whatever reason and luckily hasn't happened again.
Well this isn't looking good. Spent two hours on the phone with Motorola support and was transferred about seven times before someone could figure out what happened to my RMA. I did finally get someone to help me but she had to start the whole process over. My credit card was refunded for the hold and shipping fee and the new one is now supposed to be "rushed".
Just an update
At this point I have spoken to over a dozen reps(I lost count), was transferred back and forth between several departments, was hung up on several times(I even switched phones to make sure it wasn't on my end), and spent countless hours trying to get this resolved. I've never had such horrible customer service. Finally yesterday I received an email with a working promo code for a new watch using the moto-maker site and am crossing my fingers I'll have a new one soon.
Sorry for the rant, I actually started this thread to see how many had any hardware problems, not to complain about Moto support. I was actually hopeful about the whole thing as there wasn't much response to my original inquiry here, but this last week has really turned me off of Motorola.
Update: New 360 arrived today.
My Moto's touch stopped working yesterday. It started with "phantom touches", where the display lighted up as if I touched it. When I actually touched the display, it was partially unresponsive. When I tried swiping, the menus stuck in between and were shaking horizontally. I could hard-reset the watch by pressing the button for 30 seconds. After that, the watch was working fine for a few minutes, then the trouble started all over again. Today, it got even worse as the display did not react on any touches any more...
I was able to reset it to factory settings, but it didn't help, so it does not seem to be a software issue.
Luckily I had ordered it at Amazon a few weeks ago, so I am getting a new watch as replacement. I hope I just had bad luck with that watch, and it's not a general issue.

That's what I am hoping as you and I are the only ones responding with problems so far. As you can see from my other posts I don't think Motorola even knew how to handle a return for one of these. Amazon should be a much more pleasant experience in that regard.
Did you get any type of additional warranty from Amazon?

No... I made the experience that Amazon Germany often just sends out a replacement when an article is defective a few days after delivery. They never fail to impress me with their customer service...
Going through this a second time really sucks. Last week my watch was on the charger all night and by morning the screen had a cyan dot that was dark in the middle and faded to black near the edge of the face. I tried holding down the side button to reset it but it still booted up to the cyan dot.
I started the process last Friday and got a promo code for a new watch. Used the promo code on the Moto Maker website and got the process going. At the end I hit the place order button and I get an error message telling me to call support. Ugh. I didn't have time to deal with it then, but my shopping cart was still showing the watch in it and that there was an order placed. I called today and at first the woman helping me couldn't find anything using the RMA # or the order number I had. When she finally figured out what happened she said the order didn't go through and my promo code was still good. She then tried to blame the error on my web browser.
I have seen news floating around there is currently a lawsuit against Lenovo\Motorola for failure to fulfill their warranties. Is it okay to post information and links on xda concerning the lawsuit for anyone who might be interested?
