Ok here's the deal, over the past week or so, sort of mid afternoonish time, I lose the ability to call, text or use data on my handset her signal remains constant. A quick fix to this is changing a setting in network from auto to GSM only which I am told logs off 3g and uses the 2g network yet once I switch to GSM only texts and calls return to normal. I've tried a new sim card from vodafone which didn't change the problem and I was wondering if anyone has had simalar problems and could maybe share a fix, as I don't want to keep my phone on 2g as its very slow.

I've also tried different kernels, firmwares and a full reset which non of those helped either.

Im a bit of a noob at this android thing but do you maybe need to import your carriers data settings? I had a look on my sgs2 but couldn't find them. On my old iphone you had to enter the carriers settings to access the 3g network

I've recently noticed a weird network bug on LFB. If the phone loses signal (on subway etc.) with data on, when signal is available it acts as though the SIM was refused by the network continuing to display Emergency calls only. If I turn data on and off it gets weirder (see screenshot).
The only way to fix it is too reset the radio, with flight mode, or *#*#4636#*#*
It's definitely not a hardware fault since, as you can see it still can connect to the network. It just acts as though the connection was refused (or alternatively does something weird that causes it to ACTUALLY be refused)
Anyone else experienced this??
The phone is an original BTU using unmodified LFB on China Unicom

Are you able to set/receive calls or send/receive SMS? What about USSD codes to your provider?
I've already read about other users complaining about this issue, I guess it's a software-bug in the display.
No. I'm not sure if HSDPA will work in the example pictured. I was in a hurry to make a phone call so just quickly snapped the screenshot then reset the modem.
Messages will get service unavailable. Incoming ones don't get received until I reset

Yes, I've experienced the same thing a couple of times since LFB on carrier Telia in Sweden.
It reminds me of the phone/modem problems with the SGN which they never fixed before I sold it.

Washington D.C. has no GSM coverage inside the tunnels. Only some stations have coverage. Only Verizon and Sprint with CDMA devices have service on moving trains.

Beijing.
Well 2G is okay. But it sometimes will lose it briefly in the transition from 2g to 3g.
Only Beijing subway line 4 has China unicom WCDMA coverage. the others are limited to 2g at best (except the overground lines, but even they are patchy)

Having updated to the stock LFB ROM and modem (UK, unlocked, unrooted), I'm really perplexed about the behavior of the phone data reception:
(a) 2 weeks ago, I tried using data connection in a friend's flat in Balham (London), could not get ANY data connection all weekend.
(b) Last weekend, data was consistently perfect and fast anywhere in the same flat, all "H+" 8Mbit and lovely.
(c) This weekend, same place but NO reception again, not a saussage. Voice phone worked fine, just no data at all.
And, yes, I've seen "emergency calls only" sometimes even when there is apparently a strong signal.
Back home again (Portsmouth), phone works fine.
On the plus side, battery consumption is wonderfully low!
Can anyone explain what's going on? It feels like the data connection is sometimes reluctant to "log in" or whatever is does! It seems to have a mind of it's own.
Thanks!
You may want to try another modem like DXLF3. It has better data network stability especially in cities or areas with faint signal.
I am planning to upgrade to the LFB, but i am not rooted. Want to be sure if i have problems with the modem signal, do i have to be rooted to install the new modem driver??
Thanks in advance...

Make sure your network data is turned on and data usage settings are correct. As long as your apn's are correct it will work.

Hey,
Since yesterday my phone is always on roaming, i have two questions:
1. What does roaming mean?
2. How to disable it?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Settings>more>mobile networks>data roaming>untick
All I know is that I keep it on and only incur charges if I use it outside my country(which I won't).
Sent from my GT-I9100
But what does roaming exactly mean? It changed just yesterday till now.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Roaming means you are outside of your home network aka abroad.
Odoslané z GT-I9100 cez Tapatalk 2
What are you saying about it.Was it off and came on?.What do you mean "it changed"?.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
If you are talking about the data roaming option in settings that comes only to effect if you are abroad. It's basically telling your phone whether it's allowed to use data traffic while outside of your home network.

I'm not abroad, it changed by itself and I have "R" letter above the signal, Do you mean that now I'm not connected to my network? Why would something like that happen suddenly? And how to change it back?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
No idea how it could happen if you are in your home country. You may try to contact your operator to check what they see in their systems.

Are you on the three network? If so you have dropped off 3 network and gone on the the orange 2g network. 3 have a roaming agreement with orange..
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Why you asked here & didn't contact your carrier in the first instance is beyond me. For whatever reason, your phone is obviously connecting to a network other than your carrier by default.
Why ? Who knows ? Could be a problem with your carrier where you're using your phone, and your carrier has a roaming agreement with another carrier so your phone is trying to use that network as it's the only one available.
Contact your carrier to find out/get this sorted. Nothing anyone here can say to sort it for you.
Roaming means you are not in your home network. Not necessarily you are abroad... In India when you move to a particular region where your network provider has no cell towers, you could still get the signal... This is because they have agreement with other providers there... In this case you will see the roaming symbol in Android. The setting in android phone is just to let the phone know that i would not like to use data network when in roaming. Because carriers charge more than usual for data used in roaming.

Last night I was playing around with Viper Rom. There was a phone info menu with a bunch or settings that had to do with the network settings. The menu to get to this from other ROMs is *#*#INFO#*#*
I changed a setting for preferred network or something and the radio band setting. Now I can't seem to default it. I did a hard reset and even RUU back to stock. Nothing seems to work. Looked into the CDMA workshop settings. Nothing in there seems to help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If you have more questions I will try to answer. I'm stumped on this one. Oh and whenever I try to change the band again and it freezes and restarts.
Please help
Are you getting roaming charges applied ? (You can call customer care and confirm) .....Because after I flashed CM7.2 on my wildfire I used to get the roaming notification and the signal showed a R...roaming. But when I put in my sensation, when it was stock ....I didn't get the roaming thing.
Also when I put another network sim in wildfire I didn't get the R.
Freezing and restart used to happen too when I would get a no signal suddenly. Happened when I tried to choose a network manually.

Phone doesn't work on a SIM. Not sure about the charges, it looks like its just running off Verizon towers. I want to say I messed up the default radio settings that carry over through flashes. Just not sure exactly how to default them

I would like to add to this post that after reprovisioning, I actually get a better, more stable 3G connection. My phone used to jump into 1x mode a lot. Now it's steady in 3G. This may be a fix for that common issue on this phone? Just a shot in the dark. It's significantly helped my battery last longer today.

You can disable the fastdormancy if you want. there is an app developed by GOKHANMORAL called "togle fastdormancy for galaxy s3". you can find it on the forum. but my suggestion is keep it on as it saves battery if you are using GLOBE. I am not aware if it is supported in SMART or SUN network...

from what i understand i suggest you leave it enabled because globe supports fd. it will save you more battery than disabling it as it will draw more battery from your device as it stays on the highest possible cignal type or powerstate. i assume when you said "i dont really use it" is because your not enabling mobile data on your s3?
i rarely enable data on my S3 since I am on prepaid and finals week is here, i need to save some money lol

This is correct although you will get slower overall speeds since it is moving from the lower, battery efficient 3g states to the faster, battery draining h+ states in twenty second intervals.
If battery is your priority leave it enabled, if you want the fastest speeds disable it- but it will drain fast and you will have no signal in areas that only have the old antennas.
Globe tweaked it recently, before it would go all the way down to g, now it idles in 3g.
Personally I leave it enabled as losing signal is not an option for me.

A simple explanation...
1. If your carrier supports the fastdormancy AND you are using DATA frequently than LEAVE IT ENABLED AS IT WILL SAVE THE BATTERY...
2. If your carrier doesnt support the fastdoemancy AND you are using DATA OR NOT, disable it as it will save the battery...

If you move into an area that is only 2g and you have fd disabled you will not have cellular signal. There are still some areas in manila and a lot in the farther provinces that are 2g only. You will not be able to make calls, sms, etc.
Imho it's wiser to leave it on as patel suggests.
But hey those are good speeds! Never had those in any part of manila, laguna or batangas. Looks like the bandwidth is all yours. Lucky you

Disabling fast dormancy essentially turns off the 2g antennas of the phone. You can search this forum and you will see posts from last year stating people losing signal in places like capiz, batangas etc losing cellular signal with fb disabled and getting back the signal when enabling it.

Having gprs registered in your phone doesn't necessarily mean you're in a 2g area only.
You're in an area that has 3g but has shifted you to lower bandwidth most probably due to congestion. It's a different story when you're in an area that has no 3g.
Afaik switching to lower power states is disabling the higher powered antennas and switching to the lower powered ones. The inverse also holds true.
You will only see the difference if you are in a 2g only area for an extended time. Try staying in a 2g only place like some areas of san Juan batangas and you will see that you're the only one with no signal while your friends dumb phones will be perfectly fine.

As ive said. Im currently in davao. But im from a province from surigao del sur.and i tell you theres no such thing as 3g on those areas. My s2 has always been set to only connect to a 2g network as theres no point on setting it to auto switch between gsm and wcdma as there is no 3g network in my province. My s3 is the oposite. Iv set it to only connect on wcdma because data is always enabled on this device. I only have signal loss on my s3 if im in an area where there is no 3g. And both my devices hav fb disabled. I hope this clears everything.
