Warranty exchange- T-Mobile store or HTC? - HTC Amaze 4G

My Amaze is having a touchscreen issue where my touches are not being registered near where the I, K, and M buttons in portrait orientation. Tried wiping and that's not helping so it looks like a hardware issue.
Do I take this into a T-Mobile store and exchange for a different phone or go through customer care or contact HTC directly?

Go through customer care instead its faster to get a phone n there is no charge or wait for them to repair anything u just get another phone

htc will tell you to contact tmobile, customer care will mail you a replacement.
if you're on the premium insurance plan thing, there is a $5 fee for warranty replacement. and it's next day shipping. If you're on regular warranty, they might charge you for shipping, i forget. sometimes they will look for a store to do an exchange for you.

Most stores don't have instore exchanges only certain markets do so just contact T-Mobile its the easiest if you don't have the insurance or extended warranty the charge is 20 with warranty for 3.99 or insurance and warranty for 7.99 its only 5 with overnight delivery

Generally, if you're processing a claim on your one year warranty and do not have the $5.99 PHP insurance bundle they will charge you shipping. However, if you've been paying for insurance the shipping is waived unless you upgrade to express.
Now, if you used Asurion for an insurance claim the shipping is normally included.
Anything else is out of the ordinary.
Just my experience as a T-Mo manager.

If you did an actual insurance claim through Asurion where you paid a deductible for a replacement then I doubt they will care. (This is my opinion, not that of Asurion or T-Mobile.)
From my experience and the way we are taught to sell the bundle. Basically, Asurion insurance will replace your phone whether it breaks on accident or you run over the screen on purpose.
However, if you did an actual warranty exchange with T-Mobile, yeah they'll care. Usually though T-Mobile wont warranty exchange a device with physical damage so I'm assuming you went the insurance route and you should be good to go.

Should I get warranty for my Amaze

So I just purchased Amaze from eBay, now I need to decide if I should get warranty for it through squaretrade Normally I buy it, since phones with eBay don't come with warranty but this time they are quoting me me an outrageous $72 for 1 year, almost 1/5 the price I paid for phone
Build wise the phone looks pretty sturdy and is in mint condition, so wondering if I should get it? How is the general feedback about the phone...are there lot of RMAs
I know about the squeak issue with some phones, but luckily I don't have it and its also covered by HTC since back cover is an accessory so i'm eligible..
You still have HTC warranty. I bought phones from eBay and HTC honored the warranty.
If you have T-Mobile, you can call them and tell them you received the Amaze as a gift and you can add insurance, warranty or insurance + warranty.

As I said, HTC only provides warranty on accessories not the phone
I don't have T-mobile...but do you know how much will just the warranty normally cost through TMO?
EDIT: Just noticed, for rooting/custom ROMS I would have to unlock the bootloader through HTCdev tool, guess it would pretty much void any warranty ?
If it was me, then yep I would be purchasing a warranty, just in case as you just never know man.
Also of course, anytime you root your phone will void a warranty, but can always install the original GB 2.3.4 back on it and be good to go. Heck, I know people that forget to put it back and still are fine, but I would take it back to factory myself.
Good luck!

No. HTC does warranty the phone still.

HTC will honour hardware warranty - provided the damage wasn't the result of software overclocking - even after unlocking the device. Software issues you'd be on your own for with custom ROMs... but I'd assume they'll support you if you revert to stock.
I bought an Amaze off eBay back in January from who I thought was reputable on eBay. Used the phone for 3 1/2 weeks and T-Mobile shut my service off. Phone had a fraudulent IMEI. The guy I bought from refunded me after I shipped it back, but do yourself a quick favor before buying a ST warranty and other accessories. Call T-Mobile, tell them your IMEI and just make sure yours is clean. You'll feel better going forward buying accessories and stuff.

Thanks so much. They did let me add insurance for my "gift" phone (bought from cragslist). I think they can see I've been using the phone less than 14 days and didn't bother verifying whether it a used phone or not.

If that's insurance from T-mobile then I'd remove it right away. The reps are required to get a certain amount of sales per hour and even if you have insurance on your line, Assurion will not cover the phone for damage because the phone was not bought from T-mobile. I was a rep there and seen people get declined because of this same reason. I would call them up and downgrade to warranty only. It's what I use, because I know if I send in a damaged phone that it's still cheaper than sending a phone into Assurion for an insurance claim. The only thing the warranty won't cover is lost/stolen. If you do damage your phone you just don't tell the rep that it's damaged and you'll get a out of warranty fee on a later bill.

Incorrect. As a former rep, I know some loopholes. I bought my Amaze from eBay. My brother cracked the screen when he dropped it on the concrete (idiot) and Asurion sent me a new one.

Yes. When a phone was used and is registered on another account. It'll show the warranty is invalid. If you say it was a gift and add warranty/insurance, they will honor it.

As a former rep, why would you even carry insurance through T-mobile? The warranty is $4 less per month and the OOW(out of warranty) fee is cheaper than doing a claim with Asurion. The highest I seen a OOW fee was $115 for the SGS2 and the Amaze was $105. Also, the OOW fee drops as time goes on, but the Asurion claim fee remains the same high price.

I think you should have to pay for it. After all if its a manufacturers defect you need to deal with the manufacturer. Sprint is offering you a service that allows you to walk into a sprint store and get a refurbished device same day.
So your paying sprint to deal with the defective device and offer you a replacement device.
So your issue for example, you would have to mail your device into HTC, wait for them to diagnose and repair it and send it back.
EVEN with over night shipping thats a day there, a day back, plus shipping costs, now add in the time HTC takes to fix it (they also will not send a loaner phone or swap the device, under the manufacturers warranty they repair yours, unless they dont have parts or is a main board problem, then you get a replacement) your out a week or more if you deal with the manufacturer.
So i think we should be thanking sprint for taking on the financial burden of having to have all these seed stock refurbished devices that we can walk in and get replaced same day for 35, or 50 bucks. I for one am happy they offer it.

That makes no sense if they sell a product they should stand behind it. I work for a tire and service center in Michigan and if we tried to charge people for manufacture defects because we weren't the manufacturer, people wouldn't do business with us. If you don't want to honor a products warranty don't sell it.

We do honor it. Which is why we replace the phone. If you choose to get insurance you avoid this cost. But if you choose not to then the fee applies. Phones are expensive. You can't expect them to switch out these phones for free. Sprint pays HTC to carry them. HTC has no financial burden in replacing their own devices. To say we shouldn't sell a protect we can't guarantee is ridiculous. No electronic can be guaranteed. Things happen. Nothing is perfect. Best Buy won't repair my samsung tv unless I purchase their protection plan. Same thing.
I certainly feel you should have to pay of you go to Sprint for your HTC phones malfunction and YOU made the choice not to insure it. You don't want to pay? Go to the people who made it.

The difference is, if a tire fails, someone can die. If a phone fails, unless it self combusts, you're not likely in any danger.
So what's sprint's justification for raising the price. They still send 'em off to htc to be repaired/refurbished. Most HD manufacturers offer advanced replacement. You have to send in your bad drive within 30 days or they charge the card. Why doesn't htc/samsung/whoever offer this?
I think this is just another way of nickel and diming the customer.
If my Vizio TV fails in the first two years I take it back to Costco and they swap it out for free, the main reason why I bought it from them not best buy. Let's put another way, if your $500 fuel pump fails with in the first year we would replace it free of charge. It's called good customer service.

Sprint replacing a phone for free outside of the 14 day period is stupid.
What does the CARRIER have to replace your hardware when they didn't make the phone.
That makes as much sense as me calling Time Warner to replace my broken tv.
Most electronics now a days tell you to not return device to the retailer and to have the manufacturer replace it.

I see sprint (or any wireless carrier) the same way I see a car dealer. Your car comes with a mfg warranty for some amount of time. During that time you bring it into any dealer of that mfg and they fix it free of charge. A free repair is expected. If they can't repair it, then they replace it. Again, free of charge during the warranty period.

You can see them the way you want, but it still doesn't make it the standard. Difference between sprint and your local Ford dealer is that Ford has a vested interest in that dealer.
HTC has their warranty and no ties to sprint besides selling them a product, sure sprint has its repairs stores but doesn't mean htc likes it.

AT&T HTC One warranty claim = $200+ free....

So... hear me out haha. This is all based on what they told me on the phone but they may tell you something else if you call them.
If you have a 32gb HTC One and file a warranty claim (you get one year free of it through AT&T), they will send you a "like new" device for free, then you have to send yours back to them within ten days.
What they told me on the phone though when I talked to them was that if I don't send my phone back, I have to pay them $210 for my "defective" unit. In reality, the only defect my unit has is that the battery doesn't last all day, I only get about 10 hours out of it.
If you don't want to send them the phone you have back, just keep it and take the charge, then sell your phone or the phone they send you on eBay for $500 and you're pocketing almost $300...
I will say again, I only heard them mention the $210 fee and didn't ask at all about that. If you currently have a HTC One on AT&T and you're having some problems maybe with it, try this out and see if it works.
Thought I would let you guys know. Don't hate haha.
In just guessing but that may result in a bad ESN or what ever it's called for not sending it in??? Maybe not idk but seems like they would be smarter than that...

That's not fraud if your phone is really broken. If they instruct you to send it back when you receive your replacement or pay $200 then you have the option of sending it back or paying $200. However, it would be fraud if your phone works perfectly fine and you are trying to get a replacement you aren't entitled to just to sell your working phone.

Anyone know how the exchange policy works if you used AT&T next to get this phone? I got my dad this phone on the AT&T next plan since he loved playing with mine so much. His keeps rebooting in a boot loop, and has a dead pixel. Stock, and used only for two days.

You could exchange it if he wants a different device, but if exchanging for another m8, they will probably treat it was a warranty issue.
Mine had a defect on the head phone jack. They replaced it on the 14th day without having to pay any fees. They will only charge you if you switch phones. Even if it is just a color change

I bought my M8 at the full retail price.
I exchanged an m8 in a store that I had ordered through their website. The phone was bought through Next and I exchanged it on the 14th day. Whoever said they wouldn't exchange it for another m8 is wrong. If he is within his 14 days they will exchange it for another m8 or even a different device. After that they treat it as a warranty issue.
As a matter of fact, if you are within your 14 days and try to get a warranty exchange they won't allow you. They will tell you you are within your 14 days and should exchange the device.
How do I know this? With my m7 I ordered a 64gb in store.. It was defective.. Stores were not stocking the 64gb, only the 32.. I called to exchange it and they told me since I bought it in a store I had to exchange it in a store.. But no stores had any 64gb.. It was a hellish ordeal.. I had got fed up and tried to get the warranty department to give me a warranty exchange.. They did not allow me to... They said I was still within my 14 days. So if you're within your 14 days they won't even let you get a warranty exchange.

I purchased two S5s through Next, and it was the standard $35 restocking fee to exchange to the m8.

Anyone know how the exchange policy works if you used AT&T next to get this phone? I got my dad this phone on the AT&T next plan since he loved playing with mine so much. His keeps rebooting in a boot loop, and has a dead pixel. Stock, and used only for two days.

Within the 14 day BRE period, all warranty exchanges can be done in store. You don't have to pay a restocking fee, due to the fact there's something wrong with your dad's phone. You don't even really need to bring the original box, though it's recommended.
They might direct you to the warranty center, but should only do so if they are out of stock or you return/exchange outside of the 14 day window.
Get in there right away just to be sure.
They will recharge you a restocking fee if you exchange for a different device, not if you exchange for another m8. And again they will NOT process a warranty claim within your 14 days. Try for yourself.. If someone is within their 14 days call the warranty department.. Make up some BS abut the phone being defective and you need a warranty replacement.. They will tell you they can't process one because you are within your 14 days return period. Also I learned if you had ordered it from the website the 14 days begins at the invoice date.. not the delivery date which is pure BS.. It should be from the delivery date.
You have 14 days to replace the device for a different device or the same one but different color. If they find nothing wrong with your device, then you'll pay a $35 restocking fee(you might not depending on who you get) you'll also pay $35 to switch devices(M8 to S5 or w/e)
Now if you received a defective device from AT&T they can not decline you a replacement. I've ordered many phones from AT&T and replaced them due to damage within 14 days period. No restocking fee was charged to me.
Now unless they changed the policy since then idk

factory defect == restocking fee waived
swapping "just because" == restocking fee.
i swapped out 2 M8s with zero fee, and they were willing to swap more out if i continued to find the same problem (dead pixel). Now im not on NEXT but that shouldn't matter.
Next doesn't affect exchanges or warranty returns or anything like that. The only thing different with Next is how you pay for the device itself.
Just go to the store, and get them to exchange it for another M8, they'll do it for free since the problems you have are a factory defect.

I brought the unopened box that was delivered to my home with the S5 in it to a local store and got it exchanged for the M8 with no restocking fee.
You can exchange device at the store.....no fees if it's the same device. I had gotten an Active and didn't like it so I got charged a fee to swap it out for a 32gb S4. Had a bad S3 and they swapped it out no questions asked.
