Odd maps behaviour - HTC Amaze 4G

I am running quick sense 2.1.2. I don't think this has anything g to do with the
Rom, but I notice a mirror effect in Google maps. The blue arrow points the opposite direction of where the phone is pointing (even when held horizontally), this us happening in places as well with the grey location arrow.
It seems that this issue is only with Google maps and Google places as I downloaded a compass app and it shows North south east and West in the correct directions.
I guess I am just curious if anyone else is experiencing the same

The blue arrow moves with you. So as you turn it turns.
Is this what you're talking about?
I'm having a hard time trying to understand completely what your problem is.

The blue arrow points the exact opposite direction than the heading of the phone. If I am facing due North the arrow points due south. Similarly, if I face east the blue arrow points west.
In places, the same is happening. I can stand with a landmark on my right and Google places points that it is on my left. It is as if Google apps are seeing the directions in "mirror" form.
I am using the most recent maps app
This inversion is only happening in the Google apps, if I use a compass app the compass heading is correct.

If you touch the blue icon, it toggles between the map following your direction and it always facing north. I don't know if this helps.

Same thing here. If I'm standing in my house looking at the cross street directly in front of my house it says I am facing my back yard. If I then walk toward my back yard the arrow will move correctly towards my backyard, but will point towards the street which is not behind me and in front of the front of my house.

You aren't the only one. I just saw my amaze doing this. I'm going to try clearing map data and uninstall updates
Edit: It worked. Compass is not facing the right direction

Google maps 5

I have been messing around with google maps 5 that just got released and it does not have pre-caching, tilt maps, nor 3d. Is it because of the software limitations or is it just me? I can probably opprehend that 3d wont work, but what about pre-caching the maps? Oh yes, I was wondering if it supported vector based rendoring. Sorry if I am in the wrong spot, anyways, merry christmas.
Sent from my FroShedYo.V8-ERIS using XDA App
I have all of that on my eris.
remember: the 3d buildings are only in 100 cities or so, go to new york and you'll see them.
I THOUGHT you were supposed to be able to change the angle/degree of tilt by using two fingers, but alas, that is not working for me if that's what it's supposed to do.
precaching takes time, it uses your most-traversed areas, it learns the areas where your most likely to use it, and then caches it during periods of downtime when you arent using your phone, but still have an internet connection (like the nightly charge). Going off what google says, I suggest you connect to wifi at night when charging too, apparently it works better for the caching. give it a week or two of use and I'm sure you'll see it start to save your locale. you might want to even start over using your gps: get directions for wherever you're going, even if you already know how to get there, it should learn where your most often to use gps even faster.
and yeah, this should definitely go in the apps section.
Yea I was a little late on where I was to post this. It does 3d, but it does not do 3d tilt. When I meant pre-cache I was talking about the place where it is supposed to be which is menu>cache settings<pre-cache options. I want that so it can cache over 3g rather than only on wifi

GPS Signal Strength and Quality

One of the things I really appreciate about my EVO is the strength of the GPS when using Google Navigate - especially after my dismal experience with the Samsung Moment.
Although I've seen mostly positive reviews about call quality, signal strength, processor speed, etc., I haven't seen anyone on the forum comment about the Photon's GPS. Can any of you former EVO users comment on how the Photon's GPS compares to the EVO?
Thanks,
Flipper

I fired it up for the first time the other evening, to get directions somewhere. It got lock in under 30 seconds, which is satisfactory for me. My Evo was inconsistent and definitely took much (with stock drivers).
coming from the Vibrant here and anything is better then what I had. But as far as I can tell GPS locks on and really sticks. It is accurate to as it places me in my house and fallows when I walk around outside.
actually got a lock in my office building through the roof once, but never watched to see if it would wonder.
The gps is very fast to lock on and solid. My evo 3d before the photon was horrendous, wouldn't ever get a accurate reading inside and even outside was bad. My original evo was very good as well, both the evo 4g and photon will get a very accurate reading inside almost instantly and even follows me around when i walk.

My Evo4G was also excellent, but the MoPho is even better. It bested my Evo in all tests I've run.
Gps works great here too! Coming from the OG I noticed that lock ons are faster. Only issue is while in the car dock, and selecting my location the image loads in sections...its kind of crappy but I don't think its a gps issue rather a software issue.

My Photon GPS is horrible, especially compared to my EVO. If I'm driving and put the phone in my lap it looses signal until I hold it up to the windshield or slide back the sunroof cover. My EVO rarely lost the signal once it acquired a lock.

Well, based on everyone else's experiences and their posts on this forum and the android forum, it sounds like you may have a bad phone. If I were you, I'd probably bring it in and have someone at Sprint look at it.

I completely agree, I logged on just now to create a post about this exact thing, not only that I can put in an address and it works great. Then on to the next addresses and it won't even lock, just sits there. I am in sales and I bet no one on these forums uses navigation more than I do. On the photon it just sucks, period. One of the many reasons I am waiting for root. I absolutely love this phone, but the gps sucks.
If someone could post some tweaks maybe that would be great because I'm not trying to do what motorola wants us to do and just reboot every time.
Also, it isn't the phone, I have had two do this same exact thing, and my buddy at sprint let me use his for a few and his ended up doing the same thing.
I think most of the people commenting here have used it maybe twice.

Now when I open Foursquare and go to check in someplace my list is up to date even when I'm in an area I've never been to without having to keep refreshing.

for the guy having problems, could it be you are in some type of dead zone? Or maybe its solar flares? I have not tried much but did want to add that for those testing in your home don't forget to turn off the location setting. The one that will use wifi and/or cell towers to triangulate your location.
My GPS does not work well either. It has been taking about 10 seconds to get a signal, and seems to always have a 1-2 second delay. I had one day I had to turn the phone off and back on to get a signal. I have tried the newest release and am getting the same thing. My EVO got a lock instantly and never had any delays. Even my old Touch Pro had faster GPS locks.

I think you should return the phone because its obviously defective. I'm returning mine because when the phone is shutdown it doesn't startup immediately when I press the power button. It actually takes a minute before I can use it.
Seriously, mine gets a lock in about 10 seconds inside the house while my Evo took about 15 seconds. When I traveled with the Evo and I turn it on in a new city, it could take 30 seconds to lock. I've not traveled with the mopho yet. 10 seconds to get a signal is nothing to complain about.
I have had no issues with my GPS, gets a lock quickly and never loses the signal afterwards. I've used it probably about a dozen times since I've gotten the phone a week ago and hae pretty much exclusively used the Telenav App and not really tried Google Nav.
My GPS is hit and miss
Comparing with my EVO 4G, this Photon GPS is not better. My EVO 4G performed very well. This photon may loose signal during driving in the tunnel but could acquire signal quick enough after leaving the tunnel. I had to disable and enable GPS and it locked right away. It happened several times. Not sure if worth to bring back to store.

Google maps compass is 180 degrees off

Is anyone on stock that could check the direction of the arrow (the blue arrow that marks your location) in google maps?
It seems that quite a few people have the arrow showing their heading off by 180 degrees. E.g. facing straight north, the arrow in maps will point south.
I am surprised more people aren't reporting this...
Try GPS status & toolbox and calibrate you sensor and download A-GPS data.
It solved my GPS tracking problem.
If you are already using GPS status & toolbox, I don't know what to do
Mine is also 180 degrees out!
Ah well Who knows...I just have to remember to go against the arrow. LOL!

Hi My Rom code is 1.43.531.3 and Google Maps version is 5.8.0. Thanks
I'm on stock 1.43.531.3 and maps version 6.0.3. I, too, am having this problem. If cobbcobbdavid is on maps version 5.8.0 and not having this issue, it sounds as if it might be the newest version of maps that is the problem.
I would asssume the issue would need be corrected from Google's end as it is their software that is manifesting the issue.
Now, how does one go about reporting it to them?

I am on QuickSense 2.1.2 and Faux123 kernel. Maps is v6.0.3. I'm not sure what you are talking about. When I am in maps, my arrow points in any direction (close to north) depending on how my screen is oriented. But when I go into Navigate, it adjusts to my position and works just fine. I don't have the 180 degree backwards problem as far as I can tell. Are you saying that if you want to go north, your heading is showing that you are going south? Does Navigation tell you to go in the opposite direction??

I think there is confusion with what this issue is.
In the maps app and places app there is an arrow. That arrow in maps is supposed to always point the same direction the "top" of one's phone points. As one rotates physically, the arrow on the phone is supposed to rotate with you.
This feature is helpful when in a strange city, and one needs to get their direction (i.e. when walking, the arrow will help you determine your direction and the next cross street etc..)
In places, the arrow will point in the direction of the "place." If you are looking for something that is on your "left side" the arrow in places should be pointing toward the left. As you rotate, the arrow will also rotate to compensate for the change in directionality.
The issue with the Amaze is that the arrow is pointing 180 degrees away from where it should. When I stand at the front of my house pointing the top of the amaze to the street that runs in front of my house, the blue arrow in maps is pointing towards my house when it should be pointing toward the street (as that is the direction I am facing).
City centre in my city is NE from where I live, however places shows the arrow pointing SW from where I live to get to down town.
These issues are not apparent when I am driving, as maps can assume your direction based on your movement, however when standing still maps relies on the eCompass in your phone to detect directionality. It is this "static" directionality that is being mirrored, or fed back as 180 degrees away from one's actual direction.
Please call in to HTC, not your carrier on this. The more calls they get the sooner they are likely to fix the issue. I just got of the phone with HTC support and the lady stated there have been some calls on the issue and that they monitor the calls for a specific device and issue.

Meh. That thread just drifts off into "pair it with a phone." The other detailed thread I read was about webos nav. I guess that this is just not a very common need. I mean the touchpad is a bit ungainly to use for road navigation.

I've had great success with a TomTom bluetooth gps puck and BluetoothGPS from the market. Works well with google maps. Now if only Navigation would stop dissapearing....
we used a touch pad with cm7 a few months back on our voyage to Montreal from NYC. Once you load up the directions in google maps you should be fine. Of course we would get directions prior to leaving via wifi and in an emergency (just as an unused backup in our case) we could tether to my phone (also running cm7). As a precaution we just took screenshots of certain areas that we wanted to go to. Coffee shops with wifi are your friend.
Anyway, we were just goofing around but the map was really convenient for me as a passenger and for the driver. Benefit of the screen being so large is that you can show it someone who is nearby and they can easily see it.

Stock with Goodies 2.08. Never has been a problem until today. I have recently upgraded to the latest firmware and radios, but had to downgrade in order to run this particular ROM, which I can't part with. I will try these things you mention.
Still experiencing this issue.
I have since upgraded to the latest firmware.
Any suggestions on trouble shooting for what is causing this or possible tests, fixes, anything!? :silly:
Edit: After using the apps mentioned above, the issue is still present and I notice no fix whatsoever.
Any ideas of that the values are supposed to be? That way I can troubleshoot if I have an issue.
Where are you when you are trying to pick up the GPS signal? A lot of factors play into getting a good GPS signal. How's the weather? Do you have cloud cover or is it clear? Are you inside or outside, near a window?
You can try an app called GPS test to check out your GPS signal. It will give you an indication of how well (or bad) of a signal you are picking up.
Here are two screenshots using my phone. The first is inside about 10 ft away from any windows. The second is about 3 ft from the window. You can see the difference it makes the further you go into a building.

I'm thinking you should be pulling in a better signal if you were outside on a clear day. I believe you should be pulling in 10 ft or better accuracy on a clear day.
Have you tried removing the rear cover and checking the connections to the cover? If this doesn't help, you may have a defective unit.
