I tried the [WIP] build.prop mod in the development section.
My nook only boots to the white screen now, and then turns black. I tried a factory reset, but it still does the same thing, Is there anything else I can go to get the old build.prop file back the way ot was I did rename the old one to build.bak
I have no access via USB. tried taking out my usb card as well. Still nothing.
Reboot 10 times to get factory restore.

Probably you don't followed all the steps or you set wrong permissions.
Factory restore
did a Factory restore at least a couple of times still will not boot beyond forever read screen. , let me know if you have any other ideas.

See below:
There are two different kinds of resets one is a reset the other is a restore.
Please hold down the N and Power button on starting the devices, and do this 10 times. This will cause the device to power up and then power down after getting to the bootloader (the N screen). This will then trigger a factory RESTORE, which will wipe all data, including build.prop.

The 8-10 failed Boots is a Full restore which replaces all the files in /system where a botched build.prob resides so this would be the only restore that would fix this as the more minimal restore on clears userdata and cache...
A full a restore will show green down arrow
A full a restore will show green down arrow?
Then say Factory reset?
Then you hit home
and home again?
and then it say clearing data?
or are there two types of factory reset?

Yes, 2 different types.
Never mind There are two types
tried it again, and this time it reset then rebooted, then it said clearing data again right away. Then then it said restoring factory software. it did not say that the first time.
And it booted like a new nook.
Thanks,
It looks like it should work again.

I came home from work this morning and my wife said my daughter was reading a book and she turned the page and it just locked up. Now when I boot it up it will go to the lock screen, but when I try to slide it to the right it will not do anything, even the clock is at the top left like it should be. Usually you can see the wallpaper on the lockscreen, but now it is just a black screen............
The only thing I can do on the lock screen is just power it off, even then, I have to hold the power button down a couple of times before it will boot up again then it just goes through the normal boot up until it gets to the lock screen and then its stuck again. What can I do to fix this? If I do a factory reset will I have to root it again?
i honestly dont know but a suggestion i see a lot is to do the hard reset which is pressing the n button along with the power button and you have to do it 8 times ill try to find a vid
If you do full factory reset you will loose root.
but the good thing is that its very easy to root
Yeah, I was afraid I would loose everything. I may wait a bit and see if this has happened to someone else before I do anything. If not, I guess I will go ahead and do a reset. I really hate to do that!
have you tried plugging the NT into your computer via the USB cable? I wonder if that would allow you more access?
I would do a factory reset and re-root if necessary. Worst thing that could happen is that you'd have to restore back to 1.4.0 before re-root.
Well I did a factory restore, made sure I was at 1.4.0 and I was, set up everything and connected to the wifi.......downloaded tgps then turned off my wifi. Went through turning on debugging...got that. Started zergy and it noticed my nook since my drivers were already installed. It recognized my nook number and asked if I wanted to root, I entered Y then hit enter. It then restarted my nook and did nothing. My tablet came up with a warning that said I may now move items from my PC to my tablet, please eject nook from computer to avoid file transfer problems. I restarted zergy and it said that my nook is already rooted???? It did not install gapps, launchers or anything.......
I did another factory reset and went through the process again and it did the same thing. I know Im missing something but I dont know what it is. This has happened to me 2 times, once I had to go back and get rid of the update proceedure and reroot and now this. Very frustrating to say the least.
I thought that doing a reset would unroot my nook??? I am wondering if now I have to unroot it and then go back and root it again?

There is more than one recovery process. The nook+power button seems to do a factory reset (reformat and restore /data). The 8 bad boots does a full factory software reinstall (reformat and restore /system and /data).
yea the 8times thing is what i was referring to
*How to make a hard reset - This reset the /system folder to factory (removing gApps, restoring bloatware, removing root, etc)
*How to make a factory data reset (Wipe Data/erase-deregister): Go to Settings> Device Info> Erase and Deregister Device - This will clean/format /data (All your installed apps will be gone)

did you eject your nook when the warning was up?
Yes, I ejected it from the pc. When I plug it back to the pc it gives me the same message.......
At this point, could I just do the one step unroot and then go back and root it again? I will not be able to do anything else to the tablet until Friday because of my work shedule, so I am gathering information until then. Thanks.
Also I was wondering if anyone else has seen this message pop up? I'm almost tempted to mess around with it to see if I can get apk files to install while using the Barnes and Nobel software since it says its rooted, lol. Then again, I don't have the 999 version to block OTAS either.
So I am unlocked and running MIUI
I was in CWM and my dog bumped my arm while I was trying to go to "wipe data"..
Instead I think I went to partition internal sd.
There was no backbutton only a few options
0MB
4MB
8MB
etc
or something like that.
Since there was no back button, I just chose "0Mb" hoping it would do nothing.
Then I rebooted recovery.. but this time instead of recovery it gave me a full white text boot screen, saying "choose and option 1 through 9. You have 5 secs to choose or it will go to "BP" by default". And it listed all the options you would see if you scrolled through them with vol down, all in one list.
I tried to vol down to recovery and choose it, but when I do, it just reloads this menu. I can choose fastboot and RSD and it will load those, but recovery seems to be gone.
I also see the internal storage doesn't show up when I boot the phone and connect to PC.. only my external SD does. So somehow I screwed the pooch. I guess my best bet would be to reflash the recovery through fastboot?
hmm now my PC isn't recognizing my phone in fastboot mode.
I tried rom manager and flashing recovery from within miui.. but it just does nothing.
OK on reboot I tried Rom manager again and it works. It still has that menu on boot, but recovery works now
Did this before. Only solution I came up with is flashing the SBF and starting from scratch. Hope this helps.

i did this exact same thing the other day... I don't know what menu it is that i accidentally got into but it wiped something and my recovery was gone... flashed an sbf and got stuck in a boot loop and finally fixed it by wiping data
ugh
get into RSD mode and then flash the stock Rom..
After installing just wipe data in Stock Recovery mode..
Thats all.. You are good to go...
Make sure you have 5gb free in the drive you Run RSD Lite..
Yea I reflashed stock SBF and now it boots stock photon tho its stuck on "Contacting Network". reboot not helping.
The other day I was trying to back out of the advanced menu and ended up with multiple partitioning options with no back button. Selected one of the options. Lost all my photos
I could have tried to recover the data but decided it wasn't worth it.
I see a topic here with my problem:

I was being lazy. I figured that perhaps I accidentally hit a button combo that caused the back button to disappear. So I figured that a button combo might make it come back. Well I didn't find that button combo. I immediately pulled my battery when it said formatting SD Card but at that point it was too late.

This happened to me because the back button too.........
Sadly, getting the menu to go away is not the main issue, you have actually erased your PDS partition which holds factory hardware information like MAC /bluetooth adr and stuff for the PRL/Data profile updates to recognize your phone.............Flashing the PDS partition from the Atrix Forums will create the partition but we need like a dev to help us figure out a solution for editing the files to work with Sprint software updates and getting all our hardware addresses on there correctly. No amount of flashing/SBF'ing stuff helped to get it working... some users suggest taking it to Sprint..
Oh so thats why I can't update my prl and profile. I had this happen a while ago and I just flashed a custom splash screen. Gonna go back tp stock and start it all over again. And if that menu happens to come up again i'll just pull the battery.

It seems like it would be possible to dd a PDS partition image from a working phone and flash it to the phone with the bad PDS parition via fastboot as long as you knew the partition it needed to be flashed to, although it would have the data of the other phone (as far as bluetooth, MAC addresses). Not sure how to go about editing in the info you need though. Just tossing out ideas

This might help...hope it does.
I had formatted my internal SD which toasted my PDS partition.
I fixed it doing this...

I had the same problem with my next 7 premium se 8gig.
Pop your sd card in.
Boot into recovery mode by pressing the power button and the volume down button at the same time.
When recovery comes up, delete the media partition, clear your cache and restore to factory settings.
Choose the option to restart the tablet.
Once it boots it should be back to life though you will lose everything on it.
Beats having a useless tablet though.
It took me only a few hours to reload all my apps and she's been running fine since.
Good Luck.
I got it to go to recover but once at recovery it says upgrading please wait and sits their.
Exact same issue...
Any luck in resolving this yet? I have google for 16 hrs so far, and tried countless methods of restoring my tablet to it's previous glory...
Any help is much appreciated. :fingers-crossed:

Hi everyone,
I have a Galaxy S II from Bell Canada and it was recently updated via Kies to Android 4.1.2 a couple weeks ago. I've been having all sorts of problems with it since the update, including random freezing, crashing, and so on, so I intended to backup and factory reset this weekend. Before I could do that however, it shutdown and now I can't boot it back up.
Symptoms:
- The phone gets past the Samsung Galaxy S II animation, but then goes immediately to the glowing SAMSUNG logo and stays that way for several minutes before shutting down.
- Battery power is not an issue. Half-full to full battery makes no difference.
- Connecting it to my PC allows Windows 7 to install most of the needed drivers, except it fails on 'MTP USB device failed'. This might simply be because the phone doesn't fully boot.
What I've tried:
- Multiple reboots (shutdown and restart)
- Removing the SD card and multiple reboots
- Wiping the cache partition several times and booting via the stock recovery menu (reached by Volume + Home + Power)
I have backups but from several months ago, so anything I can do to flash the firmware and retain my data would be appreciated. I've looked at other threads but many users seem to have slightly different issues or are with other carriers. I haven't played around with flashing or anything since getting the phone two years ago, so I don't know how much of a difference their steps would be from mine.
The phone is either just inside the warranty period or just outside... I don't have the exact date if that makes a difference here.
Any help tracking down the issue or helping to get it back to functional would be appreciated.
Firstly, from your post it looks your phone is not rooted. If that is the case then i am afraid we are left with not much options to try.
I would advise, if u want to come out of this issue and data is not the concdrn then do a hard reset by getting into the recovery console.
And, if you are rooted than simply reinstall the rom without resetting anything. This will bring back the rom and you will also not loose any data.

That's correct, the phone isn't rooted. I'd like to exhaust all other options before attempting something that will wipe the data... is it possible to determine the exact problem some other way?
Nope. If it were me I'd be doing a wipe (and this wouldn't faze me because I back my stuff up regularly).

Looks difficult to save the data. But you may try, i am not sure it will work.
find out a compatible rooted kernel. Get into the download mode and with the help of odin flash this kernel. (ensure its *.tar file ).
Once done try to boot the phone. if no luck, clear the cache and then again try. Still no luck, then i am afraid you have to hard reset.
Best of luck.
Here we go again.
No sooner did we do a factory reset on my son's phone, but it stopped on us again.
To refresh your memory, my son's phone is a dead stock T Mobile HTC One, never unlocked, never rooted, dead stock.
A week or so ago, it went into a boot loop from which we could not recover. We did a factory reset and everything was fine, for a moment. My son went about reassembling his contacts, music, etc., making sure they were properly backed up this time.
After the factory reset, everything seemed to work fine, for a time. But then the first time my son powered off his phone, charged it overnight while off, and tried to power on again, the PIN unlock screen won't come up, so he can't open his phone.
We can get to the bootloader and to the recovery. Tried wiping the cache from recovery mode, but that didn't help.
Is it time for another factory reset? Is there anything that would have potentially caused both problems loading Android/Sense (the boot loop from before and the failure of the unlock keypad this time) that we should investigate?
I love my own HTC One, but my son's opinion of his is quite different, and it's straining family relationships.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Only info I can find on this suggests another Factory reset.
Do you have any idea what apps he may have installed? I have seen that there is some "beta" keyboard software out there that upon expiration will fail to appear, making it all but impossible to unlock. Of note regarding that is Swiftkey beta software. Their forums have quite a few posts regarding this issue.
Sorry I couldn't be more help. I know of no other way around the pin other than a factory reset.
If you can get the device into fastboot mode plugged into a Windows 7 PC perform the following:
fastboot erase cache
use the volume keys to select bootloader and power to active.
use the volume keys to select factory reset and power to activate.
I will talk to him about apps, but I believe he was using the stock HTC Sense keyboard.
If it's an offending app, will removing the app via his Google account using his laptop and then restarting the phone solve the problem?
Any thoughts as to why this might happen so fast on the heels of the boot loop problem described in my other thread?
Does the Fastboot Erase Cache command do anything different from the Wipe Cache Partition option on the stock Recovery menu? I've tried that already without success.
Thanks for your response.

Same. Erases the /cache partition. I use fastboot personally because, well...ok, I really have no idea why I prefer it. Just one of those things, ya know?
