Here is the list of the first wave of Bell smartphones which will get ICS update.
As you can see, update for Sensation is going to be released in February, and Sensation got a similar hardware as Evo 3D (Evo 3D has more RAM and 3D stuff).
So what do you think guys?

Early March

I think its bs how these updates come out. Can't wait for less fragmentation, every phone needs to be like a nexus.

I don't think fragmentation will ever be less. Android being so open and OEMS like HTC, LG, Samsung and Motorola creating new software to bloat and drastically change the way android looks/feels...coupled with individual carrier bloat...it may get worse but not better. Sad

Regardless of when, I want to see a single HTC device with Android 4.0 just so my expectations are set. Disappointment? Stocky goodness? We'll see.

I'm going to be honest, I'm starting to see less and less financial motivation for HTC to drop ICS on the 3D. If I were to throw a bet on it I think I would bet a very late release or none at all.

they have to since they signed up to be supporting the devices for 18months giving them updates during that time period at the least. Was announced at google's IO long ago.
And if Sprint Exec is right about no LTE phone till later 3rd qtr next yr, you'd think HTC would want to push ICS sooner than later to 3D's in order to keep selling them during the first half of the year next year. I am assuming that the LTE phone will in fact be an HTC device as it would only make sense to do such since they have always been the flagship device for sprint lately. Given that they would push their normal release of "super phones" from june/july like with evo's to late 3rd qtr to match the sprint exec's comments. This creates a larger gap for them to fill and one that they would likely fill by ICS on the 3D.

I would like to be optimistic, and say Feb will be the month, but HTC will release 5 new phones, all with ICS, before they upgrade the first existing phone with an ICS rom. I say mid/late March. And my prediction is the unlocked GSM version will get the update first.

Wrong prediction. Branded devices always have higher priority. Proof is any HTC phone. For example, Legend, a year ago 2.2 OTA was released for vodafone a week before it was released for not branded devices.

HTC is pretty quick about updates... it will very likely be in march/april. no later. maybe earlier.
just waiting for it to drop, i will be patiently waiting for it to be thrown up on here by a dev, rooted, zipped, ready to go.

If all phones were nexus android would be turned into iPhone, one choice one phone
Fragmentation is a fancy word people like to use to sound important, fraction is if your hardware is last generation then you won't get next Gen software upgrades ...economics really

It's funny that we consider 5-6 months "quick". Nexus S updates have started rolling out already while we have to wait halfway to the time that Google drops another version of android. I wish Sprint would get a Nexus before it was dated :-/

"Quick" isn't 5 months from source drop. Half the devs on this board could cook a rom from source given drivers source in a day or two.

Sure it takes time...takes about half a year. Will we get an upgrade to Sense or will we get screwed like we did on the evo.

Though if they are re-doing Sense itself then you have to give them a lil longer.

Vote
I say March.

Ideal future = All phones have AOSP-type ROMs OOTB; Pre-loaded "launcher" from manufacturers can easily be switched to and from.
Real future = Same as right now.
Anyway, I probably won't own the Evo 3D by the time ICS is ready for it; it's a shame but the truth.

Then enjoy what ever other carrier you are switching too as I can't see any other phone Sprint is getting b/w now and when ICS will be on the 3D worth a penny. Only thing worth waiting for is the next flagship phone which will likely be the LTE phones they release in 3rd qtr next yr.

kinda sad we are still waiting yes i understand its still being tested and tweeked
i just think its funny that a gimmick phone gets root first and ITS AND HTC phone
Well they did promised that every phone after the 3D will have a unlocked bootloader. That even means the hero 4G also.
My ''xDU4L C0R3 SH00T3Rx'' shot you down in 3D!
i understand that but why would you have to replace the HBOOT if it came unlocked ?
I understand that HTC is trying to cheap malware and such away from the phone but most people who are going to get it are people downloading infected apps from the market I would think? Does having a locked bootloader protect that? I would also think encrypting everything would take more resources then not? I dont know much but thankfully my flashing withdraws will stop soon

My bad Cheesy. My previous post means nothing due to the fact that i dont even believe that it shipped s-off. if it did there would be no reason to check and make sure it deosnt say s-on or replacing the HBOOT for that matter. So your OP does make sense and rings a bell. I guess HTC went back on their word again, either that or they thought the CHA CHA wasnt really that important to unlock.
Well since my EVO 3D is going back on Tuesday and i am waiting on the SGS2 to come out i won't miss the playing around with root from HTC and the Dev's...I am sorry but i do not believe S-OFF was leaked and went on youtube they are not that big that they would have leaks.
So enjoy and hope you guys get the root soon from either one of the sources.

You don't believe it? There is video proof. And it wasn't a leak per se, one of the members just accidentally posted the video publicly. S-OFF is coming soon, probably within a week or so. Sooner than the GS2 is coming to Sprint. So if it is a matter of not wanting to wait...I'd reconsider.

Not flaming but very curious. What does your last two post have to do with the topic @ hand. Secondly, why would a group of developers who have been on the android scene and responsible for previous s-off exploits have to lie and manipulate the android community to gain brownie points. Seems out of character and a first time ever in developer history as far as I know.Maybe you should do a little research before making poor assumptions.

If I've said it once I've said it a million times. Samsung Android phones are garbage, the only savior was the Nexus S. Everything else was crap.
I've yet to see one with completely functional GPS, a radio that works, a build quality that doesn't seem like some dollar toy you buy from china, capacitive buttons that work properly, hardware that properly reads battery levels, ect ect ect. Jesus man, Samsung can't even get the font on their lock screen right, You see the top 1/2 of each letter of the month, and only 3 letters max will show up
That is just the basics. The real issues run so much deeper.

The SGS2 GSM has been doing very well. There is not going to be a lot of difference from gsm to cdma and again if all fails without spending a dime i can come back to the 3D if i wish and maybe by that time HTC OR THE DEV'S might stop playing around with S-OFF so i do not lose out i try out the photon for 45 days free sell it get the SGS2 try it out most likely keep it due to the phone being better but if not the can i can always switch back.
You realize you have one chance to do a 30 day I don't like my phone exchange?
Good luck with the SGS2, they said the same thing about the regular SGS and that phone was a pile.

As someone who has tried both brands multiple times in the distant past, recent past and very recently I am going to have to call bull****... True, any brand of anything has its pros and cons, but when comparing samsung and htc htc doesn't even come close to samsung in the problematic-issues category.... There are some issues that go back many generations of samsung smartphone that seem like they will never get resolved.

Oh well better late then don't getting it at all. If you really want ICS already then just run an custom rom with ICS.
Just pointing out, the OP is in Moscow...the email from HTC was directed at a Moscow user. Europe's rollout will be on a different schedule, and America's will be on yet a different schedule. Rollout will not be on the same date worldwide.
and i think the device list gets them first, in order
so EVO3d is like, second last ?
It's insane to me that the custom ROM community can produce multiple ICS ROMs without access to any of HTCs resources well before HTC can release a single ROM.
I can only think of 3 possibilities:
They have less than one person (per device) working full-time on the updates.
HTC employs the worst developers on the planet.
They wont let release ICS updates until they've sold new phones with ICS for a couple months.

The only reason they aren't feature complete is because of closed source HTC drivers.
Anyway, I really don't think that takes away from my argument. HTC will release ICS once they are sure it will not hurt sales of new devices. It's also the reason we wont see Sense 4.0.
It can't be time or cost effective to build ICS with Sense 3.6 and ICS with Sense 4.0. There is little in Sense that is hardware dependent. It's ICS that needs to support the hardware. It would make more sense to have one code base with slight variations for each device.

I don't know. Maybe AT&T made them do it, so they could have a flagship ICS phone like Verizon. If that's not the reason, what possible incompetence would cause it to take this long. Maybe they just don't give a ****...

If one of our devs release a buggy rom we tell them and they can fix it because we're understanding.
But if a carrier releases a buggy rom they get sued and lose customers, and also give the particular device a bad name

I ended up giving my girlfriend my Evo3D and switching back to my old Samsung Epic 4G (the slider one) - it's slower, bulkier and has less memory but damn ICS runs smooth on it and everything works. 4G, Cam, etc... I have yet to have a single issue after 2 weeks of heavy use.
Even still, I miss my Evo3D but not enough to go back to using gingerbread.
Whatever. I'll be getting the evo 4g lte soon anyway. I'll get by with mikrunny until then.

I'm still happy with Sense 3.5. I honestly don't get why many people are so desperate in having ICS.
If it's ready for our device then we will get the update, but I can not think off many things that need ICS. And if you willing to lose the 3D feature and camera then I suggest flash Virtuous S4V Beta2.
Biggest bugs are: 3D not working and camera, rest everything works. But I'm not willing to lose features just for having already ICS.

Really?? I think you are wrong. Sprint 6 months ago released the GB rom for the OPTIMUS S. That "update" borked the charging, ear piece volume and other things. Sprint had to PULL THE UPDATE and have customers DOWNGRADE their phones back to Froyo. Sprint didn't get sued considering that rom was buggy as hell. They actually JUST re-released the update starting yesterday.

I know it will be a while before lte gets to my area... but when it does, I will say goodbye just in time for a cheap price on the SGS3.
Thanks for this thread. I will actually be staying until a more worthwhile phone is released. The 3vo runs like a dream on ICS. although i gotta say. development for the 3vo is non-existent compared to the HD2. But i love it. i'll keep it til early 2013. If i buy a new phone before then, i'll keep the 3vo to play around with development-wise.
That's one reason why i bought the 3VO is because it was only 269€ so it won't be AS DIFFICULT to convince the wife that i need a new one when the time comes

Hmm..... This leak business is making it harder for me to believe att is making any effort to get the official out. Come on att, get with the times.

IM HAPPY lol
UPDATE in OP
Even if AT&T isn't making a huge effort to release it, maybe this means it will be released as 4.0.4 instead of 4.0.3 or 4.0.2 like other devices? :3

I wonder how long it will take before it actually leaks. I know it's not under DesignGears control (Not bashing him at all).
Last time the "It's going to leak" thread like this one got closed after a week, so I wouldn't hold your breath.

You must not have been around very long. AT&T is about a year behind on updates and when/by the time they get around to it.. Leaks for 2 versions newer have been out.

Over and over I keep seeing everyone blaming ATT. Canadian carriers have not released it either. Maybe it is samsung and not our carriers. Maybe samsung is still working on a kernel issue and it is not ready. And now a new leak is about to be released. ATT is producing these leaks?? I don't think so, it is samsung. And no way is ATT a year behind on updates. That comment is absurd. There are many non branded European phones for samsung and HTC still waiting on the ICS update too. So much easier for some of you to just point the finger at ATT.

This.
Or, it could be that the 3rd party app devs that Ma Bell allows in are having problems getting their apps working right alongside TW or the S-Pen. Or maybe someone at the top says they want a nice S-Pen game or maybe...
LOL, point is, there may be one really stupid reason or twenty really good reasons. I just don't think that AT&T worries about it that much, it's not like they are banking on ICS being a reason for more people to buy the Note.
We only see ATT leaks. Where are the Telus, Bell, and Rogers leaks?

Why would ATT be worried about this update? It is not really a factorable selling point anyways. For every one person here on XDA waiting for the update there are a 1000 others who buy and use the note as it is and could care less about an ICS update.
For what ever reason it is not officially released really doesn't matter. It will be released soon. And I would rather wait for a ROM that works flawlessly than have it brick my phone as past Samsung updates have done.
But the issue at hand is this, the note was released not long after ICS and was sold as "Update-able to ICS in first quarter 2012" and it STILL isn't. And we are just about into Q3 with no end in sight. It's the same issue that Infuse (which I bought first) users had getting Gingerbread!! So now, ATT/Samsung has the Skyrocket & Note that were to be updated Q1 and are waiting. And there seems to be no rush because both are pushing new phones with ICS and when you ask you get "Just upgrade your phone". Neither are pushing to get the update out there, because both want you to purchase new hardware out of contract so they make more money. It's a pathetic way to do business to be honest. At least with Verizon I had updates on my Droid's (Droid, Droid 2, Droid X, Droid X2) in a timely manner. So it looks more like carrier & manufacturer in bed to MAKE the users that won't root & update pay for the update to keep the coffers happy.

I would like to see proof on this "Update-able to ICS in first quarter 2012" for the AT&T Galaxy Note. The only actual direct response I saw was a yotube video from the Samsung USA marketing director, and they do not give a date:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcoW7sh-FBk&t=2m40s
Droid x, Droid 2, and Droid X2 are Motorola phones. Not Samsung. Samsung and HTC also have a larger diversity of phones to update. Not sure what timely means? Like I said many other models, carriers, and manufacturers all over the world still have not released ICS on many phones. But I guess the whole world revolves around ATT. Then I remember the Galaxy S series. All US carriers had their versions. And Samsung had 1 helluva time getting Gingerbread updates out on these phones. And that just wasn't ATT? Had to send back an Epic and a Captivate that bricked from an official release.
To Samsung, ATT, or whoever is working on this update, take your time and get it right. Do this for those that root, develop custom ROMs , or use an unrooted phone.

But as of yet, there hasn't been any mention of a special function, correct?
I went into my local vzw corporate store to look at upgrading to the S4. The manager told me that an LG rep came today and told them that the demos will be available in two weeks.
I'm considering waiting for the G2 but can't get over the non removable battery and no SD.... I might take the plunge and get the S4. Either way I'm curious to test this phone out.

My S4 is going back tomorrow once I reset it and box it up. I decided to wait for the G2 arrive and GN3 to be announced at IFA so I can get a better understanding. All I need to know is that Verizon isn't going to screw us and not offer a 32GB, heck I would love a 64GB but we know that WON'T happen on Verizon. I also don't expect it until at least Black Friday :|
I don't know why, but I'm excited for this phone. Anyone have experience with LG devices in the past? Have they ever had much support for cyanogenmod? This thing would be sweet with stock android...I think so at least

You should be excited, this phone looks amazing. I've tried my sister in laws OG optimus and it was garbage but that was many moons ago. The fact that they made the last nexus phone gives me high hopes.

I am looking FWD to this phone and I will probably be upgrading my S3 for this phone. It has better specs than anyother phone out there right now. The only other phone I might consider is the new Note 3, but I don't think it is coming to VZW. I think the only downside to this phone is the no SDCard input which makes me want to get the 32gb one if I buy the LG G2.
So I am on the fence. Get the HTC One in a few days time when Verizon finally releases it or wait just a bit longer for this bad boy?
Since Verizon is getting exclusives I would think they would rush this device to the door unlike how they handled the HTC One.
Anyone have an idea when they might start selling this? In a couple months? Late Sep? October?

I'm sure the N3 will be on Verizon, the N2 sold like wildfire for them and Samsung has more carrier leverage than any other manufacturer besides Apple. No way would Sammy let the biggest U.S. network drop their second-best selling phone series.

Most likely October, they said it would take a month to six weeks to send review units to the news outlets, which usually happens a couple weeks before public release.
As far as this vs. the One, it just depends on what you value more. This has a bigger battery, bigger screen, and more powerful processor. The One has better speakers and design. Also you have to consider that development will be more active on the One. It will most likely be more popular with HTC's upcoming marketing push, plus once it's bootloader is unlocked you'll be able to port all the other ROM's already available for it.
I'm not sure how active the community will be for the One on Verizon. People are saying the device could be locked down to hell and with it already being 4 months old maybe developers will just wait till the next big thing. That being the Note 3 or the G2.

Hopefully the lockdown isn't as bad as the s4 but as far development goes with APN editing you can port any of the ROM's already available.

Sure hope so.
I'm ready to upgrade from my razr and the G2 is looking like the #1 contender for my next device. The Note 3 also looks great, but might be a little big for my taste. With the G2 packing a Snapdragon 800, Adreno 330 GPU, large battery, great camera, and 32gb of storage I should be happy with it for awhile. Only thing i'm worried about is android os updates. With this being released on all 4 major U.S. carriers and LG's most anticipated device yet I can't imagine it not getting at least the next few android
updates.
The G2 is launching with 4.2.2 out of the box correct?
