Verizon to release the RAZR Max(x)? - Motorola Droid RAZR

I heard about this a while back, and thought nothing of it, cause they were only available in China, but it looks like Big Red is marketing the middle class of the 3 variants as the RAZR Max.
http://phandroid.com/2011/12/16/dro...tem/?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pulsenews
I like the 13mpx camera, and 720p display, but I don't think it's enough for me to make a big stink about upgrading. The REAL question is: Will it be running ICS upon it's release? If so, it's good news for us!

wow if that has a 4.5" screen with a 720p resolution and is the same size as the current razr, it is going to be nuts and i am going to be mad

Since I got in on the 1c Amazon deal, I can't really be frustrated about the other options.
I'd probably prefer a nexus, but not for $300 more. Same with the Razor Maxx. Now if Amazon offers it for 1c the day after my 1 month exchange time is up... then I'll be a bit frustrated.
I figure get the most I can out of the Razr for 2 years and then whatever is around then will be amazing.

Lol! I got mine from Amazon for a penny too, and knowing how marketing and sales teams tend to work, I wouldn't be surprised if something like that happened. It's not likely, though, and I can't say I'd be all THAT frustrated, since I love this one so much! I'm not a big fan of the Nexus either, I think our RAZR is pretty superior in build quality, and the rest of it isn't enough to make me lust after it since we'll be getting ICS too...

Ah, just wait till mid jan, there will be lots of better devices on the way. Enjoy what you have now and don't fret about the future, there will always be one.

Google really should limit the number of devices allowed to be released in a set period by one manufacturer. One of the biggest complaints I've heard from friends and others I've talked to is that there are so many different Android devices and any device you get is outdated nearly immediately. Each manufacturer should be forced to come out with one flagship phone and be required to keep it for a certain time period before the next model release. This would make them think twice before rushing a new device out and actually take the time to release a proper device with all the best specs

Highly doubt that it would come launched with ICS. Figure SGS2 would get it before the max, or our razr.

we're all gonna be fuming when quad core phones start rolling out, watch.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA App

Used to the "new phone" being old news in a month or two but if the razrmaxx was like the China variant I would be just a tad upset. Seeing as I had to convince big red to send me the razr for free to replace my months old bionic because of constant issues I doubt I could do it again with the maxx. Meh, either way i'm happy for now. And ya I probably will be fuming when quads roll out but so goes tech, new today ancient tomorrow.
Sent from my DROID RAZR

I was comparing the dates listed for the phones in the "leak" to their actually release date and there is about a 6 wk delay. So I'd guess that we see the Razr Maxx the last week in January (6 wks after 12/15/11.) That puts it about 10 weeks after the Razr, which was about 10 weeks after the Bionic.
Is Moto really on a 10 wk update cycle- that is insane.

For example, the Droid 3 was released 6 weeks after 5/24/11, and the Razr was released 6 weeks after 10/1/11.

Not insane. That is awesome. Means you can get a new phone every 10 weeks. Better than the alternative that Apple provides of 1 new (and usually disappointing) phone per year.

You would still have options. There is more than one manufacturer of Android phones. All I'm saying is limit it per manufacturer. With Samsung, HTC, and Motorola that'd be a guaranteed of 3 flagship phones out at once (4 if LG would release something that actually is, well, impressive)

Awesome that you are buying a new phone for full price every 10 weeks for just a few changes? I'd rather wait 20-30 weeks, pay the price, and get a greatly upgraded device.

Awesome that you "can" buy a new phone every 10 weeks. No one is forcing you to buy one that frequently. Choices/options are a good thing. In your case, you can still buy one every 20-30 weeks and get a greatly upgraded device. In fact, even better that during that time there were 2-3 new devices released!

The only downside to so many new models is it means that the market gets flooded with android variants. This makes it harder for developers to get their software to work cleanly on all phones- which is one of the few clear advantages of iOS.

Here is the list of the first wave of Bell smartphones which will get ICS update.
As you can see, update for Sensation is going to be released in February, and Sensation got a similar hardware as Evo 3D (Evo 3D has more RAM and 3D stuff).
So what do you think guys?
Early March
I think its bs how these updates come out. Can't wait for less fragmentation, every phone needs to be like a nexus.
I don't think fragmentation will ever be less. Android being so open and OEMS like HTC, LG, Samsung and Motorola creating new software to bloat and drastically change the way android looks/feels...coupled with individual carrier bloat...it may get worse but not better. Sad

Regardless of when, I want to see a single HTC device with Android 4.0 just so my expectations are set. Disappointment? Stocky goodness? We'll see.
I'm going to be honest, I'm starting to see less and less financial motivation for HTC to drop ICS on the 3D. If I were to throw a bet on it I think I would bet a very late release or none at all.

they have to since they signed up to be supporting the devices for 18months giving them updates during that time period at the least. Was announced at google's IO long ago.
And if Sprint Exec is right about no LTE phone till later 3rd qtr next yr, you'd think HTC would want to push ICS sooner than later to 3D's in order to keep selling them during the first half of the year next year. I am assuming that the LTE phone will in fact be an HTC device as it would only make sense to do such since they have always been the flagship device for sprint lately. Given that they would push their normal release of "super phones" from june/july like with evo's to late 3rd qtr to match the sprint exec's comments. This creates a larger gap for them to fill and one that they would likely fill by ICS on the 3D.
I would like to be optimistic, and say Feb will be the month, but HTC will release 5 new phones, all with ICS, before they upgrade the first existing phone with an ICS rom. I say mid/late March. And my prediction is the unlocked GSM version will get the update first.

Wrong prediction. Branded devices always have higher priority. Proof is any HTC phone. For example, Legend, a year ago 2.2 OTA was released for vodafone a week before it was released for not branded devices.
HTC is pretty quick about updates... it will very likely be in march/april. no later. maybe earlier.
just waiting for it to drop, i will be patiently waiting for it to be thrown up on here by a dev, rooted, zipped, ready to go.

Fragmentation is a fancy word people like to use to sound important, fraction is if your hardware is last generation then you won't get next Gen software upgrades ...economics really

It's funny that we consider 5-6 months "quick". Nexus S updates have started rolling out already while we have to wait halfway to the time that Google drops another version of android. I wish Sprint would get a Nexus before it was dated :-/

I say March.
Ideal future = All phones have AOSP-type ROMs OOTB; Pre-loaded "launcher" from manufacturers can easily be switched to and from.
Real future = Same as right now.
Anyway, I probably won't own the Evo 3D by the time ICS is ready for it; it's a shame but the truth.

Then enjoy what ever other carrier you are switching too as I can't see any other phone Sprint is getting b/w now and when ICS will be on the 3D worth a penny. Only thing worth waiting for is the next flagship phone which will likely be the LTE phones they release in 3rd qtr next yr.

Sprint drops Evo 3D

Not sure if anyone is aware but Sprint no longer carries the Evo 3D. You can go to their site and look and the Evo 3D is no longer in their line-up. Some retailers still have some in stock, as of now RadioShack is offering the Evo 3D for $29.99 for new upgrade or add-a-line.
lmao! umm yeah. that's been the story for over 2-3 months now. lol. But oh well, you just now figured it out. Discontinued a long time ago. Sadly, the Evo 3D really is a great phone. But they can't just have 60 phones in their lineup. wish they could keep this one.
they need to grow a sack.
with ICS, the device should be a front runner, and HTC devs should have overclocked the GPU a tick to keep it up with other devices coming out. They could have kept selling the damn things, for the same price, it's all about how you market a product... and with hardware, as always, the performance is only as limited as the restricting software loaded to it.
truly disappointing. with ICS available, they could still be marketing these devices at 100 bucks a pop, even more, and people would still be buying them up.

None of this matters if the phone doesnt sell. It clearly didn't meet their expectations on the sales end which is why they elected NOT to put 3D on the next Evo. Doesn't matter what the hardware is, if people aren't buying it they aren't going to keep paying HTC to make them. Pretty simple business practice there.

The GS2 killed that phone. I had the 3d and figured it be just like my OG evo and i would keep it for a year. I got really bored with the phone. It was like they sold us a cool 3d phone and said have fun go find tour own 3d stuff lol. The phone didnt sell bc it wasnt that big of a difference from the original evo except the 3d and well there wasnt alot of 3d stuff available so what was the point in getting it. The GS2 how ever was thinner faster sexier and had a way better camera. The day the GS2 hit the shelves the 3d was done. I jumped ship asap

Marketing ICS
The general public seems to be a little uninformed about android versions. I work at best buy mobile and often used android version as a selling point (Especially when the Galaxy Nexus came out with pure ICS). However I don't emphasize software version as much now since most consumers have no earthly idea what it means. even after explaining, most customers respond with a lack of enthusiasm: "oh... that's neat..."
For myself and probably many power users, It would have made sense to release ICS earlier on the E3D so it could have a better edge on the competition, (iphone, Gs2), but the general public... Android versions don't seem to motive them as much. the early move to ICS would have translated to insignificant increases in sales to justify the release.
Atleast on Iphone instead of saying "The new 5.0/5.1" you can just say, "it's loaded with icloud." Consumers respond a lot better to that. even though I like selling androids better. especially after apple screwed up my evo LTE pre-order (was supposed to get it day after my birthday)

You know I don't have my head up Sprint's butt or my face constantly glued to XDA. So when someone makes a post that may be a little behind or in the wrong forum, coming out and try to make fun and humiliate them only pushes people away from the site. Next time show some courtesy and some decency and correct them in a respectful manner. Some people such as myself didn't know this until I went to add-a-line and saw it was no longer offered, others may see this post and find the same info and see a good sale for a great phone.

Another point is that HTC screwed up on this phone. About 70 percent of the people who've had this phone say its glitchy. I inherited this phone from my dad and when he had it, it would reboot or shut off by itself. Had it not been for it glitching out all the time my dad would'be kept it. And if a lot of people weren't hearing such things it wouldve been more popular.

What phone will you be going to/did go to after the X2?

Thought this would be a fun thread.
I'm interested to see what phone people are going to after enduring the x2 for any amount of time.
Personally, I'm thinking about the Note 2, HTC "mystery 5" 1080p" phone, or a nexus (although there are pretty much no details on any of those yet).
I got a Nexus. I'll be getting the next nexus when it drops.

My contract isnt up until April of next year. So unless there isnt anything better out by then (which I'm sure there will be), I will get a Nexus since that is what I really want now. But honestly, the newest Motorola Phones that were just announced dont look bad. Especially if their boot loaders are unlockable and they give me 100 bucks towards it. But I just have to wait and see what comes out when my contract is up. Right now, I'm leaning towards nexus.

I think that if you're on Verizon you have to get a developers edition of a motorola phone in order to get an unlocked bootloader.. I do like the looks of the Razr M, but I'm not really feeling spending an extra $500 for something we should be able to do in the first place. Damn Verizon.

They were. It looks as though so far that tool works for every carrier besides the big V. This article shows only the dev editions getting the bootloader unlock as of now. I'm sure that can change, but I don't trust VZW or Moto until it happens.
Also, what would the difference be between the dev edition and regular edition if both could be unlocked..?

One thing I like about my DX2 is the feel. It's sturdy, manly. When I got the SIII, the first thing I noticed was how cheap it felt. I know it's a capable phone, but it felt like a toy phone for a kid. Anyway, sold it and still haven't found anything else I like. With that said, the HD developer edition will probably be in my hand come the winter holiday season.
I'm going for the droid razr HD. That's a sexy phone lol
I'm definitely not going back to Motorola. I like the SGS3 or Note 2, I might try the Note 2 esp if it does really come to VZW. Whatever I get has to have JB preinstalled. I like the fact that both phones have 2GB of RAM, it seems to "future-proof" whatever updates coming from Google. (I know updates are not guaranteed however)
Depends on what cspire has in an year and a half. Either the sg3 or the photon q

I went into my local vzw corporate store to look at upgrading to the S4. The manager told me that an LG rep came today and told them that the demos will be available in two weeks.
I'm considering waiting for the G2 but can't get over the non removable battery and no SD.... I might take the plunge and get the S4. Either way I'm curious to test this phone out.

My S4 is going back tomorrow once I reset it and box it up. I decided to wait for the G2 arrive and GN3 to be announced at IFA so I can get a better understanding. All I need to know is that Verizon isn't going to screw us and not offer a 32GB, heck I would love a 64GB but we know that WON'T happen on Verizon. I also don't expect it until at least Black Friday :|
I don't know why, but I'm excited for this phone. Anyone have experience with LG devices in the past? Have they ever had much support for cyanogenmod? This thing would be sweet with stock android...I think so at least

You should be excited, this phone looks amazing. I've tried my sister in laws OG optimus and it was garbage but that was many moons ago. The fact that they made the last nexus phone gives me high hopes.

I am looking FWD to this phone and I will probably be upgrading my S3 for this phone. It has better specs than anyother phone out there right now. The only other phone I might consider is the new Note 3, but I don't think it is coming to VZW. I think the only downside to this phone is the no SDCard input which makes me want to get the 32gb one if I buy the LG G2.
So I am on the fence. Get the HTC One in a few days time when Verizon finally releases it or wait just a bit longer for this bad boy?
Since Verizon is getting exclusives I would think they would rush this device to the door unlike how they handled the HTC One.
Anyone have an idea when they might start selling this? In a couple months? Late Sep? October?

I'm sure the N3 will be on Verizon, the N2 sold like wildfire for them and Samsung has more carrier leverage than any other manufacturer besides Apple. No way would Sammy let the biggest U.S. network drop their second-best selling phone series.

Most likely October, they said it would take a month to six weeks to send review units to the news outlets, which usually happens a couple weeks before public release.
As far as this vs. the One, it just depends on what you value more. This has a bigger battery, bigger screen, and more powerful processor. The One has better speakers and design. Also you have to consider that development will be more active on the One. It will most likely be more popular with HTC's upcoming marketing push, plus once it's bootloader is unlocked you'll be able to port all the other ROM's already available for it.
I'm not sure how active the community will be for the One on Verizon. People are saying the device could be locked down to hell and with it already being 4 months old maybe developers will just wait till the next big thing. That being the Note 3 or the G2.

Hopefully the lockdown isn't as bad as the s4 but as far development goes with APN editing you can port any of the ROM's already available.

Sure hope so.
I'm ready to upgrade from my razr and the G2 is looking like the #1 contender for my next device. The Note 3 also looks great, but might be a little big for my taste. With the G2 packing a Snapdragon 800, Adreno 330 GPU, large battery, great camera, and 32gb of storage I should be happy with it for awhile. Only thing i'm worried about is android os updates. With this being released on all 4 major U.S. carriers and LG's most anticipated device yet I can't imagine it not getting at least the next few android
updates.
The G2 is launching with 4.2.2 out of the box correct?

What will keep you from buying the LG G4?

1) No removable battery
2) No microSD
Things that would make me very unhappy:
1) If the phone gets any taller or wider
2) If it stops supporting Qi
3) if it ditches the curved back
Things that would make me very happy:
1) They shrink the bezels even more
2) Verizon doesn't logo it up
3) They make an iPhone quality fingerprint scanner on the back power button that will work while knock code is still on too
4) Ditch the LG skin
5) More powerful IR blaster
6) 1080p resolution if it means better battery life versus 1440p
Oh my. Yes

Well, considering I just upgrade to the G3 in December, not having an upgrade for two more years pretty much prevents me from upgrading to the G4! LOL!

I'm in the same boat. Got my G3 in August so I'm stuck with that for a while.
I don't see how people can justify buying the next new iPhone, Galaxy S or LG's flagships every year.
I don't feel like the jump from the G3 to the G4 is going to be enough to get me to upgrade.
The HTC One M9 will keep me from buying the G4.
My 2 year contract.
Satisfaction with my current phones.

Buy new device, sell old one on eBay for small loss; it amounts to renting a phone for $100 a year.
My crack habit. Sorry OP!
Every phone up until the my g3 had a custom recovery available thanks to developers figuring out how to by pass the bootloader or unlock it before I bought it. Whereas the G3 wasn't for about the 1st month I owned it and it drove me nuts because I am a flash aholic so I can't wait to see what the G4 is like, but this time I'm going to wait until the or it gets a custom recovery!
Unless it had a minimum of 64 GB of internal storage, there's no way I'd get any smartphone without a MicroSD slot.
I can't think of anything they could add so maybe working on size a little big not sure thats possible though. They can make the screen go brighter that seems to be one of the bigger complaints with the g3. I really have been lucky with not having to many issues. last year I jumped through the big 3 phones and ended up with g3 but I dont see a reason to try the other 2 as of right now.
While on the subject of possible weakness in the G3, my two main although relatively minor complaints and room for improvement are:
1. The notification LED is not noticeable unless I'm looking directly at it. For comparison, although the Galaxy S2's was too big and cartoony, the Galaxy S3's was perfect. I could see it out of the corner of my eye but it wasn't obnoxious. The problem might not be the size on the G3, it might be how deep inside the LED is, limiting it's visibility at anything but near direct angles.
2. Laying on it's back on my work desk or elsewhere, I never hear or feel the vibration, which I have set for all notifications. I theorize that the curved back, which I like very much, keeps the vibration from being noticeable due to the very small area of contact between the back of the phone and the desk surface. I don't want to keep it flipped over, I prefer it on it's back, I don't want to have it flipped over AND turn on the camera flash notifications, and from what I've seen without modification, the screen lighting up temporarily for notifications isn't that noticeable either.
The g2 had bad sound quality. The g3 has even worse sound quality.

I dunno. I am so disappointed with the Nexus 6 launch. Its still nearly impossible to get this phone and its still pretty pricey. I am disappointed that Verizon never formally launched it.
If the LG G4 has 4gbs of ram, I would without a doubt sell my g3 and get the g4.
But its looking like the galaxy s6 and htc one m9 both only have 3gbs of ram.
Why do I want more? To make it future proof. My lg g3 performs blazingly fast with Illusion 5.5 5.0.2 based rom. No major issues.
I would say that if motorola and lenovo release a padfone like device I would jump on that. Or ya know, if the Droid Turbo finally gets root... ha ha.
Do we have any concrete info on the G4?
I Got my G3 back in September, its a champ. I see no reason to upgrade right away.
With Bump out, the ability to run custom kernel/ROM, on 5.0 btw, so again, no reason to update. I love my phone.
I didn't think I would be here saying that coming from the Nexus 5. The root and rom method is so seamless and the ROMs so stable, running BlissPOP 2-20 here.
I would like a more premium feel to the device, but o'well. I can run anything I want on this thing, no problem.
...but do we have any info other then the couple concept renders, that are confirmed?
Ugh. It's getting bigger. But just barely. I so wish they would have wen the other way size wise.

Selling this thing on Ebay wouldn't even give me enough to buy out of my contract lol, let alone buy the new one lol
It's definitely be closer to $200 for me personally by my math, and I'm perfectly happy with my G3. Any device without a removable battery, a micro SD slot, and root and bootloader unlock is a device you can count me out of haha To each their own

Verizon LG G3 's are going for $315 ($400 mint) on swappa. Assuming G4 is $600, that's $285 you would pay for a new one. I would gladly pay an extra $85 to stay out of a contract (especially since I'm still on an unlimited data plan).
