[Q] Just can't find a phone I like - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Back in November of 2009 I was done dealing with AT&T's horrid network in Chicago so I gladly paid an ETF, sold my iPhone 3G, and snapped up a Motorola Droid. It was a phenomenal device that I knew I had to own once I played with it. I bought it the day it came out. Two years later it is dying a slow death. So after months of waiting, I went to a VZW store today and tried a Galaxy Nexus for myself since it felt like the logical "upgrade" from the OG Droid. It was very underwhelming with its mediocre build quality (too plasticky) and ICS just didn't blow me away.
I'm really at a crossroads on which phone to select because I feel like nothing out these days can hold a candle to my OG Droid. I'm even looking outside of Verizon at this point even though I'm nervous about that being a "downgrade" in terms of network quality.
The only thing that strikes my fancy at the moment is the Skyrocket on AT&T. Tried one at the store and the phone felt solid. Worried their network will suck just as I remember but an old college friend who is a store manager for them said they've really made some big strides lately.
Still considering the Galaxy Nexus merely because Verizon's network has been so good, and because so many people I know are on Verizon. The phone itself is pretty forgettable and not worth the price, especially since I'd need the extended battery.
The Droid 4 is coming very soon but I absolutely loathe Motoblur. I hope the phone is still metal+glass instead of the Bionic's cheesy plastic. It's the only other phone I'm actually interested in seeing.
So, hivemind, what course do I need to take? Priorities in a phone are build quality, RF performance (call quality and ability to hold onto weak signals), and battery life. AOSP or ease of flashing a non-bloated ROM is the other must-have.

Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A

are u looking for performance or want phone for music and net?

If you like the feel of solid build quality you should check out an HTC. Verizon has the Rezound, but it is not rooted yet. AT&T has some good ones as well, such as the Vivid. HTC usually has a solid dev community as well.

have you looked at the droid 3? Since you liked the Driod it is the logical upgrade.

Dropped my Nexus-S in sink today, is Photon a good buy ?

Doing dishes this morning, and dropped my Nexus-S 4G in the water, I grabbed it lightning quick, was only dipped into the water for like 1/10th of a second. But now Bluetooth doesn't work, and the speaker for media is garbled and low sound. Other than that the phone seems to be working ok, but it's only been an hour.
I had it rooted with Oxygen ROM, and LOVED the screen colors, if the phone does flake out and I need a new device, would you recommend the Photon ? I did have the EVO-3D already for a couple weeks, returned it for the Nexus, I wasn't a fan of Sense, and the screen looked washed out.
I did like my Nexus-S 4G, awesome screen...lightweight...feels comfortable in hand...but the biggest beef is hands down the crap signal issue, WiFi, and 3G inside my house is non existent, overall download speeds blow on the Nexus. I was rooted with Oxygen 2.21 and running the Matr1x kernels. But even at stock 2.3.4 or stock 2.3.5 signal/network blew, and rooted with the ROM was no better, still crap connection to the network.
I will tell you know based on the issues I had with 3 units....and someone else will tell you they have never had an issue and it's a killer phone and I wouldn't doubt them for a second.
Honestly, do some reading, check this forum, the Motorola Photon owners forum and the Sprint community forum and see what you think for yourself.
Went to the local Sprint store, they had two Photon's on display to use. No offense, but that phone is garbage. Both units felt very laggy...the screen was washed out...Motoblur is disgusting...
My rooted Nexus-S 4G felt night and day smoother/faster, and the colors on my screen were a HUGE difference, as in way better quality and deep blacks and bright colors, the Photon looked bad. Vanilla stock Android is one hundred times better than Motoblur.
I am shocked for the Nexus-S being a bit dated tech wise, it is still my favorite phone of all the Sprint phones out today, I had the EVO 4G which was great last year, but is now slower and dated...bought the EVO-3D returned 3 weeks later, it was cool, just not a big fan of Sense, and the screen colors were just ok, picked up the Nexus-S 4G rooted it and installed Oxygen 2.2.1 ROM + Matr1x 6.0 kernel and this phone is a beast And I am sorry, but the Photon is the worst of the four phones I have tried, no offense.
If you loved the Nexus you will love this. Development is a bit hindered due to the locked/unlocked not 4G bootloader but we have a great rom out with a work around for 4G.
The Mo-Pho is as close as you can get to stock android without calling it AOSP

I have to say that I personally just tried the nexus with the one click root and loaded about three roms. The phone seems very outdated and doesn't come with simple things that phones should come with. No led light to show its charging or fully charged. No led for notificiations. Bad Wifi and radio with or without the new update. Less ram and no Sd card slot.
I take no offense to your opinion but my Nexus went back the same day and I was back to the photon. Samsung and google dropped a phone that was outdated before it even hit the market and even though google supports the software. Things like radio issues are controlled by Samsung and we all know how much they support their products (sarcasm). I wouldn't buy a samsung product after my experience. Oh and I left out the back button bug where it gets stuck for 10 seconds when pressing it. All these bugs showed within 24hours. I didn't see anywhere near these amount of bugs on the photon. I only have the silent call bug and that should be a easy fix.

Judging a phone by units up for display in a Corporate store... No offense but THAT is garbage... God knows how many people have messed around with those phones and even messed with it's settings. And you are comparing a ROOTED phone with a highly tweaked out ROM/Kernel to a floor model at a Sprint store? Yup, very scientific apples to apples comparison.

Point taken. Would love to see a Photon that has been tweaked and optimized. But with the Galaxy S2 to be announced next week for Sprint, might as well wait for a solid release date first.
The Photon can't run sense based rom's though, correct?
That's probably my biggest beef with it, but to be honest, I don't know that I even like sense that much or even use any of the features it has that aosp rom's don't have. When I ran Fresh, I used launcher pro, now I've switched to synergy, & while I'm actually using sense 3.0 now I must say that the very first thing I do is remove all those annoying ass battery eating widgets & just wind up with my app's, my clock, my calendar & a music widget.
I'm pretty torn on which one to upgrade to but my wife needs to upgrade from her bb & I'm due for an upgrade so I'm thinking I'll wind up giving her my evo & taking whatever new phone she gets off of her hands for her.
Neither can the GSII.......but roms and such can get ported....your loss
Also, look in the 3d forum, the Nexus s forum, the SGS2 forum, they all have a list of problems a mile long. That's what people post, problems. If your phone is running smooth, you tend not to post as much. Every phone released will have some units with problems. Mine has been almost flawless, but I know some have had problems. At least with Sprint you have 30 days to make up your mind. But really, don't make up your mind on any phone just by how the display model functions.

Ok, I am surprised no one has touched on this, but why are you washing dishes with the phone nearby. That is just inviting disaster.

lmao, I don't mean to laugh but that was too funny.
yeah, there are those that will no matter what is said or shown will not like the Photon, be it the display, the shape, the almost hidden Blur etc etc. But myself coming from HTC phones and Sense, especially with the EVo 4G, I was totally taken back by the Photon. Its a much better phone. True, some have experienced an issue or two, but if one follows the instructions to the T as mentioned throughout the Development section, the issues will be tiny or fixed.
Not for nothing, but the display is one that for me at least can be useful outside in direct sunlight. Its almost Pixel Qi to me.
TS
Here's an "out of the box" short list of Photon vs Everything Else:
Direct sunlight readable screen- Photon
Full HDMI Mirroring- Photon
DLNA- Photon, Epic, 3D, GS2, Nexus?
USB Host- Photon, Nexus?
Full Desktop Browser: Photon
Full Bluetooth Stack- Photon, Nexus, Epic, GS2?
As far as the comment about store demo lagging. Come to my store. My demo runs Hulu via WebTop AND Netflix via phone window at the same time on a 32in TV with not much more than buffering issues.
In short. The Photon is a damn good phone and this is coming from someone that still refuses to ditch the Evo Desktop PC.

Calkulin is around here somewhere to. Wait, what are you doing over here? Somebody told me you went 3D.
I had a nexus s for 3 weeks before getting the photon. Here are my thoughts.
1 photon is much better in sunlight while nexus had more pop out colors
2 photon battery life is much better than the nexus (i get 30 hrs on the photon... no matter you habits you will not get that on a nexus s )
3 blur is almost asop but adds a good dialer and a few other things
4 led light on photon which is not fully working but there at least
5 both are pentile screens bit photon is higher res and brighter
6 i feel more confident holding the photon due to heft, backing, and the rolled over edges.
7 photon feels better on my ear than any other phone, not sure why just no shap edge any where. Nexus felt better on my face though.
8 signal is better on the photon
9 little tweaks make it better like "most likely" in your starred contacts and a picture plus widget
10 i think both have the anti fingerprint/ don't wash out in direct sunlight screen, but the photon add gorilla glass to it
11 2 external mics to cut down on background noise. Nexus s went software vs the original nexus
12 photon will do the dishes for you !!!!
In short yes IMHO the photon is better....WAY better.

I did lol but my friend won a photon in a raffle and he doesnt have Sprint so he sold it to me for 100 bucks. I hate the 3D but this phone is amazing.

Is everybody happy with there Rezound?

I have the nexus but I miss sense. Had the 3d forever liked it but switched to Verizon and liked this phone but, I am so used to all the sense widgets and look. Just debating and looking for feedback on me trading out for rezound... all feedback helps....
These threads should cover it all for you:
Switched from a Nexus to a Rezound
Yet another traded my Nexus for a Rezound post (novel)
Made the Switch
Switching to the Rezound - a few questions...
May switch from nexus...have some questions
I'm about to go the other way. Started on the Rezound... Nexus is probably where I'll end up.
I have compared these two phones rather extensively. We have a VZ corporate account where I work & I am the head of it. We have close to 200 phones on the account & I set up every one of them.
I get my phones free & I can basically have any phone I want at any time. If I wanted a GN, I could have one this afternoon & we have probably 20 of them here on our account.
There is only one thing I like better about the GN(now that the Rezound has been unlocked) & that is the screen size. I like that a LOT, if I could get a phone with a 5" screen I would buy it today. That being said, there is absolutely nothing else I like about the GN compared to the awesome Rezound.
I have owned a TON of phones & the Rezound is by far the best phone I have ever used.
~John
I love my Rezound. When I came from Sprint I bought the Rezound, picked up a GN, and exchanged it after 24 hours for another Rezound.
You can get just about any senselike widget in the market for your gn. I just got rid of my nexus for the resound. It fits in my hand much better. I do miss the large screen, soft keys, aosp roms, and super active forums of the gn though. Other than that, the rezound is just more comfortable in my hand which is the main reason I returned my gn. Oh yeah and the camera sucked on the gn. The rezound has better battery life.
Switched from a Galaxy Nexus 2 weeks ago - still very happy.
I think ICS is a step backward and the GN felt cheap and clumsy to hold. Love the Rezound - just wish it had more game compatibility.
I have both phones. Each has their perks, but the Rezound is my #1.
nexus holds nothing to this phone, IMO. i sell much more of these than nexuses... or nexi. lol

Yes, still very happy with the phone. Wish it had better game support though. Also, for having an HD screen the picture quality on my Netflix is awful. Would have expected it to be the same or better than my ipad or ipod but it's quite a bit worse. The occasional screen glitch when opening or closing apps is slightly annoying but that could just be an issue with my phone and not every one though.
Overall, very satisfied with this phone. There are some features I would love to have but you could probably say the same thing about any phone.

Netflix does not display in HD on the Rezound, that is one place the Nexus is better if you care about that. I use Netflix all the time, but I have an ipad 2 for that so I don't really care.
On the other hand, I am a big time football fan & I absolutely LOVE the VZ NFL app & last I knew that app doesn't work at all in the Nexus.
~John
I was lucky enough to have both phones for several weeks to compare and contrast. I sent the Nexus back to Verizon yesterday in favor of the Rezound. The Nexus has hardware issues that I could not live with. Specifically, the radios, the camera, and overall cheap build quality. Firmware updates and modding will never fix these issues.
I get having the Nexus for true development activities, but in terms of "real-world" functionality, the Rezound is the better device.
well I'm pretty confident I'm gonna switch. I sure appreciate everybody's input.

I just happen to stumble across this in a comparison of the Nexus & the Rezound. These are not my words, this is copied & pasted from a review online:
Advantages of the Rezound over the Nexus:
1) At first a gimmick, I really like the iBeats and software for casual listening as I travel
2) The camera is much better
3) The hardware (CPU, GPU, Screen) are better IMHO
4) I like the feel of the Rezound much better
5) MASS Storage is possible
6) I moved my Class 10 SDMHC 32GB memory card from my old phone to my new (48GB total)
7) The extended battery is about 500 mAh larger
8) My EVO 4G was very well supported by HTC
9) Highest DPI screen in a phone, ever...
Here are my thoughts on the rezound. I will preface this by stating that I was, prior to my journey to verizon, an iphone (since 2007) user, up to and I still have the 4s on AT&T. I have carried a Verizon mi-fi, 4g hotspot, droid charge (solely for hotspot and unlimited data).
I was waiting to pull the trigger on any phone until the gnex arrived. I was underwhelmed with the phone hardware. While I live in SoCal, I am surrounded by hills and Verizon coverage is weak. All signal indications aside, I couldn't hold a call or a data connection with the Gnex. Loved ICS, it was very smooth and felt "polished" to a large extent.
I finally gave up and traded in for the rezound, because I liked the specs. I also picked up a droid razr to play around with. I am having a hard time between the two. I am spoiled by the iphone's display and I think the Rez is every bit as good, if not better on my eyes. It really is like reading printed material. I like that. But, it is think and I seem to see it switching off more to 3g than the razr. I like the feeling of the razr in my hand. It feels like a mini-tablet, but yet still small enough to be a phone. (does that make sense at all). However, I don't think I can live with seeing the pixelation on the display. Just spent the last 1.5 years without it and I don't think I can go back.
The rez is a great phone, but may be too thick for me and I don't particularly care for sense. I am going to desense it and see if that solves some of my issues. I know enough to know that if I don't enjoy using the phone, I will find something else to complain about (in this case, the thickness).
Just my experience so far. These are simply my opinions, and everyone has different hot buttons.
FYI, I don't really play games or use my phone for much more than some specific apps, email, talking (yes people still do that), and browsing. The iphone did that just fine, but was getting a little long in the tooth from a UI standpoint and I just hate the AT&T network drops and dead zones.

Headed to Verizon to exchange. Thanks for the responses.

I'm very happy with mi rezound! I bought the nexus the day it came out after lurking it forever!!!However the phone just didn't do it for me. I'm no developer or anything(never rooted before) so maybe that's why I didn't dig the nexus so much. The battery was horrid, speaker made crazy screeching noises, lost data throughout the day, screen was a bit big/grainy, pictures I took sucked though instant, and also had problems with it rebooting while charging. I miss the sweet notification light, and ICS..thats bout it. I feel like samsung didn't want this phone to be much of a beast like anticipated...look at the comparisons to the galaxy s2.
Funny story with HTC, first time I got a phone it was the motorola droid2...suckked. Being the DINC was out so long, I never even bothered to check it out...though when I returned the droid2 for the DINC I was blown away of how sick HTC is...sorta similar to my second experience when upgrading my phone.
The rezound is great, I like the smaller size and battery life(When I bike, I always put it in my gym short pockets and jam to pandora...this seems nearly impossible to do with the nexus due to its size and short battery life). Quality of pictures are outstanding! The durability of the rezound is also promising. Sense is sweet too though I mainly use goexplorer...The speaker on the rezound is great, goes so loud!(so much better than the DINC2 speaker btw). I was also surprised that the rezound comes with many features that the nexus has(e.g. ability to have no screen lock, panorama picture abilities, slowmo video taking, ability to take screen shots). Basically this phone is an DINC on steroids...or maybe after going through puberty?
Reading these posts makes me glad i got rid of my nexus.
Just installed an HD Netflix app and it works super.

Atrix vs i777

Hello!
I have an opportunity to trade my Atrix in for free for a brand new SGS i777.
Would you suggest I pull the trigger? Or stick with my current bad boy?
Thanks!!
I currently have both Atrix and I777. IMHO there is no clear winner and that is the reason, I keep switching back and forth between these two. Atrix has FingerScanner which I really find useful. I777 has NFC but no support. As I said, for me there is no winner. Others here might disagree and say I777 is better.
Lol, no clear winner? Come on man. I wouldn't wait another second to pull the trigger if I was you. You are basically robbing the poor sucker who is willing to trade with you, unless there is something seriously wrong with the i777.

Actually, my company is a corporate account with Att and we are a pretty large organization (s-oney) ... and, recently I was on an international business trip and my phone was not working well at all. Well, of course Att wants to protect their existing customer base (especially the larger accounts) and offered me a brand new replacement which is the i777 to keep me happy.. they said I don't need to upgrade my account or pay anything... Its just cause I said I will complain to our administration department who is responsible for the corporate accounts if they don't make me smile.. so this is their offer.
so, I think its a functional unit and has nothing wrong with it
Atrix vs i777
i777 has:
-A better screen
-A more powerful CPU and GPU
-Better community support
-Better cameras
-Touchwiz (an improvement to Android
Atrix has:
-Webtop
-Finder reader
-More games without rooting
-Blur (a detriment to Android)
Let's not forget Motorola's stance towards developers is even more awful than Samsung's.
Locked bootloaders for the lose.
I have had both, my Atrix was stolen so I got the SGS2 as a replacement, and I wouldn't even think of going back. It's a superior phone, period.
Okay, thanks for the input guys.. I just placed my order for a full free replacement kit. I also get free overnight shipping because "I always get subpar customer service from att"....
LOL

So, you had a chance to use both, you know how Atrix is like and now have sample (through your work) using i777. Do you like i777 better or Atrix.
When I got mine I was researching between i777 and Atrix. I end up with i777 because it was the best choice for me. As stated in the earlier post Atrix has Blur (I hate Blur), so my choice was clear to get i777.

Guess you beat me to the punch. Glad that you decided to join us.
I was a previous owner of a Motorola Atrix and after switching to this phone I am really happy I did. There is a huge difference between the Atrix and Galaxy S II forum community. There are way to many trolls and rude people on the Atrix board and the development was fairly slow in comparison to how it is over here. As a phone the GSII is quite a bit better as well. I would definitively take the GSII over the Atrix any day.
I have an Atrix. I loved it, screen broke, got a SGSII.
I work next to a Radioshack. They are always giving their employees free AT&T phones. They always come to me to put new ROMS on them.
Did not enjoy blur whatsoever, nor the bootloaders. Could not make that phone anywhere as snappy as SGSII. Not even on the same level if you ask me. Now they have SGSII's next door, and boy are they happy with the stuff I do to their phones.
They still don't know **** about them... Always doing wifi speed tests against iPhones like that is some sort of benchmark. I lol a little everytime I flash a new kernel for them and they say their wifi speeds went up a little.
We have got to have one of the easiest phones to root/rom.
I also have both. I loved the Atrix but after dealing with the Sleep Of Death issue, and not getting cooperation from ATT to replace it since I bought it used. I used my wife's upgrade in December and picked up the SGS2. I dug my Atrix out the other day to flash CM9 on it for kicks and its a HUGE step back as far as display and build of device. Definitely a good choice to switch to the I777.
I'm surprised that this is a discussion. I found the Atrix to be atrocious.
Sgs2 over Atrix.

Just in case future readers care...(since the OP already made his decision)...
Came from 3gs months ago...got i777...thought I had screen burn so exchanged for Atrix 2...had it for less than a week and went back to get another i777. just liked it that much better...couldn't stay away.
Motorola advantages
Clearer small text with qHD display
Slightly louder in call volume
Nice grippy back cover (felt no desire to get a cover for it)
Samsung advantages - all else
More vivid display
Slightly quicker overall
Very much liked TouchWiz UI over others
Like I said, pretty much all else went to i777

I currently have both the i777 and the Atrix 2. If you actually use your phone as a phone and GPS navigation aid, Atrix 2 is hands down the better device. Call quality, data speeds, gps lock and accuracy, overall excellent build quality, as well as a better screen (I know you AMOLED fanboys hate that one) make the Atrix 2 the winner. Yes, the A2 locked bootloader is a drawback but...
I use the Atrix 2.
I play with the i777.
I returned the Galaxy Nexus.

I actually had the unbearable misfortune of being stuck on my dad's Atrix for a few days last week. The difference was ridiculous. Compared to the i777 the Atrix is laggy, tiny, buggy (stock Atrix, UnNamed i777), and overall worse.
Make the trade before they take the offer away.

Had the Atrix and the i777 and honestly the only thing that impressed me about the i777 was the screen.
As far as the Atrix goes, I didn't give two ****s for a finger print sensor or the useless laptop dock. Good idea but poor execution. Blur is absolute garbage and I got rid of that **** the day I bought the phone.
GS2i777 no complaints except the battery doesn't last as long. Atrix battery is slightly superior. Touchwiz although highly improved and refined versus Blur, I got rid of it too and used CM7 with ADW Ex on both phones and they both kicked major ass. Battery life on both phones was exceptional.
Performance wise, I don't know what you guys are doing with your phones like trying to power a goddamn nuclear fusion reactor or something but after highly modifying them to no end, I find them equal as far as performance goes. I don't care for any high intensity graphic and visually stunning games. I use both phones for work, email, occasional words with friends, a ton of assorted games and apps and mainly checking the web, sports, news, stocks, facebook every now and again.
I'm not talking about silly pointless benchmarks, I'm talking about real world performance, GPS was equal for both. The only reason I bought the i777 was for the screen. When I let someone mess around with my phone, every single one of them had the "awwww damn this screen is amazing" look on their faces.
I'm not starting a war with anyone, they're both badass phones. Everyone has their own opinions obviously so if you don't agree with mine then please flush it down the toilet.
Sold my i777 for the i9100 now my phone rapes all. :-D

Need opinions...

I have been a die-hard Moto fan since the original Droid, they make great devices and I've never had any issues with the ones I've owned, which include the Droid, DX, DX2 and Bionic. I also owned the Dinc (great phone), Charge (only thing great about the phone was the screen, but other than that it was total garbage), Tbolt (for a short while, then gave it to the girlfriend) and now the Rezound.
I'll be honest, I do love the Rezound. It's S-off'ed, rooted, ROM'ed, everything. It's fast and has a wonderful screen. I was surprised at the call quality as well, my biggest grip with both previous HTC phones was the call quality. I currently have a Sense 4.0 ROM from Newt and it flies. However, the phone does have issues of it's own.
The screen is not durable at all, I actually had to go and buy a quality screen protector after I managed to scratch the screen the first day, never had any issues with GG-equipped devices.
The build quality isn't exactly great compared to even the Tbolt, that thing was rock solid, so was the Droid and DX.
The red capacitive buttons are nice, but I've had to take the phone apart and recolor the LED bulbs red because the buttons turned pink (common issue), and it's hard to run a nice theme other than red because the colors conflict easily.
The recessed buttons on the top and sides are difficult to press at times, which can be frustrating especially with a case on the phone.
Bluetooth is almost non-functioning in ICS. It ran fine on GB with my Mitsubishi Lancer's stock audio system over bluetooth, but ever since ICS it doesn't work at all. I've tried the Tbolt, Droid and a friend's Razr, they all work perfectly. The Rezound, not so much. And after how well the phone runs on ICS, I can't go back to GB and be content with it.
Now, the Bluetooth is kind of important because I am in the process of being hired for a law enforcement agency in the DC area, and it requires me to drive into DC everyday and it's a hands-free zone. I'd like to be able to stream my music library and calls in my car, but currently I can't and that's a problem. Also, with this possible job opportunity comes the need for durable equipment, and I'm sorry to say the Rezound does not feel like it would hold up to a drop on the hard ground even with a good case on it. I also need something that has excellent call quality, excellent radios and very reliable. Out of the three possibilities that Verizon currently offers, the Razr seems like it would be perfect. After owning a Samsung and being unhappy with it, as well as seeing the horror from the Gnex, I won't even consider the GS3. My girlfriend even had the Fascinate and she hated it as well.
It's hard to consider getting a different device that isn't as dev-friendly, and doesn't have as nice of a display (that 720p has grown on me a lot). Granted, I played with both the Razr and Rezound at several stores and the experiences were pretty much the same at each store. They're both great phones in the end, but despite the locked internals, I've always had good luck with my Motorola devices. The screen isn't all THAT bad on the Razr, it beats the crap out of the nasty screens they put on the Bionic and X2.
I guess I'm just conflicted with a decision to either keep the Rezound, or go for a Razr Maxx. I know more phones are coming soon, but I need to get something that will last me a while. The modding of kernels, radios, OS's and whatnot is fun, but time consuming and free time is something that I won't have much of anymore. As long as I can theme the Razr, make it faster and be sure it has excellent wireless connections, I'll be happy.
Sorry for the long post...
The MAXX is a great phone. With the official ICS having been released last week, it's just gotten better. In the end it's entirely personal preference though. The screen is perfectly fine and clear for all practical purposes. Under minimum brightness settings there may be dark blotches visible in black areas of your screen, but this is extremely common and due to the screen type. It doesn't indicate any problems with the device nor will it be visible under screen brightnessess above like 15%. Personally I say go for it :good:
I have first hand experience on this topic, so I will dive in.
I too owned a Rezound and was reasonably happy with it. But ever since I got the Rezound (about 6 months ago), I could never understand or get over how sluggish the phone felt to me. With or without being rooted, GB was extremely choppy on homescreen scrolling. Way too much lag for the specs of the phone. So it was obviously a Sense thing.
I of course rooted it right away. And I can tell you that I tried every single ROM available for that phone and none of them ran the phone like I felt it should. That was GB, ICS and 4.0 ROM's. The Ultrasmooth tweak smoothed out the homescreen lag, but the overall phone felt sluggish too. Just in opening apps and all of that.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the phone was super slow or anything. But just slower than what it should be with the specs.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago and I sold my Rezound and picked up a Maxx locally off someone. I'm not looking back. This phone is great! Battery life is all it's cracked up to be and everything just runs smoother. Everything is snappier compared to the Rezound.
In the end, I would highly recommend making the switch. Just my opinion.
Feel free to ask me any questions.

Awesome, I was hoping a former Rezound owner would chime in.
You know, I completely understand what you're saying about the sluggishness. While the phone isn't slow by any means, it does indeed have some "twitching" at times, and I want to say it has something to do with either the 720p resolution, the graphics chip, or both. Perhaps it's the fact that Sense is embedded into the OS and there's no way to run AOSP/AOKP as of right now, and we all know that Sense is a resource hog. There's no way the 1.5ghz dual core processor is slow, it's quick to open apps and whatnot, but your right it's definitely a little sluggish at times. And I understand no phone is perfect. Even the iTurd gets hung up as well. I even loaded Go Launcher up on the two test phones I mentioned in my first post, and the Razr just seemed to rock right through it with hardly any lag or sluggishness, whereas I can see it on the Rezound.

Yeah, you're right. It's not that the Rezound was a slow phone, but it felt like it which always irritated me. Sense is probably most of the culprit.
Just FYI, if you get a Razr or Maxx. Try Launcher Pro. This phone absolutely flies with that launcher!

I will take that into consideration should I choose to buy one.
Good news is my girlfriend was eligible for an upgrade yesterday, right before this whole "share everything" went live, so she was able to preserve her unlimited data. Me, not so lucky anymore for discounted upgrades. Anyway, she decided to get a 16gb Razr in blue, so once it arrives I will be testing the crap out of it to see how well it does, especially bluetooth. If everything goes well, then I will fork out the money for one and sell the Rezound.

Just FYI about bluetooth and the Razr/Maxx.....I just recently got a brand new Ford Focus with Sync and MyFord Touch and the Maxx works beautifully on bluetooth with the system. So I think you will be good on the bluetooth front.
But please note that I am still on Gingerbread. Things can change on ICS, but I highly doubt it.
Check the sig.
The Razr is the better phone of the two. If the bootloader was unlocked I would say the Maxx is w/out a doubt the best phone to date....overall.
You guys are making my wallet run and hide, lol. But I do appreciate the input. Hopefully the gf's Razr arrives tomorrow so I can play around with it.

I too have used both phones. I can tell you that the RAZR MAXX wins hands down. IMHO. I bought the MAXX on it's release day and bought a Rezound off CL. I just switched my SIM card (had to use an adapter) between the two. Didn't care for the way the Rezound was built. From the recessed buttons, raised screen frame, poor battery life, and Sense. The only thing I did like was the unlock ring, that would allow you to camera/text/phone/unlock. I really like that Moto kinda copied this with the new unlock key on ICS. Don't know if you buy from CL, or pay full retail, but you will be happy with the RAZR MAXX.

Yep the Razr should work excellently on bluetooth as it has BT 4.0 capability. Awesome phones...
Bought my girlfriend a Maxx several months ago, she loves it. It works well with Bluetooth in my Mazda 3. She is a medical student, spend all day in a hospital, and if you work in a hospital (i do too) you'll know that your phone is constantly reaching for a signal through thick walls all day. She comes home with 70% battery after 12-16 hour shifts. She has a Charge previously, horrid horrid phone, i rooted it, but that thing was beyond help. With her Maxx, she doesn't even want me to root it or change it bc she loves it so much. No ICS yet, but I'm sure it will just be a better experience for her. Personally, i wouldn't take anything over my Galaxy Nexus, especially now that I'm running Jellybean, and i recommend the Nexus, pure Google is the way to go, this is my first Nexus device, and i will always have one now. If i could keep the slim profile of my phone and get the 3300 mah battery, it would be perfect, battery life my only complaint. Point of my ramblings i guess, personally, i recommend the Galaxy Nexus, but the Maxx is a hell of a phone, solid build, comparable specs, astonishing battery life. It's all personal choice, but if i was in the market for a phone right now, the Maxx would be my number 2 pick, hand down.

If i'm going to buy a phone that I want to take care of, I buy it brand new. I've had too many CL and ebay phones, never again. But I agree with you on some of the points about the Rezound.

Well I don't want the GN simply because my experience with Samsung phones has been horrible, both the Charge and my gf's Fascinate. Plus, I really didn't like the call quality from any of the GN's I tested, and the fact that I can't use my 64gb SDcard is a huge no-no. I'm also looking for something great on battery life, which is why I'm considering the Maxx. But thank you though!
No problem, like i said, not dogging the Maxx at all, if there was no nexus, i would have the Maxx with out question. Good luck, with ICS, it will be a great phone.

Well, the girlfriend's Razr showed up yesterday, did some testing on GB and then installed ICS. Man, I didn't think this phone would be this great. The bluetooth was great on GB, connected up to my car with no problems, and it actually got better with ICS.
I think I'm sold on a Maxx now.
After dealing with the incompetent jackasses at the Verizon store at Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax, VA, I decided just to call customer service and buy one. Should be here Monday or Tuesday.

I REALLY like my local Verizon store. It's this rare gem on a beach of fools gold. I've bought all my phones there for over 10 years. But, they simply couldn't help me with a new phone this time. I was nearing the upgrade date, but was going to be out of town when it hit and I wanted a new phone before I left. No dice. Then, Verizon had a sale on all 4G LTE smart phones on their website. $100 off. This was actually better than waiting for my upgrade discount. I went to the store, said I'd rather buy from them than online and asked if they could match it- they said no way. So, I bought it online, get it 2 days later, activated it myself with no drama and was good to go.

Apologies for typical "should I buy" thread

Sorry I know if everyone asked these general questions about what to buy the forums would be flooded. Hopefully posting in the general section I'm not getting in the way of any important development threads or anything. I wouldn't ask if I weren't really struggling with some indecision here.
I'm a Verizon customer, still have unlimited. Using a Droid Bionic with Carbon Rom. I'm planning to buy at full retail price to leave my data plan in tact.
LG wasn't really even on my radar. HTC One was originally what caught my eye for the styling and great reviews, then the new wave of Droids came out, and now the G2. I think I'm fairly decided in terms of currently available devices and don't need help there, I would get the G2 if it came down to what's on store shelves right now. I've seen comments on the HTC One camera ranging from amazing to garbage, and not sure I would like Blinkfeed. The One speakers would be nice but can't say I really need internal audio from my phone that much. Doesn't sound like the Droid Maxx battery is really thrilling anyone, plus with upgrading at full retail price it kinda isn't all that interesting to jump from one Moto Droid to another, it'll just feel like a differently shaped Bionic. Moto X seems interesting everyone keeps saying it's the best all around form factor and the most refined that an Android device has ever felt, but I think I'm ready for a bigger screen and battery.
I'm more a bit hesitant that I'll get the G2 and then the Nexus 5 or Note 3 is going to be amazing. Although I'm well aware of the crop of Nexus 5 rumors, apparently not having Verizon's LTE band (then counteracted by a newer rumor saying there may have been an FCC filing for a separate Verizon LG device that wasn't the G2 and could be their variant of the Nexus 5). Plus a rumored smaller battery for the Nexus compared to the G2 which would lower my interest in it. Note 3... I'm not really dying to own my first Samsung but it seems it might outdo the G2 in a few ways, more Ram, SD card slot, etc. Obviously anything compared to the Bionic I have will seem nice, 32GB (or the 20-whatever that's actually available after system install) on the G2 will be plenty, I am used to working with the 16gb I have on my Bionic and am used to having to send stuff to my PC harddrive if my phone gets too full.
I've owned LG in my cell phone history, had an LG Dare and then an Ally for my first Android phone. Their hardware is alright but if I recall correctly they are pretty iffy about timely updates and then just stop supporting devices once they hit a certain age. But then Motorola pulled the same stunt during my Bionic ownership and most of you will know about how long it took Bionic to get system updates. I don't think I ever really saw myself going back to LG as I've felt the same indifference towards them as the rest of the community for a while now, although it kinda says something about them that they're still good enough to keep getting contracted for the Nexus devices. And then this G2 landed on my radar out of nowhere.
G2 camera sounds great with a few reviews sprinkled in that suddenly didn't think it was all that amazing, but I take pictures like crazy, camera is important, I think I may even sell my Sony Nex 3 full size camera as a way to help pay for a phone upgrade, the big camera just sits here and collects dust when I can have a camera in my pocket all day in a phone.
Important aspects to me, battery life (sick of charging my Bionic constantly, I think my extended battery is wearing out because I can just watch the percentage drop like a rock as I use it), quality display would be nice after settling for the Bionic with it's blah pentile screen, camera as I mentioned above, other than that I browse, text message, need Tethering, and use Pandora in my car. And I do care about developer support, I like messing with Roms, but if the factory Rom is decent once you get it set up, I can live with not having as large of a dev community as S4 might have or whatever. So yeah with that said it seems like a no brainer saying display-battery-camera, G2 sounds to be the best at all of that right now, I'm just worried about what else is coming out this holiday season. I know the Nexus announcement is rumored for next month but I just hate to wait just to find out it's not coming to Verizon or is definitely going to have some lame 2300mah battery. You know how it is when you're ready to upgrade...
-I suppose we'd all be guessing, but how good are people feeling about the G2 getting a KitKat update in a reasonable time window? This is the LG flagship so I would hope for good support, but the LG skin and addons are so overwhelming and heavily skinned devices always take longer to get their updates out. I'd be thrilled to get this phone but that would quickly turn to disappointment if we're waiting for 4.4 longer than anyone else.
-How is developer support looking? Have any big names pledged to add the G2 to their supported devices? I really like Carbon Rom on Bionic. I suppose it's a good sign that root and loki happened right away but so far Rom releases, especially for VZW, looks slow.
-Speaking of ROMs, do we have any idea if any of the stock stuff like knock-on etc will ever be able to be pulled and applied to a custom ROM, or is it pretty much a guarantee that if you switch to anything but stock you're going to be sacrificing a lot of the factory features?
-I noticed the G2 doesn't even come up on the Top Devices window at the first XDA forum portal, is that a bad sign for community interest in the device? HTC One, Note 3, etc all show up as the top devices on XDA right now. Is there a community behind this device or not really? Does everyone dig the specs but shy away from LG with their heavy skin?
-It WiFi tethering working with the current root exploit? I use my Bionic as my home internet access, on the stock ROM it seems like FoxFi will stop working after a couple of days like it's detecting that I'm tethering, on Carbon ROM I can tether for gig after gig of data and no issue.
-I've seen more than one person gripe about thermal throttling and the G2 starting to run like utter garbage in certain conditions. That would certainly suck to spend 600 on. Is this widespread?
I don't think I'd regret buying it immediately but I see the potential that only a few weeks into ownership the "oh crap why did I go with LG" feeling will start.
For the awesome specs...yes. Its a great deal for what you get. I don't know if tethering is working yet but I do know pda net works. Top be honest with my wife and I we were concerned about going share everything but I got a music unlimited service for 50 a year and downloaded everything instead of streaming. We went from using 6+ gb a month to under 2. And almost all the music is ultra high quality which works perfect with the 24 bit DAC. I stopped using Pandora because of this...I can skip all I want no commercials and choose weekday I want. I am very happy with the lg UI MINUS the giant size. So fast there had been a fantastic dev community modding the stock rom. Coming from a GNex I am ecstatic to get TWRP already. I wouldn't be too sure that anything coming out from Samsung will be crackle since the S4 is locked down now. Battery is about 9-10 hours of straight screen and 24+ with normal usage including hours on and off of heavy use. The only thing I don't like is the weak out of the box speaker but they have already modded ATT gain to make it better. The Btooth audio and head phone quality makes for this Times a million. I don't see anything else coming close unless you are Andre the Giant and like the phablet Note type. The one is bigger with a smaller washed out color LCD. The speakers rock but it's not worth the lack of general power. Grey a quick window case it's s fantastic.

Wow. There's about 5 minutes I can't get back.
Nexus5 will most likely never hit Verizon.
Big name devs? This phone is like a week old. Time will tell.
Wi-Fi tethering not currently working.
Buy it. If you don't like it inside of 14 days, return it. By that time, news of the nexus 5 should be out.
Thank you Devs. From my LG G2.
Wifi tether wasn't working on the S4 or One, I just had both phones on Sprint and T-Mobile with various roms and kernels. The only other phone I considered was the Note 3 but I can't stand the home button, would have liked the extra real estate but the G2 is still manageable for me to use one handed and a stylus would have been wasted on me.
This phone doesn't even need roms tbh.
I'd buy this phone all over again. No other phone feels like this one a atm.
LG G2
I was following every phone to come down the pipe for the last six months or more. I had an LG Nitro HD for my last phone and my first was the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. The nitro was terrible. The only time that phone ran right was on stock gingerbread. The development was fairly slow and the community small because it was att only and wasn't popular at that. I was about as put off by LG as they come.
Two days ago, I bought the G2, and I absolutely love it. The battery life really is phenomenal. I say this because it had kept up with my initial high usage love for a new phone. I plugged in last night with 34% left after having almost six hours of screen on time at 80% brightness. The note 3 might be great, but then again it might not. Only 100mah larger battery with a .5in larger screen concerns me a bit. The processor is already insane in the G2 so that will likely not make a difference for a bit. The ram shouldn't be an issue for at least an upgrade cycle at minimum.
Honestly, the biggest difference between this and the nexus is battery and screen. Nexus is 5 in and only had 2300mah so unless Kit Kat has major battery improvements that phone was no longer a option for me. The tipping point for this phone over the moto x in my case? Development and community. This phone already has a larger forum Than the moto x. That's not the only determinant but helps significantly. Go check the nitro forum, this phone is already almost as large... this phone had root on day one I think it was and boot loader bypass within a week of launch. And a Rom 2days later. It may not be as fast some devices but that is still damn fast. Will this be a great dev phone? Too early to tell but it looks promising. And with the nexus being nearly identical hardware wise, that could help too.
Hope that helps.
