Can the Fascinate be rooted by loading a single executable file in the phone that roots the phone? Sorry if this is an old question, I appreciate all the hard work developers put into, hacks, roms, kernels, etc. Not easy for me to follow.
I know all these dozens of choices are very simple to sift thru for some; but not me, I find it very confusing and difficult to choose, so I ask. Thank you for your time.

I did mine the easy way. For Gingerbread 2.3.5:
Download the SU.zip below...
1. ODIN cwm recovery
2. Boot into recovery and flash SU.zip
3. Reboot
Rooted!
If you want to run a custom Kernel... check out KGB Kernal, you'll like it.

I ordered a Samsung Galaxy S II and have been crawling the forum trying to learn all I can before I try rooting and unlocking my phone when I get it. But I'm having trouble deciding on a few things.
Hopefully my question can become a guide for other new people who are just starting off like me.

To begin, I'm trying to figure out what's best for rooting.

All of these have their own merits. But I'm trying to figure out the best approach for myself.
Although Lightn'ing (LitePro's) looks interesting and I may try that ROM later, for now I want to avoid changing the ROM till I know I like the phone. So I'm looking at the first three choices.
The one that I think I would be able to do easiest is either lyriquidperfection's or CLShortFuse's methods as they both are one-click solutions and I just need to grab the right kernels.
I don't know if there's any reason I would want to go with Chainfire's instead of the two previously mentioned. If there is please let me know.
I asked this question on the respective threads but as of posting haven't gotten an answer of if there's any reason to flash the original kernel back after rooting and if I keep root if I flash it back.
I also don't know much about the use of Jigs to avoid the flash counter going up. Is there any reason I need to worry about the flash counter going up? Is there a limit on number of flashes on a phone?

This seems pretty much straight-forward. I just got to root the phone then get and run the app mentioned. Phone will crash/reboot and then no SIM lock.
If there's anything that seems wrong with this let me know please.
Other stuff:
At some stage here I want to be able to back up the stuff on the phone and get other typical tools.
I keep hearing about ClockWorkMod constantly and it seems to be a tool for backing up the phone data and making it easier to flash stuff in without use of ODIN.
I haven't found clear documentation on how I would do this on the SGII specifically.
I also here Titanium backup (sp?) is also a good idea to install at some point.
Is there other apps or otherwise I should be looking into before I start this journey into the wonderful world of hacked smartphones?

Zero as Samsung will invalidate warranty for custom roms or rooted phones .

Their is no documentation its probably written up in the FAQ or Wip but is a relativity simple tool anyway .Backup restore phones rom install custom rom wipe data factory reset reset battery stats to zero .

I would advice you to go with Chainfire's method. It's the easiest and most versatile method IMO. Definitely the best for beginners because you keep your stock ROM yet still are rooted and get Clockwork Mod.
The installed CWM (Clockwork Mod) Manager app with Chainfire's work is an easy way to see what it does - basically you can backup and restore your whole system/device, plus flash custom ROM/kernels/themes etc. Look into the flashing part later - baby steps are good here!
Titanium Backup is an excellent backup app for backing up/restoring apps and data, as opposed to the whole system. Buy the Pro version, definitely worth it.
I also like My Backup (also on Market), excellent for backing up contacts/SMS/MMS. The free version is a 30 day trial.
Can't help with unlocking, never needed to - sure others can help.

Most just put custom rom on sd card and flash via CWM .

I would also advice using CF-Root. I was scared of rooting my phone, but after using CF-Root, I don’t know why I was so scared. The process took a little over 30 seconds (I need practice). To me at lease I think it’s the easiest method, you just need to make sure to download the right kernel.
EDIT:
Get a UBS jig, After rooting, I had the "yellow triangle" I turned off phone, removed battery, inserted jig, put back battery, entered download mode, restarted phone and no more "yellow triangle"
Hi, I just got a hand me down samsung fascinate to replace my barely functioning OG Droid. I rooted it and installed rom manager and it kept failing the custom rom installation or any installation of anything from recovery manager. It kept saying the signature verification failed if I remember the error code correctly. That was with the 3e recovery software. I read a few posts that said the older 2e version would work better with rom manager.
So I used odin and reverted to an older software revision, 2.1-update1. That successfully shows 2e as the recovery manager version. But now the market doesn't show rom manager(free) as an install option, premium shows up though. If I use the web browser to look at the market and look for it it shows up but it shows four devices, my old droid, a nook I rooted and converted for a friend, and then two devices that just show a question mark and doesn't allow them to be selected for installation. I thought thats ok I'll just download it from clockwork mods website and install it manually. I downloaded it but astro opens it and shows no info, details tab says it cannot open RomManager.apk as APK file. If I open it with file manager it says it cannot parse package. I tried downloading it on my computer and transferring it to my phone and it still says the same thing.
So I'm really confused as to what is going on. I do have install non market stuff checked.
I was hoping someone could give me some advice. I want to install miui as that was what I ran on my droid and liked it. Want to see how it runs on a faster phone.

When you were on Froyo, did you install the modified 3e Recovery needed for CWM to stick? I'm sure this is your problem if you didnt take this step.

Rom manager is pointless unless you run cm7 nightlies. Get the recovery fixed for cm7 (first post of jt's cm7 thread in development) put miui rom on sd. Pull batt, flash fixed cm7 recovery in odin, insert battery (don't boot), 3 finger to recovery and flash miui. Profit.

My question now is I'm currently at 2e recovery, on the older firmware. Can I still follow those directions and put the modified 3e recovery onto the phone how it is. Or does the modified file count on other files being in place that I don't have since I'm downgraded? Do I need to update it again? I hate to ask but I just want to make sure.

Glad we got it figured out.
Just for future reference, It is customary of this forum that if someone were to find a post helpful, go ahead and hit the thanks button on their post. Some guys take this very seriously.
I guess I need to brush up on my phone modding skills because I haven't had to root/unlock/modify a phone for a while now as you can see I'm on a D2 and had an INC1 before that, I've messed with a NC and a Touchpad on the tablet side, all of these procedures seem simple and straight forward with few steps or lots of simple steps.
With my Rezound coming on Friday, I realize I'm a bit out of touch on things, when I hear about renaming files to x or y, using fastboot, boot.img, or flashing recoveries separately (including using Amon Ra, which I've never used) I'm quite confused.
I would appreciate if someone could lay it out for me a little more simplier for me or am I just overthinking?

Yeah, I can see how reading posts in here at this time could be confusing. A lot of issues lately are due to people having flashed an ICS leak that caused their mainver to update, making it so that they could not simply flash back to GB. But now there are ICS ROMs out that you don't have to worry about that happening with, but if you are going to go for one of those I would confirm that in the thread of the ROM you pick.
Also, it's possible you may have to flash an ICS kernel before flashing an ICS ROM. I haven't gone to ICS yet but have read that when you go back to GB from ICS you have to flash a GB kernel first, so I would just check on that and make sure first if you're going with ICS.
And due to not having s-off I guess things are a bit different than if you do have it but it's not as bad as it seems.
So basically you are going to:
- unlock the phone by obtaining an unlock code from HTCDev [adb]
- flash Amon Ra, a recovery being used instead of CWM since that one's been buggy on the Rezound [adb - put recovry img file in same folder you used for unlocking]
- root [you will download a self contained toolset in its own folder and use that]
- flash ROM [put the zip file on your external sd card and flash in recovery]
- flash kernel [put the zip file on your external sd card and flash in recovery]
Here is a thread that will take you through the steps,

AND this guide skips flashing a ROM and also says it's for ziggy's kernel, so once you get past flashing Recovery go to the thread of the ROM you've selected and follow their instructions, then same thing with whatever kernel you've chosen.

If you do a little searching, there are a few great adb tutorials on this website. Try the DInc 2 threads.

- Don't worry about rooting if you're going to flash a ROM or at least not before you flash a new ROM. If for some reason your new ROM isn't rooted, you can root it later.
- "adb reboot bootloader" is your friend. Saves you from having to pull the case off for the battery a million times.
I came from an OG droid so all this fastboot stuff was new for me too, but I got the hang of it pretty quick. It really just adds one more layer between the recovery.

Yes I would say 99% of custom ROMs are already rooted.

That's the first I've heard of that here in the Rezound forums. Not saying it's not true, just never read that here.
In any case, I would root first so you can make nandroid of your stock rooted phone in case the ROM flashing doesn't go smoothly. Then you can always go back to rooted stock easily and start over. I have mine saved for any future needs as well.
As to using adb. MrSmith317 (I think I got his numbers right) put up a nice little mini sdk which has the files you need for using adb for the purposes you will need to use it. I've attached it below since I can't find his original post that had it attached. Unzip that, rename the folder to something easy and put it in the root of your C: directory for easy navigation from the command prompt. You will use that to unlock and flash recovery.
Oh, another thing... there is an updated version of Amon Ra buried in the thread that never got put in the first post, so don't use versions listed in that first post. The latest version is now 3.13 found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21730681&postcount=235 . I'll update my other post to mention this.
And one last thing, it's possible you may have to flash an ICS kernel before flashing an ICS ROM. I always do my backups from recovery where you don't need root (at least I didn't with the Rezound, been too long since my droid was unrooted). 99% is completely made up, but are there actually custom ROMs out there without root...? Not leaks or backups, but actual custom ROMs people have built.
Hi, sorry for the new thread, but I've been searching for this info over the past week or so and haven't been able to find a Q&A for The-Unofficial rom nor an answer to my question (and can't post in the dev forum). Just wanted to clarify the steps I'll be taking to get everything done from unrooted to The-Unofficial flashed.
This is probably a stupid question but, should I flash the kernel that comes with the rom first? (Da_g's overclocked is included) I don't have to root with a different kernel and then flash the whole zip (kernel included)?
After the root, I need to use Clockwork Recovery and then flash the rest of the zip from there?
This is my first attempt at trying it, so I just wanted to make sure I'm not going to seriously screw it up. Thanks.

Looking forward to the ROM, I've heard great things.
So I've spent a few hours looking around for how I can upgrade my Transformer Prime to JellyBean and I'm beyond frustrated.
It seems there are so many different guides, and almost all of them for older versions of the prime (< .28). I read through all the rooting guides on the "rolled-up sticky guides" page
It's almost as if you come late to the rooting scene with your device you're out of luck.
Then I decided the best method to approach this is skip rooting my device and simply unlock my bootloader, then use fastboot to load CWM onto my device.
Only problem is I'm reading tons of sketchy looking sites with broken image links on how to do this, and the user comment complaints on those sites don't really raise my confidence.
I found this link:

I was confusing ROM Manager with Clockwork Recovery (in my head they are the same). So the guide is correct, I do need root for ROM Manager, but not for Clockwork Recovery.
So the steps I needed to take were:
1) Unlock the bootloader using the official Asus bootloader unlocker
2) Follow this guide: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Asus_Transformer_Prime:_Full_Update_Guide, but use the Clockwork Recovery way instead of the ROM Manager way.
3) Enjoy Jelly Bean
ÄIf you want to flash cwm instead of twrp then just head to cwm home site. If you want to flash twrp then head to the twrp thread. Also fastboot shouldn't be too hard to find. Then just follow any guide to flash recovery.
