Hi, sorry for the new thread, but I've been searching for this info over the past week or so and haven't been able to find a Q&A for The-Unofficial rom nor an answer to my question (and can't post in the dev forum). Just wanted to clarify the steps I'll be taking to get everything done from unrooted to The-Unofficial flashed.
This is probably a stupid question but, should I flash the kernel that comes with the rom first? (Da_g's overclocked is included) I don't have to root with a different kernel and then flash the whole zip (kernel included)?
After the root, I need to use Clockwork Recovery and then flash the rest of the zip from there?
This is my first attempt at trying it, so I just wanted to make sure I'm not going to seriously screw it up. Thanks.
Root to run a backup and get clockwork recovery, then flash the ROM zip.
Thanks for the quick response!
Would it make the process easier if I root with the included kernel? Or doesn't it matter?
Doesn't matter. Root is root. As long as you get clockwork you're good.
Okay, thanks so much for the help
Looking forward to the ROM, I've heard great things.

Hi, I just got a hand me down samsung fascinate to replace my barely functioning OG Droid. I rooted it and installed rom manager and it kept failing the custom rom installation or any installation of anything from recovery manager. It kept saying the signature verification failed if I remember the error code correctly. That was with the 3e recovery software. I read a few posts that said the older 2e version would work better with rom manager.
So I used odin and reverted to an older software revision, 2.1-update1. That successfully shows 2e as the recovery manager version. But now the market doesn't show rom manager(free) as an install option, premium shows up though. If I use the web browser to look at the market and look for it it shows up but it shows four devices, my old droid, a nook I rooted and converted for a friend, and then two devices that just show a question mark and doesn't allow them to be selected for installation. I thought thats ok I'll just download it from clockwork mods website and install it manually. I downloaded it but astro opens it and shows no info, details tab says it cannot open RomManager.apk as APK file. If I open it with file manager it says it cannot parse package. I tried downloading it on my computer and transferring it to my phone and it still says the same thing.
So I'm really confused as to what is going on. I do have install non market stuff checked.
I was hoping someone could give me some advice. I want to install miui as that was what I ran on my droid and liked it. Want to see how it runs on a faster phone.
Thanks in advance hopefully I provided enough information and didn't miss something simple.
When you were on Froyo, did you install the modified 3e Recovery needed for CWM to stick? I'm sure this is your problem if you didnt take this step.
Here is a link to the thread with everything you will need. If you have additional problems, dont hesitate to ask!
Hope this helps!
BTW: 1. Dont worry about this being for the infuse. It will work fine & 2. These types of threads should go in the Q&A section, for future reference
Rom manager is pointless unless you run cm7 nightlies. Get the recovery fixed for cm7 (first post of jt's cm7 thread in development) put miui rom on sd. Pull batt, flash fixed cm7 recovery in odin, insert battery (don't boot), 3 finger to recovery and flash miui. Profit.
good day.
First thank you for the replies very appreciated.
Tone_Capone I was going to try your method first. You are correct when I was on the updated firmware I did not flash the "fixed" 3e recovery did not realize there was one. My question now is I'm currently at 2e recovery, on the older firmware. Can I still follow those directions and put the modified 3e recovery onto the phone how it is. Or does the modified file count on other files being in place that I don't have since I'm downgraded? Do I need to update it again? I hate to ask but I just want to make sure.
chopper the dog Sorry about wrong section, thought q and a would be for commonly asked questions and the answers for them. I was gonna try this method then but I'm not sure if I choose bootloader in odin or pda like I did when downgrading the firmware.

refer to section 3...just replace ics rom with miui... although honestly I would go with ics 4.0

thanks everyone, droidstyle I followed your links directions and miui is up and running. Very appreciated. I considered ics but I'll wait a while.

Glad we got it figured out.
Just for future reference, It is customary of this forum that if someone were to find a post helpful, go ahead and hit the thanks button on their post. Some guys take this very seriously.
Hey guys.
Getting my GSII in a few days and my first task is too root & flash a new rom.
As the bootloader is unlocked on this, can I just flash CWM onto it, make a nandroid backup and install a new rom. In this case Hyperdroid. Will this work fine and then I can use superoneclick to root it.
I am coming from a Wildfire S so I am assuming there is a different way to do all this. Just want to see if I have the main concept correct
Best way is to read all the How to Threads!
IMHO the easiest way is to flash a CWM Kernel then nandroid then flash your ROM of choice.
Try these two threads to get you started.

Thanks for the help, I have knowledge in flashing etc, but coming from an entirely different phone I thought I would be safe and ask making sure I had the same idea of doing it.
Hey Everyone,
So, I'm pretty sure I'm going to unlock the bootloader on my Prime, but I had a quick question before I do, and I'm not seeing any sort of threads which help me out that much (Or at least the ones I looked at).
To make the story short, I'm looking to be able to root my tablet and install a custom ROM on there, however, it is to my understanding that there is no way to root the .21 firmware at this time. However, I was wondering if by unlocking the bootloader I would be able to manually push CWM Touch and thusly be able to boot into recovery, installing a rom that is pre-rooted, or even just rolling back to a previous update. I'm fairly familiar with ADB and terminal commands, so I am not shy to get into the nitty gritty if need be.
I apologize in advance if this has already been answered or asked, but, I'm in a time crunch and was looking for some advice !
Thanks for the information,
Horvaticus

um...sorry....it might come across as harsh but you didnt look did you? If your familiar with ADB then you should know that rooting has nothing to do with custom roms. In order to put a custom rom you have to have an unlocked bootloader.
Review the Android development Section for info on roms/bootloaders/rooting
An unlocked bootloader was released and we had a rom available within 2 hours.
If you go to ANY thread with [ROM] they will tell you what you need to do. Easy.
And .21 is cooked into many Roms so far...i'm using virtous Prime and prefer that one so far...(it's really about preference)
So...moral of the story..please read before posting...do a quick search...it's been answered before.

Well, I know that rooting has nothing to do with Rom installment. Admittedly I was posting from a golf course and didn't take the time to sift through the threads. So, thanks for answering my question, kinda. When I said Root & Install a custom Rom I did not mean that in sequential order. Simply that I would like a Rom that has root baked into it, or be root-able.
Unlock your device via Asus's unlock tool app.
Download and install Rom Manager from Market.
Install CWM via Rom Manager.
Download the rom you want to flash and transfer it to your tablet.
Reboot into CWM and make your first nandroid backup.
Wipe Cache/Factory reset.
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Flash the rom and reboot.

Yeah, you do. But I unlocked it via the unlock tool APK and then from there just installed CWM via fastboot and pushed the rom and crap to it. Thanks! Installing now!
This will be my first time rooting/unlocking. I really want to get Root access on my Nexus 6 at get a notification LED again. I've did some research and feel comfortable using wugfreshs toolkit to achieve this. My question is on returning back to stock to get otas when they are available or another way to get updates once im unlocked and rooted. If someone could point me to a guide or documentation on this, it would be awesome. I've looked but cannot find much info that the next article didn't differ from. Really im looking for if a custom recovery will help doing updates or a stock recovery is better. Which way is the best way to apply updates and if re rooting will be required. Im sorry if this info is out there I've just not had much look finding it. Thanks
First of all youre in the n9 forum not the n6 forum. Id learn to use fastboot so you dont get yourself into trouble with toolkits. The easy way to get the next update without fastboot would be to install a custom recovery. Then when an update comes out somebody here on xda will make a flashable zip that you can apply through your custom recovery. And you'll be able to install su through the recovery to regain root. But seriously learn how to use fastboot.

As the other poster said this is the N9 forum but your question is generic to both so this is as good a place as any.Can use same Wugs to go back to stock. But as has been said you learn nothing from using tool kits. Need to learn adb and fastboot so when you brick you know how to fix it. There is no such thing as an OTA update if you are rooted or have any modded file, recovery, ect. OTA only works on full stock. That being said the most viable and efficient way to update is to just wait for the next full Factory image and flash it. That means one flash session for each update. Makes no sense to go to stock, flash OTA and then root and recovery. Might as well just do full update and have clean device and root and recovery all in one session. Or just stay stock with no root, recovery and mods and take the OTAs and be happy with stock.
In the procees of rooting, I had flashed CWM using Odin using recommened settings and it passed and rebooted to ROM(stock) itself. Then I rebooted to recovery mode but what I could see is the stock system recovery instead of the flashed CWM, and I know it was overwriiten by stock recovery by the system itself. I again did this flashing via ODIN but this time with UNCHECKED AUTO-REBOOT, and maually tried to reboot to recovery with button combinations, but instead rebooted to ROM itself. What should I do now to root my device?
Looking forward for your humble reply.
Thanks in advance ;P

riocrag
You can't have custom recovery with stock firmware, it will restore stock recovery on each boot.
Root doesn't require custom recovery, go read the sticky threads in general forum, search for cf auto root.
I'm don't want just root, I want to flash ROM also.

For your information what I want is not just root but want to flash ROMS through recovery. Since the method I used isn't successful, can I flash recovery after going through CF AutoRoot process? If Yes, how to do it bro?

Root your phone with CF Auto Root
Download and flash a recovery with Rashr (You can donwload it from the PS)
And after this find a rom you want and install it with the recovery BUT always read the section on "How To Install It"
Galaxy S3 International
efeXTREME Lite Rom v5.1
Arter97 Kernel v4.0 beta 3
Finally done,
Read that, read this and all. Especially you boomboomer you have been harsh, I almost spend a whole day on rooting this device that's actually some matter of minutes. First of all let me make you clear that I have gone through each stickies particular to this device and followed the linked tutorials also finally I figured a way out of this stuffs and finally with CWM and ROOT. A little advice from my part, for the sake of getting THANKS just don’t get your head into as many threads as possible. Since I was having deep knowledge about rooting and stuffs (not much about SAMSUNG stuffs), I was able to figure it out. What about if I was a complete noob? Your words should have left me in no hope.
As you leave notes always under your words about what is XDA becoz of noobs,
REMEMBER YOU WERE NOT BORN GEEK
No harsh feelings my friend what you felt by reading this is what I felt when I read yours. Chill bro.

"brief" unequals "harsh", that's all there is to it. This kind of talk is exactly what booboomers sig is intended towards. You discourage the people that wanna help. They tell you where you can find the info you need and you argue about semantics. Not everybody has the time to write a nice novel for everybody asking a question that has been aswered before again and again. I for one have a life that's not electronic. Sometimes less is more and in your case "less" was all boomboomer had time for. So please...
