Recently, I tried taking some photos with my Note and noticed they were really distorted. Upon looking a bit more, there is a crack on the lens! I have no idea how, or why this happened. Any ideas to fix it?
Edit - I'm refering to the glass above the actual camera.

Recently I purchased the Htc One for tmobile. I loved every last bit of it untill two nights ago when i put it under my bed completely fine and woke up to a cracked camera lens. This has to be a build quality issue because my phone was in a case. Can someone please give me a solution as how to fix it? thanks!
A build quality issue would be if the lens just fell out. Sounds like you scratched it.
Sadly I dont know how you'd fix it. Fixing the lens on the GS3 was pretty easy. Not so sure about this guy.

If the camera lens area was assembled wrong, it could crack from stress.

Sorry Its really hard to repair it yourself, just use the device warranty from HTC, it has a year warranty.

I wonder how many reviews got it like this and never noticed, it's easy to not see for the masses!

wow. i would not have realized for a long while that there is a piece of protective plastic over the camera.
Does it distort quality? Not sure I wanna take it off, seems clear enough to where it wouldn't impact photos.

That's funny! I activated the low light auto setting, and took a bunch early this morning. They turned out magnitudes better than any other phone in similar settings.
This would include IP5, note2, razr, razr hd, SGN. Only one better *might* be the htc one, but the reviews are about 50/50 on that phone being *better"* than the S4 in low light.

Turn on the low light setting on your S4.
Go take some pictures in low light (not a dark room!).
Say something like "holy cow" in your head and smile :good::good:
edit: really just wanted to point out the plastic, it's probably been missed in reviews, and will IMHO affect image quality for the 100% crop type comparisons.
Also, we have slow and fast motion settings for video, just like the note 2, this is a LOT of fun to play around with, and an easy way to temporarily eat up a lot of space on a 64GB SD card

I'm not a fan of the fact that you can't use all the features together. i.e., you can't use auto night mode AND auto flash...

All low light mode does is raise the ISO and shutter speed. Images are full of noise and really over sharpened.
What's the best way to remove this silly plastic cover? There isn't an easy edge to yank the stupid thing off that I can find and I really don't want to shove a knife in the center of the lens to yank it off. lol

Just used a fingernail...I was worried about scratching it too but once I got under it came right off and no scratches. I tried tape first but it wouldn't come up...had to get the nail under the plastic and that was no easy task.
Maybe a female with longer nails might help. I would've asked the wife if she was here.
Just got my s5 from T-mobile last night and shes beautiful
Just wondering does anyone feel the front facing camera gives you a funky look? Its making my head look super longitudinal as if someone has squeezed the camera! Especially when I position my head so show at the bottom of the screen. Please let me know have a great day !
It isn't very good, that would be my best guess

Your head may be defective, I'd take it back to a T-Mobile store and see if they can help you with that.
Perhaps if you posted a sample image (not necessarily of your face) to see if something it obviously wrong. The front facing camera does have a wide angle lens which might be what it causing you to perceive it as "squished." If you rotate the camera do you observe the same effect?
I knew one person would say that lol thanks for clearing the air Haha.. Anyways I'd be more than happy to share..
Also would like to add that I went to T-Mobile and all their phones including my friends front camera are doing the same problem it may be a glitch in the software. It's just how you angle it it had to be at the top of the screen or bottom.
Here is a picture of my face in the center and on the edge, I'll let you be the judge and try it on your phone as well. I am holding my phone horizontal for this one and it made my face wider if I hold it longitude my face will be longer.
Notice how the center picture looks perfect versus when you position yourself at the bottom or the top of the screen.

haha thank god! i swear to you i went to at&t and t-mobile and used my friends s5 and all their camera's are like this.. it also does it in snapchat if you use that... pretty much anything with front facing camera..phone is fairly new and im sure people will start noticing it sooner or later! Shall we email samsung or something ? lol
I think I have an idea about what you're experiencing, I always thought I looked funnier than I normally do when talking a photo with the front facing camera lol. I found that I look normal before taking the picture but then after taking the photo and when reviewing it something always looked off. I then found out about the "Save as flipped' option when you press the settings button while in the front facing camera mode. I turned that on and it was better, granted all its doing is flipping the image but it just looked so funny when that setting is off for some reason.
Try it out and see if its the same for you.
It's not that. When you have the phone in front of your face taking a "selfie", try moving the phone up and down as far as you can while still seeing the screen and have the camera on your face. You'll notice your face and head starts to distort.
Sent from my SM-G900T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
My guesses:
a) The lens itself is distorted intentionally to fill the extra "widescreen" areas of your display with an otherwise 4:3 ratio sensor.
b) The digital picture is distorted intentionally to fill that same extra void when viewing a 4:3 ratio picture on a 16:9 display.
Think of the days when HD (720p) was brand-new. Some of the first broadcasts that were in "HD" were simply 4:3 ratio videos stretched on the sides to fill up that extra space on your TV (versus having the "black bars" fill it instead).
It could be that the front facing camera just isn't very good, poorly made. I mean it's 2.1 mp. People still use their back camera for selfie lol

I don't have the phone yet but reading for education. This may be silly to ask, but does the distance you put the camera from you change the distortion? I know our arms are only so long, but just a thought.... Since it was pointed out that it does have the extra wide angle lens

Hey more knowledge to you my friend! I did a test with distance and I got the same distortion no matter how far i stood from the front facing camera, if I got near the top of the bottom of the screen, I would become bulging, and a little longitudinal.

You bring up a great point with the "widescreen" but it is 2014 don't you think they would have thought of a way to get a wider ratio with out distorting an image? This makes the front facing camera unusable to some. The HTC one also has a front widescreen screen camera but does not distort.

Hey good idea and it made a difference, I lowered resolution to 1.6 mp1440x 1080 and the effect was still there. 4:3
I put the resolution on 1mp 1072x1072 and the effect is completely gone. Ratio is 1:1
Then I put the resolution on what seems to be the lowest 640x480 .3 mp ratio 4:3 and the effect seems to SLIGHTLY be there by hardly noticeable.
For now I will be leaving it on. 3 mp it seems to be usable and not noticeable. But when I opened any third party applications that utilizes my camera like Snapchat it is distorted
Hi All,
Got mine today after a long battle with the M8 and its many problems. . .
I have noticed mine has a gap in the top right like many others have but has anyone been in for a waterproof test yet?
In all honestly i'm just curious to know rather then it being a problem for me as I dont have the desire to be dipping into water or swim with it.
It doesnt bother me although I know its not nice having it there but again it doesnt look as bad as the way the original HTC One had gaps open round the metal.
So yep anyone concerned or even taken it to a Sony centre?
Cheers
Mine doesn't have any gap. Well not that I can see. I will not risking trying to dip in in water. Even though it is supposed to be waterproof I am not sure they will cover it.

yeah i dont have the desire as I say to be dipping into water . .its seems more ppl have the gap then others . ..
coming from the M8 with multiple scuffs and marks on the metal out the box its really pleasing that its just a gap i have as it doesnt look bad but still the waterproof protection and dust may still be affected by this.
plus I plan to put a case on mine in the end so the gap will be covered up anyway . .I know I shudnt ave to cover it but Im never gonna be carrying a glass phone naked!
Where did you order yours? Maybe you can get it exchanged and hope to get one of the newer batches?
It was phone's 4 u in UK so not the best place to get phone's in my experience so far.. I have been advised to go into store so staff can have a look...

Has it ever been proven that the 'gap' is actually a problem? People seem to get them replaced without ever testing, could be all for nothing?

I believe due to the scarcity of Sony stores in certain areas that people just decide to not bother testing and just sent it back.
Don't know if this is related but anyone who has the gap issue, is the camera lens slightly off centre too? Mine is (although it doesn't affect the camera quality).
I'm not sure what I should do because I've only recently realised I have the very minute gap at the top right but I got my phone on the 22nd of April through mobiles.co.uk so I wonder if I can simply go to a carphone warehouse shop to discuss it or if I have to do it through mobile.co.uk.

But i don't think this small gap become cause of water damage!
i mean this gap is in surface of phone and it s not like hole that connect outside to inside of phone!
so it s just ugly...
:good:
I have the gap issue, there is a slight gap on the front top right & a more noticeable one on the front bottom left, I didn't spot it at first but a mate that was admiring the phone did as he spotted a small bit of tobacco trapped between the gap & the bezel.
