CM7 up to par on Facinate? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am currently running CM7 nightlies on my Incredible and it is running flawlessly. With that said, my brothers wife has had a terrible time with her stock Facinate on Verizon. I would like to install CM7 on her phone since I have had such a good experience with it on my Incredible.
How is CM7 on the Facinate? Any issues/limitations? Any certain build or kernel suggestions?
Thanks!

I ran CM7 for about 2 weeks. It's stable, which is a good thing. I like the themes option.. but for me.. it just wasn't fast enough.. don't get me wrong, it's quick and responsive, and it does not lag... my speed concerns is after bootup or reboot... it seems to take forever for everything to load and run right. Also, I found the Market (which is only available via seperate flash) lost it's connection more than once, and I had to reboot several times to get it to work.
This is the main reason I dumped CM7 for the Fascinate. I need my stuff to work.. plain and simple.
I went back to stock froyo ED05 2.2.2, then updated through VZN update to Gingerbread 2.3.5. Then Rooted the phone using superuser.zip below. I ODIN'd CWM Recovery, and flashed SU to root (see attachments) and then flashed the KGB Kernel located here. (The lastest is 12.12, but I don't like it as much as the 11.27 version.. maybe it's the smiley face boot screen that got me)
I couldn't ask for a better setup. Running ADW Launcher EX... smooth as a babies bottom and everything works as it should.
I hope this help you mate.

If she doesn't know what CM7 is I wouldn't install it for her. Last I checked, there are still some issues. Phantom ring is one where you get a loud ringtone in the earpiece after you answer a call every now and then. When I was running it, I had to toggle airplane mode sometimes to get back 3G data. It's mostly very functional but there are little things like that.
For a non power user just go with the EH03 debloated ROM or maybe superclean.

CM7 with glitch kernel v13 runs pretty much flawless for me. Imo its the fastet setup you can put on the fascinate right now(when its setup correctly)...pool party is another good one. I have tried every current rom/kernel and I keep coming back to this setup. I do prefer go launcher ex over the adw, w/ ICS theme. Up until 2 months ago TW was all I ran because mtd roms still had some bugs. Now that MTD is fully functional it was a no brainer to make the switch!

He could also Odin the EH03 based Geewiz (which is a debloat of stock EH03 with nothing added) or flash Superclean 3 which is a debloat + a bit more. Either way he will get a rooted setup nearly identical to yours with a lot less steps and no super slow OTA download. =)
As for your reports on CM7...that is a bit strange. CM7 is almost universally considered faster and more responsive than the Touchwiz releases. Personally, I preferred Sbrisens Pool Party when I used a mtd ROM which can be found over at rootzwiki. And while I'm on the subject of rootz, Awesome Sauce is another excellent Touchwiz based ROM if you would prefer to stay on something gcloser to Samsung's releases.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I actually took your advice on this one as well. I'm now running CM7.1 Stable with Glitchv13 kernel. It seems to run a lot more stable with the glitch kernel... so far so good.
I also bounce between Go Launcher, adw, LLP, and the Espier (iphone)... lol Thanks agian.

Has the phantom ring been fixed? I actually switched to MIUI and glitch v13 last week and haven't seen it.

Not from my experience. I am running the latest nightly and still get phantom ring every now and again. Its a small price to pay for the features added from this great ROM!

I got the phantom ring running CM7.2 RC0, Glitch13.
Have to have Glitch for the in-call volume bug.

+1 mine works awesome Except for the occasional phantom ring

The phantom ring is getting so bad that I'm going to have to ditch CM7. I can't have my phone stuck phantom ringing when on silent during business meetings.
This is ridiculous, someone please help.

As much as I love all the features, it's pretty annoying when a phantom ring goes off in class

Are you guys using the stock kernel or glitch? I honestly don't know if there are any changes in the glitch kernel that would effect phantom rings, but I only had one phantom ring in my time on CM7 (using glitch).

I'm coming from every version of glitch including test. They never went away. Trying CM7.2 RC kernel as my last chance.

if CM7 isnt snappy enough for you i would definitely recommend OMGB, I used that for awhile and it was great.

I'm on TSM Resurrection, with KGB. Amazing battery life compared to stock and CM7. Zero issues so far except BLN that gets stuck on.
I have no idea why CM7 is so pitiful on the Fassy.

cm7 was far from pitiful...cm9 poops on touchwiz.

Yeah but stuff doesn't work like in cm7 the latest gapps don't offer Google voice or voice to text from the keyboard. I believe I had the same issues with cm9... along with lags and freezes. I'd go to cm7 in a heartbeat if I can get the voice text work in SMS. Just imho

[Q] frankin twiz vs bionix?

I'm about to flash a ROM. which one is better?
They are both excellent, look at the feature list and see which has the core pieces that you are looking for.
I'm running bionix 1.4, and it is by far the best rom out in my opinion. Its very snappy with either kernel. 100000000000000x better than stock and lag is virtually gone
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Another vote for Bionix. 1.4 is amazing and Sombionix is a god among men.
I don't always complain, but when I do, I #BlameWes
Try both. Results may vary.
I personally use Frankin-Twiz Update4.
Having flashed just about every rom available here, I lean Bionix 1.4 oc.uv.
It just feels better to me--all the roms are well put together, but it is all going to come down to what you like in your UI and what is on the phone.
They are both great, but I have been using Bionix because I use most of the TW apps which of are taken out on F/T.
Both are solid. I've been using F-Twiz3 for a few weeks, and now F-Twiz4 for a day. F-Twiz3 was very solid, no problems.
Be aware that bionix 1.5 is having bluetooth problems. I and many others simply couldn't get BT to work, so I went with F-Twiz4.
I too am usually a loyal fan of bionix, but i need to have the bluetooth working so currently i am running franken-twiz 4. as soon as sombionix gets the bluetooth fixed though i will be going back over to his rom. of course i wouldn't have any objection to his jp3 froyo rom if it gets swype working better and the market gets fixed.
Thanks guys. I tried both the ROMs out, and really liked them both. But the graphical changes that were made on both ROMs was the deal breaker, and I decided to change my kernel to get the speeds I wanted.
But... to save starting a new thread... I kind of want to replace my stock music player, because I really don't like it.
I searched through the forum, and didn't find much.
Do you guys have any suggestions?

[Q] CM7 vs ComRom

Hey Everyone,
I have been running ComRom 2.1 on my Fassy. I had to get mine replaced as it was having too many hardware based issues. Now it is sadly fully stocked. I was going to go back to ComRom 2.1 but saw that CM7 is now fixed and functional. I ran CM6 on my OG Droid. I loved it on that phone.
I am just looking to hear from anyone that has ran both and what they liked or disliked about either.
I'm not looking to start a war of what's better. I'm only looking for a comparison of the two as well as which is working better for folks.
Thanks!

Well cm7 is gingerbread with an unbelievable GB kernel from the nexus s. It's AOSP as well which is superior in everyway. The only thing that com rom has over cm7 is that it doesn't have the few little annoying bugs that cm7 does. AOSP is pure Google android OS with Cyanogenmod's own custom tweaks added in for performance and customization. Com rom is based on TouchWiz, which is samsung's disgraceful attempt at a codebase, was altered from the original uncut Google AOSP for the sake of financial gain by the proprietor (Samsung). Bottom line, cm7 is a monster of a rom, considered by many to be the best and the elite of all rom's. Com rom is very good in that TSM was able to make it usable. A lot of hard work was pit into it and it's the best TW rom for fascinate.....but it's still touchwiz. Cm7/miui/omfgb/omgb all the way man. Were beginning to do away with TW.

I am going with CM7 to try it out. So far it is insanely smooth and fast. I am about to try out a couple of the kernels to try to find which will work best with my phone.
Thanks for the info all!
Tried CM7 for a couple days, fast and smooth. But went back to ComRom for a couple reasons. First was the camera, the TW camera is just better. Second is video playback. I use my phone as a little TV in bed and the video player and all the other video apps I tried suck compared to the TW video on the ComRom. Another reason was the wifi\3G kept dropping and it wasn't a dealbreaker like the other two but still very annoying.
Both ROMs have their own set of pros and cons.
If you love TW and its TW based apps go for the ComRom. If you could careless about those, then CM7 hands down.
Biggest things I've noticed after switching:
- Better battery life
- Faster
- Smoother
- CM7 Customization is great
Other comments:
- CM7 doesn't really have too many themes yet since it's still fairly new.
IMO I am using CM7 and it works, BUT is no where near as functional as Com Rom.
example:
Livable bugs but they are annoying in CM7:
-No WiFi Tethering
-No in-call volume (biggest deal breaker that is making me want to switch back to Com Rom)
-Proximity sensors do not work!
I was waiting for an update but it looks like CM7 has stopped dev.
Dont get me wrong i love this phone and Thank the developers everyday for their hard work!
The only reason to go with CM7 is to be able to say you have GB on your phone otherwise stick with Com Rom.

Yes i was on the build 11 with the glitch kernel [glitch kernel was super fast!]
-in call volume was not loud.
- i got an error when turning the wifi tether on
- and you have to push the volume rockers or the power button to hang up the phone.

Well, build 11 isn't that old.. but yeah, the call volume is not as loud as it could be, and the screen won't turn back on once you pull the phone away from your face.. but I had no problems with WiFi tether.. my NookColor running CM7 can see and use the AP..
I just installed the 7/24 version... changelog is not out yet.. hope they fixed even more bugs..

you must not be looking very hard
I've run both roms, CM7 and the latest ComRom. In everyday use, I can't tell the difference between the two. Honestly. ComRom ran super well, but twice it crashed on me and would only boot to safe mode (where I would endure force-close hell), and I would have a ***** of a time recovering it. After getting fed up with that and no longer trusting ComRom, I switched to CM7.
I haven't really seen the same bugs that other people have. I have no complaints with it on the stock kernel. On the OTB kernel, it was laggy as hell (felt like my roommate's ancient mytouch 3g). On the glitch kernel, it was suuuper smooth, but my battery life was suuuper ****.
So I'm using the stock kernel that comes with CM7. Unfortunately, I got twice the battery life on ComRom (2 days) vs what I get on CM7 (a day if I'm lucky). Of course, YMMV.

CM7 has MORE themes, just look for CM7 themes /ThemeChooser Here are some
You could always try both for a few days and see how you like them.
I came straight from community rom and no contest. Cm7 is better in literally every way. I especially like the improved GPS and Bluetooth performance. The only drawback Ive seen is its a little too quiet in calls if you're in a particularly loud area. So as long as you aren't a construction worker or a traffic cop, I'd say cm7.

About CM7 themes: try Android Themes in the Android Development and Hacking forum. You'll find more themes there than a thrift store has used shoes
About call volume - I am running miui 7/22 which has better volume (on its stock kernel) than CM7. The miui theme manager has its own built-in catalog of online themes you can download and apply. Plus, it lets you actually edit your theme, mixing and matching elements from several of your installed themes.

LOL i don't think you meant to use the word Literally.
The sensor doesn't wake the phone when you pull it away from your face! that is literally not better than ANY Froyo ROM or even the sd card eating EC09!
I admit the glitch kernel made it run super smooth, but if you put com rom next to cm7, other than a few skins you really cant tell the two apart.
Like i said the ONLY reason to have CM7 on your phone is to boast you have Gingerbread!
If you disagree that is fine, this is my opinion but i am getting tired of people pumping up CM7, saying it is "hands down the best" when simply it is lacking. It is functional yes but it is maybe 98% functional to any Froyo roms 100% functionality.
I will be very excited to see when CM7 is great, the only thing is all the GREAT devs Left for other phones and i doubt we will see a fantastic GB rom like we did with ComRom's and EF.
Please if you disagree i would love to hear what makes CM7 better than Froyo roms. I would love to hear why everyone is so amped on CM7, I have tried both.
Once again this is only my opinion. PS I LOVE THIS PHONE!
Reasons to try CM7:
1. Continuing support / updates - the community and the Evil Fascination ROMs are probably the last you'll see of touchwiz-based ROMs, as most of our developers have moved on to the Droid Charge or the Incredible 2. CM7, on the other hand, will soon get nightly builds and support from the cyanogenmod team (thanks for all your hard work to get CM7 developed for the Fascinate jt1134!)
2. Themes - easier to apply, greater selection, many of them just done in more detail than those on touchwiz-based on ROMs.
3. Netflix only works on GB.
Reasons Not to Try CM7:
1. In-call audio.
2. In-call audio.
3. In-call audio. Are you seeing a trend here?
Reasons to try MIUI:
1. Miui will also get ongoing support and new releases from andmer (thanks andmer and jt)
2. Themes are even easier to apply than on CM7.
3. In-call audio is a little better than CM7 at this point.
Reasons Not to Try MIUI:
1. In-call audio is still not as good as touchwiz-based ROMs.
2. The look and feel of MIUI is not for everyone.
Bottom Line: it's whatever you want to choose

Actually netflix does work on stock fascinates now.
I really liked cm7 because of it's speed, but that was really it.
Cm7 uses a crappy dialer
Cm7 uses a crappy calendar app
Cm7 doesn't have fully functional proximity sensors
flash only works on the camera not as a flashlight
Camera app is not as good on cm7
Bottom line: I could live with everything but in call audio and proximity sensors. As soon as netflix started working on fascinates I switched back to comm rom 2.1

[Q] Finding a good ROM

I need help finding a simple working ROM. My wife has this phone, and she has seen me put ROM's and all that on my phone and wants me to put one on hers. Problem is, I need to find one that works (isn't an alpha, works with almost all applications). Any help would be appreciated!
Try SuperClean 3. Basically a tweaked version of Samsung's TW Gingerbread.
Link? Im having trouble finding it

2nd for SC3. I run it with imoseyons lean kernel and have NO issues. Great battery life, fast (2100 to 2300 on quadrant scores), and STABLE!
3Rd for SC. All though cm7 is stable fast and pretty simple to navigate.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
Plus you can flash the TW4 addon for Superclean 3 v0.5
Terminators run on Android...
IMO CM7 and MIUI suck for the fascinate, Go with Superclean of GeeWiz ROMs for Fascinate. I'm stable, quick, no glitches, lags, chokes, all apps work flawlessly. after flashes dozens of roms over a period of months.. I am content with my setup.
See sig for links. Good luck.
I would cast another vote for SC3. I was on CM7 since nightly 15 or so thru 112. Loved it, but in my low-signal area the data drop problem was significant. I was toggling airplane mode numerous times a day.
I tried SC3 to get more stable and have been impressed. There's things I miss from CM7 but SC3 is a lot more stable in my case. I'm also running comradesven's kgb kernel.
Another observation is that the EH03 radio works better on SC3 than it did on CM7. I tried it and went back to ED05 which worked best for me on CM7. With SC3/EH03, my data speeds have improved somewhat over CM7/ED05.
YMMV, good luck.
edit: got to change my signature I guess.
If you want a stock like experience without all of Verizon's crap (like you'd get on the Showcase) then I'd go with GeeWiz; it also has great kernels with it. If you want one with a more current and customizable feel, then Superclean3 is hard to beat.
Just my 2ยข worth.

It's fast, no bloat, really stable, and it has lots of goodies. can't wait for my phone to get shipped back from repair so I can use it again!!
agreed, go with SC ROM unless you want ICS. Then, for now CM9/JT's builds are the only game in town right now.
Just installed SC. Wow, love love love it! It even somehow fixed the camera lag I was having. Was taking like 1.5-2 seconds to take a photo after press after Verizons last update. Back to near instant again.
I backed up the phone with Titanium, then restored once SC was on. Worked awesome.

[Q] Favorite ICS ROM?

Alright, everyone. You knew this was coming. What's your favorite ICS ROM so far and why do you like it? I've only tried ICS Passion, but it's pretty slick. As a side note, please share whether or not your favorite ROM supports USB mass storage for the SD card. Passion doesn't yet.
Passion supports sd card and has for a while, at least it works on my phone. Passion is made specifically for Vibrant, while ICSSGS is made for I9000 and ported to vibrant, CM9 is what passion is based off of. Currently Passion V13 is the best out there
I have Passion v13 and UMS does not work. I heard that the last compatible version was 10.6, which seems to be the case. Do you have it working on v13?
Edit: Wow, so I just plugged it in and after not working many times, it now works. Both internal and external SD show up too, eventhough ICS isn't supposed to support internal SD storage.
I used it maybe five minutes ago to transfer an apk, and its been working for me since 10.6, when was the last time you wiped?
and yes I have V13
I just flashed v12 a week ago and then v13 maybe 4 or 5 days ago. It seems to be working now, though. Have you tried any ROMs other than Passion?
I used ICSSGS up until V10.6 of passion came out, I recently flashed ICSSGS RC4.2 and it wasn't as smooth as Passion V13
Good to know I made the right decision by going with Passion first. Do you use CPU governor in Passion?
I have been using lulzactive, and the lulzactive app which allows you to customize the governor
Does your keyboard lag a bit when you exit messaging? Because that's really the only thing that's not-so-smooth about Passion.
Yes it does, but I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it. the keyboard also gets laggy after typing more that 100-ish words
v13
I had installed ics v13 last week but could not get GPS to work. The rom itself is awesome and VERY smooth. However, I needed my GPS, so I had to go back to bionix v 1.3.1.
I may try upgrading to ics once the GPS issues have been fixed for most people.

I did notice that the call quality was not as great. Some cracking sounds, etc. The UI and everything else on the ROM was awesome. I just think that for me (I use my gps often) it would not work.
Bionix v1.3.1 is great, however it is based on 2.2, and I have had some issues with the notification pull down lagging extremely. I will need to ask in QA if anyone else is having that issue.
you really should make this a poll. i'd be interested in the results. well, my 2 cents: passion is, by far, the most stable and has almost everything working. AOKP and CNA are less stable, but have a lot more customization features.
AOKP is reasonably stable for me using Nelson's latest kernel instead of Glitch. the lockscreen, battery, and toggles are great. only thing i can do without is the pink unicorn.

you really should make this a poll. i'd be interested in the results. well, my 2 cents: passion is, by far, the most stable and has almost everything working. AOKP and CNA are less stable, but have a lot more customization features.
AOKP is reasonably stable for me using Nelson's latest kernel instead of Glitch. the lockscreen, battery, and toggles are great. only thing i can do without is the pink unicorn.

I have only tried Passion v12 and v13. the problem for me is that with so many issue still lingering in everyday items (GPS, voice sounds with the MUTE/UNMUTE 'fix'), I will rather stick to a Gingerbread or Froyo Rom.
I currently use FishManMod's Bionix v1.3.1 with the BlueMyst theme and I also installed the ICS fonts. Looks great, is fast, and everything works.
Until there is a smooth ICS rom with good battery life (reason why I hated CM7) and everything working, I won't go through the hassle of upgrading.
That's just my two cents.
I used to use Passion, but then I switched to OneCosmic RC3.1 and found it incredibly smooth. However, in order to get my GPS to work, I had to use the Passion kernel with OneCosmic's ROM. When I tried upgrading to OneCosmic RC4.x, it wiped my EFS...I learned the hard way that a backup was necessary. I ended up getting that fixed, and since then, I've switched to Passion v13. I find it to be great so far...everything seems to work well: GPS; purchasing apps from Market; etc.
Maybe if/when OneCosmic puts out RC5, I'll switch back over and check it out.
I got my gps working using this post:

Now that passion v13 is working and seems to be stable, I'm going to stick with it for awhile. Until something more interesting comes along... AOKP sounds interesting - thanks db3.

[Q] Wanting a new ROM, cant decide.

I have Eclipse 1.1 (old I know) it was great when it first came out and I flashed it. But now I need something new bc its not working as good, and I know theres better versions and other ROMs that are possibly better.
Any suggestions on which ROM to flash and why?
Depends on what you want. If you want a fully functional ROM I'd check out the latest edition of Eclipse.
Cyanogenmod 7.2 rc1 has a small amount of bugs, but is for the most part fully functional. HDMI mirroring doesn't work and that's the one and only downside to me. I still use CM7 as a "daily driver" so to speak. Lots of customization and with the hacks/mods found in this forum I get excellent signal strength, connection speeds and battery life. Wifi still sleeps when the screen's off, but with the v3 build.prop mashup it reconnects on waking within seconds every single time.
Cyanogenmod 9 alpha 3 is somewhat buggy as it's in its early alpha stages. There's no camera yet, but DZK already said there will be a fix for alpha 4. Same with aces miui. It's real slick, being on ics. I like it, but won't stay until there's a working camera and more stability. When that happens this rom will be simply amazing. Overall it's pretty sweet and at the very least, worth checking out/playing around with.....
MIUI4 will be awesome too once the bugs are sorted and fixed. As stated before- the next release will also have a working camera. MIUI is probably one of my favorites if not my favorite but right now its way too buggy for me to use. More so than cm9. Couldn't deal with the bugs Ace is hard at work bringing us more updates and when he finally gets this where he wants it MIUI will more than likely replace cm7 as my daily rom. It's a great ROM in general but I couldn't stay on miui for more than like an hour, personally.
Definitely go into each roms topic and check out the screenshots and videos if there are any. Also look for the working features and known bugs/issues. Honestly I say give them ALL a try and see what best suits you. I only really posted about the newer ones. If I remember correctly molten isn't being updated anymore after 2.3 and I keep forgetting liberty even exists, lol.......
Cyanogenmod all day
I started with Eclipse 1.3 and then went to 2.1 running scripts and about everything else with it. Then when CM9 alpha came out, I had to try it. CM9 alpha works great for me. I needed my camera, so I flashed back to CM7. When the beta version of CM9 rolls around, that's gonna be the ticket!
IMHO- CM7
I can't believe how smooth and FAST my phone is with CM7. The camera works great, very little to no lag at all with anything I have found. There's all kinds of customizations for it. I'm not running any scripts, only CM7 and SD Increase from the market. My phone is fun again and I'm not hesitant to show somebody up with a whyphone like I was before. Try it and see.
Also check out this thread for sure!!

Are you pretty good with computers, tech, etc.? If you want a fast update, just flash CM7 since it is on the same kernel as the version of Eclipse you are on. If you try to update to the latest Eclipse, you have to go through the process of using the SBF to get to stock, updating to 2.3.5 then flash the new version. Its up to you though. CM7 and Eclipse are the most stable ROMs we have at the moment until some bugs get worked out in CM9.
Thanks everyone. I am on Eclipse 2.2.1 as of right now (w/speedy script 7 and other tweaks/apps). Ill probably try CM7 in the future since its already on my sdcard.

Just remember you need to be on 2.3.4 before flashing CM7.
Man I don't know what it is but.....
I used to run Eclipse 2.1 and scripted to the 23498457890345th power maxed out turnaround wing dinger squared. I thought it was as good as it could get. But when I went to CM7, I giggled at what I "thought" I had. Hands down the way to go, until CM9
I would use cm7. Just because its stable and has the best UI in my option and has pretty good performance. or you could wait for cm9 to get more stable with a working camera and better performance.
Liberty 3
Just Rooted and Flashed for the first time.
I went with Eclipse 2.2.1 - because the HDMI support was kind of a deal breaker for me. (Netflix, FPSE, SnesEX, etc. on a big screen!) But I was wondering why none of you mentioned Liberty 3? I haven't tried anything other than Eclipse 2.2.1 so I don't have an educated opinion to share, but other than CM7 it seemed like Liberty 3 and Eclipse were the two other "stable" ROMs in the DEV section.
Is Liberty "bad" or do you guys just not use it, and why?
Also, I flashed what I *thought* was the latest build of Eclipse 2.2.1 (from the official thread) but there are only 5 pull down toggles on my notification panel - I thought there were supposed to be 7? Did I miss something?

I haven't been on eclipse in a while so I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I thought there was an option in settings to set those.
I can't say for sure why nobody mentioned liberty though, it might be because it doesn't offer much compared to eclipse. Also, it was supported for maybe 2 months max while I'm pretty sure nitro is still pushing out updates for the x2(somebody correct me if I'm wrong).

I totally agree with this guy. It all depends on what you want out of your phone. If you can sacrifice the extra cool doohickies I say CM9 all the way cause alpha 4 just came out and it's pretty sweet, working camera too.

The toggles are scrollable. You have to scroll to the right to see the rest.

I loved cm7 as my first and only rom but my 3g sucks, dolphin force closes, camera is buggy etc I'm going to reflash before jumping to eclipse which I've heard is most stable ...
I loved cm7 but the broken orientation sensor in the kernel killed it for me. I now run eclipse 2.2.1. It was a bugger to get installed. Having to wipe cache at a different point than instructions indicate. And also I have a little touch-screen delay.
