Bell SGS2 High Ram Usage - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I've had my SGS2 since the day it came out in Canada. Until about a month ago, my phone was doing fine until I noticed it got a bit slow. My RAM usage when no applications are turned on is 300MB. It used to be 180-190, but it's drastically increased. Does anybody else have this problem? And if so, how do I fix
EDIT: The 300 MB is even after clearing RAM. it?

Are u sure thats how it was before? Mine has been at around 300mb+ since I got and also after flashing stock roms I think thats normal.

Yea it was regularly in the low 200s or high 100s. Now its always in the 300s with everything turned off. So is is just me and you or does anyone else have this problem?

Hey man , honestly you shouldn't be worried about RAM . Lots of threads here that talk about it and the thing that stands out the most in all of the thread is "Unused RAM is wasted RAM" . I wouldn't really worry about RAM because if you need more , it'll just take from the other used RAM . 900MB of RAM is more than enough to play a game , while listening to music , messaging , etc.
But what I don't know is whether more RAM uses more battery life . THAT I cannot say .
Correct me if I'm wrong .

1GB RAM ???

hello all,
sorry if this has been asked before (it prolly has been, i didnt find it though):
the atrix got 1gb ram right? after a reboot there is only around 570mb free ram...
after a few days without rebooting iam stuck around 440-480mb ram...
1st: where is my 1gb?
2nd: why do i even loose more ram?
sorry iam really new to android.
thanks for the help.

i got the launcherPro running. should be motoblur disabled now?.
thanks for the fast answer !
Yes it has 1gb 200mb is reserved for the webtop and 800mb is for android
you might want to read up on how linux and android USE ram also. free ram is wasted ram
is it bloatware
So its normal i only have roughly 600 mb left. Ok thx a lot.
Can you help me with another problem.?
I read somewhere that you don't need a task killer. I have always used one to get back to like 500mb. Now you tell me unused ram is wasted ram. I installed autokiller after some advice and opened some games and stuff. Later i was at 154 unused ram. After 2 hours standby i was at 237mb unused ram. Would i ever get back to 400+ ? And is it really better or at least soesnt matter for battery life?
Thx for help

I found that to be true (not needing a task killer) but only under Gingerbread (I've noticed that since I upgraded my Nexus One to Gingerbread), but on FroYo that's not really the case, or so I've noitced.
However I found that the task killer included on the Atrix works really well (much better than any other on the Market). It's just a matter of selecting the apps that you don't want to auto close and that's it. The battery last a bit longer and the device does not heat up at all.
Cheers!

Heres how I see it.
On your computer, you're always scrambling for more ram right? Because you are running multiple applications at once. You have a music player, a game, chat, windows itself, antivirus etc.
On your phone, it depends more on your processor speed. You arent multitasking like crazy (and if you are your phone would start to heat up really rapidly) Android allocates ram accordingly to what you are running in the foreground and apps that arent open but were opened recently. That way, if you reopen a recently closed app, it is still in memory and will open quicker. If you don't access the closed app after a while, it will clear itself from memory. You definitely don't need a task killer for android, only more processing speed.
I only have 325 of ram

Bingo. So many people freak out that they don't have enough RAM... it's getting annoying seeing as how the Android OS has been out for a long enough time to understand this now.
Even of you cant find it it doesnt matter. Your phone will tell you.

[Q] Phone Will Lag After Continuous Up Time...

Hey guys... I feel like I cannot keep the phone on for more that 72 hours continuously.
I'm using Galaxy SII, G version (I9100G). Currently everything original (no custom rom/kernel)
I believe that most of Android phones have the same problem.
After 50 hours++ of up time of the phone (I mean the phone keeps on for 50 hours), The phone will become noticeable lag, but just a bit, not too much. One of the best evidence is in the game Fruit Ninja. I will feel the lag everytime I slash the fruit.
I'm sure that most apps is closed (except background apps like samsung keypad) and my battery usage graph is in straight horizontal line (without any optimize software, only with BetterBatteryStats). Only 500 - 600MB of RAM is used and I think this is normal.
After I restart the phone, the phone will become smooth and the RAM will be 300 - 400MB used only. Others do not show any difference.
And sure, the phone will repeat the same problem after some hours.
I wish I can keep the phone on continuously and no need to restart it frequently just like normal phones.
Can someone share some experience about this?
Is there any solution for this?
Or this is the nature of Android?
Can Custom ROM solve this?
Your best bet is to use an app killer program so you can close anything and everything running in the background.
Holy... If you mean task killers, I can tell you that it will not work, but will make the situation far worse for Android 2.3 and up...
I use one that's built in to the ROM that I use and my phone runs great for days on end.
I'm using Memory Booster (RAM Optimizer) as my first experiment to solve this problem...

ram used up

I find that every time I check I am using 470+ ram even after I clear it in task. wtf?
stop clearing task then. its not needed as soon as you do this the required parts will just start back up. you havnt needed to use anything like advanced task killer since android 2.0 we are now on 2.3 time to stop making ur phone use more battery life.
So your telling me that next to stock I should be using up 3/4ths of my ram with no windows or programs opened. Sounds strange to me
yup.. Its how android works.. its not like say the way windows mobile used to be.. having to kill off programs left an right. android keeps those apps in the ram for a reason.
I comprehend the keep running in background, my point is some, I haven't had to bad, people complain of lag or lack of smoothness. Well if I am using all my ram for things running in background am I not restricting the amount I can now pull up. Like I said I am close to stock, couple apps installed, and stock is loading 4-500 megs out of my 750. Hmmm just saying ya know. If you sell me on gig of ram and cut it down to 750 and load it up with 500 in all honesty you are giving me 250. might as well call it an iPhone....hides head and runs.

U are WAY off. The phone is allocated a certain amount of ram for its internal workings. Leaving you the 700+ ram for apps and other things. Ur phone works better if u let it manage Ur ram for u. It will naturally kill off apps as u need more ram for other processes that are being called on. Free ram is wasted ram using the ram will actually make Ur phone smoother. And if Ur not using the super charger script i would take a look at it. It helps as well. Or get Rom tool box and do it manually.

RAM Increase with a custom ROM on The SGS3!!

Folks,
I need to know weather or not is it possible to increase the current RAM for the S3. I have a international version of the S3 in which the ROM has a limitation to 779MB. I hear some devices in US and Korea have a 1GB RAM. So if the device is the same is the RAM limited on the build or the hardware? And is it possible to increase the ram with a customer ROM?

The international version has 1GB of RAM, I think the reason it shows 779MB is because the rest of the RAM is reserved as video memory. Don't quote me on that though.
P.S. The US and Korean versions have 2GB of RAM.
you cant increase it further 779 is the max you will get. us and international variants are different
The reason I asked is. I face alot of performance issues on the SGS3. My Memory always stays at 455 to 600MB usage. I dont have much applications installed .. Only basis ones that I need. Any ideas on optimizing the memory issue?

Are you running the stock rom at this moment or do you have a different launcher?
Its the default rom and unrooted. And also the defualt launcher in S3

You would be better off waiting for the Jelly Bean upgrade in a few weeks .

I don't think RAM is the problem for your performance. My S3 is also running between 450 and 600 and I don't have any performance issues..
There are some tweaks you can try under Settings -> Development like animation scale and background process limit.
When do you have the performance problems?
Do u really think JB will increase perfomance? And I honestly dont think that OTA will be relased anytime in this quater! Plus i prefeer the ripple effect in ICS would samsung keep that in JB too?

I see battery issues at times, also when I clear RAM to free up some memory the home screen goes blank and then appears, I have formatted my phone also, but even using a plain S3 and trying to clear RAM my screen still goes blank. Is this a known issue within S3 when clearing RAM?

When you clear your RAM..all the cache which was generated gets removed hence when you go to your homescreen again..that data has to be loaded again ..and hence the delay...dont try to force your phone..Android has a very good memory management ..it will do it for you..clearing RAM all the time will just make your launcher and other most used apps slow to open...
Yes it is a hardware limitation..we have only 1 GB of inbuilt RAM..of which 221 MB is used by system and the rest is left for your apps...

So you have some battery issues.. Try JuiceDefender to increase your battery life or System Tuner to check the apps that are running in the background...

Tweaks? You shouldn't have to make tweaks to the follow up to the sgs2 with super duper quad core!
Fact is you probably do.. The sgs3 is a fail. There are undeniable performance issues. It is on par with the ZTE Blade.

Agreed, I am really not satisfied with the performance of a quad core processor!! A quad code with a 2100 mah battery is decent but not upto mark what you expect the phone to give an output.
I was better satisfied with my galaxy note with a 2500 mAH battery which ran 3 days using EDGE and 2 days if I'm using HSPDA!!

But it should be possible to use a full 1GB RAM with custom ROM's. Like ive seen a MIUI ROM that allows a full 1Gb usable on the SGS3

Dear Sir, the miui rom shows you the complete 1 GB but the extra 221 mb is not available for your apps..if you have noticed even after a fresh intall the available Ram will hover somewhere around 600-700 MB and not 800-900 MB..
it is just how it is displayed and not used..
hope it will clarify your doubts..
I had huge memory leak issues. My ram used to fall even below 50 MB even after removing all bloat. I finally found the solution by moving to "Foxhund Rom". I have applied his min free ram tweaks. Now My ram never falls below 200 MB which is good enough to run heavy process.
I dont know howto increase RAM storage but there is a way to increase data storage.
Look here
LMFAO some of the comments in this thread are seriously pathetic! Performance issues with this phone? Making it comparable to ZTE Blade? Iphone users and trolls in here much?!?
This phone, bone dry stock is blazing fast and incredibly smooth and with the latest stock latest firmware the home screen redraw is so smooth it doesn't even look like it's redrawn.
With custom roms that keep 200mb clear in RAM all the time, there is no multi tasking because the phone is constantly closing apps to keep 200mb free. It's just to keep people happy that they can see free ram! If it's never used, it's useless..

(Sola) (Q) RAM Usage on Gingerbread?

Yep, this is still a problem.
I just noticed my that Sony may have been right in directing me to check available RAM on ICS. I have a tiny amount of RAM available and had to delete many apps, still the phone doesn't run smoothly.
Anyone here still on Gingerbread? What's your available RAM like? Roughly, how many apps do you have installed? I may switch back, I've had enough.
I can see why this happened:

We do not have the same phones so i do not know if the following is relevant or even possible for you. I recently flashed the ics333 rom with a semaphore kernel on my Galaxy SI and it really flies. If i have understood correctly the semaphore kernel frees up extra ram. I now have on average 140-170Mb available instead of 30-60Mb It makes such a difference. even games like Temple Run which i could not play before work without lag.
You should maybe consider flashing an optimised rom, if available.

A better kernel, or simply a custom ROM, I appreciate your help! :victory:
I came back from my first trip to Paris and my camera app kept freezing, it drove me crazy. I'll definitely look into the kernels.

I just switched back to GB stock ROM (184 kernel) after having tried ICS stock and xICS Hybrid ROM. In both the ICS based ROMs , I found that the battery usage is quite high (both normal usage and standby) . Also the phone started freezing after a certain number of apps were launched. I face no such issues in GB Stock ROM and it is quite fast too. Also Sony has done a good work wid UI esp. Gesture based typing and word predicition(which is quite accurate)
I have around 12-15 apps installed and I use most of them regularly yet I always have around 90-120 MB of free RAM and I have never run into issues with free RAM as such.
Also, while using ICS receiving a call used to be laggy esp when you are in middle of something and u get a call but GB is quite good in that respect. So I can safely suggest GB is well suited for Sola . Go for ICS only if you need a feature specific to it or if you are too crazy about new UI. Hope this helps a bit

That really helps, thanks! :good:
I couldn't remember much about RAM usage on GingerB but I knew that I didn't have that freezing problem with apps or with phone calls etc. On ICS, I checked my RAM and it was constantly around 20MB, I never imagined I'd be the person that installed too many apps for the RAM to handle. I think Sony made some poor decisions re: RAM and OS upgrade.
Thankfully we can backup our ROMS so easily so I think I'll go back to Gingerbread.

Juts to add to my last post, After switching back to GB I found that the battery usage (on standby ) overnight dropped to 3% from 30-40% in case of ICS based ROMs
