Thanks for all the Fish! - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

With the 1.4.1 update, Barnes & Noble has demonstrated an aggressive anti-root and sideloaded apps intent.
There is no reason to think that 1.4.2 and later won't continue in this vein.
I don't want to work with a device from a manufacturer with this attitude. Even things that work today - might not tomorrow.
My still-wrapped Nook Tablet is going back today.
Thanks again to all the developers who worked so hard to make this the best tablet in it's price range!
I do hope B&N achieve the success in this market they so richly deserve.

This is pretty much what I posted on the B&N web site today. They sure make it hard to provide feedback on company policies.
My Nook went back to the local B&N today - but I was totally unsuccessful in getting my reason for return registered.
I stated the Nook Tablet was the best device in it's class - but B&N policies about side-loading apps as evidenced by the 1.4.1 update make it a non-viable solution for me.
At least 4 times, the department manager did not exactly say I was stupid, but she did keep repeating that I was misinformed, and that unless I called Tech Support I really had no idea.
The reason for return was listed as "Customer did not like it" - which could not be further from the truth.
B&N feels that the modder community is no more than 3 percent of sales, and no risk to alienating them, but my fear is that the influence on sales is far more than 3 percent.
We will see how it goes after the technical web sites pick this up.
Side note - if you do return one, take a printed copy of the B&N return policy with you. I was told my unit was past the return date - but I had a policy copy with me. They grumbled a bit.

Please!!!! tell me where you found a link to the return policy that is good till Jan 31st. I went to the B&N site and they only state 14 days. I don't want to drive almost two hours to the store and have them tell me it's only 14 days. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I have 7 days left and my NT is going back. This has convinced me to get a SGT7. Another $50-100 and I can have a real tablet without all the aggravation.

yeah i am thinking about doing the same thing. will probably return after xmas, i know it will be crazy then but ... just need a little more time to decide.

Mine is going back as well. The one thing I don't want is to be trapped in the B&N environment ever. This was my first tablet, and it made me realize what I DO want in a tablet so I pulled the trigger on an Iconia A500 last night. Yes it is a giant fat pig compared to the NT, but it has full honeycomb, Bluetooth, GPS, and a full size USB (host) port. I really love the size and hardware specs of the NT, but I do not have the energy to battle B&N . I also retracted my recommendations to my friends, as they are less techie than I am, and would just be disappointed. Who knows, maybe I'll pick up another one day

The nook tab is great the way it is (pre-update). I played with my wifes while setting it up before wrapping it up for xmas. Being able to sideload apps and get the amazon market to get the same apps cheaper or free was amazing. My only gripe at the time was the lack of a copy/paste function. why in the world, they won't let you copy/paste to share an web address is beyond me...
If I'm not able to get this thing rooted and stop the OTA update, I might take it back and get her the kindle fire or a used nook color...

This update is the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I had just been debating to myself if I should take this back and get the HTC evo view. But now the choice is pretty clear. I'll be taking my NT back tomorrow morning. At least htc is pretty open about unlocking bootloaders to spur development. About to pull the trigger on an evo view for $239 on ebay, come join me brothers.

You could get a really nice tab if you returned both and used that money...

Well I just returned my Nook, I absolutely loved the device, but I did not feel like fighting the uphill battle and never knowing if an OTA update would stop me in my tracks.

While I am not happy that BN is locking the Tablet down, I do have complete faith in the awesome developers here on XDA.. I am sure they will crack it in no time flat...
For that reason I am keeping mine.. People are seriously over reacting to this... Manufacturers do it all the time and it is cracked all the time...

there's also no reason to think that they WILL keep on this way. wow some people are so negative.
i have one, it's rooted, and according to this site, all automatic updates are blocked by the rooting method. I'm not sure why everyone is throwing a fit, it's not like BN is the first company to patch an exploit in an update or to have a locked bootloader.

Don't waste your time complaining on B&N facebook page...

They are censoring and pruning criticism. They deleted my post that outlined several disappointments. The post was not inflammatory or insulting at all. It just outlined issues I had with the device, and why I was disappointed with the purchase.
I touched on locked bootloader, 1GB restriction, and not being able to sideload apps via the SD card.
I know they are entitled to censor their page, but that's really disappointing.
No surprises there. It's all about corporate image and they are fighting against Amazon right now.
We could make our own Facebook page to voice our disappointments. They couldn't delete that. Just a thought.

I totally would if I still had a vested interest in this product. I decided to take mine back and grab the Galaxy Tab 7 plus, and not because of the locked boot loader or issues with it. TBH, I have total confidence that it will get rooted and there will be development, it just takes time. Personally it's been their support and attitude that turned me off. The BN support told me to take it to the store and I could get it partitioned, drove all the way there (which is about 30 min away), and everyone there had no idea what I was talking about. One semi-knowledgeable person said I could only repartition if it was a NC.
That kinda stuff really bothers me. I'd rather spend the extra $, at least I know what I'm getting with a Samsung product.

I know. I was talking about the NT getting rooted eventually.
One thing that annoys me is that after the Color was rooted, B&N marketing made a huge deal about it being a tablet. Not that they mentioned rooting, but they did ride the tablet buzz. And how did they thank the community that made that possible?
I've bought lots more Kindle books than Nook books, and I see that trend continuing in spite of it being so much less annoying to have put the Nook app on my Kindle Fire than the Kindle app on my Nook Tablet.
So, I just checked the B&N face book page and there are many posts including mine. Mine specifically got...a little spirited.(some one on the internet thinks i was wrong. REALLY felt the need to inform me of that.)

I got it today at Best Buy. I think it was worth the extra $. The good thing about buying it at BB right now is I have until Jan 24th 2012 to return it. So basically risk free for 2 months. I love their holiday return policy.

Why would you return the nook tablet?

It's already a really good device after you root and sideload apps. I just don't see the point in the reasoning of "WE CANT HAVE CUSTOM ROMS" I mean we're working on it but for the time being, you can make the tablet pretty freakin' great. I worked on mine and now it looks like it's running honeycomb aside from missing a few important settings that B&N so kindly ripped away from the tablet, we have everything working pretty well and to our liking. We will get custom roms but it might not be ICS but who cares? Anything is better than how our tabs came out of the box. I enjoy it and I despise the original firmware and I can honestly say, I now love this device.
If you keep the Nook Tablet, you're telling B&N you're OK with a locked bootloader.
As a consumer, voting with your wallet is the best way to make corporations listen.
While I do agree you should take a stand against a company, threatening to return something isn't the way to go about it. I think there is more formal methods but I'm not saying you're wrong, just wanting true proper justification for the act.

I think you missed the Nook Color and how much fun it was. BN lied outright to me before I bought this device. Most people bought the nook color because they could make it "their own". That will never be possible with a locked bootloader. The NT has great specs, but so does the Droid Bionic and there is 2 developers on it in over 3 months. The kernel sucks so the roms can't improve things much.
I'm just disappointed. I was looking for a dual core, 7-inch tablet that didn't suck. When this came out I thought that it's perfect. I'll just load ICS onto it and it'll be a steal for $259! I guess B&N really ****ed me over this time.
Quite simply: I wouldn't return mine, but then again, I'm not a rebel non-conformist like some people are. I research a device and make sure it fits my needs and is to my liking before I buy it. I'm pretty happy with my little NT.
I don't know where you're getting you "rebel non-conformist" accusation from. Some of us just like the idea of buying cheap hardware and putting a tablet-centric operating system on it. What's wrong with that?
Granted, I should have looked it up sooner and figured out that the bootloader was locked. But that's my fault.
Absolutely nothing wrong with that, sounds great. But there's a saying, I believe it goes: 'You get what you pay for.' ;p I was mostly referring to the bro trying to throw around money to convince people to crack the bootloader or whatever that entails.
The only thing missing that would be supplied by a custom ROM like CM7 is copy/paste, but I suppose I can live without it for now.
I was considering returning the tablet but I've decided to keep it. For my money, it's the best device of it's kind out there and at this point I've tried quite a few. The only reason I was considering returning it is because of the fear that B&N might push out an update that will block the ability to sideload apps. I haven't been successful in my attempts to root the NT yet (still working on it) but now I'm determined to root it, if only to try and block automatic updates. If it wasn't for those updates, I'd happily remain unrooted forever. The ability to sideload apps is more than enough for me and that ability turns a really good tablet into a truly fantastic one.
If B&N closes the loophole, I will still be able to use the NT to read books and comics and watch movies and that will be great. But right now I can do so much more and it would be a shame to lose that ability. And so I continue my attempts to root and then block OTA updates. So far no success, but I'm gonna keep at it. I will do whatever I can do to help the NT remain as fantastic as it has been so far.
I wouldn't return mine. I knew going in the bootloader was locked. Sure, I'd love it if it wasn't, but I'm satisfied with sideloading and rooting. My NT is now pretty much perfect for my needs, and I consider it a steal for the price.
Personally, I'd rather see someone unlock the 11GB or so available internal memory reserved for B&N content. (Or maybe someone's already done that and I missed it, I dunno.) To me it's kind of equivalent to stores locking up RAM in an anti-theft cage - only I've purchased and taken my RAM home, but it's still locked in an anti-theft cage. I can only have it temp-unlocked each time I take it back to the same store and buy data from them.
Rotten idea, and it's the one I do hope B&N takes flak for- they push the Nook's OOB memory advantage hoping few realize their 16GB tablet is really a 1GB tablet for most uses. That's just a minor difference. Yeah, I know it has an SD slot, but I still want my internal 11GB's back as well.

What if we are OK with it? Seems to me that most here are satisfied with it as is. I mean, yes I want CM7 or 9 but to be honest, if it never came I certainly wouldn't regret my purchase.
I've owned a lot of tablets and this by far has been the best experience. I even quit buying Kindle books and started buying nook books to support B and N further.
My main reason for supporting them however is that I don't want the last book store I can visit to go under. If that means no CM then so be it.

I had read about the locked bootloader before buying. I did wait until it was rooted and google market was available. I was watching the rooting thread as it was happening and bought it the next morning.
Pretty happy with my current NT setup right now, with all the apps I had when I had the NC. Only difference is that everything runs so much faster and smoother.
The thing I'm not happy with is the 1GB limit. To have almost 12 GB's sitting there that I have so little access to is beyond ridiculous.

Keeping or not keeping the Nook Tablet is a personal choice for each person. There are arguments on each side and having people fighting over them in a thread is just asking for the flaming and stuff to start here to like it is on the rezound forums lol.
I respect a person's choice to keep their tablet, and they should respect my decision to return it if the bootloader isn't unlocked.
As of right now I feel mine was well worth the $250. It does almost everything you could want a Android device to do. The battery life is fantastic too. Also I fell the size is perfect too.
To all the people who want to *****, go over to the Barnes and noble forums and ***** if your going to, you have a much better chance of being heard. All your going to do here is piss off Devs and the other users.

Considering this isn't the dev section (notice the "Nook Tablet General") section at the top this is EXACTLY the correct spot to complain. If you don't want to see upset people who were lied to complain then don't read the thread that is obviously (from the name "Why would you return the nook tablet") going to contain EXACTLY what you want to avoid.

Of course you're satisfied. You have a new toy, and right now you're either enjoying features you haven't had before, or are enjoying features you /have/ had before, but on a faster device or new screen size.
Being satisfied now does not equal being satisfied later though. Eventually you will wish you could upgrade your OS without having to buy new hardware, but that may not be possible.
More importantly though, sending the message to OEMs that we accept the restrictions they impose buy buying locked down devices only motivates them to do it again with future devices.
I'm voting with my wallet.
Thing is, if the bootloader was unlocked, I'd buy instantly, and most likely use the device stock for quite a while before installing any ROMs. That would at least allow a chance for me to try out the B&N book store service. By not buying, no chance. Hopefully they consider this and provide a solution.

I thought it was discovered that rooting the device gave you access to this?

Despite the Herculean efforts of the developers to bring the NT up to the standards of a real Android tablet, I grew frustrated by the amount of time and effort I had to spend tweaking and coaxing mine just to get it to work reliably. After a post on the Barnes and Noble forums from a B&N person who essentially said the official position was not going to change and that securing the Nooks is the company position from here forward, I decided I did not want to forever swim upstream.
I returned the NT and bought a Galaxy Tab 7 Plus. For my extra $100, I get the two cameras, Bluetooth, built-in intelligent remote, and, most importantly, Android Market and Amazon, with no threat of it being hobbled. Its UI is really nice; I feel no need to root it. It's fast and has a great screen.

Its funny to me on the forum at B&N the way people complain, B&N is a corporation, very rarely do they listen to their consumers. I think its funny that people think their voice will be heard and a difference will be made. It takes a much larger group then the one behind the nooks to get results. Which is why the XDA forum is awesome, because we are all behind this device and we all care and can make a difference.

I just returned mine. Didn't get the BN club membership back but that's a small price for the learning experience. I now have a better idea of what I want in a tablet and that's definitely not the closed garden approach that BN has taken.

I paid $268.30 including tax at my local B&N for my NT.
The Gtab 7+ is $349 w/free shipping & no tax.
The difference for me will only be $80.70
I will get Honeycomb out of the box w/ICS scheduled to come out in a few months.
And I'm assuming more apps will be available in the Android Market as this tablet has been "Blessed" by Google to have the Market officially installed.
Don't forget the option of HDMI-out w/dongle.
And garyd9 over in the +'s forum is doing some great things developing for that platform as well.
Very hard to pass this up. The only thing holding me back is that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7+ is not able to connect to ad-hoc networks as of yet. So this means that I couldn't tether and that is also unacceptable. But as soon as this is overcome, I may make the jump. A decision will be made by 01/31!
I made the jump and I'm loving it. I wish all the owners and devs of the Nook Tab the best of luck now and in the future. I didn't need the drama and stress that came preloaded on the Nook Tab.
I'm on the verge of doing the same as well. Does anyone know if B&N counts the purchase date as the date they deliver or the preorder date? If it is the latter, I am out of luck.

The store never even looked at the date on my receipt. I suspect, until January 31, all returns will be accepted.
I can't do this anymore... I need a real tablet
So, I've decided finally that although a lot of forward progress has been made on hacking the Nook Tablet, I simply cannot justify continuing to own one, when I could trade it in and get an Iconia A100 for like... $10 more.
So, unless I miraculously receive enough donations to go out and get a real tablet that won't make me want to gouge my eyes out every other day from frustration, and sheer disgust at the moral quality of the manufacturer, I just cannot justify keeping my Nook Tablet.
I hope everyone the best of luck, and I'm sure we'll have custom ROMs running on the Nook Tablet before too long, and everything will be hunky dory, and life will be awesome... I'm simply unwilling to beat my head against the wall over the bull**** from Barnes and Noble...
This also means that snowball-mod will be finalized at snowball-mod v2.1.1, and I won't be able to offer much in the way of real support for it anymore... of course, I can naturally still answer a ton of questions and such, but without a Nook Tablet myself, there is kind of little testing or anything that I could do to help keep the updates coming, etc.
Maybe if the donations trickle in, and I finally get enough to repurchase a Nook Tablet, I might do that as well... who knows. What I am certain of however, is that I cannot keep my Nook Tablet as is, when for $10 more I can get a tablet that isn't going to treat me like a child who cannot make security decisions for myself. I'm a grown woman, and I can look after myself, thank you very much, Barnes & Noble...
Frankly I think the nook tablet is not for the weak hearted. It's a great device but it requires a lot of maintenance and care to make it work as well as it can. While it's a pity that we must work to stay ahead of B&N's attempts to cripple their own product, I think many would agree that the end result is worth the time and work. I've used quite a few tabs at this point and so far the NT (after being modded) is still the best of the bunch, far and away. It's the fastest, most responsive tab out there, for my money. And the battery life is the best I've ever seen. It far outlasts the iconia, which got about 4 to 5 hours at best, for me anyhow. It's not a perfect tablet and I really resent B&N's insane desire to keep it as locked down as possible, but quite frankly, it does seem like the best tab on the market at the moment. And that's why I'm keeping mine. I need the best product, not necessarily the easiest. I do wish the NT was easier to maintain, but the trade off of having a really awesome tab is worth it to me. Plus now that we've found a way to block OTA's, I'm finally done worrying about the state of my NT and I can focus on enjoying it.
So yeah, I'm keeping my nook tablet. The only thing that could make me reconsider is the Archos 70B IT, which is releasing soon and which has impressive specs and a 200 dollar price point. But no one's actually seen or used one yet, so there's no word on performance and more importantly, on battery life. I'm guessing those details will trickle out in the next couple weeks, or possibly when the device debuts at the CES next week. If its the powerhouse it's marketed as, I may consider it. If not, it's Nook Tablet for me, all the way.
So best of luck to all those who jumped ship. Hope you find what you're seeking in other tablets. But me, I'm planning to remain on board the Nook Tablet ship. The rewards seem to far outweigh the work.
You raise very good points, and it's why it has been such a struggle for me to choose for so long. There is absolutely NOTHING WRONG with this tablet. It is wonderful, it is responsive, it is simply an incredible tablet.
However, I simply cannot abide the moral quality of the company making it. They disgust me, and I simply have no desire to do business with them. That is how upset I am with them, that it would override my darling appreciation of their product.

It boils down to "this denies the user's self-determination, and ability to make informed choices". We're adults, not children. B&N is in no moral place to lock us up for our own good... they are moral in locking us up, because that is their business choice to make money, but presenting the argument that it is for our own good, switches the field from the moral "we want your money", to the immoral "you have no right to choose".

who's returning their nook before jan 31?

Nooks purchased between Nov. 14, 2011 and Dec. 31, 2011, may be returned through Jan. 31, 2012.
after 1.41 blocking sideloading and my pc's not playing nice with my Ntablet, And Google announcing their own tablet at a competitive price, im almost positive I'm going to return this nook and wait. I was starting to love it with the sideloading but now I see B$N's app store and stand on sideloading....im really annoyed.
Im about to bring this thing back.
I'm seriously considering it. I love the hardware, but not sure I want to hassle with the software. Cfoesch taking hers back has really made me stop and reconsider.
Not that I don't think Adam et al aren't doing great work, and I think they'll eventually get great things running on it, I'm just starting to think that I don't want to bother with it.

I gave it a lot of thought, and actually returned mine back in December. IMO, it was bad enough that the bootloader was locked. Then they started pushing out updates to plug the sideloading hole.
And ok, there were ways around it, but to me, it was principal. Who the **** is B&N to tell me how to use a device that I spent $250 on? and that's precisely why I returned it. there's no better way to express one's disatisfaction with a company then to hit their bottom line.
its still a nice device, but I just didn't want to support them any longer given their new business model with this device.

I agree. I really think that they are breaking the law by sending updates without the OWNERS approval.

eh, there could be some language in the EULA saying that it's ok.
my problem is that they claim the hacking community is less than 3% of their total sales, and that's totally probable. However, if it's so small, why piss off that additional 3%? It's only going to contribute to total sales, granted that 3% isn't going to shop the B&N "store".
I understand their logic/rationale, but in the end, it's giving people a sour taste, and people are taking to boards, etc to complain. Anyone who hits up a google search about the Nook Tablet can see all the *****ing about the locked bootloader, and sideloading being plugged. Joe-Nobody may not even understand what any of that means, but just might not like seeing all the negative comments.
In the end, I won't give them my money. And that's all you can do, really. They're gonna get pushed out of the market by more powerful, actual, tablets, for marginally more money.
On the other hand, B&N are fighting the good fight against Microsoft against patent/licensing nonsense, so I like that. I'm hoping there's a way to get ICS eventually, but this is still a great device with 1.4.0, OTAs blocked, root, custom launcher, Market access, etc. This will tide me over for at least a few years.
Rooted and Loving It
I am thoroughly enjoying my NT. I got it in November, rooted it, had it unroot itself with the 1.4.1 update (urgggg), and used Indirect's method and other links to restore to 1.4.0, reroot, and block OTAs. My husband urged me to give up on the restore and reroot at one point, as it looked like I was going to blow a gasket or something. But I persevered.
Although I understand the sentiment that returning the device sends a message to B&N, I want to send a different kind of message.... I will do with this device as I choose. Although we (the 'rooters') are a small percentage of NT owners, we can be vocal and rather obstinate. I like to think that B&N may win a few battles, but they will lose the war.

unless B&N decides to release an unlock tool, I'm doubtful this will be the case. it's just not worth the dev's time to try and crack a bootloader to develop for it when there are so many other devices (with more on the way) that are already unlocked.
This is not my only tablet, and although my first go around with Android, this device serves my purpose (mostly a reader). I rooted and blocked the updates, so the only "real" issue is updating it with presumably better/more stable updates in the future without hosing it. 1.4.1 hasn't really received a lot of "Wow" feedback, so it was a maintenance update. Likely, we won't see much in the way up grand updates. B&N, if anything, will likely release a whole new device for any major updates.
Does it have issues? Yeah sure, what platform doesn't? But all in all, a reboot here and there is not so much of a problem. Will I keep it forever, not likely, that's what eBay is for.
I like what it does, I love the form factor and industrial design.It's a fun gadget.
Now that OTAs have been blocked, I see no real need to return the tablet. It does everything I want it to do and does it quite well. I have no idea how having ICS would make reading comics and watching movies better on the nook tablet. As such, I have no real need for it and don't care if it ever hits the NT.
Bottom line is that once you root and block OTAs, this is a powerful little tablet that's among the best (if not THE best) in its class. It has some issues but I'd rather deal with those than deal with a slow, glitchy piece of junk tablet that's fully hackable.

Yes the OP post is referring to extended holiday purchases.
I might change my tune if I didn't have the obscenely stubborn driver issues and could root but this whole experience with nook has been frustrating and left a bad taste in my mouth. Even towards their brick and mortar stores.
ONE MAJOR thing I overlooked when deciding was the Nook App store. $3 for something I already have and got for free? FU B$N. I dont even want the nook store on my/your tablet.
I, for one, will be keeping mine. I really like it as is (granted, all the additional work we had to do was ****ty but I've got it how I like it). Overall it's a great device

Why would I do that? I had it rooted and OTA blocked less than an hour after I unboxed it (thanks to the XDA devs!), and it's been wonderful for whatever I want to use it for. Whatever drama comes from B&N is meaningless to me at this point, and if ICS becomes available for it at some point due to the efforts of the XDA community it will be the awesome sugary sweet icing on what is already a pretty tasty cake.
I wont be returning mine either. As much as id like to 'stick it' to b&n, I really am enjoying it with the snowball mod installed. Like another user said, idk how ICS will improve my comics/kindle/tversity watching and reading, but im happy with it now as is. This isn't to say id want the devs to stop working on it, improvements are always welcome, and im thankful for the work they've put into it thus far.
After snowball-mod came out I decided to keep my NT since it essentially strips it of most if not all of B&N content. Since OTA updates are basically blocked for now, I see no reason to return it because it does have pretty good hardware specs for its price range. Maybe CES 2012 will change my mind, but I highly doubt it because most stuff from CES are high cost... which in my mind is a no no... sticking with my NT until something better comes that is in a similar price range
I'm on the fence leaning towards keeping it. I agree with most of you saying that working on this device is a pain not to mention the constant reloading and rebooting the windows driver. But with all that said I'm still winning!

Running GO launcher
Every google app possible
Got rid of everything B&N
Changed my status bar from B&N to ICS9 (hated that lil book)
And changed the n button to a back button, no need for button savior
Basically the only reminder that I have that's it's an NT is the boot screen, and I'm working on changing that.
I'm off the mind that I've done all this work so far, I might as well keep it. For all tencent purposes it looks and runs like Android 3.0.
I have faith that the NT will be hacked and have ICS9 someday, but until then I'm satisfied. And even if it doesn't get hacked I'm still able to run and install the same apps as someone with ICS9.

Engadget just posted an article of ASUS teasing a 7" Tegra 3 ICS tablet that will be $249. I'm keeping mine as I bought it for my son (and I steal it from him all the time), but I would definitely buy the ASUS over the Nook Tablet at this point depending on it's release date.

I was browsing around change.org today and I came across this. A petition to recall the prime and give users a full refund or an upgrade path to the 700. Not sure why no one but the person who started it signed it. I know if you ***** enough asus will refund your $ so maybe that's why the poster didnt pursue the petition?

actually, there was one created with exact same theme a long time ago. it never really gained any traction as the path to upgrade wasn't realistic from a business point of view. I'm not sure if the one you have linked to is the same one. But I've seen a petition just like that made several months ago. I think when we all first heard of the Infinity Pad. Made alot of people mad..lol

yeah I doubt anything will come from it, Just was wondering if anyone else came across it.
But I do know they are offering really unhappy users refunds (my friend was told by gary he could get a full refund for the tablet and dock)
My way of looking at that is this:
If they refund everyone who is extremely unhappy they have to refund them for the full retail price of the tablet and the dock(and I'm guessing tax?). So they have to dish out the retail price of it when we all know it cost them a fraction of that amount to produce them. I honestly think from a business stand point and upgrade path would be better because then they would only have to replace the tablet(assuming the docks are compatible) which is much cheaper for them then refunding the full retail purchase amount. Even if they didnt upgrade the tablet to the 700 and just replaced the backplate on the prime and maybe the wifi/bt and gps modules it would also be cheaper for them than having to refund the purchase price.
And just let me say again.. I was just asking if anyone has seen it or heard of the one I linked. Not trying to promote, have it gain momentum or start a WW3. Just simply wanted to know if anyone else stumbled on it like I have.

You bought a consumer product. If you don't like it or it doesn't meet your expectations, return it to where you got it within the return period.
I have never seen a return period that is less than 14 days, and if it takes you more than two weeks to realize that the product doesn't meet your expectations, there is something obviously wrong with you.
If you waited months for an update to be released in order to make the device meet your expectations, I am sorry but you are a fool. You should always buy a device for what that device is NOW, not for what is may become in the future.
In any event, if you want an "upgrade path" here it is:
Sell the Prime on eBay. If you have taken good care of your device you should get at least $400 for it. Use that $400 to help pay for the Transformer Infinity.

I think you need to read my post again.. did I say anything about being unhappy? No.. Did I say I wanted an upgrade? No. All I did was ask if anyone came across it... gessh..
I even signed it with this comment:

And I do feel the device wasnt ready for prime time. I'm pretty happy with mine. the only issue I really have is the screen bleeding and that's not even that bad and since I have squaretrade I'm thinking of popping it open and fixing that myself.
Hell I was outside yesterday and tried gps for the first time on this unit without the dongle and I got a 12/13 sat lock. Today I tried and I got 8/9. I was pretty surprised by that

ok fair enough..lol But the fact that asus is offering refunds to people really unhappy says something as well. It says the company knows they kinda screwed up. Because in most cases: yeah, it is your problem and they dont have to offer you a refund at all. Like you said you have at least 14 days(if not longer) to return to the store. But the fact they are offering refunds to people who ***** enough does say something. Some companies no matter how much you put up a stink wont issue you a refund. A replacement? yes, but how often do they offer full refunds?
Asus should offer a upgrade and make Nvidia pick up the tab for the not ready for prime time T3

I think any company that is serious about their customers does the same kind of thing. At least, HTC replaced my malfunctioning EVO 4G no questions asked. Samsung has replaced televisions and refunded me for broken televisions with no problems.
Some companies give you the run around when it comes to this kind of stuff (Looking at you Sony) but for most companies it isn't worth the negative press, especially in this day and age of internet blogging and twitter.

you must be good. haha I've never been offered a refund. Replacements I have been offered but never a full refund. Hell I just dealt with an issue with Dell. They replaced my laptop with a refirb(accidental warranty) and started having issues with it two months later. They sent a tech to fix it, he fixed those issues but didnt send him a preloaded HD just a blank one so I have to load everything myself, and after the repair the keyboard didnt fully work. So they come again to fix that, they fix that then one speaker dies.. It took me filing a BBB complaint to have them contact me to give me a brand new system. No matter how much I *****ed before they just wanted to keep trying to fix it.

Oh and sorry for being a little snippy.. It's hot and humid as hell in NYC today and all the garbage is out for collection tomorrow so you can imagine the streets just smell like roses
Technically, refunds aren't given to just any and everyone who asks for it. you have to meet specific criteria for them to even consider it. Mostly just early adopters or people who bought prime before they removed GPS From their official spec, like beginning or first week of January, are eligible. but even then terms have to be met and not all of them can get it. just wanted to clear that up so everyone don't get their hopes up thinking they can get a refund. there's already several reported cases here in xda of people being denied.
I'm still waiting to hear back on certain info that'll clear up alot of things. I think Asus knows even people who have good working tablets might try to get a refund just because infinity pad right around the corner..lol. so they trying to eliminate refunds that have no real basis for getting one. Chances are very high that if you never sent your tablet in for an RMA, then try to come out the blue wanting a refund, they will deny it. They will just say send it in for RMA.

I was just about to comment on this ... I purchased my Prime on December 24th and after trying to, more or less, put up with horrible WiFi, completely non-functional GPS, and a proposed dongle solution that was not satisfactory, I was able to return my Prime (and dock) to Asus for a full refund. As a matter of fact, I just shipped it in last week, so I am still waiting on the refund, but I don't foresee any issues. The reason they let me return it was due to GPS issues, and probably legal ones on their part since GPS was a feature when i bought, but did not work, was removed from the spec list, and the solution was not satisfactory. I said all that, to say that the petition is not necessary. If you have a legitimate reason for requesting to return you TF201, they will probably work with you. On the other hand, people trying to get a refund just to get an upcoming model just need to learn some patience, and not jump on the first generation of something (ie. tegra 3). With that said, if your reason for requesting a refund has to do with the GPS issue, I was finally able to get someone with the authority to authorize one in what he said was the "Transformer Prime GPS issue department."
