I'm having that gross blot on my 10.1. I called Samsung, they told me to go to Best Buy, and Best Buy told me to get ****ed. So I guess I'm on my own. Is there any way to permanently fix it without sending it in?
Sending in is the only way and some have gotten units back and have it happen again.
Two weeks into ownership of my Verizon LTE version the rings appeared. After reading up on the issue I decided to wait it out. I used pressure points along the edges of the screen to coax the rings away and changed the way I carry the tab and the way I place it in the case (eventually changed cases altogether). I'm now 3.5 months in and the rings aren't an issue for me anymore. I'm careful not to put unnecessary pressure on the screen when I carry and store it and I think this goes a long way towards avoiding the issue entirely.
IMO things like never stacking things on the device, always placing it on flat surfaces face up when not in use and using cases that don't put pressure on the chassis to cause deformation are all good best practices to employ with these devices. When I must carry my tab in a bag I make sure its screen faces a larger flat item like a folder or book but that the tab itself isn't swished between books.
I don't know about US Samsung policy
but in Indonesia .. in earlier period, I manage to have my tab replaced new and since then the watermark/NR problem have never appeared anymore ..However, recently I heard that the replacement policy has gone into a service screen replace .. either way should fix the problem
I think the screen problem only appear in the early batch or old stock .. because I never heard such problem anymore in my place especially newer batch

Really, even now?
What's the turnover on getting it back? A week or two?
Not to disappoint you, but this is my case... (CompUSA) Got 2 Galaxy Tabs 32GB version last week. One for my wife, one for me.
My wife's tablet came perfect. (no exchanges)
But my tablet... History...
1st tablet: Came with 2 dead pixels right in the middle of he screen.
2nd tablet: Huge Oil Slick / Newtons Ring on 2nd day of use. (was only solved for a few minutes by putting it on the freezer)
3rd tablet: not 2, not 3, but 4 dead pixels...
4th tablet: no dead pixel, no oil slick YET... UPDATE!!! > > > AGAIN!!! SAME ****... OIL SLICK AGAIN!!! 12/26/11... Going to return it again tomorrow. > > > Returned it, got money back... (CompUSA manager even told me that all 10.1 have been returned because of dead pixels or oil slick issue, and he agree to give me a full refund.) I would say that at least 90% of Galaxy Tab 10.1 are defective. If you got one without this issue, consider it an exception and consider yourself lucky. This is the end for me with the 10.1 Tab, will never recommend it. Yet another update... My wife's tablet also got oil slick on day 15... Returned it too... Money back too... The end...
All tablets were: P7510 UEKF3
Install Dead Pixel Test from the market to check for dead pixels.
That's why I hate BestBuy... I buy all my electronics at Costco or CompUSA.
> > > Last edit (12/31/2011) ... Went to AT&T and got the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE... Finally Happy...
quick fix

Not sure if people are still dealing with this, but I have found that 5 minutes in a refrigerator fixes the issue. And then being careful not to set stuff on it and not applying too much pressure to the middle helps keep it away. i got my slick 3 months ago and it came back once since, but another trip to the fridge and all is well.

This is my second G Tablet from Woot.
The first came with a bad pixel that I was intending to live with and try to correct. It went from one bad pixel to a whole line of green pixels across the screen and without rooting and flashing a different rom to get a program that actually would load on the G Tablet I gave up and RMA'd it. Pretty amazing service, shipped mine before the return arrived and no shipping either way.
Now my second G Tablet. Plugged it in and charged until the green light came on and booted it, anxious to get all of my apps reloaded. Immediately noticed that there is an outline about half an inch in from the screen edges all the way around the screen, it looks like a puddle on the screen and a lot like burn in on my Plasma TV. I honestly don't want to roll the dice again and get a new one, but I don't know if I should be concerned about the longevity of the product being less with this issue. Most apps you can't see it and it doesn't bother me, I just don't want to have it die on me a few months down the road and not have the option to return it.
I hope there isn't another thread about this specific screen issue, I couldn't find it and any advice would be great.
Try 'Pixel Fixer' from Market.
Also: LCD burn-in, image persistence fixed!
Are you sure thats not the dual layer screen protector that was shipped on earlier units ? perhaps woot got a punch of old stock.
Also might be some trapped humidity from transit (moving between indoor/outdoors) I would run it on highest brightness for a couple of days if that doesn't fix it I would exchange.
Not sure if it is the dual layer screen protector or not.
Being that it is a G-Tablet we don't have access to the true android market without rooting and running a different ROM, which I haven't decided against, but if I am going to be RMAing it i don't want to hack it and take a chance they refuse to replace it. It isn't bothersome, just more concerned about it effecting the longevity of the tab.
Thanks for the replies.
just download the apk of google.
if the tab is still covered by the manufacture warranty then make them fix it. if they cant fix it they will replace it for you then.
Hi guys,
New thing, i notice this on both i9100 phones (the one i sended back and the new one from today). There are like to almost same dimension parallel stains/distortions(?) on the bottom half of the screen and you can notice them only if is dark/semi-dark in the room and your phone is in front of a monitor/hdtv with a withe screen, in other conditions they can't be notice and from what i can tell they don't alter the image in any way. I will post a image from the first phone (the second one is almost the same) if you guys notice them or not, or you have a theory, please post.
Thanks.
Looks to me like a small manufacturing mark or defect in the polarising filter on the screen. I wouldn't be concerned with this, i doubt you'll ever get an LCD that doesn't have something like this.
the reason it is only showing up in front of a TV or screen is because the light coming off it is polarised. normally this shouldn't be visible, so the manufacturers aren't concerned
Somebody please correct me if i am wrong
No, i'm not concerned. I think is probably from the machine that holds the glass during production or assembly (because there are two i9100 with the same shape of the stains). I just wandered if other owners of i9100 notice the same thing with their phones, but from what i see nobody bothers...oh well, thanks anyway.
Well my phone doesn't have that. And phones I've had before haven't had that. If it doesn't bother you then that's fine...personally I'd be and would get a replacement.
These phones should be *perfect*

Ok sir, i will play this game, lets talk facts:
- This is my second phone after returning the first phone with the same problem and some package issue.
- The two phones come from the same online retailer but diffident distributors, this means is bigger than a batch problem.
- The problem is almost identical (two stains same shape), but visible only in one condition (mentioned above) and only from a very wide angle (btw if you tilt the phone in that light and angle the stains change color from darker to lighter).
- It doesn't affect in any way, shape or form the generated image, it can only be seen with the lcd off and in a fluorescent light.
- If you return for the second time the device, you have to wait for betwin 2-10 days (again) for the service department to come with a resolve and you risk to get a money back resolve, witch mean from 4-14 days to transfer your money in your bank account and after you start from the beginning with another retailer (all retailers have the same distributors).
With all above taken into account, honestly, what would you do?
*Hellover, let's play a game*

I think you're very unlucky to get a replacement with the same problem. Like I said, mine has an absolutely perfect screen, and given the fact this is an expensive flagship handset, everybody should have a perfect screen. Even on cheap phones I've never seen the poor screen QC that I've seen on the GS2, it's a shame. But NEVER accept anything less than flawless. Imagine the blob gets bigger and distorts the image somehow? You will be angry!
Personally, it would be hassle waiting for a replacement or a refund etc, but I'd much rather have my money back or a flawless phone, than hold on to a clearly flawed one. It's bothered you enough to post up on XDA about it. Seriously man, just return it. Maybe get a cheap phone and wait til the Nexus Prime comes out...

GOD Damm it...man! Now i have to w8 for the "money back guarantee!!!"... i send it back because of YOU!....no man, thanks, you are right, i will settle for one with flawless everything. I attached a picture with the old one and the ex new one side by side.
I will change the retailer. lets hope third is a charm...
Later.
Well, third device, second retailer, same defect. I'm done, i didn't try the withe version but then again i don't like withe, so i will keep this one.
That sucks man. You could upgrade to galaxy nexus soon though!
Hi,
Ive read about the oil slick online and I started to get worried about the tab 10.1 I asked for Christmas. On Christmas day, My tab was fine until 2 hours. I noticed when I pressed on the screen, I saw oil spreding across it but when i took my finger of it went away. I have orderd a repair envelope and I have got a repair number from Samsung. Do I need to send it?

I'm sorry about your tab, dude. I've noticed that this problem is in tabs, mostly from outside the U.S.
I'm not sure about their policy, you might want to read up.

Just send it in before your warranty is over. It only takes a few days to a week; choose a time when you're not going to miss it anyways.

Thanks very much for the advice!
I had an older Wi-Fi and now have a newer 3G. The 3G was built in October and came with a new screen design. It seems more rigid and has a subtle texture under the glass. The old Wi-Fi would do the same thing you described, but only when I pressed the glass in to the panel. It never had Newton Rings. While yours may never develop them, it might not be a bad idea to send it in anyway. It'll come back with the newer design screen.
If it happens with a light touch definitely send it back. Funny though, when I first took mine out of the box, there was a big fat one on the screen that slowly disappeared after the pressure got taken away and I haven't gotten them since. I think the question is whether or not it goes away when they've been squeezed too hard.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Just got mine dec 30th and a november 2011 build date and has this rite out of box! And gets huge when tab in use. Sending it back!
Oye. First post at XDA. I bought the TP at Canada Computers on December 23rd. They give two weeks for return, so I have until Friday to return or exchange this thing. If you were me, would you return this tablet? Here are my issues:
- gps will briefly lock outdoors, but loses the lock quickly after subtle movements
- hdmi output has issues with my Sony Bravia TV - only plays through left channel (using dice player and games like riptide)
- one white (dead) pixel near bottom right corner
- very slight white bleed on bottom right with black screen
What do you think? Maybe others are grappling with the same question.
Cheers,
lukin

the 1 single dead pixel did it for me
helllll yes
Yes, return it. The GPS issue is here to stay though. (Design flaw)

Pixel did it for me. I am on the fence about the hdmi. I think that will happen with all of them until a fix is issued. But i would return it for the pixel.
If it is white it isn't dead though is it? I think it may be stuck. Have you tried massaging it or tapping it? I know it sounds weird but have you tried? Like with your finger or pencil eraser with a micro fiber cloth or some other material between so as not to scratch the screen. There are a few tricks if you Google it.
yeah I think the HDMI thing will just need firmware updates to fix, so hopefully will get sorted out. the pixel though is over the line, get a replacement.
Just preordered it...Hoping they come in this week. Been kicking the TF101/no TF201 around? and the Iconia A500. My wife pre ordered the prime while i was out so....I'm waiting in cyberline. Can't wait. Any other issues you guys finding?
If anything relate to screen, i would return or exchange right away, hard to ignore if you look at it every day....
Simple answer: Exchange it.
Why? If you're unhappy now, imagine how you'll feel once your small time window closes and you are still unhappy!!
Good god man, do it while y'ee have the chance!!
Yep, I'd return it for the pixel.
Single stuck pixel huh? I have one stuck red and thought that best buy would not take it back. If its a reasonable expectation that no pixels be dead or stuck then perhaps I will exchange it (if best buy lets me).
Thanks for the feedback. I am going try the screen massage, maybe break out the sexy time oils. If no luck, it goes back and I join the replacement line. It is is our first tablet and I wanted to get the best product. The bugs are testing my patience a bit. I bet it come with the territory when buying a brand new product.
Thanks.

So you say BB Woudn't take it back within their 14-days return policy?
I am not sure, I am going to send mine back to Amazon for a refund once more become in stock. Then I will re order it, hopefully with not stuck pixel. I am trying different pixel fixers/unsticking tools from the app market. Hopefully they will do the trick, as there is little wrong with it now. I did the battery drain thing to fix the messed up touch screen (never was bricked, just had poor sensitivity in random spots).

I didnt try because I thought you needed a few dead pixels to warrant return. I dont really know anything about Best Buy, I have never bought from them before.
I guess I will try to exchange it.

They will take it back for any reason, even buyer's remorse, for 14 days. 45 days if you are a silver reward member.

Same here. I had a monitor I kept with a dead pixel and I regretted not returning it for 3 years. Thing bugged me to death, but at the time I didn't want to go 3 weeks without a monitor to return it. I say at least try to exchange it as you should never have to put up with a dead pixel.
The HDMI and GPS probably will continue. The GPS issue is known and the HDMI is probably a handshaking issue with the DRM. A lot of devices can have these issues whether its your TV's problem or the Prime would not be known. DRM should never be included in cabling which is why I hate HDMI.

I guess I was mostly thinking that getting one stuck pixel is normal and getting no stuck pixels was an unrealistic expectation.
Looks like I was wrong, so I will exchange and hopefully get one without a stuck pixel.

I have 2 stuck pixels that I only see on a black background when looking real hard for it. I have never seen them any other way, so I dont plan on sending it back to newegg. If I had bought it locally and could get another to try before I had to return it, then I might feel different. The fact they are still difficult to get, and how hard it is for me to see it, I will keep it.
Here's an update on my headache about whether or not to return my TP. This will also discuss the GPS issue, so others might be interested.
I spoke to customer service today about the issue discussed above. This is their response to each:
1) GPS. They told me to download the firmware update and that would fix the issue. After updating there had been some improvement, but not enough. Basically the blue arrow in google maps bounced around my current location around 30 meters from where I am. For example, up the street, one street over, down the street, and even 10 kms away on the other end of the city. It never stayed fixed on my actual address.
At that point the supervisor suggested that it be sent to ASUS for repairs. This is where we got into a over the top semantic conversation. First of all, they wouldn't acknowledge that there has been problems with GPS for others or that they had posted any public response to the issues. Weird. They wouldn't acknowledge the aluminum case issue.
I told them I have two days left to return to the store and I want a guarantee that it will come back to me with GPS fixed. They said that any product that goes to the service centre will come back fixed. However, they don't know that the fix will be "up to the customers standard" for GPS. I said, okay, what is a reasonable standard for GPS functionality? That it can lock onto a couple satellites and not bounce around the screen like a pinball. He agreed this would be what he wanted from a GPS, but would not say that for certain this would be the end result of the recalibration. Then he began to talk about "environmental factors" that could impact the signal. I said, we've got blue sky and sun today, will it work on a day like today? He wouldn't guarantee that either.
2) HDMI output issue. He said it would be reported to quality control and that it may be fixed with a future update. No guarantee either.
3) Stuck white pixel. This issue seems to have gone away (awesome), but he said it would be fixed if sent for repairs.
I called Canada Computers to ask for some kind of an extension to their 14 day return policy, to have time to see what the repair does for GPS. They shot that down pretty quick. If I keep it past 14 days, there can be no return. They said I could return it and wait for another one, but there is no current stock or promise of when the next shipment arrives.
Two more questions for the forum to chew on:
1) Has anyone reported a fully functional GPS on this device. That they can drive in their car and the satellite remains locked? I have only seen videos that show it doesn't work - like the bloke who kept on calling it rubbish. If there are working GPS out there, then I'm more likely to roll the dice with the repair.
2) Will the Sony TV issue get fixed? I have read people that say it's a software issue and correctable; whereas others talked about DRM and that a fix isn't possible. I didn't actually understand the DRM piece entirely.
3) What quad core android tablets do we expect over the next couple months that will challenge the TP for top dog status? Maybe I can return and wait.
Thanks for reading.
This was the tablet my family got me for my birthday. For January. I preordered and received it sometime after.
It worked fine, then few trouble everyone had showed up; I thought I'd be fine.
I forgave it when it had Bluetooth problem and GPS signal problem.
Then Wi-Fi gets lost, I have screen bleeding on top; I'm fine with that.
Green camera I got it too, then my tablet reads and writes so slow I sat 30 minutes one time waiting for my Winamp (or any music player for that matter) to boot... It was still usable.
Now USB connector won't read (I tried plugging to 3 different PC; no success. They used to work before) and now it refuses to update to JellyBean. It refuses to read my MicroSD card also now.
Sure I rooted, and certainly I dropped it once. If dropping it once from waist height causes all this problem (I had green camera problem little after), I'm gonna have to say I can't swallow my pride anymore.
I'm thinking about returning this thing to Amazon and ask for full refund at this point. I don't want to be stuck with RMA hell most people faced and I want something that just works.
Now, I also have ACH on this... I also read some people were able to get full ACH refund for this; is this true?
I also have a cover and Skinomi on this; have anyone tried returning accessories also? How did that go?
...overall, only question I have is this.
Did I wait too long on return?
On phone with Amazon right now...
First they told me they had option to replace my tablet with new one.
I was okay with that, but then they told me they can't do that anymore.
I'm okay with that so I asked for refund. They sent me labels and now I'm working on returning accessories.
They are currently transferring me to 3rd Party Specialist so I can return the accessories also.
(Attempting to return the case, AHD Insurance, and the Skinomi)
Only thing I would feel bad for I guess is the screen protectors. Skinomi is best protector I bought indeed...
It still looks good through all the possible wear and tear I put through;
Regular GNexus screen protector I bought with Verizon fell apart once and I had to replace it;
Phone is younger then the tablet to make matters worse lol
I'll keep you guys posted but this made me realize few things:
1. I need to buy more from Amazon (lol)
2. Skinomi is definitely worth the money
3. I don't know if I can trust Asus anymore after Prime failed on me this hard.
