So I know that there is a chip set I believe the Qualcomm msm8960 that supports all lte bands but does the chip in the photon sport lte? also does anybody know if any phone has the msm8960 chipset in it on sprint currently? Just looking for everybodys thoughts on the news today.

Well - my thoughts on it. By the time that LTE is rolled out on Sprint, most of us if not all of us will be on a new phone. So it really doesn't matter if this phone supports it or not.

I have heard otherwise but still cannot get a straight answer... we are talking about LightSquared 4G LTE, and I spoke to nearly 10 Sprint/Motorola reps and they all say yes, but then I here no. We are not talking about Verizon LTE.

Verizon is also slathered all over the framwork files. Phone still doesn't run on their network.
It could be possible depending on what frequencies were rolled out that you could pick up and authenticate to them. Though we have a SIM card slot LTE standard does not Require a SIM card. I have a feeling though it would never happen.
Like I said in my above post I highly doubt any of us will actually have this phone once LTE is available.
All of it really depends on what Sprint does and how they handle their particular implementation.
Look at this and give your opinion...
09/20/2011
BUFFALO, NY — Verizon Wireless announced today it will launch its 4G LTE high-speed data network in the Buffalo/Niagara area on October 20. Residents, businesses and visitors to the area will be able to use their 4G LTE smartphones, tablets, notebooks, laptop modems and hotspots to take advantage of speeds up to 10 times faster than the company’s 3G network. At launch, 4G LTE will be available from the Hamburg and Orchard Park areas in the south to the Niagara Falls and eastern Grand Island areas in the north and east toward the Clarence, Cheektowaga and Depew areas. This deployment is part of the company’s nationwide rollout of its super-fast data network, scheduled to be complete by the end of 2013.
“We’re excited to lead the Buffalo/Niagara area into the 4G LTE wireless broadband world, helping residents, businesses, and local government connect faster and more fully with each other and with those outside the area,” said Russ Preite, president of Verizon Wireless’ Upstate New York Region. “Our 4G LTE network is revolutionizing the way people communicate. We know this connectivity will be a key communications and technology enabler for many years to come.”
In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, 4G LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink – perfect for surfing the Web, streaming video, and downloading large files wirelessly.
Verizon Wireless introduced the globe’s first large-scale LTE network on December 5, 2010 and is quickly expanding national coverage, currently offering service in 143 markets covering more than half the U.S. population. The company is on course to cover more than 185 million Americans with 4G LTE by the end of 2011. The service launched in the Rochester and New York City markets in December and recently went live in the Albany, Syracuse and Ithaca areas. When customers travel outside of a 4G LTE coverage area, their 4G devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless’ 3G network, enabling them to stay connected from coast to coast.
As the first wireless company in the world to broadly deploy game-changing 4G LTE technology, Verizon Wireless is committed to building its 4G network with the same performance and reliability for which it has long been recognized. Verizon Wireless’ consistent focus on reliability is based on rigid engineering standards and a disciplined deployment approach year after year. The company’s 700 MHz spectrum gives Verizon Wireless specific advantages with 4G, including a contiguous, nationwide network license.
Visit www.verizonwireless.com/lte for more information about Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network.

I'll believe it when I see it. Honestly - I live so far out in the country ill probably never have 4G service, but we'll see.
There are a lot of rumors flying about with the October 7th meeting.
Not true. There is already a list of supported phones. Lte and Rev b and the photon is not listed. So much for a world phone.

I would like to see this list of lte rev b phones, and for those of you out in the country I bet you get lte coverage soon once light squared is up and running all it takes is a receiver to the tower to enable lte. Plus strange thing about the announcement is that sprint is building the lte network and not out sourcing it like their current network.hopefully that is good news.

thats odd, a google search only brings up one thing about a list.....YOUR POST.
The photon is in FACT evdo Revision B capable with it's qualcomm cdma mdm6600 chip
there is no such list of supported phones anywhere on sprint for lte because no such list exists
the Photon 4g uses a BECEEM chip for its wimax, indications are that this is the beceem bcs 500 chip that is in fact wimax AND lte capable, motorola has been working with this company on just such a chip, while circumstantial at this time, there is a very strong amount of circumstantial evidence that the photon 4g has the beceem bcs 500 chip in it, some sprint reps and some folks at mortorola have stated this as well besides motorolas partnership with beceem and the beceem chip shipped out first quarter of 2011.
please stop posting disinformation
neither evdo rev b or a wimax/lte chip have anything at all to do with the photon being a worldphone

lots of rumors, partnerships, statemens that it does indeed support lte, that the motorola photon 4g has the beceem bcs 500 chip in it, the fcc hardware specs are classified til jan 2 of 2012, rather odd since no other phone has a gag order on its wimax chip, motorola has been working with beceem for two years on just such a chip, beceems first wimax/lte chip shipped out first quarter of 2011, plans for the chip began in early 2010. Photon began production in 2nd quarter of 2011. There is no concrete evidence yet but we do know for a fact the photon has a beceem chip, i suspect the truth comes out in january, one can clearly understand why sprint wouldnt want this info out just yet and I suspect people who make such short statements saying it doesnt have not spent five minutes researching the topic otherwise they wouldnt be soo convinced it doesnt. feel free to google beceem, motorola, beceem bcs 500 chip etc. and connect the dots folks.
only one posting claiming it has the beceem bcs 350 chip and thats all that post says, no support at all of their claims.
mystery, intrigue, classified fcc documents with held from the public, partnership between motorola and beceem, sprint switching to lte, beceem the only maker of a wimax/lte compatible chip who the hell else would they be selling that chip to? verizon? like I said folks......do about twelve hours of research on the topic as I have and see if you come away confident with the statement that the photon does not support lte. and dont forget to hook the photon up to your computer, lte is all over the build files.
Yup! I concur! We're light years away from getting any network improvements...lol

Maybe yes, maybe no. All the screen print shows is that LTE isn't in the current software build.
Could a future software build enable LTE? I don't know.
Why ASUS didn't include 3G into this tablet, nowdays thats like a must thing to do... with that would be perfect tablet!
Samsung, HTC, and Motorola have existing relations with all the Wireless phone services. That may have something to do with Asus being left out. But besides the Xoom and the Apple, are there any other Wireless Tablets available for contract with wireless phone company?

Couldn't they just do an unlocked 3G version without having any connection to wireless companies?
For personal use i don't think i will need 3g much. If/When i do, i have my rooted phone to tether to. So i don't see 3G as that needed a feature. And after following a lot of tech blogs and such it seems a lot of the people commenting are wanting wifi tablets only a lot too. So That could be part of it. Also until they have a shared data plan, cause who wants to pay for 2 data plans, i don't see my self paying for 3g even if it had the radio to do it.
However, for business use i would like one with 3g in it. Since i wouldn't trust people to know how to tether much less have a phone that can tether. So in this case simpler is much better. So for business use i will need to look at a different product which makes me sad. and if the treasurer for our non-profit has her way it will be a ipad ... which makes me very very sad. So a 3G model would have been awesome as well.

Correct me if i am wrong, but 3G isn't like cellular networks right? It has to be someone certain radio signal to work correctly meaning you have to work with that company ( be it at&t t-mobile version or sprint or who ever).
Like why the at&t iphone will work on t-moblie but it doesn't have t-moblies radios so you can't get 3G.
And say they just put AT&T radios in with out asking for whatever ( i don't know if you can do that or if it even matters, but just say they did) if at&T didn't want to support the device they could just block the device and not sell plans to it.
So i don't think it is just as easy as "unlocked 3G"
The dock has a USB port, so just connect a mobile data dongle to it?

Can android interpret the data dongle natively?(like Linux (at least it did on Linux Mint last time i tired)) or will a custom app need to be made for it to work if it works at all? (like windows). it is a interesting idea though. If it doesn't work out of the box (i doubt it but never know) someone should really make an app that will make it work. Since i already have a data dongle thing somewhere. lol

I'm not the best source about this information, so please excuse me if I'm wrong. But I thought that most 3G were on similar frequencies, and therefore it would be easy to make a 3G antenna which could communicate on all of them. The reason why I ask, is that I had a T-Mobile Android phone and brought it to the UK a few months ago, and can use it on any network here (since it's unlocked), and only have to change the network operators (or something like that, I can't exactly recall) info so it connects to the right towers. And it works perfectly fine. If I can do that with a crappy old Android phone, why couldn't it be done with Transformer?
But on the whole, I agree with you. It's so much cheaper to buy a tethering plan for most phones than it would be to give it its own 3G service, that for most people just doing a wireless hotspot with their phone would make more sense. But it's still a legitimate question for some people

I know that Archos uses a dongle that slides into the tablet that is powered by USB, so it's not impossible. But I don't know if it's naively implanted.
And if not, maybe some dev's can port the software from the archos devices to the prime to get a USB dongle to work.
I will personally use a wifi modem, that way it doesn't even use the battery of the tab, and I could share the connexion with whoever I want.
I just put my phone in hotspot mode when I need a connection and Wifi is not available. But in that last 2 years I have only had to do that 3 or 4 times. I don't see any need for 3/4g, and the associated extra costs, in a tablet.
Personally I would never pay extra for a 3g version and then have to pay a monthly fee on top of that. In Canada at least the monthly fee is not that cheap.
I wonder if there are stats on how many of each of the ipad models were sold? The original and ipad2 were both released with a 3g model at launch right? It would be interesting to see how big the 3g market is
Probably just to keep costs down. And I honestly don't view 3G as a must do thing. It'll be a while before people start to see data plans attached to devices as a given. Right now, if I need internet while I'm out and about with my tablet I just set up my phone as a hotspot. It's still a bit rare when I feel the need for internet when I'm not at home (most of the time I'll be reading or watching things already stored) but it came in handy while waiting in line for Black Friday.
as the prime is already available for some, could you please test if a 3G dongle works? my interest is not so much in internet connectivity but using mobile TV which only works via 3G here and not over a wifi connection due to legal requirements..
I heard somewhere that they don't because it's not a very popular market. They are aware most people have data plans on their phones and don't want to spend extra on a separate plan for a tablet. Plus most people will just tether from there phones if they need to connect out of wifi range.
3G would be nice in theory, but I wouldn't be willing to pay for another data subscription when I already have one for my phone.
3G does indeed run on different frequencies. especially in the US, it's a giant clusterfuck of various bands that carriers use as well as completely different technologies for it.
verizon and sprint both use CDMA and different freq
tmobile and at&t both use GSM (like most of europe) at run at different freq. (it's the reason an unlocked iphone will work on tmobile, but you won't get 3g on it.)
for asus to come out with a 3g (or 4g) enabled tablet in the states, it would mean working with some provider to support and sell it, which asus being such a small player would be tough to get any of the big providers to get on board.
one solution would be to install a quad or penta band gsm radio in it (like the galaxy nexus) and let people use it however they want, but then cost comes into play.
personally, i've never seen the draw to 3g enabled tablets, as most people who have one also have a smartphone that they can probably tether to the device.
if i really wanted to get 3g and not tether in some way, i'd probably rather get a hotspot for the same price (service wise) and not use up my tablets battery powering the radio and also be able to connect multiple devices to it.
maybe i shouldn't have replied to this thread but created a new one
what i asked is whether a 3G dongle would work (similar to what archos does), but i guess not
asus could support that and not care about a 3G tablet version, only put the drivers and apps into the firmware.
3G connectivity is cheap in austria, unlimited data plan (without throttle) with 10mbit/s for 15 euros/month (or even much cheaper with throttle), but as i said, i'd only need it for mobile TV.

The U.S. isn't like the rest of the world. With the exception of Asus, all the manufacturers offer both 3G and Wi-Fi versions of their tablets. Some of what's available in the U.S. are adaptations of those. And data plans in a lot of countries aren't as expensive and don't lock you in to two-year contracts making 3G much more popular outside the U.S.
Asus said in the spring they'd launch a 3G version of the TF1. In November, they sent them out to reviewers. It's still not released and may never be. Apparently, Asus isn't big on 3G.

I have a HSPA+ 21 UK tablet that I use on AT&T. It's $20 a month with unlimited data and MMS because it's just another non-smartphone on my account. Tethering is a pain in the ass. Get out the phone, turn on Wi-Fi sharing, connect the tablet, disconnect the tablet, turn off Wi-Fi sharing. If you forget the last thing you're phone's battery is shot. It's shot anyway becasue Wi-Fi sharing's a huge drain. Connecting a tablet after it's been offline's also a pain while you wait for everything to sync before you can start using it. With all the carriers (except Sprint) starting to throttle for excessive usage splitting data over two devices keeps each devices data usage down. I'm usually at 4-6GB a month on both my phone and tablet individually. It's great when you're traveling to be able just whip the tablet out quickly and start using it. I'm not selling anyone on the idea of 3G but it has its advantages.
And there's zero chance the Prime has a GSM radio in it. It wasn't shown in the tear down and wasn't in the sample sent to the FCC for clearance.
yea i had a xoom and phone and it was too much to pay for data so now im just goona hotspot it and not pay $40 for something i dont need.
My Wi-Fi is really bad since the ICS update. Is anyone else having the same issue?
My wifi is pretty good, better reception than my Android phone.
Mine seems the same as before which is just fine. It does better than my Droid charge for sure.

Wifi was great before ICS and is still great afterwards. Better reception than my T-bolt.
I can be outside in the yard on the opposite side of my house from the router and still get 3 bars and great speeds. I guess I just got lucky.
Mine is the same as before, too. Can't really complain.

I've been holding off on the Prime due too all the talk about bad wifi speeds and range. Are you guys saying that it is actually not an issue? I don't care about the GPS that much, even though it has been horribly handled by Asus. But wifi is a "make it or break it" part of the product for me. Is it worse than the TF101? I have seen a lot of posts that it is worse, but you guys say that it is really good.
In doubt...

Not an issue on mine. I have conducted tests against my laptop/tf101/ipad1...my prime is right in the mix.

No real improvements here. Just about the same. I'm going to change my router's 2.4 Ghz band back to combined b/g/n as opposed to isolated g (which helped my Prime a LOT) to test out if ICS truly helped at all.
I'm on ICS and just switched to g only from a/b/g/n, and my speed greatly improved, so it doesn't seem that ICS made a difference in that regard. Wish I knew why using g only helps so much with the speed on the Prime. I'm in an apartment complex with many signals, and I'm wondering if that had anything to do with it.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I'm finding that I get an extra bar indicated, but I don't think it's really any better or worse with ICS.
My experience has been a bit odd with it. As far as the signal indicator goes, my wifi reception SEEMS worse than on Honeycomb. However, I haven't lost signal at all and my speeds are great.
Overall, I'd say it's about the same, but the indicator seems to fluctuate much easier.
Same as before (which is still weak), but it is still not as good as any of my laptops, Skyrocket, Blackberry, or iPhone.
I'm actually getting better wifi range to my router.

Interesting. I'm going to do some research into whether being near so many other wireless signals may have something to do with g only performing better than a/b/g/n when I get a chance. Then again, devices like my laptop and iPad1 pull the same speed regardless of whether my router is set to g only or a/b/g/n...ugh.
I'm using a D-Link DIR-655, which is not a dual band router.

Mine is by far worse!
I barely even have a chance to tell before my Prime reboots. But it shows it as having a poor signal even when I'm right next to it and it never actually connects. Just says obtaining IP address.
With honeycomb my phone (evo 3d) would get more reception, it could see networks the prime wouldn't. Since the update my prime not only sees all the networks its getting great speeds even on the weak ones.
Same after ICS, which is good.
It's about the same for me. But I had some issues with rebooting at first, but now it is better.

Go into the WiFi settings, "forget" the network, and then reconnect. I had a similar issue after the ICS update on my home network and this fixed it for me.
Also, people shouldn't rely on the number of bars the WiFi indicator in the bottom right has. I've found this to be very inaccurate, and almost useless. I've had no bars or one bar and pulled in speeds just as good as when I had 2 or 3 bars. Instead of basing your assumptions on this, use the speedtest.net app and the wifi analyzer app.
I just purchased a new Netgear WNDR4500 from the reviews, this is the fastest Wireless router on the market today.
I noticed on my wifes IPad(1) she sees both the 2.4G and 5G networks, on my laptop, I see both of them, on both my Android EVO 4G running rooted Kings ROM Unleashed R5 and my Transformer Prime, I can not see the 5G network.
This router supports SIMULTANEOUS DUAL BAND — Runs both 2.4 and 5GHz bands concurrently.
So I am trying to figure out why my Prime does not see the 5G network?
it doesn't have a 5Ghz radio so you won't see that network.

It does support Wireless N. Just not the overhyped and less than stellar 5Ghz band. People so fooled by marketing hype on that frequency. It actually not guareenteed tl get faster speeds and has alot less range than 2.4ghz band. Prime does support the N 2.5ghz.

*shrug*
Sure, it's not guaranteed to be faster, but it can be a lot faster for many. By way of example, there are 15+ different wifi routers around my apartment... there is a TON of 2.4Ghz interference, and my testing reveals significantly higher performance using the 5 Ghz band.
More options are better for customers, and it's a shame that the TFPrime only gives us 2.4 Ghz.
you might find it a shame but in reality it does not make a difference unless you are running servers type environment. my hd streaming with n 2.4hz is perfectly fine.
but again, watch HD movies on 10.1 screen is dumb n redundant. IMO.
Ya used to work a tech store in a mall, there were 30+ 2.4ghz networks visible from my store, we set up on 5ghz and no problems connecting, much better speed, a lot lower range. Its intentionally lower range to help reduce the problem of overcrowding the system.
Anyways, confirm, no 5ghz abilities on the prime. Shame, really, they could have put it in, however with the other wifi issues i guess its one more thing to go wrong.
I'm curious as to your setup of the 4500. I've got the 3700 and I had issue with the N band of the 2.4gHz. I found when I set it at 145Mbps the Prime would connect. When I set it at 300Mbps it wouldn't. In fact nothing wanted to connect when I had the 2.4Ghz set to 300Mbps.
How do you have yours running?
note: Would the 300Mbps setting on the 5gHz cause any issue?

The framework is in the kernel. Its might just be a matter of Asus not enabling it yet like faceunlock and wifi direct. Once bootloader unlock tool drops, developers will more than likely be able to enable these features.
same problem

I also have the same problem. Did you find the answer to this question?
Hi
I bought a dual band 5ghz router last night and I cant seem to connect my prime to it, it doesn't appear in the list of wireless networks so my question is does the prime support dual band? my galaxy nexus had no problems doing so
Cheers
Prime can't connect to 5ghz band. Need to be on 2.4.
Is it hardware or software? Can any roms do so. This really sucks that it cannot
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA

Of all the reading i've done on the subject the hardware is apparently definitely 2.4 only, even if the software may have an area which looks like you can enable it the hardware cannot do it.
Yea its hardware related. The wireless chip can't receive 5ghz radio signals. As far as I know that's pretty common for all phones and tablets.
there are only a couple tablets that can do 5ghz. most do not and use the standard, as standard range is alot more than 5ghz range.
Does your router not support 2.4ghz and 5ghz simultaneously? If not why not stay on 2.4ghz?
Why do you need to be pushing 5ghz though your walls?
My name is Optimus Prime and I send this message..
If i could i would be running ONLY 5ghz, faster, less range means less crowdedness on the different bands, whats not to like?
problem with 5ghz on prime is the prime already has a shoddy wifi as it is, 5ghz would jsut cripple it. And from what i read the chip supports 5ghz but there is no antenna for it or something i forget exactly.
Basically, no 5ghz on the prime but i think thats by design. Wish it had it tho, would love to see a GPS dongle repurposed for wifi. Wishfull thinking tho methinks.
