My x10MP is giving a warning it's running low on internal storage space.
Is there a way to to transfer apps to the SD card w/o rooting the phone?
Any other suggestions on how to free up space in the internal storage?.

i'm afraid u cant without rooting ur phone. or you should be running 2.2+. u have to root to use link2sd.
Thanks. I don't think the x10MP has been updated beyond 2.1, so 2.2+ is not an option.
You could use a custom rom. Even the 2.3.7 versions work really well nowadays. Hard to install without rooting though...

Rooting is pretty much essential if you want to do any sort of fiddling on your phone.
If you haven't rooted yours and you're running low on internal storage, I am willing to bet you've got lots of app's that came pre-installed that you don't need. I rooted mine and removed loads of stuff I had no use for: Timescape, the neo reader, the radio, etc. And I freed up a lot of memory.
Just be careful if you're removing bloatware though, it's all too easy to remove something you actually need. It's worth looking on here for a safelist of app's you can remove.

You don't know what you miss until you stay on the android 2.1 my friend!
I was like regenerated when I installed custom roms on my mini - not only the install of apps on Sd card, but things like overclocking of the processor, freeing more RAM memory would have been impossible without rooting and a custom ROM 2.3.7.
Just think about it - how faster is working a phone with a 600mHz processor, overclocked to 787mHz!

I am hesitating to take the rooting + custom rom route, since if something goes wrong I'll be left with an unusable phone.
For the most point, if anything goes wrong, you can simply re-install the official firmware by using SEUS. You'll lose all your personal data on the phone (but not the SD card though, that's safe) so you should make sure you backup before you start doing anything.
You have to do something quite astonishingly silly to hard-brick your phone (basically breaking it so much only SE can repair it) so as long as you take your time and pay close attention to the process, you should be fine.

Make a backup of all your SMS and Contacts using My Phone Explorer. there are a few apps on the market doing backup of applications too, but I'm not sure whether they can backup apps from non rooted phones. After backing up, go ahead through the root process. You will love the CM7 ROM, don't worry! It's far better than the 2.1 Stock Eclair! Just Look at this:
My Mini is far better using CM7 than much more powerful on the hardware point of view other phones. With some other improvements I even achieved a result of 1444! So think about it.
The CPU on my Mini is working at 787mHz, while your stock one works at 600mHz.

Use the search button has more than 1 thread with this!
For the rooting: download SuperOneClick, open it press Root and follow the instructions.
For flashing Kernel and unlocking bootloader follow the instructions in this topic, the first post and the links inside the instructions:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068553
For going back to stock ROM - it's easy, download SEUS from SE site, install, open and follow the instructions, as you choose to install firmware although you already have the latest version.
And last but not least - don't be so lazy! We all didn't know what to do here in the beginning, but yet we found what we needed. And you want everything without any effort.

Hello guys. I'm new to smartphones and Vibrant is my first. I bought one off ebay for $240 and it has Android version 2.1-update1 installed on it. I would like to know if you guys recommend that I ungrade it to Froyo or above. I've heard some bad things about Froyo and wouldnt like to regret doing the update. A ROM is pretty much your OS. All these Froyo ROMs are really good, just know how to flash properly. I STRONGLY suggest you:
1) Consistently backup all your apps with "Titanium Backup" and google, AND make a copy of all your data on your computer.
2) READ, I suggest you read the Bible (it's Stickied at the top) and LEARN before you do ANYTHING.
3) And lastly, when you mess up, as EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE has, you will need to know how to revert back to STOCK firmware.

For some reason Titanium Backup does not work for me. When I run it I get 0 as a number of apps installed and when I click backup all apps and system files it immediately says backup completed. I've been using the Flii Backup. Is that okay? How do I copy all the stuff to my PC? Thank you for all the info.
Also, should I go with the 2.3 Gingerbread version instead?

when you open Titanium Backup, does it say that it has been granted SU permissions?
If it does, then we're good so far. I've had that happen when I first used TiB on my hubby's phone. The way I got over that was to hit the menu button and select "Batch". You should now be on the Batch Backup/Restore - ALL page. From there, I selected RUN for "Backup all user apps + system data". That should force TiB to go ahead and make the backups.
Now, as for copying the files over onto your PC, just use plug in your USB cable and connect it to your PC. Your phone should emit a little tone or vibrate after this (or at least mine does but it's been a long time since I've used stock). From there, slide down your notifications bar (slide your finger from the top of the screen to the bottom of it) and you should see a note telling you that your USB is connected and if you hit that, it will ask you if you would like to mount your SD card (or something similar to that). Select "yes" and your PC will ask you if you want to open these "drives". Select "yes" again and now you will be able to explore the files on your phone the same way you'd do it on your PC.
As for the whole copy+paste thing, the files work the same as if you're copying files around your PC. Generally, I keep multiple backups on my PC, so it might be a smart idea to label your Titanium Backup file with name or date (ie: Titanium Backup - Stock JFD or Titanium Backup - ROMname blahKernel).
Afaik, we don't have a stable Gingerbread ROM yet but I think our devs are getting pretty close. However, we have several stable Froyo ROMs available in the Android Dev section.

Yes. It seems to work now. I've used the Clockwork Recovery app and did backup through it. Would that be enough? Where is the Android Dev section? What do I do next? Thank you.
As far as the ROM goes. Which one would you recommend? I was looking at the Axura 2.3.1.0 and Ginger Clone R2. How about Nero v5? Thanks guys!
Welcome! And yes you should definitely update to Froyo, or a rom based on Froyo. I'm not sure what you heard that soured your opinion of Froyo...but it is a noticeable performance upgrade! It's been a while but I'm pretty sure the JIT compiler was introduced with 2.2 (someone fact check me pls) which should improve java performance multiple times.
I recommend Bionix-V 1.21 for a custom ROM made especially for the Vibrant. It's extremely fast and the community is friendly, helpful, and most importantly VERY active. I linked you to a guide that should answer any questions you might have regarding the rom, and android in general.

Update: Ok, guys. I went to this link and got the Axura 2.3.1.0 installed with the use of this video, which is very useful and I was able to perform this flash flawlessly.
Anyway, The ROM is really responsive and I have only found one flaw, which is that the Fast Web Install app does not work on it. I get the message that they are working on it. Also, the Titanium Backup did not back up anything. All was backed up by the ROM Manager and the Flii Backup.
This ROM has impressed me with its responsiveness. It seems like a high-quality ROM and this is the first time I did the flash, so I'm not familiar with other ROMs. However, this ROM seems like a good pick for now at least. Can you guys advise me where I can sign up for notifications about the Axura updates? Any further suggestions? I appreciate your precious time.
In the Questions and Answers section, at the top, there is a NOOB guide... I would HIGHLY suggest reading it. It explains just about EVERYTHING you could want to do to your new phone!
As far as your next mod... start customizing your phone! Go to the Theme section of the forum and browse around for some custom battery mods and framework mods. It's CRAZY amazing how customizable these phones are!
I used to use the ROM's on here, but since Froyo came out, I'm sticking with a deodexed stock of KB1 (the latest and greatest update). That allows me to modify my framework and all the phone images without having to worry about screwing up one of the custom ROMs out there. I always feel safer with stock... plus root of course. Replaced my boot and shutdown animations with custom ones I created... don't have them posted on here as they are made specifically for my band and noone here would want them!
Keep your contacts synced to google so you don't lose them, backup with Titanium every once in a while to keep your game data and app data up to date, keep reading on here about modding, you could start reading the google developers website to learn about the inner workings of Android and how to write programs... so much to do and so little time in life!!!

1- What is it that you backup when you backup your phone? Is it the content of the internal and SD card in one file? Or multiple files? Is this what's called a ROM?
Because last time I checked ROM means Read Only Memory, and my internal and Sd card are read and write.... ssssooooooooooo confusing.
1.1 Where's the OS (Android) installed? On the internal memory and on another partition?
2- I got my phone over at Koodo mobile. It's got their company name on the home screen. To avoid warranty problems:
2.1 Is this going to be copied over if I make a backup of the phone?
2.2 So many people suggest to just download a ROM of the stock version I got in my phone... would I have to find a Koodo ROM for the Optimus One or will any android 2.2 ROM do the trick.
2.3 Does putting a custom ROM or android 2.3 leave traces somewhere on the phone, even of you put back the original backup ROM?
3- How do you know if you made a proper backup and the size it should be?

I spent the last hour reading all over the internet, and especially here, about how to root and use custom roms... (faqs, guides, the dictionary...)and some things are still not clear. I just like it when I want to get into doing touchy operations like updating firmwares and such and I get my facts straight.
(FYI, total android and smartphone noob, advanced windows user)
- I know my phone has internal memory and SD memory, and apps I download go on the internal or SD memory, but what about the OS itself? What is stored and where?
- I read a lot about using custom ROMs, but I couldn't find a reliable, confirmed answer to the following question: can I make a 100% image/backup of my phone before starting anything and if so, how?
Also, can I use this backup to revert the phone back to its original state and make my phone carrier believe nothing ever happened to it in case I need to? Is this image going to include stuff from the internal and SD and refer to question #1 everything stored in memory on the phone?

The overly careful person that I am asks:
- How do you call the backup of the whole phone data?
- When you do this backup, does it create 1 file, or multiple files? I ask this because I still don't understand how these phones work. Are they like gaming roms and emulators where you get a rom (copy of the cartridge) and you can also add other roms to change the way it works? Like a mod?
I got about 50 other questions, but it's mainly because I don't exactly know what ROMs are in smartphones.
It would be awesome if somebody could point me towards a "Everything you need to know about android phones and custom ROMS" for dummies. I understand how to use it, but not how it works in the inside so that I can safely go ahead with flashing and stuff...
Does this make sense? Tech stuff about the way the OS works and what is a ROM and a kernel... so that I know what I'm doing.

Finally re-read the whole dictionary page, and in addition to some other info I read, I could make sense of a lot more info.
The general info page uses terms that is not covered in the dictionary/terms page so a lot of info I can't understand.
Like the info about what the kernel does and why change it. Leads to a wikipedia generic kernel page.
NAND actually allows for creating a 1:1 copy of the phone's content. Probably a copy of the internal memory. Another guess is that the OS is also on that partition but I can't find that info.
About the SD card, it seems to allow the copy of some native apps.
Only thing that's not clear is if it leaves ANY traces on the phone after a recover from a backup.
The Os is no stored in the internet memory and sdcard, it's somewhere else you don't need to know about.
Yes, a Nandroid backup restores your settings before you flash a new ROM. You need to unroot it to make your carrier believe nothing has happened. Another way, you can flash kdz which will completely reset your phone back into into the state you bought it(minus the carrier installed apps).
You only can overclock CPU, not GPU.

I send my htc wildfire with the cm7 and the screen is in deep cracked situation(display still showing)... So I send it for servicing but they saw my os is cyanogenmod... But they never void my warrenty lol... And so more, I gor free repair BUT in may... My phone cracked again, worst... It bends!

I downloaded the titanium backup app from the market but it seems that it doesnt work.
What would be the best backup program to dl for the stock tab? (free or not)
How does it work, what and where does it save ? only apps, or all my files (pictures, favorites, widgets etc)

You need to be rooted for titanium to work.
Your 16gb capacity is your SD card on the tab.
Install cwm (see thread here or use overcome thread/guide) and you will gain root and the cwm menu to flash custom roms. The nandroid recovery menu will let you install a zip but cwm will give added options and root.

Im actually a noob with the android world but not a noob in the pc world.
I successfully overclocked my pc 6 months ago and my system is stable (didnt crash once) and i did that without knowledge, just by reading.

Check out MyBackupPro. It works for non-rooted Tabs and saves the backup either online or on the sd card.

Well here's what you need to do, in my opinion :
1. DO NOT FLASH ANYTHING that comes from Samsung. If you have an unlocked bootloader, you want to keep it that way.
2. Read up on the rooting/custom recovery thread so you can understand how to get nvflash up and running. This will help immensely as you start flashing custom roms and things go wrong. Backups using the CWM recovery are the quick way out of trouble when you flash a ROM and it screws up.
3. Get fastboot going, as this is probably the best tool for getting out of any trouble you get in to. These devices are incredibly hard to brick once you have the right tool set at your disposal.

thanks, following the info i got in a previous post, when it says backup on sd card and that i use a tab that doesnt have an external sdcard, does it mean it will save it on the tab ? Then if i get a problem with the tab, ill losse everything ?
If so, then i guess saving online is the best way to do it right ?

well i got the anwser about the storage space online for thoses who might want to know
with the 4.99$ payment of the Mybackup pro app, its 100mb online
for 1$/month or 10$/year : 250mb
for 2$/month or 20$/year : 1gb
yesterday i backup my apps, music and pictures on my tab for 235mb total and i only owed the tab for 3 weeks now.
to me this is ridiculous, i better backup everything on my external HD with the usb cable, it might take longer and ill have to do it manually but i rather do that than pay 20$ per year.
anyone has a better solution ?

I'm new here and recently bought a live with walkman, my first android phone.
However, I'm running short on space and so I'm looking into rooting.
But before attempting anything I would like to ask a few questions a bout it.
I'm planning on using DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit, which seems pretty straightforward. The thing is that I'm not sure
what to do before or after attempting this, the closest 'guide' I found for this was the following thread:

1] Can use titanium back up to backup apps and its configured settings
2] Can modify system files for looks and performance
3] and can you CPU boosters to overclock underclock CPU can use sd-ext for external SD as phone memory and much more...................

So after doing a lot more reading after the last time I posted here 2 days ago, I made myself this checklist of things I have/want to do.
But before I do this, I have these questions:
- Is this the right way to do it. I may have forgotten something or may have used an outdated guide…
- If I succeed in doing this, but am, for whatever reason, unhappy about the result, will the unroot give me back my untouched phone, or would it still be detectable that I tempered with it?
- I’m having a hard time deciding what to do whit the partitioning of the sd card. Mainly because I haven’t found a guide (yet) that explains what everything is used for. As I understand it, you delete everything on it, create a new primary FAT32 partition (for a 16gb card), which you use as you would your original sd card. But I don’t yet understand whether to use ext2 or swap system or both, as I do not yet understand what they are meant to do. Is the ext2 used to store the applications and act as a second internal storage and the swap system as extra memory for the phone? I’m still reading but haven’t found an answer yet :/

Ok, I've been able to root my device, which didn't take long, and I don't know what I was afraid of. I'm going ahead and I'm going to download titaniumbackup and rootexplorer to backup/freeze and use rom manager to create an image and a complete backup and then I'm off exploring
@abhishekcal: As I understand it, unrooting will, providing everything goes as planned, will give you back your stock phone, but while it's rooted SE might detect this and you may lose your warranty, but then again, I'm not completely sure, so you better wait for an answer from a senior member

Hello, and thank you, I am happy to here some good news. I am obviously new to this, but I love to try out different OSs and remaster them the way I see fit. I have just not taken the plunge with android. Since I have never installed any, it's hard to say witch ones I would like best. I would take any ROMs I could get. I figure I can experiment and learn with my Eris, then re purpose it for my son to play games, take pictures etc.
P.S. I downloaded the Jcase / Eclipse3 one click root. Is this the method you would recommend for getting su privileges? I would love to hear your preference on an easy and up to date rooting method. My Eris is currently bone stock with official 2.1, and up to date according to it.

Yes, if you can find the JCase 1-click root, that will root the phone just fine.
There is another method very well documented here: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html (which also walks you through installing for your first custom ROM.)

Oh, good question. I would avoid it if you can. The Eris will insist that you activate. However, if you follow the prompt to activate and then press the disconnect button as soon as you hear it ring, it will try activation again two more times. If you disconnect after hearing the ring those two times as well, the phone will give up on activation and allow to continue with setup.

Not necessarily. In my experience, xtrSENSE is fastest, but the GB ROMs are just fine. You may not notice the difference. However, xtrSENSE has a method called cache2cache that frees up more storage space or user applications and data. If you install a lot of apps, xtrSENSE may give you more space.
That said, there are disadvantages, including missing out on apps that do not run on android 2.1.
There is something called xtrcache2cache that you can flash on the GB ROMs to give you the same sort of space. I'll try to find a link.w

Not on android 2.1, but the two gingerbread ROMs will update the market to the play store.

The download link there seems to work.
Copy that file (xtrCMCache2cache.zip) to your SD card. This is only for the Gingerbread ROMs - it's not necessary for xtrSENSE.
Restart the phone to recovery. If you have already flashed one of those ROMs, simply flash that xtrCMCache2cache.zip file - do not wipe data or Dalvik cache first. Restart the phone, and you'll have probably about 20-30 MB more free storage space for apps and data.
If you have not already flashed GSB or CondemnedSoul's, do this:
- restart in Recovery
- wipe menu
- wipe data/factory reset
- main menu
- flash a zip file, and choose GSB or Condemned
- flash a zip file, and choose xtrCMCache2cache.zip
- restart the phone

OK, I will read what I have gathered one or two more times before taking the plunge. I am thinking of using the Jcase method, it seems pretty much idiot proof. I have the file and ROMs stored on my PC, and now on a CD as well, just so I don't loose them. If I have this right, I will:
Pre-Steps:
Copy the Jcase one click root file to an empty SD card, install a file explorer app capable of launching it, take a deep breath, here we go Or maybe I have to copy to android filesystem first?
1. Execute Jcase's one click, and after reboot, I should have the Amon Ra recovery. This is simple, but also the most dangerous part? If this were to fail, it would be similar to a bad BIOS flash. This would brick the phone, if I am understanding this correctly.
2. Then Use the recovery to flash rootme.zip now located on SDCard. Going to use a 2 Gb card from my old LG 8350 (phone before Eris).
3. Do Nand backup of semi clean stock OS. By doing so I will loose the stock recovery for good, meaning no more resets to OG clean?
3.5? On second thought, doing one last reset first would remove all user data with my name and credentials. It may be wise to do this, as it will eventually be in the hands of a 5 year old. This would prevent accidental purchases, I think! On the other hand, if I ever break or loose my new phone and need a temp phone, I could keep this image (as is) to use temporarily with Verison until I get a replacement! I can only choose one of these options. I guess the latter is best, and use only a custom ROM for my son to play with. Hopefully I can temporarily disable or somehow limit su before giving it too him.
4. Do Nand backup of original official image, and put somewhere safe, like 2 places + on CD then remove from SD for more available space.
5. Flash one of the 3 downloaded ROMs and also xtrCMCache2cache if desired to desire-c
6. I assume that appstoSD is something I would need to download now, then add after previous steps, if I feel the need!
7. Then its off to test land! I hope I understand this correctly. The one step I have missed is definitely very important. I did not verify the MD5 on Jcase's one click. In fact I don't even remember where I downloaded it from. Truth being told, I have never manually done a MD5 verification! I guess I have one more step that I absolutely need to learn as it is much more important in Android, especially for recovery!

No, Your regular SD card is fine. You do need to enable third-party app installs; you'll find that setting in settings->applications.

Yes. You must restart the phone as if you wanted to make a phone call. Many people get too eager and try to get into Recovery before full restarting.
I can't believe that flashing Amon_RA is all terribly dangerous. There are ways to recover. In fact, I have not seen anybody report a brick after running the JCase 1-click. I'm sure that it will be fine.

You *could* do the Nand Backup before running rootme.zip. Actually, you only really need to run rootme.zip if you want to do something with root with the stock Android you have now. Some people may, for example, install the application Titanium Backup Pro (which requires root) and batch backup all user apps (menu->batch and choose to run that option from the list) and then, after installing a new custom ROM, reinstall Titanium from the market/play store and then batch restore all missing apps and data. It's a very powerful way to get the phone running all of your apps and data without reinstalling from scratch.
That brings up one more thing: if you decide to install xtrSENSE, you do not need to do a factory reset if you want to keep all of your apps and data. Of course, if you want a fresh start you may, but xtrSENSE will keep all of your apps and data and give you a faster Eris with more room for apps and data.
Also, it *is* possible to get stock recovery back, though not without losing all of you data. There is a ROM called Flashback_21v2 that will bring back stock recovery and an unrooted Eris if you wish. The phone will act as if it was never rooted. You can find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=792026
That would be a good thing to keep on your phone, just in case. (Though I have to say that I am hosting the location of those files on my website and I have no plans to stop doing so, so they should be around for a while...) You'll probably be fine with the "no radio" version, but if you can spare the space on your computer, (that's a bit of a joke; the files are small), I'd download both.

No, you can do both. Do a Nand Backup of the phone after you root it, which will be stored on the SD card. Wipe data/factory reset and you can installa ROM and then always go back into recover and Nand restore what you backed up originally to get your phone back as it was when you ran the backup. Familiar with Norton Ghost for Windows PCs? That's what Nand backup and restore does - it takes a full snapshot of your phone as it is, and when you restore, it's as if you had just turned off your phone for a long time - it's back to the way it was at the time you made the backup. You can have multiple backups stored - as many as will fit on the SD card.
6. I assume that appstoSD is something I would need to download now, then add after previous steps, if I feel the need!

Well... xtrSENSE support apps2sd as it is, and there are scripts to turn that functionality on. The GB ROMs support using the Android-native moving of apps to sd, so I would avoid apps2sd for them.

HOWEVER, can I suggest instead that you use the 1-click root here, prepared by Scary Alien: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...2-custom-recovery-trackball-not-required.html
If you look at the bottom of the first post, "Scenario 5", there is another version of 1click with a better version of Amon_RA (that allows you to use the hardware keys to navigate recovery, rather than just the trackball; sometimes the trackball doesn't work in the original Amon_RA). That version I guarantee is safe, and Scary Alien has the MD5 right there.

OK, running 1 click directly from from SD card. Third-party apps ticked on before hand, check.
After running 1 click, do normal restart, then shutdown, then go into recovery via vol / end start up.

My Eris already has already has all apps removed, I tried to make it as clean and small as possible. Just looked at the xtrSENSE page and copied some tips, sounds nice and fast, liking that!

I have never used Norton Ghost, but I have used Macrium Reflect, Seagate Disk Wizard, Acronis etc. I get the image/snapshot thing. I plan to store backups in other locations, then copy back to SD if and when needed.
Just did some reading on the xtrSENSE page about aps2sd, guess I will do some more reading about native moving of apps to sd soon.
The MD5 I have matches yours. I downloaded MD5 Calculator and I guess it works.
After reading the page including "Scenario 5" I absolutely agree. I downloaded it, and will use the "scary alien" modded version with the added functionality. Thank you very much for pointing this out. Looks like no change in the simple execution besides the app/file to run, very nice!

Hey, one other thing: CondemnedSoul posted a script that you can run that disables the mobile radio, so you can make the device WiFi only. It's here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216571
I have to say that I have never tried it, but it seems from the replies in that thread that many have, successfully.

This may be redundant, but does anyone have a copy of the eris jelly bean rom laying around? Just found my old rooted eris with cyanogenmod and I would like to try jelly bean or ICS.

Of course it isn't redundant, in fact this maintains the forum active, well a bit.
Here is the Jellybean Rom you requested, it is from MongooseHelix's build. It has a different Gapps package from what MongooseHelix actually established but I assume no issues may occur. :highfive:
