Recently my phone started occasionally going into a slow-as-molasses mode where even the simplest task takes 20-30 secs to complete. Of course this makes the phone completely unusable. If I'm on a call and it happens it just turns itself off mid-call or sometimes automatically reboots but the reboot takes forever and the problem is still there. I end up having to take the battery out for a few seconds then it will work normally until the next episode. I have the CPU set to the max speed so normally it's fine. Also, I have a triple battery set-up so there is usually plenty of juice left when this happens. I have no idea what is triggering this and luckily it only happens occasionally. I'm using fxdjacentyfxd's excellent 6.5 ROM and having no other problems. If anyone has a solution or workaround or has experienced this please advise.
Thanks & Merry Christmas!
If the phone is getting hot I have bad news for you. It might be procesor. The one we have is in HD2 and xperia x10 if i remmeber well. The HD2 and same xperia x10 had a big problem overheating and rebooting whille talking , sms-ing, music listening, multitasking... I hope that isn't case for you. Haven't heard yet that someone had broken CPU around here on tg01. P.S. flash new ROM
I have this problem myself with my TG. The only solution it was Miro8 rom in my case. It is because your carrier.

The phone is not getting hot. Removing the battery then reinstalling it always fixes the problem (so far). I may have to do a hard (master) reset if the problem persists as I realize that one of the problems with Windows Mobile is it is prone to occasionally getting corrupted, at least in my experience with custom WM 6.0 ROM on my HTC 8525 over three years.

Any idea how the carrier can cause the problem? I've had the same carrier for 5 years including several months with the TG01 and never had this problem before.
yeah, its a WinMo issue
the software gets corrupted.
I faced this issue on my older WinMo devices. best bet is to hard reset!

Thanks Oly! Guess I'll do a full backup then BAM, hard reset. Hate to do it, but if it will fix this infernal problem, so be it.
Thanks again & Merry Christmas!!!

In my case the carrier has two separate network (one for 2G and one for 3G), but it is certain that if i use the phone under that carrier it works as you described!
I put another sim (from another carrier) and the phone work great! So i identify the problem as beeing created by the carrier network or phone radio!
But i tried diferent radio and the result was that no mather the radio version I use the phone get slow in Cosmote network (the carrier I speak of).
Hi, I had exactly the same problem about one year ago.
Used to work the 'hard reset' stuff but in a days it slows down again and again.
I checked my SD card on the PC and looked like it was working fine, but it really wasn't. I had the final clue by using by a few days the phone without the SD... It worked just fine without sd.
So I decided to buy a ultra cool (an expensive BTW) SDHC class 10 and every problem with TG01 was solved!
Well, not every problem... Still having a little one with the GPS signal and the 3G data but it's not about the same thing.. but i'll still reading post here. Just forgot about this problem cause I was using some cooked roms from this place, but I had to return to the Movistar ES original in order to unlock the phone and now... you know, just don't work anymore. If I can't finx this **** with the original rom I'll go back to another coocked one.
Good luck!

Greetings from Thailand, kijotex! Hadn't considered the SD card as the possible problem. Mine is a 16GB Class 6 and seems to work fine. Did you check your SD card for errors or reformat it before buying the new card? I've used the same card in my previous phone, an HTC 8525/Hermes without problems (that I know of).
Thanks for responding & Happy New Year!

So you solve the problem with S-L-O-W think?
How did you solve it?
what was wrong?
I ask you because in my case only after switching the carrier I could use the phone again!

I backed up everything on the phone late the other night and was going to hard/master reset it the next morning but got called out of town and didn't do it. I did swap out my custom triple-battery pack and went back to my original Toshiba battery for a day. Surprisingly, the phone worked normally so re-installed the triple battery pack and it has been working 'normally' since then. I have no idea why. Between the quirks in Windows Mobile and the TG01 quirks I just never know what this phone is going to do next. If/when the s-l-o-w mode problem shows up again I'll hard/reset it and post again.
Cheers...

I finally did the master-clear this week as the phone was getting completely unusable. That seems to have helped tremendously but the phone went into the SLOW mode again today and I had to reboot it 2 or 3 times before it finally was normal. I had just played the Tiger Woods golf game on it for about 30 minutes so wonder if that didn't contribute somehow. I then went into Toshiba Power settings and unchecked the Reduce CPU speed if low battery box even though immediately after playing the game the battery meter showed 70%, but we all know how buggy that is.
My phone was getting screwed up because the case (actually a thin sleeve) was too tight and it allowed buttons to get mashed while it was in my pocket. This may not have been a problem except I had the Lock function disabled. Over time that random button pushing definitely corrupted WM6.5 just like it had done to my old HTC 8525. I'm now using a 2.5" USB external hard drive case until I can find a better fitting one.
I think I finally solved the problem. [crosses fingers] The Master Clear helped with some of the problems, but didn't cure the random S-L-O-W mode. I ended up reinstalling the same ROM and so far the phone is working flawlessly. I'm guessing that WM6.5 became corrupted over time and that was the culprit. I also had the phone Lock disabled and that continually caused buttons to get accidentally pressed while bicycling and/or jogging and speed walks. I personally feel the buttons need a bit more spring tension, especially the Sleep/Lock button on the left hand side. The Lock is enabled now so hopefully that will help.

In case it may be of interest, I have been using the Capdase leather sleeve case for a long time now without any issues. Nice red microfibre lining and pull tab to extract the phone easily. This UK supplier says no longer available, but most likely there are some about if you search a bit.
Best regards,

Hi Kevin,
Nice to 'hear' from you again and thanks for the tip. I'm using the Mugen back cover for their 2600 mAh battery, although with my custom battery pack. The phone is now about 1/2"(17mm) thick. Do you think this Capdase sleeve will fit?
I'm also glad you answered as I was about to post a new thread or PM you with a question about cooking my own phone config into a custom ROM. After just having to reinstall all of my add-ons, customized SPB GUI, etc., twice while trying to fix this problem, I'm now thinking about backing up everything with a custom ROM. That way if I have to reinstall the ROM I won't have to spend another couple of days getting the phone config back to where it was. I've perused the TG01 kitchen thread but confess I'm still confused about how to do it. And since 99.9% of my stuff is installed on the microSD card will the new custom ROM be able to access that existing data?
Finally, I have to say this phone continues to amaze me (when WM isn't acting up). I just can't see any benefit to 'upgrading' to WP7 like many have done, possibly bricking the phone in the process, or trashing the SDcard, etc. as it just doesn't seem worth it. Now I admit that the reason I bought this phone last year was to install Android, but after having a Viewsonic G-Tablet for a few months with a custom Gingerbread 2.3 ROM installed on it I just gave the tablet back (to my buddy) as it was so freakin' buggy. Bottom line is I'm not so impressed with Android at this point, especially custom ROMs. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I look forward to your sage advice.
Cheers!
Jim
Well... It appears the TG01 show is over
My TG01 has now gone into permanent S-L-O-W mode and I can't get it out of it. I've soft reset it probably 20-25 times, even yanked the battery out while it's still on hoping to shock the system. Did this many times and it didn't make any difference. I even left the battery out all night last night hoping for a miracle this morning. Of course, no change. I'm afraid to try to reinstall the ROM again as it probably couldn't complete the task before the battery runs down. As it is now I can't even make a call as it simply goes so slow it won't even connect, so if I can't find a solution soon the TG01 is going into the trash bin. During the past 3 weeks I have spent way too many hours trying to resolve this problem and have simply run out of ideas and patience. I also Googled it and a few people have had the exact same problem but no one has posted a solution.
If anyone has a tip or suggestion please advise.
tg01 getting slower
In my case the issue was fully solved by: reformatting sd card (full format) and reflashing the ROM. No freezings since I did it 2 months ago. So, I would say it's either your sd card or your ROM. A hardware failure is also possible but it worth trying before throwing your tg01 in the trash Good luck!

Hi mikiril,
Thanks for the fast response. I've tried everything including reflashing the ROM and even that only worked for a few days. I've been researching the problem again this morning and found the problem and a temporary solution. The problem is device.exe is running wide open using between 95%-100% of CPU cycles. A French TG01 website says it has something to do with clicking on the Restrict Sleep Mode button in the Toshiba Power Saving Settings menu, which I had done at some point, but later went back and unchecked it. Their 'solution' is to activate both Bluetooth and WiFi then turn them off. I confirm that does work until the next bootup or Soft Reset. Maybe there's something in the registry that can undo whatever clicking on Restrict Sleep Mode has done. At least the phone is working at normal speed again, temporarily, so I have a little bit of hope.
Thanks!

Every time I reset or turn on my fone after shutting down, it will stuck at the logo boot up. It wasn't like that when I first bought the fone. Now it's getting worse and worse since the issue happens so frequently.
I have to take out the battery and put it back, then wait for about 3 to 5 mn before I turn the phone on.Then it would boot up as usual.
Is there anyone facing the same issue as I am? Any suggestion guys?
Are you experiencing excessive heat when this occurs? Also, can you give more info such as: does this happen only after recent charging or does it ever happen when the phone has been turned off for a long time? Was there any recent apps you installed or ROM changes when this started happening? Was there any potential damage done to the phone -dropped it, got it wet, or microwaved
When you say frequently, does that mean every time you restart? every other time? every five times?
Lastly, do you have any other issues/symptoms other than freezing at startup? Does the phone ever freeze during normal use?
i'd suggest you do a hard reset of your phone (hold down both vol up and vol down keys while powering on/resetting). that should fix the problem. if the problem still persists, it's probably some hardware faults.
Me too
My HD2 just started doing this too. It was fine for 7 weeks I have owned it. However, as described in this by OP, when doing soft reset would it would also get stuck on bootup logo. I'd have to remove the battery for a few minutes before it would bootup.
However, my HD2 also crashes and upon reboot then get stuck on bootup logo. It appears to crashes randomly eg not with any particular program or action.
I figured it was software issue so did hard reset. This worked fine. After hard reset the only software I loaded were Total Commander and Cookie Editor.
After Cookie Editor install I did soft reset and it got stuck on bootup logo. : (
So I did another hard reset but it hung up again upon reboot on bootup logo.
This appears to be a hardware issue. But has anyone else had same issue?

Hi. I got this problem for quite sometime and am so used to taking out and putting back and taking out and putting back the batt.
But now I have another prob: my ringtone suddenly went soft and I now have to keep myself alert all the time to see if there's any incoming call or SMS.
I would like to do a hard reset but the question is: will it set my phone back to the stock ROM or still retain the updated version - 1.66.707.1?
Thanks in advance.

HD2 issue
After some more searching it appears this is not uncommon for HD2. Its not clear to me if it is specific to T-Mobile HD2 or HD2 in general.
It appears to be a hardware issue. Although that is not 100% clear either. I find it hard to distinguish what some people report as 'freezing' which i believe is different to the issue described in this post which is 'hanging up' or 'getting stuck' on boot up screen - in my case it is the T-Mobile 'stick together' pink and white screen/logo.
(The 'freezing' issue that i believe is different to this 'getting stuck on bootup logo' issue appeared to have been resolved iwth new T-Mobile ROM - and I never experienced it on my HD2).
The resolution for getting stuck on bootup screen issue described here appears to have been to exchange HD2 (although some people exchanged up to 6 times and keep getting same issue!)
I think it is important to note that my HD2 performed fine for 7 weeks with lots of soft resets, hard resets, and lots of software installs (though no ROM reflashing) but within last week or so, start crashing randomly, then upon reboot get stuck on bootup screen/logo. This also became more frequent as time progressed. After doing hard reboot, the issue is now acute, eg it gets stuck on every reboot, and crashes more often.
This leads me to think some hardware has failed or degraded and is getting worse, maybe a connection/soldering etc?
However, is there any possibility that a ROM could 'degrade'? Can a ROM have a setting that is modifiable? (I know it is 'read only memory' but is it really?)
Anyways, love to hear from others on this issue.
Same problem here. Bought my HD2 in june. Cooked my own rom with Chucky's kitchen. Flashed different radios, hard resets, task 29 etc. Absolutely no problem. Worked fine for several weeks. But sometime it begun to freeze, auto resets, stuck at boot logo. It was getting worse. Even flashing stock rom it hungs at boot logo.
Now my HD2 is out for repair. Now waiting for returning. Hope they will change the motherboard.
several people have had their motherboards replaced and that has seemed to fix it for them. You'll probably have to fight with htc or your carrier, but should be able to get it replaced.
Hi guys. Another question:
I'm considering doing a hard reset. How do I store my messages before doing it? I can't seem to locate the folder that keeps all my messages.
TIA.
HD2 is an odd one
Thanks for replies. I really don't want to send it in .. but it will probably be the only way to resolve the issue. It will cost me courier there and back, and $20 'triage' fee .. total cost to me will be ~$100 just to have them look at it. Price of doing business I guess.
Anyways, I realized that one of my issues was that it was crashing when syncing. A little digging reveals that HTC Sense does something to all contacts when syncing first time putting a bit of html in contact notes field (weird but it is true .. its their way of reminding you bought an HTC phone?) So once I got it up and running, I disabled Sense and syncing went fine, no crashing.
(Btw, Sense also appears to do something with SMS msgs too so if you have lots it crashes on due to this reason too).
However, even with plain Jane MS today screen (eg not using Sense) it still crashed once on sync and again when listening to radio. Both times had to remove battery for few minutes before it would reboot without getting stuck at bootup logo.
But so far it seemed to be working 'better' without using Sense.
So, I re-enabled Sense to see what would happen and over a day it has crashed twice. I am going to see how it behaves for few days before sending it in as RMA repair.
Still, important point is that it was ok for 7 weeks, and then started crashing, more and more, even after hard reset, though some of issues may have been due to Sense (which is reported by many users).
It is still not a 'normal' thing for a $700 consumer device to have such erratic behaviour. So, given others have exchanged crashing handsets for new handset that has no issues points to underlying hardware issues as suggested above eg motherboard.
As comparison I also have HTC Diamond 2 which has been rock solid for 2 years of continuous use even with lots of software install, tweaking, reg hacks, etc.

Thanks. Btw I read before we can actually 'disable' Sense.
How do we do that?
Sense - go to Today
Go to Start - Settings
- iI you see the black HTC Settings (has 'Personalize' on top of items) then go to Menu and select 'All Settings' (this will show Windows Mobile's Settings. HTC Sense 'Settings' doesn't everything Windows Mobile Settings has or shows it differently)
- Select 'Today'
- Select the 'Items' tab in Today
- Check 'Windows Default' and click OK in top right.
This will 'swap' out HTC Sense 'today' with Windows Mobile standard Today screen and voila you will have 'disabled' HTC Sense and you are back to using Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 version of Sense (not anywhere near as useful or neat-o to look at but hey they are pretty happy with it )

Just by disabling Sense is not going to make it work. I had this problem with my HD2 also and without using Sense it seemed to be working (there were fewer crashes), but only for few days. My HD2 was getting worse day by day - it was not crashing only if it was not touched (it was crashing just cycling between Sense tabs or by initiating a call).
At repair center they told me (after three weeks of waiting) that the motherboard must to be changed.
Is it possible to damage it by flashing custom ROMs?
For me, this problem appeared after just one month of usage. I was flashed some custom ROMs.
Now, I have a new HD2 but I'm affraid to flash a custom ROM (at least in the near future).
I have my HD2 back. Took me 2 weeks, the repair center changed the motherboard and got an new IMEI.
Now all is working, no more stuck at bootlogo.
But i'm on stock rom (1.66) with 2.07 radio. No way to run Android with this radio. Hmm...

I'm afraid as well to flash any custom rom now. For Android i need to HSPL and flash a 2.08 radio or greater to use it. But i'm stick on stock rom for sure.
I want to know as well if it possible to damage it by flashing customs roms ?
As i stated earlier, i flashed plenty of roms, doing task 29 etc., in the end stuck on bootlogo.
Thanks for the feedback on your repairs axman79 and Kalip. Btw, aside from courier cost there and back, did you have to pay the $30 'triage' fee or whatever they call it? Also, did they challenge your observations at all or did they just replace motherboard without question?
Yah, disabling Sense hasn't stopped my HD2 from crashing eith. Without using Sense it crashed several times while using Opera and more than a few times while syncing over the past three days. Also, it still gets stuck on reboot often, requiring battery to be removed for few minutes before rebooting.
So, guess I will send my HD2 in for RMA repair too (and wait for up to 3 weeks) and hope I get a functioning device in return.
Interesting though I didn't flash my HD2 but it went from 'good' to 'bad' in similar way that your two HD2's. From reading other posts around here on XDA and elsewhere it appears that HD2 motherboards fail with surprising frequency and for variety of reasons.
Would be nice to know if HD2 motherboards are unusually delicate and something physically breaks, or if there is some electrical operation, eg charging it on USB or unusual combination of button pushes that shorts something out?
The fact that battery has to be removed for few minutes in order to get thing to reboot hints that something requires charge to dissipate eg a component somehow 'locks up' which causes crash, and needs to be discharged by removing battery?

hey guys. I am so glad I found this post! I have exact same issues ith my HD2, it's driving me nuts.
I kept sort of log and described my problems in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712729
I think I have to send my HD2 for replacement or repair.
Can you please tell me how can I get my phone fixed/replaced?
I got the US T-Mobile version, but I don't have account in T-Mobile. Can I deal directly with HTC? Where do I have to call to get RMA number etc.
I would greatly appreciate your help!

Hello all, I have decided to catalog all of the missing icons and rebooting issues into one spot as I have just received a new phone from Toshiba because my old phone repeatedly rebooted upon boot... and now my new phone is repeatedly rebooting upon boot, which is the same thing that my old phone did! Also, I can't remember how I solved the "missing icons from programs installed on SD card problem" but I have that same problem again. Now, I live in Japan, I have tried most of the radios, could living in Japan cause my phone to reboot? Like could the radio when it is trying to connect to the tower not like the signal and then fux up n' reboot? I need help, I know Kevin P. White played around with this issue, I know that most of the people on this board had this issue at one time or another. Any ideas friends?

Rebooting Issue
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=648809
I tell you, if someone can help me with the rebooting issue, it would be so much appreciated. It is so frickin’ annoying to have the phone just almost boot up, then freeze for about 2-3 minutes before rebooting, then it will do this 3-4 times before it is stable. Someone else has to have this problem as I just got a brand spankin' new phone from Toshiba, and I still am experiencing the same problems that I did before. Thank you,
What the hell am I doing wrong? It must be my fault right?... I mean... There is no way that two phones from Toshiba could be having the same problem, so what am I doing that very few other people are doing?
I have tried using all of my stupid skills to come up with a solution, but... no avail. I need help.

PS: I will fix this problem, this post will catalog all of the known issues and fixes with this device, I can promise you, I will fix this basterd.
[UPDATE] - Trying one of FFBOY's roms [ROM][ENG]FFBOY'S WM6.5 21914+Manila 20161332!Radio5005.1700.05!8/8 - I read in one of those posts that he uses a different SD Card driver. Will report back later.
[UPDATE2] - It is later now, I do not have an SD card problem anymore, FFBOY's rom has definitly solved that issue, however, the rebooting problem still persists. It will begin to boot, just past the splash screen, then freeze for 10seconds to 2minutes depending upon the barametric pressure at that time... ehheeh.. **** ... i donno.. but.. anyways.. if someone can help me with the rebooting problem, that would be much apreciated. Ok, so I have done the following, I have removed the SD card and the SIM card but it still freezes/reboots 2-3 times before loading windows. Anyone else here having the same issue?
The solution to all these issues is simple : Don't install your applications onto the SD Card.
Once you've moved everything into the phone memory, you'll find it all works much better !
What about the cycle boot freeze problem? Oh man, I would give anything to have my stupid phone boot properly!... Again, it will freeze 2-3 times, then it will boot properly, it doesn't matter if there is no sim card and/or sd card installed at the time. Anyone experienced this?
Hi Kilihari! I had a similar problem with my TG01. I'm not firm in programming windows mobile, so I can't give you an advice in this direction...
but when that occured on my TG (plus freezing phone when press slightly on the backside of it), I sent it to the Toshiba-service partner for warranty - and got it back, still having the same problem -freezing after light pressure on the back-cover and independent from that (occured before) recycling boot (only 30% of the boot-trials worked properly). So I recorded a video with the problems and sent it back to Toshiba service the next day...
The result: My phone received a new motherboard, new IMEI etc. Which one of the two faults was the cause for replacement...i don't know, but maybe the recycling boot is rather a hardware-fault-caused problem than software-caused...
Good luck in finding a solution!

i ther, I have not had a problem with rebooting but I do get the missing icons quite a lot.
I find that using Sense roms is fine, I assume that while Sense is loading the system has more time to scan the sd card and load the icons. But this has a knock on effect on both memory and battery life.
I did find a rom somewhere (cant remember which one) which had a very lengthy boot/startup animation and the icons appeard fine. But it took a while to load so I changed this to a more traditional logo and the icons dissapeared.
I uninstalled this but the icons never came back and I did read that by changing the startup wait times this could also fix the problem so I tried experimenting and trashed my TG01 and I had to hard reset to clear and since then I have not 'experimented' since.
If someone has some spare time on their hands and dosent mind all the reboots they may find an answer but in the end I had to make customised icons and use JWD icon changer
Thanks guys for your help, I am sending my phone back to Toshiba, I will do this up again, I will pay for it, I don't care, I got to get this fixed.
Good luck and keep us posted
Problem Solved!!!!
Good news.
So I decided to give it one last shot, to try just one more time to get my phone working properly. I turned it on and preformed a “Master Clear” on my phone, stock Toshiba ROM freshly downloaded from their website, just to give it one more shot. I didn’t want to take out my SIM card from my secondary ASUS phone so I just took the pre-paid “Pay-as-you-go” SIM card from Softbank Mobile here in Japan (we use it sometimes when we have company over from Canada). A very interesting thing happened... right from the very beginning, I noticed that my phone was much more responsive and stable, I noticed that it didn’t freeze or reboot. It was perfect. The radio for the Japanese Docomo T01a is 5005.1901.1.20 which must make it possible for it to work with Japanese SIM cards, of course the new radio for UK Orange is 5001.0001.76. My "pay-you-go" SIM card looks like the previous generation's SIM, whereas my official Softbank SIM card looks newer. Anyways, the pay-as-you go SIM works, well the other SIM worked too, but this time my phone doesn't reboot, IT IS STABLE!!!! Meaning my phone is good. If anyone would like me to go further and take some photos of the SIMs, I can, just so if anyone encounters this problem ever again, we now have some additional information for the people in this community. If someone is experiencing the same problem as I am, you can just get a pay-as-you-go card or use a different carrier’s card and it might work, but the rebooting at boot and random freezes are not caused because of defect in my phone.
WoW.... I can't believe after a year and a half of pain, misery, and suffering, that it all came down to a stupid pay-as-you-go SIM card... also, my phone still froze without a SIM card in it, but after I had put in the pay-as-you-go SIM card, then it froze one more time, but the second time it booted, and then after it booted properly, then it has been good ever since, even without a SIM… now it is good. I can't believe this... honestly can't believe this. Even if it reboots once a day, there is no problem with that, but it has been totally stable... holy ****.... holy crap, it hasn’t rebooted in a whole DAY!!!! Moral of the story, buying a phone from a different country has issues related to it. EHEEHHEEHH.. Ummm... weirdest thing, ok, so, it seems like the pay-as-you-go card updated something in my phone or, allowed something to update. Then I put in my normal SIM card and all is good. When my phone starts to act funny, then I pop back in the pay-as-you-go SIM card for a minute, then turn off my phone and then put back in my normal Softbank SIM card. WOW!!
Also, Supbro's iContacts, iDialer, GreenButton and Ashiqiqbal's Host v1.5 are awesome programs... I feel like a kid in a candy story who has been held back savoring the sweet smells of the candy for over a year, I am now just installing program after program on this phone, just playing with things, eating all the candy!

Hi All,
This thread will serve many purposes.
As some of you might have noticed I was absent on these forums for about 3 weeks now. I have just logged in today with a LOT to reply to in different threads. I will try to reply to all those threads as I go along this weekend, but will start off here.
I had presented earlier my issue of TG01 freezing. I could not solve it. No solution was to be found. I contacted Orange, they agreed to replace it for a 'refurbished' handset. Happy days (or so did I think!).
Next day a refurbished handset was sent out. I noticed no issue with it and after 30 minutes or so, it froze! Restarted and froze again! All I could do was call Orange from my landline, explain them the issue - I suspected it was either my SIM card or my SD card - and so did they. So I tried to remove everything and only insert battery and start my phone. Shockingly, it froze and restarted! However, Orange call centre did nothing but blame me on inserting a faulty SD card in first place!
After about an hour's arguements and explainations, they agreed to send me another replacement - this time again refurbished and I agreed on NOT inserting anything but battery to it when it arrives. Next day I just inserted my battery. To my horror, phone froze again giving me an error 'Problem occured with Shell32.exe' - so I called Orange and told them about this when my phone had repeated the process of freezing and restarting for about 4-5 times. Again, they went through diagnostic tests, asked me if I inserted my SD card or SIM card and I said 'No I din't' - so I was told the phone my act this way because of my SIM not in my phone - I should always let TG01 recognise the SIM else it will freeze - That statement MADE NO SENSE to me, but I did as I was told. Nothing worked. So they agreed on sending handset replacement -3 !!
Cutting the long story short - I have had handset replacements - 5 by today!! And all of them froze with or without SIM, SD card! One of the customer service rep did point out that it might be the 'faulty handsets' that were being refused by customers in earlier sales (I presume he meant when SD card issues were found with 6.1 ROMS). All these 5 replacements have proved that it's definitely from Orange's handset side that the fault is re-appearing.
Based on the comment by cust. serv. rep, I am assuming it could be:
a) Firmware issue?
b) Hardware issue?
Now, I haven't researched enough, but in earlier phase, was there an issue with actual hardware? Did Toshiba change anything after those 6.1 call quality and freezing issues? As far as I knew all they did was give us an update with better radio and better OS. Please correct me here!
Could these phones be freezing due to bad flash from Orange's side? Could it be due to faulty radios? I have tried flashing my own ROMs as well as those cooked by others in this forum, but haven't been able to test any as even with cooked roms the phone froze!!
I called about 2 hours ago, and Orange have offered me - DMR (Different Model Replacement) as they think it's TG01 that is causing problem. Guess what did they offer me? A LG GT505 - heard of that? No? Well, neither had I! They said this is THE ONLY phone that is CLOSEST in the market to the specifications, cost and make of TG01 - this made me burst with laughter and anger!! How ignorant is that! I argued for 2 hours going point by point what our TG01 has and what LG doesn't! But all in vain, and there was no compensation offered, no discount on line rental offered, but only a straight question - do you want this LG phone or not?
I haven't been able to use my phone for more than 12-15 minutes constantly in last 3 weeks and sadly I don't think I would be able to for few more months. I don't have the heart that will let me swap TG01 for LG GT505!
In summation after this LONG rant, all I am saying is -
a) I won't be able to release any more ROMs - I was working on three of them.
b) I will be happy to support any developments I have committed to as of now - but I won't be able to test them. So they will all be 'BETA'
c) I won't be able to share this TG01 device for development solely because it's unfit for any sort of testing or development as of now.
d) I am happy to continue finishing my three roms I have been working on since last release and also help in further TG01 development as far as there are enough BETA TESTER who are ready to test them on their device with their own responsibility.
e) This might be my unexpected good-bye to TG01, but not to the community I hope (well, only till I sort out some money for another second hand TG01 that might work on Orange)
f) PLEASE PLEASE Don't go for Orange for any contracts - Especially if you expect to fall in love with your device!
Any suggestion, comments that might help me deal with Orange or come out of this misery, are most welcome.
I am sorry for not being able to respond to your queries (in my PM) and to your posts in various threads - am on it now!

No!
They sent me '5' times refurbished unit - different unit. Not mine one that was fixed. I was keepint track of IMEI number as I read somewhere on forums about their dodgy dealings. So it was different IMEI number each time i.e. different device - but same problem!
Only thing common was - it was 'updated to 6.5' by Orange.
Glad to have you back on the forum Drupad !
Dont forget to Hard Reset after a ROM Flash! Or after you first recieve it. thatis appaling from Orange. Demand a NEW phone. Not a refurbished. Also that LG is no where near to the TG01 standard. it has only HVGA screen, resisitive touch screen, 600mhz. They call that a worthy tg01 compeitor? I heard a while back they were offering HTC heros. But stay on this forum, don't leave us! haha.. Hope you get your problems solved mate.

I suspect that "refurbrished" units are simply damaged or rather bricked units returned by other users and Orange did not do anything with them.
Maybe You should contact Toshiba UK like user 'El Diablo' http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11076193&postcount=30

I was so pissed off and mental exhausted - I have had 3 sim card replacements (at first even after me shouting that it's not SIM, it's my phone - they wanted me to 'try' sims) and then 5 handset replacements. After I got each of these items my problem persisted so I called 'technical support' to sort me out - but even after nearly 90 to 120 minutes of diagnostic tests daily, all they did was send out 'another' sim or phone! This just drained me and since I could not even use it as a phone, let alone development - my absense to this forum!
I will try to be back and answer most generic queries which won't need use of my TG01, as I won't rely on my TG01 for now till I know it's fixed!
BTW, they think LG GT505 is THE ONLY competitor of TG01 or I should pay £495 + agree to another 24 months contract and get the phone of my choice! - how convenient.

I have already wrote an email to Toshiba UK and Orange Executive Office last night, and will hope to get some feedback on how to resolve the issue somewhere in next week. I very much agree to your doubt that at Orange it's been 'overlooked' - they make it shiny and nice looking but original fault in the handset is not resolved at all.
i.e. two handsets had issues with speakers - probably customers returned them due to bad speakers.
one handset had loosly aligned or highly damaged screen and if I press at the bottom of screen, my top bar was automatically responding - even screen alignment din't help!

That is appalling.. I've always been dissapointed wig Orange customer support. They are not techinical at all. What about that replacement TG01 you said you were getting.? Have you received it yet? You could check if it has problems with it. I hope the executive of Orange will compensate you for the trouble. I would day a brand new TG01 + cash compensation. They shouldn't be supplying faulty devices. I hope it all goes well for you.. Best of luck!
Hi Drupad2drupad
II know how you feel, I ditched Orange years ago and I am on Pay as you go and get my handsets from http://uk.webuy.com/ grade B or grade A
Anyway my TG01 also freezes a lot and occasionally will not switch on at all so this is what I have found.
If you are using the original 8Gb card supplied with the TG01 from Orange then buy a new one as there are loads of posts of people reporting corruption on those cards.
I say this because when my TG01 refuses to switch on I have to take out both my sim card and sd card then run a scandisk on the card from my laptop then my TG01 will boot (no errors reported from scandisk)
Secondly I have found nearly all the 6.5.3 or 6.5.5 roms keep freezing on me, or my TG01 wont wake up. 6.5 is quite good and I have never had a freeze using 6.1
So my advice just to see if your TG01 will work is to get a decent card first and download the stock Orange rom and flash using this then hard reset then download FFBoys 6.1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=679530 and when this completes do a hard reset again and see how this works
Remember to ensure your battery is 100% first.
I know you will not want to stay on 6.1 but if this works then your TG01 is probably ok and go from there.
Keep us posted and good luck.
### EDIT ###
Just remembered...
Someone (cant recall who) made a blank or empty rom for the TG01 especially for users suffering problems after flashing. Once loaded you have to re-flash using the pin method but I remember the developer saying something like 'as this is empty it will case your TG01 to reformat its internal memory' as 'fragmented' memory (I think that's what they called it) caused the reflash to not correctly overwrite the memory
This causes problems as other users for different devices agree about the factory rom first then custom rom afterwards.

I don't know why I ended up renewing my contract with Orange in first place! Oh I know, because ONLY orange sold this lovely TG01s!!
They don't talk anything more than what it says on their screens! Even the 'technical support' isn't technical! Probably a newbie on XDA can give out more details than that!
Yes I received that handset same day. The executive office - NO REPLY. Toshiba Europe, asked me to send this phone to Toshiba repair centre - however, this will cost me if it's not included in Orange 'warranty'. So I called Orange and they warned me NOT TO send it to anyone at Toshiba or anywhere else directly and bloated some legal lines to me! = I have no phone now! They are still on about the same thing - take the LG GT505 - it's BETTER than TG01.
So far - Orange cust service - not ready to even wave off my line rental for the days I haven't used my phone at all (since mid Jan till today - appox 22 days and I have successfully sent 12 text msgs and used 2 minutes 28 seconds of talk time!!) - reason being - rest of the hours it's freezing, restarting!
Orange exec office - no one has bothered replying, but when I called, the number doesn't seem to be answered at all!
Toshiba - thinks the handset that behaves this way is 'faulty' and needs to be sent to repair centre to 'confirm' and 'repair' - but with £20-£40 of charges involved even if phone isn't repaired!

I have at numerous occassions already tried to use (more than 5 different handsets) without any SD card inserted - not mine, not theirs - and it still freezes - So I reckon it's not the SD card issue, but I so wish it was and then at least it would be solved!

All the ROMs I have used and I have cooked - mostly have been 6.5.3 or 6.5.5 - and I have never faced any issues before. However, I have tried flashing 6.1 FFBoy's ROM, stock rom 6.5, orange debranded by aragon, orange debranded by kevinpwhite and all of my roms, few miroms - but it freezes irrespective of what rom i flash - I have even hard reset my phone i.e. vol up + power + camera exercise.

This in particular sounds very new and exciting to me - and might work, however all the searches I have done in google and XDA - gave me no results for blank or empty TG01 rom. Do you mean a clean rom or a stock rom? If so I have tried that

Cant find that blank/zero rom but I know I've seen it somewhere around here but it was nearly 9 months ago (not sure when it was originaly posted)
If I come across it I will let you know, unless any other members can remember this?
Toshiba 6.5 Rom
Not sure if this helps but I installed the 6.5 rom from the Toshiba site as soon as it came available, as a legit download and have had no issues with freezing at all.

So here I am!
Sent an email to the executive office - someone called me back today.
Guess what? They offered me EXACTLY same offers that the call centre offered me and I quote their last line:
"Orange can only offer you LG GT505 as different model replacement - as this is VERY similar to TG01 phone you want. You can either agree to take it or use the current TG01 which you are not happy with. We will no longer encourage discussion"
I am gobsmacked and have no idea what to say!
However, I have asked them to put this in writing in response to my email and have said I will be taking up to Trading Standards as they should not be sending out 'replacement handset' which keep freezing at first place!
She replied: "Yes that's fine, I will respond to your email, but we cannot be held liable if you are not happy with your handset"
After that we have been emailing each other till today. There are string of emails where we cannot solve this issue. I have been told, they won't offer me compensation because I have used their services. Obviously I have used services, by borrowing phones from friends, finding Orange compatible old phones and inserting my SIM inside. How can they expect the customer to NOT use the SIM even though he is paying the line rental for this phone!
They also claimed that Orange Line rental is for the airtime and not the handset- which clearly isn't true - else iPhone, Windows Phone 7 and Nokia 3200 would all be sold on a price plan at same price!! They still claimed it's got nothing to do with handset. If I am not happy with the quality of replacement TG01, as a good will gesture they will offer me 'LG GT505' and no other phone. I take it or leave it. I raised the complaint to CISAS - but was told that since it's an equipment fault they won't get involved. They adviced me to contact consumer direct or trading standard. I opted for trading standard who asked me to contact consumer standard first then trading direct if it's unresolved.
I contact consumer direct and they think under the Sales of Good Act, I should be allowed a working replacement and if that doesn't help then I should be given compensation - So I am going to write to Orange with all these and see what is the response and then I have been adviced to take this to small claims court.
Phew, all this for a working TG01! Don't I just love my TG01!
By the way technical guys out there:
I have been able to find a work around - If I keep my phone in flight mode for about 60-65 minutes after a soft reset and then remove flight mode - it doesn't freeze for 5-6 hours!! If I do a soft reset, don't keep it in flight mode, then it freezes every 10-12 minutes!
Obviously I have a work around now, but why should I keep my phone switched off for 60 minutes every time!! - Does anyone have a reason behind why it happens like this? Could it be something to do with network? SIM? (I have had 3 SIM replacements already)? Battery? It's definitely not memory card, as I have nothing in that slot.
Anyone with any ideas or experience is more than welcome to help me

Nice to see you back with a TG01 What ROM are you using? its strange how many phones have the same issue. Like you said, it could be a SIM card problem. but do you also have 4 different batteries? test them all out individually?
hope you get it sorted soon mate!
Possible solution? I've just been reading back through your OP, and i realised i had a similiar problem like this. i was using WM6.5 for a long time, with no problems.but i used spb backup and switched to 6.1. when restored contacts on 6.1 my phone would freeze and lock up like the problems that you described.. I always thought it was a problem with the ROM but it was actually my backup manager. i remember installing apps, syncing with exchange would freeze the phone. i also remeber spb shell didn't load up. i found a solution, by using PIM backup. now everything works 100%. what backup manager did you use? try pim backup! also did you sync with activessync? that may be a problem. try restoring your contacts with PIM backup!

Hmm , interesting. It seems that problem is with radio. I gues that if You switch radio off ( in fact flight mode does it ) , Your phone will never freeze.
You were changing roms ( and SIM cards too ) so we can rather exclude software ( radio versions ) unless You always had the same radio version ?
Conclusion can be rather unpleasant because it can points to hardware ( GSM module ) problems. I hope I am wrong.
BTH. What will happen if we boot up system without SIM card ? Any radio software and hardware should work but will the phone freeze too ?
SIM card reader is part of radio hardware too and we can not exclude it has problems.

Nice to see you back with a TG01 What ROM are you using? its strange how many phones have the same issue. Like you said, it could be a SIM card problem. but do you also have 4 different batteries? test them all out individually?
hope you get it sorted soon mate!

haha, not back yet oly! this TG01 is only good for about 4-9 hours a day, the rest of the time it goes mental on me! I am trying to sync my sleeping patterns with the phone - which I should be doing after paying fortune to Orange! (line rental + insurance!)

I wish this was my case too!
I am using PIM back up too. But the whole issues comes here: As soon as I get a fresh handset from Orange, I don't do anything but put my battery inside it and start. Leave it on my desk, literally stare at it. And it starts acting weird even without the SIM card inserted inside it!! I am still using the official Toshiba 6.5 ROM as I din't dare to flash anything with this freezing issue after i replaced 2 hansets (this is my 5th one!). I am just worried if it freezes while flash, I might end up bricking my phone - I have only installed my PIM contacts till date - nothing else. No apps no reg tweaks nothing! And I am using (whenever it's not frozen) the laggy crappy TG01's official UI - *sigh* regret being with Orange!

Hi, thanks for quick response! I am thinking it could be radio too, but it freezes even without inserting the SIM card. I have tried using different SIM card in it, but it still freezes. So I think we can safely eliminate SIM being an issue. I had flashed ROMs in first 2 handsets, but in last 3 I only used TG01s default rom. GSM module - is something I din't think of. But what are the chances that a whole lot of phones (5 TG01s) sent to me had issue with GSM modules?!
Is there a way to solve radio issue i.e. have something like virtual flight mode? where phone will think it's in flight mode, but SIM is active?

Pure statistics and speculations
As I remember , phones that Orange was sending to You were refurbrished. How do You know :
1) They were refurbrished at all.
2) Even if theoretically they has been fixed ( were in any repair center ), a man
responsible for it was never waiting untill it will freeze. Simply switched phone on, looked it works and switched it off. After such "test" they returned to Orange.
On the other hand, maybe GSM module damage is most "popular" on our tg01 ( excluding pure mechanical ). We do not know any data concerning how many damaged tg01 went to Orange back and why.

Hi,
Can anybody help me with this? My gps keeps failing. A reboot sometimes works, I've tried running quick gps but this makes no difference, Sometimes it will reboot itself after it fails (sometimes repeatedly!!) normally when using copilot 8. It doesn't seem to be an issue with copilot as google maps and chartcross gps also fail to work.
rom htc 3.14.405.2(04666)wwe date 29/09/2010
radio 2.15.50.14
protocol 15.42.50.11U
os 5.2.21913(21913.5.0.94)
many thanks
Does it fail in all usage situations (indoor, outdoor)?
Do you use Quick GPS?
Did you try another Radio ROM?

Yes
Yes
No, I've not changed radio.
I tried again last night. Co pilot worked for a minute or so then lost gps, then "gps back, determining position..." then rebooted itself, repeatedly and did freeze on boot up once. I soft reset it and tried google maps, it found no sats and rebooted itself, tried again and it was ok for about 10 minutes on copilot then I had finished my journey... It's infurating I do know! Would it be worth trying a different radio as I've not changed it from stock and it's only recently benn misbehaving?
It's still misbehaving... Is there anything in the registry that might cause it?
This may be a bit too drastic, but a hard reset can rule out the registry as the culprit.
I'm trying to avoid a hard reset if I can. I'd have to reinstall the modified rom if I did wouldn't I? (from htc website)
This is really getting me down now... Last night co-pilot worked for 10 minutes then without warning or apparent loss of gps phone rebooted, then without opening any apps or even touching it, it rebooted itself 4 times. I'm thinking a hard reset has got to be tried..
Forgive my ignorance, but if I hard reset will I have then to reinstall the updated rom and patches I installed from htc late last year to remedy daylight saving issues etc and will I be able to reinstall paid for software from marketplace without buying again?
Can anyone help please?
I've read about the rebooting problem with other users. This was caused by bent battery pins.
Did look at those?
thanks. battery pins look fine to me. i will try a hard reset, i'm just wondering if i can reinstall my paid for marketplace software or will i have to buy again and i presume i will have to reinstall htc patches and updated rom after hard reset. please forgive my ignorance. it threw a fit this morning too. i switched it to silent for an hour whilst at a funeral and when i came out battery was totally discharged. it was about 90% beforehand. it seems to be dying!!!!!!
Does nobody know, please?
i am sorry to say that ur problem is the same with mine, and i think its main board broblem,i open it and remove the gps part and then restart the phone, the same problem the phone keep freezing and restart it self,so i think its mainboard broblem,i bought another used hd2 ,and the old one for parts,

Thanks for the bad news but I think you may be correct.... I've hard reset it and the gps and rebooting side of things is exactly the same, but now it also seems to be eating the battery(COMPLETELY drained in 16 hours with approx 15 minutes of calls made and a brief use of copilot and googlemaps) and I've not installed any additional software or made any changes from "out of box" condition apart from reinstalling my contacts and the latest version of facebook.... It now also is not porting facebook profile photos into contact list even though I have recreated the links.... I have emailed htc but had no response from their "crack" support team as yet (it's only been 26 hours so far). I only got the HD2 in August last year so hope that it will be a warranty issue. I seem to remember people having issues with facebook contact photos but can't find the posts. Can anyone help??
Well, an update. After 3 months and the unit going back to the repair centre FOUR TIMES and a TWO replacement units I appear to have a working device again. HTC repair centre seem to be totally useless. I've had no info from them regards any repairs that have been carried out. Each time it went away for repair it was back within 4 days so very little testing was done.(I did find out on 1 repair the speaker and the wireless card were replaced....Why???) The first replacement unit took 2 weeks to arrive though and that had absolutely no gps.......The second replacement took 3 1/2 to arrive but so far the gps is ok but I still have no facebook profile photos in my contacts list....... Any ideas how to rectify this??
Hi guys.
My phone shuts down at random moments. I can boot it up again by holding the power button for about 10 seconds. Sometimes, not always, the phone feels hot and batterylife dropped. I have been struggling with this problem ever since i got this phone. I hoped to solve it with installing a new kernel and rom. I am now on Slimbean 3.1.0. The phone was initially on XLQ6 4.0.4. This didn't change anything, unfortunately.
I have also tried:
- removing external SD
- placing a new battery (which has no room to move, in case anyone suggests the battery might be moving)
- wiping caches
The strange thing is that my friend has bought his i9100 together with mine in the same order. He is also on XLQ6 and is experiencing the same issues. Less often than me, however.
My smalband is still on XLQ6. Is it possible that this causes my problems? Or is it more likely that my friend and me simply bought phones from a bad batch or something (hardware related)? I really don't want to send back my phone. That is my absolute last resort.
EDIT: Problem solved! Installing the application "Load Monitor" and enabling the "wake lock" function has done the trick. No more shutdowns or reboots!
Anyone?
2 devices with the same issue?
I'd be at the store where I bought it right now.
I will do that when I am absolutely sure that it is hardware related. However, if anyone has a potential solution I would really like to solve this issue myself.

Same with me. change from 4.0.4 WLPT to 4.0.4 WLPY but problem still presists.
Does anyone know if changing smalband (if that is possible?) could make a difference? Because that is the only similarity to the original state of my phone. A lot of AT&T users in the USA experienced the same problems also with 4.0.4. However, nobody can come up with a solution.

If it is heating near the camera, it's facing death soon.
If it is new and warranty isn't voided, why not flashing the carrier ROM and get a new one?

Because I don't like to lose my phone for a couple of weeks. And I prefer to fix these things myself. I have seen so many topics about this on XDA and Google. There must be a solution to it.
Is it possible that these problems are caused by my modem? That is the only unchanged thing since I have had this phone.
I might have found a possible solution. I've read something on a Dutch forum about sim-cards causing these issues. So I have placed a new sim-card and the problem hasn't appeared in the last 3 days. Before that, the problem was occuring about 3-6 times in one day. It's too early to say this has solved my problem, but it definitely made a difference so far. If it keeps functioning perfectly for the next couple of days I will close this topic.
Symptoms were merely reduced. Phone still shuts down approximately each 2 days. Much better than it was before though. Why would a sim-card change reduce, but not solve the problem? This is starting to hurt my brain.

You may experience sleep of death. What WiFi chipset do you have? I had the same issue on a Murata Wi-Fi chipset.
Yup, Murata chipset. I've googled some more on SoD. I have now installed an app called "Load Monitor" and enabled Wake Lock in preferences. This should prevent the phone from going into deep sleep, apparantly.
Some portugal carrier had a problem with lte sim card or something like that.
I really don't see how a sim card can actually mess with a phone.
Maybe the enabling of some features screws it up.

In my case Samsung Service Team replaced the motherboard. My new MB has a Samsung Electronics wifi chipset. Two weeks now and no SoD.
That sounds good. However, ever since I have installed Load Monitor my phone runs fine. It drains approximately 40% of my entire battery, but it lasts easily until the end of the day.
But again, I shouldn't get too excited. Sim-card change seemed to work in the first few days as well.
Will be continued...
It has been over a week since I have installed Load Monitor. My phone hasn't shut down once. Problem appears to be solved! I hope more people will read this topic, because I have seen a lot of desperate people during my search to a solution.
The only disadvantage is the battery usage of the application. I now have approximately 40-50% at the end of the day instead of 60-70%.
