[MOD] Enable NFC on your device! - Galaxy S II Android Development

This is a NFC enabler from fonzi09 that, well, enables NFC from your NFC-enabled Galaxy S2 (try saying that 5x quickly..). Note that YOUR GALAXY S2 NEEDS TO HAVE HARDWARE NFC SUPPORT, ergo: Your S2 must have a NFC chip inside, whether its a SIM mod, SD mod, or preinstalled. Almost all custom ROMs remove the perms and libs for NFC and this just puts them back where they belong. Capiche? Yea? Good.
All credits go to fonzi09 for this wonderful mod which I'm unfortunately not able to enjoy because I have a UK Orange Galaxy S2...

For those who have a i9100 you don't have NFC chip inside. You need Orange France's i9100 or i9100p for this to work. For those who still don't understand, watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmvCpR45LKA&hd=1

Which ROM are you using?
Nathan

Same problem but I'm using CheckRom.

Are you both sure you have the i9100P version with NFC? I also had this issue earlier on, its been a long afternoon but I'm sure it was solved by using the libpn544_fw.so from my original orange build.
Nathan

Hey guys I had a question I have asked before but noone seemed to have an answer... maybe you guys can... I have a i9100 and it didn't come with any nfc on it I believe... like the battery has it written on it etc... this doesn't...
so my question is, does anyone know if its possible to add nfc to this phone somehow...?? By maybe getting a nfc enabled battery or something...??

I think we need someone to be brave and try it!

Tried this on my SG2 and whilst the option is there, when I tap to activate it greys out which sadly means that my version does not have the NFC chip. it's a shame but never mind.

Same here build date october 2011

You need those microSD with NFC enabled eg the one that Visa is still rolling out in beta, or something similar. Or a SIM with NFC enabled.

So if I have an international sg2 that doesn't have nfc by standard, this will still work if I get the SD card with nfc??

I can do that with my mastercard, or is NFC something different.

Yep that's it! Using an app called Google Wallet. It's not been rolled out to the S2 yet, although there has been some success through side loading! I'll spend a few hours trying to get it up and running after Christmas

Honestly - not much. The killer app (Google Wallet) is a LONG way from working.
Passports only started including RFID within the past 2-3 years
The device will react to Citi PayPass MasterCards, but there's not much you can do with it
Same for many corporate access cards - my employee badge is an ISO whateverthestandardis smartcard - the phone reads it but can't really do much
There are places you can buy NFC tags to play with that you can program to launch tasks and such... Kinda neat but not particularly useful.
In general, since we only have one officially NFC-enabled phone in the country (Nexus S/NS4G), there isn't much interesting-for-Android NFC stuff out there.
If we can figure out how to get card emulation mode working that'll be a whole other story - but that is going to be VERY hard, if possible at all.
So entropy, we can't use PayPal with nfc?

That one's a REAL ***** to test, since testing it requires two NFC-enabled phones.

When an NFC enable phone detects, say, a credit card that has NFC, is there enough data to set up an NFC Launcher task specific to that card?
Also, what happens when multiple NFC tags are detected? Are they treated separately? Do they interfere with each other?

It would seem to me that NFC chips do active transmission, they aren't just RFID, so theoretically you shouldn't have two chips actively dumping their contents to the airwaves unless they've done a proper handshake with the reader.

It looks like most of the task launchers want to be able to write some data (NDEF?) to the tag. So they don't respond to a CC.
I have no writable tags to test with yet... I have a shipment coming from Identive that should be arriving tonight with some NFC Type 2 and Type 4 tags.
NFC is VERY short range so it's almost impossible to have multiple tags in range.
Can someone post the apps that currently work? It would be great to keep track since this is "new tech"
I have NFC Task Launcher working as well as NFC Quick Actions (which I installed from Amazon's app store).
I picked up a few of these.

I tried reading the RFID in my dog, but I either cant find it, or it isn't recognized.

Everything I've read indicates HomeAgain uses 125 kHz RFID - which is not compatible with NFC in any way, shape, or form. (NFC uses 13.56 MHz RFID)

Sorry I have no idea what you are asking here, you took an NFC technology????
Lol... I agree... what does that mean...?? I would also like to take nfc technology on my s2 if possible since mine isn't the Korean version...
Or maybe he is saying he got the Korean version... hmmmmm...
Sent from my Galaxy SII
I think he is saying that he got NFC version of S2 and asking for ROM compatibility.
i was thinking about whether to wait for NFC to hit all of SG2, or maybe getting one from the UK (had to wait for a while, since it was rumored they'll get there eventually) ... but eventually decided that even though it's a nice sounding feature, i can probably live without it, and just got mine
anyways, assuming you have a korean phone with NFC support, you think it won't work unless you have a ROM built specifically with that support?
i guess it'll take most roms out there out of the question ...
Sorry but maybe I expressed myself badly ... I bought the new i9100p which is the version with the NFC chip to shop (here in Italy this technology isn't coming soon ..: Mad. I wanted to know if you think the rom for the i9100 normal are compatible. until a short time ago I had the regular version and with the criskelo I was fine ..
I was going to try to get the nfc version myself but didn't due to this particular confusion whether its compatible or not...
Some people said that with the nfc version all it is, is the nfc chip which is installed in the back cover and the battery but the rest of the phone is essentially the same... if that's the case it should probably work... but again I can't say for sure... the model is still i9100, just adding the P... I think it should work... but I would suggest you maybe ask in the respective rom thread or maybe PM criselko himself and see what he says...

[Q] Confused if i have NFC

Hi,
I have been reading about NFC and it got me asking myself if it was in SG2
I know it is in some SG2s and after some reading I saw about the 4th battery connection is used for it
I have the 4th connection on both my SG2 and the battery (battery also states it has NFC) but I cannot seem to see any NFC apps in the market (like google wallet) .... I have also read it has to do if it is enabled in the rom
Phones a i9100 bought from honkong
So how can i check if it really has it?
Thanks,
If the hardware has it, then you have it!
Reason why you can't get Google Wallet because it is only within the US and on Nexus S phones.
I think only the korean and att version has nfc.

Negative. Just tried to scan my edy but no joy. My nexus S grabs it fine however. Cannot wait to dump this stupid docomo rom and get a vanilla one on. That or just go back to my Nexus S.
またSC-06DはNFCを搭載していないので、「Android Beam」を拡張したデータ転送機能「S Beam」も利用できない. Yep, no NFC.
SamMobile has a rom out for SC-06D. As soon as the DL finishes gonna give it a go since I tried the I9300 and it just black screens.
i seen that but i was pretty sure that was just the stock rom...which is really helpful if a bad rom is loaded and need to go back to stock...ive downloaded it too and keeping it to the side for emergencies....
The ability to root and throw CyanogenMod 9 on docomo's Galaxy S3 are the two most important factors in whether or not I will buy it in the next couple of months. Can you please keep us updated on your progress, wtfusernameistaken?

My honest opinion is that the phone sucks. No NFC, annoying uninstallable apps, battery gets quite warm, camera is meh, Kies is basically iTunes with a different layout. I went back to my nexus S and passed the S3 off to the wife. Tried to get a galaxy nexus but it would seem that it did so bad in Japan that they liquidated their entire stock 3 months ago. Guess I'll just have to wait for the next dev phone.
The rom on sammobile is in fact the stock rom, but good to have in case.
Your first sentence had me dying. Lol I guess that sums it up, though. I guess I'll start preparing to buy a One X, though I think I'm going to attempt to get the AT&T version and have it unlocked, as it seems that model is more liked than the international version. I don't even play Words with Friends, so Tegra 3, Schmegra 3 for all I care.
In my opinion this is a beast of a phone...nfc not there..it maybe just no unlocked..the screen is great..the 2gb is a major factor...the fact it'll be one if few phones to receive the jelly bean update..even the little tv tuner which I'm sure the statewide doesn't have..the massive support for it...the camera is great, even though some might choose a third party app...people are judging the phone after a few days of use...the real beauty and love affair comes after extended use...having all this potential and being a root and or custom Rom away from unleashing it is mouth watering...already my s3 out performs my s2 in every way...and it can only get better...every day I find or notice something about this phone that makes it more and more awesome...give it a chance and don't be so basis guys...

If you lack Japanese skills I would be hesitant to root. Some of the warnings that come up will not be in english. Not to mention that all the development on the root was done by Japanese and the "documentation" will be as well.
This is my first Android device (and my first post )
I found the amount of Samsung and Docomo apps really ridiculous.
I want to get CM9 onto the device, so I can have a completely clean slate with no remnants of all the shovelware. As I'm new, I don't know how yet, but I've found several guides and videos and such for doing it for other devices, even the other versions of the Galaxy S3. Unfortunately I haven't found too much specifically for the Docomo Japan version, so I'm a little hesitant to try anything just yet. Is there anything that makes the Docomo device different from other Galaxy S3's, anything I should look out for?
One thing to note for anyone else who bought it here in Japan at Docomo, by default they automatically sign you up for a ton of their crap, iChannel, BodyMo, etc., and each one costs monthly. They're very easy to forget about. If you go digging through the "my docomo" site, through the customer support stuff, eventually you'll find the options to cancel each of the stuff they signed you up for. They really do make it hard to get to.

Wallet for everyone? Google, oh you.

I just happened to be looking when this appeared....

If you go to the about screen it still says that tap and pay is "not available" for us. So I'm guessing we still can't use it for that. I wonder with this new version if it might be easier to get it to work though?

We are able to get the SE Sim Cards from Verizon. If that's the only thing stopping it from working, then that's a piece of cake. If and only if
Just confirmed that if you change your build.prop to a Tap and Pay supported phone like the Galaxy Nexus, it will then proceed to look for a Secure Element and wallet will not load. If you keep your stock build prob for your device it knows that it has no secure element and will just report back that Tap and Pay is not available. Pulled a log cat to confirm this. It returns that no SMX is available and will force close wallet after a certain amount of time.
I'm wondering if Google might of added the ability to look for Secure Elements on sim cards with this updated. Can anyone confirm that might have an NFC SE Sim card?
Bottom line is.... If we have no SE embedded on our phones, then NFC payments with Wallet are not a possibility.

I wonder if all it needs now to get SMX access is the nfc_access.xml file in /system/etc that contains the Google Wallet key, instead of just a Isis key. AFAIK, you can have both keys listed in the nfc_access.xml file. But if you don't have a NFC sim card, I guess you can't verify ...
If you feel like changing your build.prop again, maybe you could experiment with the nfc_access.xml file?

I was just looking at their thread for the new version and it doesn't even seem like you need to have xposed framework at all. Looks like all the flashable zip does is intall the Wallet.apk so you don't have to change your build.prop to get it from the market. Although it looks like people are having a tough time using the new version compared to the old version.

It's funny I installed the old wallet then a couple days later the new one came out and I wasn't going to switch it all over again. I'm running the hyperdrive rom and some people are hit and miss with tap to pay to work. I figured I would wait till someone gets it all hashed out and working flawlessly. There aren't very many pay pass places in Eugene Or. The only place I know of is toys R us.
