Confirmed: Camera API is incorrectly implemented on EVO 3D - HTC EVO 3D

So I don't know how many of you know but the camera app does not properly utilize the android API when you adjust exposure levels. I have been back and forth with HTC customer service for quite some time now and I finally got a response from corporate. They confirmed that the exposure setting is in fact not properly implemented. They said that "the whole model is currently under review" and I should expect an update in the future but they were not able to give an ETA.
I think it would be helpful if you guys hit up HTC's website as well and reported your dissatisfaction with the exposure dial. The more people they see complaining about this, the more likely it is that they will actually make it a priority.

I wondered why it never seemed to affect anything when I was adjusting it. That sucks. Hopefully that will be fixed in ICS.

I want them to also fire the guy who programmed the white balance & omitting ZSL.

Not a huge surprise.

No wonder the camera seemed subpar out of the box.
With a few adjustments, it is a little better though. Just fix the green hue and give us ZSL and I won't complain.

I still hate the fact we were lied to about 1080p

Sounds awesome Bro. Looks like it will be a Happy New Year present for some of us?

The camera truly is **** as it is now. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Yeah, it is really annoying because I just can't stand the camera on this phone. My older G2 had an amazing camera for a 5mp. I mean what is the solution for this? Its software related.

I would prefer this over the 3D. Sure, it's a nifty little gimmick...but...I know I won't get any mileage out of it. I don't have to use the 3D feature, I'm aware...I'd love to be blown away by it and love it, but, I doubt it.
...and I could give a **** about the 3mp difference on the camera, my crappy $99 point-n-shoot takes far better pictures by accident at its lowest MP setting than any phone camera yet...but mostly because the name Evo3D is so lame.
When people ask 'what kind of phone is that' I'm just going to say "Evo", cuz in the end most people are just going to follow that up with "one of those droids, right?" anyway...
EDIT: Besides, I'm sick of waiting... based on how this botched launch has gone we wouldn't see it until christmas anyway

1080p revisited

Actually, I'm speculating about a thread, 2 pms, and the Evo 3D I'm currently holding in my hand
And the battery comment is coming from a Sprint Manager who has been running the phone for the past 2 days and a Sprint Employee that's had it since yesterday morning.

Of an Evo 4G? While after the hacks and kernels came out I've had fantastic battery life to even suggest that nobody really had a problem with it is absolutely absurd.
But if the portrait 3D is true, well, I'll be thrilled... color me skeptical.
I'm headed to RS right now to see my pals, surely they have one in store. I need to get to the bottom of this and I don't care if you're at the top.
Mine does 720p only for recording. I didn't take the OTA, if that makes a difference?

Portrait 3D is true, with some caveats. To me, at least, the best viewing distance in landscape is about 12 inches. In portrait, it has to be about 20 - closer than that is blurry. However, if you zoom one of the 3D pictures, the 3D effect is broken. In portrait view, the widescreen photos are tiny. Since you can see them, and you have to view them from 2 feet, it's hard to see. But, they are definitely still 3D in portrait. So, there is some hope for a 3D portrait homescreen!

Go for it. I've been hearing mixed results for this as well, and I'm kind of confused as well. I won't be getting my 3D until this weekend (sad face haha), but I've been playing with a couple for the past few days thanks to some good friends. I'm wondering as well, since reviews about the camcorder have been mixed as well...This is very interesting.

Uh, if you are holding a 3D in your hand right now, why don't you just check the video settings right now?.
Also, how can you tell a video is in 1080p just by looking at it? It's a simple thing to confirm - check the properties of the file and take a look at the resolution.

Because I was in a Sprint store 10 minutes ago. I didn't think this was even a point of debate since I had been told by three different people it worked at 1080p. Since this thread has been started, I've been pm'ed by two people saying it doesn't do 1080p, and one more person saying I should stick to my story and that they have 1080p. I've updated the article to say this is still being debated. How in heck can people be confused about this? Just look in the settings -_-

That was more for the Portrait 3D since someone disagreed with one line of the article and through the childish "unbelievable" card.
I didn't check it because I didn't think it was a point of debate. I was told by two people that it recorded and there was no argument on here. Somehow people are still arguing here about whether or not 3D works in portrait, so I was really going to look at that.

I'd like to know how one can even tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on a screen that is only 540p?
Also, I'd like to you tune ESPN HD and then tune NBC HD and tell me if you can tell a difference between the two? Without googling it, which one is broadcast in 720p and which one in 1080i?

That's not the issue however. For months HTC has advertised 1080p recording, then last minute they changed it to only 720p. Sure it may not be noticeable to you or others, but we simply want what we were promised. That also implies that the phone is capable of recording in 1080p, but for some unknown reason, is being limited to 720p. Don't you want the full potential of your device?

I'm willing to bet the Evo3D's 1080p recording ability is on par with the Evo4G's 720p recording ability....
So the Evo3D has fantastic, cheap point-n-shoot quality for 720p video (which these days is impressive compared to what I grew up with costing thousands upon thousands of dollars)...and it's 1080p offerings were, well, paltry at best.....and we all know what happened when the evo4g's 720p recording didn't pan out as expected....(though my biggest problem with it was that ****ty AMR audio codec, but I digress)....
...we'll probably be able to open this up and be able to enjoy the lack-luster jumpy low-framerate 1080p that we were originally promised.
From a "principals" point of view, yeah, I'm offended.... but from a technical and practical point of view? It's a good decision on their part.
Now, If I were head of their hardware development department I would employ the same tactic I use at my technical job where "quality" (being a moving target depending on the person) is critical.... employ "expectations management"....where you under promise and over deliver...then everybody is always capable of providing the desired output and everybody is always impressed with what results.
Does this excuse their professional responsibility to deliver on promises? No, not at all, but perhaps for some of you it can help explain it.
some facts from some one with a 3d. As it comes it does not do 1080p. I have not taken the ota and there is a update for the camera in it. I would bet the its enables the 1080p so that's the difference. Also the ota is automatic after activation you have to cancel it so the two different stories.

Own multiple evo3ds ?

if so.. has anyone noticed the difference in white color balance between the screens?
i am on my 2nd evo and def noticed the whites are difference. others have mentioned this too..
can someone who owns multiple and is able to see the difference post up some pics with full brightness and auto?
i asked this in QA but seems nobody is able yet.. maybe better luck here?
thanks!
My dad has one and I have one. They both look the same, which they both share a warm temp rather than a cool temp.
Wonder why we still don't see options for adjusting the color on our screens. Would love to have the ability to do this.
I definitely noticed a color difference from my EVO when I first powered it on. I am over it though. Not a big deal.
I have 3 of them. All are 003 hardware (check that as people have said they have 002) and all look exactly the same. I don't see the yellowish tint people are talking about, I think the screen looks better than the NS4G(difference is the look of the colors to me). From about an 80degree angle from the phone I can still see the screen clearly enough to read the time or see a text if Im close enough(<---- has bad eyes).

Well guys.. i just went to the sprint store.. seems its a mixxed bag of bull**** here..
lets start back from the Evo4G.... epson vs novatec.
well, its the same thing with the 3D's.. not sure who the vendors are but the first evo 3d i got had a perfect looking screen.. crisp and clear.. i later returned it due to the random lockups.. the 2nd evo i got had a much warmer screen, the whites were off and it didnt look as sharp..
so today i went to the sprint store and compared it to the demo's.. one of them was like the my original , clean clear bright whites, and the 2nd one was like the current one i have, and makes the one i own look like a knockoff when it comes to white color and clarity.
keep in mind, both evo's looks just fine, but once compared side by side, you will wish you had the better looking one.
so i called telesales and they are sending me a new one. I deserve to have what i believe is the better of the 2 screens. hopefully, this new one will be like the first one.

auto white balance

My auto white balance was really bad. I returned my 3vo and got replacement. That one had the green camera as did the next. This one has the auto white balance problem (purple people and red skin tones when outside) AND a tilted screen, AND specs under the screen, AND reboots! Obviously I'm returning it tomorrow, but my question goes like this. If I get another one with green screen or white balance issues, can it be fixed by a software update/developer? Or is it hardware?

Software. That is if you are talking about the camera white balance.
Appreciate my help? Thank me
Look here...

Shouldn't have returned the phone because of a software issue in the first place.
If your phone is randomly rebooting and you haven't installed any unusual apps , return it at once, it is likely a hardware defect.
The poor camera white balance issue is a software problem and can likely be fixed with improved software.
Should we be writing emails to HTC and sprint about this? This is the only gripe I have about my phone. Maybe if brought to their attention, multiple times, they will fix it.

I think we should, but I know they probably will do nothing about it. I expect HTC will fix it all at some point but I think the community released ROMs will fix the problems even before HTC does.
I don't understand why HTC is so bad about properly optimizing their software (Sense), providing a GPU accelerated UI, proper camera software, etc. Aside from the pretty looking effects of sense, it is pretty much unoptimized overweight garbage software.
I'm really glad we will be getting custom roms on this phone, it will show the true power of the underlying hardware, something which HTC failed to do IMO.
Just buy a sg II...

Email sent and goes as follows.
Dear sir or madam,
I've recently purchased one of your products (the HTC EVO 3d), and can honestly say that it is by far the best phone I have used yet. However, the camera (2d or 3d) is by far one of the worst I've seen on any device, including my previous phone, the EVO 4g. I have experienced a green and purple tint in low light situations and purple flesh tones in actual sunlight. These situations are consistant with every photo. I at first thought, "this phone must be defective", so I exchanged it for a new replacement. Long story short, I'm now on my fourth replacement phone and going in for my fifth tomorrow. Every one of these phones has had the same issue. Purple and green everywhere. As one of the main features of this phone are the dual 5mp cameras, needless to say, I'm extremely disappointed in the sub par quality. I was told by a very trusted source that the issue of the painfully low quality of the camera could be resolved by a software revision/update. If this is so , please do not hesitate to look into and fix this issue. If it is a hardware issue, I don't understand why you would put such terrible hardware in this phone. I've seen the quality of the camera on other handsets (such as the mytouch 4g and the thunderbolt), and was very, very impressed. As I am not the only one with this issue, I would think that this could do nothing but hurt your reputation as the top android handset distributor. if you cannot fix this issue on existing handsets, could you please let Me/the public know so we can better compare the 3d to other handsets before purchasing?
I would rather not permanently return my phone for a competitors handset, but like many others I've spoken with, I will if need be. Hope to hear a definitive answer from you soon.
I Thank you and await

Okay, everyone that wants to talk about jumping ship, do all of us die hard Evo 3D users a huge favor and keep your discussions in this thread. Might be a good way to keep general less cluttered (or not if everyone decides to make their own topic)
Good idea. While I think there should be a spot to talk about all the new Androids coming out, there doesn't need to be a billion threads about each phone.

1. It's already been proven that high MP count doesn't always mean better quality pictures. It's better for higher resolution images but ultimately quality will be determined by sensors and components as well as compression used.
2. While the on screen buttons is somewhat understandable, having a honeycomb tablet myself you get quite used to it. Also It's a moot point because apps will be able to hide them if they so choose to utilize the whole screen.
3. I'm surprised no one has made any comments about the actual possibilities of this device. We all know at some point every carrier will get one but I'm sure most people expected Sprint to get one next year after they roll out LTE. Granted they could get an CDMA/LTE model with the LTE being inactive until it goes live ala what Verizon did with some of their mobile hotspots. It's also possible there is an unnanounced Wimax variant. What people tend to forget about is location. It was announced in Hong Kong and those variants were for that market and part of the world. It happens often with most products. They announce the ones that have reference to their location and then it's up to the branches in the other parts of the world to confirm or release their own information.
Either way it's a sleek and interesting phone. Not leaving my 3D but definitely looking forward to ICS.
I watched that youtube video and it appears this phone has the same "plasticy" build as some of the other galaxy phones.

I had the SGS2 also and took it back for the 3d.
For a lot of people jumping ship is only because of falling support for some devices. I understand the frustration about s-off on all the later Hboots. Even if Team Revolutionary would tweet if they are continuing support for these or not would be of great value to so many. If Htc phones become harder for people to s-off there will be a natural move over to other devices that Devs spend more time on like the Samsungs are getting. I have sold my Evo 3d because s-off on Hboot 1.49.0013 seems highly unlikely.
Htc unlock is truly only second best and doesn't allow for serious modding. So I follow this forum with interest to see if any change. At least still have my rooted/s-off Desire and play with wife's rooted SGS2 which with its support has convinced me to get the Samsung Nexus. Xda is such a cool community but not when you cant s-off your HTC.

Not interested. I think that the 5mp is the biggest let down in this phone
