Am I crazy, autoupdate to 1.41 but I still have root - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I rooted my tablet two days ago with the NookandZergy method... I did select that I wanted to install google apps (which I read somewhere blocked auto-updates)...Then it freaking updated...But before factory in stall hack was used I checked to see if I had root (I was able to access my comic books on the root) and I was able to copy something from my network onto my root uning ES file manager... I guess my question is should I be worried that this update will kill my nook? And then my second question, why did it not kill my nook and then my third question how the do I turn off auto update in the future?

not everything is totally removed with update, some stuff will remain but you will no longer be able to access android market. read the development thread, you will need to restore to 1.4.0 and then root again, then use indirects titanium backup block. I have a video uploading showing this now. will be done in morning.

Newbie questions

I have a nook tablet and looking into rooting. Had an iPhone jailbroken from day 1 so very interested in this process for the nook. Apparently its best to down grade to 1.4 first since my nook updated. My daughter received new nook today but she is not giving it up and already has 1.4. I keep asking to trade but not having anything to do with it. Once I move down to 1.4 I can root and block updates it appears. However I do have a question on side loading. I have seen this term used a lot but unsure of its meaning. If I am rooted do I not just use the market to download apps to the nook once rooted?? Do you have to constantly sideload apps even after rooting?? thanks for any help
Sideloading - installing applications/games directly via apk (android package) you have on your home computer or on the SD card of the NT.
A rooted device allows you to download and install apps/games from Google Market as well as Amazon Appstore.
it is driving me crazy looking how to install the apk's from the sd card or computer. running 1.40 I have unknown sources loaded. but i can only sideload the apps if I download them from the nook browser.
how the hell do i load them from the sd card.
btw I am not rooted yet....computer keeps installing it as a storage device and that wont work for the life of me

Have you tried turning on (both) usb debugging settings and automount off? You usually have to redo those settings after a nook reboot.

Help with keeping NT at 1.4.0
Purchased a nook tablet for my mom for christmas but she wants apps not available on nook appstore so I got amazon appstore downloaded and apps added and then got the 1.4.1 update. I got it reset to 1.4.0 and set back up. I don't want to root because I am worried mom will have problems. (she is 73 years young) Happy with it the way it is with nook stuff working and having ability to get other apps from amazon. I keep turning off wireless to keep it status quo. All of the options to block ota seem to need the nt to be rooted. Is there a way to keep at 1.4.0, not root the nt, and be able to keep wireless on??
my undrstanding is root is required and i bet your grandmother would love android market

It seems like she's coming to you for problems, which means she shouldn't have to worry about rooting, and going into the store for help. She probably won't notice anything with missing out on the 1.4.1 update, as it seems like the only thing that was changed was breaking roots and sideloading. If it actually introduced new functionality, I would be amazed. And she probably won't do something that would break her tablet after you root it... it's not like rooted makes killing your system trivial. It is "easy", but you still have to activate root mode, mount /system rw, and then and THEN, you have to do something stupid.
So, I would stop stressing about rooting her device, but then again, if the next update actually forces something that will break the B&N apps (like change the server interface, or something, and reject anyone with an earlier version) then she would either have to live without them, or reset the nook and lose everything (hopefully, you would back it all up, though, right?)
Of course will back up but I was afraid it would make it too complicated but I guess I am going to root and see if she likes it. We can always reset the whole thing back to the beginning. Thanks for the confirmation that I need to root to block ota.
Thanks for the help!!!

[Q] Nook tablet will Not Fully Unroot

I was able to successfully root my nook tablet. Though wished to try a different root program. I tried to uninstall the root normally but found my internet browser was disabled on my nook tablet. As well as my library setting I performed the factory reset to try to fix the problem but I am unable to completely restore my nook tablet. I am unable to download the unrooting program over the internet because the browser and search is disabled.
Is there any way that I may be able to fix my nook with an SD card?
I would also like to know if I can enable usb-debugging other than using the browser on my nook since the browser has been disabled.
Make a wipe erase/deregister your device and use the magic card method by AdamOutler to restore stock, that will put your NT like out-of-the-box.
Sent from XDA using one of my Android Toys
Do you know if there is any packetuninstaller program for the sd card that I can use to unroot my nook tablet?
I would like to reinstall the market once I fix my browser and library issue not having access to either on my tablet kinda sucks http://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
erase/deregister does not remove the android market or the ota block. After resetting device I still have do not have it as an out-of-the-box nook tablet. The browser is still non functional and the library will not work. The only way I can access the internet browser is by clicking on forgot password via the netflix app.
Any other methods do unroot and fully reset device???
Use the convert to 1.4.0 SD option. There is plenty on the boards, you just have to search for the answer. Check out the Noob thread too.
I have now parsed root file used on my nook tablet to allow full access of google launcher and apps. I have rooted access to browser now. Sd card options have not succeded in doing anything but reboot device to 1.4.0 which it is currently on. With removal of root or functionality of the library, shop, or normal search. I would like to regain the functionality of these functions or fully restore my device. I have read through the forums an have not yet reached a solution.
I was wondering if its possible to achieve stock functionality? I am new to the nook tablet. Though I have rooted and unrooted other devices without problems just trying to find a simple restore method that works. All help is greatly appreciated
Sounds like your NT internal files may be corrupt. It's the reason why I'm recommending you root via SD versus internal memory back to 1.4.0. Then run Indirect's unroot app and then try to reinstall Indirect's image. I had to do so because my NT wouldn't charge while on...computers (no matter the size of them or maker) can act quirky and it sometimes takes a couple of reinstalls to get it working the way it should be....nature of the beast.

Heres how I restore my NookTablet to the way it was when I got it (no root/mods)
1. Erase and Deregister
2. Turn off Nook once the erasing is complete
3. Copy acclaim_update.zip to the root of a microsd
4. Turn the nook on, which will start the downgrade/Factory Reset
5. Done, now the Nook is 100% root free.
This method removes all root traces/apps. Then I re-root (which will not work if the NT is already rooted). I'm new to Android in general but I have been an iOS user for 4 years. This is the same as doing a DFU restore.
Ok Let me list what I have tried.. After failed root.
1. Erased/Deregistered device
After boot-up no browser no library no shop
All functions are blocked OS after Erase 1.4.0
2. Erase/Deregister then installed acclaim_update.zip to the root of an sd card
This did nothing....
device is still on 1.4.0 with no browser or normal settings.
3. Reset via Power home button reset worked.
Device rebooted but still all settings the same I believe somehow
OTA block has not been removed. As should have been.
There is still block on factory browser search and library functions.
4. Tried to re-root and sideload super user app unable to fully install root.
Error root is not installed on device software version is still 1.4.0
5. Erase/Deregister again! Let boot normally Searched again through Xda Website for more information on this matter still unable to revert to factory.
I wonder if there is a way to force to 1.4.1. to fully break root functions and revert back to factory and reinstall new root file. I would like to get back unblocked functions of nook library and browser.
Also as a side note the nook seems to be perma downgraded. By some sort of block even after erase/deregister I need to remove whatever is blocking this so I can revert to stock and reinstall the new root.

I'm a noob but I'm pretty sure
Erase/Deregister = clears the /app folder for market and nook store apps and any user files (not system)
Acclaim.zip= completely clears the device. Including the /System/app folder (where the browser resides). And when that's done it recopies the original apps. Which is why if you debloat the NT, a acclaim update/restore restores the files. I can confirm this worked for me since I debloated once and this restored the deleted apps
So unless you didn't do all the steps you must have messed up a critical file that controls the restore process. But I don't think that's possible with current rooting tools.
NOOK TABLET? Unrooted?
I sucessfully backdated my nook tablet to software version, 1.4 and rooted device- however after putting on software version 1.4, I was unable to register device. I skipped the registration video and rooted no problem... wasn't happy with the rooted nook tablet like I was with my rooted nook color.
I wanted to unroot and restore to factory defaults. I sucessfully unrooted my nook tablet and restored to new software 1.4.1. However, when I go to register device, I recieve the same error message I have been getting this whole time with E-AD1202 in bottom left of screen.
Can someone please help?? Thanks so much!
If you have just unrooted your device I would try to Reset your nook tablet.
Hold the power and home key together when powered off then release once in boot screen repeat process in initial boot screen until reset pops up on your screen and follow instructions to reset your nook.

The only reason you can't register would be if you weren't back to stock. Do the factory restore, NOT data reset, again to get back to stock.

Few questions...Nook tablet 1.4.1 forced on a rooted 1.4.0 tablet

So i rooted my wife's tablet when 1.4.0 was on it. everything was working great....until 1.4.1 was pushed. The android market app, android email app and android clock app no longer open. Ive been searching for a solution and i think i may have found one without having to revert back to 1.4.0 and start all over again. If i understand this correctly, all i need to do is this:
Sideload the ADB root hijack.apk file
Follow the Indirect's ADB Root Hijack APP, Allows Root PATCH and Reentry of Root Script video
And i think thats it. Am i missing a step? Also, for what its worth, When i try running the new NThidden app and try to run the unknown sources script, i get a force close everytime. Does this mean that something isnt right with my root? Sorry if im not making some sense...pretty new to this rooting stuff. Thanks in advance.
Honestly, as someone who half knows what I am talking about, I think your best bet is to back everything up, factory reset, and then use the latest and greatest auto root program. This will have the addecd benifit of you never have to worry about it auto updating again!
Everything I have read says 1.4.1 was put in place by people who hate you and want you to be poor. =p

It's not that they want you to be poor; they just want the money that you have to be theirs. They wouldn't begrudge you new money -- as long as you spend it on their services.
This is just me but I would factory reset and follow indirects method with alberts youtube vids..I know people have 1.4.1 going but Im sticking with 1.4.0 until I really need to update. Then watch alberts vids on how to block Over The Air updates and then you wont have to worry bout her tablet getting a forced update.
I'm having the same problem as GMcD.
AFAIK, I used the latest root script that should have blocked the OTA updates. Before I restore to factory and try rooting again, can anyone suggest how I can make sure that the OTAs are disabled again?
Is there any way to verify that the OTA updates have been disabled?
Thanks in advance!
PS much thanks to Indirect and Albert! Great work guys!
go to your settings then device info--> about your NOOK--> Software version should be 9.9.9 if not then it's not blocking OTA's
Frustrated...
Okay, I must be missing something and have hit the point of total frustration I have, I think, a fair amount of experience with rooting (DroidX, GalaxyS, GX2, Axtrix2 and NookColor with NF and HL+ running before they were allowed) so can only guess it's something silly or simple I am overlooking...
I bought my (3) kids NTs for Christmas since I own a fully rooted NC and saw the potential of the device for the price AFTER it was rooted. After they opened and registered them, I jumped online, D/L'd Indirect's scripts (YOU ROCK DUDE!) and had them rooted and on their way in an hour. 5 days later, the stupid 1.4.1 update hits (I was one of those who thought the root alone blocked the OTA) and jacked up all 3 devices.
I have tried EVERY post, hint and tip I can find here to get 1.4.0 back on these devices without success. Things I done:
- Factory reset MULTIPLE times (turning on wifi ONLY long enough to get past the registration screen)
- Downloaded the acclaim_update.zip file multiple times from multiple sites (latest one yesterday afternoon from Indirect's post). I have left it zipped, not changed the name and put it on the root partition of the card.
- Tried 3 different SD cards (all 2GB and have been used for rooting all my other devices without any issues), formatted from the PC and formatted from the NT
No matter what I seem to do, I can't get back to base 1.4.0. FR reverts back to stock 1.4.1 after reset and when I try to boot to the SD cards, the screen flashes a second like it's going to then just errors out saying try again or contact support. I "think" I have followed every post or trick to the letter, but can't get anywhere...
Anyone else seeing this problem or do I just have three jacked up tablets? Am I missing something?
I had just gotten mine rooted (using Indirect method), when I got hit with the update. Luckily I had a titanium backup. Here's what I did:
Restored 1.40 with sd card (did not even move my data, just copied the card to computer just in case it got wiped)
Rooted using updated Indirect method (smoother and easier than 1st time and set version to 9.9.9.
Then restored apps & data from backup (still on sd card)
Only trouble I had was with the drivers (I had to load a program to delete the drivers-don't recall the name but it's in Indirect's troubleshooting drivers thread)
Whole process was a pain but still only took a couple of hours.
Mike
I forgot one step in between the restoring and the rooting:
When I restored to 1.40 my n button wouldn't work so I had to erase and deregister the device (in settings under device info)
Then when I was able to connect I had to register again (no big deal)
Good luck,
Mike

I am having the same issue. I have tried to dl, re-dl everything possible to get mine to go to a 1.4.0. i just received mine as a gift and tbh i dislike how you have to purchase every little thing on it. SOOOOOOO what can I do to get it to a 1.4.0. I can follow instuctions and just need to warm up on this new technology hehe.. Oh another thing, as im going by albert wertz video, i cant help but to notice that his NT starts at 9.9.9? If I can get mine to go to a 9.9.9 and then restarting from there, I can do that as well. PLZ HELP
my question is, TiBu needs root. Now mine becomes 1.4.1 and TiBu is not working. How can I back up my stuff before reverting it back to 1.4.0?
Unfortunately, you can't. I bit the bullet today and did the 1.4.0 restore, re-root and OTA block. I've had to re-download all my apps and lost any saved game data but it is worth it to me.
I had restored my son's NT and realized how much nicer it is to have a rooted device that didn't require adb commands for installing apps. The entire process took me about 45 minutes with about a third of the time waiting for large app downloads (Madden 12).

[Q] NT looks rooted but it's not. I created a "Mutt"

Both of my computers refused to let me change the drivers in the NT.
I was able to get it from 1.4.1 to 1.4.0 and sideload apps. I got cwm into emmc then got ADB launcher working which helped my disposition. I have no use for B&N home, etc.
By determination rather than knowledge; I have it doing what I have been doing on the NC for a year. I also have the reader from B&N (I missed that on the cm7 NC) without having to see the rest of B&N.
What condition should the NT be in before putting cm7 on? How can I tell if the drivers are right for the new cm7? How can I tell if it’s even rooted. This is so embarrassing! I have this thing working so good but I got there in such a convoluted way!
As of right now, the Alpha links to CM7 has been pulled due to an error where it would brick your device when you tried to format an sd card. I'm a noob in the development area, but from what I can gather, as long you have CWM either internally or on an sd card, you would be able to flash CM7 and wouldn't need to update any drivers. The drivers are necessary for adb especially for Indirect's nook and zergy method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354487) and if you had issues updating the drivers try (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1415812) or if you are having trouble seeing the device when you ran the nook&zergy root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363652) this should help you out. Hope this helps.
If it is rooted, what will the specs say? There should be a way to tell.
Sent from my Nook Tablet
Using Indirect's Nook&Zergy through your computer, your software version would be 9.9.9 because of the OTA block and for me, the wifi Mac Address on my NT says Unavailable.
From what you have said in your previous post, it seems that you only downgraded to 1.4.0 and then sideloaded apps. So just to clarify, do you have any gapps(google apps like market, talk, calendar) on your device? Do you have Superuser? Also if you have rooted your device, if you use es file explorer (free app) and go to settings you can see if you can mount the emmc (internal memory) which require root and super user permission. Or just try using Button Savior app which requires root as well.
That's what I did. I only sideloaded a few apps to see it it worked. But when restarted it only a couple were there. Then the next time I turned it on I saw something load that I didn't recognize, then I was able to download anything I wanted from the market.
It is not rooted but Superuser and Root Explorer works like my rooted NC. I have cmw from Rom Mgr. Button Savior didn't work.

For the symptoms you mention i think you got caught by the 1.4.1 update. Oh well!. If you have CWM then boot into it and flash back to 1.4.0 using one of the 2 ROM's offered in this page, copy it to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup folder and restore from CWM Backup & restore> restore, select the folder and thats it. What i have mentioned here is in my FAQ too.

New update v.1.4.2 available.

I just noticed that a new update to version 1.4.2 started rolling out Monday, February 20, 2012. All those with a rooted 1.4.1 NT that weren't blocking updates because "there isn't an update available now anyway" may want to look into it now.
I haven't heard any details concerning what this update fixes or adds but, if recent history is any indication, it very well may break your rooting and/or side-loading apps and who knows how long it may take our resident geniuses on here to come up with a work-around.
Be forewarned everyone.
- Byron
It would be great to hear from somebody, if new Nook Tablets (16GB) are coming already with this version and if they can be rooted and reinstalled to CM7
Anyone wanting to can download it here.
The page notes "The NOOK Tablet Ver1.4.2 update provides minor system enhancements."
Edit: Also, BN_AlexG (admin at the B&N forums) said he will post the changes soon (post made 5 hours ago). Dean_Gibson also posted the changed files in the thread I linked.
Easy rooting
There should be no concerns about rooting. I was unable to upgrade from 1.4.1 rooted (w/Market, etc) to 1.4.2 (the B&N update detects an error and does not continue), but reverting to 1.4.0 stock (erase+deregister+reregister) and then applying my rooting procedure from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1413734 to root and update directly to 1.4.2 and reroot, worked. Since that is more sensitive to B&N changes than most rooting methods, other rooting methods should work as well.
I dont think the root block on the new 8gb nook tablets running 1.4.2 is what actually blocks rooting. I think the new wave of tablets have some changes beyond the rom that actually controls the boot sequence and prevents rooting from SD card. Not sure though... My newest video shows that no current root methods work on the 1.4.2 8 gb nook tablets and I dont think it will be long until they apply the same changes to the next wave of manufactured 16gb tablets.
Yes, it got me just a minute ago. Disabled Android Marketplace
Yes, 1.4.2 breaks things. Android Marketplace is now disabled on my Nook Tablet With SD card boot.
It pops up:
You must add an account to the device to continue. Do you want to add one now?
But clicking either button returns to the home screen
Other features seem to be working.

I'm going to assume you didn't have updates blocked via indirect's method or some other method, yes?
Or did you intentionally update to see if the updates would break stuff?
Slapped with 1.4.2 OTA, what are my options?

I rooted my NT two days ago using Albert's SD card method (thanks!), and thought I had for sure used NT Hidden Settings to block OTA. This morning I saw that the update had been applied, and a few things on my NT are now broken.
Now I cannot access the market. I get the same error as sherwingws.
Other gapps are broken now too including Talk, Currents, and gmail.
Can I just repeat the SD root process? Or do I need to make other changes before I attempt that. What are my options at this point?
Thanks everyone!
Also wanting to confirm that 1.4.2 breaks root. Rooted my NT two weeks ago using Indirect's sd card method and could have sworn that I blocked OTA updates, but about an hour ago got the update anyway and any programs requiring root won't run. This includes Android Marketplace. ::sadface::
Gapps broken also at first, BUT...using getjar app, I re-downloaded gmail and it had no problem installing and running. So maybe all is not lost?
Edit: Sorry, I lied about gapps. Ignore that, pls.
1.42
I am also having the same problem, no market place which also makes me sad. Anyone know what I should do?
