Questions in regards to the Asus Transformer Prime - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

If you only know the answer to like just one question than just answer that one lol. Don't feel the need to answer all of my questions. Thank you for your time.
1. Is the TF Prime going to become the new flagship powerhouse Android® tablet?
*Like the Xoom once was, followed by the Sammy gTAB 10.1?*
2. Will we soon see a ICS aka Android 4.0 port any time soon?
*according to ASUS they will have an official ICS update for the TF Prime in early January of 2012, for some reason I doubt that, even though it shouldn't take them more than a month to push an update especially because they aren't like HTC or Sammy, with there extremely sophisticated Touch Wiz and Sense. That causes for application updates to the Android SDK, to be stripped and gutted in order to put there own skin on top, which takes even more time*
3. How good does the screen look with the Super IPS+, I believe that's what it is called.
*how does it compare to renowned screens on devices such as; The Samsung gTAB 7.0+ w/ its SAMOLED+, The Samsung GSII with Its SAMOLED+, The HTC Vivid I'm not sure what display it utilizes, the LG Nitro I think its called I could be wrong but its an LG phone with I believe a Super Nova something display?, and lastly my current phone the HTC Sensation 4G w/ it's qHD display.(In regards to movie quality, web browsing, pictures, Netflix & Hulu+ streaming, etc and stuff like that.)
4. Also had the tablet received root yet? And any custom roms created yet? (Rather they be in pre alpha/alpha/beta)
5. Lastly should I still get this tablet even if its not available completely till mid January ish? With CES In Vegas early January maybe something better will be announced? For mid spring?
Thank you for taking the time to answer my various questions in regards to the TF Prime. I'm just trying to get as much info as possible before dropping $650+ on this tablet.

It's the first tablet to use a quad-core chip making it the current "flaghship." Others have announced quad-core tablets with release expected Q1. Whether they will be better than the Prime is subjective and will depend on their features. Expect to find out more January 11th at CES.

Asus has been one of the best manufacturers with updates. Based on the importance of them to be first with quad-core I can't imagine them not being one of the first to introduce ICS.

The unique feature of the Prime's display is what Asus has named "super bright." It's far brighter than other displays currently available and would seem the best for daylight use. Asus doesn't make their own displays - they buy them from either Sharp, AIO, or LG the same as everyone else. Only Samsung makes their own displays. Read through people's comments and they're generally satisfied with the display although some have said the colors on the G-Tab are more vibrant and there have been some QC issues.

People have rooted it and lost root after Asus's first update. Do a search.

Personal choice. If you need a tablet now, are an Asus fan, or want the keyboard then buy it now. If you have the time there's no harm in waiting until CES which is only three weeks away to see what tablets are going to look like in 2012.

1. Is the TF Prime going to become the new flagship powerhouse Android® tablet?
it is the current flagship for what's the latest and greatest regarding android tablets as it's the first one running tegra3. it's not like the xoom or the galaxy tab I/O edition in the sense that updates don't come directly from google, rather they come from asus, but so far asus has a good track record in updating the tf101 very quickly and i personally like the small touches they add to the device. if i had to bet, they will be the first mainstream tablet with ICS running on it officially.
also, the xoom was and will always be a piece of crap device that should have never been released. the tf101 and galaxy tab series were the old flagships imo.
2. Will we soon see a ICS aka Android 4.0 port any time soon?
asus has stated end of the year or early next year, they've stated that the primes that will come out in singapore around mid jan will be sold with ICS preloaded on them, so that bodes will for us getting it in the next few weeks or so.
3. How good does the screen look with the Super IPS+, I believe that's what it is called.
the screen is great. superIPS+ is mainly for outdoor use as it bumps the brightness beyond any other tablet in the market, which makes it actually readable in sunlight, but it will murder your battery and shouldn't be on all the time.
personally, i find it to be better than any other tablet screen i've used (xoom, tf101, gtab 10.1, viewsonic gtab, ipad1, gtab 7" (1st gen)) the colors are vibrant, it has great viewing angles, and text is very clear.
4. Also had the tablet received root yet? And any custom roms created yet?
people were able to root some of the primes, but the latest OTA seems to break root if you don't have it already before, some people have said they couldn't root the gamestop tablets even before the OTA, so reports vary. i don't think we'll see any custom roms before ICS drops, with a lot of slower developement being due to less people being able to get it in their hands right now.
5. Lastly should I still get this tablet even if its not available completely till mid January ish? With CES In Vegas early January maybe something better will be announced? For mid spring?
something better will always be around the corner, but i can say with 99% certainty that anything announced at CES won't be on the market until summer (Q2/Q3) at the earliest. and personally, i don't see the point of the insane resolution panels that everyone is trying to make right now. ~720p on a 10" screen is plenty of pixel density for me.
but, if you can't get your hands on one before CES, you might as well see what they announce. personally, i'm happy i got this, and when those tablets finally hit the stores, if i like them, i'll sell this and get one of those, the kicker with the prime though, is the dock, no one else makes something like the dock that works as well as it does. so for me, i'll probably wait until asus makes a tf301 or something like that which runs win8
hope that helped

Ok this something I just noticed tonight When I was downloading pics from Goolge images. When it downloads the pictures and you open the gallery its doesnt order them in the downloaded order which is very strange because the original Gallery I have always had on my Evo never had this problem. I actually noticed this when I copied over my Downloaded pics from My Evo but I thought it was something that had to do with the fact the pictures were originally downloaded from the Evo.
But its the same when it puts the pictures downloaded from the Prime. Wanted to know if there is a way to correct this because its very annoyng. The downloaded pictures should be numbered in the order they were downloaded not randomly like its doing.
For example This my dowloaded pics from left to right beggining to end.
As you Can See the KTM Motorcycle pics were the first but for some reason it split up the first picture of the motorcycleb and put it in the front of the Gallery. The Second group of pics I downloaded was the Shelby Cobra pianted Mystic And the third group of pics were E36 BMW M3s

Keep Prime or wait to see what's available at CES

Hi,
Now that many of you have received the Prime I was wondering, now that the excitement has worn off (or has it?) is the tablet what your thought it would be?
I own the original transformer and have my Amazon order for a 64gig tablet arriving mid January (or later) . Maybe I should cancel my order and wait to see what's announced at the Consumser Electronic Show. I've been reading about a new Lenovo tablet that should have higher resolution than the Prime and may be clocked slightly higher. I know the Lenovo tablet is speculation but it does suggest that there might be some more advanced tablets just around the corner .... and hell I've waited this long.
Thanks,
MD
keep the pre order and wait to swe what is announced at ces. the lenovo tablet will hopefully be announced and i know htc has a tablet in the works and i believe samsung might have their next galaxy tab announcement as well.
There is always something better around the corner. If you keep waiting for the next best thing you will wait forever.
Really, it's the dock that makes the Transformer (and Prime) of interest to me. Without it, I'd probably not be nearly as likely to get a tablet at all. I know there are Bluetooth keyboards available, but it's the fact that the TF/Prime+dock is an integrated unit (and can comfortably be used as such, no secure, flat surface required) gives me enough functionality that I can justify the cost for the tablet.
So, I don't really have any interest in other tablets.
Lenovo and HTC Tegra3 tablets have already been announced, dunno if they'll be cheaper or have better specs, or when they'll be released.
Until I have the dock I can't form a complete opinion, however it is easily the best tablet I have ever used in terms of performance, quality screen and features. Plus it is just as slick looking as the ipad2. I am an owner of a TF1 as well, which I still use since the dock is important to me. The dock is definitely what makes this tablet unique with the double battery life and excellent keyboard setup, so if the dock is not important surely in 2 months Lenovo or Acer will have something higher spec, but will it be updated and supported as well as Asus? I doubt that very much.
The only one I would wait for would be is the Lenova, supposeably it's coming with 2 gb of Ram, but that's the only boost over the prime, but then again you loose the cabability of having a keyboard dock that adds battery life.
They're always gonna come out with something better specs wise. But until that product is actually released youre never going to know if its really better or worth the wait...again. I say get Prime now and sell it later if you like something else. I know thats what I'll be doing.
Since the Prime won't come out untill 6th of January in Holland I will wait untill the CES. Asus has delayed the release for so long I don't mind waiting a few days to see if there are going to come much better devices for the same price..
I'm not really sure how any CES tablet would be substantially better. Especially once the TF201 gets ICS I think it'll be a winner for some time to come. I have no plans to get rid of mine.

I don't know if 2gb of ram would do any good for android devices.
from what I've read anything above 1 gb would be useless.

More RAM, higher resolution screens, AMOLED screen's perhaps..
@Above, in the future this won't be useless.
Hmm, Samsung's rumored Exynos tablet will be interesting...
2.0 ghz dual-core processor (32nm processor), stereoscopic 3D displays and resolutions of up to 2560-by-1600, and retina display... oh, and supposedly 11 in.
I'm thinking about alternatives a little differently, from a cost perspective. Funds are short.
I'm without a tablet atm; miss the Acer tablet I returned for comfortable media consumption. Backordered the TP at BB, and keyboard would come later, if ever.
If I choose to delay the tablet, I'll likely upgrade my OG Droid with Galaxy Nexus, and wait till money is available again.
Either that, or look into a refurb'd Color Nook with CM9 on it, pass it to the kid if something better comes along for me.
If you're tight on cash and want to skip the TP, you should look at a Galaxy Tab 7" GSM or WiFI only refurb or just plain used on Craigslist, they're going cheap. It's a MUCH better device than the NC (I own both) and at the current price points you can find it at, a better overall value now too.

True but it would be more future proof than the TFP when they do find away to use it.

The Lenovo tablet enters production next month. Acer was trying to make X-Mas and missed so January or February is pretty likely. HTC uses Qualcomm chips and the newer Snapdragon's won't be available until mid year so they're a long shot. The Samsung tablet's a mystery - some online rags are saying February but that seems a little ambitious.

Both the Lenovo and Acer tablets are supposed to have more RAM (2GB) and higher res displays (1900x1200) then the Prime. They're Teg3 too and clocked at 1.6GHz. I'd guess that's going to become the new high-end standard. Thin and light is expected now so I'd assume the form factors will be similar to the Prime and Toshiba Excite (the thinnest, lightest tablet). They're both supposed to launch with ICS also. When all is said and done, the Prime's biggest differentiator is going to be its keyboard dock. Just like the dual-cores, all Teg3's will perform similarly. I'd expect the Acer and Lenovo to be announced in almost production-ready form at CES on January 11th.

More DRAM is always a benefit. Per Anandtech's review one of the issues he ran into was trying to edit a document, switching between apps and sometimes the memory management closing the editor on him resulting in lost work and there's no auto save.
I figure with all the delays with TP I might as well see what's coming out for the new year. I'm liking Lenovo's better specs (1.6GHz and 2GB DRAM) and also Samsung's 2GHz Exynos (prefer faster dual-core than slower quad-core).
As it was suggested I'll hold on to my pre order from Amazon and ride it out a bit but I think I'll end up cancelling it. I do own the Transformer dock and have never really used it. Virtually brand new. In the end I feel having a keyboard defeats the purpose of have a portable device.
I do have a first gen Transformer and a Samsung 7.0 plus, so I'm more than covered. If I do change my mind I can purchase a Prime from a retail location.

I wouldn't want a Acer tablet, their stuff just isn't good quality most of the time, but perhaps they surprise us with their tablet..
Samsung however, is something I'm very interested in, they seem to have the same quality as Asus with their Tab 10.1 (and others).

Alternative to the prime

Guys,
Thanks to this forum I found out about the GPS issue and was able to cancel my order with OD on time. Once again, XDA saved me some troubles.
It seems this problem is very (!) similar to the one I had with my Tmobile Samsung phone. Nothing was able to fix that GPS.
Anyways, I have a problem.
I MUST buy a tablet this week to give to someone as a gift. GPS is important.
Considering the Prime is out of question, which one would you recommend? I'm researching and doing my homework, but it is also good to hear from you guys.
Thanks in advance.

If you need something right away. Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a good goto android tablet.
If you don't need it ASAP, wait until Q2 2012. They'll be rolling out a lot of new gadgets.
Thanks. Yes, I need it ASAP. Birthday gift. I don't have an option.

Realistic advice: Unless you want your friend to be ASUS's corporate guinea pig while they fix all of the quirks in the device, get the GTab or something comparable. Giving someone a gift in which they have to immediately be aware of it's defects and the possibility of RMA'ing it is a really crappy gift.
Thanks guys, but the GPS MUST be totally functional. Device WILL be used for navigation with Sygic.
My vote would also be for the galaxy tab 10.1 or 8.9. They work and look great. As a present unless the person likes messing with these the tab seems to be working well. Too many issues right now with the prime jmo. Btw I am typing this on a tab 10.1 but I have a prime on order. Not sure if I am going to cancel it or not. The geek in me still wants it so I probably won't.

I am also vacillating because of the concerns raised in this forum, however, due to the inconsistencies with reports of bad performance and stability, I am wondering if there was an issue with just initial batches and that newer ones (just built) are less likely to exhibit any of the serious issues raised with GPS and wifi?
I am going to wait for my (expansys-usa) order to be fulfilled. I don't think that a more appealing tablet will come out before June.
Is there some correlation with the defective (or working) units and a specific build date, build location and/or batch number?

Galaxy Tab is still the best choice for an established Android tablet.

well if you want a sub par device on specs, display, perfaormance and looks, get something else. If you want something that will truly be next level tableting, get the Prime. buff said!
THE POWER IS YOURS! choose wisely and don't settle for something less based on a few gripes a minority of users been having. if you absolutely need GPS...then get the prime and external Bluetooth GPS receiver bring in the new year with the most powerful Android tablet in the world. and will hold that title for the next 4-6 months easily. maybe longer.
it'll be silly to pay$499 for another tab that is outdated specwise and consumer wise. when you can pay the same price and have cutting edge technology. galaxy tab sux anyways..lmao touchwiz over honeycomb blows and lags even more than other build or versions of honeycomb. lmfao
Another vote for the Galaxy Tab 10 or 8
Also the Sony Tablet looks very nice

its actually pretty nice. not as thick as it looks. I've played around with it in person. its a decent tegra2 tab. but it wasn't as much of a success as Sony would've hoped for. alot of issues with lag surrounding it. if anything I were to get other than Prime, it would be the Galaxy tab 7.7. it will have the best display and most powerful out of the Tab lineup. that galaxy note is really nice also. eliminate a device and that can be used as a tablet also. that 5.3in screen is huge and beautiful for a phone/tablet.
Guys, listen to what the dude sez. He needs good GPS. This is for his friend, not for you.
The only Android tabs with good wireless performance are the Xoom and the Samsung GT 10/8.9. I like the Xoom since it has more I/O (SD slot, micro-USB), but it's heavy and its look is at best industrial. So the only proven choice is the SGT.
If it's for a woman, suggest the 8.9 for lighter weight and easier handling, w/o sacrificing resolution. In fact, if it's for on-the-go use, you may also consider the SGT 7 Plus for yet more portability. The 8.9 would be the sweet spot, though.

Wow, I didnt know 50-60% failure rate on GPS and other things were "a few grips a minority of users been having"...really? Then why are the forums exploding with mostly negative reviews? the minority and very very lucky are the ones that have all their dreams in a good tablet.
I am quickly becoming one that am tired of factory reseting my tablet 2-3 or more times a day because the screen is unresponsive or it just decides to do random screen selections. I have high hopes that maybe..just maybe it will be fixed in ICS...but i'm a realist.
oh, and Acer and HTC will be to market soon..so the "next 4-6 months easily..maybe longer" statement is based on factless and honestly niave speculation.
By the tablet and play the lottery. 50% chance you'll get a superb device...50% chance you'll get a 499 POS. You have to decide for yourself if your willing to deal.
As of now, i'm cancelling my other Newegg preorder and will probably return this one..but since i've got 30 days to return to gamestop..and the the manager has seen first hand my problem..(oh..and the district manager returned his on friday becuase of the screen issues and lockups...) i'm going to play with it for a bit longer and see what happens mid january if at least on thing can go right with this device...release of ICS.
Hey it's the new year. Let's give peeps the benefit of the doubt and not be so quick on the trigger. Peace and good will and all that. Think positive thoughts.

just take a look at the polls. on TransformwrForums there's a poll asking if people have issues. more than 70% said No, perfectly happy with it. check out all the various polls here. all of them show Prime in good light. people with issues are the minority, point blank. plus actually xda is the only blowing up with people complaining. TransformerForum is moving along very smoothly without all the threads of complainers. most of these people with issues are same ones posting a million different threads on same issue.
yes, the issues are real. but alot of them are overexaggerated. look at all the various polls in this section people made to try to make prime look bad. all it did was back fire and show the majority doesn't have issue. like the wifi poll shows majority don't have issues. the other poll on various issues. majority voted no problems and completely satisfied with device. sorry buddy, my device works perfectly fine. no issues. and do do most of other Prime owners also. its always the negative ones who will whine/be vocal the most in making threads. the positive people came out n voted in polls to show what most speak of is morsel isolated. most don't care about GPS, whether working or not. its not a dealbreaker for me. and since my display, performance, and wifi is great, I'm good
his quote on get the tablet and play the lottery is funny though. n actually Acer and other tab you mentioned will not be out soon cuz no other tablet has an official release date from manufacturer. keep dreaming buddy

Sorry, somehow can't get the video embebed...
great video. I love his enthusiasm when he announces the products..lol. so according to video, Prime owners are "Mobile Tech Trendsetters". I like it. also clearly shown Asus plans on supporting prime and has no intentions of discontinuing it. With Prime and new tablets, they said they have devices for all market segments. very good news for prime owners. Don't let the hate or negative bashing make you think Prime being discontinued. PRIME IS HERE TO STAY. people don't know what da hell they talking about I really like that Padaphone. really cool how you just slide it into the back of that tablet and transforms from a phone into a tablet. plus it won CES 2012 BEST innovation of the year award. Asus is becoming the 1st. of alot of things tech wise in the tablet world. Asus playing hardball in 2012. very glad to own a Prime.
also for those thinkn the re-branding or name change means phaseout of Prime, video shows you're mistaken. Transformer Prime is now called the TRANSFORMER PAD PRIME" wow big deal..lol. we here to stay!
here is the video:
Shih dude is a character. I see he has practiced his vocal cadence, but the over-the-top delivery combined with his heavy accent makes it a bit hilarious. Probably intentional. He's like an Asian Charlie Chaplin.
The new line (incl TP700) is slated for Q2, so a spring release. Prime still has 2-3 months of limelight for those who care about such things. BTW, Prime is noted as for "mobile tech trendsetters" in the presentation. In the press release, the first sentence describing the Prime says "designed for early adopters." May explain why availability is limited. Well, that, and selling toys right after Xmas is never a good idea.
No mention of everybody's fav, the $250 7" 370T. Would assume then that it won't make spring launch. Would make sense for 2H, since Teg3 would drop more in price by then, to be fitted into a "value" device.
Not much to say about the PadPhone, which occupied half of the entire presentation. Well, two things to say: it's actually a 3-in-1 (phone/tablet/laptop) now with inclusion of keyboard dock, and the stylus/headset combo is pretty cool--at least until you lose it.
We'll see how the hype pans out in reality. Call me a sceptic. Should know by April, its announced launch date.
Overall, have to give Asus props as trying to innovate, which is more than I can say for the rest of the other PC manufacturers. Need to pay more attention to fit-and-finish issues, though.

Not to piss in anyone's Cheerios or speculate the future, but you really need to take what manufacturers say publically with a grain of salt. It's accurate, but only at the moment it's literally said.
Here's a good example. Asus announced a TF101 3G model last spring. They posted a web page for it in August that's still up. Reporters got review samples in the fall. It was never released.
Asus Eee Pad Transformer 3G Price & Release Dates Confirmed
by Darcy LaCouvee on Aug 02, 2011
The current best selling Android Honeycomb tablet in the world, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, has just received the formal treatment, courtesy of Asus. As of a few hours ago, they’ve taken the liberty of putting up an official product page, which is virtually identical to the one of the Wi-Fi only variant, but with one small, important detail. 3G.
According to NetbookNews and NotebookItalia, both of whom we have a lot of love for, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer 3G will be going on sale in Europe for 499 Euros for the 16GB version, and for 599 Euros for he 32GB.which sports a TF101G model number).
Another important thing to note is that Asus has altered the battery time of the Eee Pad Transformer TF101G (with keyboard dock) to be only 14.5 hours, versus the 16 hours of its non-3G brother. According to our sources, we can expect to see these go on sale in Europe first towards the end of August, with the US and Canada to follow shortly thereafter. There’s no word yet whether any of the major carriers will be picking any of these up, but we expect at least one of them to. Either way, expect the 16GB 3G Transformer to go for $499, and for the 32GB to go for $599.

I agree emote. as long as they tighten down their QC issues, Asus is the company to beat, for Android, for 2012 and beyond.
but WTF, I didn't know it had a stylus headset. blew me away when he had the padaphone in the tablet, then the phone starting ringing. so he answered the phone with his Zulus..lmfao WTF! SMH caught me way off guard with that one. you can hear the crowd gasping with Amazement. Damn, I would love to have that 3-1 setup. from Phone to Tablet to Notebook. it has me rethinking my galaxy note future purchase now. I wonder if the phone will come with at least the tablet display. if so how much? then would the tf-201 dock be compatible or is this yet another separate dock needed?
I'm sure Asus is going to be star of MWC. the have some? !#& for ya..lol but dang Asus, you really need to take care of Prime issues some having. Don't let this taint all these new great devices you bringing out.
I must admit, at first I didn't think much of the phone. didn't know or cared for details on it. but now after seeing this video, I think I gotta have one..lol I wonder does the tablet have its own separate memory storage or uses the phone storage only. does display have any other ports on it? man, this is crazy! this completely destroys what Motorola tried to do with the Atrix.

This is XDA. You want to be objective... not optimistic or pessimistic.
Anyways, MWC as a whole is nothing but disappointment so far. Honestly, I'm not sure how Padaphone stole the show when HTC ONE X is getting the most buzz....
But yea.. MWC so far.. is boring & makes you wonder why they even have the event. Apple's March event is getting more press/media coverage.... =/

Is the Transformer Prime worth the buy?

Obviously it's the most "powerful" in terms of pure processing power and GPU as far as Android tablets go. But is the problems worth not buying? I will not be rooting the device as way to many problems I see on here. My question is if I leave it stock would I have some stupid issue's? I dont use bluetooth or GPS on a tablet so..
Personally, I am waiting for the t700 that is due in June. The wifi issue did it for me. All fixed in the t700 plus the hd screen will be nice.

Well, people like you tend to wait a year or 6 month's for devices.. To me waiting 3 1/2 month's because something better is coming is pointless.
I Need a tablet NOW. My question is since the Prime's hardware is obviously superior to anything on the market is it worth purchasing even so many other issues.
I said I don't use GPS or Bluetooth on a Tab bc. it seems that alongside not-so-strong WiFi are the only problems.. O and the Serial # problems, light-bleed ... Am I missing nething? I am only asking as i'm purchasing my Prime in less than an hour from Staples..
Kolja Dunhamm (CM-developer) seems to have concluded that Tegra 3, which the prime is based on, is junk. Just like Tegra 2.
There's a few much better chipsets out there already and even better ones coming soon. Unless you want something now, I'm sure you will be able to get something much more worthwhile in not too much time.
If it will have the awesome keyboard dock built into the design from day-one, however, is hard to tell or predict. If a integrated keyboard dock is more important than processing power, the prime might be worth it.
Otherwise I say wait it out. See what else is coming.

If your buying it anyway why are you asking if its worth it? If you want people on a forum to help you feel better about buying something then go ahead and buy it. You have the official blessing. But if you wanna be smart and you have to have a tablet now then get something a lot cheaper and wait for much better devices coming in the next few months for the same money.
I returned my Prime last month, and bought the 32GB original TF101. I saved $100, and everything on it works like it should. Although it doesn't have the raw processor power of the Prime, my WiFi range is about 33% better than it was on the Prime, which is more important to me anyway.

You better click that link, because it took me one hours getting it here. From the G+ app. One hour. I'm not kidding. That one link = one hour of work.
Because the Google+ Android app has no way of sharing outside the G+ app (leaving no way to draw new users), no way of sharing with the Android mechanisms.
And the mobile web-pages you are forced onto does not work if you have more than one Google account on your phone. I can't have normal webpages pages? My phone has better resolution than most laptops sold these days?
And then when you enter the laptop Google doesn't find the page your are searching for because evidently Goolge started sucking on search and can't even search its own ****ing social network.
Absolutely pathetic. Absolute garbage.
But there you have it. A link. Clickable. It should work. Even on Android, it might even lead you to the G+ app itself. Where you again will be able to share it with noone outside the world of G+.
These are amazing times we live in.

If I have to unroot everytime there's a fw upgrade, it's not worth the bother. Android OS will continue to evolve so development will have to constantly catch up. I've had enough of the Prime, my next tab will have 1900x1200 res and Jelly Beans.
Well i got mine because someone mislabled it and put a $399 sticker on it XD so ya totally worth it for me.
At the price tag of $500.... the galaxy tab was about that when it first came out. The first transformer was close to that when it first came out as well... hell up to a few months ago it was STILL $500 in most stores, granted that was bundled with the dock.
In all, for what you get its a steep price but a cutting edge tablet. Sometimes the cutting edge cuts you tho, in the case of GPS and wifi. in 6 more months there will be a dozen tablets with the tegra 3, and by christmas there will be the tegra 4 or whatever comes next. theres always something bigger down the road.
The way i look at it: If you want a tablet you are going to push to the max get the prime. If you want a good tablet that has the problems mostly worked out, get the TF101 on clearance (at least in my area) for like, $300? Really it boils down to how much are you going to use it, what are you using it for, what are you willing to pay for it, and how soon do you need it. With all electronics, it pretty much doubles every six months. Quad core tablets now, watch us have a 8 core tablet by christmas XD
TLDR: This tablet does everything i want it to do, and more. amazingly fast for games, pictures, great for watching movies (tho not wirelessly), overall im happy with it and the price i paid. YMMV.

Never heard of someone getting their warranty denied due to rooting. I know it's in Asus's rules but I have enough experience to know that rules like that aren't always strictly enforced.

Definitely worth it.
)Bought the prime yesterday.
It's really hard to explain the feeling when holding this device.
Asus gave a new meaning to the word "premium".
This device is absolutely amazing in all ways. Build quality is of the best I've encountered, screen is amazingly bright.
Speed, well it's tegra 3. Mulitasking is super smooth and just a pleasure with ics.
The keyboard dock, although being small, is very well made. I can type on it perfectly. The dock can also power an external hdd.
Gaming is awesome (tegra 3, duh).
Camera is nice, although not super necessary on tablets except for the front facing. Video quality is very nice.
Dont know about battery life yet. Ive only had it for a day.
I sold my ipad (and divorced apple thank god) and got this. I waited to see what would be the new king after MWC, but it seems that the TFP kept the crown for now.
All in all IMO this is the best value you can get for your money right now.
Truly amazing tablet.
For what it is worth, I read that quick thread in google+ and really put zero weight by what that guy said.....
OMAP5 wont be on the market in users hands for a year (!) and S4 devices wont be in customers hands until Q2/Q3 this year. So Tegra 3 is really compared to Exynos and S3 and OMAP4 which it does great against......and is the best chipset for the first 4-6 months of its life....
The chipset on Tegra3 is not a disappointment to me....it does everything you need and more. If you live to benchmark your tablet then wait...otherwise Tegra3 is fine

Uhh... You don't have to unroot every time there's an update. The updates do remove root, but Voodoo OTA RootKeeper can just bring it right back if you made a su backup with it. Simple.

Help deciding between prime or infinity

Hey all, I am looking to get a tablet and have two options for the same price. I can get the prime with keyboard dock and other accessories or an infinity. From what I've read so far they are very similar except for the screen. I'm leaning towards the prime since it has the accessories.
I'm def going to root it asap, so I wanted to get some opinions. Do any of you have the keyboard?? Is it worth it vs the infinity??
Thanks!

Keyboard is worth it as an option - we sometimes use it sometimes do not.
I have TF201 - very happy (sans GPS).
Wookie 1.4 ROM fixs all performance issues with PRIME (I have not yet installed it myself as the most recent ASUS ROM was also very very stable and fast).
What about these wifi issues I keep seeing. Some people make it sound like you can't even get a signal while others say it's fine. I don't plan on being outside of my house with the tablet so should i be concerned??
My dad bought a TF700 yesterday. I was setting it up and noted that the wifi was showing stronger signal than my 201. However, since the very latest update a few days ago I have noted significant improvement in my wifi on the 201. I ran speedtest.net and pulled the same numbers as my laptop.
The TF700 sitting next to the 201 looked IDENTICAL screen-wise wich I didn't expect considering the higher display specs of the 700. However, the 700's camera image on-screen was seriously yellow in comparison to my 201. Doing some research i found that a yellow screen on the 700 has been reported by many sources including reviews. When we transferred the picture to a PC and it didnt look as bad.
Office depot has the TF700 for $449. They have the 201 DOCK for $99 (in store only). I plugged my 201 dock in to the 700 and it worked perfectly so I suggested to my dad he get that one rather than the 700 dock and save the $50. There are many reports on here that the 201 dock is identical internally to the 700's dock including part numbers etc...
My dad was given a coupon for 20% off accessories when he bought the tablet so the dock will be $80 when he uses it.
All in all I would probably buy the 700 for the higher specs. Performance wise I did not find the 700 a stellar or really noteable improvement. The places I noticed things were more in the software side with extra options in certain places on the 700.
Thanks for that write up. I appreciate it. I spoke to the person that I'm buying it from and he said that wifi has always been strong for him. I did see that there was a new update. I'm not going to be streaming movies etc. mainly just surfing the web and downloading apps. I won't use the camera feature at all so that's not a big factor.
The screen was the big factor for me. I'm coming from an iPad 2 and both the prime and infinity have better screens so I think it's going to be an upgrade for me either way. I've read that many apps aren't optimized for the infinity's screen so not sure if that matters.
I'm kinda leaning towards the prime with the keyboard right now. I'm going to buy it through ebay so if the wifi totally sucks I can file a claim and return it.
I have to be honest though, neither looks as good as the newest displays on iPad. When not side by side you probably wouldnt realize but the clarity and sharpness of the iPad stands out.
having said that I stream netflix on my 201 regularly with no problems.
I agree thatte iPad 3 and 4 are sick and not comparable to the Prime. But since I'm coming from an iPad2 it'll be a slight improvement. Plus I thought that was a great screen anyways.
Good to hear the you can stream netflix over wifi without issues. That's the only thing concerning me at this time.
The prime is basically discontinued which means support and development for it will falter much sooner than the tf700. The screen if you compare text is infinitely better too and the WiFi suckz

I agree 100% with this post... I have a Prime since day one FINALLY there are some solid JB roms available, running energy with mine. As for the discontinued statement it is already happening to the docks. I tried purchasing off amazon the new 500/700 dock and they cancelled my order saying they had no clue when it would be available again. So I had to order the last one from Newegg and they discontinued it after my order.
So basically go with the Infinity or pick up the Nexus 10 if you dont mind having no memory upgrades.
I currently have both. JB Stock vs stock Prime is better. 700 is very laggy and frame rate suck. Nenamark2 is below 39 fps while the Prime gets about 57fps. Even if you enable Force GPU and Disable Hardware Overlay it doesnt make much difference. I had to down grade the 700 to ICS which makes it smoother (nenamark2 score of 41) but what I noticed with ICS is during download of games or app data the 700 becomes unusable just like how Prime was on ICS. JB on Prime took care of this.
Also you will find a lot of games not compatible specifically Gameloft and EA games. You will need to side load most of them but you will need to have a source like a backup from another device. If you dont really play gameloft or EA games then it doesnt matter. Glu games are all available in the market.
The only slight advantage of the 700 is the screen. Its better in particular with text. Micro sd card no longer sticks out if you even use one. From the forums the tf700 needs to be unlocked and loaded with Cleanrom and clemsey kernel to make it on par with the Prime but if score means anything, Nenamark2 on clemsey kernel is 41fps on JB. As far as wifi both seems to be on par. But Prime lacks gps if thats important to you.
EDIT: I just tested wifi again and 700 is slightly better actually by 5-8dbm. Unless you're quite far from your router then that might not matter much. Also noticed the Prime tends to jump around more.
700 on the left

I have a TF201 (since Dec 27th of last year). It is a low SN unit and I've never had any WiFi problems (only the GPS but that's a non-issue for me). It has worked great since new and has only gotten better with each update.
I have a friend that bought TF700's (based on what they saw with my Prime). When we are visiting we usually play the same games etc. sitting next to each other. He always comments that he thinks my Prime out performs his Infinity. There are some apps that work on my Prime and sort of works on his Infinity like multi-live wallpaper. I can assign different pictures to each of my screens without any problems but on his Infinity it doesn't work for some reason. We are both running JB. When we run Beach Buggy Blitz side by side his gets jittery when there is a lot of stuff going on but mine is smooth as silk. Not sure if this is the resolution optimization thing mentioned above.
I say go with the Prime if it's the same price as the Infinity especially if it come with the dock/accessories and the Infinity is just the tablet.

Mine is not total crap. It's been great since I've had it. Just because you may have had a bad expericance with Asus doesn't mean they are all crap. You add ZERO to this discussion and in no way are you helping the OP.

OT: Mine was total crap when i got it (random reboots, constant browser ANRs, total slowness...), but the community here helped - i installed custom rom and 99% of problems are gone and tablet is now fast, stable and great

That’s cool. I'm waiting for my warranty to run out at the end of the month then it's root and unlock for me. I'm kind of scared to do it because mine has worked so well from day one though. I should be getting the dock for Christmas and I can't wait to play with that. The DEV community is great and that is why I like the Android platform so much because of cases like yours.
