[Q] Samsung Galaxy S II fail to boot! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I just bought a new SGS2 and it was working fine, until i turned it off...I tried switching it back on immediately and nothing worked, so i removed the battery for a few seconds and still nothing. I left it out for the night and the following morning i put it back in and it came back on
I switched it off recently to put my sim card in (it wasn't picking up the sim card) and now it wont start up again. So now I'm going to leave it for the night.
Is there any way to fix this problem? What if it doesn't start tomorrow? I suppose I can get it replaced...but i have very sensative data on it already (Such as my emails, contact info, credit card info, etc) So i don't particularly want to hand it in to a service center. I just want to get it running to remove all my data and THEN hand it in.
Any thoughts on how to get it working temporarily?

Perhaps the battery is dead, plug in the usb cable and see if it starts charging.

Dead battery charge overnight
Dirty Battery contacts clean .
Try a replacement battery .
See if it will boot connected via the Samsung cable to a PC .
Take it you have ignored rule one and backed up all your data ??
In which case you need to ask the service centre are they able to back up the data .
jje

Well i know the battery is not dead or dirty because the phone has power (It's fully charged since the last time I charged it which is just before i turned it off and it wouldn't turn back on again).
The phone acts like it's completely hard bricked....yet i haven't done ANYTHING to it, all i've done is start it up and install a few Market Apps and that's all
I've plugged it into my Computer, and my PC makes a noise when it's plugged in and when i hold the power button it makes a noise...
It refuses to boot in Recovery mode or Download mode...
Thanks for the replies, still stuck tonight!

Galaxy S2 don't turn off but reboot!help!

hello...i hope that someone can help me....when i try to turn off the device,it shut down and after few seconds reboot?why?
also simetime the phone don't turn on and on screen i see a green battery with a thermo....someon can help me?
Did you find the answer to this? i am sending my SGS2 back for replacement. i have the same errors plus the following.
Phone selects speaker rather than earpiece as default for incoming/outgoing calls
Phone on ocasions randomly starts Kies and Voice commands even if there is no physical contact with the phone
sometimes the phone defaults back to a launcher i have never seen before (it is not touchwiz) and i have no idea how to launch it without it doing it automatically.
The faults you mentioned can be bypassed with a battery pull but they are annoying, I didn't have these problems until i upgraded my firmware through Kies to KE7.
I have an O2 branded device.

same issues to me... I'm trying to fix it flashing a stock rom without good results yet In the meantime I'm waiting for a USB jig from ebay before to send it to technical service
I have a I9100M(BELL) flashed with cognition 1.32 with same problem.
Randomly my phone will:
-go into driving mode
-answer calls in speaker phone mode
-start alarm clock
-think its charging when the cable is not plugged in
-Reboot it self/turn it self on when its off
-wont connect to computer or charge even when cable is plugged in.
I need to send it in for repairs what should i flash? there is no bell branded firmwares or roms.

Exactly the same to me
How do you flash congnition? just over the stock rom with odin?
did you flash modem?
Absolutely same here, since coming from CM7 to VillainRom.
Never had that before.
I´m waiting and watching it and your results!
Thanks for this thread.
That's why I don't root the phone..it works fine.

This has nothing to do with root access.
I cannot believe that any problem related just because you have access to your system.
Back to topic, flashed back to cm but problem persists.
It's getting really bad near to flashing stock and bring it back to change device if someone knows what it is could be helpful.
I also have this problem. I think it has something to do with the usb port.
Because sometimes it just scans for media, or it thinks it is charging. Really weird! Then i just put in the charger and it stops for a while. Turning off will just reboot the device. And removing battery and plugging it back it also just reboots the phone.
I hope it is not hardware related...
I was looking for help for a problem I have but this seems to cover most of the problems I'm having.
Mine has recently started going into a strange mode after shutting it down. I get the battery charging symbol alternating with the "battery overheating" symbol.
The only way to stop it is to remove the battery for at least a couple of hours (if you put it straight back in it automaticly starts up and goes back to flashing the battery warnings) or pressing Power, Vol+ and Home and choosing Reboot.
I have also noticed its very slow to respond to plugging the charger in or out. It doesn't always wake-up and bleep when the charger is put in and it stays showing its charging for some time after the charger has been removed.
I was told that the charger should be removed as soon as charging is compleated but surely overnight is the only time we have available to charge these phones!
Depending on the custom rom or kernel you are using, it might not support off mode charging.
To avoid having a "problem" with charging the phone in off mode, some developers decided to make the phone boot up when the phone is been charged when the phone is off.
Going back to an official stock ROM fixes this problem.

As for Cyanogen, since built 23, you can charge the phone when it is in the "off" state. Please wipe out your userdata partition before flashing. Do not restore from a previous backup.
I fixed my reboot problem (rebooting instead of turning off) by letting the battery drain all the way so it couldn't boot anymore. Tried turning it on to see if it really doesn't go on anymore. After that I plugged in the charger and I got the charging-symbol and it did not turn on so I kept it charging overnight while turned off and in the morning it was finished and turned it on.
I also cleaned the usb-port on the phone with a toothpick. It had alot of dust stuck in it which I couldn't see. After that no more problems...for now. They haven't returned for 2 days now.

What kernel and rom are you using? I have not seen the battery overheating symbol on the sgs2.
No, there is no need to remove the phone from charger, when the phone gets to what is considered full, the battery will stop charging by itself.
Are you using the original samsung charger that came with the phone, or are you using a after market charger? Most of these USB chargers do not send a signal on the data lines. When using these chargers, the phone becomes laggy and unresponsive, there is also a delay to register anything on the touch screen. Stay away from these chargers.
For lithium batteries just charge it whenever you feel like it. Lithium batteries have a few thousand deep charge cycles, meaning if you use up all the power, then charge it,you use 1 deep charge cycle. However, if you use the micro cycles for charging, you can charge the batteries a few million times. Leaving the battery on empty for too long will damage the lithium battery.
Can any one confirm if this is a hardware or software issue as i now have the problem when i try and switch the phone off it will just reboot?
The Same issue occurs in my sgs2
hi everybody,
i just got my sgs2 ten days ago
everything seems good at first
then i realized screen standby lock lag problem, there exist a lag between 1 second to 2.5 seconds.
i ignore that due to it cannot be named as a problem, it seems like a bad characteristic
then yesterday , i have faced with another problem
after i have docked the phone to the original vehicle dock kit,
phone cannot be closed via power button , i hold it 1.5 seconds then chose turn off among list, phone looks like to be turned off then after a little while it just vibrates and reboots. That is phone cannot be turned off, it s somehow turn itself on again.
Whats the reason of this problem ?
In another forum one faced with the same problem said that it turned out to be normal when the battery is erased but the problem is occured again after docking.
micro usb connector
I droped my phone in the water, got it alive again, but with all the error(overheat battery symbol, no stable usb connection, reboot when i power off, 100% charged not going away) replaced the micro usb connector with a new one.
Some problems are gone but i still can't connect to pc (kies, debug etc), poweroff problem still happen sometime.
Conclusion: It is not only the usb part of the phone that are causing this problem.
But I do belive its a hardware problem.
Have you phone maybe got to much to drink too..
usb port???
I've recently been experiencing the same problem
When I turned off my phone it switched on again!
And removing battery and plugging it back it also just reboots the phone.
Sometimes the USB connector and charger are confused
Do solved the problem by changing the USB port?
plz help me
Thank you in advance for helping me
This is definately a hardware issue. Clean the usb connector, failing that it will need replacing

[Q] Help! Strange charging behaviour.

Has anyone had this problem?
After three trouble free months, my phone has developed a a very strange problem.
After charging, it behaves as if I'm constantly connecting and disconnecting the phone to a PC. It bleeps whilst showing the battery being connected to a charger and then imidiatly acts like its been disconnected by bleeping and running media scanner on both SD cards. It also shows that its connected via Kies, even though all this is happening whilst only being connected to a charger!
I've already done a full reset, which helped for a few days before it came back. It normally sorts itself out after a few minutes but the period before it "calms down" is getting longer. This morning I removed the battery for an hour but it continued in its "loop". Another, possibly related symptom is that as soon as the battery is installed, the phone boots up without being switched on. The same thing happens if I shut the phone down, it just powers up again!
Any thoughts?
had you if ever dip the bottom part of your phone? sounds like short-circuit issue or I maybe wrong.. try bringing in on to the nearest service center for warranty
Sounds a plausible theory but as far as I can tell, it hasn't got wet. Its been doing it for a few day now, so I think if it was damp, it would have dried out by now.
Thanks anyway.
I got the same problem. Let me know if you figure it out.

my friend had a simmilar issue and it was damage to the usb port , it kept thinking it was connecting to the pc or charger , it also wouldnt charge when plugged into a wall point and went into usb mode and vice versa when he put it into a pc
he sent it back for repair and they sent him a new phone
it may not be what you have but it does sound simmilar
i would try a few things like a reset , format the mass memory , install firmware again , dont restore back ups but set phone up fresh like you would do if you just bought it , then see how it goes , it could just be a corrupted file or system error that could be fixed bya full wipe and fresh install or it could be like my friends and the usb could be on the way out
on the topic of usb ports i do think they could have been better designed and iam hoping mine doesnt break as its needed for hdmi out , charging , docks , etc etc
Thanks Buxz,
As a follow up, I put the battery back in after taking it our for about 3hrs and all seams fine. I know that it isn't a permanent fix but I think it points more to software than hardware, which in a way is more annoying as its all about trial and error, as you described. A mechanical fault is more straight forward.
I just dread having to charge it again!
Regards, Woolly.
UPDATE
Charged it overnight and no problems when disconnecting it this morning. So far!
If anything, the battery life it better than before the problems. The fact that removing the battery for 3hrs broke the cycle of connect/disconnect, makes me think its soft/firmware related.
Woolly.

Sudden crash and won't turn on

I've had this phone for 2 months.
I started up dead space, had wifi on and it was downloading the game data.
left the room to clean the kitchen (maybe 20 mins) when I came back the phone wouldn't unlock
pulled the battery and turned it on, phone booted but wouldn't get past the initial samsung logo.
after that it wouldn't turn on at all
I pulled the battery, left it for a few mins, put it back in, tried booting up, tried getting to recovery, download mode, tried removing sim and sd card
is this an issue other people have had? am i screwed? i left it plugged in w/ the battery in on the off chance it didnt have enough charge or something. but the battery logo isn't coming up
Try charging phone for an hour or so.
Question: when you connect your phone to the pc, any reaction on the pc side? Is Odin recognizing the phone?
If you can't get into download mode by holding down home+volume down+ power at the same time, you can buy a usb jig (or make it your self it's not that hard)
Just google for usb jig.
Other than that. I have no idea.
Good luck to you dude.
Sent from SGS II Running CriskeloRom V34.
no reaction anywhere. the battery animation isn't displayed when plugging in either.
can't get into download mode to use odin. i ordered a usb jig (figured it would be good to have it anyways)
the phone is currently plugged in, the battery feels slightly warm but it still wont turn on. i'm hoping it is a faulty battery.
my plan is to go to a phone shop tomorrow and ask to borrow a battery just to see if it will turn on, if not ill try a repair shop. if not that, then i'll start complaining about my warranty to the international seller i got it from on amazon.
Sorry to hear that.
Good luck.
hi if u have a tester test the voltage on the battery -/+ for dc voltage if it's zero u need to shock the battery.
i brought it in to bell and asked to use a spare battery. the girl took it right out of her phone and put it in mine, tried to turn it on, nothing. no download, no recovery, no reaction whatsoever except for a slight warming around where the camera lens is if you hold the power button for a long time.
looks like it's fried. i really hope I can get a return with the amazon seller. i've only had it 2 1/2 months

Did I just brick my GS2?

Hi guys,
Very confused here!
I was running the latest AOKP Hydrogen rom and one of the latest Siyah kernels...
I recently moved onto the S3, so I was basically prepping my S2 to be sold. What happened was as follows:
I had my S2 connected to my PC to get some data off of it;
I went into the factory reset menu and it froze so I unplugged the USB cable (I assume it was waiting for the SD card to become available.
It displays the "settings is not responding. Would you like to close?" message, but I clicked wait and it seemed to work fine as I'd disconnected the USB cable;
At this point the battery was at about 19%;
I clicked factory reset with wipe SD card;
After a few minutes I check the phone and it's completely blank. I figure it's doing something and can't turn the screen on so I leave it for a few more minutes;
Eventually I grow concerned and assume the phone has crashed, so I hold down the power button to do a hard reset.
After this the phone does not turn on.
It does the following:
If I try to turn it on it displays the SGS2 logo (with the yellow triangle) for a few seconds and then turns off.
If I connect it to the power it displays the loading screen of the battery charge app for a few seconds and then turns off.
Sometimes if I mash the buttons it will flash on and off with a pure white screen until I hold the power button and turn it off.
Any ideas, guys?
My only idea is that something crazy has happened with the battery as I did swap my extended battery with my girlfriend's normal battery last night. As I work in a phone shop, I'll charge up the battery in another phone to make sure it has power.
But I know the battery has power, and the phone it doing exactly the same thing with my old 1650mah battery (which may or may not have power in it).
Any ideas? I was going to be selling it for around £200, so it was gonna really take the load of my shiny, new S3! 0_o

That's just what I was thinking, actually
I couldn't find a description of what actually happens when this brick happens. The page doesn't really say... Does anywhere say?
Edit: I swear I didn't even flash the Siyah RC6 that was known to brick the phones either... -_-;;
Thanks!
It's not just a specific kernel, more are actually faulty. The whole story is here.

your phone is ok as far as it shows u the s2 logo
you have 2 things to do , try to go to recovery or download mode and formate data/factory reset then flash another rom , btw what kernel u used before your phone go to this situation ? if you were using stable kernel "cm,neak, fluxi, syah stable" so you are safe from hardbrick bug , and the hard brick bug is done only if you have faulty kernel and wibed your data through recovery , and this isn't your situation , so don't be afraid

Thanks for saying, but I can't get into recovery or download. The phone switches off before then!
That's what's so confusing! xD
Thanks
With a known good batter try hard resetting to download mode 2x in a row.. Hold the button config to get into download mode.. Hold it through two restarts.. Might work.

I've nuked mine a few times with buggy kernels, sounds like a similar situation. I got my device back by flashing CM9 resurrection, then flashing Siyah, and finally from CWM flashing an ICS-based stock ROM.
I'd suggest taking a backup of your efs unless you're selling it with stock.

i am having exactly the same problem.i did a factory reset after flashing siyah kernel (SiyahKernel v3.3.1) on Resurrection remix v2.2.let me know if you guys find any solutions
JIG
try to use a download mode JIG.
I'm not sure if a link will violate xda-rules....
google it
dont worry
if you boot up and are getting the sg2 logo then you have not bricked you phone.
to fix simply download a .tar version of any rom and run odin to pda reinstall if you wanted to you could go the whole hog and reflash a fresh cf-kernal (rooted or stock) and then flash fresh firmware. just remember to get the kernal that originally matches the (ithink) your correct baseband ie xxki4
there should be no worries aslong as you dont pull the plug.
could have had a worse error saying installation incomplete please use kies then you would have to had taken battry out reinserted and hoped the three butn combo for rec. mode worked happened to me awhile back lol
hope i helped you
ps never read your post fully just skimmd the jist of it although the above should be applicable
also try resetting your battry stats in cwm
finally fixed
thanks for the help everyone.i have fixed it now.it seems like the problem was with the updated version of siyah kernel .i managed to put the phone in download mode.(kept the phone on the charger for a while. than, i don't know some how when i tried to go to download mode it did).and flashed siyah kanel v3.2.6.4 via odin

[Q] "Soft-Brick" when battery removed?

Hi, I have been asked to repair a SGS2 for a friend. The problems he described with it are that it would not turn on, enter recovery or download mode...but would display a battery logo with a circle in it for approx 5seconds with USB power attached. He says this all happened after re-flashing using Kies - he is not very phone / IT literate.
Repair Process:
1) After some research, testing and messing about I made a USB jig for it and it booted into download mode, though only with USB power attached. Connected to ODIN and re-flashed the phone with the stock ICS UK rom (IML74K.XWLP7)...Success the phone accepted the flash no problems, but still had the same non-booting / flashing battery logo only with power error, though it would now go into download mode without the jig.
2) Did more research on here...Thanks to all the useful posts!!! And discovered that the error could be caused by the battery being totally dead, and the phone unable to boot-up enough with USB to be able to charge it - great idea Samsung, to charge the battery you must first power up off the dead battery. Not having or being able to access / borrow a SGS2 myself I decided to try to manually charge the battery by making a charging dock for it. Before charge battery had 3.53v and after 30min on-charge had 3.68v, put freshly charged battery into phone...same problem totally dead unless plugged in then flashing battery logo with USB power.
3) Lots of swearing and cursing at phone, then had a few bottles of Pear Cidre. Decided would be good idea to attack phone again! Took fully charged battery from a HTC Wildfire and for want of better description jump started the SGS2. SGS2 in one hand, Wildfire battery in other and soldering iron in mouth i think, a battery booster was born. Connected booster to SGS2 and without USB power connected turned on phone...Success it lived, finished flashing its self and booted up. Removed booster and phone reported the battery had 98% charge.
4) Passed out in bed... awoke this morning to find phone still on and working well, battery had dropped to 82% in 10h. Decided to bite bullet and turned phone off to see if it will turn back on again and...It did. Repeated process six or seven times through morning as well as using for You Tube and Interned to run battery down, still only got it down to 41%. Though would try my SIM card in to test that all works well and after turning phone off, pulling back off and putting SIM card in without removing battery it all worked great...But then turned phone off, removed SIM and accidentally knocked battery out -D'oh, did not think anything of it until i tried to power back on...dead without power and flashing battery logo with USB power, used battery booster again and phone powered on no problems at all and reports battery power without booster of 29%
Does anybody have any idea whats going on? / Why if the battery is removed from the phone it will not power on at all, even with a charged battery?????
Thank you in advance for your input!
