I bought a Microsoft Bluetooth Keyboard 6000 today from bestbuy to use with both my tablet and my computer. It works great with my tablet (am using it now) However I would like to remap some keys so it would add some extra functionally to it. Anyone have any idea how to do this, or come across something I have failed to see?

Keys are mapped in files in /system/usr/keylayout
it's not so straightforward and depends on what vendor ID the device presents. If it matches an installed key map, ok, but if not then it may get either the generic map or the qwerty map. The Flyer already has maps for logitech , Sony, Apple and Motorola bluetooth keyboards, but not MS. you might start by searching for a MS keymap file.
WARNING< backup your files / ROM before you modify any key map files in your system.
Good luck

Hey guys, anybody using a bluetooth keyboard with their StarTrk? Any recommendations?
I'm going away for a few days next week and would rather keep track of my emails using emoze and a BT keyboard than bring my chunky laptop. I'm still getting used to T9 (ie. I'm slow!) so using the keypad isn't really an option.
Cheers
I have this: http://www.freedominput.com/site/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=15&Itemid=32
I dont use it much but I have good experiences. Everything works, even the softkeys (Left key = Ctrl + Tab, Right key = Ctrl + X, I note it because in manual for Windows Mobile are mentioned different keys). Driver works, input in all applications. I have no problem with any program (use mostly mail, IM, web...).
The only thing what is pissing me off is that you have to generate unlock code for driver on your phone (is on their web), after this you cannot use generate and use this keyboard on any other device (which use drivers (can be used HID, bud some functions are left)). You can get one more code via their support, but other codes are required to buy... They want about £17. Thats really sad.
(Sorry for my English)
Thanks moneytoo, I'll keep hunting around eBay.
Just one thing I forgot to say... Because of the clamshell design of the phone, you cant put Qtek on the built-in holder (as you can see Blackberry on the previous link) because Qtek is too tall and heavy so you have to have them somewhere next to the keyboard.
I feel inconvenience using flyer basic memo app.
Because virtual keyboard pops up suddenly, and note is automatically saved with pause.
Do you think that app is useful?
If you guys are using other note app, please inform me what app it is.

Well when I still was running the HTC Flyer on Gingerbread, I used notes and someone had a good tip: Press your left hand thumb on the left side of the page (the very left where you can't write on anyway). Just hold the thumb down while you are writing and the keyboard wont come up and also the softbuttons wont trigger eventually.
This actually made the notes app quiet useful.
However - since I mostly annotate pdfs I moved to Honeycomb and use ezpdf in combination with tapeatalk (tapeatalk is the best solution for audio recording anyway since the file is automatically named as a date and even with 3gp the voice recording quality is good - it also never crashes while notes has its problems with multitasking, audio recording, saving and notetaking at the same time).
My suggestion: Move on to Honeycomb - you will find more sophisticated solutions (others also mentioned handwriting recognition with writepad).
Have fun!
i moved on to hc
i'm satisfied with hc! lol
thanks for your advice

Cool, although... I wish it could be disabled instead.
I found it useful to use a Null Keyboard. I think there are only a few on the market, one of which is free. You would just enable the null keyboard in settings, long press in HTC Notes and choose the Input Method as the null keyboard. No keyboard would popup if you activate a text cursor. That solution worked better in Gingerbread from what I remember. In Honeycomb, the null keyboard also disabled the pens button, whereas I think you could still access the pens in Gingerbread.
Mind me asking, but are there any folks out that would say that the keyboard popup annoyance is way bigger on Honeycomb compared to Gingerbread? I had a really long meeting on Friday where I constantly fought with the keyboard, and it went a bit better on Gingerbread as far as I remember.
As for the null keyboard. Let's assume it's working the way as intended - wouldn't that mean I'd always had to switch to a full keyboard once I want to use one in a different app (e.g. 'the browser')?
I really use the USP of the Flyer (i.e. the notes option) heavily in my job, so I am keen on getting the keyboard thing solved for once .
I don't think the popup problem is any bigger in Honeycomb, in my experience. I just use the same put-your-finger-on-the-spiral trick that Himmig mentioned earlier, which works maybe 80% of the time.
Yes, you do have to switch back from the null keyboard. It's one-too-many long-presses away for me to be able to call it convenient, but it works OK (again, only in gingerbread). If the null keyboard didn't turn off the pens in honeycomb, it would have been perfect because there is a keyboard-selection panel next to the notification area where you can quickly switch between keyboards. Perhaps this is not the case for all null keyboards?

This finger trick works like a charm!!
Also, I use the stock note app and even though it is not perfect, it gets the job done very well! I have not used a single sheet of paper since the beginning of this semester.
Even though, the flyer went on sale for 300 last week and I lost 200 bucks, it has been the best money I've spent! I absolutely love this tablet!
Regards.
Hello,
Let me comment also about this subject...
Flyer's most outstanding feature is that pen and it's really hard to understand why HTC was ok with that simple built in Notes (even it's Evernote for HTC) and didn't bring a really powerful note take application to make a full use of the pen.
I don't want to fire any polemics but if this innovation would have been introduced by Apple, you couldn't have imagine how they would promote it with a bundled strong application with it (even paid one). Anyway, this is some other topic...
Now, I also use Notes synched with Evernote but there are some issues. I have a number of notebooks but they aren't fully synched with Evernote. In one sync session say only 3 notebooks, in other 4 but never the all. Second, the well-mentioned keyboard issue. Since I'm left handed the trick didn't work me so well.
Now I'm in HC and using an app called "Antipaper Notes". I liked it very much but the trial version is too limited. I would like to buy the pro version (or "activation" with their wording) but they say it's deactivated say when you flash a custom rom or delete app. So I didn't go for it. But as I told the app is quite well.
I also heard about Quill but didn't have any chance to try it out. I've tried Skitch, a product of Evernote, which is also better for hand notetaking. If you don't have to take a photo or record a sound, these seem to very well.
I expect HTC to make powerful applications for the pen at least for note, sketch and paint. Ok, they've released Pen SDK but still we don't have good bundled SWs.
To sum up,
1. Antipaper Notes (tried, very well but restricted)
2. Skitch (over the average, good note take)
3. Native Notes (don't like that but using)
If you have tried different programs, could you please add up and comment so that we can try?
Thanks.
I can suggest all of you to use tasker to automatically switch between null keyboard in notes and stock/other keyboard in other applications. I have successfully make tasker profile for this task. But you must install secure setting plugin to give tasker access to Android secure setting!
If you use null keyboard in native Notes, there will be no lag even though we used it for speed writing. Just like wacom tablet PC!

That sounds interesting, maybe good to give a try. Btw, are u using GB or HC? I am using HC and wonder if these are compatible with HC. Guess found out when I go home...
Edit: iwansuryo, could you please detail how to create a profile in tasker? I couldn't figure out how to make switch in between apps?
You need the secure setting plug in and null keyboard. Set a task that when notes opens the input method is null keyboard. Make the exit task that the input method is whatever keyboard you use

here is the trick I use to avoid the keyboard popping up. always ensure the pen is pressured and pressed on the screen before placing the rest of the hand on the screen. once you do that, you can freely move your hand and even lift both your hand and pen off the screen and go back on the screen palm first ( if you do it quickly ) as you would normally when writing. it takes some practice, but it will become second nature in no time. I find it work better than the thumb trick.
The BIGGEST downfall is that handwritting to text is so bad :\
The Lenovo tablet works ok, but it isn't too good of a general note taking app.
I wish the HTC note app supported conversion, would improve it 10X, especially since the majority of note taking I take gets converted into One note text doc.
Anyone know of a good ssh/telnet app that works properly with the keyboard dock on the Prime?
I have tried ConnectBot but the shift-number keys don't work, as well as other keys on the keyboard.
Telnet isn't as important as ssh, so an ssh only app would be good.
Willing to pay a few quid/dollars/euros/camels too.

I'm using a custom apk for connectbot that can be found here : http://code.google.com/p/connectbot/wiki/KeyboardShortcuts
Look at the comments, there's two links from two different guys and it works perfectly with the dock!

Better Terminal Emulator Pro is worth a look, although I am also going to check out the connectbot mentioned above.
BTEP does not support encrypted keys which is a big problem for me
-Barry
That custom apk is great thanks Anthony.
Do you know if you can disable the function key thing so I can enter a "!" ?
Indeed, thank you for the keyboard-capable APK.
My only gripe is that connectbot won't SSH1, which is necessary for my situation.
I agree, btep is the next best solution after connectbot.

Thanks for this, even better than the BTEP I have been using, and free to boot!
I still can't get the "!" key working, which I need for vi!
Any ideas?
That's weird, I have no issue using the ! symbol
Maybe try to go to settings, Directory shortcutcs => Use right side keys, that's the only thing I can think of
I use BTEP for the dock support, although I guess Terminal Emulator can do that well enough now. BTEP like many apps, uses Dropbear for SSH: which is good but kinda limited.
I generally use OpenSSH in a Debian chroot, running in BTEP+tmux; tmux is a program like gnu screen.

Resurrecting a dead thread....
Sorry for ressurecting, but after going through the ringer on exactly this, had to comment.
Home/end keys don't work in nano/vi for BTEP. Commented this in the existing BTEP bug for TPrime keyboards: http://littlegreenbugs.com/bugs/view/165/
BTEP also doesn't properly do screen wipes in curses applications. Again, see here: http://littlegreenbugs.com/bugs/view/191/
Connectbot standard has effectively no support for the hardware keyboard.
vxconnectbot works awesome, as long as all your modifier keys (shift, ctrl, etc.) aren't pressed at the same time as the keys. Press, release, then press+release the key to modify. Not at all like a real keyboard.
irssi connectbot actually supports the keyboard, which is incredible. There's some other (rendering) issues with irssi connectbot, but compared to the others it's even better support than BTEP. Note, this doesn't actually run irssi, it adds support for actually using things like your modifier keys from a hardware keyboard, so that you could use irssi if you want to. Thus the name.
ConnectBot
I am still a fan of using the modified ConnectBot, it is just sadly really quite ridiculous to find... Best working version I have found is from http://code.google.com/p/connectbot/issues/detail?id=459#c72. In comment #72 4WayneD links to a ConnectBot-debug.apk on his website. I have been using this modified version on the Prime for a couple months now. Things I have checked myself:
* Number keys work correctly
* Ctrl keys work (this was key for me as I use screen a *LOT*)
* Search key functions as Alt
* Home/End/PgUp/PgDn keys work
Another thing to note, this is a modified older version as I do not like the new "tablet" version of ConnectBot as it sacrifices way too much screen real estate.
I like Terminal IDE, works fine with the dock.

Hi,
Is it just me or does ICS spell checker not work with any word processor, with or without the keyboard?
Has anyone got an alternative?
From my experience it has worked with some apps and of course the web browser.
But as far as word processing goes, I just attempt a test in the bundled Polaris Office on the Transformer Prime and there is no spell check option, nor an auto detect spell check.
Tried pretty much every office app on the android market, still no support for ICS spell check!
I'm surprised other people aren't fussed about spell check, and that no one has found a way to use spell check.
I was reading about the no spell check in office apps and people where saying that because the keyboards auto-correct for you it would be redundant to have the office app to spell check for you. The only problem with this is hardware keyboards, like ours, don't have auto-correct built in so we notice the lack of spell check more than other people. This argument is still kinda strange to me since spell check is not the same as auto-correct in my opinion.
Have you guys tried OnLive Desktop? It's what I'm using now and full-Word works amazingly well. With a mouse and keyboard you'd literally think you were in native Word on a PC. It also autosaves which has bitten me in the ass more times than I can count in Android office products. Any files you create on the device are saved in their cloud and accessible via a browser on any other device. It's pretty cool.

Well I'm in the UK, so that wouldn't work anyway.
I use Splashtop if I have internet access and can use Word, Visual Studio etc on the move, but for the times when I don't have internet it would be super handy for me to be able to write documents with spell check!
I'm in the UK too and no problems accessing On live. There is a thread in the apps section with a link to the apk, and just sign up on their website. Its a great service.
But I do also understand the need for offline spell check it would be useful in Polaris

Hmm, just tried On Live desktop, hardware keyboard doesn't seem to work, Splashtops remote mouse cursor follows the primes (meaning you are able to hover over items, which comes in handy) and supports right click.
Recently I have gotten a USB keyboard for my tablet, but I'm having some problems trying to remap some of the "useless" keys (F1, F2,...) to something usefull like home and multitasking.
I have read on this a bit, but haven't managed to find anything.
I have done the terminal command to get my keyboard's vendor and product IDs, but in the /system/usr/keylayout there is no such file, but the keyboard (acording to an app called "Key test") uses different keycodes in comparison to the ones found in generic.kl and qwerty.kl.
I even tried editing both of those, but still nothing.
Any help?
Bump!
